PUBLISHER'SLETTER

S

pring is just around the corner and for many of us it’s a time to do some spring cleaning. Whenever I’m cleaning things out or rearranging things in my home, I like to keep in mind the ancient Chinese secrets of feng shui that have been used successfully for centuries to improve health, wealth and happiness. Feng shui is the act of purposefully arranging things around you to gain positive results, from furniture to art to your toothbrush, believe it or not!

According to feng shui, everything that happens in life can be categorized into nine life situations, which are spatially represented by areas in your living quarters. This is called a bagua and it includes: prosperity, fame & reputation, relationships & love, family, health, creativity & children, skills & knowledge, career, people & travel. The bagua is essentially layed over the frame of your house or dwelling with the main door of the house corresponding to a particular side of the bagua. This is how you determine what each corner or area of your home represents. Next, determine which of these areas you are unsatisfied in currently, vs. trying to tackle them all at once. Then, focus on those specific areas to shift the energy in your home and your life. You should also make a note of what is working to determine if unknowingly you have already properly placed things according to feng shui principles. Then using things such as color, shapes and textures to represent the five elements of fire, metal, water, wood and earth you will be able to balance your life and have your home work for you in generating positive energy. You must also set the intention that the elements work for you in a particular area. Just to give you some immediate insight into one of the areas, I’ll choose prosperity. If you are standing at your front door looking into the house, the prosperity section is the furthest left back corner of the home. Immediate action items for bringing prosperity into your life include: cleaning this section of the home well, removing broken items, using purple, green and gold colors, roundleaved plants. Things you would not want in your prosperity section: trash cans, toilets, dead or fake plants, fireplaces, dust or broken items. There are many informative books on feng shui, but my favorite is “Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life,” by Karen Rauch Carter. She takes what can be a very complicated subject and makes it easy to read, understand and apply. I hope this inspires you to do some spring cleaning! In Health and Happiness,

e live in a world where many demands are placed upon us. Allow hypnotherapy to help you deal with the stresses. I invite you to be shown how to use your mind to help not only reduce your stress, but to help you easily choose healthy foods and shed the weight for good. Our minds can help us finally quit smoking for good, to stay away from alcohol, drugs, and unhealthy foods. When our minds help us, willpower is not needed. We know how hard we have struggled, using willpower alone, without success. Hypnotherapy will show you an advanced way to get what you want from life, without the tough struggle will-power requires. Hypnotherapy is deep relaxation, allowing suggestions to your subconscious. You are in control. You'll enjoy a relaxing session and receive suggestions to get the results you want. You will access areas of the mind to bring about the changes you wish. Consider the possibilities. What do you want to change? You CAN accomplish your goals. Let your subconscious help you. Schedule a free phone consultation. We will discuss the issues that you wish to work on and the possible suggestions I may give you. r. Kristine DeMarco, licensed Chiropractor, owner and founder of Black Rock Holistic Health Center, has practiced holistic healing in Fairfield for 18 years. Her goal and mission has been to integrate chiropractic, acupuncture, nutrition, and physical therapy to provide patients with the highest degree of success in treating their acute and chronic pain. A lifelong student she has been teaching and learning along the way and in the past few years has been developing her passionate interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). “TCM is gentle and logical and it just makes sense to me,“ Dr. DeMarco says. “I’m able to offer my patients a combination of chiropractic and TCM to relieve their pain.” Dr. DeMarco uses acupuncture with electric stimulation for most of the nerve pain cases related to disc problems. She also uses dry cupping and wet cupping to resolve patient’s pain when needed. She has been practicing acupuncture for many years, but furthered her study by finishing a master of science in acupuncture and acquired new skills via two recent trips to China’s foremost TCM teaching hospital. During each trip, she spent time doing rotations in the hospital setting and in outpatient clinics. Dr. DeMarco is also certified in Cox Flexion Distraction, Graston Technique and Applied Kinesiology. Come visit our clinic in the heart of Black Rock and experience a life being pain free. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Qigong for Stress Reduction

W

hen I moved to New York in my twenties, I went to the now famous Open Center for many different classes. Two that really made an impression on me were Tai Chi and Qigong, both ancient Chinese systems of moving one’s energy through slow moving exercises, breath work, meditation, and mindfulness. For a few years I did Qigong regularly, but then slowly lost touch with my practice and forgot about it. Little did I know then that ten years later I would become a Chinese medical practitioner using acupuncture, herbs and energy work to heal my patients. Qigong resurfaced for me over the years but it wasn’t until I attended a 5-day course at Omega Institute with Master Robert Peng that I remembered the power these energy systems can have on the body and mind. Similar to Tai Chi, Qigong is a system of energy circulation that has been in use by millions of people for at least 2000 years. It incorporates slow moving exercises that help to move energy throughout the body along with breath work, meditation, and mindfulness. It is accessible to virtually everyone including the very young and very old with no prior experience needed to participate. What I have found over the years treating clients is that stress is the number one cause of illness and pain in our modern, fast paced life. The western medical practice of giving people medication to cover up symptoms is really just a band-aid. Stress reducing techniques can truly cure many of the manifestations of stress. Here are a few of its benefits: • Helps prevent disease and cancer by boosting the immune system • Lowers blood pressure • Reduces stress and anxiety • Reduces inflammation

Bernard Ilsley: The London Medium comes to The Ridgefield Playhouse on March 19th

B

ernard Ilsley is one of the most gifted psychics of this century. He works with spirit guides and he is able to consult each different spirit guide depending on which specialized subject he is working on for the individual consulting him. His first connection with his spirit guides occurred when he was eight years old. While painting an egg, he found he could tune out to tune in and his spirit guide painted an ancient Chinese pattern. He joined a development circle in his late teens run by his grandmother, herself a medium by the name of Edith Cole, well known in the media and often appearing in newspapers and on BBC radio. Bernard went on to sell out a theater and town hall tour at the age of twenty-three. He has also performed mantras and meditations on stage, teaching and lecturing on spiritual philosophy throughout the world. Ilsley appeared as himself in the hit comedy series, “High Spirits.” He has written, produced and published the book, Divinus Spritus & the CD, Prima Luce and has been featured in many publications, including the New York Times and the book Octopus. Part of Hearst Media Entertaining Conversation Series and Adam Broderick Salon & Spa Whole New You Series partially underwritten by Reliance Merchant Service. Visit Southwest Cafe (109 Danbury Road, Ridgefield) for dinner before the show and enjoy a complimentary margarita with your entree when you show your ticket. For tickets ($45-$90), call or visit the box office, 203.438.5795 or go online at ridgefieldplayhouse.org. Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

What is Core Energetics?

T

hrough physics, we know everything in the universe is made up of energy. Our bodies, along with our consciousness, are energy systems that hold an imprint of all our life experiences, both positive and negative. When our energetic flow is cut off by unresolved painful or traumatic events, we develop physical blocks in our bodies; in our muscles, our joints, our organs, our cells. How does this happen? During our formative years, our childhood selves strategize ways to defend against painful experiences in order to survive. This is done mostly unconsciously. In our body’s wisdom; our cells, organs, and muscles actually “listen in,” and our nervous system wires itself to adapt to our environment. Based on the types of energetic stimuli we experience, we formulate beliefs about our self-worth, our world, our caregivers, and life. These early-formed energy blocks limit our capacity to move, self-express, and to be in life fully. In Core Energetics, we work with the chronic tensions in the body where powerful emotions are blocked from being felt or expressed. Core also invites cognitive explorations to raise our awareness of the unconscious misconceptions we hold about ourselves and life. We learn to identify our patterns in interpersonal relationships created in those early years that keep us from being in true relationship with others. Core Energetics serves to restore the balance and flow of energy between body, mind, emotions, and spirit. By combining bodywork and traditional therapeutic techniques, Core supports you in achieving the life you wish to have, one in which your true, authentic self can meet and be with the challenges, and most importantly, the pleasures of being human. Submitted by Tristan Vetter. I offer hourly, one on one sessions and also facilitate group sessions and retreats.Call 860.944.9884 or email learning2heal@gmail.com.

Janice realized that not only was there a shortage of wig providers in her region, but also a need for completely private and personalized wig consultations in an office environment. Janice will even travel to the client’s home with a selection of wigs if they are medically unable to visit her office. “Selecting a wig is such a personal and often emotional experience”, stated Janice. “I spend a significant amount of time on wig education to ensure my client is pleased with her selection.” Today’s wig technology has resulted in the highest quality material. Wigs are lightweight, realistic to sight and touch, have highlights, dark roots, natural hair lines and part lines. Wigs are back in style, so everyone should feel comfortable to wear one. Whether you are in need of a wig for hair loss or for fashion, Janice is there to help.

asil Yoga Center is home to a burgeoning health community in Ridgefield, CT. Offering over 30 weekly classes in styles that range from vinyasa, yin, and restorative yoga, BYC classes are are filled with people of all ages and abilities that are looking for a laid-back environment that caters to those that don’t focus purely on the physical. “Our take on yoga is to primarily focus on breath centered seamless flow in vinyasa yoga, passive release with minimal transitions in yin yoga, and incorporating the highest end pure and organic essential oils in our restorative yoga”, says Basil Jones, founder and creator of BYC. “In the two decades that I've had 3 studios in this area, I've seen people go through massive life changes and transitions that have required them to reconsider what true wellness and optimal health means to them. Many people have come to us due to injuries from other styles of yoga or physical workouts that were focused too much on ideals like power and endurance, which doesn’t consider the emotional well-being of what each person may be coping with on any given day.” Several of BYC instructors are also psychotherapists, somatic energetics specialists, and hold other certifications in healing modalities that give BYC teachers additional professional skills to draw from. In addition to group classes, BYC has a second room for private or small group yoga sessions. With package deals that offer group classes and private sessions, students have an opportunity to work intimately with the yoga teacher of their choice, and at an hour that works for the student. We also offer a 200-hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training course that has a hybrid-flex system so that busy people in our area can fit teacher training into their lifestyles. Experience Himalayan Salt Therapy at Saltana Cave

H

imalayan salt therapy has been around since 1850, and was originated in Poland. Salt particles found in salt caves are known to be anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-viral. These elements help to alleviate symptoms related to chronic lung condition, sinus problems, allergies, and skin conditions. Himalayan salt therapy was discovered when a Polish doctor noticed that salt miners had the healthiest lungs, upon further research they discovered that the minerals in the salt caves were preventing lung conditions. Anna Pogoda, the owner of Saltana Cave, struggled with her young daughter suffering from asthma. Pogoda grew up in Poland and practiced salt therapy during her time there. On a trip to Poland, Pogoda decided to have her daughter try salt therapy. After a few sessions Pogoda saw improvements in her daughter’s health and everyday life. Amazed by the results she decided to open her own salt therapy cave in Ridgefield, Connecticut and has been in business for 6 years. Pogoda was inspired to open Saltana Cave by her daughter’s results, her personal connection to salt therapy while growing up in Poland, and the lack of salt therapy in the northeast. Saltana Cave offers services starting at $40 for 45-minute sessions, and session bundles are available. Sessions begin every hour, and appointments are required to prepare clients for their experience. The man-made cave is surrounded by 12,000 pounds of Himalayan salt and inside the cave guests are seated in comfortable chairs and blankets. Saltana Cave also offers a variety of classes, including ‘sound baths’ that include an hour and a half experience where vibrational energy is generated through Native American drum and crystal singing bowls guided by spiritual teachers. Classes inside the cave are intended to make clients more comfortable and provide relaxing stimulation. Salt therapy works best when you attend consecutive consistent sessions, results are seen at different times for different people. Pogoda recommends 10 consecutive sessions for clients to see the best results. Saltana Cave also sells salt lamps that clients can take home to further their holistic healing outside of the cave. Saltana Cave is located at 590 Danbury Road in Ridgefield and is open Tuesday through Sunday. For more information, visit saltanacave.com. See ad on page 14.

An Interview with Bernard Ilsley, “The London Medium” By Diane Hayden, PhD ernard Ilsley, “The London Medium,” is a third-generation psychic, and was born with the gift leaving most people who witness his ability astounded. He works with three spirit guides and is able to consult each different spirit guide depending on which specialized subject he is working on for the individual consulting him. His recordings now play on every continent in the world, they now run into the millions. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bernard to talk about his gift and upcoming show at the Ridgefield Playhouse on March 19, 2019.

B

DH: How did you discover you had this gift? BI: I was about 8 years old and it was a sunny summer day, I was outside painting an egg. I experienced that if I semi-closed my eyes the brush seemed to move on its own like a sewing machine needle. I painted this intricate Chinese pattern similar to what you see on Chinese cups but it was much better than what a typical 8-year-old could do. I think now looking back that one of my spirit guides was trying to channel through me to see if they could. This I believe was my first connection with my spirit guides. I decided to go to a psychic development circle that my grandmother ran at our home, later I went to psychic fairs with her, these were similar to the big Life Expo meetings of today. On one occasion, there was a young lady that came to see my grandmother. I discovered later she was Maureen Plant, who was married to Robert Plant. They were having some unusual happenings at her house so I was asked to investigate. I later started doing development circles there for number of years. I went onto record a meditation CD in their barn. At age 20 I made the decision to go professional and at age 23 I did my first UK tour. DH: What is one of your favorite memories as a medium? BI: The happiest times are when you make profound accurate connections. I met

a woman who lost her sister in the Sandy Hook shootings. She came to see me and said her parents were finding it difficult to accept her sisters death. They then came to see me and I was able to talk about things that only they knew about that had happened in their daughter’s life. Things like that make you feel so happy that you can use the gift to do such good and help bring at least some peace. On another occasion I had a twin come to see me, I could see the number 13 and water and someone flying through the air. She told me that was her twin brother who died in a waterskiing accident and the number 13 was a tattoo they both shared. DH: Do you think everyone has the ability to be clairvoyant? BI: Yes, but it’s much like music. Everyone has the ability to play an instrument but not everyone becomes Mozart. Keep practicing and developing your abilities to increase your awareness of your inner self and your 6th sense, which is all of your other senses heightened together. Your abilities will improve from meditating and looking within. There is so much external stimuli in our society unfortunately keeping our conscious mind’s preoccupied all the time. It takes a lot of practice to achieve a higher conscious state, which leads to the ability to transcend vibrations. DH: Why do you think some family members who have passed on don’t come through in readings? BI: Many of us think that because they’re in the spirit world that no matter what, they are available to communicate with us, which is not the case. We forget that life there is sort of like life here – you can’t be in two places at the same time. If a spirit is busy over there and can’t get away then they can’t be there at a particular time to connect with their living family member. We have to remember that just like us, they have a life over there too.

DH: Is it possible for us to connect with our loved ones who have passed on our own? BI: Absolutely! In fact, it’s much easier for them to receive our thoughts than for us to receive from them. As long as you have faith in the power of love and you visualize them and send a thought, it’s almost guaranteed they will get it. The challenge is that you may not be aware of them sending something back. However, practicing meditation calms the conscious mind to let those thoughts through. Also, don’t expect to receive a lot of information at first. And, if you do receive, you have to acknowledge it so they know, this naturally encourages a better connection the next time. DH: How do we learn more about mediumship? BI: The best place to start your focus is on the simplicity of meditation. Learn how to get down to one thought and use a mantra which helps with vibrations and breathing patterns. Then, in that experience, you start to become aware of other energies and vibrations that surround you. Look for a mentor. It’s true what they say…when the pupil is ready, the master will appear. Go to where others are practicing meditation and mantras. Meditation is a very difficult discipline to master and achieve, most don’t have the perseverance and discipline and don’t take the time to get the results. DH: What can people expect from attending your show? BI: I find there are two types of people who typically attend – ones that know quite a bit about mediums and others that have never been to anything like this. People are hoping to experience that absolute feeling of love and proof of their loved one’s awareness of them, and visa versa. They’re hoping to receive a connection and proof that their loved ones are alive somewhere else. But even if you don’t get a connection yourself, it’s amazing to be there to witness others getting one. Bernard Ilsley 'The London Medium' Writer, Producer, Performer & Guru has written, produced and published the book, 'Divinus Spritus' & the CD, 'Prima Luce' and has been featured in many publications, including the New York Times and the book 'Octopus'. create a Memory Book for all to enjoy. Once the picture is taken and the story written, ask them if it would be ok if you could find a loving home for these belongings? There are many people in your community who could benefit from these belongings and your partner would be “paying it forward.”

What If My Spouse Won’t De-Clutter?

One of the things I do for clients is create Memory Books for those that want to pare down their belongings but don’t want to lose the memory of the story behind it. Here’s an example of one of those items. I created a Memory Book of about 26 items this client was willing to let go of but didn’t want to lose the memory behind them.

By Regina Sanchez

W

hen I do speaking engagements, this is one of the questions I get asked a lot. No difference male or female there is usually one partner that won’t de-clutter and the partner asking the question is totally frustrated and at their wits end. What I find interesting many times while I’m doing an actual organizing project in someone’s home, they will blame the clutter on their spouse. “He just won’t throw anything away.” “She’s such a packrat.” As we are going through the process, I can clearly see the items belong to the accusing individual. I believe this is a way for them to “save face” and not be embarrassed by all the clutter. But there are many instances when a partner absolutely refuses to let go of any of their belongings. Then over time, the clutter becomes paramount. To add insult to injury, they inherit their parents’ items (for some reason they feel they can’t say, "no I don’t want your items"), and the clutter grows exponentially. So how do I answer that question, “What do I do if my spouse will not declutter?” It’s a simple answer but painful …not much. I know that’s not the answer you want to hear but it’s really the truth. You cannot make anyone do anything they don’t want to do or aren’t ready to do. Many times, people’s clutter represents many issues that would take a great deal of time to delve into for answers. When a spouse nags the other to get rid of the clutter, it gets them nowhere but resentment, bitterness and anger. 16

Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

With that being said, there are some strategies you can attempt to do to help your partner understand how you feel and hopefully make some changes. 1. Sit down with them and lovingly (and I mean lovingly) tell them how all the clutter is making you feel stressed. There was a study done by UCLA Professor Rena Preetti and Southern California regarding clutter. They found that women who lived amongst clutter had high cortisol levels whereas the men who lived with them didn’t. Continually living with high cortisol levels will only introduce long term health issues into your life. Explain to them that as much as you understand their need to keep all their belongings, it is causing a great amount of stress and you are concerned long term how that will affect you. 2. Do not under any circumstance tell them their belongings are junk. It will only create resentment and put a wall between you. 3. Ask them if they could localize their belongings to one room of the house or one area of the house. 4. Lastly, and this is my favorite, tell them you understand that the belongings have great meaning to them and there are great stories to be told. Ask them if they would be willing to take pictures of each of the items and then write the memory or story behind the item. Encourage them to get the stories on paper so other family members can enjoy them. Then

“This cookie jar has been in my family for at least 3 generations. It’s not really a useful item because the cookies don’t stay fresh. But the memories from this cookie jar are hard to leave behind. My mom wasn’t a cookie maker but she would buy our favorite cookies and store them in the cookie jar. We were not allowed to just help ourselves and had to wait until special times to have this treat. When we could, my sisters and I would cherish this time. We felt special as the special cookies were given to us.” What a treasure this book became to this specific client. It enabled her to still have the items via photos and read the memories that were so precious to her. But she was able to remove the items from her home as she and her husband were beginning the downsizing process. Her family would also be able to share in those memories. If we keep those memories inside and do not share them, they will be lost forever. Regina Sanchez is a Certified Health, Wellness & Organizational Coach who has been coaching clients since 2013. The Power of Touch By Elisabeth Johnson

Y

ears ago, when I first moved to Connecticut for work, I did not know anyone in the area. Over the next few weeks, I started feeling stressed, depressed, my skin was breaking out and my hair was shedding at a high rate. Then one day out of the blue, I got a hug from a student of mine. That hug moved me instantly to tears and I was shocked at my reaction. That night it hit me, I was missing human touch. I was so focused on work and settling in that I hadn’t even realized that it had been almost two months since I had last had a hug or anything more than a handshake. That was a powerful moment for me and has dictated a huge shift in my life since then. My search over the next few years was to find a place where I truly felt I could harness all that I was learning on my own journey, and for me to be able to help others in that same way. Cortiva Institute, formerly CT Center for Massage Therapy, ended up being that home for me, a place where I could work hard and truly help people. Look all around you. Typically, all you see is people with their cell phones, tablets, laptops, and smart watches. People prefer to text or call you on the phone, when you are just fifteen feet away. It is not uncommon to see a family text each other while in the same house. We have become so disconnected to each other as a society. Massage businesses are booming right now with people searching for that therapeutic touch. More and more people are searching for something that they are missing in their lives. Exhausted parents need someone to take care of them for a few minutes, frustrated business people need human touch, people recovering from cancer need someone to treat them as a person not a patient, the elderly need touch outside of just care, or an athlete needs help to keep in peak shape. Massage, and human touch in general, helps keep us grounded and comfortable in our own skin. One of my proudest moments as Campus Director of Cortiva Institute, is seeing students during closing circle express themselves about their journey and how they have changed. A closing circle is where the students, staff and faculty gather in a circle in one of the classrooms as a “final goodbye” and is a special moment to honor the journey that they have taken. True growth happens when you are forced to take a deep look at yourself and find healing in letting go of the past and becoming who you were meant to be. It isn’t just the physical changes that we see, it is the deep emotional ones that have an impact. During a recent closing circle, I saw once again another group that had become a family. They

used the power of touch to help heal not only themselves, but those around them as well. This class had been through so much - family deaths, depression, anxiety, job losses, car accidents and major health challenges all during their time in school. Through guidance and love, they made it through this together as a family. It was a powerful moment to sit back and see the confidence that was missing before, and the strength and power in their hands now. I was humbled looking at this class and know that they are going to change the world with the power of touch. One of my instructors, Liza Tuck Martinez says that, “While regular therapeutic touch creates a meaningful bond, it also allows space for the client to feel a deeper connection within themselves. Massage Therapists can be the vehicle in creating the initial healing grounds for the client. We must ask ourselves, where the scars of emotional, psychological, and spiritual abuse show up. Guided by instinct, we can locate these problem areas and begin the significant process of rebalancing the body in releasing the years of collected data that has become trapped deep within the Fascia Tissue that may or may not serve a purpose. Touch, connection and exchange of energy all play a part in bringing the body back to its homeostatic environment. Both Client and Therapist play a part interchangeably in reminding the tissue of “Connection,” and inviting the natural peace it craves and desires to be in - Balance, Harmony and most importantly the universal language we all share as energetic beings of light and that is LOVE.” Since massage entered my life, it has made me a happier, more fulfilled person with the knowledge that I can be the best me that I can be. My wounds have healed. I am more energetic and confident. I feel good. Take the time, give the people around you a hug and see how they change. Take care of yourself with regular massages and see how the quality of your life changes. It is an incredible feeling. Submitted by Elisabeth Johnson. Are You Programmed for Success or Failure?

By Pete Lotterhos

Y

our brain is “programmed” to operate and that programmed operation is creating the way you think, feel, speak, and perceive. The programmed “mechanism,” your mind, is creating the choices you make in your life and thus creating your life path. How do you develop the type of self-awareness that empowers you to expand the number of choices you have access to making in your life, realizing the number is infinite? The moment one gets that they are programmed and that they have access to choosing their lives, they experience the converse reality that they are unlimited possibility. They have expanded their choices from one (the programmed mind) to transcendence, an infinite number of possibilities. I would say that the person feels truly alive in this moment.

supportive environment of the training room where anything is possible to a context that enabled the existence of their programming. They re-enter a world of resistance, excuses and limitations—a programmed environment. They go back to an environment that limits performance and kills off possibility in exchange for power, safety and control. Transforming Your Environment

Thus, the journey begins for the brave soul when he/she chooses to take on the challenge of transforming their environment. Through their commitment to a life of excellence, one learns how to create transformational opportunities for themselves and for the people they love. Individuals learn how to think, feel, speak and perceive in a way that brings about awareness—the type of awareness that Through empowerment training, I am provides possibility versus defense reacable to see what is possible for healthy tions, and listening and accountability human beings. I see people come to grips versus sarcasm and disconnection. Women with the notion that anything is possible learn how to empower their children and and choose to work towards the creation husbands instead of unconsciously saboof their intended reality for themselves taging their performance for the opportuand the people they love. This experience nity to be acknowledged. Men learn how drives a type of inspiration; the person is to listen, be vulnerable, and take a stand ready to play again, to enjoy the challenge that empowers his family to take on life’s of life again or perhaps for the first time. challenges without fear of abandonment or Then, participants go home leaving the rejection. In essence, people learn how to source transformational possibilities for others. In doing so, an empowered environment, or family life or corporate culture, is born. A symbiotic relationship is created, which I call a win-win reality. The individual shares their transformed Self with 1414 the people they love and Tues., Wed., Fri. 10-6, Thurs. 10-7, and Sat. 10-5 the people they love empower them to live their transformation. 18 Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

Transforming The World Starts With You Before you can learn how to create an environment or culture that empowers others to choose possibility, you must first learn to lead yourself. You must learn how to be fully responsible for your Programmatic Reactions in a way that inspires others to go after transforming their own limiting beliefs, addictions, and behaviors. In practicing the behavior of accountability, you are learning how to be the source of possibility. This is where your training begins: think of it like this, you come to the empowerment training to stretch your mind the way an athlete goes to the gym to train. The athlete goes to the gym so they can perform on the field, not so they can perform in the gym. My passion is inspiring people to move beyond their limiting behaviors and embrace success that they never imagined possible. For the past 17 years, I’ve been leading three-day intensive seminars that help attendees came to grips with a powerful insight that all of us are programmed and that programming is dictating the quality of life. I grew up leading this seminar as I started when I was 25. I trained myself as I guided classes through their defensive responses to discover who they programmed themselves to be and how their programming operates. Large groups would arrive at this experiential insight getting they were free to create their lives. Graduates report marriages and lives were saved, anxiety and depression was released at alarming rates. Human beings through a three-day intensive seminar were able to access a transformed life. It’s an awesome experience seeing people transform, however, at first, people don’t want to face their barriers, and take responsibility, they kick and moan, yell and blame others for the quality of their lives.

It’s their husband’s fault, “he’s abusive and that’s why my marriage doesn’t work.” “My boss doesn't care about me, will not give a raise that I deserve and that’s why I can’t get out of debt.” AND what is astonishing is the whole of the group supports them at staying stuck in their lives as they defend the participant I’m coaching against me. I stand in front of the room fighting for their greater potential and the group of 100 educated participants sees me attacking them and this is where the group starts. I take a stand for human beings to get that they are the creating resource of their lives and they hide, defend, defer, disassociate and then the group defends them so that nothing changes and that’s the Game. The Game is interacting with people in a way they get to see that they can create, out of doing great work, an extraordinary life. This is what inspires me, the breakthrough, the a-ha, the I get it; I am responsible and I can have a loving marriage and I can make my life work and the room erupts with applause and possibility overwhelms the room. Because I can’t lead every company through my intensive 3-day seminar, I created a story that highlights what is truly possible. I warn you ahead of time that your mind will make things up so that you don’t buy into what is truly possible and this is where everyone starts. You will not be any different, as I imagine you don’t like me saying that, but I am going to teach you how to transform your limiting thinking if you choose to be coachable.

In TCM, the Liver is responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of qi through our bodies, including the gastrointestinal tract. When the Liver is stressed, that smooth flow gets choppy. I always envision a cartoon engine, humming along nicely when all of a sudden a monkey wrench gets thrown into it. The engine clunks and sputters, turns red, and starts to expand. There’s a buildup of friction, which causes heat, which causes expansion. ou’ve been eating so well. You’ve been exercising. You’re losing weight, you’re feeling more energetic, your clothes are fitting better. Just look in that mirror what a fine specimen you are! But… You still have a bit of that gut, huh? Oh, it’s definitely decreased. Like maybe there’s an orange in there now instead of a cantaloupe. And it’s not flab - you can barely pinch an inch. But whatever it is, you want it gone. So, what gives? Why does it feel like there’s literally something physical inside preventing you from attaining that nice flat belly you so deserve? Well, from an acupuncturist’s perspective, your “belt” is too tight. Your “belt” meridian that is. The actual term for this acupuncture channel is the Dai Mai, but it roughly translates to the “belt” meridian in English. The Dai Mai is one of eight unique acupuncture channels called the “Extraordinary Vessels.” The Extraordinary Vessels are highly susceptible to psycho-emotional stress and trauma. You’ve heard of traumatic experiences literally getting “stuck” in our bodies, right? Well the Extraordinary Vessels are prime targets for that stuck-ness to occur. And the Dai Mai happens to be especially vulnerable, perhaps because it is the only acupuncture channel that runs horizontally, roughly following the circumference of the diaphragm. When stress affects the Dai Mai, the meridian essentially tightens. Think about it - when you’re stressed, what’s one of the first things you notice if you check in with your body? You’re probably not breathing very deeply, are you? The smooth, rhythmic motion of the diaphragm isn’t so smooth and rhythmic under stress. Feels kind of tight around that “belt,” doesn’t it? And unfortunately, as that constriction occurs, the underlying organs are affected. [Just a note before we go on: when we speak of organs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we always need to stress that we’re talking about them more conceptually than literally. In TCM the organs are thought of as an energetic system or circuit with 20

As the Liver “expands,” it encroaches on s nearest neighbors - the Spleen and Stomach. These organs are considered the main organs of digestion in TCM, a yin/yang pair that is responsible for extracting the vital nutrients from our food and sending the rest down the pipes. When the Liver is crowding the Spleen and Stomach, they can’t do their jobs very well. Digestion slows. Now, not only is the engine not running smoothly, it’s getting clogged with gunk as well. It’s a vicious cycle. So, what can be done? There’s one particular acupuncture point that acts as a sort of release valve for the Dai Mai. And believe it or not, that point is on your foot. Now, while acupuncture is the best way to release the Dai Mai, let’s not make the perfect the enemy of the good - you can personally address a dysfunctional Dai Mai with some acupressure. The acupuncture point we want to work on is called GB-41 (you can Google it for a visual reference - fun fact: it’s labeled “GB” because it’s on the Gallbladder Meridian). Here’s how to find GB-41: put your finger where your two smallest toes meet the top of your foot. Now flex your toes up and start to slide your finger back toward your ankle while staying in the groove between the bones. In about an inch, your finger will slide over a tendon and plop down towards the outside edge of your foot into a little divot. Congratulations - you’ve found GB-41! There are many DIY techniques for working on this point, but you just need to do something that brings your focus and attention to it. Even just massaging it in small circular motions will get the job done. For more information on DIY techniques, along with more health issues for which to use them, download my free E-Book Go Poke Yourself from our website at www.CTfamilyacupuncture.com. At its core, the goal of acupuncture is to generate motion. When things are blocked, clogged, stuck or stagnant, dysfunction and discomfort are the result. And the Dai Mai is certainly no exception to this rule. Luckily, with acupuncture and TCM we have the tools to get circulation in the Dai Mai humming along smoothly again. Let’s unbuckle that belt a few notches, shall we? Matt Maneggia is a licensed acupuncturist and the founder of Connecticut Family Acupuncture with offices in Coventry, Glastonbury and West Hartford. Financial Health Check for Small Business Owners By Caroline Wetzel

I

f you are a small business owner, you know that the decisions you make daily impact your bottom line. Are you exercising the same care for your finances that you apply to the services you offer your clients? Following is a financial health check you can use to evaluate your financial health as a small business owner. Are You Focusing on The Big Picture? There are many pieces to a small business owner’s total financial picture. Your financial plan, budget, and investments are three critical components to keep in mind no matter how busy daily operations become. 1. Financial Planning Taxes can be one of the most significant expenses for business owners. In order to identify and follow the most appropriate tax planning strategies, small business owners need to be clear about both their business goals and personal financial goals. Do you: • Maintain a prioritized list of business and personal financial goals and refer to it when you need to make new decisions?

• Have a small business structure that offers you the most appropriate legal protections and benefits? • Reduce or defer taxes and maximize available deductions and credits as advised by an accountant and financial planner? This may include timing income and expenses, using charitable gifting, and saving for retirement? 2. Budget Management 82% of all small businesses that fail cite cash flow problems as the primary reason. One way to identify cash flow challenges before they become lethal is to manage a budget according to your business plan. Do you: • Know how much revenue you must generate to break even and cover expenses before profits? • Monitor your income, expenses, inventory, credit, and cash regularly, adjusting and rebalancing where required so that you cover your fixed expenses and maintain funds in your cash reserve?

• Use your budget, break-even point, and cash flows over time to evaluate your business financing options and identify the ones that make most sense for you, when financing is required? 3. Investments Many small business owners invest all of their time and money into their business. Do you: • Maintain a cash cushion for both your personal finances and business needs, so that if you run into a cash flow crisis you have something to access? • Save regularly and invest any cash inflows that exceed your current expenses and immediate lifestyle needs into an account outside of your business? • Diversify your non-business investments across companies outside of your industry, in different geographies offering services that vary from yours?

Winning the Weight Loss Battle: Part Two By Diane Bahr-Groth, CH, TFT-Adv

he Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis weight loss program is an amazing new method that can naturally help people make better food choices and lose weight. This technique is a safe and healthy alternative to weight loss surgery and is designed to replicate the effects, results and benefits of the gastric band or bypass surgery without going under the knife. Best of all, there is no diet, no deprivation and no hospital stay.

This unique and very specialized concept was originally developed in Europe by UK Clinical Hypnotist Sheila Granger. Clinical trials have shown a 95% success rate with the average weight loss of 7 lbs. the first week and 1-2 lbs. weekly, all without deprivation or dieting. Both traditional and Virtual Gastric Band hypnosis programs are equally successful but simply vary in their approach toward creating the desired changes. Client weight loss varies from person to person based on their activity levels, age, portion sizes and motivation but most experience profound changes in eating habits and food choices as they begin to reduce clothing sizes and lose weight. Most people begin to feel better, more positive and empowered to lose weight at their very first session. The Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis weight loss program may be just the solution for those in search of a natural method to lose their potentially unhealthy excess weight without the high cost, risks and side effects of invasive surgery. The Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis program gives the subconscious mind suggestions that the stomach is much smaller, the size of a golf ball, as if the gastric band were surgically installed. The suggestions prevent over-eating and encourage smaller portion sizes resulting in measurable reduction of body fat and inches. The Virtual Gastric Band program is a series of 5 Hypnosis sessions personalized for each client’s specific needs and scheduled once per week. The first session may be for 2-3 hours and subsequent sessions are usually one hour each. A Hypnosis CD or MP3 is used daily to reinforce the healthy eating and weight loss changes desired. The remaining Hypnosis sessions are recorded for the client’s personal goals and continued success. This Hypnosis program

helps to create natural, automatic and positive changes for healthy eating, exercise and weight loss as well as developing a healthier relationship with food. Most people begin to feel better, more positive and empowered to eat less and lose weight at their very first session. Client satisfaction rate for this unique weight loss program is remarkably high. Some clients have lost 20-23 lbs. in the first few weeks, all without feelings of deprivation and without dieting. Anyone who has made a personal commitment to change behavior or improve their health and life realizes how difficult it can be to institute and maintain regular and positive improvements. The Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis program may be just the answer for those looking for a way to finally be in control of their food choices and portion sizes without being deprived of favorite foods or dieting. This hypnosis program is available for those who want to reach their ideal weight without the high cost, risks or side effects of invasive surgery. The Virtual Band Hypnosis program can help create the healthy changes needed to naturally lose weight, without dieting, without deprivation and in a very natural and relaxing way. Hypnosis can naturally help empower you to overcome the mental or emotional obstacles preventing you from living life to its fullest. ness but provide poor traction for athletic activities. Providing appropriate rugs for traction in areas of activity can be very helpful for house pets, most remarkably perhaps for house rabbits whose natural resting posture really requires traction to prevent chronic spinal stress. Long nails and hooves interfere with the normal gait pattern and can create chronic stress in the joints and in the feet. Once nails have gotten quite long, it may require a well-trained groomer or veterinary office to help regain a more normal nail length. Often animals start walking better almost immediately after their foot is allowed to regain its normal orientation. Chiropractic Care for Arthritis

Natural Options to Prevent and Alleviate Arthritis in Our Pets By Amy Matthews, VMD, PhD

A

common experience for many is that our wonderful joints, often so fluid and functional in our youth, can get worn down and develop arthritis over time. Nobody enjoys running and jumping and physical play any more than our pets: cats, dogs, horses, goats, even the hamster on a wheel! And naturally, we can end up seeing a lot of arthritis in animals. Pets can develop arthritis from general wear and tear, especially in the absence of nutritional support for the various tissues of the joints. Some pets may be born with a tendency to develop poorly formed joints, as in hip dysplasia; these animals deal with arthritis from a young age. Arthritis can also be a consequence of a specific catastrophic injury, like a broken bone or torn cruciate ligament or herniated spinal disc. Less obvious is that subtle injuries, like spinal misalignments or a painful fractured nail that healed but left a change in the gait pattern, can lead to chronic imbalances in the body that contribute to abnormal wear and eventual arthritis. Arthritis Prevention Prevention where possible is the best medicine. There are both whole food and supplement based nutritional approaches to support the joints and minimize inflammation, including such possibilities as glucosamine/chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids, and raw food diets where appropriate. Suitable activity such as regular exercise and adequate space and surfaces for natural movement is crucial to support muscle and connective tissue strength. The smooth slippery surfaces we have inside many of our homes are good for cleanli24

Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

Chiropractic care can play a big role in preventing and managing arthritis. Many things can cause the spine to lose proper alignment and function: rough and tumble dog play, cats misjudging their favorite high perches, falls due to slippery or uneven surfaces, repetitive athletic activities, weak core muscles, congenital vertebral malformations, and trauma. Early chiropractic care for puppies at 2-6 months can reveal and correct imbalances in the spine, creating better balance in the gait and optimizing movement during development. Puppies who experience a trauma such as being dropped or getting a limb or their head stuck somewhere are priorities for chiropractic evaluation. Joints in the limbs can become misaligned which can lead to improper development and early arthritis if not corrected. Often animals will experience a trauma like a fall and seem to recover after a day or two, but this recovery is often compensation rather than true recovery. Chiropractic care is often very beneficial for these animals. A less commonly appreciated role for chiropractic is seen with rescue animals. Many rescued pets bring emotional and physical traumas that can be quite hidden. Emotional traumas can be buried in, and released from, the spine. Evaluating new rescue pets can help resolve hidden physical traumas and emotional baggage stored in the musculoskeletal system and allow for balanced, open movement that keeps joints healthier, with the side benefit of improved emotional health. Musculoskeletal optimization such as chiropractic care not only helps prevent arthritis by keeping the joints working closer to their optimum alignment; it also helps treat arthritis by allowing the nervous system to coordinate as well as possible to compensate for arthritic changes in the joints. Physical therapy is another approach that can improve the muscle strength and balance in an animal. Physical therapy can include exercises and underwater treadmill work done by a trained therapist as well as exercises owners are trained to do with their pets at home. Pharmaceuticals vs. Herbs The dominant approach to arthritis in mainstream medicine is the use of pharmaceuticals such as non-steroidal, anti-inflammatories and drugs that act to modify pain perception in the brain. Often these can significantly improve quality of life in animals, but many animals develop side effects like diarrhea or vomiting, development or progression of kidney disease, mental dullness, or rear limb weakness. Even those that do well with these drugs may eventually need other support to improve their quality of life. Fortunately, there are several other excellent options to help control the pain of arthritis. Herbs can be used to modify arthritic pain by accessing many different pathways. Some arthritis patients may suffer from significant muscle spasm, others from dry cracking joints, and yet others from joint swelling. Some patients are worse when they first get up,

others after exercise, and others when it is damp and rainy outside. Each of these represents a different pattern, and different patients will have different combinations of patterns that can be addressed by creating a personalized herbal formula or using timetested Chinese herbal formulations. Acupuncture for Pain Finally, acupuncture has an excellent track record for alleviating arthritic pain, both in the literature and in clinical practice. This ancient art involves the placement of very thin, atraumatic needles in specific locations around the body. It can have profound effects on pain, muscle spasm, local blood flow, and healing. Often patients start off with weekly treatments for a month and then taper to monthly treatments for arthritis, though protocols can vary. Many animals really relax and seem to enjoy their acupuncture treatments. In summary, there are many excellent ways to marshal the body’s resources and help the muscles and metabolism harmonize to improve comfort and regain some of the mobility and joyfulness of natural movement that is affected by arthritis. Fortunately for our pets, there are more and more veterinarians who specialize in these holistic options and can provide holistic options for arthritic complaints and prevention.

What’s All the “Buzz” About CBD

By Robert M. Murphy, ND

Y

es, there’s been a lot of talk more recently about CBD, the cannabinoid derived from Cannabis and Hemp plants. Ironically, Hemp derived CBD or Cannabidiol does not provide the “Buzz” or psychoactive/euphoric effect which its THC containing close cousin Cannabis does. CBD is a phytocannabinoid and as such, is plant derived. There are also synthetic cannabinoids such as the prescription drug Marinol. The third division of cannabinoids are the endocannabinoids that are part of the “endocannabinoid system”(ECS), which functions inside our bodies as a homeostatic regulator.

The grandfather of cannabinoid research the Israeli scientist Raphael Mechoulam discovered the chemical structure of CBD in 1963. He would go on in the late 90’s with fellow researcher BenShabat to discover the “entourage effect” that CBD had with other compounds found, for example, in hemp oil such as terpenes and bioflavonoids, which in combination with the CBD have a more profound physiological action. It was also discovered in the late 1990’s that our human bodies, like all vertebrates, had an endocannabinoid system complete with its own endocannabinoids (AEA and 2-AG) and cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2).

History of CBD

The Endocannabinoid System

Reportedly the cannabinoids THC and CBD were first isolated in 1940 by R. Adams at the Washington, DC Narcotics Laboratory, but the medicinal use of these compounds as Cannabis are found over 5,000 years ago in the Chinese pharmacopea. Cannabis was also used in Greek and Islamic medicine and was listed in the US Pharmacopea from 1850-1937. The 1937 Marijuana Tax Act made cannabis exorbitantly expensive and by 1970 it was placed on Schedule I as a restricted drug with the DEA.

The author Ethan Russo, MD states, “Taken together, the three components of the ECS, the endocannabinoids, their regulatory enzymes and receptors, can be thought of as a key mediator of physiological homeostasis, thus ensuring that various bodily systems function within tight parameters with neither a deficiency nor excess of activity.” The Endocannabinoid system is active throughout the body including the central and peripheral nervous, gastrointestinal, immune, endocrine, musculoskeletal and integumentary systems. To date, there are many studies in animals, in vitro (test tube), human anecdotes and case studies which demonstrate the wide range of potential medicinal actions of cannabinoids including CBD. It should be kept in mind that we do not have the number of large human clinical trials that we need to prove the wide potential of applications which may be derived from these cannabinoids. Some of the human studies have involved combinations of CBD and THC, like the prescription drug Sativex for MS muscle spasm and there has been recent FDA approval of GW Pharmaceuticals’ new drug Epidiolex containing purified CBD for the treatment of two rare seizure disorders in children. The educator and physician Stefan Kuprowsky, ND, a naturopathic doctor in Vancouver, BC, points to the wide array of potential conditions we may treat with CBD owing to the broad homeostatic and regulatory actions the ECS has on the body. These include CBD’s potential to lower blood pressure, relieve anxiety, antipsychotic, anti-ischemic (improve blood flow), reduction in seizure activity, anti-inflammatory, relief of Crohn’s disease, neuroprotection (after a stroke or concussion), joint and muscle pain relief, antidiabetic, relief of psoriasis and bone stimulant.

26

Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

CBD and THC also appear to have roles in the treatment of cancer and the side effects of chemotherapy. Legalizing CBD CBD has become widely available in the past couple of years in various forms and dosage strengths. Much of what is on the market is derived from Hemp Oil and can be purchased in capsules, liquids and topicals. Is CBD from all sources legal in all states? Only CBD from hemp oil with a negligible amount of less than 0.3% THC content can be sold country wide. CBD derived from cannabis can only be purchased legally in states which have recreational marijuana laws or if one has a prescription cannabis card in a state legal for medical cannabis like Connecticut. The looming question is what will the FDA do with the legality of CBD now that there is an approved CBD based prescription. An FDA Q&A website is reported to assert that CBD products are excluded from definition of a dietary supplement under Federal Food Drug & Cosmetic Act (FDCA) as amended by the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. Will GW Pharma pressure the FDA to redefine CBD as a prescription only and remove it from over the counter? The recent signing of the Federal Farm Bill may mitigate this possibility as Hemp has been reclassified as a ‘Commodity” and farmers will not have the previous restrictions on cultivation and sale of this crop and its products. Given the tremendous potential for its use, and the anecdotal results which I am hearing from and beginning to see in my patients, I truly hope that it will remain available over the counter with the following provisos. CBD, like the herb St. John’s Wort and grapefruit, has the potential for unintended prescription drug interactions through interference with the liver’s Cytochrome

P450 enzyme system. This liver detoxification system regulates the metabolism of many drugs including beta blockers and calcium channel blockers used in high blood pressure, Warfarin an anti-coagulent, antidepressants like SSRI’s and anti-tissue transplant drugs like Cyclosporine, and many other drugs. While generally considered safe and non-toxic, CBD should be taken with other prescriptions only under the monitoring and advice of their prescriber. The CBD product one chooses should preferably be organically grown, hemp derived, containing all the “broad spectrum” ingredients found in hemp including synergistic terpenes and bioflavonoids and have independent lab testing for environmental contaminants and accuracy of dose content. The topic of dosing is outside the scope of this article, but the general con-

sensus is to start low and work up slowly until the desired results are obtained. It remains to be seen what fate holds for CBD in today's shifting political and regulatory landscape. I am optimistic that CBD will remain available over the counter and that it’s true potential will be proven in a wide variety of clinical trials in the many diseases it appears to hold promise for. Dr Robert Murphy is a naturopathic physician and an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine. He practices at The Center for Natural Medicine, LLC, 640 main St., Watertown. 860-945-1004. Dr Murphy is accepting new patients and participates in most major health insurance plans. How Genetics and the Environment Influence Your Gut By Nick Edgerton, ND

A

tremendous amount of research is coming out in regards to genetics and personalized wellness. Gastrointestinal health, although largely impacted by environment, is also influenced by genetics. This is why no single diet is universally successful. People have unique biochemical individuality, based on their genes, which governs how well they may tolerate different foods. Indigestion symptoms may vary from upset stomach, abdominal pain, nausea, gas, bloating, heartburn, constipation, and/or diarrhea. This article will discuss how and why environment sets the foundation for proper gut health, and the role of genetics as an influencer. The Environment A person's environment is the external stimuli that surrounds them. A discussion about gut health will always involve food. Food is an important aspect of environment because this is largely manageable. It is an activity that involves choice three to four times a day. For proper gut health, a person should be eating nutrientdense real food at every meal. Real food is different than the foodlike products in the aisles of the grocery store. Food-like products tend to be highly processed and nutrient-devoid. Real food incorporates plants and high-quality unprocessed meat and fish. These foods are rich in minerals that are important for connective tissue health for optimizing gut wall health, amino acids for precursors to neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin (important for digestion), vitamins for optimal biochemical enzyme activity, and many other important compounds. Making a shift back towards natural, unprocessed foods is integral for proper gut health. Food Sensitivities Food sensitivities and allergies can play a role in one’s environment. Food sensitivities are the product of one’s environment, not their genetics. While food allergy symptoms are remarkable (hives, trouble breathing, itching), food sensitivity reactions are subtle, delayed over the course of 6-48 hours after consumption. Food sensitivity symptoms are vague: headache, fatigue, bloating, or skin irritation. If someone is eating chicken eggs and they have a food sensitivity, this will cause inflammation in the GI tract. Inflammation here can worsen ‘leaky gut’ (or intestinal hyperpermeability), reduce nutrient absorption, and sway the wrong ratio of bacteria in the gut which can cause various subjective symptoms previously mentioned as indigestion.

Antibiotics Antibiotics have a remarkable effect on the digestive tract. Antibiotics trigger large shifts in microbial diversity. Imagine the GI tract as a jungle: a complex biodiversity of plants, trees, animals, and insects all working together to thrive. Now visualize a pesticide coming through and wiping out certain aspects of this ecosystem. After this, it will be a race to see which plants grow back fastest and which animals or insects thrive. Sometimes it will be toxic weeds that grow fastest - depending on the environment’s growing conditions. This is essentially what happens when one uses antibiotics, they kill bad bacteria, but also kill good bacteria, leading to a development of the wrong bacteria afterwards. Antibiotics are useful and life-saving, although public health officials agree they are over-prescribed and frequently misused. The human gut contains about 500 different bacteria species, and most probiotic supplements contain less than 10 species. An antibiotic may destroy a species completely, and that species may not be replaceable - forever changing one’s gut microbiome. That being said, for the majority of people reading this, probiotics do a great job in reducing indigestion symptoms, especially when associated with post-antibiotic use indigestion. Viruses & Bugs Viruses and other stomach bugs can trigger shifts in the microbial diversity. If a toxic bug enters the gut, the body will purge itself in either direction to clear itself of this foreign invader. With this, goes some of the good bacteria populations too. Patients often report a change in overall digestion, such as increased symptom frequency of heartburn, constipation, and diarrhea following one of these acute infections. Their ‘new normal’ can be less comfortable than their original digestive status. Xenobiotics Xenobiotics are foreign substances that are not naturally occurring in a human. This includes antibiotics (previously mentioned), pesticides, cleaning chemicals, air pollutants, and heavy metals. These have all demonstrated a transient change in the gut microbiome diversity. A dominant species of healthy bacteria will be outpaced by another bacteria; and this shift in populations can cause indigestion symptoms. Many of these studies do show that once the aggravating factor, or obstacle to cure, is removed from the system, the body rebalances to the original diversity and symptoms resolve. However in order for this to happen we have to have

the proper environment, which consists of whole foods, clean air, clean water, moderate exercise, and proper sleep hygiene. Lifestyle Factors Other lifestyle factors, considered a part of one’s environment, is their sleep quality and stress management. Stress will have a deleterious effect on one’s digestive health. Stress stimulates cortisol which stimulates excitatory neurotransmitters which force the body into sympathetic mode also known as ‘fight or flight’. Digestion occurs during parasympathetic mode - ‘rest and digest’. One cannot digest food appropriately when fighting or running from a bear. Today people endure chronic stressors such as unhealthy relationships, family stressors, difficult job conditions, or post-traumatic stress disorder. This leads to high sympathetic tone and one may experience indigestion symptoms. Similarly, sleep is important as it is a time that the body can give digestion a break and repair the gut wall. If one is not getting quality sleep, they will be more likely to experience GI distress. Exercise has an important role in GI health. Movement activity acts as a physical force to move the bowels. Also, exercise has a beneficial effect on the gut microbiome. Exercise supports a healthy population of good bacteria more than a probiotic over time. The foundations of GI health will be established with proper lifestyle choices, and optimizing the environment.

Genetics & Your Gut Considering the human genome project was completed in 2003, there has been a tremendous amount of new information coming from genetics research. Coinciding with this is the new research in regards to gut health and the microbiome. Nutrigenomics is the effect of nutrition and lifestyle on genes. Nutrigenomics may detect that someone has a genetic weakness that reduces their ability to create certain enzymes which can predispose them to certain diseases. Nutrigenomics is not used in the setting of genetic diseases.

A fascinating piece of research found that families have similar microbiomes. Part of this is because of the environment (air quality, water source, shared diets, and other lifestyle choices), but independent from this was a genetic influence. Based on shared familial genes put into different environments, gut microbiomes diversity were still related. This is a direct genetic influence on gut health. deplete environment function worse than a gene with several SNP’s.

Other direct genetic influences on gut health involve lactase deficiency in patients with Lactose Intolerance. This is a genetic issue where there is not enough lactase made, and the severity exists on a spectrum from mild to severe lactose intolerance. Another inheritable digestive problem is fructose malabsorption. The ALDOB gene that makes an enzyme, aldolase B, which is an enzyme used in the degradation of fructose to useable glucose. The spectrum of symptoms range from low blood sugar, vomiting, stomach pain, to liver disease. There are other possible enzyme deficiencies that impact digestion due to genetic mutations, but these are quite rare.

There are other SNP’s that influence how a person tolerates macromolecules such as fat versus carbohydrates. These can indirectly affect our gut health by affecting overall disease burden. If someone is eating a problematic diet based on their genes there will be higher rates of chronic disease. As previously mentioned, serotonin is important in digestion, playing key roles in intestinal peristalsis and secretion. There are several genes involved with the creation of serotonin, and there may be SNP’s in these genes responsible for objectively low serotonin levels. If this was true for a patient, they may experience improved digestion with optimizing their nutrients for those specific gene’s function.

Indirect Genetic Influence There are many other examples of indirect genetic influence on gut health. One of these examples involves the HLA genes (human leukocyte antigen, in which there are several), and they make proteins that act as immune system regulators. Patients may have genetic variations in these genes that predispose them to autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and Celiac disease.

Why Dr Steven Hinchey? Both he and his staff

Genetic variants are not considered genetic mutations or genetic disease. Researchers have discovered the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s, pronounced ‘snips’) in an individual's health. SNP’s influence the functionality of a gene. Everyone has thousands of SNP’s, but case by case they vary in their influence and importance. Having a SNP does not equal disease, SNP’s can only be used as risk factors. This is why environment is so important, because environment has a positive effect on genetic expression. In fact some ‘normal’ genes in a stressed and nutrient-

One cannot separate environment from genetics, they are very closely dependent on one another. Lifestyle medicine leads the way for a healthy environment as well as healthy genetic expression. Despite all the fascinating research coming out about genetics it still comes down to the basics of wellness. Whole foods, regular activity, stress management techniques, and adequate sleep. Beyond this, one can apply nutrigenomics to help better understand a condition and precisely optimize one’s wellness. Give Your Mind a Detox By Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC

W

hen we talk about detox, we typically focus on just the physical body. What about the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies? Those need to be detoxed as well. Let’s take the mind for example. The mind is virtually unlimited in its capacity, but for all of us there seems to be a lot of old garbage in its vast storehouse. We know that every thought, whether in word or image form, affects our emotional body and in turn elicits a physical response on one level or another, whether we’re aware of it or not. What if we could clear our minds of all those old unwanted thoughts and memories so that they would be clean and have more capacity for new, more pleasant and positive thoughts, which in turn, would have a more positive effect on our overall state of health? We don’t let our kitchen garbage go unemptied for weeks or months at time. Most of us appreciate a clean home environment, and yet most of us haven’t cleaned our mental, emotional or energy bodies in years, possibly decades or ever for that matter. Physical detox is all the rage. We even clean old data and programming out of our computers, but not ourselves. For most of us our mental, emotional and energy bodies look like the interior of a hoarder’s home. Some folks might argue that we need all those memories. What would we do without them, who would we be without them? How could we protect ourselves from the same thing happening again if we didn’t remember the “danger” in the first place? I’m going to argue to the contrary. I don’t think we need all those old thoughts, antiquated beliefs or painful memories. I think we need to understand what lessons we were intended to learn from them, carry that learning forward and leave the rest behind. Let’s face it; much of what we thought or believed was not original to us. They were things that people told us, or things we read in books or saw in movies, essentially the opinions of others that in many cases became our unquestioned beliefs. Other mind clutter takes the form of misperceptions or misunderstanding and distorted thinking that has gotten warped when it passed through the filters of our perception. It also includes other peoples’ stuff; their stories, their conflicts, their fears. It’s like having 10 or 20 other peoples’ possessions cluttering the rooms of our home. And those fears, instead of protecting us from that fearful event happening again, actually act like magnets instead of deflectors as we’d hoped. I worked for almost a year on a protocol designed to detox our other bodies, tested it on myself and noticed immediately that I felt mentally lighter, like the weight of the world had been lifted. My heart felt lighter, my thinking became clearer; I could easily identify

my priorities, my memory improved. I had more energy and the ability to stay more grounded and centered vs. letting life’s challenges throw me off balance. I could laugh more easily and take life and myself a little less seriously – and best of all, I felt much more efficient and productive. In short, the results were better than I expected, and I’ve been getting great feedback from clients who’ve been through the process as well. Some folks have been a bit on the timid side about the process saying, “I don’t want to know what’s there. What if I bump into something that’s upsetting?” And I say, that is totally your prerogative, but you need to remember that whatever you bump into, it’s over and you’ve obviously survived it because you’re here. Whatever it is, it’s safe to explore – and if your subconscious mind, which is your protective mind, doesn’t feel that it’s the time for you to be aware of it – it will either tuck it back into the recesses of your mind or throw it out without your having to be aware of its content. In my opinion, which is based on 18 years of experience, it’s far better to take a look inside, and with the help of the powerful subconscious mind, decide what no longer serves you and clean it out so that it’s not rotting somewhere in your being and causing dis-ease on other levels. You might even be surprised, as I was, and find that you start to clean your house, your garage, and your yard. Clean inside and out. Here’s what one client had to say: “You made the whole process feel so easy and safe, and I’m nothing short of amazed at how I feel. Number one I feel physically 20 pounds lighter. I feel much happier; I’m calmer with my children, my husband and my coworkers. I feel so much more positive and like I can handle what I need to handle without getting all stressed out and tied in knots. I wish I had known about this decades ago.” - Sarah, from Guilford Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC, is the owner, lead hypnotist and hypnosis instructor at Mind Matters Hypnosis Centers in Guilford and West Hartford. CBD and Chronic Pain By David M. Brady, ND

C

hronic pain conditions continue to be among the top reasons people visit their physician, and this is rising. At the birth of this trend, pharmaceutical narcotics were dished out with little forethought of the future and the potential societal impact. Consequently, narcotic dependency, as well as deaths from opioid pain medications and related drugs of abuse, soon became a national concern requiring more stringent guidelines on the dispensing of these drugs and forcing both patients and practitioners to begin looking for alternatives for pain management. Natural botanicals with anti-inflammatory pain-relieving compounds, including turmeric (Curcuma longa; a source of curcumin) and frankincense (Boswellia carterii) began gaining attention. Among these natural therapies, rose a very effective compound – cannabidiol (CBD) – but its familial connection to marijuana shadowed it with caution and political debate. Its popularity has continued to gain momentum as the courageous have sought to untangle CBD from its psychoactive cousin, THC, and make it an acceptable tool for some of the most stubborn cases of chronic pain. 32

Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

CBD From Hemp or Medical Marijuana? CBD (cannabidiol) is a cannabinoid compound extracted from the cannabis plant. Various Cannabis species exist and supply over 100 cannabinoids, but medicine has focused primarily on either tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD) for pain management. Cannabis indica is a short plant and densely populated with broad leaves. This species is often referred to as marijuana since it contains up to 30% of the psychoactive cannabinoid, THC, which can be harvested from its flowering tops for its euphoric properties. Cannabis indica naturally contains very little CBD, which counteracts the psychoactive properties of THC; however, some strains of marijuana can be bred to promote higher levels of CBD. Commercially growing high-CBD strains of marijuana for medical use has remained controversial but is becoming more acceptable on a state-by-state basis. Cannabis sativa L. is a taller and more narrow species, relatively low in THC (approximately 0.3% or less) but rich in CBD, which is harvested from the oil of the seeds and stalk fibers. This species

is traditionally known as hemp, and like medical marijuana, is grown commercially under controlled conditions. It may sometimes be referred to as “industrial hemp” because it can be harvested for a variety of commercial uses. It is important to note that CBD from either medical marijuana or hemp is an identical substance. Its source is not recognized by the body. By dry weight, CBD is more concentrated in marijuana plants, but after the oil is extracted from each, the difference is insignificant. Hemp grows faster than high-CBD strains of medical marijuana, making it an environmentally sustainable and good source of CBD. How Cannabinoids Act on the Body Both CBD and THC act upon a comparatively recently discovered communication system in the body, known as the endocannabinoid system. This system is laced throughout the central and peripheral nervous system. The complex nature of this system is still being researched, but we know there are two primary receptors through which THC and CBD can attach and carry out their effects on the body. One receptor is called CB1 and when activated by a compound such as THC, it stimulates

pathways that promote the mind-altering effects associated with traditional marijuana. The second receptor is called CB2 and when it is activated by a compound such as CBD, it not only helps to ameliorate the actions of CB1, but helps the body manage pain. CBD for Chronic Pain Management Cannabinoids such as THC and CBD have been studied extensively for their use in various chronic pain conditions, but are especially helpful agents for controlling neuropathic pain. This is chronic pain of the nerves that waxes and wanes, and may even lead to tingling or numbness, such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), formerly called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD). It often arises as a result of peripheral nerve injury, but can be mediated by other factors. Research has shown that activating the CB2 receptor seems to be beneficial in managing chronic pain, which doesn’t often respond well to other therapies. Since CBD attaches to this specific receptor, it may be helpful in activating the pathways that ease the chronic pain, often associated with long-term or degenerative conditions such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes. Cannabinoids like CBD may also help alleviate pain by targeting and activating glycine receptors in the central nervous system. These receptors are located in various regions of the brain and spinal cord and play an important role in reducing chronic inflammatory pain and neuropathic pain. When inflammatory factors such as prostaglandins are present, they often shut down these receptors, which increases the sensation of pain, but CBD can reactivate these receptors and decrease pain hypersensitivity.

ness, mood disorders and anxiety after using cannabinoids further supporting its possible use in this chronic pain condition. As cannabinoids such as CBD become more widely accepted as an effective therapy in pain management, their mysterious beginnings should not frighten individuals away from trying them as an alternative to toxic narcotics. Whether derived from hemp or medical marijuana, CBD has shown itself to be an effective tool for managing the debilitating pain that is a companion to so many individuals with chronic pain conditions. CBD for Fibromyalgia Chronic, widespread pain originating from a dysfunction in the central nervous system is characteristic of fibromyalgia. Some researchers have suggested that a deficiency in the endocannabinoid system, which governs pain sensitivity in the central nervous system, may be involved in the lowered pain threshold, and mood and sleep challenges that accompany fibromyalgia. In cases where heightened pain sensitivity was arising from a depression of the endocannabinoid system, treatment with cannabinoids reduced the pain sensitivity, as expected. In other studies, individuals with fibromyalgia experienced significant relief from pain, sleep disturbances, stiff-

Natural Ways to Manage Mild-to-Moderate Depression By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® "[M]ore than 30 million Americans take antidepressant drugs...The effectiveness of...[these] drugs has been the subject of several reviews. The results indicate that they have not been shown to work any better than a placebo in cases of mild to moderate depression, the most common reason for prescription medication...In fact, the research indicates that SSRIs and other antidepressant drugs might actually increase the likelihood of suicide in adults and children... These medications...may cause significant side effects." ~ Michael T. Murray, ND, & Joseph Pizzorno, ND, The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (3rd Edition 2012) "Depression, the most common type of mental illness, is the second leading cause of disability and is increasing among Americans. The effect of improved nutrition, particularly with dietary supplements, on depression may provide an alternative to standard medical treatment." ~ Lewis, et al., The effect of methylated vitamin B complex on depressive and anxiety symptoms and quality of life in adults with depression. epression ranges in degree, from occasional episodes arising as normal responses to life’s many stressors, to major depressive disorder (MDD). While scientists continue to study its causes, they are known to include preexisting chronic disease states (hypothyroidism, blood sugar imbalances, anemia, and digestive conditions, such as food allergies and systemic yeast overgrowth/candidiasis), various prescription drugs, nutrient deficiencies, sleep deprivation, and environmental toxicity. While it is always advisable to consult with a holistic practitioner and/ or therapist to address depression and its underlying causes, you can begin to obtain relief from your depression through lifestyle changes and natural remedies. According to Michael Murray, ND, and Joseph Pizzorno, ND, certain “lifestyle changes, coupled with regular exercise and a healthful diet, are more than likely to produce better clinical results than antidepressant drugs, with no side effects.” Symptoms & Brain Chemistry Mild-to-moderate persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia, or PDD) and seasonal depression (seasonal affective disorder, or SAD), are two of the most common forms of depression that undermine the well-being of millions of Americans each year. A PDD diagnosis in adults requires daily depression during most of 34

Natural Nutmeg - March 2019

each day over two years, with 3 of 9 specific symptoms, including hopelessness, low self-esteem, fatigue, irritability/anger, reduced productivity, and difficulty concentrating or making decisions. SAD usually sets in during late fall/early winter when there is less sunlight. In addition to PDD symptoms, those suffering from SAD may experience: (1) disrupted sleep and oversleeping; (2) changes in appetite (especially carbohydrate cravings) or weight gain; and (3) frequent thoughts of death or suicide. Understanding just how PDD/SAD sets in can be instructive in determining how to address it naturally. To support its many functions, the brain uses a number of neurotransmitters, chemical messengers constantly released and received by the brain’s nerve cells (neurons), to communicate with other parts of itself and the nervous system. The entire information transmission cycle occurs in seconds. Any problem that interrupts the smooth functioning of this chain of chemical events can negatively impact the brain and nervous system. Studies have linked depression to imbalances of certain neurotransmitters, including: (1) Serotonin (take 5HTP, SAM-e; eat carbohydrates, chicken/turkey, nuts, chia seeds) – elevates mood, increases relaxation, and controls cognition, blood sugar/insulin, appetite, cardiovascular health, impulse control, and sleep; (2) Dopamine (take L-tyrosine, SAM-e; eat almonds, chocolate, avocados, pumpkin seeds, bananas) - creates a natural high, required for sexual arousal, deficiency is linked to movement disorders (e.g. Parkinsons); (3) Norepinephrine (take L-tyrosine) – involved in the fight or flight reaction to stress, arousal, and cortisol production; (4) GABA (take L-glutamine; eat salmon, nuts, eggs, legumes) – regulates communication between brain cells to inhibit the activity of neurons, and thus stabilizes mood and promotes relaxation; (5) Endogenous Opioids (endorphins, enkephalins, dynorphins) (exercise, yoga, acupuncture) – promote feelings of well-being and reduce pain; and (6) Acetylcholine – excessively high levels are believed to induce depression. Prescription Drugs That Can Cause Depression Medications that cause depression do so by altering brain chemicals in some way. Some commonly prescribed drugs that reportedly cause depression include: antibiotics; statins for high cholesterol; anti-anxiety, insomnia, and seizure/muscle medications; heart medications, such as beta-blockers and calciumchannel blockers; hormone replacement therapy estrogens; birth control drugs; and opioids.

Some Safe Natural Approaches to Depression The best approach to elevating mood is holistic, one that focuses on necessary diet and lifestyle changes (ceasing smoking; high intensity interval training exercise; improved sleep) and appropriate nutritional supplements. 1. Diet Modification As with any chronic condition, it is critical first to examine one’s daily diet when addressing depression. Though nutritional psychiatry is an emerging field, one explanation of the impact of food on mood is considered to be what is known as the gut-brain axis. It is widely accepted that: (1) the majority of the fibers of the body’s main vagus nerve, which oversees mood control, carry information from the gut to the brain; (2) since the brain requires a constant supply of healthy fuel from food, selecting the right foods determines how it functions; (3) the gut is lined with more than 100M neurons, and uses protein, vitamins, and minerals, to produce approximately 95% of the body’s serotonin; and (4) the more than 100T healthy bacteria, which comprise what is referred to as the gut microbiome, improve nutrient absorption, activate neural pathways between the gut and brain, and greatly influence gut serotonin production. Since poor nutrition directly impacts the gut microbiome, serotonin production, and the brain, an unhappy intestinal tract made dysfunctional by the wrong ingested foods can yield general unhappiness. Many studies have shown that greatly decreasing or eliminating all sugar sources, caffeine, and alcohol, greatly supports mood enhancement. Maintaining a healthy plant-based/Mediterranean diet, low in conventional processed foods and high in water intake (generally, 64 ounces, up to half one’s weight in ounces), is also important. In addition, since scientific evidence has established for over 65 years a firm link between food sensitivities /allergies and depression, it makes sense to use an elimination diet to test the impact of common allergens such as gluten, dairy, soy, corn, nuts, and other lectin-rich foods. 2. Anti-Depressant Nutritional Supplements 5-HTP: The body converts the amino acid L-tryptophan to 5-HTP, which it then converts to serotonin. Multiple doubleblind studies have proven 5-HTP to be as effective as SSRIs and tricyclic antidepressants, better tolerated, associated with fewer and milder side effects (most

commonly mild nausea), and much less expensive. 5-HTP works best at a dose of 150-300mg/day and with longer term use, and some may need to wait two months to see results. Traditional guidance maintains that 5-HTP should not be combined with antidepressants, and should be checked for interactions with other prescription drugs and OTCs. Fish Oil/Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (O3EFAs): Some studies and meta-analyses have linked depression with low dietary intake of O3EFAs (EPA and DHA), in part due to their anti-inflammatory properties. The link is also considered to stem from the dependence of brain function on proper cell membrane fluidity and function, both of which are compromised by EFA deficiency. Studies have proven that the physical properties of brain cell membranes directly impact neurotransmitter synthesis, uptake and function, and signal transmission. O3FAs, in combination with antidepressants, may be more effective than antidepressants alone.

Hemp/CBD Oil: Cannabidiol is a nonintoxicating constituent of Cannabis sativa. Its efficacy, and exactly how it works within the body and impacts the endocannabinoid system, is still being researched. One animal study demonstrated that CBD induces antidepressant effects comparable to those of imipramine (Tofranil®), a tricyclic antidepressant. A second mouse study concluded that “CBD could represent a novel fast antidepressant drug.” Multivitamin & Mineral: Scientific evidence soundly supports the negative impact of B-vitamin deficiencies on the production of brain chemicals that affect mood. In particular, the body uses vitamin B6 and B12 to produce serotonin and dopamine. Folate supports serotonin production regulation and production, and its supplementation has been shown to improve response to antidepressants. Vitamin B-5 can increase the body’s ability to synthesize norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Deficiencies in magnesium, zinc and selenium have been tied to depression, and chromium helps serotonin to work properly.

Saffron: Multiple studies of human subjects with mild-to-moderate depression have proven both the stigma and petals of saffron to be effective antidepressants, and even as effective as Prozac® and Tofranil®, without side effects. Saint John’s Wort (Standardized for Hypericin): The results of over 30 doubleblind randomized clinical trials indicate that Saint John’s Wort works better than a placebo, and is as effective as antidepressants for mild-to-moderate depression, with fewer side effects. It can take 4-6 weeks for this herb to take full effect, and it can interfere with the effectiveness of certain prescription and OTC drugs (antidepressants, oral contraceptives). It is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women, children, or those with bipolar disorder, or liver or kidney disease. Vitamin D3: The greater the vitamin D deficiency, the more effectively will supplementation improve mood. Michael Holick, MD, PhD, a renowned vitamin D researcher, maintained that animal studies have demonstrated that vitamin D will elevate mood by increasing brain serotonin levels. The normal range for vitamin D is 30-74ng/ mL, with the recommended level around 50 ng/mL. Any levels below 20 ng/mL are considered serious deficiency states. Many practitioners recommend a minimum of 1,000-2,000iu of Vitamin D3 for general health, but 5,000iu is the minimum that can boost and maintain mood. While limited space precludes full discussion of lavender, SAM-e, and ginkgo biloba extract, scientific studies fully support their efficacy as natural antidepressants in those suffering mild-tomoderate depression. Monetize Your Mission …Through Marketing Your Solutions By Robin Clare, MBA ost holistic business owners dread knowing their financial position and as a result, your level of abundance is directly impacted. This month’s column is dedicated to inspiring you to know your numbers and clearly understand your financial picture. When this important information is clearly defined, you consciously raise your manifesting vibration.

M

Know Your Impact “Success is measured by impact, impact is rewarded with abundance, abundance is defined by you.” This is a quote by yours truly. These wise words came to me when I was struggling with how to measure success in my own business. I realized that abundance for me was not all about money, it was also about freedom to work from home and to enjoy my personal life. For most, money is a clear indicator of the impact that you are making in your work. Climb the Grid In the energetics of money, there is an important tool called the Wealth Grid. The grid clearly displays the correlation between what you are willing to charge for your work and the caliber of the clients that you attract in. The more you value your work (and charge appropriately), you will attract in clients who are more willing to invest in your solutions. This results in more impact for your clients and more abundance for you. Pay Yourself First In the book, Profit First by Michael Michalowicz, he clearly states that you should take out your profit before you pay your bills. The traditional thinking is income less expenses = profit. Michael suggests we change our thinking to income less profit = expenses. What “paying yourself first” requires is a clear understanding of your expenses and potentially making deals with your vendors to lower your expenses. It also gives you built in discipline to stop spending too much. Pay All Your Bills A wealth coach once told me to set up checks for all my monthly bills on the first day of the month. Even if the check was not

set to go out until the 15th of the month, I have let the Universe know that I needed to receive at least $x amount of funds during the month to cover my expenses. If I can manifest more $, even better! This suggestion takes courage and keeping an eye on your checking account balance. It is not a set it and forget it model! Don’t Waste Cash Cash in hand in your business can be so seductive. It cries out to you, “Buy something for yourself, you deserve it.” Yes, just another book from Amazon! Yes, another workshop! Yes, go out to lunch more often! It’s so easy to rationalize taking the cash and spending it – who will know? The right question is - do you need the cash to meet your financial obligations in your business? Bank Balance Blunders Your bank balance is not a true reflection of your financial position. Ideally, you are reconciling your bank account each month. If you are not, then a common mistake is not leaving enough money in your account to cover checks that have not been cashed. It is also important to have a profit and loss statement that you can review each month. The quickest way to do that is to manage your finances in a software system like Quicken or QuickBooks. Your Financial Story When you review your business financials, what are they saying to you? A

simple way to hear your financial story, is to calculate your expense items as a percentage of your revenue. This will tell you if your expenses are reasonable or too high. On the flip side, if your expenses are mostly fixed (meaning they do not fluctuate), then you will know how much more you need to increase your sales to first pay yourself and then pay your expenses. Bottom Line The Universe is made of energy and each of its components has a unique vibration. This means that you, your business, your clients and your money each are energy and have a unique vibration. When you learn to honor and integrate your unique components into a lean, mean vibrating machine, you will have the abundance you deserve. Let’s work together on raising your financial vibration! Why Do We Sleep?

W

hy do we sleep? It is a dangerous activity from the perspective of evolution. You are very vulnerable to predators and other dangers. So, what is the reason? Most animals do not sleep or do so for short periods of time. I believe it is to give the brain an opportunity to present us with the wisdom it can only communicate through images when our intellect is stilled but we can still be aware and learn from stories which are truer than the truth.

be as accurate about the future but they live longer than pessimists. I was brought up to expect problems would redirect me to something better in my life. Charcoal under pressure becomes a diamond. One can keep failing until you fail up. So, create the image you want and focus on it.

If you really want to communicate with yourself and collective consciousness then you have to do it through dreams and symbols. Images are the universal language. Our myths have the same themes no matter what their cultural, mystical or theological source is. By working with dreams and drawings the deeper personal and collective truths comes forward unobstructed by ego, consciousness and the supposedly all-knowing intellect we are so used to relying upon.

2. Describe your feelings or any physical problems and then ask yourself how the words fit your life. Then resolve the problems in your life that you are now aware are affecting your mind and body’s health and wellbeing.

The body also has its ways of communicating. One is through feelings which people become very good at denying. Our lives are stored within us and this is verified by the memories carried within organs which are transplanted from one person to another. Dreams can tell us of disease states or wellness which exist within us and the best treatment options too. When we deny our feelings our body can communicate through dream images. Sadly, we too often deny the true meaning of the dream. Most physicians are totally unaware of this source of therapeutic wisdom. The body also responds to images. Picture a pleasant scene or recall a humorous event and your body will respond. Perform a part in a play and your immune function and stress hormones will change depending upon the role played. If a comedy they are enhanced and if a tragedy they are adversely affected. This has been verified in actors. So, act as if you are the person you want to be. See what you want to see happening and talk to your body with words and images. Worry is negative or destructive imaging. Nothing is solved by worrying, by seeing the worst outcome, but much is done which adversely affects one’s will and ability to live. Optimists may not 42

1. Keep a pad and pencil next to your bed and record your dreams. Review them and discuss them with people who can help you find the meaning and message in the dreams.

3. Think about how a failure or problem redirected your life and directed you to something beneficial. 4. Spend time walking through a park or along the beach and let nature heal you. 5.
