PUBLISHER'SLETTER

T

ime management is one of the hardest skills to master, especially in today’s world where we are constantly bombarded by things that distract us from the tasks at hand. But it is an essential technique that we need to maintain control over if we want to be successful in any endeavor. Without superior time management skills, we will waste countless hours with distractions and it will take us much longer to accomplish any goals we’ve set forth. Not to mention the fact that poor time management can lead to a lack of time to spend with family and friends or to participate in leisure activities, sports or hobbies. It is amazing how quickly time flies by and it seems to go even faster if we do not have control over how we spend our time. Much of the problem lies in drawing the line between work and leisure time. In a recent coaching study, I read that couples spend an average of 12 minutes a day talking to each other and only 40 minutes a week playing with their children. The average American works 20% more today than in 1973 and has 32% less free time per week. What was really disturbing was that the study reported that 48% of 4,000 male executives saw their lives as empty and meaningless despite years of professional striving. What this tells me is that we are a nation of people with inadequate time management skills that are slowly working themselves to death. Time management is especially a concern for many women as we try to balance home, work and personal lives. So, as we approach another Mother’s Day, and whether you are a Mom or not, please try to take some time for yourself. Here are some simple tips to help you stay focused and improve your time management skills:

1. Find time each day to meditate and be still. Even if it’s only a five-minute walk outdoors in nature or five minutes in a quiet space in your home. 2. Find one thing you can do each day for thirty minutes to an hour to relieve stress. It could be exercise, yoga, listening to music, soaking in the tub, reading a book or whatever works for you. 3. At least once a year, go on a silent retreat. Time will come to a standstill during this time. 4. Take time at the beginning of each week to organize and plan your goals and tasks for the week. A Sunday afternoon or evening can be perfect for this and starting the week off organized will do wonders in reducing your stress. 5. Start saying “NO” to what you don’t want to do and “YES” to things you do want to do. And stop feeling guilty about either. Life is short and time is speeding up, stop doing things you don’t like to do because you feel obligated or think you have to do them. In celebration of Mother’s Day, Natural Nutmeg is focusing on all things relating to the women in our lives. Bring your mom, sister or BFF to a farm dinner this summer or one of the amazing workshops we’re featuring this month. Check out the fantastic offerings we have in this issue – everything from spas to life coaching to healthy eating! Pictured above is me and my beautiful mom at the Madison Beach Hotel last summer. THE BUZZ Heal, Stretch, and Decompress with West Hartford Yoga’s Massage and Healing Arts Services

• Deep tissue massage: uses deep pressure to relieve stress, scar tissue, and muscle tension; valuable for anyone physically active.

Yoga is about finding balance. Asana and savasana. Inhale and exhale. Backbends and forward folds. Once you leave the studio, however, the demands of work, family, and life in general can make it challenging to maintain that balance. One way to complement and sustain the benefits of yoga while staving off pain, stress, and anxiety is through regular massage.

• Prenatal massage: helps alleviate swelling and aching muscles, and provides special care to the expecting mother.

Although massage can be essential in achieving optimum wellness, it is often considered a luxury rather than a necessity. Massage may feel luxurious, but its long-term benefits are far greater: • Reduces low-back pain, chronic pain, headache frequency, and muscle tension. • Increases oxygen levels, which improves memory and promotes healthier skin. • Increases endorphins and reduces cortisol to positively combat stress, anxiety, and depression. And these are only a few benefits! Massage can also reduce inflammation, improve sleep, help prevent injuries, and manage the side effects of cancer treatment. Now that you know why to get a massage, how do you choose which treatment is right for you? It’s important to know what you’re looking for specifically — pain management, stress relief, treatment for a medical condition, or simple relaxation. Different modalities will yield different results. West Hartford Yoga (WHY) offers a diverse array of massage and healing arts services to help enhance your yoga practice, heal your body, and maintain a sense of well-being. They include: • Swedish massage: long, flowing strokes help ease tension and stress, creating an overall feeling of deep relaxation.

• Hot stone massage: smooth, warm stones are used to increase muscle relaxation and blood flow, and reduce overall fatigue.

• WHY signature massage: a custom massage combining deep tissue, Swedish, myofascial release, and energy work. • Acupuncture: an ancient healing modality that promotes wellness, helps prevent illness, and supports the treatment of various medical conditions. • Yoga therapy: a blend of yoga postures, breath work, and physical therapy techniques to improve body and mind functionality. • Chiropractic: restores normal movement to the spine and extremities in order to relieve stress and pressure on the muscles, ligaments, and nerves. • Nutritional holistic consultations: optimizes health, boosts immunity, and increases energy while helping with a wide variety of health-related issues, from food allergies to osteoporosis. • Craniosacral therapy: a gentle, hands-on approach for balancing structures of the central nervous system that can affect all areas of the body. If you’re searching for balance, a respite from chronic pain, or simply an opportunity to unwind, scheduling regular massage (or other healing arts) sessions might be exactly what you need. Nutmeg “Nuggets” A New Way of Healing with Frequency Specific Microcurrent

F

requency specific microcurrent (FSM) increases the body’s ability to heal and repair itself. The different tissues and organs of the body have very specific frequencies associated with them. When the body is compromised in any way; through injury, stress, or inflammation, the frequency of that particular tissue becomes modified and can no longer function optimally. Since the workings of the human body are electrically driven, it makes sense that a device which puts out micro-amperage (the exact same current that the body produces in its cells) at normal frequencies that can be changed as needed depending on the dysfunctional tissue to be treated, can help those tissues and organs to heal. Current research demonstrates that microcurrent treatments can increase energy production in the various damaged cells of the body by 500%. It is this increase in energy within the cells that can aid the body in healing by restoring the mismatched frequency back to normal. The electricity made inside our cells provides the power for the body. When microcurrent is applied to the body at a specific frequency (speed), it can have positive effects on the condition of tissues and organs. In this manner, FSM can help the body recuperate, promote pain relief, relax muscles, dissolve scar tissue and improve healing, all at an accelerated rate. Furthermore, we have seen positive responses after FSM treatments such as decreased nerve and muscle pain in conditions like shingles and diabetic neuropathy and improved wellbeing in some of our patients with fibromyalgia, headaches, PTSD and restless leg syndrome. We have also noted improved function in patients with visceral-referred pain from kidney stones, irritable bowel syndrome and asthma. We have even observed diminished inflammation and scar tissue in individuals with arthritis, frozen shoulder, bone fractures and lymphedema. The FSM treatment is non-invasive, usually the recipient feels nothing at all due to the fact that the current is so low (millionths of an ampere). A positive common side effect patients have noted is improved ability to sleep longer and deeper. Minor side effects such as fatigue, drowsiness, and nausea can mostly be avoided with proper hydration; 1-2 quarts of water 2 hours prior to treatment with FSM. FSM is not to be used on pregnant women, individuals with cancer or patients with implanted devices. For further reading we recommend, “The Resonance Effect” by Carolyn McMakin MA, DC. Susan Yarett, ND is a licensed naturopathic physician in Connecticut. She practices at Eclectic Naturopathic Medical Center in Newington, CT (860-665-7130) and at Paragon Naturopathic Family Care in Stamford, CT (203-832-6333). You Put The “Lyme” in the Coconut and Drink It All Up…

E

ven though it’s a play on words, we chose a classic song to demonstrate the importance of proper nutrition in the treatment of Lyme disease. There are many treatment modalities for Lyme disease, however, proper nutrition needs to be the foundation of any treatment protocol for Lyme disease. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans via the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Symptoms include fever, inflammation, fatigue, and a characteristic skin-rash called erythema migrans. Lyme disease is typically treated with antibiotics; however these antibiotics can be harsh on the immune system. Strong antibiotics used to treat Lyme disease raise yeast levels in the body which in turn lower the body’s immune system. Diet plays an enormous role in the level of inflammation that’s present within your body. Inflammation triggers changes in your immune, endocrine and central nervous systems which make symptoms worse. Medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is a therapeutic and personable approach to treating medical conditions and their associated symptoms via the use of a specifically tailored diet devised and monitored by a dietitian-nutritionist. As part of the MNT process, the dietitiannutritionist will assess an individual’s nutritional status, which may include analysis of current biochemical markers. The MNT process is typically covered by most insurance plans. A diet rich in antiinflammatory foods are essential, such as: coconut, blueberries, leafy greens and turmeric to name a few. A nutrient-rich diet can boost your immune system to work to the best of its ability, clearing up symptoms of Lyme disease and fighting off further complications. For more information on Lyme disease/inflammation or to schedule an appointment contact Bordeaux Nutrition at 860-757-3474 or info@bordeauxnutrition.com. See ad on this page.

Wolfspirit Acupuncture Ancient Healing with a Modern Approach

From Menses to Menopause: Diagnosing & Treating Hormone Imbalances

H

ormone imbalances can wreak havoc on your entire body. These imbalances often manifest into painful periods, infertility, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and menopause. The common denominator in these conditions is often irregular menses. Unfortunately, these issues are quite common, but Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) diagnose and effectively treat these conditions. The first step is to complete a comprehensive blood panel to establish a baseline of the hormonal picture. Along with estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, evaluation of the adrenal hormones DHEA and cortisol help to uncover the root cause of imbalances. It is common practice for NDs to assess complete health history and disease progression. In this process, sleep quality and quantity cannot be overlooked, along with enforcing stress reduction practices and incorporating nutrition into treatment protocols. Lastly, toxins present in the environment and personal care items cause concern for their role as endocrine disruptors. Many patients are seeking natural-based hormone replacement therapy (HRT) due to fears stemming from medication side effects and cancer risks. NDs use pharmaceutical grade supplements to ensure purity and quality ingredients. More commonly used supplements include Vitamin D and zinc, herbs like vitex and black cohosh and if necessary, vaginal suppositories. NDs create individualized protocols based on a patient’s genetic predisposition and medical history. We can minimize symptoms and age gracefully, without artificially revving up our hormone levels. Countless NDs, like myself, utilize Chinese medicine/acupuncture, yoga and mindfulness techniques to complement our protocols. These practices are emerging in a Western context because they have proven beneficial for thousands of years and research has confirmed their efficacy. If you are suffering with any of the aforementioned conditions, consult an ND to support you throughout all of the beautiful phases of life – from menses to menopause. Submitted by Jennifer C. Pierre, ND, MPH ProNatural Physicians Group in Berlin. 860-829-0707. For more information on these topics, visit http://www.pronaturalphysicians.com. See ad on page 9.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Experience the Crystal Bed

T

he concept of the Crystal Bed, also called crystal bath therapy, was channeled through John of God. It was developed for practical use and incorporated as an important modality at "the Casa Dom Inacio in Brazil." The Crystal Beds are for rejuvenation, alignment and balancing of our energy fields.

A Crystal Bed has 7 extremely clear and highly polished Vogel cut quartz crystals suspended approximately 12 inches above the client lying on a massage table. Each crystal is aligned above one of the seven chakras. Colored lights, chosen to match the vibrational frequency of chakra colors, radiate light and energy through the crystals to each chakra, and shine on and off in certain rhythms to cleanse, balance, and align your energies. The individual receiving the session is dressed totally in white and rests face up with eyes closed while listening to music. Each and every person who receives a Crystal Bed treatment reports a different effect, each experience being relevant and unique to his/her own condition, needs, and level of awareness.

DONʼT LET FEAR KEEP YOU FROM BETTER HEALTH...

The ABC’s of Accident And Injury: The Importance of an Integrated Healthcare Approach

Experience Anxiety-free O Sedation Dentistry.

ver thirty years of experience in various therapeutic capacities has afforded me the opportunity to see a trend that compromises the health and wellness of many people. Areas of the body are treated without consideration or regard for the whole person. This is illustrated no better than in the occurrence of accident or injury.

Oral health is directly related to your overall body health. However, many people avoid dental visits due to fear.

Countless people have fallen down stairs, slipped on ice or been in motor vehicle accidents. Often, diagnostic procedures and treatment are directed towards the “squeaky wheel”…the body part that hurts. I often ask my clients, “so where was the rest of your body when your knee fell down the stairs?” The problem is the whole body contributes to the pain and dysfunction of any one part. When this body part is ignored during treatment, the injury is only temporarily better or struggles to get better at all. I see many people stuck in dysfunctional cycles which contribute to frustration, hopelessness and depression. The “ABC’s to an integrated treatment approach addresses all the physical and emotional strain patterns AT the time of the accident, BEFORE the accident and the Cumulative, Combined and Compensatory events after the accident.

There are many possible physical injuries that occur at the time of an accident. Some of these injuries are obvious and are usually treated appropriately. However, there are many other strain patterns that fly below the radar. An example seen is almost all accidents and injuries involve physical force. Often times the mechanical force moves through the body and is dissipated immediately. There are other times when the force gets lodged in the tissues and it can wreak havoc on the ease of the body for a very long time. An example of this force is a torsion force from a car accident in a belted passenger. When the car stops abruptly, the seat belt locks and a rotation happens in the spine and rib cage. This force creates a strain pattern the body has to work around. It creates a “thud” in the body blocking fluidity. There are also plenty of possible sprains, strains, muscle spasms that can occur. And, many restrictions in the connective tissue and fascia that can create many problems down the road and prevent full recovery now. Up to a nano second before impact, there already were strain patterns that existed from all the bumps and bruises along the way. Remember that anything that happens to the body that is not Naturopathic Medicine resolved, stays in the body. Some of these strain Acupuncture patterns lie dormant and others are actively Colon Hydrotherapy creating symptoms. When there is an accident Traditional Chinese Medicine or injury, all the strain patterns that happen at Family Medicine the time of the accident are layered on top of Naturopathic Oncology everything that existed in the body. Delectable Dinners on the Farm with DORO Restaurant Group

By Diane Hayden, PhD

O

ne of my favorite things to do in the summer and early fall is head to a dinner on the farm. Luckily, right here in Connecticut we have plenty of opportunities to do so as there are more and more restaurant groups partnering with local farms to showcase culinary skills and local foods. I was so excited to attend the DORO Restaurant Group’s September farm dinner at Sub Edge Farm in Farmington – being a big fan of Treva and all of Dorjan Puka’s restaurants, I knew it would be phenomenal. Every dinner begins with a farm tour by the owners of Sub Edge Farm, Rodger and Isabelle Phillips. Not only did we get to do a

14

farm tour, but there were beverage tastings, and a six-course feast crafted by Chef Scott Miller. Born and raised in Albania, Chef Puka moved to Connecticut in 1998 seeking new experiences and opportunities. Leveraging his culinary talent and strong work ethic, Puka worked his way up in various kitchens in the region including Vito’s by the Park, Max’s Oyster Bar and Max’s Tavern in Springfield, Massachusetts. In December of 2010, Puka opened his first solo venture, Treva Restaurant & Bar, an Italian concept in West Hartford. The restaurant was unlike anything in the area and garnered great reviews from The Hartford Courant, Connecti-

cut Magazine and The New York Times. And in the last four years, Puka has successfully opened 3 more restaurants: Àvert Brasserie and Zohara in West Hartford and Artisanal Burger Company in Manchester. Raised in Woodbridge, Connecticut, Chef Scott Miller worked his way through the kitchens of some of Connecticut’s finest restaurants and country clubs. Miller is the pioneer of the Farm to Table movement in our area, along with the Chefs of the DORO Restaurant Group. Miller started the awardwinning Max’s Chef to Farm Program in 2009 and now has reunited with Chef Puka as Chief Operating Officer and Partner of DORO Restaurant group. It’s not a coincidence that Puka and Miller chose Sub Edge Farm to partner with as Sub Edge has many things in common with the DORO Restaurant Group including a commitment to using sustainable farming and business practices. Each dinner is cooked from scratch and showcases that day’s best produce. Because the ingredients are sourced daily from local farmers, ranchers and fisherman, each menu is different and a delightful surprise. In my opinion, there’s something exciting about not knowing what your meal is going to be! But, let’s get to the amazing food! We started with a fantastic cocktail hour of Salumi & Formaggi including speck, finocchiona, cacao di tartuffo, brillo di vino and cambozola. In addition, we were treated to passed hors d’oeuvres of sweet and spicy pepper arancini, honey pork belly, watermelon pickles and candied balsamic tomato tart. Mike, the beverage director, whipped up a thirst-quenching farm cocktail with cynar, amaro Montenegro, pavan, mint, honey, lime and gingerbeer.

Our first course was a refreshing tomato gazpacho with fried kale and pesto crème fraiche. Next came a delicious warm collard green salad with peaches, goat cheese and roasted pepper vinaigrette. The pasta fresco was a braised veal gnocchi with rainbow chard, cherry tomato and herb breadcrumb. Our entrée – to die for - crispy porchetta with truffle onion puree and herb potatoes. Also, served family style at the table was a tomato and onion salad, fresh corn polenta and roasted peppers. And, of course we can’t forget dessert – a wonderful sweet basil panna cotta with watermelon – light and refreshing to end the meal. Everything was unbelievably delicious. But considering almost all of the ingredients were picked that day – how could it not be! I highly encourage checking out these dinners, not only for the amazing meal you will have, but for the learning experience and most importantly to support these Chefs and Farmers who are truly passionate about what they do. These are the farm dinner dates planned for the 2018 season at Sub Edge Farm in Farmington. and immune boosting herbs such as Smilax, Uncaria, Andrographis, Dipsacus, Echinacea, Lomatium and Astragalus. What Does the Future Hold for Diagnosing and Treating Lyme? By Robert M. Murphy RN, ND

I

t’s that time of year where we all need to become vigilant about Deer Ticks (Ixodes scapularis), which are emerging from their winter hibernation and crawling about looking to latch on to warm-blooded creatures like white footed mice, chipmunks, birds, white tailed deer, cats, dogs and humans. Lyme coinfections such as Erlichiosis, Babesiosis and Bartonella may also be transmitted. The CT Department of Health reports 3,000 cases to the CDC, but CDC estimates the rate to be ten times that. Of course, with any illness, prevention is key. Measures include daily tick checks of your skin; socks over pants with outdoor activities; long sleeves with rubber bands or elastic at the cuff; caution around property borders, stone walls and hedges when doing yard work or gardening; checking outdoor cats and dogs for ticks; locating play scapes away from the borders of your property; and spraying of properties in areas of high infestation (naturally derived spraying from licensed contractors are available). Daily skin checks are quite important, as removal of deer ticks less than 24 hours after attachment results in near zero risk of infection. Even 36-48 hours of attachment give a low probability of infection. Most people in the Northeast are 3.5w x 3.375h familiar with the symptoms of Lyme disease,

which include fever, chills, stiff neck, circular or oval bullseye rash, fatigue, headache and musculoskeletal pain. Lyme is a great mimicker of other diseases and 30% or more people will not develop the characteristic Chronic Erythema Migrans (CEM) rash. Diagnosis should primarily be done by history and clinical presentation. Unfortunately, laboratory diagnosis is far from perfect and lab tests are often done too early before the onset of detectable antibody formation in the serum. Standard investigation involves a two-step utilization of first Enzyme immune assay (EIA) and then reflex to IGM/IGG immunoblot testing. There are also urine tests which look for spirochete DNA after antibiotic provocation and indirect blood tests which detect activated T-cells responding to Lyme spirochetes. While the existence of Chronic Lyme Disease is a very controversial concept debated between the allopathic infectious disease specialists and providers like Lyme literate MDs and Naturopathic Physicians, I believe that there are many individuals whose diagnoses are missed and go on to develop Chronic Lyme Disease. Those individuals can develop chronic joint pain, headaches, fatigue, cognitive difficulties and in some cases psychosis and neurological symptoms that mimic MS.

Standard allopathic treatment involves administration of one antibiotic, usually doxycycline or amoxicillin for 10 days to 3 weeks. Naturopathic Physicians acknowledge that Lyme disease, especially Chronic Lyme Disease is a systemic illness affecting the skin, joints, cardiovascular system and central nervous system, and thus requires a holistic approach. In my practice, I utilize a variety of anti-spirochetal

One could also consider adding Resveratrol, a natural bioflavonoid found in grape skins. Naturopathic Physicians also take into consideration the effects of environmental chemicals and heavy metals which can suppress the immune system, and use herbs that stimulate liver function like milk thistle, dandelion root and burdock root. Hydrotherapy such as Infrared sauna followed by a cold sheet/wool blanket wrap stimulates circulation, immune function and heavy metal detoxification, all of which can potentially aid the patient with Chronic Lyme disease. Prayer and meditation can also support immune function. I have had both acute and chronic cases of Lyme Disease which have responded to the above treatments, with and without the concomitant use of antibiotics. Each case is individual, and adjustments need to be made according to the response, but the common thread in treating Chronic Lyme is that it can take time; up to 6-9 months to clear symptoms. So, what does the future hold for diagnosing and treating Lyme Disease? We are in need of affordable laboratory tests which can accurately and quickly diagnose both acute and chronic Lyme Disease, so that providers can know when to treat and judge treatment effectiveness. We need more effective antibiotics and antispirochetal botanical extracts. One such herb which I studied at a recent Ethnobotany conference in Jamaica is Achyranthes aspera (Devils ass-whip), which based on its indications and actions may also be potentially very beneficial in Lyme formulas. One can hope that the future will bring much improved diagnosis and treatment, including Naturopathic Medical care, for this endemic, vexing and often disabling disease. Robert M. Murphy RN, ND maintains a private practice at the Center for Natural Medicine, LLC, Watertown, CT and is an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine. What Lyme Disease Does to Our Immune System By Tonya Pasternak, ND

O

ur bodies are incredibly resilient and capable of fighting microbes, which are constantly bombarding us. We can ward off harmful bacteria, viruses, and even parasites and typically bounce back with relative ease. However, many people are keenly aware that this isn't always the case with Lyme disease. People can be infected with the borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria responsible for Lyme, and remain ill despite standard treatment. When a holistic approach is taken, supporting the entire body, people are more likely to overcome the infection and reestablish health.

Forms of Borrelia Burgdorferi When exposed to an infection, our immune system initiates a response to begin eliminating the pathogen from our bodies. This is our primary form of defense. There are times however when the body’s immune system isn't adequate enough to clear an infection on its own. It is in these situations antibiotics are helpful. Lyme disease is unique in the sense that the bacterium causing the infection is able to protect itself from our immune system as well as from antibiotics. This is one reason why the infection is difficult to fully eradi-

cate. There are a few ways in which the bacteria are able to do this. The first way is due to the design of the bacterium. The bacteria are shaped like a corkscrew, which allows them to spiral their way out of the bloodstream and into the tissue space. In doing so, it is more difficult for both the immune system and antibiotic medications to clear the infection. The second manner in which Lyme bacteria evade the immune system and antibiotics is by changing their shape. Our immune system is able to rid pathogens by recognizing their external shape and then creating antibodies to them. However, this particular bacterium is able to morph into three different forms, known as the cyst form, l-form, and spirochete form. This trait allows the bacteria to actively disguise themselves for their own protection, allowing them to avoid our natural defense system as well as medications. Biofilms

Botanical Therapy + Naturopathic Wellness Center

When bacteria float freely through the blood stream it is relatively easy for the immune system or antibiotics to kill them. However, bacteria can also form biofilms, which is another protective mechanism for survival. Biofilms are thick aggregations of individual bacteria that are then covered by a slime-like matrix. This film makes the bacteria more resistant and thus harder to treat. When antibiotics come in contact with this defense mechanism, the antibiotics skim over the surface of the film killing only the top layers. In this situation people can start to feel better, however when antibiotics are discontinued the infection starts to manifest itself again and symptoms return. Natural agents such as herbal medicines and enzymes are effective ways to break up films. These natural agents should be used in conjunction with either antibiotics or natural antimicrobial therapies to create a more functional regimen and increase the effectiveness of the therapy.

Natural Nutmeg - May/June 2018

Die-Off Reactions/Binders Many symptoms caused by Lyme are driven by inflammation. These symptoms include headaches, joint pain, fatigue and even cognitive decline. The necessary use of antimicrobial agents causes inflammatory levels to spike up due to the bacteria dying off. When this happens people commonly experience an increase in symptoms. This is known as the herxheimer reaction, or die-off reaction. In a way when a person experiences this it is a good sign because it shows the treatment is working. However, when people already feel ill it is obviously not ideal for symptoms to worsen. In fact, this can be a cause for people being unable to complete a full treatment protocol. There are ways in which the herxheimer symptoms can be minimized. Since it is due to the release of inflammatory chemicals, controlling these levels is an effective way to buffer such reactions. This is often done through the use of binders. Binders are agents taken orally that soak up inflammatory chemicals and promote their excretion from the body. This helps bring inflammation levels down so people have fewer declines from treatment. Whole Body Approach Lyme disease is a complicated infection requiring a multidimensional approach for treatment. There are numerous ways to kill the bacteria such as antibiotics or natural antibacterial agents. However, in order to have the best chance of recovery, care needs to be taken to help the "killing agents" be as effective as possible. Comprehensive therapies that include targeting biofilms and the various forms of the bacteria greatly enhance successful treatment. Additionally, it is important to take the whole body into consideration rather than treating the infection as an isolated entity. This means a person’s overall health should be optimized, with a focus on good nutrition, sleep habits, stress reduction and symptomatic support. Incorporating natural and holistic treatments for Lyme disease greatly contributes to full recovery.

Rejuvenate Aging Skin… Safe and Naturally By Diane Hayden, PhD

L

ook no further than the nonsurgical face lift which uses microcurrent technology. Supported by over 30 years of research, microcurrent produces electrical signals like those naturally occurring when the body is repairing damaged tissue and has been shown to stimulate cell growth and rejuvenate aging skin. It is truly a safer alternative to riskier and invasive procedures like Botox or plastic surgery. As we age, our skin gets thinner and less elastic, facial muscles weaken and there is reduced production of collagen and elastin. Studies on microcurrent therapy indicate a 14% increase in the production of natural collagen, a 48% increase in natural elastin production, and a 38% increase in blood circulation over the course of 20 days. In damaged or aging cells, the membrane channels become paralyzed, preventing nutrients from entering the cell and toxic waste from being excreted. Microcurrent erases this “memory” from the cell and opens the cellular membrane to allow nutrients in and waste out.

Melissa Martin Wallace, esthetician and owner of Anew You Skincare in Avon, has been using microcurrent therapy for everything from treating acne to wrinkles. “In my clients, I’ve seen a reduction in crow’s feet, a softening of wrinkles and lines, and greater definition along the cheekbones and jaw line. It’s a great alternative to invasive procedures for skin rejuvenation and it definitely works. We refer to the treatment as our non-surgical face lift.” The treatment sends safe, painless impulses to the muscles in your face and neck which, in essence, “re-educate” the muscles and restores them back almost to their original shape. The visible results are quite dramatic and the face and neck are lifted and toned back to a much more youthful appearance. At the same time, the microcurrents improve circulation to your skin which stimulates production of collagen, improves tone and texture, and improves or eliminates fine lines. “One of the things that makes the treatment so popular is that people see visible results after just a single treatment,” Melissa explains. “This gives ‘instant gratification’ which is seen so rarely

as a result of other anti-aging products or techniques.” This procedure is preventative for younger clients and rejuvenating for mature clients. The treatment delivers a variety of benefits to clients who wish to attain a healthier and younger looking appearance including; improving muscle tone in face and neck, lifting jowls and eyebrows, skin exfoliation, reducing and eliminating fine lines and wrinkles, improving facial circulation and enhancing natural collagen and elastin production. So what is a treatment like? After one, I was hooked. It was so relaxing I might have fallen asleep had I not been asking Melissa a million questions for this article. With her hands, she contours and sculpts the face as the microcurrent delivers a stimulus to increase ATP and collagen production which enables the skin and facial muscles to hold their position longer. The procedure starts with the neck on one side of the face, works up along the jaw line, across the cheekbones and then on the forehead. The therapy lasts about an hour and Melissa ends it with a scalp massage which is a nice treat! I immediately noticed a softening of fine lines around my eyes, forehead and frown lines within the first few treatments. The benefits of the treatments are cumulative, which means that the more treatments you have, the more improvement you will see in your face. Melissa recommends a minimum of 4 treatments, however, she says most clients do 6-8 depending on what results they are trying to achieve. After the first series of treatments, the good news is that only a single maintenance treatment is recommended about once every 4-6 months. The facial muscles appear to hold the re-education stimulus that microcurrent therapy delivers for months at a time,

thereby preventing fine lines and wrinkles from reoccurring. Melissa suggests starting treatment in your 30’s and 40’s to help slow the effects of aging and fewer treatments are needed at that age to see results. However, the treatments are effective at any age. Hear what clients have to say! “I have always taken very good care of my skin, but despite my efforts Mother Nature and Father Time were taking their toll. Facial lines started to deepen, skin started to sag, all of the ‘normal’ signs of aging for someone 55! Not wanting to solve this with a knife or needle, I started my mission to research what other options were available. This is when I discovered the ‘nonsurgical face lift’ treatment that Anew You Skin Care & Wellness Center offered. The results were apparent after the first treatment: depth of wrinkles started to decrease, the elasticity was returning and the overall texture of my skin was noticeably improving. Friends and co-workers started commenting on how youthful my skin was looking.” Carmel B, West Hartford Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. Anew You Skincare & Wellness Center, located in Avon, Connecticut, was founded in 2007 by Esthetician Melissa Martin Wallace. Melissa has been in the skincare industry since 2001. Death is the Greatest Illusion of All by James Van Praagh & Dr. Diane Hayden

I

had the pleasure of sitting down with James Van Praagh last month to talk with him about life, death, mediumship and the state of our world today. James has brought a mind-full awareness to the subject of “communication with the dead” into the public psyche for the past thirty years. James is known as a “survival evidence medium,” meaning that he provides evidential proof of life after death via detailed messages from the spiritual realms. I’ve also been lucky enough to attend one of his live events and it was absolutely amazing to see him in action. He’ll be at the Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield Connecticut on May 17th for an Evening of Spirit Messages that you won’t want to miss! DH: I think there is a lot of confusion between the terms medium and psychic – can you help clarify that for me? JVP: That is one of the most common questions I am asked! The term “psychic” is often used as a catchall phrase for anyone who works in the paranormal. We know what our five senses are – sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell. But we have another sense that is equally as real as the other five. Often referred to as our sixth sense, psychic ability, or our intuition, is the gut feeling or hunch you have that you cannot logically explain. Everyone is psychic to some degree or another, but not everyone is a medium. A medium is a psychic who has finetuned his or her extrasensory perception and can interface with the spirits in other dimensions. They are able to feel and/or hear thoughts, voices or mental impressions from the spirit world. A medium is able to become completely receptive to the higher frequency or energies on which spirit people vibrate. Mediumship is much more involved than psychicism because a medium is opening him/herself to a discarnate energy. Mediumship itself can be broken down into

22

Natural Nutmeg - May/June 2018

two distinct categories. The first and most common type is mental mediumship, which is how I work with my abilities. I communicate with spirits while fully conscious. As the word mental denotes, this form of mediumship utilizes the mind – the intuitive mind, not the rational or logical part. This type of mental mediumship falls into several distinct types which are described as: Clairsentience – (clear feeling) Perceive information by way of strong, emphatic feelings and emotions from spirit. Clairvoyant – (clear vision) See with the mind’s eye objects, colors, symbols, people, spirits or scenes. These pictures are not visible to the naked eye and usually flash into the medium’s mind. Clairaudient – (clear hearing) Perceive sounds or words from sources broadcasting from a spiritual realm. Clairempathy – (clear emotion) Sense or “feel” within one’s self the attitude or emotions of another person. Clairtangency – (clear touching) This ability is commonly known as Psychometry. By holding an object or touching an area you perceive information about the article or its owner or history through the palms of your hands. In my work I most often utilize the abilities of clairsentience and clairvoyance. In order to attune to the thoughts and feelings of spirit, I raise my vibrations higher through meditation and, in turn, spirit has to lower its vibrations somewhat. The second type of mediumship is physical mediumship and it differs from mental mediumship. In physical mediumship the actually physical body is used to get information from spirit. In mental mediumship only the mind of the medium is utilized. Channeling is a well-known form of physical mediumship. DH: I think that’s a great explanation and helps to differentiate between the two terms. I think people are always surprised

to learn that everyone has the ability to be psychic and even develop mediumship talents. When did you first experience this for yourself? JVP: Yes, everyone has these abilities, but many people have closed themselves off to developing them. I try to educate people how to open themselves through meditation and raising their consciousness so the spirit world can communicate with them. Many people are fearful and operating from a very low vibration which makes it impossible for spirit to make a connection. At my live events, my main goal is to make the experience as comfortable and open as possible because the energy of the audience affects the conditions. I add humor and try to make it fun for attendees so they will relax and just allow events to unfold. As a spiritual teacher, my ultimate goal is to have each individual leave my event as a changed person who now looks at the world and relationships from a place of love and not fear. A man started appearing to me in the corner of my bedroom when I was 3-yearsold. I later found out that this was my grandfather who died before I was born. At 6-years-old I had a vision, while in my first grade class, that my teacher’s son was hit by a car. I ran up to her and told her and she smiled and told me to return to my seat. Within 5 minutes, the teacher was called out of the class by the principal who told her that her son was involved in a car accident but that he was going to be ok. I became very upset because I initially thought that I had caused the accident by seeing this vision, but my teacher (who was obviously very conscious and open) said, “No James, you did not cause the accident. You have a gift and you will help many people.” As I got older, in my early twenties, I went to a medium in Manhattan Beach who told me that I would become a medium as well and that the spirit world was going to be reaching out to me and using me in a few years. Sure enough I started seeing and

communicating with the deceased two years to the day after I saw that medium. DH: What an amazing story! I’ve always wondered if our soul chooses when we will be born, when we will die and what we come here to accomplish – and who we choose to have relationships with? JVP: Definitely! However, there is such a thing as free will. This means that even though you have a “soul blueprint” – which is the choices the soul makes before it incarnates – you can make different decisions and choices once you’re here on Earth. I believe that the soul makes choices to continue its learning and evolvement – you come here to have all kinds of experiences. For example, in one lifetime you may choose to be a mother, in the next you may choose not to have children. In another lifetime you may choose to die young and in the next, live a very long life. You want to experience the opposite of the last lifetime so that you continue to grow and evolve. But the ultimate learning is to learn to live a life based on love and not fear. There is so much fear in the world today – fear instilled from our parents, from society, from cultures and people that we don’t understand – fear of the unknown. We will never solve our world’s problems coming from a place of fear and hate. The two biggest illusions are that we are all separate from one another and that we die. The truth is that we are all the same – we are all one. The soul never dies, it just takes on a different form of consciousness. And ultimately, the one thing we are here to do is to love. 6 Steps for Building Wealth

By Caroline Wetzel

W

hat is the greatest gift you can give the woman you love this Mother's Day? Give her information she can use to set herself up for financial success. The following are six steps she may find helpful for building her wealth. Step 1: Understand Wealth The first step in building wealth is to know what being wealthy entails. Being wealthy is not the same as being rich. There is no specific income level associated with being wealthy. Buying a home in an affluent zip code or wearing certain clothing does not make you wealthy. Being wealthy means understanding what is important to you in life and being able to pay for it. Regardless of how much income you make, when you are wealthy you spend less than you earn, you save regularly, and you manage/pay off debt in calculated ways, according to the benefits you expect to receive over time. When you are wealthy you have control over your finances and confidence that your savings and spending behaviors meet your immediate needs and are setting you up for success over time. Step 2: Desire to be Wealthy While many people may claim that they want to be wealthy, not everyone is ready or willing to take steps necessary to build

wealth for themselves. Building wealth can be tough for many people because it often requires focus, discipline, and deferred gratification. For example, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2016 the average American earning $50,766 a year spent as much as 16% of her income, or $8,000 on "little expenses" like credit card interest ($2,750), coffee ($2,180), and wasted food ($2,115). A person focused on building wealth is sensitive to how all of these “little expenses” today add up to missed savings, investing, and strategic debt management opportunities over time. Consider this fictitious example. If someone buys a $2.95 cup of coffee every day for 5 years, she would spend a total of more than $5,300 on coffee. However, if that same woman invested that $2.95 every day for 5 years in a financial services solution that earned a 6% rate of return, she would have more than $6,300 (before taxes and other investment expenses). The total difference between buying coffee every day for 5 years, or being out $5300, and investing that money every day for 5 years, or having more than $6300, is more than $11,000! Someone committed to building wealth realizes that her financial life is a series of priority calls. Each day she has the power to influence her financial future by carefully considering how both big and seemingly insignificant financial choices affect her, and making thoughtful decisions that positively impact her immediately and over the long term. Step 3: Deal with Debt

Strategic debt management is a critical component to building wealth. Understand that different types of debt exist and pay off high interest debt as quickly as possible. Making choices like auto paying student loans and systematically paying off lower interest debt over time help increase your spending power, positively impact your credit score, and enhance your ability to borrow money in the future. Step 4: Create an Emergency Fund Life is unpredictable. Even the most lucrative, intellectually stimulating jobs can end. The highest quality appliances break. The best made vehicles break down. Protect yourself by having cash equal to six months of expenses or 20% of your salary available for those inevitable surprises that decrease your income, increase your expenses, and/or require prompt unforeseen payments above and beyond your usual spend.

Step 5: Establish Goals Financial goals provide a foundation for building wealth. They offer a vision that you can refer to for perspective as you juggle day to day decisions around how to use your income, consider whether savings strategies serve your existing and anticipated financial needs, and prioritize expenses on an ongoing basis. Think of your financial goals as your list of what you want to do with your money over time. Categorize your goals into “Needs”, “Wants”, and “Wishes” for enhanced clarity around what expenses in life you must pay in order to survive as opposed to which expenses you choose to pay as part of experiencing a quality of life you desire. Step 6: Invest for Growth Once you mentally understand what being wealthy is all about and have in place savings and spending behaviors that align with your goals, consider working with a Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) to discuss your risk tolerance and implement investment strategies to grow your money over time. With more people living into their 80s and 90s, fewer employers offering comprehensive pension plans throughout

retirement, and expenses like healthcare rising rapidly, it is more important than ever to make informed investment decisions designed to accumulate more wealth for your use over your lifetime. Natural Pest Deterrents for Your Garden By Meredith Sorensen

B

ehind the scenes even zen-like, productive gardens can feel like a battle zone. Slugs are invading from the south! Deer are munching on the north perimeter! Mosquitoes are buzzing straight towards my flesh! If you like to avoid chemicals and toxic sprays, here are a few strategies to naturally deter a range of bugs and furry friends from walking, flying, and nibbling their way through your landscape. Support Your Soil and Plants

• C lear vegetation: My partner, a builder, insists that we clear a one-foot perimeter around our house and keep it free from vegetation with a layer of mulch. At first I thought that aesthetic was a bit austere. But now I’ve grown fond of being able to see that space; it removes hiding spaces for opportunistic critters and protects our foundation from over-zealous root systems.

Healthy plants resist pests, and healthy soil yields healthy plants. So first off, support your soil and space with the following techniques.

• P lant herbs: Lemon balm, marjoram, oregano, dandelion, chamomile, stinging nettle, and valerian are perennials that improve the general health of their surroundings.

• Apply Compost: Apply a two-inch layer of compost and incorporate it into the top six inches of your garden beds. The organic matter will improve the physical, chemical, and biological strength of your soil. • Apply Mulch: Add a two-inch layer of mulch to your garden beds. It will reduce weeds and keep a cleaner zone around plants. • Choose wisely: Choose appropriate, resistant varieties. Keep them happy with yearly applications of mulch and wellrotted manure.

Make Your Space Uninviting to Critters And Pests

Natural Nutmeg - May/June 2018

• A ttract pollinators and insect predators: Grow nectar-rich flowers such as clovers, mints, asters, and coneflowers to attract both insect pollinators and beneficial insect predators. • P rune: Pruning, as well as thinning of the fruit, will help keep pests and diseases at bay. • R emove and squash: Gather up fallen leaves from trees with scab diseases. Break apart the tent caterpillar nests in the crotches of cherry trees and stomp on the larvae. Slugs and Snails Slugs, the stealthy, slimy predators of the evening, will feast on young plants if not deterred. • R oll out some copper tape: Try lining your raised beds with some copper tape; they don’t like to crawl over it. Clear any grasses or stems going over the tape that could serve as a bridge. • B elly up with slug beer traps: Pour a small amount of beer into a wide jar buried in the soil. I’ve also had success with empty tuna fish cans. The slugs will belly up to the watering hole and die instead of munching on plants. et ducks: The soft-footed feet of ducks are much easier on • G the yard than chickens, and they’ll spend a lot of time pursuing slugs. (Note: Keep ducks out of the veggie garden until the plants have reached maturity. After the plants are big and strong you can give the ducks free reign.) • W ater in the morning: Slugs are more active at night and prefer damp conditions to move around a space. So try watering in the morning instead of the evening so the surface of the soil dries out and isn’t as inviting to slugs. • T ry diatomaceous earth: This feels like crunchy dust to a human’s hands, but its tiny jagged edges (skeletal remains

of microscopic creatures) are really uncomfortable to soft-bodied pests. Sprinkle it around your prized plants that are getting attacked. It works best in dry conditions. Mosquitos These blood-thirsty buzzers can really interrupt an evening of fun. • Cover up: Putting on lightweight, longsleeved apparel will reduce the target area. • Avoid their feeding times: Stay inside during their most active times during dusk and dawn. • Swish standing pools of water: Mosquitoes complete three stages of their life cycle in the water (egg, larva and pupa) in 4 to 14 days. Standing water must stay stagnant for a minimum of four days to support the life cycle. So if you eliminate the breeding site by disturbing the water – for example swishing it, using a pump to aerate water, or replacing standing water – you will reduce mosquito populations.

Aphids Aphids seem to always sneak up on me. One day I’ll see one, and then the next day the entire plant is infested.

your fence and prevent critters from burrowing under. Or for larger animals, go high with sixfoot fences and netting.

• Blast ‘em with water: Spraying aphids off mature, established plants with a strong squirt can control small aphid populations.

• Trap them: Place appropriatelysized traps, especially next to walls where smaller critters like to run.

• Pinch ‘em: Again, small populations can be physically removed.

• Annoy them: Try sonic responders that emit signals that don’t sound good to certain creatures.

• Attract beneficial insects: Ladybugs are the most well-known predator of aphids. Invite them over: you can buy ladybugs in bulk! • Get sneaky: Yellow nasturtioums are a decoy for black aphids. Remove the plants and aphids before the insects begin to produce young with wings. Spearmint, stinging nettle, southernwood, and garlic help repel aphids. Moles, Voles, and Other Furry “Friends” • Fence them out: Get inspired by the Peter Rabbit movie and dig deep with

• Put up a bat signal: Invite natural predators of mosquitoes, such as bats, frogs, fish, turtles, birds and dragonflies. Provide their habitat (such as a bat house) and get them working for you. • Plant herbs and squeeze them: Citronella (lemon balm, lemon grass), geranium, rosemary, marigolds, and lavender to name just a few help control mosquitoes. Squeeze their leaves to further release their pungent odors which smell pleasant to us, but repulsive to mozzies.

• Helps protect against the formation of fibrocystic breasts • Helps use fat for energy

These are just some of the positive effects of hormone balancing. It is worth noting that the prescription called into a compounding pharmacy by a physician is tailor made to the exact dose the doctor is prescribing for the individual patient. This is in contrast to a pharmaceutical drug made in the millions and shipped to pharmacies which place everyone on an average dose. Bioidentical hormones are prescribed in the dose appropriate to the patient. Thus, to minimize safety concerns, the lowest effective dose can be prescribed.

• Depression

Testing and Treating Hormone Imbalance

• Forgetfulness

What are the hormone imbalances that can be checked for? This author routinely utilizes saliva testing as a preferred method for checking the bioactive levels of Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, DHEA, and Cortisol. When these hormones are tested by blood they are testing hormones that are bound by proteins circulating in the system, and the numbers may not always accurately reflect the physiological activity of the hormone for that person. When a person’s saliva is checked, the hormones that are detected are not bound by proteins and thus may reveal more accurate reflection of the bioactive hormone, that which creates the many effects of the hormones on the body. A proper check also takes into account not just the hormone levels but the balance between them. In particular, the balance between estrogen and progesterone is important.

Safe Hormone Replacement Therapy By Henry C. Sobo, MD

S

ynthetic pharmaceuticals prescribed as “hormone replacement” therapy are among the most widely prescribed medications in this country. They are most often used for women in menopause for symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Unfortunately, even when effective for symptom relief, there is concern regarding the long-term safety of taking these “hormones”. Many women, fearing the consequences of being treated with hormones, refuse therapy they might otherwise benefit from. With Bioidentical hormone replacement the benefits of hormone replacement therapy may be enjoyed while minimizing safety concerns. When hormone imbalances are present there is a long list of associated symptoms that may occur. These are important not just for women but for men as well. Consider how many symptoms overlap between the sexes... Women’s Symptoms • Low Libido • Depression • Forgetfulness • Sleep Disturbances • Aches & Pains • Weakness • Fatigue • Thinning skin • Headaches • Bone Loss • Decreased Stamina

Men’s Symptoms

• Sleep Disturbances • Aches & Pains • Weakness • Fatigue • Thinning Skin • Headaches • Bone Loss • Decreased Stamina • Heart Palpitations • Prostate Problems • Decreased Erections Why Bioidentical Hormones? Bioidentical hormones are made by compounding pharmacies based on a personalized prescription from a doctor. They have a chemical structure identical to the hormone as it is produced by the human body. Therefore, when a woman or man is prescribed these hormones, what they are receiving is a replenishment of something that is naturally made in the body, but which has become deficient, thus causing symptoms. Synthetic hormones treat symptoms rather than rebalancing natural hormone levels. In his book, Natural Progesterone, John Lee, MD enumerates the following effects of natural progesterone (remember synthetic “progestins” like provera are not progesterone).

• Heart Palpitations

• Natural diuretic

• Thyroid insufficiency

• Natural antidepressant

• Vaginal Dryness

• Improved libido • Facilitates thyroid hormone action

• Stimulates osteoblasts for bone building

A concept of great importance describing what millions of women suffer from is the condition called Estrogen Dominance. This is when the estrogen hormones are relatively too high in comparison to the progesterone levels. Estrogen dominance can occur even when a woman develops estrogen deficiency at the start of menopause causing symptoms like hot flashes. This is because even though the production of estrogen is dropping, the production of progesterone drops even more, resulting in comparatively more estrogen than progesterone circulating in the system. These women are candidates for receiving both estrogen and progesterone. It is the balance between them which needs to be addressed as well as their basic levels standing alone. When estrogen becomes the dominant hormone and progesterone is deficient, estrogen can have the following harmful effects on the body:

• Water retention

flashes and night sweats will start improving. Libido will begin to return and weight control will be noticeably affected over time.

• Breast swelling

Follow up by the physician should include monitoring of the person’s response, retesting for hormone levels after a reasonable period of time, and adjustment of the treatment on an individualized basis. The compounding pharmacy can then be instructed by the doctor to change prescriptions as per the unique need of each patient.

• Fibrocystic breasts • PMS • Decreased libido • Uterine fibroid • Weight gain • Cravings for sweets The symptoms of estrogen dominance can be successfully treated with natural progesterone, with its many benefits as enumerated above.

As hormone levels return to more youthful levels, improved nutrition, and fitness will likewise enable an individual to feel rejuvenated, enjoying greater energy, better overall well-being, and an improved opportunity for greater longevity.

Testosterone for Men and Women There is a misconception about testosterone. Many people will identify it as “the male hormone”. While it is true that testosterone levels are normally much higher in men than in women, women also need to be tested for testosterone. If a woman is deficient (relative to the proper female levels) then the symptoms of hormone imbalance occur.

Dr. Sobo is a Medical Doctor practicing in Stamford, CT. More information about natural hormones and about Dr. Sobo’s practice can be found on the Internet at http://drsobo.com. Dr. Sobo’s office phone number is 203-348-8805. See ad on page 19.

HDL and free testosterone levels often plummet in aging men and women. This combination of low HDL and low testosterone results in the risk of cardiovascular disease development. Response to Treatment and Disease Prevention Most people will see the benefits of bioidentical hormones quickly. Within several days a patient will begin to sleep better, and hot

Six Innovative Treatments for Lyme Disease

By Adam Breiner, ND

I

f you’ve been diagnosed with Lyme disease, chances are good you’ve been prescribed antibiotics. That may be fine, but it may not be enough to keep symptoms at bay. You may find the problems you were having return a few weeks, months, or even years later. This happens because the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria (which causes Lyme disease) likes to “hide out” in tissues where blood flow and therefore oxygen is reduced, such as in connective tissue. Borrelia has also been found to create biofilms, which are like a walled-in city, and the bacteria can survive there in safety until antibiotics are no longer in the body’s system. Then the Borrelia bacteria will reemerge, causing symptoms of Lyme disease to appear once again. Do You Have Lyme? Fewer than 50% of patients with Lyme Disease recall getting a tick bite. It is thought that the longer the tick is attached, the higher the risk of transmission. However, transmission from an infected tick can happen very quickly. It’s possible to contract Lyme disease even if the tick is attached for less than 24 hours. If you don’t develop the classic “bulls-eye rash”, the Erythema rash, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have Lyme. Some studies show that the rash can occur in less than 20% of Lyme patients, therefore this is not necessarily a good indicator as proof of infection. If you do find a tick on you or your child you should proceed to carefully remove the tick as instructed on the ILADS (International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society) website. As cautioned on their website, do not squeeze, burn the tick with a match, or place Vaseline on the tick. Go to http://www.ilads. org/lyme/what-to-do-if-bit-by-tick.php for instructions as well as a video on their recommended tick-removal process. Once you have the tick, I advise my patients (unless they are coming into the office with the tick) to send the captured tick for testing. Tick Report (https://www.tickreport.com/) is an excellent place to send the tick for testing for Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases. Tick Report is a non-profit resource based at UMass Amherst; the turnaround time is fairly rapid, and their price is very reasonable. How Can We Detect Lyme? I have had patients come in that have been told they do not have Lyme because their tests are negative. Standard blood tests are not always very accurate or sensitive enough. The first test that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) says to do is the ELISA (Enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay) test. The ELISA test must be done within the first 30 days of symptoms appearing and even then, it can miss up to 35% of culture-proven cases. The next test that is recommended is the Western blot test; however com-

30

Natural Nutmeg - May/June 2018

mercial lab kits remove certain bands which represent an antibody which is specific to a part of the cell wall of the Lyme bacteria causing the Western blot test to miss up to 20-30% of culture-proven positive cases. Armin Labs (https://www.arminlabs.com/en/tests/ elispot) in Germany, offers an excellent test called the EliSpot test which has been found to be between 20 to 200 times more sensitive than the ELISA test. The EliSpot test shows current activity in chronic and recent infections. Also, by monitoring this test, your doctor can tell if your recommended treatment is effective. Testing is just one factor in diagnosis; symptoms can even be more important. Very sick and chronically ill patients may not show an immune response to bacteria. Only after treating the patient and restoring their immune system, will they demonstrate a positive response to testing. EAV Testing In our office, we use instrument testing known as EAV testing (Electro-acupuncture According to Voll). This device can measure the flow of electrons or electromagnetic energy running through the patient’s acupuncture meridian points and can determine whether the electrons are flowing properly. Once we establish the flow along a meridian, we can further test for the signals of various things such as toxins or infections (like the signal for Borrelia burgdorferi) and whether these signals are altering electrical conductance. I like to call this testing Biological Signal Analysis. For instance, if we send the signal for Borrelia down a pathway that we know has a disturbance and it changes the electrical conductance on that pathway, then it indicates the presence of a Borrelia signal. We can also test how strong that signal is. I find that EAV with Biological Signal Analysis is a very accurate method for giving insight into the patient’s case and into the type and locations of infections and toxins a person has. Although we find a high correlation with the other testing methods used, we never use this method as a stand-alone diagnostic test for Lyme. In addition, we use EAV testing to help us understand which botanicals (see Botanical Medicine below) will best help our Lyme patients. We also use this testing to determine if our patient’s mesenchyme is blocked. Mesenchyme holds our cells together, also known as interstitial tissue. Our nerve endings, capillaries, venules and lymphatic(s) are located here and this is where the exchange of nutrients and wastes take place. For example, as you breathe in oxygen it is transported to your lungs, then to your arteries, and down to your capillaries where it is unloaded into the mesenchyme and then diffused into the cells of your organs. The CO2 (carbon dioxide) comes out of the cells into the mesenchyme, and is picked up by the venules, goes to your veins, and from there to your lungs to be exhaled. If the mesenchyme is blocked and cannot function

efficiently problems may occur. Botanicals, nutraceuticals, and even drugs will have a hard time working properly if your mesenchyme is blocked. We test for this, and can unblock a blocked mesenchyme with specifically selected homeopathics, (See Acupuncture and Traditional Japanese Reiki below). How Should You Treat Lyme Disease? There is no one treatment that is guaranteed to work for every patient; however here are six “alternative” approaches that we use in our office, which we find very effective. Botanical Medicine. No matter how advanced medical science becomes, never underestimate the powers of Mother Nature! Many antimicrobial herbs and herbal formula combinations have been shown to effectively kill Borrelia burgdorferi (the bacteria that causes Lyme disease) and other tick-borne pathogens. Herbs have an incredibly complex combination of phytochemicals that can be very harmful to certain bacteria, yet are harmless to people. Even top pharmaceutical researchers have a hard time creating such things in the lab. Incorporating botanical medicine into a patient’s overall treatment protocol can help prevent developing a resistance to medications such as antibiotics. We use EAV testing to help us identify which botanicals are right for the individual patient.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is incredibly effective at killing Borrelia burgdorferi. In fact, one clinical study has shown that 75 percent of patients with chronic Lyme disease experience improvements in their symptoms while using HBOT. (Of this 75 percent, a quarter experience complete remission of symptoms!)

Text: SOPHIA to 44222

During HBOT, patients are placed inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber with an oxygen concentration of 100 percent. The chamber is slowly raised between 1.5 to 2 times the normal atmospheric pressure, allowing more oxygen to enter the bloodstream and cerebral spinal fluid.

Borrelia bacteria are microaerophilic anaerobes, meaning that they don’t like a lot of oxygen. Under hyperbaric conditions, the concentration of oxygen can become great enough to kill Borrelia, especially in combination with antibiotic and/or herbal therapies. Furthermore, since HBOT reduces inflammation in the brain and other tissues, it can bring healing and resolution to many of the inflammatory side effects of Lyme disease, such as brain fog and other neurological impairments. EEG Neurofeedback and other Neurotherapies. An electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the most accurate tools to measure the functioning of the brain. As patients’ brain waves are read in real time, special software gives rewards—for example, audible feedback or making a movie brighter—when optimal brain wave

patterns occur. This prompts the brain to subconsciously re-pattern itself.

which focuses on using supplements and a proper diet to restore biochemical balance.

Because Lyme Spirochetes can cross the blood-brain barrier, Lyme patients often will suffer from brain fog, poor concentration, memory issues, anxiety and depression. I find that Neurofeedback can help treat the ‘brain fog’ from which many Lyme patients suffer. Certain neurofeedback protocols can even help boost the immune system, since the brain is the master commander of the immune system. We use Neurofeedback as well as other EEG-guided neurotherapies such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Transcranial Electrical Stimulation in our health center. We use these frequencies to help reduce swelling and inflammation and to increase blood flow to areas of the brain where there is comprised blood flow as seen in immune-comprised patients.

We use blood tests and hair analysis which can pinpoint which nutrients are most needed for a particular patient. These tests can also indicate how the patient’s body best metabolizes foods, and which type of diet will work best. Most Lyme patients will benefit from a low-glycemic, high-antioxidant diet, rich in fresh organic produce. Patients should also be tested for hidden food sensitivities, such as gluten since these can increase inflammation. In addition, we may use stool analysis to check for pathogens, parasites, and gut dysbiosis (microbial imbalance).

Diet. Diets that are pro-inflammatory and depleted of nutrients cause imbalances in the body’s biochemistry. Specifically, the body will become more acidic and inflamed, and less oxygen will be available on the cellular level. Infections such as Borrelia burgdorferi thrive in these conditions. Borrelia bacteria and other co-infections common with Lyme then release their own toxins, which further disrupt cellular functions and chemistry. Enter nutritional intervention,

Homeopathic Medicines. Homeopathics are gentle yet effective medicines that use highly diluted natural substances to stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities. They can boost the immune system to more effectively fight the infectious pathogenic organisms that are contributing to the Lyme patient’s symptoms (including the Borrelia bacteria, viruses, and other co-infections). Homeopathics can also assist various organs in eliminating toxins. I tell my patients that Homeopathics do not actually kill the organisms themselves, but send information to the body that tells it to ‘wake up’ and address pathogens via its natural immune responses. It is important to understand that the remedies chosen are tailored to the individual patient and may be updated on subsequent visits as organism levels change.

them harder to treat. For instance, many patients have blockages in some of the meridians that feed energy to the head, and may experience symptoms such as brain fog or headaches. These same energetic blockages can prevent medicines from reaching their intended destination. On the flip side, the toxic die-off of the Borrelia bacteria may have more difficulty exiting the body effectively. Opening these energetic blockages through acupuncture or traditional Japanese Reiki will often improve a patient’s symptoms and allow other therapies to work more effectively. Traditional Oriental medicine is rapidly finding its way into the mainstream and for good reason. Electromagnetic energy (referred to as Qi) flows in “rivers” (or meridians) throughout the body. When certain meridians have too much or too little Qi flowing through them, the body becomes imbalanced. This can be corrected by tapping into acupuncture points. Just as Acupuncture helps Lyme patients in clearing restrictions along meridian pathways, Traditional Japanese Reiki can provide an even more powerful means to also open these pathways. In our office, we have an expert in Traditional Japanese Reiki. Traditional Japanese Reiki is different than the Reiki normally experienced in the United States. This original form of Reiki requires many years of study of Chinese medicine and incorporates traditional Chinese diagnostic techniques like tongue and pulse diagnostics. It also requires someone that can move energy very powerfully. Very few people have the ability to both “push” and “pull” this energy. Reiki masters who have come to our office have commented that the experience was both unique and powerful. Do the best you can to purify your body and live a healthy lifestyle. It’s important to supplement antibiotics with natural therapies that promote whole-body balance. When the body is overwhelmed with toxins, chemicals, viruses, and bacteria (which is a common state of affairs in the modern world), the organs of detoxification like the liver and lymphatic system become stressed and overtaxed. This makes it much less likely you’ll be able to fight off Lyme disease and its symptoms. Dr. Adam Breiner practices naturopathic medicine at WholeBody Medicine in Fairfield, CT. Patients from Connecticut and surrounding states seek his care for Lyme Disease, Brain Injuries, such as stroke, concussions, TBI, as well as enhanced Brain Performance. 10 Secrets to Find Lasting Love Online

on a dinner date. Feminine, form-fitting clothing will catch his eye, along with bright, solid colors, makeup and heels. Be alluring but not too sexy - you don’t want to send the wrong message. And, no kids, animals, or other people in the shots. 3. Reach Out to Men. Don’t rely on matches the dating sites send. Do your own search and contact 3-5 men when you get online. Send a short message that asks a question. If you’re on dating apps, don’t swipe right on 100 men. Try 20 and save some for the next session.

M

any singles despise online dating. They don’t like how few people respond, all the texting and confusion when interested parties disappear. It’s not perfect but looking for love on the web is a useful tool when you know how to make the most of it. Knowing what to expect and consider normal will make navigating easier. I’ve written this from a woman’s perspective, but most tips work for men too. 1. Write a Short Profile. The best profile is less than 300 words and doesn’t describe everything about you. It’s written conversationally, as if you were talking which makes it fun to read. Your profile has only one purpose – to get someone to send an email. How do you write a captivating profile? Avoid lists, starting every sentence with “I” or talking about what you don’t want. Stay positive and share highlights about your life that a man would find interesting (think sports, history, jazz, hiking, etc.) 2. Post Great Photos. Your pictures are the first thing he sees so don’t post selfies. Choose flattering outfits that you’d wear

Don’t say, “I like your profile” or “We have so much in common.” Everyone says that! If you want a response, be engaging. For example, if a man likes hiking and you do too, say, “I see you like hiking – me too. What’s your favorite spot?” Keep exchanges short and use humor if possible. 4. Know What to Expect. Knowing what to expect will keep things real and prevent disappointment. Everyone gets a low response rate of 10 – 20% at the most. This is NORMAL. It’s also normal that people start out interested and then disappear. It’s not only happening to you. EVERYONE goes through this. Just keep at it to find love – it works for millions of people. 5. Get Clear on What You Want. Think about the kind of person you want. Are you looking for a kind, generous, and fun man? Maybe someone with an active, healthy lifestyle? Are faith and politics a must? What kind of relationship do you seek? What are your deal breakers? Be true to yourself or you could end up with a person who is not a good match. 6. Talk by Phone. You can learn a lot from a brief conversation. Listen to the sound of his voice and ease of conversation. Consider your comfort level with the person and if he seems confident. Even 15 minutes is enough to get a good idea if you want to meet.

7. Forget Long Distance Suitors. Finding a good match can take time, so don’t make it harder by considering someone from far away. Look for love locally to save yourself the heartbreak. 8. Cut Your Losses. Many singles text, but never meet. To avoid this, limit emailing and texting to seven days prior to meeting. If you haven’t met, suggest it! Send a message saying, “Emailing/texting is fun but, let’s meet to see if we have chemistry”. If he makes excuses or is too busy, STOP communicating. He is NOT serious. That’s his way of saying you’ll never be his priority so let him go. (Guys, the same is true for evasive, unavailable women.) 9. Scammers and Safety. Unfortunately, there are people who will play with your head or want your money. Be wary of long distance matches, people from other countries and sadly, singles claiming to be in the military with crazy restrictions on communication. Obviously, don’t send anyone money. Get a new email address just for dating without your name. Guard your privacy by not revealing your last name, where you live or work for the first few dates. If your gut tells you something feels off, PAY ATTENTION! Your intuition is often valid. 10. Lift Your Energy. There are five elements that must align to find lasting love online. Your profile, photos, skill at interacting, activity level and your ENERGY! Before you get online, center yourself, imagine being with the right man and how wonderful that feels. With the right mindset, you send out good vibes which come back to you! On the other hand, when you think online dating won’t work– you emit negativity. Uplift your energy before you reach out and your results will definitely improve! It’s hard to argue with the positive results and statistics that online dating delivers. Co-Creating Healthy Families: What You Need to Do Before Getting Pregnant By Jessica Wei, MD

I

t is so amazing to have the opportunity and desire to create a family with the one you love. I had the great privilege to be very intentionally pregnant twice, and give birth to two beautiful boys, who continue to be happy and healthy. And I will admit that if I knew what I know now, I likely would have prepared differently! Now I simply have a very directed purpose of sharing what I have learned to provide some beginning guidance on how women and men can prepare themselves, their bodies and minds, to co-create happy and healthy children. As with every aspect of our body, there is an amazingly complex and innate intelligence to having a healthy baby. As an obstetrician, I observed thousands of times, how this process of conception, pregnancy, and birth resulted in a healthy baby. What I also observed were the times when it didn’t go so well, and the very challenging and heart-breaking issues that parents sometimes faced as their child grew and developed. Issues with digestion and growth; neurologic difficulties with vision, seizures, movement; delayed emotional and intellectual development; issues with anxiety, depression, and ADHD at very young ages; and cancer. Very often, parents can feel powerless to help their children. Yet, what if we actually have the power to prevent our children from suffering and create a life for them which enables them to be healthy, balanced, happy, and strong? A deliberate and mindful cocreation of a good life for our children.

Why Prepare To Conceive? Have you heard about the concept of epigenetics? Most people understand that we inherit genetic information from both of our parents. What some may not understand is that there are many influences which determine whether that genetic information is actually expressed in an individual. This is the study of epigenetics. So what actually influences gene expression? Diet and nutrition, our environment and exposure/avoidance of exposure to toxins, and thoughts and emotions. When a baby is developing inside a mother’s womb, this is when epigenetic factors have the greatest impact. And these influences also continue to have impact throughout our lives. What this means is that we have the power and ability to create the conditions which will lead to a healthy and balanced life for our children. The health issues that our children may struggle with are not inevitabilities which we then have to accept and face. There exists the possibility of a deliberate and mindful co-creation of a healthy and good life for our children. And the best time to prepare is before you get pregnant. How to Prepare Optimally Before Getting Pregnant There are four main areas on which to focus: • N ourishment and gut health support • Appropriate supplementation • D etoxification • A ddressing stress and emotions 1. Nourishment And Gut Health Support: A good foundation food plan for conception is anti-inflammatory with four guidelines: • E at whole, fresh food as close to its natural form as possible; • E at a wide variety of vegetables and fruits with as low a pesticide burden as possible (eat organic when you can, especially when buying the “Dirty Dozen”); • E at lower glycemic-load carbohydrates to avoid blood sugar instability and insulin resistance to support hormonal balance; • E nsure adequate omega-3 fatty acid intake through the consumption of wild salmon, sardines, omega-3 fortified eggs, and/or supplementation. Focus on creating optimal gut health before conceiving and delivering, as the gut microbiome that you have during pregnancy and birth will determine your baby’s inheritance of balanced or imbalanced gut bacteria. For some, eating pre- and probiotic foods

may be enough along with a clean antiinflammatory diet and perhaps taking a probiotic supplementation. However, for others, exploring gut further with testing for gut infections and inflammation may be necessary to ensure the best gut environment for overall body balance including optimal sex hormonal health. 2. Appropriate Supplementation: For both men and women, taking a multivitamin is recommended simply because most of us are not getting what we need from what we eat. Keep in mind that we want to be fully fortified BEFORE getting pregnant. The quality of egg and sperm depend on good nutrient support, and after fertilization, the earliest development of the fetus requires the optimal environment to send the proper signals for healthy development. There is a bit of a myth about taking a “prenatal vitamin” as providing all that a woman needs before, during, and after pregnancy. From my experience as an obstetrician, many commercially-available prenatal vitamins sold actively to obstetricians do not actually provide good nutrient support or do not have the recommended forms of supplementation. A good prenatal vitamin is a good multivitamin. So, what basics should both men and women consider when preparing their bodies to have a baby? • Vitamin A (important for baby’s developing vision and immune function): look for no more than 2,500 of “preformed” Vitamin A (palmitate, acetate, retinol palmitate). Foods sources of vitamin A are “provitamins” or carotenoids such as beta-carotene. Provitamins are safer because they are only converted to formed Vitamin A when needed. Vitamin A toxicity can affect brain and organ development. So, we need to be mindful of how we are supplementing with Vitamin A.

itamin D (important for baby’s • V developing nervous system and cognition, possible prevention of autism; lowers the risk of gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia): the recommendation for supplementation should be based on testing of a 25-hydroxy Vitamin D level. An optimal level should be between 50 and 80 ng/mL. This may mean taking higher dose Vitamin D3 for a short period of time to boost levels (5,000 to 10,000 IU daily) based on laboratory testing. • Folate (essential for proper neural tube development, as well as overall development and growth): take an active form, either folinic acid or methyl-folate, 800 micrograms. Folic acid is the synthetic version of folate and is not easily converted to folate. Moreover, up to 60% of people may have a genetic variation in an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) which may further reduce their ability to convert folic acid. So, taking folate or folinic acid is a better choice than folic acid. • I odine (key for thyroid function, breast and hormone health): 150 mcg needed/day. Food sources include egg yolks, sea vegetables such as seaweed and kelp, saltwater fish.

mega-3 fatty acids (DHA important • O for baby’s brain and visual development) at least 300-400 mg DHA/500600 mg EPA. 3. Detoxification: Along with nourishing your body properly, removing the toxins that are present is key for overall wellness and functioning, as well as preventing the passing along of those toxins to babies during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is another area where we exert leverage over preventing illness in our children. In 2005, the Environmental Working Group published a

study of the evaluation of the umbilical cord blood of ten babies born in 2004. Testing revealed the presence of a total of 287 different chemicals! Some toxins to consider are heavy metals, such as mercury, aluminum, and arsenic; pesticides; chemicals found in plastics and other synthetic products. Eliminating as much of the body burden of toxins, as well as strengthening the body’s detoxification capacity (liver/ kidney function) is vital for preventing future problems for our children. It should be noted that not all exposures will create problems for all children. Because we don’t yet understand which babies are more susceptible to exposures to toxins, it is better to reduce the risk by considering detoxification for both men and women prior to conception. We can reduce exposure through attention to the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, the chemicals we put on our skin, and home and workplace exposures. 4. Addressing Emotions and Stress: Along with the initial careful consideration of whether or not to have a baby, a couple must take care to address their emotional health and levels of stress. Needless to say, deciding to have a baby is very serious decision, and while it is the happiest event in many people’s lives, it also poses its own set of stressors which most cannot really anticipate. Cultivating calm and relaxation prior to conceiving is foundationally important for creating the best conditions for optimal growth and development. Increased and ongoing stress during pregnancy (whatever the source) increases the release of the fight-or-flight hormones and neurotransmitters, cortisol and epinephrine/norepinephrine. As one can well imagine, this defense/ survival-based milieu is not optimal for a growing baby to experience while in-utero. While a woman is pregnant, the stage for the innate wisdom and balance of that

baby’s body and physiology begins to be set, and it is well within our control and power to ensure that a child receives the best advantage and instruction from the very beginning of life. So much to consider! And know that we all have the power and choice to cocreate happy and healthy children when we mindfully consider the care of our bodies, minds, and spirit before getting pregnant. The impact is immense. We have the power to choose an optimal path for ourselves and our families, and this will lead to more ease and joy in our lives naturally. Find Your Direction in Life with the Medicine Wheel By Jo Homar tone medicine wheels have been built and used for ceremonies for millennia and each one has unique characteristics and qualities. The medicine wheel, sometimes known as the Sacred Hoop, has been used by generations of various Native American tribes for health and healing. The medicine wheel is a circle divided by a cross to create four directions (north, south, east and west). In Native American traditions, the medicine wheel was a reflection of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses and it gave people guidelines to follow for personal growth. Each person is represented somewhere within that circle and that placement is associated with a special moon, power animal, healing plant, color and mineral.

S

Historically, medicine wheels were constructed by laying stones in a particular pattern on the ground oriented to the four directions. Most medicine wheels follow the basic pattern of having a center made of stone and surrounding that is an outer ring of stones with lines of rocks or spokes radiating from the center to the cardinal directions. While alignment with the cardinal directions of north, south, east and west is common, some medicine wheels are also aligned with astronomical phenomena involving the sun, moon, some stars, and some planets in relation to the Earth’s horizon at that location. Movement in the medicine wheel and in the Native American ceremonies is circular and typically in a clockwise or “sunwise” direction. This helps to align with the forces of Nature, such as gravity and the rising and setting of the sun. Each of the four directions is typically represented by a distinctive color such as black, red, yellow and white. 1. East represents the beginning, the ending, and the renewal. It is typically associated with the upper world of light, enlightenment, and returning back to our origin. 2. South is responsible for the growth and flowering of all living beings. South is most often associated with the flowing of emotions. Symbolizing our inner child and rediscovery of childlike wonder.

3. West symbolizes a place of transitions, the shadow within us that requires introspection. 4. North is a place of giving back or sharing your wisdom with others. A place of healing. The directions can also represent: 1. Stages of Life – birth, youth, adult, death 2. Seasons – spring, summer, winter, fall 3. Aspects of Life – spiritual, emotional, intellectual, physical 4. Animals – eagle, bear, wolf, buffalo 5. Ceremonial Plants – tobacco, sweet grass, sage, cedar The medicine wheel can be found in many native cultures around the world. It is a universal symbol, and its meaning has been defined by different cultures throughout the ages based on their location, religious beliefs, and tribal practices. The most commonly held belief is that the medicine wheel represents the natural cycles of life and the basic way in which the natural world, including humans, moves and evolves. The power of birth, death, and rebirth are encompassed in the medicine wheel, as well as each individuals path, toward personal growth and realization.

tion. They are powerful tools that can be used during celestial alignments such as sunrise and sunset of the summer solstice, as well as the rising places of certain stars associated with the summer solstice. This can be valuable while setting intentions, personal growth and healing. Medicine wheels are terrific tools for personal exploration, growth and transformation. Every aspect of the wheel is interconnected and represents wholeness and serves as a framework to honor the forces of nature. The medicine wheel can be used for finding direction in life and for aligning physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual realities. One can use it to attune themselves to Earth forces and to the natural energies that affect their lives. Each path of the medicine wheel can help you to acquire the knowledge to work on changes that will put meaning and purpose into your life, bringing enlightenment and fulfillment. A healing practitioner can aid an individual in physical, emotional and spiritual healing while working within the sacred space of a medicine wheel. Jo Homar is founder and owner of Bountiful Blessings Healing & Guidance, Sedona Healing Retreats and The HIGHER Connection Institute for Intergalactic Studies. Her work encompasses bridging the gap between the spiritual and physical realms. Healing work from her Sedona office includes integration of sacred sites. Sometimes the medicine wheel was literal circles of stones used for religious ceremonies. Other times the medicine wheel was sewn or painted on clothes and textiles. The medicine wheel was a tool that was commonly used in ceremonies, teachings, and therapies by the native people of North America. Within the wheel is a representation of the interconnectedness of human and nature as cycles and spirals of energy. The medicine wheel can also be used as a tool for meditation and reflecwww.NaturalNutmeg.com

BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Let Your Body Guide You to the Right Choices

S

everal years ago I developed vertigo while training for a marathon and doing all the other things I normally do. I asked myself how I would describe this feeling to others and the words I heard were, “The world is spinning around.” I knew my body was telling me to slow down and rest. So it was making it hard for me to get out of bed in the morning. At the present time I am having right ankle problems and there is the reason, I am aware of too, “Having too many responsibilities.” If you are willing to rehearse and practice you can become the person you want to be. All we can do is coach and guide you but you have to show up for practice. We know that your blood chemistry is changed by the role you play. Even actors experience changes in their immune function and cortisol levels when performing in a play. A tragedy can lead to illness while acting in a comedy can help you resist disease. Remember we are talking about healing your life. Healing and curing are separate entities but a healed life resists many illnesses and is more likely to lead to a cured body. Do not let your beliefs get in the way. Let your experience be what guides you. I have learned from my body and the work of healers that amazing things can be accomplished which were never taught to me or discussed in medical school. If you live the way we are discussing you become a respant. That is you are no longer a submissive, long suffering patient but a responsible participant. So develop your multiple personalities and let the child within come forth and experience love and humor and feel what it does for your body. My wife Bobbie did stand up comedy at our presentations and what impressed me was how much healthier

everyone’s bodies looked after fifteen minutes of laughter. And she received more thanks when we were done than I did. So learn from your body and your problem and let the charcoal under pressure become a diamond which frees you from the darkness and disability. I must mention because of how so many of us are brought up that this is not about guilt, shame and blame. This is not what did you do wrong but about what you can do right by participating in your life and communicating with the wisdom within you. Yes, I have been injured and developed health problems which were not about emotional issues but things like accidents and tick bites. However, by listening to my body I can help myself to heal more rapidly and avoid chronic problems and not need a disease to get my needs met. So stop worrying about doing it right or failing, because of messages from your past, and participate in your life and play as well as you can. The body is our gift. It demonstrates what our lives are about just as a TV screen shows you the content of the program being viewed. I work with patient’s dreams and drawings and know that the body can communicate in symbols too. I use them to help make diagnoses so that patients can see their inner wisdom displayed and help them make therapeutic choices. The colors used in their drawings also carry meaning and express emotions. Art therapists and Jungian therapists are aware of this, though it is not mentioned in medical school. It is no accident that Solzhenitsyn, in his book Cancer Ward, describes self induced healing as “a rainbow colored butterfly.” There you have the symbol of transformation and all the emotions associated with it in one symbol. So do not be afraid to step forward and listen to your body. This is not about doing it right or wrong, being good or bad, but about being open to the universal language of the unconscious as spoken through our bodies. Let your body help guide you to the right choices and treatment and ultimately the self healing of your life too. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to be called-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace.
