PUBLISHER'SLETTER

I

never thought I would be writing a publisher’s letter quite like this one. In the span of a little over a month, our lives have been turned upside down. Even this issue is “upside down” in that we are publishing it digitally only in May and going to print for June. I certainly never thought that would happen either! But as many of you know, I am always looking for the positive and I believe we have been given an incredible opportunity with COVID-19. For us here at Natural Nutmeg, it’s allowed us to expand our digital reach in an amazing way! I started hosting daily live Zoom Lunch & Learn interviews with our expert writers and advertisers discussing strategies on coping with COVID-19 from a health/relationship/financial perspective to uplifting topics related to how to lead a healthy and conscious lifestyle. We launched a Virtual Holistic Networking group for holistic practitioners and business owners in Connecticut to meet monthly and discuss best practices and how to support eachother. We’ve been supporting as many businesses as we can by helping get the word out about their virtual services and online classes. While it doesn’t replace the connection we feel at a live event or face to face meeting, at least we can still “see” eachother during this difficult time. Change for many brings elements of fear. Sometimes it may feel as if things are being ripped away from us even if it’s something we’ve asked for or have outgrown. As creatures of habit, we feel more comfortable when things stay the same and when we know what to expect. But that doesn’t allow for growth. In order for us to evolve, we must accept that change is necessary and we must look at it as a beneficial thing. We must learn to allow people and things to flow in and out of our lives without trying to hold on too tight. I believe if we can do this, we will all come out of this better than before. Also, don’t forget we’re launching the First Edition of The CT Healthy Aging Resource to be distributed in Summer, 2020. This will be an annual edition of Connecticut’s vetted resources of practitioners and businesses that provide services to people 50+ and their caregivers, and will be a resource that people will save and pass on to others. Dr. Jamie Ahn, ND

r. Jamie Ahn graduated from the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine (magna cum laude). Prior to pursuing her Naturopathic medical degree, she graduated from Ramapo College in New Jersey with a B.S. in Biology. DH: Why did you want to become a Naturopathic Physician? JA: My passion for medicine began because of my daughter who has a rare disease. After taking her to see countless doctors, who never seemed to go beneath the surface of her condition, I naturally became frustrated. Then one day, I took my daughter to an eye doctor who impressed me so much I asked him to treat my motion sickness and somnolence while reading. After treating me for six months and having me bombard him with question after question, the doctor said to me, “You know, you would make a great therapist.” To underline his point, he gave me a signed copy of a book he’d written, and offered me a job. I seized the opportunity and entered a pre-med program for Optometry, later transitioning into Naturopathy. DH: What sets you apart from other practitioners in the naturopathic field? JA: My approach involves a lot of scientific testing, probably far more than any other naturopath or primary care physician I know. I cast my net wider and dig a lot deeper to make sure I get to the root cause of my patient’s health problems. I examine the whole body, diet and lifestyle to find treatments that work. DH: What types of services do you offer? JA: The solutions and services I offer my patients include nutritional advice, functional medicine and acupuncture. I do comprehensive stool, organic acid, heavy metal, mycotoxin and environmental toxicity testing. I do far-reaching nutrition and comprehensive hormone evaluations, cortisol included. I also do Methylation (genetic) testing, as well as food sensitivity, neurotransmitter, and energy metabolism testing.

8

Natural Nutmeg - June 2020

DH: What can patients expect from working with you? JA: Patients who come to see me can expect to undergo a fair amount of individualized specialty testing in the beginning. I always explain to patients that treatments based on scientific data will not only help them get better faster, they also save time and money in the long run. New patients are asked to complete a HIPAA compliant questionnaire on my fully secure patient portal. I encourage them to share any other tests and health information they may have. I go over everything they submit, at no charge, prior to their first visit where we together establish which test package they should do. DH: What plans do you have for the future for your practice? JA: My hope for the future of my practice is that I will simply continue to treat patients in the best way possible. I value quality over quantity and love studying so I’m continually striving to improve my personalized, deep-dive approach to healing. DH: Tell us about the best memory you have about being a holistic practitioner. JA: The best memory I have involves my first ever patient. He came to me for help with pain management and associated blood pressure problems while I was still an intern. We were able to reduce his pain levels from 8 to 2 within two weeks just by changing his diet. He came back to see me after I graduated so that we could work on the root cause of his problem and I am still treating him today. Dr. Jamie Ahn is a Licensed Naturopathic Physician based in Norwalk, Connecticut. For more information or to make an appointment call 203.450.6463 or visit DrJamieAhn.com. See ad on page 7.

Restaurants Keeping It Real: Soma Grille By Kathy Beach, MS, NBC-HWC

D

o you like to eat out? I do! Of course, cooking at home is more cost effective and can be the healthier choice, but eating out is fun, relaxing and can be a delicious culinary treat. I have to admit that I am pretty picky about the restaurants that I choose, because I will only go if I can eat real food made with the best ingredients. I thought that I would share how I figure that out and create a list of Connecticut restaurants that are getting it right. In the coming months, I will spotlight a different restaurant in each issue. How do I vet each restaurant? I eat there, ask questions, talk to the staff, chef and owners if possible and look at their website. The Questions to Ask 1. Farm to Table. Do they source their food primarily from local farms? Is this listed on the menu or a board? 2. Oils. Do they use canola, corn, sunflower, safflower, soybean, peanut or a blended oil? Will they simply use extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil if you ask? 3. Animal Protein. Do they have menu options for 100% grass-fed meat, organic or pastured chicken, wild or sustainable farm-raised fish that is carefully vetted? 4. Organic. Do they have organic options on the menu at all times (an organic salad)? Are they aware of the Dirty Dozen list from The Environmental Working Group and if so do they incorporate organic options of these foods into their menus? Are they familiar with the fact that nonGMO products can contain pesticides? 5. Ingredients. Do they use real ingredients and avoid high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and preservatives? 6. Allergy friendly. Are the most common allergens listed on the menu (gluten, dairy, soy)? Is the staff trained to understand allergy concerns? Are they aware of the allergens in different menu items? Do they have gluten free choices? Is the kitchen willing and able to make substitutions to accommodate a customer’s allergy or health concerns?

Natural Nutmeg - June 2020

Soma Grille, Simsbury, CT This month, I am featuring a newcomer to Simsbury. Soma Grille has been open for seven months and is located in the historic Simsbury 1820 House. I interviewed the general manager Chris Riley. He told me that the goal has been to create a restaurant that was smartly casual and welcoming with a friendly staff that provided fresh, delicious and locally sourced meals. So let’s get to “the questions”. In the CT growing season they source locally. They mostly use Gordon Food Service who tries to source within a one hundred mile radius. They list all of their very local suppliers on a blackboard in the bar area. The goat cheese is from Sweet Pea in North Granby, the gluten free rolls are from Pure Love Gluten Free Bakery in Avon and the infused, organic maple syrups are from Maple Craft Foods in Sandy Hook. Generally speaking, their field greens and arugula are organic and currently, the asparagus and broccoli are organic. If you prefer to eat organically, just ask your sever to check with the kitchen on what is organic that week. When it comes to oils, they always have extra virgin olive oil available and use it to make all of the salad dressings. They do use a 10% blended oil for everything else and canola oil in the fryer. If you are gluten sensitive, they have a dedicated GF fryer basket. Soma Grille definitely has some clean animal protein options. They use Black Pearl Salmon that is sourced from the Shetland Islands and northern Scotland. This is an excellent area for sustainable fish farming due to its highly oxygenated, deep waters with raging currents. They do not use antibiotics and are raised on a specifically formulated pure feed that is similar to their natural diet. The mussels are wild from PEI and the scallops are sustainably farmed. All of their beef is Certified Piedmontese. This unique breed of cattle was first noticed by farmers in Northwest Italy in the late 1800’s and is prized for being both lean and naturally tender because of a particular gene they carry. They are never administered growth hormones, antibiotics, or steroids and they spend most of their lives grazing on open range lands. Soma Grille obtains the grass-finished variety as well. They avoid artificial ingredients in the kitchen and they are allergy friendly. The menu denotes which items are gluten free and if you need more information regarding allergens, the staff is happy to find out for you. I have personally found the kitchen very willing to make substitutions as well. My current favorite menu item is the Short Ribs - they are absolutely delicious! I also have to say they have a lovely large bar area and it’s an excellent spot to eat on a crowded Friday night if you can’t get a table. https:// www.somagrille.com Submitted by Kathy Beach, MS, NBC-HWC, National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach. Emotionally & Mentally Supporting Older Adults During & After COVID-19 By Neil Anand uring this period of social and physical distancing, it can be challenging for people to stay connected to their friends and family. This is especially true for older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), those at high-risk for severe illness from the coronavirus (COVID-19) include:

D

• People aged 65 years and older • People who live in a nursing home or long-term care facility Moreover, among adults with confirmed COVID-19 reported in the U.S., 31-70% of adults 85+ and 31-59% of adults 65-84 years old require hospitalization, according to the CDC. So, even just a quick visit with your older loved one could open them to the possibility of contracting the coronavirus. But how can you keep your bond strong during this time? Here are a few ways to help your older loved one stay emotionally and mentally well: 1. Chat over the phone or through video: Set a specific time every day to check in with your loved one. You can simply call them or see each other by using apps such as Facetime or Facebook Messenger. Go through your old photos, select a few, and share memories and stories from that time.

2. Take breaks from the news: Encourage your older loved one to check the news once a day on TV or online to discourage overstimulation and anxiety. Reading, listening and watching a constant stream about the pandemic can be unsettling. 3. Watch Tune in Tuesdays: During this time, ComForCare is providing live concerts featuring classic hits from the 30s to 60s. If seniors or caregivers have a Facebook account, show them how to "tune in" every weekday at 1 p.m. EDT on the home office's Facebook page. It started out on Tuesdays, but we've moved it to every day. 4. Gain a new skill or hobby: Encourage your older loved one to learn something new. These can include watching Ted Talks, finding a new recipe online to try, or taking a paid class on websites like Udemy, Coursera or Lynda. Ask them to share what they learned during your scheduled calls. 5. Watch Netflix together: A free Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party allows you and your older loved one to watch shows and movies at the same time on the computer. It also allows anyone in your group to pause, play, fast forward and rewind the movies, so you're always at the same place with your loved one. There's

also a side chat bar where you both can discuss what's going on in the movie or show. Learn how to add the extension on your computer. During this time of uncertainty, it's extremely important that we band together and lean on each other, even if the way we support each other is a little different than before. ComForCare Home Care is a premier provider of inhome care with nearly 200 independently owned and operated locations in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., helping older adults live independently in their own homes and continue to do all the things they love. The home care company is committed to helping people live their best life possible and also offers special programs for people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. 1700 Post Road, Suite E5 in Fairfield. 203.612.8966 ComForCare.com/FairfieldCT fairfieldct@comforcare.com See ad on page 46.

Respiratory Infections Can Be Treated Naturally By Steven Frank

A

ccording to the NIH, lower respiratory infections are a greater burden of disease worldwide than HIV, malaria, cancer and heart attacks. People who suffer from COPD, cystic fibrosis or asthma are especially prone. Treatment can be especially difficult when we don’t even know whether it is a virus, bacterium or fungus that we are battling. To make matters worse, the standard of care in allopathic (western) medicine has us taking pills. This systemic approach has the harmful drugs passing through the entire body and all of the organs while treating an invader that is primarily on the air-side of the lungs. This treatment is neither appropriate, efficient nor effective in most cases. Typically we see prescriptions for a broad-spectrum antibiotic first. If that doesn’t work, an antiinflammatory is often tried next or finally an anti-fungal. This progression of potent drugs is very hard on the body and the immune system. Still, some infections do not respond. Where to treat: When you are treating an infection on the air-side of your lungs, you should apply the active agent to the air-side. Lay it down

right on top of the invading pathogens. Replenish it often to keep the area moist with the antimicrobial. This much more effective delivery can be accomplished by breathing the fine droplet mist of a nebulizer. One can achieve far greater local dosing with much less of a systemic dose. The difference can be as great as 1000:1 in dosing and coverage. Put the medication where it’s needed and only where it’s needed. You need less and it works better. What to treat with: The next important step is to choose an antimicrobial that kills all three pathogens. In this manner, your doctor doesn’t have to guess the proper drug or try them all sequentially. In fact, you don’t even need to use a drug. Clinical studies have shown that administration of an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver in this manner will clear even the most difficult pathogens. Perhaps the best attribute to this therapy is the complete lack of adverse side-effects. A simple treatment which doesn’t harm or weaken the body and can be easily administered without side effects.

Dosing: When using an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver of 45 ppm concentration or better, the dosing protocol is usually 3 milliliters, 3 times per day. For acute infections, the 3 milliliter dose can be administered every two waking hours. One must use a nebulizer so that the liquid comes off in micro-droplets. A vaporizer will not work as it will produce steam from the water and in the case of a silver colloid, leave the active ingredients behind. The nebulized mist is inhaled deep into the lungs where it will coat the invading pathogens. Duration: Most acute respiratory infections will clear in a day or two with this method. Chronic infections however, often present with significant tissue necrosis. This presents a bit more of a challenge as the pathogens can hide in the damaged tissue only to reappear when the treatment has ceased. For this reason, it is best to continue the treatment for a period of time after the symptoms have cleared. For acute conditions, a day will do. For chronic conditions, it is dependent on the condition of the patient. A clear sputum test is a good indication that the condition has been driven into remission. Steven Frank has been researching respiratory infection therapy for 15 years, holds three patents in this area and has conducted research at the Institute for Tuberculosis Research, National Jewish Hospital and Klearsen Corporation. hat makes the difference between surviving and thriving during this time? The answer… Your faith in yourself. Not faith of religion or the universe or anything outside of yourself. It is your level of consciousness and your mastery of your consciousness. We are being called to step up to a higher level of consciousness and mastery right now. I know it is easy to get caught up in fear, trust me. I own a small business with employees and our business is down 60% right now. I work on my faith in myself because power is always inside of us and not outside of us. During this time of COVID-19, social distancing, and isolation, we are being challenged every day and the biggest challenge is being faced with ourselves. We have more time with ourselves now and less distractions. We can’t go out and run a bunch of errands to get away from ourselves and whatever uncomfortable feelings we feel from being still with ourselves. We are faced with the illusion we created of telling ourselves lies that we were too busy to take the time to make ourselves a priority. This is victim mentality and we are not victims. We make choices. We are being called and challenged to consider our commitment to ourselves. It is the battle cry of our internal warrior rolling out the red carpet for our higher self to step up. Fears, Avoidance and Feelings, OH MY! Look, it’s human nature to lean away from uncomfortable feelings. In order to grow we have to consciously choose to

lean into them and that is where the rubber meets the road in growth. I have procrastinated writing this article until the last minute (and I have had PLENTY of time these days!) because my shadow voices of, “not good enough” were circling so I found many distractions and victim excuses to help me not feel them. My garage is so clean right now you could eat off the floor. The difference for me is I knew, as I was cleaning the garage, that I was avoiding. That is consciousness. I was actively working on cornering my own shadow at the same time I was avoiding. Typically, before you were stuck at home you could avoid easily and even unconsciously keep busy…not so much now. This is your golden opportunity to corner your own shadows or get help doing it. A good therapist can help you do this. It is not easy to corner your own shadow, but if you sit still long enough you will feel it and hear it. You will also feel and hear your intuition. That voice that tells you to do things for yourself, the voice you are scared to listen to, and that you distract yourself from listening to. Yes, that one. Right now fear may be a great distraction from going deeper in yourself. A lot of us have times of fear listening to the news right now. If you keep feeling scared and feeding the fear and do not ground yourself you are actually using being scared as a distraction away from a deeper connection with yourself. Crazy right? We can use ANYTHING as a distraction from being more deeply connected to ourselves.

What do you use to distract yourself away from being with yourself? Fears, worries, business, arguing with a loved one, watching Netflix, drinking, and chores… the list goes on and on. Intuition vs. Shadow Voices We all have shadow voices. They are the ones that are critical of us. They can be unconscious and subtle as all get out, as well as conscious. The more you slow down the more you can hear and feel them. That is one reason why it is hard to slow down, be still and be with yourself during this time because you WILL feel them. It is the reason we want things to “go back to normal” so quickly. It’s so we don’t have to face these parts of ourselves we have done such a good job of (not really) trying to out run. This time you have right now is a gift to you to finally face and clear these old, outdated beliefs about yourself. It is time to upgrade your consciousness and beliefs and the only way to do that is to actually sit with them, get to know them, invite them in for a chat and a coffee and stop distracting yourself. We also have our intuitive voice. It can tell you to do things you are uncomfortable with or just plain scared to do like: leave the job, leave the relationship, do the thing you’ve been procrastinating doing. If you do not listen to your intuition you create a feeling of resistance and stuckness in your system, which then creates anxiety and depression. Now is the perfect time to really get clear on what your intuition is saying and get clear on what is stopping you from following it. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

studied and clinically proven adult stem cell nutritional supplement on the market today.

Strengthen Your Immunity with Stem Cell Nutrition

After years of research a new and improved formula has been created, Stem Enhance Ultra. Today, it remains their flagship product as well as other complementary plant based proprietary products for conditions related to chronic inflammation and circulation. Similarly, they have pioneered a revolutionary skin care product line for natural stem cell skin repair and regeneration. What is StemEnhance Ultra? StemEnhance Ultra is a proprietary blend of 3 extracts from nature’s most primitive plant-based superfoods.

By Mark Parsekian dult stem cells are all the rage being touted as the next fountain of youth. They are now a scientifically proven regenerative treatment for a wide variety of common illnesses. People are looking for safe, natural and affordable options in place of harsh drugs, unwanted side effects and costly medical treatments.

StemEnhance (AFA extract): supports the release of stem cells from the bone marrow.

A

The real breakthrough with adult stem cell enhancement is that it is considered a “natural therapy”, as it harnesses the body’s own innate immune system and regenerative wisdom to help heal itself without any need for major surgery or medications. What are Stem Cells? Stem cells are the natural healing, repairing and regeneration system of the body. They are the foundation of our immune system. They are considered as the “master cells” with the unique capacity to replicate themselves throughout the body. They are released into your blood from your bone marrow as needed and differentiate into various cells such as organs, tissue, muscle, skin, and can become virtually any other type of cell in the body that needs regeneration and repair. What Does the Science Say? There are millions of lives saved and transformed due to the benefits of adult stem cells. According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute (stemcellresearchfacts.org), a leader in stem cell research and education, stem cells are being used today to help with dozens of diseases and conditions. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the number of stem cells circulating in the bloodstream is one of the best indicators of overall health. The National Institute of Health lists some 74 treatable diseases using Adult Stem Cells (ASCs) in therapy.

Fucoidan (undaria pinnatifida – a marine seaweed extract): increases the number of circulating stem cells. Mesenkine (a unique spirulina extract) -supports the release, migration and homing of stem cells.

According to Charles M. Rice, professor in Virology at The Rockefeller University, stem cells have antiviral genes that keep them protected at all times. Remarkably, stem cells are always resistant to viral attack, like flu, West Nile Virus, Zika Virus and the dengue fever. It’s not until they differentiate into other types of tissue that they turn off this antiviral gene. Why is Stem Cell Nutritional Support Important? As we age, our body’s ability to self-repair and maintain optimal health decreases due to a reduction in the number of circulating stem cells associated with the normal aging process. By increasing the number of circulating stem cells, we are able to support the body’s process of repair and renewal, as well as bringing your body back into balance. Cerule, Inc. revolutionized the natural healthcare industry with the development of StemEnhance, the world’s first clinically proven and patented stem cell enhancer. Since its inception in 2000, the company has become the leader of aqua botanical extracts made from a species of Blue Green Algae known as Aphanizonmenon flos-aquae (AFA). Validated by scientific research, multiple third-party clinical trials, and several published scientific papers and patents, StemEnhance remains the most

StemEnhance Ultra does not contain dairy, wheat, gluten, peanut, soy, corn, or allergens. There are no artificial flavors or colors. It is 100% vegetarian, non-GMO, and free from herbicides and pesticides. Just a few capsules per day produce a 25% -30% increase in the number of circulating stem cells. This can be as many as 3 to 4 million additional adult stem cells within 60 minutes after consumption. The more often you consume the supplement the greater the amount of stem cells released and migration. StemEnhance Ultra is for everyone, including animals. Young or old, athletic or health challenged. The product will give your body the support it needs to function at its best. Staying Positive Through the Storms of Life

By Sherry Kelly, PhD

H

ow do a psychologist and avid golfer weather a hurricane? I have been golfing longer than practicing psychology. I have weathered a few hurricanes, including the “big one,” Hurricane Andrew, in 1992. My training as a psychologist and my coaching as a golfer proved positively to me that one can “shoot par” even in the worst of storms. In life, we face many types of storms. There are some storms we will have to endure where we have little or no control over what we must face. However, we do have control over how we prepare, reactaccommodate to, and reframe the circumstances of the storm. I call this “shooting PAR,” and it represents three phases of utilizing Positive Psychology: Prepare, Accommodate, and Reframe (PAR). Prepare Identify the storm, the stressor, or the situation that is ahead of you. Anticipate and prepare by shielding yourself with the armor of Positive Psychology. Decide before the crisis how to prepare physically and emotionally for the situation. Be mindful of your needs, but also of your goals. Prepare with a purpose, thinking about, “how do I want to come out of this situation?” Set goals for how you would like to manage situations of stress, not simply react to them. Decide before the crisis what steps you can take to prepare for and ultimately manage the negative feelings of fear, doubt, and anger. Prepare for emotional setbacks and how you can best overcome negative self-talk, as well as criticism of others coping with the stress. Prepare with a purpose, and don’t only focus on yourself. Take the “I,” the “Me,” and the “Mine” out of the situation by focusing on goals. One crucial purpose I had was to model positive behavior in

16

a crisis situation, as well as to teach my daughter how to prepare in practical ways for a hurricane. I believe that the modeled coping strategies and behaviors would pay off years ahead in future situations. Acknowledge and appreciate the life lesson about preparing and coping to be shared with someone younger than yourself. An effective strategy was to engage in activities that would help others prepare and to be a positive light for others. For example, our family helped evacuate some elderly friends to hotels before the storm. We also checked on the homes of neighbors who were forced to evacuate. Accommodate We live in a world where we are bombarded with negativity, but how we perceive our experiences and compartmentalize events can help us manage life’s stressors. Ask yourself what about the situation (in my case, the storm) you may be resisting. A wise man at Kripalu once taught me that stress is resistance to “what is.” Ask yourself what you may be resisting. Is it the stress of not making the right decision or not preparing in advance? Don’t look back or dwell on past experiences while in the midst of your storm. Instead, be in the present and don’t focus on what you could have done or should have done. Imagine yourself moving forward through the experience. Stay in the present and don’t place emotions and other life frustrations in the “storm drain.” Don’t blame those around you. Cloak yourself with a shield of positivity. Try to find bits of gratitude for each step forward you take through the storm. Try to do something positive for someone else. Reframe How we process a situation, even a stressful one, will ultimately shape our memory of it. This is how the previous two

steps in PAR, preparation, and accommodation, will “tee you up” for positive reframing. In your mind, build a positive “frame” around the experience. Deciding to positively rethink and reframe an event will propel you forward and upward. Do not dwell on the negative. Instead, actively think about the situation in a positive way. What did you do right? What did you learn? How did you model positive behaviors for others? Think of your mind as a giant file cabinet. How you file information will later dictate how you find it. Positively reframing situations takes practice. Remember that resiliency builds upon self-efficacy. Enhance the reframing stage with some gratitude and thanks. Find a pebble of positivity in every situation and a mountain of possibilities will emerge on your horizon. A parting golf tip for positivity: It’s not about your last shot, it’s about your NEXT shot! Being Stressed Doesn’t Have To Be So Stressful By Jennifer Ljungquist-DeMayo

O

n a day-to-day basis, we are generally able to undergo various amounts of stress that doesn’t appear to influence our functioning. However, the feeling of being overwhelmed by COVID-19, or just overwhelmed constantly from everyone in every direction is another story. Toxic stress can appear unmanageable. It tends to have an impact on our physical, spiritual and mental health. Thus, many people will find that prolonged periods of stress gone untreated will result in anxiety, physical ailments, difficulties with work-life balance, and one’s overall spiritual well-being. With just a bit of knowledge in identifying, understanding and managing stress, we can avoid this. Let’s group stress into two categories: eustress and distress. Eustress is the type of stress we experience that is necessary in our life in order to push our body, mind and actions to reach our potential; like childbirth or marriage. Distress, on the other hand, can be long-term or short-term, and cause us to have decreased performance and loss of hope in our abilities, and can lead to more concerning mental health issues, let alone generalized anxiety symptoms. Unmanaged stress can have detrimental effects on our mind, body and spiritual health. Stress can result in difficulties with concentration, regulation of emotions, and can increase the severity of already present mental health issues. Unmanaged stress can lead to many physical issues. Stress causes our body to release copious amounts of the hormone cortisol. This causes our brain and body to become inflamed and vulnerable to infection. Prolonged and untreated mental health issues resulting from unmanaged stress can result in inflammatory issues such as IBS, eczema, acid reflux, chronic headaches, chronic pain, and trouble sleeping (improper sleep impacts our body’s ability to regulate emotions, let alone contributes to physical issues). Spiritually, stress can have an impact on our well-being. This is important in order to feel a sense of purpose and identity. When

we are under immense stress, it can become difficult to want to focus on your higher power, your values, and belief systems. It is easy to see how unmanaged stress can impact our whole well-being! Now, stress is necessary in our lives. Without the feeling of a possible stressful situation, we might not be able to protect ourselves from sensing trouble as we walk by a dark alley. Therefore, stress is necessary to protect ourselves. How can you better begin to manage stress? Start with identifying it. The following are some common signs and symptoms: • Poor sleep patterns • Poor appetite • Increase in irritability and/or mood swings • Decrease in productivity • Decreased pleasure in things you once enjoyed • Withdrawal from family/social supports • Increase in body tension, headaches or jaw/shoulder/back pain • Increase in illness frequency and length • Feeling as though, “I can’t shut my mind off,” “This is too much for me,” “I have no time” • Increase in use of alcohol/drugs • Sudden onset/increase in suicidal thoughts (contact 911) • Withdrawal from use of your s piritual coping mechanisms (yoga, meditation, prayer) If you have identified with one or more of these issues, it may be beneficial to seek professional help via your local therapist, medical doctor or emergency room. If stress has moved on to causing physical and mental health ailments, you will want a team of support to help you

• Creating a routine to manage your daily tasks and needs • Engaging in physical activity for at least 30 minutes, 3-5 days per week • Utilizing healthy social supports • Knowing when to say no, understanding that you are just as important as everyone else • Taking breaks at work as needed • Taking regular inventory of your well-being • Intuitively eating colorful foods • Drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily • Practicing regular relaxation daily; meditation, progressive muscle relaxation Being stressed, doesn’t have to be so stressful! Remember, stress can be a GOOD thing. In fact, we need it in our lives in order to function, meet milestones and keep ourselves safe. Inspire Your Gifts: Heart Path Therapy® By Debra Franklin, LCSW

A

lthough this time can be challenging, it is a time for change, hope, and evaluating what is really important in your life. Let your spiritually guided leaders and healers show you the spiritual path. It is an opportunity to dive deeper into your own healing and awakening to discover who you are and why you are on this earth. No matter what theories you see and hear about the coronavirus, whether conspiracy, lies, or other, listen to the elders of the sacred traditions and indigenous ways that hold a deep truth. They say this virus came due to universal laws of nature being disobeyed; making reference to the horrors of what we have done to animals, and to each other in word, thought, or deed. Instead of anger, they suggest we send prayers toward our political leaders to wake up—for ourselves and all of humanity. We hold the key to our healing and awakening and getting released from this virus. By changing our own lives, we can inspire our own hearts to release the things that have been harmful. What has caused society’s ills to unconsciously be feeding ourselves, negative emotional as well as physical “food” that does not serve us or the environment? Looking deeper, we see that most people carry childhood trauma, which has been passed down from ancestry causing us to forget who we are and the gifts spirit has given us. Heart Path Therapy® Inspired to create Heart Path Therapy®, I have helped many to heal the earlier wounds that cause the fears, addictions, and attachments to things that get in the way of living life with love, honor, and gratitude and an inspired sense of purpose. 18

Natural Nutmeg - June 2020

Heart Path Therapy® is an integration of transformational approaches that get to the source of what is needed to heal, in early childhood and ancestry, but also teaches the spiritual ways to create peace and harmony in your life from the sacred traditions. The practices of praying a few times a day, yoga, meditation, singing sacred songs, and honoring the elements of air, earth, fire, and water daily, inspires healing and insight into your gifts and hearing spirit’s voice. Attachments & Addictions All attachments and addictions, including to relationships, cause suffering, as emphasized by the Buddhist tradition. They are always a temporary and limited way to happiness along with their associated illusions and unfulfilled expectations. When we heal, pray, and serve from the heart, a more profound happiness is felt from within as opposed to finding it outside of us. All our attachments are being challenged, as our lives have now been limited by this quarantine and force us to take time to reevaluate life’s deeper meaning. All crises and suffering are a gateway to healing and growing. I have had the pleasure of witnessing hundreds of clients gain their own wisdom as they heal the trauma that has caused the attachments, addictions, relationship struggles, anxiety, and depression. They become freed to serve with their own creative gifts with love. Whether a healer, an artist, a musician, or yoga teacher, you can help awaken others with your gifts after you have awakened.

The degree to which love was compromised in your earlier life, is the degree to which your struggles and illusions will be created and repeated. Take time to heal whatever love was missing. Pray to go deep into the infinite ocean of love as that is where the healing, wisdom, and intuitive voice of spirit exists. Take responsibility for your struggles and with the guidance of a gifted therapist or healer, allow the pain to be a gateway to look deeper into yourself and your healing. With tools like inner child work, Family Constellations (work with ancestral trauma), guided imagery, and energy psychology, I intuitively help others release their suffering. They then see the beauty of who they are and why they are here, and become inspired to serve and help others with their heartfelt gifts. Together we can learn to live in peace and harmony within ourselves, with each other, the animals, the earth, the heavens, and feel a deep sense of unity and gratitude with all things. Debra Franklin, LCSW has 33 years of psychotherapeutic experience. Her training in inner childwork, guided imagery, Family Constellations, and energy psychology, and her spiritual teacher, Maestro Manual Rufino, and spiritual community, the Golden Drum inspired her creation of Heart Path Therapy®. She offers a Heart Path Therapy® online group in meditative healing and spiritual practices and trains therapists and practitioners. www.progressivepsychotherapy.com. 860-995-3457. debrafranklin@progressivepsychotherapy.com. Redefine Retirement: Plan to Live Life on Your Terms! By Caroline Wetzel, CFP®, MBA, AWMA®

W

ill you celebrate Mother’s and Father’s Day this May and June? Perhaps you’ll spend time honoring your Mom and Dad. Maybe someone will seek out time to acknowledge you and all that you’ve done. Recently I spent time with my parents, who will turn 70 and 81 this year. As we lingered over Mom’s homemade apple pie in their dining room, I realized how fortunate I am. First, I am blessed to learn from my parents; as they navigate the aging process with care, grace, and intention they often share with me both successes and challenges. And second, I am privileged to work with clients daily to plan financially for changes in their lives so that they can manage their own futures with confidence.

When my parents started their retirement, they embraced their new lifestyle. Their schedules varied day to day and week to week. Some days were free of any commitments or obligations, and they enjoyed choosing to do something spontaneous or do nothing at all – “just be” as Dad would say. At other times their days were so filled with activities, from lunches with friends to volunteer work to exercise and Church, that Mom and Dad would joke, “How did we ever find time to work before retirement?” I’ll never forget one crisp October morning when my parents knew that my brother would be visiting my husband and me in Connecticut, they secretly made the 5+ hour trip to our home, surprised us at our doorstep and, together, we all went pumpkin picking. What memories they created for all of us that day!

Many Americans are living longer lives than previous generations and different people prepare financially for this reality in various ways. From when they first started working as a college professor and high school teacher, my parents diligently monitored their expenses and saved and invested regularly over time. While they enjoyed their work as teachers, they did aspire some day to retire, and they understood that the decisions they made daily around their finances decades before retirement began would impact their future choices.

Over time, the pace of my parents’ retirement lifestyle changed. After a few years of retirement, they mentioned that they preferred driving in the daylight to driving in the dark, so they changed “dinner date nights” to “lunch dates”. And a while later, when we’d all get together for family weekends, they explained that mornings “took a bit more time than they used to,” so we agreed we’d go to Church on Saturday evenings rather than Sunday mornings. And just last year, the unforeseen happened. My father, a dedicated gardener, got a tick bite and was diagnosed with Lyme

Disease. It was incredibly disruptive and very challenging for him and my Mom. Dad suddenly was exhausted all of the time, unable to enjoy life in the way he and Mom were accustomed; and Mom took on new and additional tasks as Dad focused on recovery. They began paying different professionals to take care of home maintenance tasks that they had covered by themselves for years. The reality that they were embarking on a new stage in their retirement lifestyle became very clear when they shared somberly with my brother, husband, and me that they no longer felt they could make the trip to where we live because “it was just too much”. I am grateful for Mom and Dad’s honesty and courage and how they’re sharing their retirement journey with me. We as a family are living the reality that I strive to help clients and their families consider and plan for financially; retirement can be a 30+ year experience filled with different life changes. Over the years, I have developed hundreds of financial plans for clients. With the majority of Americans expected to live into their 80s, each of these financial plans now projects men and women living into their 90s. When clients share with me that retirement is a goal for them, our conversation delves into what retirement looks like for them. A Personal Journey to Boost My Immunity with Nariveda Supplements

By Frances Wall Higgins

A

few months ago, I had the pleasure of speaking with Nirmal Yogi and learning about Nariveda's Ayurvedic Supplements. Nirmal and his son, Adrian, teamed up together to create their carefully researched and formulated supplements that help people with immunity, stress, cardiovascular health, brain function, aging, bones, joints, and more. After 40+ years of experience as an organic chemist and by being a devout practitioner of Ayurveda, Nirmal developed and formulated Nariveda's powerful Elixirs. With a healthy amount of divine guidance dovetailed with the innate richness of his Ayurvedic upbringing and reverence for spiritual connection, Nirmal leads the research and development of Nariveda's products. Adrian's background is in health and fitness. As a distance runner, competitive skier, cyclist, and rock climber; Adrian cares deeply for personal wellness and understands the importance of high performance nutrition. When his father approached him to be involved in the world's first liquid-based Adaptogenic nutrition company, he jumped at the opportunity. Adrian feels fortunate to have the ability to work alongside his father in bringing advanced, functional plantbased nutrition to the world. So luckily for me, just as COVID-19 became a reality, I decided to try 3 of their supplements that are immune-boosting and aid with stress reduction. When the bottles arrived, I was surprised at how large they are. Each one is 8.5 ounces, which should last for 30 - 45 days. Each morning I mix two tablespoons of Prana Veda with fresh orange juice. I was concerned the flavor would be bitter, but it tastes great. I feel healthy, energetic, and have been sleeping better than ever. The ingredients are remarkable in this supplement: 1. Ashwagandha is a powerful herb that helps the body a dapt to stress and can boost energy, muscular strength, stamina, and endurance. 2. ArginoCarn enhances both lipolysis and fatty acid (stored energy) oxidation, mobilizing into working tissue for cellular metabolism while decreasing oxidative stress variables. ®

3. Clarinol® Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is a unique fatty acid clinically shown to reduce body fat, increase lean muscle, and promote a healthy metabolism. 4. Curcumin C3 Complex® is 95% Tetrahydrocurcuminoids extracts obtained from turmeric rhizomes creating a higher bioavailable, stable, and active nutrient. Curcumin possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties as well as reduces systemic oxidative stress.

5. MicroActive-Resveratrol is an antioxidant polyphenol that supports a healthy metabolism, normal insulin sensitivity, and optimal blood flow; all of which may have cardiovascular, brain, and anti-aging benefits. 6. MicroActive-CoQ10 is a natural, vitamin-like, fat-soluble antioxidant found in the mitochondria of almost all the cells in the body. It is used in the electron transport chain that generates 90-95% of the energy used by the body. Twice a day, I am using Perio Veda, which is an Ayurvedic Dental Rinse. I immediately felt like this was a superior rinse than the mouthwash I have been using, which is slightly sweet. My mouth feels healthier, cleaner, and plaque-free. Perio Veda works synergistically, helping directly to enhance the concentration of essential minerals in bioavailable forms for cell ready absorption. It works to promote remineralization of enamel by decreasing bacteria thus creating a holistic environment of healthy microflora for optimal oral health. The supplement contains the most potent blend of oral health promoting herbs and organic compounds available. This cutting-edge formula controls biofilm formation that causes bad breath while promoting the regeneration of healthy microflora. Everything you need to keep your mouth healthy and fresh without any of the toxic fillers.

Traditional Chinese Medicine for Women’s Health By Donna Bunte, MSOM, L.Ac

M

ore and more people are turning to Chinese medicine to find relief from symptoms and for healing in the long term for many health concerns. Treating women’s issues is one of the areas that Chinese medicine has been used effectively for thousands of years. Most people know about acupuncture for pain but that is really the tip of the iceberg with regard to what Chinese medicine can treat. Chinese medicine includes Chinese medical diagnosis, acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, and mind body exercises such as qigong and tai chi and meditation which are used in combination depending on the condition of the patient. Women’s Health Issues Women’s health issues can begin during adolescence and might include weight fluctuations, skin problems, PMS, depression and anxiety, menstrual irregularities and contraception. When a woman reaches child bearing age there can be concerns with ovulation, PCOS, fibroids, endometriosis, and of course infertility, pregnancy and postpartum issues. During the midlife years, women can become concerned with perimenopause and menopausal issues such as hot flashes, irritability and depression, anxiety, and insomnia. After menopause, issues such as vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, loss of skin firmness and vitality can become major concerns. Many women turn to western medicine to treat these issues but there are sometimes side effects and health repercussions to consider. From a Chinese medicine perspective women’s health and fertility is based on healthy reproductive function. Anything that disrupts that function, brings hormones to an unbalanced state, or slows down or clogs blood flow will disrupt the delicate balance in the reproductive system and cause any of the problems mentioned above. Birth control

in effect, does this by suppressing hormones and blocking blood flow. For women who have been on birth control for many years it can take a long time to bring the body back to a balanced state. Traditional Chinese medicine identifies a few differentiations to be the main causes of women’s reproductive issues. The first is kidney deficiency with possible symptoms of extreme fatigue, scanty periods, low back pain, and heat or cold. The others are blood deficiency with scanty periods, pale skin, and chilliness; liver stagnation with painful menstruation, tender breasts, irritability and heavy flow; dampness and blood stagnation can present with pain, and other various symptoms. Each can have western medical correlations with relation to hormones, thyroid and other issues. But one must remember that these are ways that Chinese medicine diagnoses and are treated with Chinese herbal formulas, diet and lifestyle changes that address all the presenting signs and symptoms. Healthy Lifestyle for Healthy Reproductive System How do women attempt to prevent these issues from occurring and maintain a healthy reproductive system? A balanced lifestyle is key. Eating a balanced healthy diet that is right for each individual and for the season is very important. For instance, if a woman tends to get cold easily she should avoid cold, damp foods, icy drinks, and submerging in cold water. Foods that throw off the balance of gut health can easily change one’s chemistry causing imbalances in the reproductive system. Not eating too late in the evening is also beneficial for digestion as well as for sleep. Going to bed before midnight and sleeping at least 8 hours is vital for the body, its organs and immune system in

order to restore itself. Exercise incorporated into one’s lifestyle will keep many systems of the body healthy whether it is running, walking, yoga, tai chi, or any other form of movement. Besides the physical benefits, exercise increases endorphins which are mood enhancing hormones and help to create a state of wellbeing. Lastly, stress reduction techniques or mind body exercises like meditation, breathing exercises, qigong and tai chi are not to be forgotten. We all have hectic lifestyles these days so it is more important than ever to stop the constant overstimulation and calm the mind and the nervous system. A Chinese medical practitioner can help a woman find out where her imbalances are in any phase of her life. They will develop a treatment and maintenance plan incorporating acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary guidelines with food and necessary supplements, mind body exercises as well as suggestions for self-care allowing the woman to take part in her own healing and to reach her desired heath goals. The Role of IV Nutrient Therapy in Chronic Disease

By Carissa Fioritto, ND, RN

I

V therapy is a relatively new method of delivering medicine to patients with its popularity taking off in the 1950s. It is a quick, effective way to administer fluids as well as medications. It has helped save lives by rapidly administering life-saving drugs, such as antibiotics. IV therapy is a safe way to administer high doses of vitamins or minerals to the body as well, as they can be delivered right away to cells which can uptake them for use. In contrast, when a nutrient is taken into the body by mouth, it is broken down in the stomach and absorbed by the small intestine and then enters the bloodstream. Vitamins are not absorbed well in the GI system. The percentage absorbed goes down with any level of GI dysfunction like low stomach acid, bacterial dysbiosis, malabsorption, or inflammation. On top of the potential GI dysfunction, our world is more toxic today than ever before. We are exposed to constant insults including poor food quality, infections, chemicals, pollution, alcohol, and heavy metals. With all these factors, it is no wonder that there is an increase in chronic diseases in our country. These can range from chronic pain, chronic hidden infections like lyme disease, autoimmune conditions, hormone imbalances, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The body has an increased demand for vitamins and minerals so it can detoxify these pollutants and regenerate healthy cells. This is where IV therapy comes into play. Mega doses of nutrients can be given safely, and the body can be rapidly repleted. It helps the body deal with stress, detoxification, immune function, cellular functions, life extension, and regeneration. IV Vitamin C IV Vitamin C is a very common nutrient given to patients. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that fights free radicals. While we do get it from our diet, our body is under a lot of stress that can deplete levels of this nutrient. When given intravenously, it is very safe and very high doses can be administered. For most people, a modest dose from 5-20 grams is enough to make an impact. However, there are cases where 50 or even 100 grams of Vitamin C can be given in one session for immune support. Acutely, it can be very helpful for colds and flus. Vitamin C can also benefit anyone dealing with chronic diseases, and even chronic allergies will respond to higher doses of Vitamin C. IV Poly-MVA Another IV is Poly-MVA, or lipoic acid mineral complex (LAMC). It contains complex molecules that can enter a cell and work on the mitochondria to create energy. Like Vitamin C therapy, this therapy

has multiple benefits. It has been shown to be protective for the neurologic and cardiac system. It also promotes DNA repair, protects cells against toxins and helps improve quality of life measures. Because it helps produce energy in the cells, it helps with fatigue levels and overall well-being. IV Glutathione Glutathione is the body’s most powerful antioxidant and has an affinity for the neurological system. Since many chronic diseases are a result of oxidative stress, glutathione is easily depleted in patients. It can help repair and regenerate cells and tissues in the body, specifically if neuropathies are present. Since treatments and chronic diseases can deplete many other nutrients, it is best to give glutathione with a nutrient IV. Many nutrients are necessary cofactors to help the body recycle glutathione, which makes it more effective. Myers Cocktail Having proper nutrients will help with quality of life measures such as energy, pain levels, and mental functioning. These formulas are also rehydrating as well. Many people are chronically dehydrated and never realize it. Nutrient IV formulas can vary widely depending on the practitioner. Many nutrient IVs are labeled as a “Myers cocktail”. This was pioneered by Dr. John Myers, MD. He used a standard mixture of nutrients to help a variety of complaints successfully. Nutrient IVs can include any and all the following nutrients: B complex including B12, Vitamin C, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, Trace Minerals, Selenium, and Amino Acids. Many times, people are using oral supplements and not feeling the effects. Having a series of nutrient IVs can be a great boost in nutrient stores. As the cells get replenished, many people will notice that their oral supplements have a larger effect day to day. IV nutrient therapy can support a person safely through managing any chronic disease. While none of these therapies are a replacement for standard treatment or curative, there are many studies demonstrating the efficacy of these treatments in supporting the body. IV therapy is a great addition to care while dealing with chronic illnesses and for building a strong foundation and improving quality of life. Acupuncture for Stress & Immunity: Just the Medicine for These Anxious Times By Matthew Maneggia, LAc

T

he public awareness of acupuncture has grown by leaps and bounds since I first started my practice 13 years ago. This is a testament not only to the profound efficacy of acupuncture, but to its ever-growing acceptance from the conventional medical world. Much of that acceptance is due to a continually expanding field of research proving the benefits of acupuncture for a myriad of ailments. While most people are aware of its benefits for pain relief, fewer are aware of how great acupuncture is at boosting the immune system. However, as the data on acupuncture’s effects on pain becomes solidified, new and better research is emerging on how it affects immunity. Acupuncture for Stress Reduction Before diving too deeply into the research, we should note one of the most important ways in which acupuncture boosts immune function - stress relief. Anecdotally, patients report improvements in their reactions to psychological stress as something of a side-effect of treatment. Countless times, I have heard patients remark at how surprised they are to find that, although the stressors in their lives have not changed, they are reacting to that stress with much less intensity. And while we can amplify these stressrelieving effects using specific acupuncture points, even folks who are being treated for something as unrelated as low back pain note a significant reduction in stress. So why is this? Well, for one thing, we know that acupuncture has a direct effect on the prefrontal cortex. This is the area of the brain that regulates the sympathetic nervous system (fight-or-flight) alongside the parasympathetic nervous system (rest-and-digest). Acupuncture not only significantly reduces sympathetic hyperactivity, it actively stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. As our physical reaction to stress decreases, our bodies produce less inflammatory substances like cortisol. With lower levels of inflammation come higher levels of immune function. So not only are we feeling happier and less stressed, our bodies are more robustly able to fight off infection. While the stress-relieving effects of acupuncture are great, they are not the only way in which acupuncture benefits the immune system.

Acupuncture and Your Immune System Central to the parasympathetic nervous system is the vagus nerve. This nerve forms the “brain-gut” axis in which the gastrointestinal (GI) tract communicates with the brain. Via vagal nerve stimulation, along with stimulating increased blood perfusion to the GI tract, acupuncture protects the integrity of the intestinal mucosa. The mucosa is where the billions of beneficial bacteria reside in the GI tract. These friendly bacteria form a significant portion of the immune system, excreting massive quantities of antibodies into the gut. They need a healthy ecosystem in which to thrive and studies show that acupuncture does indeed provide that healthy environment. Research shows that acupuncture has a direct effect on the body’s production of certain specific immune cells. T-cells are a type of lymphocyte produced in the thymus gland that play a central role in immune response. One study measured serum levels

of T-cells both before and after a prescribed course of acupuncture treatments. The study separated the participants into two groups young adults and older adults. Not only did the research show that T-cell counts went up significantly among both groups, the difference in pre and post treatment counts was greater in the group of older adults. Additionally, although T-cell counts did decrease 3 months after the acupuncture treatments, they were still significantly higher than before the treatments were administered in both groups. While the previous study shows how profoundly acupuncture can boost immunity in older people, other studies show that other vulnerable groups benefit greatly from treatment as well. A meta-analysis of multiple studies found that acupuncture has similarly strong immunomodulatory effects among lung cancer patients. Not only did this review find that acupuncture increased certain subsets of T-cells, it was associated with an increase in other important immune cells such as Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and natural killer (NK) cells. Acupuncture also reduced the bone marrow suppression that is a common side effect of conventional cancer treatment, allowing the bone marrow to better function in its production of many of the blood cells and lymphocytes that are integral to immune function. A Path of Heart

By Janice Juliano, MSW, LCSW

W

hile I write this I am at home providing telehealth for my clients through my Psychotherapy practice. It is a frightening time for so many, everything that was taken for granted has changed in what seems like an instant. It is also a time to pause and determine new priorities, to look at what has needed to change and what truly is the best or highest good for people and society in general. For me, it has been a time for self-evaluation. In many ways, I welcome this opportunity. This past year I was diagnosed with breast cancer, had surgery and treatment, and I am doing well overall. I am working to stay healthy through this in mindbody-spirit and taking seriously all the recommended precautions to stay safe. At times, as probably most have, I have felt fear, grief, anger. However, looking at the “big picture,” I now see this as a necessary break for the whole world. Noteworthy is the fact that this experience, through which we are living, was predicted by various indigenous cultures. A connection with Earth and Nature is helping me along the way. I embarked on my experiential journey in Earth Spirituality and the Medicine Wheel teachings in 1994 with a mentor who is an intuitive and an artist. She resided in Connecticut at that time but had lived in many places in the West and the South. I had not understood at that time the impact her teachings would have on

my life. At that time, I had been a social worker for about 20 years in various state agencies. I was stressed, depressed and physically exhausted. That year, I had lost my grandmother and I had also lost a significant relationship. I was searching for a deeper meaning for life and my life at that time was very dark. I started work with my mentor in the fall with medicine walks. Simple enough, a medicine walk is a walk with mindfulness and a deep awareness in the moment. Immediately, I noticed how brilliant the fall leaves appeared to me. Up until then I had not really “seen” them. Over time with various experiences with her teachings, I deeply connected with the Earth and found a peace which I had never experienced. I learned to find medicine objects – feathers, rocks, plants that seemed to give me direction. My mentor directed me to stay away from reading books and to stay out of my head. She encouraged me to feel the lessons the Earth was sharing intuitively. Looking at the lessons from this point, I placed myself in the mantle of the Earth (Gaia). I experienced Medicine Wheel Ceremonies, Bear Medicine and worked intensively preparing to embark on a quest for a vision in the spring in 1995 in Colorado. The experience was life changing, I opened to realms I had not known existed. I have since experienced 3 more vision quests during the following years in New Mexico and in

Connecticut. They have all shaped my life in ways I would never have imagined. Each Medicine Wheel Ceremony, each Medicine Walk, each Vision Quest has brought me closer to Nature, Earth, Gaia. One can heal on this journey and through this, importantly, one can assist in healing the Earth. For me, these teachings and experiences have become a life-long quest. I continued to learn many profound lessons while residing in New Mexico from 1998 until 2006. The energy in the high desert in New Mexico is electric and intense on many levels. I was re-formed and re-molded in the fiery kiln of the Southwest. I faced many personal challenges and learned to face the shadow within, the part of me that could be selfdestructive. I survived having little money, being the last hired and first fired when layoffs happened. I lived alone and missed my family in Connecticut as well. The journey was not an easy one, but it filled my Spirit. While in New Mexico for one of my social work jobs, I had the great honor of serving Native American populations. The people were grounded and so much a part of the land. Those who I met were respectful and grateful for the services provided. I felt so many commonalities with them. They valued respect and care for their elders, held respect for the land, recognized and honored the cycles of nature, understood that their youth are their future and even included their young people in www.NaturalNutmeg.com

planning meetings. Most had some type of creative outlet and understood how vital creativity is for one’s life. Even through genocide, substance abuse, poverty and all that goes along with poverty, there is a palpable strength in the people which I admired and for which I have reverence. Their path is truly a Path of Heart. As previously stated, many indigenous teachings have foretold an awakening on our Earth. Foretold was that this will be a great cleansing, a challenge for all that will lead us to a new age. A new beginning where collaboration, cooperation and the heart will reign. I feel that time is here. The New Earth is birthing. We now have an opportunity to reconnect with the Earth and with each other in a new way, with ONE HEART. As I write this, we are in early springtime. In spite of the coronavirus or maybe along with it, we can take the time to reconnect with nature. The birds are nesting and singing and the plants and flowers are revealing themselves once again, waking up from their winter sleep. The green is starting to appear on the land. Turn off your phones, turn off the television and reconnect with the Earth. Practice mindfulness and be in the moment. Feel the gentle breezes and warm sun. The Earth is there, waiting for you. If you are still and quiet, you may even hear the breath of Gaia as the sun sets at dusk and you might even feel the beating of her Heart, reaching out to yours. She invites you to take the Path of Heart.

Access Unlimited Mental Well-Being By Lori Carpenos, LMFT

W

e have all been tested over the past months; some physically, others mentally and spiritually as we attempt to make sense of a pandemic. I notice my thoughts jumping from wondering how we will get through this to hoping for a healthier planet to compassion for those who are experiencing sickness and lost loved ones. Through it all I witness a sweetness behind the human spirit as people reach out to one another to lend a hand and assist in any way they can. Standing in line at my local Trader Joe's, I was reminded of the many unsung and often unseen heroes as I stepped over painted lines on the sidewalk marking six feet between shoppers. Each line had different colorful sayings painted above it (celebrate our healthcare workers, celebrate our warehouse workers, celebrate our taxi drivers, spread love not germs!) Reminders of the strength and love of the human spirit are everywhere. I know I am not the only person to experience such a wide range of emotions. I also know that I have an advantage over many because of my exposure to an understanding about the human mind. I am not special, however, since this understanding is available to everyone. Nature has gifted all of us with the ability to understand how to access our innate mental well-being regardless of situations or circumstances. This understanding about the human psyche is referred to as The Three Principles of Mind, Thought and Consciousness; Innate Health; The Inside-out Understanding; and Health Realization. Mental wellbeing is key to everything! I have noticed this fact in my own life as well as in my clients’ lives. Because of what I learned about Innate Health and the Three Principles, I know that: • I don’t need to be afraid of my experiences, regardless of the thoughts that are flowing through me.

• I don’t have to judge them, resist them, or take them seriously. Yes, some thoughts are more pleasant to experience than others, but knowing that all thoughts are transitory and will naturally pass on their own accord helps me ride out any thought-storm. • I live in the “feeling of my thinking” - every thought we have has a feeling tagging along with it, whether we know that or not. Even though I can’t control the thoughts that pop into my head, I do have the freewill to pay attention to the thoughts that will benefit myself and others and let the rest go. • I am innately resilient; regardless of circumstances or situations. • All of this “knowing” is on a deeper level beyond the intellect. It's not something I need to practice; there are no strategies or techniques to perform, only an understanding of the workings of the mind. The mind is not a physical thing; it is the formless spiritual energy that powers the physical brain. Because it is formless energy, understanding the mind can only come from insight; from taking time to look within oneself. It is helpful to take this inner journey with a guide or mentor who has done the same. Here is a list of mentors around the world: https://3pgc. org/practitioner-directory/. “Dr. Bill,” as he has come to be known, is a psychiatrist in Phoenix, Arizona. He offers an eight-week online course called: The Mind, Brain, Body, Behavior Connection. It’s a fascinating course on this profound understanding of the mind. The rewards of this understanding are truly beyond imagination. It's like being given a lifetime key to mental well-being, regardless of external circumstances.

Knowing how to access unlimited mental well-being keeps people free of anxiety, depression, and chronic stress. We’ve known for a long time the toll that chronic stress takes on our physical health and our immune system. I have found the best way to share this understanding is by immersion in a retreat setting over a period of 4 - 7 days. This can be accomplished in a number of ways by: 1. An “in-home retreat” from the comfort of your own home on a computer screen. 2. A “hotel retreat” if your home life isn't conducive to an educational retreat (i.e. young children or other demands at home) then consider staying at a nearby hotel and be seen at my local office in West Hartford. 3. Attend one of our retreats in the Caribbean. The next one is scheduled for Nov 14 - Nov 20, 2020. Everyone has the ability to access their innate mental well-being more often, from which we are all more compassionate, resourceful, creative, productive, motivated, and more loving. Lori Carpenos, LMFT, Founder of 3 Principles Therapy, works with Couples, Families, Individuals, a variety of adult and young adult groups, and Executives wanting to improve their corporate culture. She is the author of a young adult book, It’s An Inside-Out World, the co-author of The Secret of Love and co-facilitator for Caribbean Retreats and a contributor to The Secret of Love Podcast. www.3principlestherapy.com. 860.561.1919. When a pandemic escapes from Pandora’s box and changes the face of our world seemingly overnight, anything we think is disconnected is quickly negated. Suddenly, we find ourselves having a direct experience of the famous adage that goes something like, “The flap of a butterfly’s wings in our garden affects the winds in Beijing.” It seems an absurd thought, too infinitesimal to ever make any reasonable sense. Yet now we’re living smack in the middle of its truth. Only this time, the adage is working in reverse. In some far eastern Chinese city, the “flap” of a mutant virus has affected the entire globe and wreaked havoc with the familiar garden of our experience. While some of us may avoid exposure or dodge illness, many more have been afflicted by some form of economic fallout, the scope of which is heightened by the existing degrees of privilege or poverty we’ve lived with until now.

winter unleashed a swarm of personal earthquakes this spring, the seismic magnitude of impacts measured by how long and how deep we’ve buried things we don’t want to look at. I am a nature-based life coach and educator committed to supporting others as they move as gracefully as possible within the winds of unexpected change and uncertainty. It’s clear to me that COVID-19 is the opportunity to explore this butterfly effect in the midst of a high-wire threat. Every bit of sharp attention is required to stay awake and not miss the navigational cues embedded in such challenging circumstances.

Carrie, a co-adventurer and client, recently phoned me from sequestration in northern New England with a desire to embark on the next phase of her healing journey. Two years earlier, a Lyme Disease diagnosis shattered her world. COVID-19 added to the mix, an exposure threatened her already-compromised immune system. She couldn’t see a future. While recounting the Even more widespread ripples of connection and winds story that toppled her health, career, and a relationship, Carrie of change unleashed by that Asian butterfly used the word “betrayal” at least three times. have come in the form of a plague of fear and “This betrayal has fallen over my vision like a a disruption of normalcy. It is both a collective is interrupted and we’re left squirming with Carrie recognized it as having been with her and deeply personal inconvenience, coming face to face with our forever, but was usually absent from her dayblind attachments to predictability and false opportunity. to-day awareness. certainty that have kept us deeply asleep to Our stories always contain the remedies ourselves and one another. for our challenges, if we’re awake enough to It doesn’t matter if we find ourselves in Wuhan, Paris, or New hear them. We’re in this together, as the empty storefront signs and What if betrayal isn’t the end of all life ahead? What if billboards along the now uncongested highways suggest. betrayal is the navigational directive itself? Maybe the very thing The more we’ve built our lives on the fault lines of a that literally plagued Carrie (and plagues us all) is actually the fractured world, the more we’re being jogged awake to discover roadmap to our redemption. Like buds on a branch, each difeverything is connected to everything else, no matter how ferent from the others, spring is a time when betray all colors in subtle the affinity. In adolescence, betray all helps us plug our ears to what we’ve been told by our parents and other “authorities,” so we can discover the unique voice that is our own. This is the place where discovery of what’s possible is revealed when the familiar falls away, when cultural conditioning and who we’ve known ourselves to be are challenged by the disruption of business as usual. Betray all is the practice of social distancing at its best: not disconnected, but a stepping back that allows us to recognize our connectedness and to find shelter in our individuation. As Carrie and I explored betray all as a fresh perspective, a new “visor” to pull down over her eyes, she discovered the opportunity to use what blocked her from moving forward as a welcome steppingstone. Perhaps Carrie’s flapping butterfly wings carry a message to all of us in this time of discovering the interface of our personal and global connection, in this place where COVID-19, betrayal and butterflies of spring flutter together. Each of us has the opportunity to recognize the trials of this time as a realignment, to use the dissolving of familiar moorings to open a whole new world where individuation and connectedness can reside as partners. As we make our own discoveries and embrace what truths are unseated by the challenge found in our own stories and responses to COVID-19, we gain a momentum that has the capacity to change the greater world as we change our personal one. This virulent spread of a new beginning represents a level of powerful sharing rooted in a long-forgotten past. The butterfly effect isn’t so subtle after all, but a profound truth that has long awaited our discovery. A New Treatment for Libido & Sexual Dysfunction By Henry Sobo, MD

T

he peptide PT 141 has been shown to have a substantial effect on libido, generating sexual arousal in both men and women. It can work as an alternative to Viagra for erectile dysfunction in men. This peptide is able to cross the “blood-brainbarrier,” bypassing the vascular system and acting at the level of the central nervous system. This property gives PT-141 an advantage over traditional ED drugs like Viagra and Cialis, which can decrease blood pressure and cause side effects. A placebo controlled medical study reported the following; among women who attempted sexual intercourse within 24 hours after treatment, significantly more were satisfied with their level of sexual arousal following PT-141, compared with placebo. The effects may be felt up to 12 hours from the time of administration and have been known to last for up to 3 days, diminishing each day. PT- 141 has been shown to have significant results on male test patients, with what is described as “intense” and “frequent” erections lasting between 2-6 hours. For women, PT-141 has been shown to be effective in treating sexual dysfunction and sexual arousal disorder in women. Peptides can enhance the natural production of growth hormone. Human growth hormone (HGH) levels naturally decline with age. Along with the many other effects of aging, a relative deficiency of growth hormone contributes to a decline in sexual desire and function. There have been many studies which document human growth hormones’ decline with aging, and the numerous consequences of that decline. 32

Natural Nutmeg - June 2020

Low HGH levels also inhibit the pleasure associated with sexual activity, making it more problematic to achieve orgasm, and causing the resulting physical satisfaction to be lackluster. In females, HGH promotes lubrication, making the vagina ready for sex. The enhanced blood flow promoted by healthy growth hormone levels makes the clitoris and the vagina significantly more sensitive, increasing the pleasure and increasing the likelihood of satisfaction. In men, growth hormone deficiency will contribute to erectile dysfunction. Two peptides commonly used to enhance the natural production of growth hormone are tesamorelin, and the combination peptide called CJC/Ipamorelin. Tesamorelin is one of the most studied and well documented peptides in terms of its effectiveness. It is FDA approved for a medical indication of “lipodystrophy,” characterized by abnormal fat accumulation. For everyone else, Tesamorelin can be obtained from a compounding pharmacy for its many benefits. A Harvard study showed that along with its ability to enhance the loss of body fat and increase muscle mass in response to diet and exercise, it was shown to reduce “visceral fat,” the fat around the abdominal organs which increases the risk of heart disease. It also enhanced cognitive ability in study subjects over 60 years of age. Melatonin is a peptide which has as its primary action an enhancement of the tanning of the skin by its ability to promote the production of the hormone melanin which is responsible for pigmentation of the skin. Melatonin has been shown to have libido

enhancing effects. Having these effects, it has been used along with a growth hormone enhancing peptide, which enhances weight loss while at the same time having an additional cosmetic and anti-aging effect. These peptides are generally used 5-6 days per week administered in the evening as growth hormone is naturally released each evening while we sleep. The actress Suzanne Somers has had a long career as an author, writing a number of books promoting the use of natural treatments for their Anti-Aging benefits. Now she is on a book tour to promote her new book called, “A New Way To Age.” In this new book, she touts the use of the peptide PT-141 by her husband and herself, contributing to their maintaining an active sex life well into their seventies. Many peptides have been shown to be safe and effective, helping many different health concerns as well as optimizing function. New ones are being studied and developed all the time, and it appears that the recognition and acceptance of peptides for better health is growing and expected to be recommended more widely in the years to come. Dr. Henry Sobo, MD has a Medical practice in Stamford, CT. He is a member of the American Academy of AntiAging Medicine and The International Peptide Society. Don’t Surrender to Menopause

By Tatiana Fleischman, MD

W

e’ve all heard the word menopause. If you are a woman, you’ve either been through menopause or are going to at some point. And yet, how much do we really know about it? Despite my background as a physician, I'm embarrassed to admit I failed to recognize my own menopausal symptoms. First, I lost my sleep, the most I could get was 3 hours. I felt tired all the time. I stopped exercising because I didn't have energy and motivation. I gained weight. It was hard to make it through the day, even making dinner was an effort. I blamed it all on my demanding job and busy life. I grew irritable. One day I snapped at my mom over nothing on her birthday! Immediately I felt terrible but surprisingly she didn’t get upset. “You know,” she said, “I felt exactly like you when I started going through my menopause.” And that’s when it struck me - those were all the symptoms of menopause! I was only 46 and although menopausal symptoms often occur in women at this age, I wasn't expecting them to happen to me. I wasn’t the only one. Millions of women dismiss the symptoms or explain them away by working too hard, answering family demands or dealing with whatever else life might throw at them. Symptoms of Menopause You may have heard that you are considered in menopause when you haven’t had your period for at least a year. While this is true, the symptoms typically arrive 5-10 years before the periods stop. This is called perimenopause. Some symptoms are well known: hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings. But there are many more symptoms that are far less known. They are often misinterpreted and ignored by many women and even doctors. So, what are those symptoms? Less Known Menopause Symptoms • Low energy • Poor sleep • Depression, anxiety • Weight gain

• Memory problems • Brain fog • Muscle and joint pains • Thinning hair, crepey skin • Vaginal dryness • Low sex drive And as if feeling moody, tired, out of shape and out of control weren’t bad enough, menopause carries serious health risks, because menopause means losing key hormones that protect us from many diseases. Potential Health Risks Due to Menopause When your hormones start disappearing in menopause you lose much more than a normal life. You lose protection against many diseases of aging: 1. Osteoporosis after menopause needs no introduction. It weakens your bones making them fragile. Breaking a hip makes you 3 times more likely to die within a year! And if you survive, there is a good chance you’ll end up in a nursing home. 2. Cardiovascular disease develops much faster after menopause because your heart and blood vessels are no longer protected by estrogen. This means many more heart attacks and strokes. 3. Alzheimer's disease and dementia have been linked to hormone deficiency brought by menopause. When hormones are restored, the risk of these diseases drops dramatically. Our body needs hormones to stay healthy and function. However, once we stop making hormones, they won’t come back on their own. The only way to restore hormones after the production shutdown is to put them back into your body through hormone replacement therapy. Hormone Replacement Therapy Hormone replacement therapy is the only effective treatment available to reduce both the menopause symptoms and the risk of diseases. It’s truly a shame that over the last 20 years, so many women have been scared away from this potentially life-saving therapy by misinformation and media hype. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

The worry about the risk of breast cancer is due to a large study called Women’s Health Initiative published in 2002. Although the study did show slightly elevated rates of breast cancer, it only looked at women who took artificial hormones. Those hormones are made from chemicals or horse urine. Bioidentical hormones, on the other hand, have not been shown by any research to cause cancer. They are made from plants such as soybeans and yams and exactly match the hormones your body makes. They don’t carry the risks synthetic hormones do.

heart disease and dementia. It improves bladder control, slows down osteoporosis and increases longevity.

In my practice, I only use natural bioidentical hormones and never use synthetics. Numerous research studies have shown that women who are supplementing their hormones live longer, happier and much healthier lives. The benefits of replenishing your hormones are tremendous and can show quickly after you start the therapy. Hot flashes disappear within days. Brain fog is usually gone within a couple of weeks. Sleep gets better and your energy surges. Hormone therapy not only helps with the symptoms, it also cuts the risk of

think twice about getting help right away. You are likely to live over a third of your life after menopause. What would you like those years to be like?

There are many alternative treatments to help you go through menopause such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acupuncture, yoga, and herbal supplements. These treatments can make you feel better and reduce some of your symptoms but they cannot bring your hormones back. Therefore, they won’t protect you from osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia.

Fulfilling relationships, career, travel, hobbies, healthy, happy and vibrant life all are possible and within reach. You can also build good defenses against osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and many other “old age” diseases. You can stay fit, younger looking, full of energy and mentally sharp, but only if you choose to restore your hormones and don’t surrender to menopause.

Don’t Face Your Menopause Alone

Yes, restoring hormones is key to this transformation. Not antidepressants, fad diets or bags of sleeping and other pills. If you want your happy life back, hormone optimization is the way to go.

I’ve lost count of the women who sit in my office and tearfully tell me how their menopause symptoms are wrecking their relationships, careers and quality of life. Some are on the verge of quitting their jobs. Others are afraid their marriage is starting to crumble. All because of the symptoms that in reality are readily treatable. You shouldn’t wait for your life to get out of control before seeking help. If you have any of the symptoms we’ve talked about or even if you are not sure, don’t

The Changing Landscape of Pregnancy During a Pandemic

By Vicki Kobliner, MS, RDN, CD-N

P

regnancy is a time of hope and excitement as well as increased concern for what the future will bring for your growing family. Pregnancy during a pandemic can add to the fear that any parent-to-be may feel. The areas of concern are three-fold: What effects COVID-19 (SARS-CoV2) may have prenatally, how it will inform labor and delivery, and what effects it might have in the first years of life and beyond. Expectant mom’s need guidance to help them navigate the changing landscape of pregnancy during a pandemic. Arming yourself with knowledge and a plan of action can help you navigate this confusing time. What Can You Do Now to Protect Your Baby? We do not have a lot of information about pregnancy and birth outcomes related to COVID-19 as of yet. Studies are based on small population size, and only exist from women in their third trimester. While we do not know what, if any effects, in utero or early exposure to COVID-19 may have on a baby’s early and long-term development, new information is continually emerging and we can use the currently available data to guide our choices. Prenatally, protection and prevention are absolutely the first line of defense. Follow standard recommendations for social distancing, frequent hand washing, thorough surface cleaning, and face covering. Discuss with your provider their policies regarding in person vs. telehealth prenatal visits. Basic health measures such as high-quality nutrition, physical activity, restful sleep and stress reduction become even more important, even while quarantine conditions add an additional layer of challenge to achieving these goals.

Consider pregnancy safe immune support such as vitamin C and D, zinc and echinacea as appropriate, but be careful with any herbs such as licorice and andrographis, which are being touted as protection against SARS-CoV2, but they are unsafe during pregnancy. Other compounds such as quercetin and melatonin, which may have anti-COVOD-19 activity, are lacking in safety data regarding pregnancy.

There is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted via breast milk, however, COVID-19 positive mothers must use precautions such as wearing a mask while nursing, washing hands before and after touching the baby, and disinfecting all surfaces. In addition, if a mom is expressing her breast milk for any reason, including being too ill to nurse, all equipment must be carefully and thoroughly cleaned.

Minimize Risk to Mom and Newborn

The First Year and Beyond

Once baby is ready to enter the world, the goal is to minimize risk to mom and newborn. There is a higher risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight in babies born to infected mothers but thankfully, vertical transmission (from mom to baby in utero) of COVID-19 appears unlikely. In only rare cases has a baby been born with positive antibodies (a sign of prior exposure) to the disease. Horizontal transmission, likely due to exposure to respiratory droplets after birth has occurred, but in most cases, the infants have recovered well, and appear less seriously affected than adults.

Preterm delivery, C-section birth, antibiotic use, as well as maternal fever, infection and use of acetaminophen during pregnancy have been associated with an increased risk for autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, developmental delay and depression in children. We suspect this is linked to disruption of the infant microbiome and alteration of innate immune function. Research is clear that healthy balanced gut flora exerts powerful effects on not only digestion, but immune and neurologic function as well. Alterations in these pathways are correlated with a variety of developmental and mental health challenges in children and adults.

Because of the fear of both vertical and horizontal transmission, as well as respiratory concerns for mom, C-section deliveries and separation of mom and baby after birth were regularly initiated in early cases, but with more information these guidelines have changed. For COVID-19 infected mothers, the World Health Organization (WHO) currently does not recommend routine C-section, unless deemed necessary for other reasons. The CDC does not support routinely isolating a newborn from its mother and WHO maintains the importance of room-sharing, skin to skin contact and breastfeeding to provide the baby with optimal immune support.

Having a baby should be a time of joy and hope. We cannot and should not live in fear of negative outcomes. What we can do is be aware, and proactive in supporting normal immune and gut health in our newborns, and be especially mindful of those who have been exposed to SARSCoV2. Being proactive includes breastfeeding for 6 months or longer whenever possible. Breast milk provides important immune modulating compounds as well as molecules called Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs) that are used specifically by the gut flora to grow and thrive. ics, omega 3 fatty acids, and zinc can be used to enhance immune function. While these nutrients are safe for both breastfeeding moms and babies, appropriate dosing is essential. Parents should watch carefully for signs of digestive and immune dysfunction such as colic, reflux, poor sleep, eczema and ear infections. What is Causing the Increase in Preterm Birth? By Nicole Kerr, ND, LAc

E

very year, an estimated 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), and this number is rising, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO ranked USA 6th for greatest number of preterm births (PTB) in 2010, and in 2017 March of Dimes graded our nation as a “C” on their premature birth report card. In 2018, the USA had 1 in 10 babies as preterm births.

body, the microbiome is where it’s at. All humans have unique, though similar, microbiomes throughout the body, with the gut microbiome being the most well researched. Disruption and variations to these microbiomes have shown to influence health on many levels including preterm birth rates.

Intrauterine infection and inflammation may account for up to 40% of PTB, but in many instances, the cause might be subclinical and difficult to detect. Preterm birth known risk factors include multiple pregnancies, smoking and substance abuse, history of PTB, maternal emotional stress during pregnancy, and limited prenatal and antenatal care. Preventing PTB starts with preconception care and healthy pregnancy practices.

The maternal reproductive microbiome, includes the vaginal microbiome (VBM), cervicovaginal, endometrial, and uterine microbiome; although oral and gut microbiomes also impact reproductive and pregnancy health. Changes to reproductive microbiomes greatly influence conception and pregnancy outcomes. Female reproductive microbiomes change throughout a lifetime and even between trimesters in pregnancy, shifting to less diversity with a predominance of Lactobacillus species, the most common probiotic or “friendly” bacteria, in late pregnancy.

Preterm birth complications are the leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age, responsible for ~1 million deaths per year worldwide, and can lead to lifelong developmental and physical disabilities. New information on PTB and the female reproductive microbiome’s potential impact on PTB rates is worth a much closer look.

A healthy VBM includes predominantly Lactobacillus species (90-95%), Atopobium, Dialister, Gardnerella, Megasphaera, Prevotella, Peptoniphilus, and Leptotrichia. Endometrial microbiome of <90% Lactobacillus species and >10% other bacteria is associated with reduced implantation as well as reduced rates of pregnancy, ongoing pregnancy and live births.

Maternal Reproductive Microbiome

VBM variations in Lactobacillus species among women of different races and ethnicity follow PTB trends of those groups too. Lactobacillus crispatus is significantly higher among white non-

When figuring out how we as humans interact with the “friendly” bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other organisms in our

Hispanic women than non-Hispanic black and Hispanic women. Non-Hispanic black and Hispanic women have significantly higher rates of diversity group bacteria. It was concluded that high vaginal diversity is associated with an increased risk of PTB and bacterial vaginosis. This follows the PTB trend, where PTB in non-Hispanic black women is higher compared to that of non-Hispanic white women. Dysbiosis and Preterm Birth Dysbiosis is the disruption of normal microbiome organisms. Vaginal microbiome can become imbalanced through exogenous/environmental factors such as drug use, behavioral practices, sexual activities, diet, hygiene practices, and stress; and endogenous/host factors including genetic background, age, hormonal status, vaginal pH, ethnicity, and immune system status. Conception and pregnancy are dependent on balanced microbiomes in the mother’s body. VBM dysbiosis has been associated with decreased pregnancy rates in IVF patients, especially when Gardnerella vaginalis and Atopobium vaginae are elevated. Notice both of these bacteria are listed as healthy VBM, but quantity of microbes matters. The 2019 Journal of Gynecology Obstetrics and Human Reproduction stated, “recent meta-analysis concluded that women with an abnormal vaginal microbiota are roughly 1.4 times less likely to have a successful early pregnancy development after IVF treatment when compared to women with normal microbiota.” www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Recurrent miscarriage patients with elevated peripheral NK cells have more Gardnerella vaginalis and gram-negative anaerobes, demonstrating VBM association with changes in immune parameters and miscarriage. Bacterial vaginosis is found in 15-23% of pregnant women, half of whom are asymptomatic, with abnormal VBM in early pregnancy associated with a 5-fold increase in late miscarriage and early PTB. Short cervix in the second trimester is a risk factor for PTB and studies show a significant association with Lactobacillus iners being dominant at 16 weeks gestation with both a short cervix and PTB. When Lactobacillus crispatus is dominant, it is highly predictive of term birth. Addressing VBM changes and other reproductive pathogenic infections is vital for preconception care and prevention of PTB. Maternal Reproductive Microbiome Treatment for PTB Prevention 1. Preconception. Both partners need a full assessment of current and past infections, immune function status, stress levels, exercise regimen, contraception choices, optimal weight balance and dietary practices, oral hygiene, past antibiotic use and avoidance, and proper promotion of Lactobacillus species to fully understand the potential occurrence for PTB. 2. Pre and probiotic supplementation benefits. Maternal: • Reduction of preterm birth, gestational diabetes, gestational weight gain, and preeclampsia • Prevention of group B streptococcus colonization

• Reduction in antibiotic resistance • Development of healthy immune system with proper maternal priming

3. Probiotics. Cochrane meta-analysis showed 81% reduction in genital infections with oral probiotics alone. Probiotics have been proven to compete with and inhibit pathogen growth, thereby balancing the inflammatory cascade commonly observed in PTB. Lactobacillus crispatus and Bifidobacterium species are applied as a vaginal paste to improve VBM. Probiotic gargles can help with oral dysbiosis and allow for healthy microbiome repopulation. 4. Dietary. Dietary support is essential for VBM health. Studies show after one month on a standard American diet, a 71% increase in endotoxin activity. Endotoxins are an integral component of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria; E. coli, chlamydia and gonorrhea are all gram-negative bacteria. A sedentary lifestyle results in higher levels of endotoxins too, so get the body moving and eat a whole foods diet. 5. Prebiotics. Food for the friendly probiotics and fiber are necessary in growing a healthy microbiome. Inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides, lactulose, galacto-oligosaccharides, psyllium, and resistant starch can all help VBM. Apple cider vinegar and pink salt are beneficial in electrolyte status and regulating pH. Lower vaginal pH improves Lactobacillus growth and diminishes Gardnenella and harmful bacteria overgrowth. Fermented foods are helpful in reasonable amounts, don’t overdo them. Avoidance of sugar, yeast, alcohol, and caffeine will improve the overall status of the microbiome. 6. Essential oil. Tea tree, sandalwood, or thyme oils are used in cervicovaginal washes for their antimicrobial actions. Prior to pregnancy thyme essential oil with salt can be used as a gargle for oral health. See a trained professional for preparation and application instructions of essential oils. 7. Supplements. CoQ10 can be used a swish and swallow during pregnancy for mouth and gum health. Vitamin C boosts immune function for better maintenance of a healthy microbiome. Oral berberine modulates the gut microbiome through enriching short chain fatty acid producing bacteria and reducing microbial diversity. Progesterone helps with embryo implantation and maintaining pregnancy in the first trimester and it is now known to regulate Bifidobacterium. Therefore, if progesterone is deficient, PTB may increase due to the low levels of Bifidobacterium.

When seeking treatment, know not all women’s health or reproductive healthcare professionals consider the microbiome when evaluating a couple for preconception care, infertility, or recurrent miscarriages. Seek the guidance of a health professional with the knowledge to best support you.

With millions of preterm births each year and all the complications and costs that accompany PTB; a thorough health history of both partners, balancing all microbiomes, and eradication of pathogenic infections should be a top priority before trying to become pregnant. Correcting imbalances before conception can greatly improve the pregnancy experience and overall health of the fetus, allowing higher likelihood of full term birth. Supporting Your Immune System During a Pandemic By Veena Verma-Dzik, ND, FIAMA

W

ith the state of uncertainty that still lingers in the air surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic, it is a good time to have a better handle on our health. In absence of a treatment, it is wise to make use of alternative methods to help control acquiring the infection and its severity. It is further supported by the Harvard School of Public Health to depend on good quality supplements to help reduce the risk of infection. Here are a few of the supplements that are supported by peer-reviewed studies to be helpful for supporting the immune system. Vitamin D3 Vitamin D3 deficiency is common in many health conditions, including chronic illnesses, many types of cancer, autoimmune diseases, HIV, coagulopathy, advanced age and morbidity. In fact, one study showed that 84% of ICU patients with Covid-19 had insufficient vitamin D levels. Vitamin D helps turn on infection fighting cells, such as monocytes macro-

phages and dendritic cells, via vitamin D receptors (VDR) located on the cells. Vitamin D also induces antimicrobial peptides, defensins and cathelicidins, which decrease the rate of viral replication, increase anti-inflammatory cytokines, and reduce concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines, the same that have been associated with injuring the ringing of the lungs.

to be effective against staph infections, E. Coli, Bacillus, Candida, and Gram negative bacteria, such as H.pylori. It has shown to have antiviral properties against influenza, pneumovirus, EBV, HSV and HIV. When it comes to viral infections, it binds to the viral envelope, causing it to disintegrate, inhibits late stage viral maturation, and prevents binding of the virus to the host cell.

Vitamin C

Quercetin

As you know, clinical trials are being conducted on the use of IV vitamin C for supportive care for Covid-19 patients, where vitamin C is being shown to decrease the duration of stay in ICU and the need for mechanical ventilation. There are over 60,000 studies on Vitamin C in PubMed, and its antiviral actions were actually discovered more than 80 years ago when scientists were researching poliomyelits.

Quercetin is a type of polyphenol known to have antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects. The International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents suggests that Quercetin has anti-coronavirus effects by its ability to modulate unfolded protein response, which is a pathway that plays a role in the viral life cycle.

Zinc Zinc has been shown to decrease the rate of acute respiratory infections, shorten the duration of flu-like symptoms and improve recovery time. Its antivi- ral effects are due to its ability to inhibit RNA-dependent RNA polymerases and other proteins that are essential for viral replication. Monolaurin

Monolaurin is derived from Lauric acid, which is found in coconut oil. It has a broad spectrum of activity where studies have shown monolaurin

Glutathione People who suffer from pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, immune disorders, neurodegenerative disorders, and chronic age-related diseases tend to have low levels of glutathione. There is extensive literature on the role of glutathione in immunity. It maintains the active states of vitamins C and E within cells. Its role in the host defense against intracellular pathogens is essential, where it is required to maintain an adequate interferon-gamma production by dendritic cells. Supplementing with glutathione alone is not enough to replenish deficiencies. Adding n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and alpha- lipoic acid will help improve levels of glutathione. This is just a handful of supplements that are supported by studies to be benefi-

cial to the immune system and providing support during inflammatory responses to infections. There are many herbs that are being studied and researched in clinical trials for their role and potential benefits for being used in supportive care and treatments. Consuming a diet that is nutrient-rich and high in antioxidants will help avoid becoming deficient in nutrients that are required for the immune system to function optimally. Keep in mind, during this stressful time we must also focus on our mental and spiritual well-being, for these are vital for the immune system. Try your best to get adequate amounts of sleep. Disruptive sleep is associated with increased sympathetic nervous system activity, a disruption in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and pro-inflammatory responses; leading to an inability to fight infection, chronic illnesses, inflammation, mood disorders, and cognitive, memory and performance deficits. Getting regular exercise is shown to increase immune surveillance, increase the function of natural killer cells and CD8 T cells. Finally, address any anxiety and depression that you may be experiencing. New studies are claiming that over 70,000 people will die from the use of drugs, alcohol and suicide due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In spite of being quarantined many of us are readily available to help you in the comfort of your home and provide you with the support you need to get through this. Grieving vs Mourning in the Time of COVID-19 By James W. Osborne, MS, LPC, BCPC

G

rief is the emotional response to the loss of someone or thing that is important to you. Mourning is the process of acclimating to a life without that special someone or something. COVID-19 or the Coronavirus has disrupted our normal processes and rituals.

other protective clothing. It was not possible to have human skin to skin contact – no holding, kissing – difficulties being understood while speaking through masks. The two of us that were allowed to visit my friend consider ourselves fortunate in that at least we were able to be present.

In the March 2020 issue of Natural Nutmeg, I wrote an article on “The Fragility of Life”. That article was based on my experiences with two people who remain very important to me. One of them was my friend of 40 years, who unfortunately died at the end of March. Though his death was not attributed to COVID-19, he did die in the time of the pandemic. What follows is what I and many friends have experienced and are living through while suffering the loss of a loved one during this time. Normal rituals of closure, gatherings, saying goodbyes and gaining strength from each other were altered. We had to learn to be present with each other without being physically present with each other.

Many residents of the facility had no contacts other than staff, whom I must say were extremely caring. Following his death, he was transported to a funeral home. We were informed that only two funerals could be held in a day and only one at a time. No more than 10 people could be in the funeral parlor at a time. The viewing would be limited to two hours. No services were available at the church and only one person could be present graveside along with the funeral director and a priest. This is the new reality. The question now becomes how one processes grieving without the normal rituals and human contact.

My friend’s story is like so many others during this time period. Following several hospitalizations, he entered a facility for palliative care in the greater New York City area. Once the virus began to spread in NYC, visitation to nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities became extremely limited. In my friend’s case, the only visitors allowed were visitors for hospice patients. Only one visitor was allowed at a time and for a period of an hour. Visitors wore facemasks, gloves and eventually

Rituals serve as a mechanism to bring a sense of control, which is missing in loss. In grief, rituals are an important part of the healing process. They provide order to the chaos of grief, speaking to our hearts and emotions with a focus on the present. Most of our rituals involve gatherings of loved ones to view the deceased, support each other in grief, share food and stories and engage in human contact – holding hands, hugging and embracing. All of these are currently unavailable in the time of COVID-19. We remain isolated and untouchable. So, what can we do to be present without being physically present?

First, we can reach out to the grieving with a phone call, video chat, with a card, email or on messenger. We can help by genuinely acknowledging the loss and the pain, listening without judgment or trying to make everything better. Speaking about the pain will actually make it possible for the pain to be released. We can say, “I have been thinking about you and I know this must be difficult for you. I care about you.” There are some basic Do’s and Don’ts of support. Do listen attentively. Don’t be afraid of tears or strong emotion. Don’t change the subject and make it about you by telling your story of loss or offer easy answers. Please do not say, “I know what you are going through”, even if you have lived a similar experience. If they want to hear your story or experience let them ask. Your best response is, “Everyone’s pain is different and their own. I just know it hurts a great deal”. Just listen without judgement or criticism and let them feel what they are feeling in the moment. Validate the enormity of the loss and use the name of the deceased. Give permission for them to do what feels right for themselves in the moment. Don’t give advice, unless you are asked for it and don’t push them into things that you think would be good for them. Offer specific practical help like childcare, groceries, yardwork, meals or cleaning. Don’t avoid the person or wait for them to reach out to you. Do reach out over the months and years, especially on holidays and anniversaries. Just because they seem OK does not mean that they no longer need your support.

In my experience it takes a good three years for someone to process the loss of a loved one. Kubler Ross’ five stages of grief are simply a model of what people may go through. Everyone’s grief is a personal journey. It is not linear and completed on a straight timeline. Each season brings its own challenges and raw memories, especially in the first year following the loss. Each holiday, anniversary, birthday, family gathering, or normally shared event must be lived through without the loved one. These are all reminders of the depth of how things have forever changed. The second year is still raw, but there has been the experience of having lived through the experiences without the loved one and we did not die. The third year becomes more manageable. Remember that grief can be triggered at any moment by very ordinary circumstances and events. Grief is a response to loss, a trauma. Life is never quite the same again. The key to surviving and healing in this time of COVID-19 is human connectedness. Physical human touch is not a viable option at this time. What is currently available is reaching out emotionally with our hearts, thoughts and genuine caring. We can act supportively expressing our love and acting on that love by acknowledging the painfulness of the situation with reassurances that we will do what we can to remember and honor the deceased and those left to grieve and mourn. There is a quote by Patricia Campbell Carlson, which I find especially helpful: “Grief and Gratitude are kindred souls, each pointing to the beauty of what is transient and given to us by Grace.” James W. Where Are Your Angels in This Challenging Time? By Agnes Daddona, MS

W

here are God and Angels during this challenging time? Aren't Angels supposed to be helping humanity, especially now? Many of my clients recently asked me, "Agnes, is this year going to be better than 2019?" I remember seeing the vision in November of last year, given to me by Angels, of a huge energy shift approaching our planet. I started telling my clients that the year 2020 will be an evolution for humanity. I said,“Well, it is like giving birth to a child, there is the struggle, but the outcome is a new life!”As a bonus, we get an entire upgrade. Our DNA is being transmuted as we speak so we can graduate to the next level and become more intuitive, angelic, and start experiencing higher levels of consciousness as well as enhanced creativity and manifestation powers. I mentioned that the year 2020 would humble us and take us to our knees but also improve us and ultimately make us better. It is just designed this way. Nothing that is happening right now is happening for no reason. It has to be that dramatic; otherwise, we would never change. Higher frequencies of light are raining on us and shifting us into more divine beings. So, all in all, Angels are still here. They are talking about the birthing of a new earth. We are all going not only through a significant transformation but transmutation. On a human level, we might feel uncomfortable as we are creatures of habit. We want our safety and comfort, like wearing our old slippers. Now we have to put on new sophisticated shoes and we need to learn how to walk in them. On a spiritual level, we get an extraordinary opportunity to grow. We are invited to bless and release the old traumas, painful emotions, and behavioral patterns. We gain a chance to reset and start new. Angels talk about cleansing not only baggage from this lifetime but past lives as well. What do we do in between releasing the old earth and birthing the new earth? How do we survive? Simple little things: 1. On the soul level: Meditations to connect with Angels, visualizations of what you would like your new reality to be, daydreaming of who you would like to become in the process of this transformation. 2. On the mind level: Being present and connect more with yourself and others and not buying into a story that we are separated. We are all one and we are coming together more strongly than ever. Surrounding yourself with beautiful things 44

like flowers and listening to beautiful music. Watching funny movies and reading uplifting books. Starting a gratitude journal. You have so many things to be grateful for...the sun, the rain, spring, birds singing, a cup of coffee in the morning, a neighbor's smile. 3. On the physical level: Connecting to nature, taking walks, doing a few yoga poses, sleeping and eating well, drinking lots of water. Things which are meant to "keep us in our bodies" so we can notice and experience fully the higher level of consciousness, which is swiping the planet right now. Our mind is trying to keep us in the fear. We begin to doubt in a better future as everything is breaking around us. Our soul is keeping the energy of safety. Our ego is trying to tell us that we are separated and alone. Our soul is reminding us that we are assisted, helped now more than ever before. Our heart is in pain and it is hard to trust that we will ever feel good again. Our Spirit is aligning us with Angelic help and puts on us a warm security blanket made out of light. We can silence our mind and heart and listen to our soul. The entire world was stopped to do just that. The planet is transmuting from the lowest vibration: frequency of fear to the highest frequency of love. We are on the journey to discover that we are light beings, like Angels, created to love and be loved, and the purpose of our existence is to grow and learn about our power to create, and this time around, create from love and light. So, please take a moment to try to connect to your Angels and ask for help. Please ask for your Angel's assistance with spring in your heart. Not a prayer of "God help me" or "God save me". Speak from your heart and be yourself. Angels are happy to help you with everything, small or big, so please use their help and make sure you thank them. Angels love gratitude! Submitted by Agnes Daddona, MS of Intuitive Counseling – Holistic Spa. If you would like to find out more about how to connect with your personal Angels and learn how to create a new beautiful life with them, please contact me. I would love to assist you! Immune Support for Lyme Disease

By Jaquel Patterson, ND

T

he world has changed significantly over the past couple of months. We are in an unprecedented time and now more than ever many of our patients are asking what is best to support their physical and overall well-being during this time. Individuals with chronic disease conditions and weakened immune systems should be even more vigilant on maintaining their overall health. Many of our patients with chronic Lyme disease have to be mindful of the spread of the infection throughout the body and its potential impact. Lyme Disease Symptoms You may be wondering several questions. What is chronic Lyme disease or can Lyme disease affect immune function? Most individuals who are first diagnosed with Lyme disease have seen over 5 doctors before being diagnosed, meaning they are suffering in pain for many months to years. Some of the common symptoms include joint pain, neurological symptoms, lowgrade fever, headaches, rashes, neck stiffness, brain fog, enlarged lymph nodes and more. Classic signs are a circular rash (i.e. bull’s eye), though the majority of patients’ do not present with this symptom. Common locations for them to attach to are warmer parts of the body like groin area, armpits and scalp of hair.

Lyme Disease Transmission Lyme disease numbers increase annually with about 3000 cases in CT alone; with estimates by CDC that indicate the numbers are close to 10 times more than reported. With the current pandemic, a lot of us are being more active in nature which is a positive thing. However, now, more than other times in the year, is a common time for individuals to obtain a tick-borne infection. The most common peak times are between June through August, though cases are found throughout the year. Lyme disease is transmitted by members of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex; most ticks transmit other tick-borne infections such as Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma. It is common in practice for me to treat patients with more than one tick-borne infection type. The presentation of symptoms vary based on the tick that you were infected by. For this reason, diagnosis is tricky, and per CDC is a clinical decision based on labwork and clinical symptoms. Supporting Immune Function Due to the fact that it may take time to get proper care for Lyme disease, many suffer from the symptoms of it for some time without relief. It can cause an effect on the overall immune system due to the balance of immune mediators in your system. For this reason, there are some key areas you need to look at to support immune function while having a diagnosis of Lyme.

1. Vitamin D: helps to modulate immune responses. Deficiencies in Vitamin D have been connected to increasing risk of autoimmunity and susceptibility to infection and is why I often recommend to my patients with Lyme disease. 2. Zinc: Deficiencies in zinc provides greater susceptibility to a variety of pathogens. It helps mediate white blood cells and natural killer cells. It supports DNA replication, cell division, RNA transcription and cell activation. It also supports membranes and functions as an antioxidant. 3. Andrographis: has a particular support for the lungs, immune function and is a key herb used for Lyme disease. Andrographis has shown to be effective against a range of parasitical organisms. It has an anti-spirochetal effect, helps with autoimmunity, and protects the body from damage that is caused by spirochetes. It provides some symptomatic relief of symptoms of Lyme disease and contains anti-inflammatory properties. It has the ability to cross the blood brain barrier which may directly support those whose Lyme disease has caused neurological issues. 4. Vitamin A: increases the integrity of the mucus barrier of the body, e.g. skin and gut. It is known as the “antiinflammation” vitamin. It helps with immune tolerance and maintains homeostasis in the system. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

45

5. Elderberry Syrup: is full of antioxidants and functions as an anti-viral. It has been shown to shorten the duration of a cold/flu and reduce the symptoms connected with it. 6. Vitamin C: has long been known to support the immune function and for its antixodidant support. A recent study during COVID has shown its use in reducing the time in hospital for those infected, though not confirmed to prevent you from contracting the virus. 7. Astragalus: is an herb that is often used for chronic, long-term immune support and is also an adaptogen. This herb has often been recommended in Lyme protocols for its benefits for both the disease and immune function. Another therapy we particularly use in the office for the immune system is low dose immunotherapy (LDI). It helps the immune system to rebalance itself and decreases inflammation related to specific infections. Another component to look for support with Lyme patients as part of their immune function is lifestyle management,

i.e. diet, exercise and sleep. Many of my patients with Lyme disease have disruption in their sleep patterns and quality of sleep. For some, we look at recommending melatonin which is additionally beneficial for its immune supporting properties. Artemesia annua, also known as wormwood, has shown to be anti-parasitic and anti-malarial. It also has very strong anti-viral properties and is helpful for common tick-borne co-infections like Babesia. Japanese knotweed has shown to exhibit potent activity against dominant persistent forms of Lyme disease. It is often seen in combination with other herbal protocols. As a reminder, particularly as we go into the summer months, prevention is key. Here are some quick tips to consider: • Wear long pants, sleeves and socks when going outside in nature, e.g. hiking.

It is important to stay safe and healthy during this time. Immune support coupled with an herbal protocol specific to Lyme will help with overall outcomes and amelioration of symptoms. Dr. Jaquel Patterson is a nationally and internationally recognized naturopathic physician, sought-after speaker, and best-selling author. She is the Medical Director and Owner of Fairfield Family Health in Fairfield, a multi-disciplinary integrative medical practice. She's the Immediate Past President of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. 203.254.9957. info@fairfieldfamilyhealth.com, www.fairfieldfamilyhealth.com. See ad on page 3.

• Make sure to do checks on body after being outside, particularly areas like scalp, groin and underarms. • Consider use of a natural bug spray. • Be mindful of pets to see if they are a carrier.

Leadership: Illuminating the Lives of Others through Integrity

By Sandi Coyne-Gilbert, MBA, DM MS Organizational Leadership Program Director, Goodwin University

I

with yourself, but with others in your organization or sphere as well. It’s being honest in recognizing that we are all human and that there are positives in seeking progress over perfection.

But what about smaller-scale, everyday influencers? It turns out that even those enthusiastically leading discussions, inspiring and empowering others, and being consistently authentic don’t see themselves as leading the way, either. This is a prime example of how a lack of self-awareness and self-assurance can cloud our own resilience and reality.

From Ponder to Practice

f you asked a random group of people, “What kind of leader are you?” most would likely tell you they don’t consider themselves leaders at all. People envision leaders as standing on a stage, behind a podium, or in front of large crowds, and many individuals don’t crave, or even care for, that kind of spotlight. A few even believe that what they have to say won’t generate any real difference.

For many, leadership means that people are observing us and that makes most of us squirm right where we’re standing. But if we root our ideals in integrity, and “speak the truth even if our voice shakes,” as American activist Maggie Kuhn advised, then the vulnerability and volume of our voice echoes in the ears of all willing to listen. Small, Selfless Acts Make a Positive, Profound Impact In his TED Talk in Toronto, author Drew Dudley provided his insight on everyday leadership. He noted that as a society we have made leadership into something bigger than ourselves, that we have turned it into a large-scale circumstance. He argued that leadership ought to lie more in every day, thoughtful moments; when you help someone change the direction of their life without expecting anything in return. He proposed that leadership is, in fact, reasonably-sized — so there is no doubt we all can rise to the opportunity. We’ve all experienced that life moment when someone said that one thoughtful thing or performed that one transformational action. Although it might have seemed small at the time, it made the biggest difference in your immediate world. Dudley suggests letting those people know what a difference they made, consequently altering our perceptions of how we can lead the way in our own lives. Introspection Leading the Way for Improvement Leadership is not meant for a select few, but for all. Leadership means you begin to recognize who you are, what you do well, and what you’re meant to share with the world. It means exposing your unique experiences through elements of your skills, attributes, and abilities. Paving the way takes patience, not only

By taking a look at your whole self — past, present, and pending — you paste together all of the pieces that build you into being. When you become cognizant of who you are at your core, self-actualization can alter your attitude and actions, causing you to grow graciously into the leader you were destined to become. How do you tap into what makes you tick? Below you will find a few pointers to finesse your fundamental self: • Ask for feedback from coworkers and friends • Be aware of your body language • Build a bucket list • Journal • Pay attention to your self-talk • Create a mission statement for your life • Take personality tests like The Enneagram or DISC models Looking into the layers of your unique self, you consequently become more comfortable in your own skin, and with that confidence, you become more apt to cheer on others to do the same. When you feel free to show up as you are, you are more likely to stand for something. If you don’t, as the old saying goes, “You will fall for anything.” Sandi Coyne-Gilbert is an accomplished leader with experience in both the education and nonprofit sectors. Coyne-Gilbert specializes in working with adult learners and is enthusiastic about instilling a passion for lifelong learning in her students. Her work with at-risk and marginalized groups provided her with unique insights into the power of education for people in transition. ccording to many energy healers and spiritual teachers, we are in a time of great transition. It may appear like there is total chaos on the planet – unstable weather patterns, corporate corruption and of course, the dreaded coronavirus amongst other diseases. However, many teachers are saying that this is a good and necessary thing for us all to evolve to a higher level of consciousness. It’s holding on and resisting change that creates drama and causes us turmoil and pain. But the letting go part…that’s easier said than done, right? One of my favorite quotes by Richard Bach that I repeat to myself whenever I’m in a situation of thinking I might lose something or someone - is this, “If you love something, set it free. If it comes back to you, it’s yours. If it doesn’t, it was never meant to be.” However, knowing what I know now, I would modify the statement, “it’s yours” to “it’s yours for now.” If you can fully step into the belief that all you have is what is in this present moment and begin to stop worrying about the future or replaying the past, then you will accept change gracefully and easily. I can think of a number of experiences in my life when I held on and resisted the flow and every time it caused me pain. From the death of my father to a broken engagement to leaving a job I loved, each time I would dwell on the “why” and evoke a deluge of pain and heartache. The “why” is not for us to know and we can spend lifetimes asking the questions without getting any concrete answers. Instead of focusing on trying to figure out why this happened to us, wouldn’t it be better to ask, “How can I learn or benefit from this situation?” What doors are opening as a result of this loss? What future might lie before me if I can walk away from what doesn’t serve me now? I can give many examples of how my life changed for the better after ending a relationship, but perhaps the best example is the opportunity that opened for me as a result of losing a job. Back in 2006 I had been working for a nutritional supplement company as their Director of Education and Sales. My job required me to present at conferences all over the country to audiences of 100 to 10,000. I absolutely loved it. I thrived on the energy of educating huge groups of people and potentially changing their lives. But as I said, things come to an end. The company was making changes and my job description was one of them. I ended up leaving, but it was like a divorce! Because of the strong emotions I had with this loss and my need to know “why”, I started pursuing a spiritual path. This eventually not only completely changed me as a person, it was the reason I started Natural Nutmeg. Because I was able to bend to the change, I was led to a much more fulfilling and impactful career. Now I’ve helped hundreds of thousands of people.

Change is fearful and learning to live without someone or something you love and have grown accustomed to is hard. But if you can sit with it, lean into it and let the feelings flow through you, then you begin to accept change and in time can see the amazing opportunities that it brings.
