ave you ever had a really vivid dream and then weeks or months later experienced in waking life exactly what happened in the dream? Was it a premonition or just a coincidence? Robert Moss, a best-selling author and the pioneer of Active Dreaming asks in his book, “The Three ONLY Things”, is it only a dream, only a coincidence or only my imagination? He shows us that dreams coach us for future challenges and opportunities and that these “only” things can be the real keys to finding and living your true purpose. Moss says, “When we claim the power of dreams, coincidence and imagination, we connect with extraordinary sources of direction, healing and energy.” Once you begin to pay more attention to your dreams, you will find that often there is a message from your soul or subconscious. This can relate to an important decision you are trying to make to a situation with a relationship or even a connection with a departed, loved one. Some people say that they can never remember their dreams. Moss has an answer for this too. He says, “A primary symptom of soul loss is the inability to remember one’s dreams, as if the part of the sufferer that knows how to dream has gone away out of pain or disgust. We begin to practice soul recovery for ourselves when we agree to make a little room each day for our dreams to come back. We start by agreeing that when we wake up, we will recall something from the night even if it is not a dream. This way, we signal to our dream source that we are ready to receive.” Another useful technique to remember dreams is to set the intention that you will remember something from your dream as soon as you wake up. Keep a notebook and pen on your nightstand and even if it’s 3:00am, take the time to jot some quick notes. Otherwise, you will not be able to recall much from dreams in the earlier part of the night after you fall back asleep and begin to have a new set of dreams. Dreams can be precognitive in that they foretell an event or situation that is to occur in the future. They can be related to something in your past that you are trying to heal from. Or they can serve as helpful information for a present situation that you may be involved in. Keeping a dream journal is a great way to gain clarity about your dreams. Usually, when they are fresh in your mind, it’s very hard to decipher them or find any relevant meaning to your life. But often, I’ve found, when I go back and read entries from previous weeks or months, they make much more sense and provide clear solutions to problems or troubles I’m having. 7 Breakthrough Strategies to Resolve Marriage Challenges Fast

T

he newly released book “The 90-Minute Marriage Miracle, The only guide you will ever need to making love last,” makes its international debut and is now available everywhere online including Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Balboa Press. Written by local Executive and Peak Performance Coach Jeff Forte, the book sets a new standard for easily understood and immediately useful solutions to today’s relationship challenges. Forte highlights 7 breakthrough strategies that address the core issues that prevent people from having happy successful marriages. Forte says “Most people simply don’t know what to do to sustain love and passion long term, and they make simple mistakes that devastate the relationship. If we didn’t have great role models for marriage, where did we learn what to do to stay deeply connected with our partners?” In Breakthrough #6 Tropical Storms, Forte writes, “Your relationship suffers and so do you when being right becomes more important than the relationship.” There are specific step by step instructions for men and women about how to handle the emotions that surface when the individual partners are under stress. Forte will be doing a series of workshops over the next few months to teach people about these 7 breakthrough strategies which he believes are the keys to sustaining love and passion. The title of the book The 90-Minute Marriage Miracle is based on his work with a couple that he helped return from the doorstep of divorce back to love again in 90 minutes, and neither partner thought it was possible. West Hartford Yoga Announces WHY Power Teacher Training 2014 A Simple Detox Introduction

M

any people have an interest in participating in a detox program, although hesitate for multiple reasons. Among the most common of these reasons includes apprehension towards the commitment involved, a lack of knowledge about how to do a detox, and the uncertainty of what Dr. Teresa Spano will happen throughout. In these situations, people sometimes find it helpful to ease into a detox with a few easy altered dietary and lifestyle changes. An important first step in detoxification is eliminating the toxins from entering your body as much as you can. Do this by eating organically, and choosing grass fed antibiotic and hormone free animal products. Choose more natural cleaning products, and cosmetics to prevent further toxic exposure. Another simple step to gently promote detoxification is with the addition of hot lemon water to your morning routine. To do this, squeeze half an organic lemon into hot, not boiling, water, and drink. Among the various benefits of this act, is that lemons have many benefits from aiding with digestion, they act as a diuretic to encourage flushing of toxins, help to balance pH, and promote healing. The last simple step is to ensure you are also conducting a mental detox as well. To do this, provide yourself ample opportunity to get enough sleep each night, perhaps more than you normally allow yourself. Try meditation, or long walks to help clear your mind, and unplug from the constant commotion electronics provide. If you are interested in further detoxification, contact Dr. Teresa Spano at Glastonbury Naturopathic Center (860) 657-4105. Join us for our next 10 Day Detox on Tuesday November 12, 2013. Enlightenment

M

ost people I know only find enlightenment through their emotional or physical difficulties. That is a sad statement. Wouldn’t it be far better to be educated about life and prepared for its difficulties by the wisdom of others, rather than to need your own break down in order to become strong? Many painful events become our blessings because of what they teach us and the voids they fill in our lives. I believe it is better to be blessed by wise parents, teachers and spiritual leaders than by adversity. Others learn the hard way that the darkness leads them to the light just as charcoal under pressure becomes a diamond. Again a painful journey through the tunnel of darkness seeking the enlightenment. My writing and today’s books have nothing new to say. We may have new stories but they are only repeating ancient wisdom. So read the wisdom of the sages and learn from those who have gone before us. Which path you take makes little difference. The themes of all the great spiritual leaders of the past have much in common. So if you seek enlightenment get started by paying attention to what has been said and don’t wait for a personal disaster to bring you the gift of enlightenment. You may know the saying, "If you seek enlightenment, seek it as a man whose hair is on fire seeks water". It takes that kind of desire to truly face the light. What has helped me most was my search for the answer to why we have a world filled with pain and difficulties. As a physician I saw much suffering that seemed to make no sense. Ultimately I realized it was to give our acts of compassion meaning and that what was evil was to not respond to the person with the affliction. We have free will, and when we choose to love, it is a choice that is meaningful. The free will allows us the opportunity to become co-creators and, hopefully, some day we will create a family of man and our own Garden of Eden. As a surgeon I know we are one family, despite our actions, because we are all the same color inside. A veterinarian friend of mine listed five points necessary to train animals properly. As I listened to her list I realize it is what the enlightened give to each other. They are Love, Trust, Respect, Consistency and Commitment. So the enlightened treat people as well as they do their pets. The questions I would ask you to consider to help yourself awaken and see the light are: 1. What is evil? 2. Who can you hate? 3. Who can you love? 4. Who is the enemy? 5. Who is the Lord you work for? 6. What do you need to say that you haven’t said? 8

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

I won’t answer for you, but as you seek enlightenment the correct answers will make themselves apparent. The last point is that when you are enlightened you will understand the power of love. So ask yourself why we say kill with kindness, torment with tenderness, love is blind, love thine enemies and love thy neighbor as thyself. Therein lies the answer to life and enlightenment. Several years ago I fell from our roof, hit my head and developed amnesia, which improved my marriage and family life dramatically. I learned a great deal from the benefits of amnesia. When my memory came back I had a difficult time with my wife and children because now I remembered all their faults. A therapist friend said she could save me from years of therapy. I asked her how. She handed me something and said go home and read this and live what it says. What she handed me was I Corinthians 1:13 which describes all the benefits of amnesia and more through love. I tell you this so that until you are enlightened and capable of loving try amnesia in your relationships and daily life. It will help. Or if that doesn’t appeal to you, the next time you don’t know what to do and seek to make the enlightened choice ask yourself, "What would Lassie do now?" If you prefer denominational or religious figures as

choices there are a few I can recommend but choose wisely because animals are complete and man is not. Or so the Bible tells us. Good Carbs, Bad Carbs...It’s Anything but Simple Chemical structure of glucose

By Paul D. Tortland, D.O.

G

ood carbs, bad carbs. High glycemic, low glycemic. Simple or complex. High carb, low carb, Paleo, Mediterranean, Atkins. When it comes to carbohydrates, sugars, diet and nutrition, it seems as if it is anything but simple. Let’s see if we can make some sense out of all the nonsense. Carbohydrates are one of three types of macronutrients in the human diet. The other two macronutrients are fats and proteins. All foods that we consume are comprised of at least one, usually two, and rarely all three, macronutrients. Let’s set the record straight, right out of the blocks. By definition, ALL carbohydrates are sugars. The only differences lie in the complexity of the chains of sugars. The following is a sample list of foods that are primarily carbohydrates:

Fructose is the sugar found most commonly in fruit. (This is not to be confused with high fructose corn syrup, which is a chemically derived artificial sweetener almost twice as sweet as glucose.)

Glucose

Chemical structure of fructose Sucrose is common table sugar. It is a simple carbohydrate made up of one molecule of glucose linked to one molecule of fructose. Fructose Chemical structure of table sugar, sucrose

• Breads, cereals, grains and pastas • Fruits • Vegetables • Most junk food • Most sports drinks • Beer & wine

Simple vs. Complex Carbohydrates Simple carbohydrates are sugars made up of just one or two sugar molecules. Complex carbohydrates, on the other hand, consist of many sugar molecules linked together into chains. The simplest sugar is glucose. Glucose is the elemental sugar that virtually every cell in the body burns for energy. Even proteins and most fats need to get converted to glucose (a process called gluconeogenesis) before they can be used for fuel.

Sucrose Now look at the structure of amylopectin, the main sugar in starch. Chemical structure of amylopectin

Amylopectin 10

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

Note that amylopectin is just a very long chain of glucose molecules linked together, with additional side chains also made up of glucose. The side chains branch off after every 30 or so glucose molecules. And the side chains themselves contain an average of 30 glucose molecules each. In all, amylopectin molecules may contain up to two million glucose units! This is a perfect example of a very complex carbohydrate!

So What’s the Difference? Why is it important to know the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates? This is where the glycemic index comes into play. The glycemic index is a measure of how fast various carbohydrates break down and raise blood sugar. Carbs that are quickly digested and release glucose into the blood stream rapidly have a high glycemic index. Carbs that take longer to digest, and that therefore raise blood sugar more slowly, are said to be low glycemic. The body responds to elevated blood sugar levels by releasing the hormone insulin from the pancreas to help metabolize the sugars and reduce blood sugar levels. This is because high blood sugar levels are potentially very damaging and dangerous to the body. The rate at which insulin is released is largely dictated by how fast blood sugar levels rise. The faster the rise in blood sugar (due to high glycemic carbs), the faster the rise of insulin levels. Now here’s the rub. While insulin is largely responsible for lowering blood sugar, it is also the main fat storage hormone! As insulin levels rise, the machinery that stores fat gets turned on in direct relation. Higher insulin levels mean greater fat storage. Type 2 diabetes is a problem of too much insulin production (largely due to what’s known as insulin resistance). What do most Type 2 diabetics look like? That’s right, they’re overweight! Too much insulin means too much fat storage. So, as you can guess, simple carbs, most of which are very low glycemic, stimulate rapid and large insulin secretions, while complex carbs, which take longer to break down and digest, cause a much slower and gradual rise in insulin.

The “Good” and “Bad” of Carbs No naturally occurring carbohydrate, whether simple or complex, is inherently “good” or “bad.” Everything that God created is, in its natural state, healthy. The problems arise when we: • Consume too many simple carbohydrates • Consume too many complex carbohydrates • Scientifically chemically alter the natural sugars Before the advent of modern food production and processing, people ate only what was grown in a particular season, and the food itself was not subject to processing or manipulation. White sugar and flour didn’t exist. Preservatives didn’t exist. Genetically modified wheat didn’t exist. Refrigeration didn’t exist. And “super sizing” didn’t exist! No surprise—obesity, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and many other degenerative and inflammatory conditions were rare. It should be obvious at this point what happens when we eat too many simple carbs. A diet of simple sugars and junk food causes persistently high insulin levels that, over time, will wreak havoc on the body, potentially causing Type 2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol problems, heart disease, gout, and other inflammatory and degenerative conditions.

In 1905 the average North American consumed 5 pounds of sugar per person each year. By 2009 that amount skyrocketed to 150 pounds of sugar per person each year, with 63 pounds of that alone being high fructose corn syrup! Most evidence now points to increased sugar intake as the cause of our obesity epidemic, heart disease, and other health problems, not fat consumption. Special mention needs to be made here about fruit. While fruit naturally contains the simple sugar fructose, there is relatively little fructose in one piece of fruit. For example, a medium sized orange contains about 6 grams of fructose. But an 8 ounce glass of orange juice has over 14 grams of fructose! In addition, the fruit, when eaten whole, has lots of natural fiber. The fiber significantly slows the release of the sugar into the blood stream. That glass of orange juice has no fiber (pulp doesn’t count!). So the entire fructose load gets dumped into the blood stream, overwhelming the body’s ability to metabolize it. Getting back to our ancestors, most of the carbohydrates they ate were both very complex and also extremely high in fiber. It has been estimated that 200 years ago the average person consumed 200-300 grams of fiber a day. Today the average is 20-30 grams! Fiber, as noted above with fruit, drastically slows the digestion of the carbohydrates, allowing the body to process the released sugars in a healthy way. But eating too many complex carbohydrates can also be a bad thing! Here it’s more an issue of portion control. (Note that I did NOT say “calorie control.” The whole “calories in, calories out” argument is fallacious. But that’s a topic for another article.) Eating too many complex carbs, while causing a much slower insulin response, will still end up with persistently high insulin levels and the health derangements that accompany it.

Scientifically Altered Sugars We all know that simple sugars are bad for us. But how exactly is white sugar made? The answer is important, as we’ll see when talking about other sugars.

12

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

White sugar comes from the natural sugar cane plant. Sugar cane, in its raw and native form, is considered a whole food. It is brimming with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, phytonutrients, and fiber. It’s actually nourishing! When eaten as a whole package, raw sugar cane is a very low glycemic food. Raw sugar cane is passed through giant press rollers that squeeze the juice out. The juice, which contains dirt and fibers from the cane, is collected in large tanks. From there it gets “cleansed” to remove the dirt & debris, by getting treated with calcium hydroxide—slaked lime. (Calcium hydroxide is also used in water and sewage treatment plants.) The juice is then heated to evaporate the water, leaving a dark syrup that, at this point, still has lots of nutrients and antioxidants. Next the juice is boiled to remove the rest of the water. But in the process, all of the natural enzymes and many of the nutrients are destroyed by the heat. As the water is boiled off small sucrose crystals are added to initiate the “seeding.” This starts the crystallization process. The crystals are “purified,” first by mixing them with a heavy syrup then heating it to dissolve the outer part of the crystal (containing the last bit of nutrients) but not the inner part. The remaining crystals are separated from the syrup by centrifuge, after which they are again “purified” by melting and mixing again with slaked lime. The clarified syrup is decolorized by passing it through charcoal filters, boiled again and repeatedly crystallized and centrifuged to produce white sugar. Raw sugar cane, containing only 15% sucrose and lots of nutrients, ends up as table sugar containing 99.8% pure sucrose and NO nutrients! Oh, by the way, sugar made from sugar beets ends up the same—essentially the same process minus a few steps. So we head to the store and buy “Sugar in the Raw,” organic raw sugar, or turbinado, thinking that we’re being health conscious. But they basically all go through the same process as white sugar, with varying amounts of molasses added back to produce sugars of various brown colors. They are clever products of marketing, but they are absolutely no better for you than the “white death” of table sugar.

Pink, Blue, and Yellow Packets Saccharine (Sweet’N Low®) was accidentally discovered in 1879. A German chemist was working on making new products from toluene, a hazardous liquid derived from making tar from coal, and used in making gasoline and paint thinner. He accidentally spilled some new clear liquid on his hands, and later that night at dinner noticed that his food tasted sweet. Thus saccharine was borne! In 1977 the FDA proposed a ban on it. In 1981 saccharine was listed by both the U.S. and Canadian governments as a human carcinogen. But in 2000 Congress intervened and removed warning notices from saccharine. Aspartame (Equal® and others) was “discovered” in 1965 during experiments to find a new drug to treat ulcers. Some bubbling liquid spilled over the edge of a beaker onto the chemist’s hand. Later, when he licked his finger to pick up a piece of paper, he too noticed an oddly sweet taste, and aspartame was created. The FDA once listed over 92 different symptoms linked to the use of aspartame, but under pressure from Congress (who was getting heavily lobbied), the FDA backed off. Sucralose (Splenda®) has since become the darling of alternative sweeteners. But its path to glory is also clouded. A British chemist of Indian origin was working on ways to use sugar to create new insecticides. Due to difficulty translating English, the chemist thought he was told to “taste” the new product, when in reality he had been told to “test” the product! He liked the sweet taste, and sucralose was thus invented. While Splenda is marketed as being “natural” because it comes from sugar, that’s only a partial truth. Sucralose does not exist in nature. Sucrose undergoes a 5-step process involving many caustic chemicals that substitutes several harmful chlorine atoms. The manufacturers claim the chlorine is no more harmful than the chlorine in table salt (sodium chloride). Naturally occurring chlorine can be beneficial, but artificial chlorine is potentially dangerous.

Other Unhealthy Sugars By now most of us are aware of the dangers of high fructose corn syrup. But other sugars are also far from ideal. The current poster child for healthy sugar alternatives is agave. Agave is a highly processed sweetener with even more fructose than high fructose corn syrup! Agave production is similar to how white corn starch gets converted to high fructose corn syrup. But agave can contain up to 90% fructose, almost all of which gets converted to fat!

Truvia has also become popular as a sugar substitute. Rather than the product of experimental errors, Truvia was intentionally designed. While it begins with the leaf of the stevia plant, the stevia is “refined” to remove the component that causes the characteristic aftertaste of stevia. The resulting purified product does not exist in the native stevia plant, or anywhere in nature for that matter.

Healthy Sugars While a complete list is beyond the scope of this article, two of the best sugar alternatives are stevia and raw organic sugar cane. Stevia is derived from the leaf of the stevia plant. As such it is actually an herb, not a sugar. It was discovered in 1899, and over 500 scientific studies have been done showing its benefits: • Can help regulate blood sugar levels • Can help in weight reduction (stevia has no calories) • Can inhibit the growth of oral bacteria • When applied to skin, can help heal cuts and improve eczema and acne • Contains inulin, a natural soluble fiber that can aid digestion

But buyer beware. Not all products marketed as “stevia” are the same. Some, marketed as “stevia extract,” contain added sugar, such as maltodextrose. The ingredients should list only inulin and stevia extract, nothing else. Raw, unrefined whole organic sugar cane is as close as you can get to the original sugar cane without actually gnawing on the cane itself! It is a coarse granular crystal, medium brown in color. Like white sugar, the cane is pressed and the juice is collected. But the juice is heated over a low heat (thereby preserving the integrity of the nutrients) to create a syrup, being stirred gently with paddles. Crystals form naturally as the water evaporates. The crystals are ground in a sieve, producing a coarse, brown grainy sugar that retains almost all of the health benefits of the original cane. Again, beware of the tactics of unscrupulous marketers. “Evaporated cane juice” and “evaporated cane sugar” are NOT the same as raw organic cane sugar. They are no better than refined white sugar.

Summary Carbohydrates form an essential part of a healthy diet. But the nature and amount of carbs need to be carefully considered. We should try our best to eliminate as much refined sugar and dangerous sugar substitutes from our diets as possible, and we should choose healthier complex carbs instead. Healthy carbs include: • Quinoa • Spelt • Buckwheat • Whole wheat (preferably non-GMO) • Millet • Steel-cut oats • Rye • Brown rice Don’t forget that all vegetables and fruits are also carbohydrates. Choosing green leafy and brightly colored vegetables over the more starchy ones is a better strategy overall. And choosing fruits that are naturally lower in sugar and higher in fiber, such as berries, is also a wiser choice. What we eat with our carbohydrates is also important. Looking to nature for guidance on food combinations, we see that carbohydrates are naturally paired with proteins (beans, legumes), but rarely with fats. Likewise, fats are commonly bound with proteins (animal meats, fish, eggs, cheese), but rarely with carbohydrates. So a general dietary principle is to have meals that combine either protein and carbs or protein and fats, but limit those meals that combine carbs and fat. Remember that ALL carbohydrates raise insulin, and insulin increases the fat storage machinery. Also, eat smaller meals more frequently, rather than a few large meals. This keeps insulin levels lower, leading to better weight control and better health.

Is Your Stomach Really Producing Too Much Acid? Healthy Digestion is Key to Overall Health

By Ann Aresco, ND

D

igestion is one of the key systemic processes that controls our bodily functions and promotes our overall health and wellbeing. Naturopathic medicine examines the logic behind how our bodies work as a whole. N.D.s encourage patients to become more aware of how their bodies function so that they can figure out what they need to do to correct their own health issues. We are all unique and so are our conditions, symptoms and treatments. This is especially true as it relates to digestion. When we examine digestive issues using a logical, natural approach, we can learn quite a bit by looking at the big picture, as opposed to focusing on small, symptomatic snippets. For example, when patients suffer from heartburn or indigestion, most people assume that they have too much acid that is being produced in the stomach. They think that this acid splashes into the esophagus, causing their heartburn. It’s not that simple; there’s a lot more going on when you dig deeper. In fact, a naturopathic approach can reveal more about how our digestion works as a complete system, which often results in a resolution of the issue without the use of pharmaceutical drug intervention.

Don’t Cover Up Symptoms The goal of a drug or a medical intervention is to stop a symptom, but it does not necessarily address the root of the problem. Drugs often create additional symptoms that then require even more medical intervention. Naturopathic doctors always strive to utilize safe, natural treatments for health issues first, before resorting to drugs. This is an integral value that is universally shared among N.D.s. A common medical intervention for heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drug that stops acid production. While heartburn is a significant and painful symptom that certainly needs to be addressed, simply putting out the fire with a PPI isn’t a logical long-term solution. We need to 16

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

manage acid production in a more self-sustaining, safe way, since it could lead to damage in the esophagus and is a risk factor for esophageal cancer and a condition called Barrett’s Esophagus. If we look at reflux from another angle, we have to ask: • Who usually suffers from GERD? Middle-aged to older individuals. • Why would the stomach suddenly begin to overproduce acid? (It doesn’t.) • What products of the body are likely to begin increasing in production as we age? (No it is NOT testosterone. That is wishful thinking. This is another trick question. We don’t start increasing the production of anything, including acid, as we age.) • Can acid reflux be a sign of a separate issue and not just the overproduction of acid? Yes, it can: poor digestion of unhealthy food choices, too many drugs, and other health issues that impact digestion causing malabsorption. When we experience a symptom, it’s important to recognize that the symptom can reflect opposite spectrums of a particular health issue. For example, a lack of acid in the stomach can actually cause similar symptoms to those caused by excessive acid. In both situations we need to address and correct the cause of improper acid production, instead of just covering up the symptom.

Stomach Acid is Important Our stomach produces acid for a reason. If we stop this function with a PPI drug, isn’t it going to affect and disrupt other functions in the body? Yes, it will. Stomach acid is essential for digesting food and breaking proteins down into amino acids. Minerals such as calcium need acid in order to begin the process of assimilating into the bloodstream so that the body can utilize them. This entire process doesn’t happen in the stomach alone, but acids and enzymes get the process started so that nutrients can be either assimilated or discharged.

Judi Stomach acid also serves another essential function—it protects our bodies. Because stomach acid can break down proteins, it protects us from foreign organisms. Bacteria and other dangerous organisms will not survive an acid bath in the stomach. But if you use a drug that stops acid production, then unwanted bacteria will be able to pass through and make you ill. The digestive tract is where our body gets exposure to the outside world. What we eat (for better or worse) goes into our digestive track and is assimilated into our body, even food sources that are unrecognizable to our organs. For example, the human body does not recognize and properly handle man-made ingredients such as artificial sweeteners, dyes, pesticides, genetically modified foods, etc. Once we consume food, our body can break it down and use it, store it, eliminate it, or react to it as a food allergy. If you consume an ingredient that the body doesn’t need or recognize, do you really want it stored someplace? What if, over time, your body decides that it can’t handle your “food” choices and rebels? The result could be indigestion, heartburn due to an underproduction of acid, GI disorders, systemic

inflammation, and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. In fact, many of the conditions the human body develops can be directly attributed to the food we eat, and what we digest or do not digest properly.

PPI Drugs vs. Naturopathic Approach Because acid assimilates calcium in the body, taking a PPI drug disrupts digestion to the point where people can develop osteoporosis. It took years for this to be publically reported because it takes a long time for the symptom to develop. Therefore the initial placebo-controlled double-blind studies that supported the drug simply couldn’t measure the risk of osteoporosis because the study wasn’t conducted for enough time to show the result. Simply stopping PPI medication will not resolve the osteoporosis. Although the drug’s label recommends short-term use, it often is used as a long-term treatment. What the label doesn’t explain is the rebound effect when you stop taking the drug. The heartburn comes back with a vengeance, causing you to think that you need the medication,

The first step in treating digestive issues with a naturopathic approach is to create a nutrition plan. Your N.D. will work with you to analyze your typical diet and address any deficiencies and unhealthy food choices. You’ll learn how to correct the problem starting from the source, and start building a dietary plan that is rich in vitamins and nutrients to build a solid foundation for your digestive health. Naturopathic physicians typically recommend whole foods, fruit, vegetables, and protein sources such as chicken and fish that are natural and organic. The goal is to turn the condition around by allowing the body to correct and heal itself. Symptoms can be treated with safe, natural supplements, botanical medicines, and homeopathic remedies. As symptoms are eliminated, you’ll be surprised that many of them are issues that you never thought were related to your digestive problems. As your digestion recuperates, the body returns to a state of balance and your overall health and wellbeing will improve. Organic Duck Breast with Ginger Carrot Puree, Ginger Orange Sauce and Sautéed Apples and Sweet Potatoes Ingredients: Organic Duck Breast 2-3 organic apples (sliced) 2-3 sweet potatoes (boiled & sliced) Salt, pepper Ginger Orange Sauce: 1.5 large shallots 2 cloves garlic 2 organic oranges 1/3 gal orange juice 1/8 cup brown sugar Ginger Carrot Puree 5 organic white and orange carrots 1 oz ginger To make the dish: Heat the skillet over medium-high heat. The duck has a lot of natural fat, so there is no need for oil. Add salt and pepper. Cook the organic duck breast for 2-3 minutes each side until golden. Place it in oven for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees and place back in skillet. Add 5-6 soup spoons of the ginger orange sauce and let it simmer a bit until it gets thicker and hot. Sauté the organic apple and sweet potatoes with some salt. Heat up the puree in a separate skillet. Plate the sauteed apples and sweet potatoes and the duck above them. Puree on the side and drizzle the sauce over the duck and around the plate. Ginger Orange Sauce: For 1 quart of sauce: In a large pot, saute 15 large shallots sliced thin, 2 minced garlic cloves, 2 organic oranges, 1/3 gallon of orange juice, 1/8 cup of brown sugar. It should have a smooth consistency. Set aside. Ginger Carrot Puree: Blend 5 organic carrots(white and orange) with 1oz of Ginger. Makes 1 quart. Do You Want a Problem Free Life?

W

e all have problems, and I’m a big fan of problems. Yes, they complicate your life but a life that’s truly problem free is a life that is truly boring. You might think you want this problem-free life but can you imagine sitting pool-side and getting your drink refilled constantly for 20 years? There’s a famous U-shaped curve in psychology that refers to anxiety and its potential benefits. If you have no anxiety, you are likely to perform at less than your maximum capacity. If you have too much anxiety, you’ll also have trouble performing well. A moderate amount of anxiety, however, can help you create a maximum performance. A similar kind of curve has also been found for problems and life satisfaction or well-being. People who had very few problems also had low levels of well-being and

20

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

life satisfaction whereas people with lots of problems also experienced poor life satisfaction. A moderate number of problems led to high levels of well-being. A meaning filled life can only happen if there are problems. It’s my personal philosophy that life is an individualized curriculum and that it’s only through its unique tutelage that we have the maximum capacity to develop in ways that can create tremendous satisfaction. So as much as we may bemoan our problems, they really do help us. Not only would we be bored without them, in the end we’d realize we had been cheated out of growth. It’s the story of the oyster and the pearl. Life is only beautiful when it is rich with experience, not when it is a limited 16 color display. Problems include all the things that get in the way of maximum life satisfaction. Poor health, difficult relationships,

anxiety about work or finances, and loss. are all problems most of us face within our lifetimes. And we are obsessed with finding solutions. We have lists, research, programs, trainers, therapists, pills, healers, and advisors. We look frantically for what we might have missed, or for the latest breakthrough information that will lead to a final cure. Cures and solutions are great. I’m not knocking those, and in fact I offer quite a lot of them. However, there’s a bigger problem we tend to miss in the noise, the real problem if you will: in our pursuit of fixing what’s wrong we have forgotten how to experience our lives. Simply put, we don’t feel our feelings. We skip over them, medicate them away, eat them, shove them deep into our arteries and move right to problem-solving. Instead of simply being still in the moment with our feelings, we jump into action. We yell, ignore, control and deny. Actions aren’t feelings, no matter how much we are hot under the collar while we do them. They are a substitute for the feeling experience; indeed they are used as ways to get rid of feelings. Thich Nhat Hanh is a Buddhist monk, teacher, philosopher and activist. He tells a wonderful story about washing dishes. To wash dishes, he says, you must know how to wash the dishes. The way to wash dishes is to fully experience washing the dishes. If you are only washing dishes in order to finish the dishes so that you can sit down and drink your tea, then you are not able to experience washing the dishes. He explains that you are then not able to experience

Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis A Powerful and Natural Way to Combat Obesity & Lose Weight

Diane Bahr-Groth, CH, TFT-Adv

A

ccording to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Obesity is common, serious and costly.” More than 69% of adults are overweight or obese (2009-2010). “Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death,” with estimated annual medical costs of $147 billion in 2008. The report states that, for people who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30+, “even a modest weight loss, such as 5 to 10% of your total body weight, is likely to produce health benefits, such as improvement in blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugars.” The Mind Body Transformation Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis program may be the solution for those in search of a natural and healthy method to lose their potentially unhealthy excess weight without the high cost, risks and side effects of invasive surgery.

“No Diet” Weight Loss The new Mind Body Transformation Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis weight-loss program can naturally help people make better food choices, lose weight and put food in its proper perspective. This technique is a safe and healthy alternative to weight-loss

22

surgery and is designed to replicate the effects, results and benefits of the gastric band or bypass surgery without going under the knife. Best of all, there is no diet, no deprivation and no hospital stay. All change begins with hypnosis and the mind. Hypnosis is widely recognized by the American Medical Association and researchers as a safe, natural and enjoyable state of deep physical and emotional relaxation. While relaxing in a comfortable recliner the subconscious mind is given suggestions that the stomach is much smaller, the size of a golf ball, as if the gastric band were surgically installed. The suggestions prevent over-eating and encourage smaller portion sizes resulting in a measurable reduction of body fat and inches.

A 95% Success Rate This unique and very specialized concept was originally developed in Europe and has been featured on TV and in newspapers in the U.S. and abroad, detailing the exciting and dramatic behavioral and weight loss results. The clinical trials of this unique hypnosis program have shown a 95% success rate with the average weight loss of 7 lbs. the first week and 1 to 2 lbs. weekly thereafter, all without deprivation or dieting.

Additional Tools Eliminate Self-Sabotage Mind-Body Transformation’s Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis program differs from all others in that it is an advanced technique of Hypnosis, Thought Field Therapy and Applied Kinesiology. Thought Field Therapy is a powerful stress, fear and anxiety reduction tool created by a psychologist, Dr. Roger Callahan, that helps create almost instantaneous changes in thoughts, feelings and emotions. Applied Kinesiology (AK or muscle testing) is used to access information from the subconscious mind to facilitate change. It is similar to using the body as a lie detector test to uncover emotional blockages which can cause a psychological reversal of self-sabotaging behavior like emotional eating. These techniques help clients access and release limiting beliefs and decisions or blockages that may be preventing them from accomplishing their goals. Most people are psychologically reversed about losing weight and therefore may continue a pattern of sabotage, stress and a cycle of failure that can prevent them from losing weight. Psychological reversals cause many people to feel as though they have a good angel on one shoulder and a bad angel on the other, and the bad angel is winning! The emotions and negative responses related to the root cause are addressed at the very first session. These tools are used at each hypnosis session to evaluate progress and eliminate self-sabotage while creating greater effectiveness and faster results.

Five Sessions The Mind Body Transformation Virtual Gastric Band program consists of a series of five hypnosis sessions personalized for a client’s specific needs and scheduled weekly. The first session may be two to three hours in length, and subsequent sessions are usually an hour each. A pre-recorded hypnosis support CD is used daily to reinforce the healthy eating and weight-loss changes desired. The fifth hypnosis session is recorded for the client’s personal goals and continued success. Mind Body Transformation clients have lost 7 lbs., 9 lbs. and even 11 lbs. in just their 1st week! The client satisfaction rate for this unique weight-loss program is remarkably high. Client weight loss varies from person to person based on activity levels, age and motivation, but most people experience profound changes in stress levels, eating habits and food choices as they quickly begin to reduce clothing sizes and lose weight. Some clients have lost 20 to 23 lbs. in the first few weeks, without feelings of deprivation and without dieting.

Anyone who has made a personal commitment to change behavior or improve their health and life realizes how difficult it can be to institute and maintain regular and positive improvements and responses for wellness in today’s hectic and chaotic world. The Mind Body Transformation Hypnosis Virtual Gastric Band program can help create healthier, natural lifestyle changes for those who desire to eat more consciously and especially for those struggling to lose weight. Is Your Partner Pushing Your Buttons?

By Jeff Forte, CSIC, CME

I

f you’ve been in your relationship for any reasonable period of time you know that there are times when you don’t always agree with your partner. Maybe you’ve had an argument or two over the years…maybe more than two hundred of them. In any disagreement or misunderstanding, emotions have a tendency to take over. The self protective mechanism kicks in and the fight to be right is on. Defending your position becomes what matters most. However, the more you defend, the more the other person feels the need to assert their position more aggressively… which causes escalation on your part… and then they escalate further….. and then someone says something they regret….and then sometimes someone says something that cannot be forgiven….and the relationship begins to die. The reason for the disagreement or argument is usually not something big. Have you ever been there? Maybe you don’t even remember what caused it. What people do and say in escalating disagreements can be devastating to the relationship. Your partner will push your buttons and get to you from time to time. You will push your partner’s buttons unknowingly and upset them. In the heat of the moment, anything is possible. What would happen if you met this button pushing without resistance? What if you responded back in a way that was light hearted, or loving, or playful and unpredictable, would anything change? If your partner is upset and lashes out at you, and you say “honey, I love you so much and I am so grateful to have you in my life” to whatever tone they use with you, what would happen? Would the argument escalate? Not likely. This one sentence has enough power to completely shift the situation. If you are able to maintain a soft tone and remember why you love this person and why you are with them you will respond with your heart. And that will immediately stop the escalation. Test this out for yourself. The next time you find yourself in a defensive position arguing with your significant other say softly “Maybe you‘re right, I know that I love you so much and I was just thinking about the first moment that I knew I loved you.” If your tone is right, there will be no more argument. Maybe.…just maybe….this will save your relationship some day. We are only limited by our willingness to be creative. If what you are doing is not giving you a result that is beneficial to your relationship, maybe it’s time to try something else. It takes about 10 seconds of courage. Are you up for it?

When people push our buttons, we don’t have to push back. We can soften and respond with love, humor, playfulness, or lightness. Even silence can occasionally be helpful. In my own marriage I have responded to a tone of upset with playfulness often. For example, “I love it when you’re grumpy, it kind of turns me on,” or “ Did you say you wanted a hug, because I need one,” or “ It’s Ok, I can take it, keep going, I’m here for you,” or “If you weren’t so damn sexy, I’d leave you alone.” Maybe this seems ridiculous to you. Maybe you would never act that way because after all, you are a mature adult. We all take things way too seriously from time to time. Engage the playful, funloving, outrageous, silly, and happy-go-lucky part of yourself when there is tension in the air. You’ll like it and so might your partner! The tone that you use when you are pushing back is everything. You are pushing softness back into the space that something harsh sounding came from. That harshness cannot survive when it’s met with compassion, or silliness, or playfulness, or humor. Don’t take my word for it, test it out for yourself and see what happens. I want you to really understand the power that you have to create whatever you want in your relationship. The next time you find yourself in a disagreement that’s escalating with your partner, what can you say that will soften the situation? Hint: Use your heart, not your head… When you know in advance that you can do something to change things in an instant, you give yourself the ability to mend difficult moments quickly. It can happen in seconds. All escalating arguments are based on cycles that typically lack compassion, heartfelt understanding, creativity, tenderness, and loving empathy. When people fight, they are usually stuck in their heads and not their hearts. When one person gets back to their heart, it can shift the entire situation immediately, and that would be a very good thing for your relationship. A Mindful Approach To Weight Loss

M

illions of people try to lose weight, but are unsuccessful. Jumping from diet to diet, they lose weight only to gain it back. It becomes a cycle that can continue for decades, often resulting in disappointment, frustration and depression. There is, however, a solution.

Weight Loss Cannot Come from Diet Alone People’s thoughts and emotions weigh them down as much as the foods they eat. Mental messages such as, “I will never lose weight,” and, “I hate my body,” undermine one’s ability to successfully and permanently lose weight. Addressing such negative mental messages and emotions is as important as diet and exercise.

Thoughts and Weight Loss Albert Einstein understood that everything is made up of energy, including thoughts. Each unique thought has an energetic frequency, and an energetic effect. To better understand human thought and emotion, energy can be categorized as either catabolic or anabolic. Thoughts, emotions, and actions based on fear, worry, and anger are catabolic. Inversely, those that are positive, creative, and nonjudgmental are anabolic. Frequent worry about losing weight and negative self-talk produces excess catabolic or destructive energy in the body, which is counterproductive to losing weight. The first step toward permanent weight loss starts in the mind. Depending on how a person chooses to think, feel, and act, a certain reality will be created.

Step #1- Lose The Thoughts That Weigh You Down Are your thoughts about yourself generally anabolic or catabolic? What emotions stem from your thoughts? Try a simple exercise. Look in the mirror, take two deep breaths and affirm what you truly desire for yourself. For example, “I love my body.” “I love and approve of myself exactly as I am.” As you state your affirmations, notice how you feel. Most people feel frustrated or think that the exercise is meaningless. This reaction stems from old patterns of negative self-talk. If this is your experience and you want to change it, you may benefit from reading “The Only Diet There Is” by Sondra Ray, attending mind/body workshops, or hiring a life coach. Learning to think differently is like building a muscle. It takes time and repetition. The good news is that a daily practice of positive affirmations can launch the first steps toward change. Weight loss will happen, but the real goal is to love yourself the way you are. Remember, there are plenty of skinny people who are miserable.

Step #2: Lose the Cravings that Weigh You Down Do you need coffee to feel energized in the morning, again around 10am, and then 2pm? Many people experience their focus, mood, and energy to be wildly variable throughout the day because their body is out of balance. Notice how often you crave and consume sugar. Weight gain is directly related to our sugar intake, as excess sugar is stored as fat. When blood-sugar levels spike (especially after eating processed foods), the pancreas releases insulin to quickly bring the blood-sugar levels down. A result of low blood sugar is exhaustion, which causes us to reach for more sugar or coffee. This up and down cycle is very dangerous to the body. Observe how your body responds to what you consume and be mindful of your cravings. Experiment with your diet and begin to remove the food or drink that adversely affects you. Your ultimate goal is to feel energized and balanced all day long.

Step #3 – Gain The Strength You Need To Lose Weight You have the power within you to create anything that you desire. Ignite this power. Make time for yourself to do something that you love for at least ten minutes every day. What are you most passionate about? What makes time stop for you? Think about these two questions and dedicate time to whatever it is that makes you happy. Let life be your quick pick-me-up, not food. Take a few minutes to center or meditate. You may start with just two minutes a day. Regardless of how long you meditate to begin with, you will benefit. You will begin to raise anabolic energy, reduce stress, and increase your immune system. How do you meditate? You can download a guided meditation, focus on your breathing, or take a simple introduction to meditation class. Slow down your mind, relax, and breathe deeply. Practicing even one of these tips can result in you experiencing a shift for yourself. Remember to focus on the thoughts, feelings and emotions that are in alignment with what you want to attract in your life. Begin to tune into the messages your body is sending you in terms of food and drink. You deserve to experience pure happiness, radiant health, success, fulfillment, and permanent weight loss. Invest in yourself and start living the life you deserve today! Kristen Werblow M.A. is a Certified Life Coach, Energy Leadership Master Practitioner, and Reiki Master. t’s that time of year again. What should be a time of happiness and joy often turns to weeks of rushing, coming and going, planning for gifts and parties - all on top of the normal everyday family and work schedules that many people keep. The added stress can be burdensome at best. For quick relief, consider aromatherapy. Below, are some scents that may be able to help with the stress: • Clary Sage: Is used for its relaxing benefits. It helps to relieve stress and bring emotional balance. • Chamomile: Relaxes the mind and body, and reduces skin inflammations. • Eucalyptus: Stimulates the mind helping to improve concentration. Also used as a nasal and lung decongestant. • Lavender: Due to its relaxing and tension relieving benefits, it's used to relieve stress, anxiety and headaches.

ating more cranberries this holiday season? Rich in Vitamins C & A, cranberries contain a substance that affects the acidity of the urine and acts as a bactericide. A daily glass of cranberry juice will help prevent and treat cystitis, and discourage kidney stones. Fresh cranberries and cranberry juice are used in the treatment of prostate problems and urinary tract infections. Crushed cranberries, boiled in distilled water and skinned, can be added to a cup of warm water to help overcome an asthma attack. Be careful, though, cranberries contain large amounts of oxalic acid, and should not be eaten raw.

W

e spend billions of dollars each year on skin care products that promise the fountain of youth, when in fact, some actually contribute to the aging process. If you read the label of ingredients you may be surprised at what you are truly applying to your skin and how it affects the skin and your overall health. The human skin is a remarkable organ but is often taken for granted. Most people are content with their skin until dryness, oiliness, a rash or a wrinkle rouses attention. But once you know and understand how our skin functions, you may consider the importance of the skin and the quality of the content of the skincare products you use. Using natural skincare can make a difference.

Face the Facts

Face the Facts: 1. An adult’s skin comprises between 15 and 20 percent of the total body weight. 2. Each square centimeter has 6 million cells, 5000 sensory points, 100 sweat glands and 15 sebaceous glands. Your skin is constantly being regenerated. Cells begin in the lower layers of the skin called the dermis, which is supplied with blood vessels and nerve endings. The cell migrates upward until it reaches the bottom portion of the epidermis, which is the outermost skin layer. The cell eventually makes it to the surface then dies and sheds. Two to three billion skin cells are shed daily. The body expends this effort to replace the skin every month because the skin constitutes the first line of defense against dehydration, infection, injuries and temperature extremes. Skin cells can detoxify harmful substances with many of the same enzymatic processes the liver uses. The unbroken surface also prevents infectious organisms from penetrating into the systemic circulation. As a gatekeeper, the skin absorbs and uses nutrients applied topically. Because your skin can’t discriminate, the skin may absorb the synthetic chemicals often present in soaps, lotions, and other “skincare” products, which at best it has no use for and at worst can be toxic and irritating.

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. It is the first barrier between you and the outside world. The epidermis consists of three types of cells: keratinocytes, melanocytes and Langerhans cells. Keratinocytes, the cells that make the protein keratin, are the predominant type of cells in the epidermis. As they make their way through the process, they lose water, flatten out and move upward, eventually reaching the surface and hardening. This layer is called stratum corneum (dead skin cells) which slough off and are replaced with new ones. A pure natural organic skin peel will help this process and keep your skin fresh. Another significant group of cells in the epidermis are melanocytes, the cells producing melanin, which is the pigment responsible for skin tone and color. Finally, Langerhans cells are essentially the front door of the immune system in the epidermis. They prevent unwanted foreign substances from penetrating the skin. Since the human epidermis is renewed every 15-60 days, proper surface nutrition feeds the cells of the basal layer. Exfoliation will remove dry or damaged skin of the outer layer to allow newer cells

to be visible. The condition of your epidermis determines how “fresh” your skin looks and also how well your skin absorbs and holds moisture. Therefore, “feed your face”, an organic facial will begin to rejuvenate your skin so you look brighter and healthier. Continuing a healthy skin care regiment using organic products will maintain the health of your skin and your well-being. Skin treatments, such as Micro-Current and ECHO Oxygen mineral treatment expedite the healing process and help to reduce or slow the effects of aging. Natural Approaches for Childhood Reflux The Burning Question

I

n your dreams you are sitting quietly in a rocker while your newborn sucks contentedly until she drifts off to sleep. In reality, your beloved baby twists and turns uncomfortably while feeding, vomits after meals and cries pitiably for no apparent reason. Or maybe it is your toddler you worry about. He is a picky eater, complains of chronic abdominal pain, has a hoarse voice or persistent cough and complains that something burns in his chest. If these scenarios sound familiar, your child probably suffers from Gastroesophageal Reflux (GER), an increasingly common problem in children. While the distressing symptoms and feeding issues caused by

Does Guilt CRIPPLE Your Life? • Do you keep saying YES, when NO is a better answer? • Are you Paralyzed with Anxiety? • Do you feel frustrated - and Stuck? • There are good reasons for your misery...But the problem is fixable! Many try to resolve these issues on their own, thinking if they just keep trying, they will find success. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

GER are problematic enough, when poorly treated, the long term consequences are of even greater concern. The good news is that suffering children can find relief with simple yet often overlooked methods, before resorting to medication. When digestive function is normal, food passes from mouth to esophagus before entering the stomach. The stomach is extremely acidic, and this acid has multiple roles. It physically helps digest the food, and also signals the production of other compounds, such as enzymes, which continue the process of digestion. The stomach is coated in a protective mucousy layer which shields the gut from the effects of this powerful acid. Sometimes, the acid infused stomach contents move upward into the esophagus and even out the mouth, neither of which are shielded by the mucus coat, and cause a painful burning sensation. It is important to note that while GER is considered a functional problem in an otherwise healthy infant, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a more serious problem, but one that may benefit from the same interventions. Food allergies or intolerances are a common cause of reflux, and research shows that over half of breastfeeding infants with GER improve with the removal of cow’s

milk from mom’s diet. Formula fed babies may benefit from a switch to a dairy free formula. Other foods or food compounds, such as gluten, soy, eggs, caffeine, chocolate, broccoli and cabbage have also been implicated in GER, so dietary manipulation should be a first course of action when trying to reduce symptoms. Older children can also benefit by avoidance of problem foods. Probiotics are another safe and natural intervention that can relieve the discomfort of reflux. A study in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation found that infants given a strain of good bacteria called lactobacillus reuteri got relief from symptoms. The study infants were given 100 billion units of the probiotic and had significantly faster gastric emptying time than the controls; meaning their stomach contents passed more quickly into the intestine, leaving less opportunity for it to back up into the esophagus. In addition, the babies had only a quarter of the reflux episodes than the controls. Probiotics can also be effective in older children and even adults. Slippery Elm and Aloe Vera juice are gummy, mucilaginous herbs which offer protection against acid, as well as anti- inflammatory effects. They may loosen stool so it is important to start with small doses.

Placement of baby in a more upright position is an important and effective strategy, which takes advantage of gravity to keep food travelling through the digestive tract. Some babies will cry when laid flat, and feel far more comfortable when their head is elevated, especially during and after feeding. Smaller, more frequent feedings may also be better tolerated, and repeated burping can alleviate pressure. Older children should remain upright after meals and wear looser waistbands to relieve pressure on the abdomen. Increasing stomach acid is a surprising option for improving GER. The stomach in its natural state is already extremely acidic and a number of studies show that people with GERD do not have an excess of acid, but may in fact have too little. Since acid is so essential for normal digestion, a lack of acid slows the digestive process, leaving the contents of the stomach available to move back up the esophagus for too long. Giving a child fermented vegetables, apple cider vinegar or other acid promoting foods can relieve symptoms of GER.

Cautions H. Pylori is a bacteria which can survive the acidic environment of the stomach and has been implicated in ulcer formation and reflux. Paradoxically, treatment to eradicate the bacteria has been correlated with the emergence or worsening of reflux in some individuals. H. Pylori may also have a health promoting role in protecting against gastroesophageal cancer, so it is prudent to consider alternatives before treating the bacterial infection. Acid reducing medications, while frequently prescribed for infants and children with reflux, should be viewed with caution. These drugs, while used routinely, have never received FDA approval for infants, and were only recently approved for children. In addition, standard practice guidelines for these medications recommend only short term use, even in adults, yet they are often utilized for years at a time in developing children. Side effects of long term use include B vitamin deficiencies, zinc and iron deficits, magnesium wasting (which can cause constipation among other issues), and calcium deficiency, with long term consequences for bone health. They are also correlated with the development of food allergies. Finally, many of these prescription agents are difficult to wean, as they cause a rebound effect of more acid production which can be very painful. When feeding infants and children becomes a painful and upsetting experience due to GER, simple interventions such as dietary changes, probiotics, herbs and positioning changes are safe and effective methods of achieving relief. Physical and Emotional Benefits of Acupuncture for Fertility Patients

A

cupuncture works. I’m not saying that it works for everyone; no one fertility treatment does. But I know academically and intuitively that acupuncture can help my fertility patients get pregnant. I’ve read numerous clinical studies and participated in one study that show a link between acupuncture and increased pregnancy rates. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve seen firsthand the positive effects of acupuncture on my patients. My best days are when my patients have a successful pregnancy scan. Each of my patients has her own story about infertility—her own medical history, her own daily stresses, her own diagnosis—but there are some common threads to the women who walk through my door. More often than not, they are anxious about their chances of getting pregnant, and this stress is visible on their faces. When a patient leaves my office, she is calmer and open to pregnancy, whether she is receiving Western medical treatment or trying to get pregnant without it. Through acupuncture, patients are able to relax deeply, which is meaningful, but there is more to acupuncture.

Acupuncture for Women’s Health Fertility patients, in fact all of my patients, tend to have physical ailments that can be improved with acupuncture. For more than 12 years I have specialized in women’s health, and have been able to help regulate menstrual cycles, improve blood flow to the pelvic area and uterine lining, and reduce stress and anxiety issues such as insomnia, headaches and constipation. As acupuncture improves the energy flow in the body, it helps the body to function more efficiently. Acupuncture, like all Chinese Medicine, is based on pattern diagnosis. The physical and emotional symptoms someone experiences are part of their overall individual pattern. For example, a patient who comes to me for help getting pregnant might present with irregular periods, feelings of depression or irritability, and PMS symptoms that include breast tenderness, bloating, and cramping. I would treat this patient by focusing on moving the qi (life force or energy), and regulating menstruation. As the body becomes more balanced and the pattern of disharmony is addressed, she is more likely to conceive. In fact, other symptoms will improve as well, because acupuncture treats the whole person. People who receive regular acupuncture feel better overall. 30

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

The physical and emotional benefits of acupuncture are supported by numerous clinical studies. Like most fertility clinical studies, whether they take a closer look at acupuncture, stress management, medical treatment or another aspect of infertility treatment, there are conflicting conclusions. However, many clinical studies do support acupuncture during fertility treatment.

Acupuncture and In Vitro Fertilization A landmark study published in Fertility and Sterility reported that a group of women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) who received acupuncture both before and after embryo transfer had a higher pregnancy success rate (42.5%) than a control group that did not receive acupuncture treatment (26.3%). Since this study was published in 2006, there have been many others with similar results. In 2008–2009, RMACT participated in a clinical study to determine the efficacy of laser acupuncture on women during an IVF cycle. Like traditional acupuncture, laser acupuncture regulates qi and helps balance the body, except it uses infrared light energy to stimulate acupuncture points instead of needles. This low-dose therapeutic laser is sometimes referred to as a cold laser because the energy level is low and patients do not feel heat from it. The study found that laser acupuncture performed both before and after embryo transfer in an IVF cycle improved a woman’s chances of implantation by up to 15%. When friends are interested in acupuncture, I share this advice: 1. Find someone who will listen to you. Acupuncture needs to be tailored to each patient. It can be done while patients try to get pregnant naturally or alongside Western medical treatments such as IUI and IVF. I can see a patient once in conjunction with IVF transfer or regularly for several cycles. If a fertility patient wants to start acupuncture, it’s important for her to find someone who will develop a treatment for her individual needs. 2. Ask your acupuncturist to explain your treatment. Acupuncture uses ultrathin, sterile needles placed at strategic energy points around the body to regulate the flow of qi to restore balance and promote natural healing. An acupuncturist chooses the locations based on each patient’s needs. My patients appreciate having this explained to them. 3. Consider laser acupuncture if needles aren’t your thing. Laser is a viable alternative for individuals who have a fear of needles. Infertility is frustrating, stressful and discouraging. But the diagnosis also can be the first step to finding treatment that will lead to a pregnancy and a family. Fertility patients have options, and they should consider Eastern and Western medicine, as well as a

combination of the two. At RMACT, fertility treatment plans can include advanced medical care such as IVF and SelectCCS (an advanced form of preimplantation genetic diagnosis), nutrition counseling, stress reduction (e.g., Fertile Yoga class, meditation) and, of course, acupuncture. My goal is to help fertility patients, through acupuncture, to alleviate their physical ailments and to help them find deep relaxation, all of which will help make them more receptive to pregnancy. Peptic Ulcers

P

eptic ulcers are erosions found within the lining of the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. If the ulcer is in the stomach it is considered a gastric ulcer and if the ulcer is in the first part of the small intestine it is considered a duodenal ulcer. The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is abdominal pain, typically with a burning quality. The burning abdominal pain usually reduces after taking anti-acid medications as they neutralize stomach acid to prevent further irritation to the ulcerated areas. Duodenal ulcer pain is typically reduced when eating food, while gastric ulcer pain is exacerbated. Signs that a peptic ulcer has become severe include vomiting blood, dark black or bloody stool, chronic nausea, and changes in appetite and weight loss. If a peptic ulcer is suspected, an endoscopic procedure may be done to visualize the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. This procedure is done by inserting a camera down the esophagus to more closely inspect the tissue. X-ray of the gastrointestinal tract can help to pinpoint ulcers. X-rays are performed after the patient drinks a chalky

substance called barium to enhance any abnormalities. Often, diagnosis of a peptic ulcer can be done after analysis of current symptoms and risk factors by your physician and endoscopy or x-ray may not necessary.

Causes 1. Bacterial Helicobacter pylori, (H. pylori), is a bacteria that can live in the lining of the stomach. It is thought to be contracted via water, food and close contact. Overuse of acid blocking medications could increase ones risk of contracting H. Pylori as they reduce the body’s natural defense from bacterial diseases. Many individuals have H. pylori in their stomach lining and never develop ulcer disease; however, for some it can increase your risk of developing a peptic ulcer. Testing can be done to determine whether H. pylori is present and eradication of the bacteria is necessary if an ulcer is present.

Antibiotics and acid blockers are the most common standard treatment for ridding the H. Pylori from the stomach lining. Naturally, there are anti-bacterial botanicals and buffering agents that can be used to rid the gut of H. pylori. Testing should be done following a treatment regimen to ensure eradication of the H. pylori, as it can be difficult to get rid of.

2. Medication induced Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications (NSAIDS) including aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen and others are known to erode the lining of the stomach when abused and overused. Utilizing one or more of these medications on a regular basis increases your risk of peptic ulcer development. Other medications used to treat osteoporosis, called bisphosphinates, are also known for their ability to harm the inner lining of the stomach.

3. Lifestyle Alcohol is known to thin the lining of the stomach increasing the likelihood of ulcer development. Smoking cigarettes has been known to increase the risk of peptic ulcers, especially in those also infected with H. Pylori. High caffeine intake via coffee, chocolate and tea has been known to irritate the lining of the stomach and can increase the likelihood of ulcer disease.

Treatment Treatment of known or suspected peptic ulcers depends on the cause. Removing gastric lining irritants, eradication of pathogenic bacteria and healing of the gastrointestinal lining all must be addressed to heal and prevent another peptic ulcer.

1. Avoid Gastric Irritants Coffee, chocolate, peppermint, alcohol, spicy foods and high fat foods are known to further irritate and erode the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. While the ulcer is in its 32

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

healing process, it is essential to remove all of the potential irritating foods to allow the tissue to heal. Avoid supplementing with vitamin C while treatment for a peptic ulcer is underway as that can irritate an active ulcer. Avoid NSAID and Bisphosphinate Medications (medications for osteoporosis) when possible as they are known for the ulcer forming side effects. Ask your physician about alternatives for these medications.

2. Eradicate If H. pylori is found in the stomach lining, removal via antibiotic medication or antibacterial herbal formulas is essential. Prevention of re-infection with H. pylori includes reducing the use of antiacid medications as they reduce the natural acidity of the stomach, the bodies’ natural first line of defense against bacterial infections. Also, supplementation with appropriate forms of probiotics can help to prevent H. pylori from taking hold as they compete for nutrients and resources in the GI. It is also a good idea to supplement with probiotics after the use of antibiotics as they help to prevent H. pylori and other pathogenic bacteria from taking home in your gut.

3. Heal Once an ulcer has started, there are many ways in which to heal the erosion. Demulcent herbal formulas, ones that coat and soothe mucous membranes including esophageal, gastric and duodenal linings, are a great place to start. Glycyrrhica, black licorice root, Althea officinalis, marshmallow, Ulmus rubra, Slippery Elm are just a few botanicals known for their demulcent healing properties and their ability to heal wounds in the gastrointestinal tract. These herbs can be supplemented in the form of a tea, powders mixed in water, capsules or liquid herbal preparations. While most peptic ulcers are caught early and treated accordingly, early evaluation and treatment of peptic ulcer symptoms is essential in fully recovering from an ulcer and preventing future ulcers. Natural Ways To Reduce Stress & Anxiety Studies suggest that an imbalance of certain substances called neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain) may contribute to anxiety disorders. The neurotransmitters targeted in anxiety disorders are gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA), serotonin, dopamine, and epinephrine. Serotonin appears to be specifically important in feelings of well-being, and deficiencies are highly related to anxiety and depression. Stress hormones such as cortisol also play a role. ~ University of Maryland Medical Center, www.umm.edu (2009)

oes stress or anxiety interfere with your daily life, productivity, or happiness? If you prefer natural remedies over prescription drugs for stress or anxiety, consider the nutritional supplements listed at the end of this article.

Definitions & Symptoms Stress and anxiety frequently coexist, often with depression, eating disorders (like obesity), and substance abuse. It is estimated that unmanaged stress/anxiety may accompany or contribute to 90% of all illnesses, including diabetes, chronic fatigue, chronic headaches, hypertension, ulcers, heart disease, and candidiasis (yeast overgrowth). Stress is an automatic, negative, psychological, and physical response to overwhelming internal and external forces called stressors, including lack of sleep, allergens, pain/poor health, and work/social pressures. It releases neurochemicals and hormones to prepare the body for action (often called the fight-or-flight response) and, if excessive or prolonged, can wreak havoc on one’s life and health. Symptoms of stress include fatigue, sleep disorders, irritability, and constant worrying.

Internal or interpersonal conflict can provoke anxiety, which causes people to feel frightened and apprehensive for no apparent reason, or out of proportion relative to present stressors. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, genetics, biochemistry (including hormonal imbalances), environment, history, and psychological profile all can contribute to the development of anxiety disorders. Anxiety symptoms can include insomnia/restlessness, severe muscle tension/ spasms, excessive sweating, headaches, digestive problems, concentration difficulties, and impatience/irritability. The degree of anxiety can vary and, if extreme, might rise to the level of one of five anxiety disorders: panic disorder; obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); phobia; or general anxiety disorder (GAD).

Pharmacotherapy To alter the brain’s chemical messengers (neurotransmitters), conventional practitioners commonly prescribe drugs, all of which have numerous potential side effects, including: (1) benzodiazepines (Valium®, Xanax®, and Librium®): increased anxiety, significant memory impairment, and addiction (especially in alcoholics); (2) SSRIs (Prozac®, Lexapro®, and Zoloft®): agitation, decreased libido, delayed/lacking ability to orgasm, and insomnia; and (3) beta-blockers (Tenormin® and Inderal®): fatigue, depression, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, and insomnia.

Affordable Natural Remedies Various natural alternatives, either individually or in combination, can generally manage mild-to-moderate levels of stress/ anxiety safely and without side effects. The alphabetically arranged, affordable nutrients listed below represent those that clinical practice or research has shown to be especially effective. 34

Natural Nutmeg November 2013

1. Amino Acids When the brain produces a neurotransmitter, it usually starts with a dietary amino acid or another chemical already present in the brain. Enzymes then convert the amino acid into the needed brain chemical. Various cofactors help the enzymes work faster, including B vitamins (see below). Insufficient intakes of various aminos (tryptophan, phenylalanine, tyrosine) are associated with increased symptoms of anxiety. L-Theanine: Brain cells readily absorb L-theanine, derived from green tea. Without causing daytime drowsiness, it helps relax muscles, increases serotonin and dopamine, supports the production of alpha brain waves, and suppresses the release of adrenalin and stress hormones. Theanine also boosts brain function and general brain health. This amino acid is generally recommended in daily doses of 100-400 mg. L-Tyrosine: As a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine (adrenaline), L-tyrosine supplementation yields an alert, clear, uplifted but calm mind state. It also may reduce stress and anxiety by supporting the function of the adrenal and thyroid glands. In sensitive individuals, 200mg of tyrosine is a recommended low starting dose to prevent rapid heart rate or hypertension. 5-HTP/L-Tryptophan: Supplementation with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), or its precursor L-tryptophan, enhances both mood and one’s sense of well-being by elevating brain serotonin levels.

2. Vitamin B-Complex/Inositol B-Complex contains eight B vitamins, plus other related substances like choline and inositol (especially effective for stress/ anxiety/sleep at doses of 500mg or more), and is available in multivitamin-minerals, or separately in balanced 50mg or 100mg formulas. The eight vitamins are thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin/niacinamide (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), methyl- or cyanocobalamin (B12), folic acid, and biotin. Daily consumption of safe, water-soluble, B-Complex helps the body cope with stress/anxiety by supporting the adrenal glands and nervous system. In 2011, Australian researchers studied the impact of B-Complex on chronic work stress, finding that it significantly lowered strain, confusion and depression after three months.

3. Bioidentical Hormones Due to the characteristically wide fluctuations in hormone levels during PMS and peri/menopause, women are more than twice as likely as men to feel anxiety. According to Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, only the restoration of hormonal balance can provide relief from menopausal anxiety and panic attacks. (It also is important to address the factors that cause hormonal imbalances.) In a University of Texas clinical trial (2011), nearly 300 women aged 40 to 70 were treated with bioidentical estrogen and/or progesterone. After six months, they experienced dramatic improvements in mood, anxiety, and emotional stability. Researchers also found that supplementing with 80mg/day of red clover isoflavones (plant estrogens) for 90 days reduced anxiety in postmenopausal women. Natural progesterone cream is synthesized in a lab to have the identical molecular configuration of the progesterone that the body makes. According to renowned researcher John Lee, MD, progesterone supplementation aims to restore the amount the body would make under normal circumstances. Select a high-quality product (e.g., Products of Nature or Emerita, both mentioned in Dr. Lee’s books) that contains a total of 900 to 1,000mg of progesterone in two ounces, or approximately 20 mg in ¼ teaspoon.

4. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – “Nature’s Valium” Flush-free, non-addictive, niacinamide penetrates the brain easily. In 1979, Hoffman La Roche, the Swiss manufacturer of Valium, described niacinamide as, “…a brain constituent that has benzodiazepine-like actions.” The generally effective daily dose is two grams, three times per day.

5. Lifestyle Changes A healthy diet and daily aerobic exercise, yoga, Tai Chi, and/ or meditation, can greatly impact the body’s coping mechanisms by relaxing the body and mind, reducing heart rate, and improving mood. Aerobic exercise (30 to 45 minutes/day) is especially effective against stress/anxiety because it increases alpha- and beta-endorphins, which are natural tranquilizers. While various nutritional supplements can ease stress and anxiety, consider seeking the guidance of a natural practitioner. Inform your doctor before terminating treatment with any anxiolytic.
