Natural Support for Environmental Allergies HistaEze™ is designed to help support and counteract some of the main symptoms and immune reactions associated with environmental allergies. Featuring Tinofend®, a patented and clinically researched extract derived from the plant tinospora cordifolia, that has been used since the early 1900’s in Ayurvedic medicine for its immunomodulating action. Tinofend® contains a proprietary complex of polysaccharides and polyphenols. Human clinical research on Tinofend® has shown it to be helpful for maintaining healthy immune response by addressing issues related to allergen resistance.1

How does Tinofend work? Tinofend® addresses the cause of allergies by increasing the number of phagocytic white blood cells, including macrophages, which help consume and rid the body of allergens, and by reducing the number of eosinophils (cells that contain histamine).

Additional important ingredients include: • Quercetin, nettle leaf and vitamin C, which have been historically used throughout the years to help with the support and management of seasonal allergies. • Bicarbonate salts, which were added due to their role as immediate antihistamines, and their ability to mitigate the potential drowsiness experienced by those who may also be taking antihistamine medications.

all is here and as the leaves are quickly changing and falling off the trees, this is an exciting time and we are enjoying watching our brand new magazine in Fairfield County grow and prosper. We’ve already jumped in page count with more advertisers and contributing writers coming on board to join us on this journey! We hope you get a chance to check out the new magazine either online or in print at many Fairfield County locations. As the holidays approach and the stress increases, many of you may be concerned about staying healthy throughout the winter season. So this month our focus is on immune system support. Dr. Ayelet ConnellGiammatteo teaches us that a healthy lifestyle including exercise, a gluten free diet, and limiting our body’s exposure to synthetic chemicals is important in maintaining a strong immune system. This combined with Integrative Manual Therapy is a great tool to support the health of the liver and the immune system. In addition, Lori Carpenos writes an informative article about our psychological immune system and how our thoughts can keep us healthy or sick. And Alexander Todd provides us with an array of supplements to boost immunity from probiotics to omega-3 fish oil to minerals. In honor of Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month, Dr. Desmond Ebanks exposes some interesting information on how evidence is accumulating that protein-folding errors may have little, if anything, to do with the cause of AD. He states that researchers have also found that the inflammatory process may precede any visible symptoms of AD. And Bernie Siegel, MD tells us that if we can get going without pep pills, conquer tension without medical help, relax without liquor, sleep without the aid of drugs and more than we are almost as good as our dog. We have two great articles on posture this month written by Mary Holland and Cassandra Forsythe, PhD. They remind me of my grandmother who would have turned 104 as I write this today, and if she were still here she'd still have impeccable posture I'm sure. She was always telling me to "stand up straight", and of course she was right! Don’t miss our Holiday Marketplace with some great ideas for holiday gifts and please think of our advertisers first when shopping this holiday season as we are solely supported by them. Wishing you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving!

Are You Almost as Good as Your Dog?

T

here is a story about a boy who is willing to give his life, with his parents’ permission, to save another and bursts into joyful laughter when they are about to kill him. What did he tell his parents to get them to agree? Now most high school students feel their parents would agree without them asking for permission. That’s sad but true. The boy said, “Consider this; sooner or later my body will perish at any rate but if it perishes without love, which the wise declare is the only thing of permanence, of what use will it have been? What greater merit can my body reap than the love of this act?” And his parents agree. When his parents are holding his arms and legs and he is about to be slain what was his last prayer? “Let me be born again and again on the wheel of rebirth so again and again I may offer this body for the benefit of others.” It’s the age-old message that we are here to serve and not be served. Last but not least what did he know about life that would allow him to burst into joyful laughter at that moment? I feel he knows that we are here to perform acts of love and serve in a way that we choose. No one else should be deciding how you live and what you do with your life. It is not about the years you are alive but what you do with them. I know children who are immortal through their efforts to help find a cure for the disease they died of. Those who survived them continue their efforts and they live on through their acts. I think animals understand this better than people. I may add in another story a young man is asked, by the vet who is about to euthanize his dog, why he thinks animals have shorter lives than we do. The boy answers that they know about love, kindness and forgiveness and don’t need all the time we do to learn about them. Our pets teach us about the importance of connections and that is really the reason we are here and given bodies to perform acts of love and compassion. When you pet a dog your oxytocin and serotonin levels rise. These are the bonding hormones that rise after a woman gives birth. Some examples of the benefit of the presence of pets are increased longevity in nursing homes, decreased truancy in schools and decreased violence in prisons. One study showed that 30% of single women met the man they married while walking their dog and another study showed that if you went home to a house with a dog, after having a heart attack, the mortality rate after twelve months was close to 6% but if no dog was present it was closer to 30%. It isn’t just about pets it is about meaning in our work and lives. Most people do not like their jobs because they have to interact with people. Yet when you see the people as giving your life meaning and that you are here to serve them with love your life changes and everyone benefits. It’s no accident that women live longer than men and married men longer than single men with the same cancers. Married men also have a lower incidence of lung cancer than single men who smoke the same amount. So what is protecting the married men and women? One oncologist suggested that women must be protected by female hormones in some way. I then suggested that the married men were protected by sleeping with female hormones.

Just kidding. What protects them are their relationships. A recent study of loneliness shows it affects the genes, which control your immune response. Lonely people are more likely to have viral and inflammatory diseases and cancer. Our lives and our health are inter-related so when your life has meaning Monday morning becomes less of a threat to your health. When you ask adults what day of the week is bad for their health they all say, Monday. Right, there are more suicides, strokes, illnesses and heart attacks on Monday. When you ask kids what day of the week is bad for your health they yell out Saturday and Sunday. Why, because they think running around and getting tired makes them susceptible to disease. They are wrong. They are burning up and adults are burning out. We need a new life and all they need is a nap. Many of you have seen the list, which appeared many years ago in an Ann Landers column. Here are some elements of it; If you can get going without pep pills, conquer tension without medical help, relax without liquor, sleep without the aid of drugs, resist boring people with your troubles, eat the same food every day and be grateful for it, resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend, face the world without lies and deceit, take criticism without resentment and say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against any race, religion or politics then my friend you are almost as good as your dog. So what do I ask of all of you from here on? Just follow my advice and when in doubt as to how to act or behave ask...WWLD. Yes, What Would Lassie Do? Alternative Options For Immune System Support: Living a Healthy Life

T

he world is a very different place today. Global pandemic infectious disorders are becoming more and more common. It seems only in the last decade that we have been hearing about issues like the Swine Flu, West Nile Virus, Norovirus, SARS, Avian Bird Flu—in our own home! How is this possible? So many of us often feel like ostriches with our heads in the sand. But if we listen to scientists today, we would discover that this ‘closer to home’ phenomenon was inevitable. In Pulitzer Prize winner Laurie Garrett’s book, “The Coming Plague”, which was originally published in 1994, she writes as her tagline, “newly emerging diseases in a world out of balance.” Our body’s immune system is highly specialized. It consists of several intricate systems of vessels, glands, and tissues that are all interrelated. It appears as if we are in the midst of a transformation, or an evolutionary change, if you will. Our old immune systems are insufficient for today’s pathogens. With global warming upon us, there is a significant rise in infection. The mortality rate is going up. This is a great opportunity for our immune systems to accommodate to this new planet that we are living on. This word, “accommodate,” may seem out of place when associated with the immune system. Even the word, “opportunity,” may seem out of context. For those of us that are constantly searching for better answers, these words are quite fitting. How can our immune systems learn to accommodate or change for the better? How can we begin to build immunity to these new pathogens? Developing a strong immune system is influenced by multiple factors. One important factor is our diet. Another factor is the environment that we choose to live in—our home, our community. How toxic is our diet? How toxic is our environment? Reducing toxicity in our life is the most important factor in building a strong immune system.

10

November 2010

This is about exogenous (coming from outside) toxicity, but what about endogenous (from within) toxicity and illness? Consider two individuals that eat in a similar fashion and live in the same environment. Now consider that one of these individuals has illness such as irritable bowel syndrome, and a fatty liver syndrome, along with heart arrhythmias. This is a person with compromise of their digestive system, their liver and capacity for detoxification, and their heart and circulation. The person with illness will be much more susceptible to infection and further illness then the person who is healthy. Another example would be Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is common knowledge today that persons with autism have significant toxicity. But when did this toxicity begin? And when did the person’s immune deficiency begin? Consider two children that are born at the same time. These two children are equally vaccinated and have similar upbringing. One of these two children develops Autism and the other child does not. Why would one child be more susceptible to Autism then another? Is it genetics? Certainly genetics are always a factor. Dr. Jeffrey Bland, the father of Functional Medicine, a progressive and well researched form of nutritional wellness, states that genetic expression can be altered by diet, lifestyle, and environment. This does not mean that the actual gene changes, but rather, how it expresses itself changes. Another scientist, Dr. Bruce Lipton, has contributed to tremendous research in the field of cellular biology and a relatively new field of science called epigenetics. Dr. Lipton claims that gene expression is determined by an encasement of proteins over the gene. This protein encasement can be affected by diet, lifestyle, and environment. The way that the gene expresses itself determines whether the person manifests certain diseases and illness that they may be genetically prone to. In the case of Autism, there

www.naturalnutmeg.com

may be a genetic involvement; however, the health of the mother bearing the child and how the child is raised in reference to diet, lifestyle, and environment is arguably even more important. A possible explanation for the common case of these two children, one with Autism and one without, may be the status of their immune system. From my own clinical experience, children that are born with significant immune compromise are much more susceptible to disease processes. Frequently, they are carrying a toxic load in their liver and other body systems. These children are often ‘failure to thrive’ (underweight and malnourished). Today’s children may appear ‘normal’ but are they optimally healthy? 1 in 3 children today are prone to diabetes in their adult life. I recently visited Disney World with my family, and I was shocked at the degree of obesity that I observed during my trip.

What are the Answers? The answer to preventing and combating illness is to augment our immune system. What is the best approach? Consider Dr. Bland and Dr. Lipton—“diet, lifestyle, and environment.” What can we do to our body to augment health? Certainly exercise is an option. But what if the person is in pain and dealing with weakness and balance issues secondary to their illness? In this common case, the immune system needs to be affected in a different way. One solution is a combined approach of Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) and nutritional wellness.

Integrative Manual Therapy for the Immune System IMT treatment techniques are manual (hands-on), and generally involve gentle manipulative techniques to promote tissue repair, normalize structure and restore function. IMT follows an Integrated Systems Approach. We are comprised of many different body systems, such as the skeletal system, the

connective tissue system, the circulatory system, the immune system, and more. When we have a sign or symptom, it can involve one or many of these systems. IMT uses gentle handson techniques to correct dysfunction in many body systems. Often, it is easier to explain a comprehensive process by using a basic example. Let’s consider back pain. Back pain can be a result of joint compression in the sacrum or pelvis; it can be secondary to irritation of the colon, and even inflammation of the ureters (the tubes that travel from the kidneys to the bladder supporting elimination of toxins from the body). If someone was unaware that they had gluten sensitivity and continued to eat foods that contained gluten (protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and oat), this could cause irritation of the colon or ureters and lead to back pain. IMT uses a hands-on integrative diagnostic process to determine where the primary site of dysfunction is in the body. When considering immune deficiency, the ultimate goal is to augment immune competence. This means that the immune system is optimally equipped to manage today’s pathogens. The immune system includes the lymphatic system which is a system that filters all of the fluid in our body and supports the process of excretion of toxins from our body. When the lymphatic system is congested secondary to an overload of toxicity, this may present as obesity or localized swelling of a body part. Another important part of the immune system is our spleen and thymus gland. These organs support the production and dissemination of antibodies and T cells (infection fighting cells) to every part of our body. When the immune system is compromised, often the production and dissemination of these important immune cells is inhibited. This compromise contributes to inadequate immunity. For example, when we are low in antibodies, we are more susceptible to infection. IMT can be used to support the immune system by focusing treatment on the various parts of the immune system. A typical IMT treatment plan includes a protocol to augment the overall health of the immune system. This protocol includes techniques to augment circulation to and from the immune organs as well as augment flow of the lymphatic system. In addi-

tion, treatment is focused on decreasing overall toxicity in the body by addressing the liver. In this case, techniques would be implemented to augment circulation to and from the liver, as well as improve overall mobility of the liver by decreasing fascial tissue tension around the liver and promote normal mobility of the spine and rib cage in the region. The general goal of these treatments would be to augment overall immunity and support recovery from illness. If the illness was specific to a particular body system, for example, the cardiovascular system, treatment would also include a focus on augmenting function of the circulatory system. By decreasing toxicity in the body, the overall load on the heart would be less which would support recovery of cardiovascular dysfunction. Considering that heart disease is the leading cause of death in this country, it has been documented by many researchers that inflammation is at the foundation of this illness and disease process. Inflammation is correlated with immune dysfunction. By treating the immune system and augmenting immune

12

November 2010

competence, inflammation decreases and the health of our heart improves. In addition to using manual therapy to support the immune system, recovery with IMT can be accelerated by including a nutritional wellness program.

Nutritional Wellness for Immune Support Nutritional wellness can be categorized into two major categories: nutritional supplementation and dietary intervention. There are many nutritional supplements that can support the immune system and help to reduce toxicity in the body by promoting healthier detoxification by the liver. Using an IMT approach to nutritional wellness, no one person is the same. Going through a comprehensive examination is important to determine exactly what the person needs. This allows the practitioner to design a customized nutritional supplement program for the person to support optimal recovery. In addition to supplementation, dietary intervention is essential, specifically implementing elimination diets. Elimination diets may consist of many different food types. Typically, they include specific allergens. For example, a common elimination diet is a gluten elimination diet. Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, barley, rye and oat. Gluten is considered pro-inflammatory. This has been well researched in the field of Functional Medicine. A proinflammatory food means that when it is digested, it contributes to further inflammation in the body, specifically in the body’s weakest systems. Considering

www.naturalnutmeg.com

that inflammation is at the heart of most illness today, eliminating pro-inflammatory foods is ideal. There have been many researchers that have documented the negative effects of gluten on the immune system. More recently, the well known Dr. Oz has stated that everyone should ‘go off of gluten.’ Dr. Christiane Northrup, an internationally recognized OBGYN and acclaimed author on natural health for women, was interviewed by Oprah last year. During her interview, she stated that women should be eliminating gluten from their diet because of its pro-inflammatory effects. Women today deal with so many issues associated with fertility, menstruation, menopause, and more. The majority of these issues are secondary to inflammation of the women’s health organs, such as the uterus and ovaries. By decreasing inflammation via a gluten elimination diet, research has shown that there is an improvement in all of these women’s health issues, including fertility. In addition to a long term gluten elimination diet, short term elimination diets of other allergens can be beneficial to the immune system as well. Elimination diets are often short term and help to highlight specific allergies in the body as well as provide the body with an opportunity to ‘deload’, or desensitize to a particular food. Some foods are harmful to everyone, such as gluten. Other foods uniquely affect specific people. The best way to discover whether you are allergic to a particular food is to perform an elimination diet for four months. During these four months, it is important to eliminate the food completely. To perform a dairy elimination diet, you would eliminate all forms of dairy,

such as butter, milk, and cheese. During these four months, you may expect to find a reduction in general body aches, reduced headaches and back pain, reduced abdominal cramping and bloating, improved energy, improved mental clarity, and more. Remember that the signs and symptoms associated with allergies are not always obvious! Especially when considering gluten, it could contribute to inflammation of any body system. For example, gluten has been correlated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, ALS, and Alzheimer’s. When elimination diets are combined with IMT and nutritional supplementation, remarkable recovery from illness can be attained.

How to Get Started Often, the biggest challenge is just getting started. Many of us ‘think’ that we lead healthy lives. What else can we do? On the other hand, many of us know that we could do a lot more for our health but the prospect of this seems overwhelming. For a child, the most important factor is family support. Ideally, to support the child optimally, the whole family should adopt these changes. All gluten should be eliminated from the household. Each family member should be informed of the potential benefits of this major change in their diet. As a lifestyle, reducing exposure to toxins is ideal.

Consider our liver as a ‘cup.’ Our liver is our primary organ for breaking down toxins in our body. There is a finite amount of space within the cup for our liver to store toxins that are difficult to break down and excrete. Examples of these types of toxins would be pesticides and synthetic additives in our foods such as food coloring and preservatives. Eventually, the cup gets filled. At this point, the liver becomes congested and is compromised in its ability to perform detoxification. As the cup gets filled and overflows, many symptoms can arise, such as headaches, weight gain and abdominal bloating, dark circles under the eyes, eczema and dry skin, rashes and allergic reactions to food and other elements. In children and adults, this toxic load of the liver can lead to many negative behaviors. The process of emptying the cup can be supported by leading a

www.naturalnutmeg.com

healthy lifestyle of exercise, a gluten free diet, and limiting our body’s exposure to synthetic chemicals. Integrative Manual Therapy is a great tool to support health of the liver and the immune system. Combined with a healthy diet, IMT can lead to optimal health. Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT,C is the Director of Pediatrics for CenterIMT, Center of Integrative Manual Therapy and Diagnostics, headquartered in Bloomfield, CT. She is also the Dean of the Connecticut School of Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT). Ayelet has taught courses in IMT nationally and internationally for over 15 years. Alzheimer’s Disease... Have We Been Barking Up the Wrong Tree?

A

lzheimer’s Disease (AD) is often called the most common form of dementia. All dementias are characterized by a progressive loss of mental functions. Since 1906, AD has been considered to be a distinct form of dementia distinguishable from all other dementia by certain structures found in the brains of sufferers. Although this has been the conventional wisdom among neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, gerontologists, and other medical professionals, a new breed of scientists are challenging that notion. The conventional theories about AD may be trying to treat the wrong issue. Until recently, AD was diagnosed through what’s called the clinical picture. Because there were no blood tests, no x-ray or CT scans, no biopsy results that would definitively detect AD, a diagnosis depended on a doctor’s judgment. This meant that the diagnosis could only be made after the disease process had progressed far enough to produce notable symptoms. It also meant that diagnosing AD was a hit-or-miss problem heavily dependent on individual judgment calls. In fact, traditionally the only way to definitively diagnose AD was by examining the brain after death. The changes in the brain in certain people with dementia have been investigated for a long time. Around the time of the Civil War, scientists began noticing that the brains of people with dementia were atrophied (i.e., shrunken). Alois Alzheimer was the first scientist to identify distinctive alterations of the brain of a person with what he called atypical dementia. He found tangles of threadlike structures called neurofibrils in nerve cells. These neurofibrils appeared in otherwise normalseeming neurons. First a few disconnected threads appeared, then more appeared and tangled into dense bundles. Finally, the interior of the cell was entirely taken up by knots of fibrils and the cell was destroyed. Alzheimer also found wide14

spread small deposits of a protein called amyloid beta in the brain. These two features, neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques, were considered to be the factors that defined AD as a distinct disease separate from other dementias. Although AD was first described over a century ago, for most of that time there was little understanding of what caused the disease. The protein structures Alzheimer discovered defined the disease so protein functioning has been the obvious target for research. The theory that has dominated AD research for the last few decades is called the “amyloid beta hypothesis.” According to this theory, proteins that help make the cell membranes of neurons are cut into shorter segments. Some unknown process then causes these segments to fold incorrectly, and these wrongly-folded proteins are unable to be eliminated by the body. These build up into the neurofibrillary tangles and plaques, causing the visible symptoms of AD. Evidence is accumulating that protein-folding errors may have little, if anything, to do with the cause of AD. The latest reflection of this is news of the cancellation of large-scale trials of what was supposed to be a promising new drug called semagacestat. In test after test, semagacestat did exactly what it was supposed to do – stop the formation of the amyloid beta proteins. According to the widely-accepted theory, less of the “bad” protein would reduce the progression of the disease. When it was tested on people who had AD, though, the drug made their condition worse. As the team leader for the company behind the drug said: “The fact that people got worse means there is biology we don’t understand.” Another method of approaching AD has been through a class of drugs called acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, such as Aricept and Exelon. These drugs do not try to affect the formation of amyloid plaques or fibrils, instead they try to increase the effectiveness of a certain neurotransmitter. The theory is

www.naturalnutmeg.com

that, by supporting the transmission of signals from damaged or degraded neurons, the symptoms of AD will be reduced. Two large-scale reviews of the evidence for this idea, however, found that there’s very little good-quality evidence that these drugs modify the course of AD. The biological cause of AD, despite years of searching, remains elusive. One thing we do know is that people with a particular genetic mutation to the apolipoprotein E (ApoE) gene are more likely to develop AD. We know that although dietary and lifestyle factors have been proposed to reduce the risk of AD, the evidence for these claims is tepid. Taking measures such as maintaining mental engagement, having an adequate folic acid intake, a diet low in trans-saturated fat and high in fruits and vegetables, while certainly healthy in general, either have small or unreliable effects on AD risk. There is some evidence that physical activity programs can reduce memory problems in older adults, but it is still unknown if this applies to reducing the underlying mechanisms of AD. Many of the factors proposed to increase AD risk have similarly-shaky connections, such as smoking, never being married, exposure to environmental contaminants, etc. Stronger links have been found between chronic diseases like high blood pressure, chronic depression and metabolic syndrome and late-life decline in mental abilities. The passing of a spouse is also strongly linked to mental decline. Despite these links, there is still debate as to whether these links extend to AD or not. The reason for distinguishing between mental decline and AD is that the one is a symptom while the other is a disease. It is the same as distinguishing between reducing a fever and curing a case of the flu. Although this may make it sound as if scientists know little more about AD today than they did in 1906, there are new developments. If AD is not a disease of the metabolism or neurotransmitters, then there is some other factor or factors at work. This factor may be inflammation. Inflammation is the immune system’s response to injury or infection. If this theory is correct it means that the conventional research has been targeting the wrong type of cell. The white blood cells that form the

immune system in the rest of the body are not normally present in the brain. The brain has its own cells responsible for the immune response called microglia. Normally, microglia are dormant and waiting for a signal. Even in this state, however, they are very sensitive to any changes in the brain’s internal environment. When an injury or infection occurs, chemical changes in the brain activate the microglia. When activated, these cells will engulf foreign bodies, digest them, and then attract T-cells from the circulation to assist in the destruction of the invader. Recently, it has been found that microglial cells are activated in the brains of people with AD, especially in areas that have atrophied. Whatever is causing the inflammatory response in these areas is therefore leading to the deaths of neurons. Another indicator of the inflammatory process has been the finding of many of the chemical signals that start and control the inflammatory process in the brains of people with AD. By one estimate, at least 40 proteins associated with immune reactions are present in AD patients. Researchers have also found that the inflammatory process may precede any visible symptoms of AD. There are a variety of natural substances that have been shown to have significant antioxidant and anti-inflam-

www.naturalnutmeg.com

matory properties. The NrF2 genetic pathway regulates the production of important antioxidants and detoxification enzymes while controlling inflammatory factors in the human brain and nervous system. Substances known to favorably activate the NrF2 pathway include resveratrol, curcumin, green tea and sulforaphane (derived from cruciferous vegetables). The emergence of new uses for natural phytochemicals opens up exciting possibilities for preventing and treating AD. For years, Alzheimer’s researchers have hoped to find some substance that would modify the actual disease process and not just treat the symptoms. It is beginning to appear that the answer may have already been under our noses. Our Psychological Immune System

A

nutritionist I worked with some years ago, had this to say about the immune system: “It is a highly specialized front-line defense that identifies, and destroys disease-causing invaders.” Her description was quite compelling; it sounded like the latest high tech missile, capable of not only identifying, but also destroying the enemy. I couldn’t help but see the mindbody connection. I had learned that our mind is also capable of identifying the enemy; or to put it another way: we can know our own thoughts and we are quite capable of thinking thoughts that can hurt us. In other words, we can be our own worst enemies; the choice is ours because we are equipped with free will. We can use our free will to accept our negative thoughts about ourselves and the world around us or we can choose to reconsider our long held beliefs. Since we are capable of thinking about our thoughts, you might say that nature provides our psyches with an immune system as well, capable of identifying and destroying hurtful thinking. But just as many of us ignore the warning signs from our physical immune system, such as weight gain when we eat too much, or sluggishness when we don’t sleep enough, we often ignore

16

November 2010

the psychological signs that try to tell us we’re putting our attention on thoughts that can hurt us. We are built with an arsenal of psychological defenses that can aid us. If we learn to spot the psychological warning signs and use our awareness, we can turn away from hurtful thinking. A bad feeling like anger or blame will alert us to the fact that our thinking is off track. Contrary to what we might believe, the bad feeling is not telling us to delve more deeply into what we’re thinking, any more than stomach pain during a meal is telling us to go ahead and eat more. It is best to slow down and quiet the mind. Just as a stomachache tells us to stop eating, a bad feeling tells us to stop ruminating, stop overthinking, and stop analyzing. Most of us know it is not a good idea to pick a scab (even though it may feel good in the moment). At some point we learn that the scab allows the wound to heal, so it's best to just let it do its job. A scab is a natural band-aid that is quickly provided and free of charge, compliments of Mother Nature; we don’t even have to lift a finger because it is automatically applied. The natural formation of a scab to protect and heal physical

www.naturalnutmeg.com

wounds is a wonderful metaphor for the innate health of the mind; and if you know of its existence, you can maximize its benefits. Our innate health is like an immune system for the mind, though few know about it. Knowing something about it will keep you from picking your emotional scabs, so to speak, and shorten the distress time, while encouraging the healing process. We’re so lucky that we are quite capable of dropping non-productive thoughts. Have you ever left an umbrella or scarf at a restaurant because you didn’t have it on your mind to hang on to it. That’s how easy it is to forget something. If you’re not holding on to something, it’s easy to forget. In fact, it’s only the things that interest us that will stick with us. My advice is to lose interest in things that are hurtful and not helpful to hang onto. When I wanted to do well on a test in school but I was not interested in the material I would have to go over and over it until it stuck. It wasn’t fun but that was the only way to remember something in which I lacked interest. I say, question the things in life that interest you. Anything you ruminate about – question its importance. If you are honest with yourself it probably will do little good to go over and over it in your mind. First of all, the only thing you’ll come up with is something you have thought about already. The mind acts a lot like a computer, it will only respond with what was programmed into it. If you want a fresh new thought, you have to let it go, take it off your mind and then something has a chance of hitting you from out of the blue. Have you had the experience of running into a familiar person but you can’t recall the name no matter how hard you try? Have you then given up and some time later, all of a sudden the name pops into your mind? That is an example of a deeper wisdom (innate health) coming through when the mind is clear of forced thinking. In his book, “Maximum Healing: Improve Your Immune System,” H. Rob-

ert Silverstein states that your behavior and how you live your life, interacts with your genetics and affects your susceptibility to illness. Your behaviors can help boost the body’s own healing powers – namely the immune system. Do you know what is the precursor to our behaviors? It is our THOUGHTS. Try raising your arm without the thought of raise arm. Try hugging someone when you’re really angry with them. Try staying in bed when you’re thinking how much you can’t wait to get in the car to begin your vacation. Try staying at work when three of your friends just called one after the other to say they are waiting for you at happy hour. What we think will always translate to a behavior and an outcome. If we think we can get away with one more piece of cake and convince ourselves that it’s just in celebration of our grandmothers' birthday, then don’t be surprised when the scale registers a weight gain in the morning. What we think is what we get. There is a one-to-one relationship. Lucky for us, we are naturally built to change our minds. If you want a good outcome, you have the free will to change your mind or to drop your unhealthy thoughts. It’s the best way I know to watch over your innate health; a precious jewel. You will automatically boost your psychological immune system when you take care of your innate health and wisdom. Get out of its way and let it do what it does naturally – bring you fresh thoughts of health, love, and gratitude. Submitted by Lori Carpenos. Change Your Posture ~ Change Your Life

M

om always warned us to stand up straight! With healthcare costs exploding, more and more people are getting back to basics, and it’s hard to get more basic than practicing healthy posture. From top to bottom, the effects probably reach farther than most have ever considered. Any good chiropractor will tell you that spinal alignment is key to maintaining a healthy core, and the implications are fairly undeniable. In terms of muscle function, organ performance and overall circulation, there is little question that posture is impacting our lives. Pain free, aligned and well rested, we’re far better communicators, problem solvers, employees, parents and friends, and in truth, we’re just plain happier. Now that prevention is the new word in healthcare, individual responsibility is playing an ever-increasing role in our lifestyle choices. From exercise and alternative treatments to eliminating such formerly innocuous substances as sugar and caffeine, our society is evolving out of pure necessity. While it stands to reason that this increased awareness also increases our responsibility, it’s through such growth that we, as a nation, will find true empowerment. Empowered is a state of being that reflects in all directions. Like posture, it

18

November 2010

www.naturalnutmeg.com

begins at the core and resonates throughout the body, mind and spirit. In fact, the connection between posture and empowerment becomes crystal clear as we envision our warriors standing tall in formation, or just about any leader we can imagine exuding pure confidence through a strong, healthy stature. How we choose to see ourselves stands in direct correlation with our attitudes and our potential. Are we fearful and recoiling from the world, or are we standing boldly at the threshold of new possibilities? Practicing healthy posture helps inspire personal confidence, and the mere act of straightening the spine aligns our thoughts and our energies with our physical bodies. Every good sports team knows the secret. It’s like hiring a personal coach to live inside your head, and that’s only the beginning… Who do you notice when you walk into a room? Powerful personalities quickly draw our attention as we visually identify the leaders, the threats and the less consequential, based primarily on posture. Think about it: threats tend to demonstrate aggressive posture, and capitalize on either a higher or lower center of gravity (over the top or shifty) to keep the populace off balance. Leaders, on the other hand, typically maintain a grounded, square-shouldered pos-

ture that elicits confidence, comfort and the appearance of control. Those deemed less consequential usually demonstrate a more diminutive posture that can be interpreted any number of ways. Some will see it as submissive or needy, and will act accordingly. Others may view it as weak – prey to be stalked and taken down for some particular gain. Neither of these interpretations is necessarily true or accurate, yet they are the monkey brain’s instinctual assessments. Therefore, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity or intelligence, we are all being stereotyped before we even open our mouths. Consider the boundaries that could be eradicated by simply paying attention to your posture. Imagine the shifts that could occur in your life through this one small change. Altering your posture can improve your health, raise your confidence, increase your potential and may even afford you initial respect from your peer group. And beyond that, it’s thoroughly attractive! Whatever your height, size or stature, everyone looks better wearing a straight up perspective. Clothes hang better, muscle tone is more pronounced, and we even walk differently when we practice healthy posture. Each day, we stand on the precipice of change, and as individuals, we owe it to ourselves to reach for our maximum potential. Suppose for a moment, that each of us begins performing at our optimum – healthy, confident, and empowered. Now presume that we also teach our children to operate from their highest potential. The stronger we are personally, the healthier we are as a community, and strong, healthy communities will find solutions for our world. So once again, the Wisdom of Mom prevails! Who knew the profundity of those few simple words – Stand Up Straight! It’s a gift and a blessing that is available to everyone, and according to the Mayo Clinic, when it comes to improving our posture; we’re never too old to start! An Innovative Approach to Neck and Low Back Pain

N

eck and low back pain are two of the most common ailments people seek relief from today. If you are reading this article, you’ve probably experienced neck and/or low back pain on more than one occasion. Understanding the most common origins and what can be done is the key to prevention and effective treatment with permanent results.

Treatment with NeuroKinetic Therapy NeuroKinetic Therapy is a sophisticated bodywork modality that is used both as an assessment technique and a rehabilitative technique to treat low back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel, and other injuries. The NeuroKinetic Therapy protocol employs a system of precise muscle tests that has the ability to change the programming of the Motor Control Center (MCC) in the cerebellum. The MCC coordinates all movement patterns in the body. It learns through failure. A good example is a baby learning to stand. Through many attempts and failures the baby finally achieves success. But how? The MCC chooses the

20

November 2010

most successful attempts until standing happens without "thinking" about it. With each failure the MCC is “lit up” for new learning. The MCC organizes all body movement and patterns. It can also learn new successful routines (e.g. gymnastics), or in response to trauma it can create dysfunctional patterns. Conversely, after an injury, the MCC adapts to a

www.naturalnutmeg.com

compensation pattern and holds that in its memory forever unless it is convinced to change. A whiplash accident is an excellent example in which the posterior neck muscles brace for the anterior neck muscles. The posterior neck muscles can become extremely tight and painful. Massage, stretching, and general strengthening exercises may have little or no effect. Until the pattern is cleared using the NeuroKinetic Therapy protocol (or a similar therapy), the problem can endure forever and the neck extensors will remain locked. Why? The MCC has now stored in its memory the fact that the neck flexors are weak and vulnerable. How is it going to keep the head upright? It chooses to keep the neck extensors tight to support the weight of the head. Until the pattern is cleared using the NeuroKinetic Therapy protocol (or something similar), the neck extensors will remain locked. When NKT is applied, the weak anterior neck muscles are tested. They fail thus opening the MCC to new learning. After the balance is restored, the MCC is "reprogrammed" and recognizes the anterior neck muscles. To complete the

reprogramming, specific rehab exercises are assigned to "burn in" the new functional pattern.

Low Back Pain Low back pain commonly originates from poor posture, bad ergonomics, obesity, lifting objects that are too heavy, and constipation. Muscle tightness in the low back usually is a result of compensation for weak abdominal muscles. Many people make the mistake of simply trying to strengthen their abdominal muscles. They usually do not experience any relief of low back pain and many times exacerbate the symptoms. Why? Because the MCC is storing in its memory that the abdominal muscles are weak and it is choosing to keep the muscles in the low back tight. How can the body utilize muscles that have been made unavailable? It can’t. The MCC recruits the low back muscles to work instead. Sometimes low back pain can be caused by hip misalignment where the hips are a different height, or they become twisted; both due to muscle imbalances. Several muscles can be involved in hip torsions including the iliacus, quadratus lumborum and psoas. However, the psoas muscle usually plays an important role. With hip torsions, the psoas can either be strong and too tight, pulling excessively on the front of the lumbar spine, or weak. For effective, long lasting treatment, it is crucial to discover each muscle’s role in the dysfunctional hip. NeuroKinetic Therapy can pinpoint each muscle and its role in the dysfunctional pattern. Then the body can be rehabilitated accordingly. Many people receive skeletal adjustments for this issue. While they can be helpful, they do not always address the underlying cause of the problem, since the misalignment of the hips is many times due to dysfunctional muscle compensating patterns. This is why most hip adjustments are temporary. When pain spreads across the top of the buttocks and one feels like their back could break, this indicates a strain of the sacroiliac joint. A strain affects the muscles that influence this joint, where some can be weakened, and some can be bracing. The sacroiliac joint is usually either too loose or unstable, or

jammed and too tight. Using NeuroKinetic Therapy, the affected muscles can be identified, their condition assessed and then an effective treatment applied. Sometimes support belts are necessary in the beginning of treatment. These can be easily purchased locally. Sciatica is a condition in which nerve pain is in the buttock or travels down the back or side of the leg. It can be caused by over tight deep gluteal muscles or a nerve impingement in the lumbar spine. Sciatica due to over tight deep gluteal muscles can also be identified specifically using NeuroKinetic Therapy and resolved with an appropriate therapy protocol. If the nerve pain is caused by a lumbar impingement, NeuroKinetic Therapy can be helpful. If the nerve pain persists, consult your doctor and ask about an MRI.

Neck Pain Neck pain stems from poor posture, whiplash, bad ergonomics and falls and blows to the head. It can result in reduced and painful range of motion, inability to lift your head off the pillow, shooting pains in your shoulder, neck and head, and numbness and tingling in the arm and hand. Earlier in the article, you will recall the example of a typical whiplash injury. Desk workers can also experience the same problems that also occur in a whiplash injury. People who sit at their desks looking down for too

www.naturalnutmeg.com

long will cause the muscles in the back of the neck to spasm. At the same time, the muscles in the front of the neck will weaken. Until those “front” neck muscles become functional again, the “back” neck muscles will remain tight and painful. The NeuroKinetic Therapy protocol works brilliantly for this by identifying the weak and tight muscles. The MCC is then reprogrammed so a healthy neck can be restored. Specific rehab exercises are then given to “burn in” the new functional pattern. If nerve pain persists in the neck, consult your doctor and ask about an MRI. A neck traction device could be useful in this situation. Injuries, work habits, stress and poor lifestyle choices are the reasons why most people experience neck and low back pain. Many people resign to live this pain because of the limitations conventional medicine has to offer. Nobody has to live in constant pain. Fortunately, there are effective ways to address and alleviate the pain with a technique like NeuroKinetic Therapy, strengthening the integrity of your body, your health, wellbeing and quality of life. Movement as Medicine

Cassandra Forsythe, PhD, Brian St. Pierre, CSCS

The Hips Don’t Lie

I

t was once said that “the hips don’t lie.” The fact of the matter is that statement is truer today than ever before. These days people spend more time sitting than they ideally should be. We sit at our computers in the morning to check our email, we sit on the way to work, we sit all day while at work, we sit on the way home from work, and we sit on the couch and watch TV when we get home… you get the idea. This vicious cycle of continued sitting takes its toll on our health, especially our lower back and hips.

Defining the Hips The hip joint is where the pelvis meets the femur (the thigh bone), with the pelvis providing the socket portion of the hip, and the end of the femur being the ball portion of this ball-and-socket joint. Since the hip is a ball-and-socket joint, it has a tremendous capacity for mobility, but we also have ligaments in place to control the degree of mobility and ensure they stay stable and strong. In addition to these ligaments, the hip has a large amount of muscle that at-

22

November 2010

tach to it to control its motion and contribute to its stability and proper function. The hip flexors and glutes are two of the most powerful of these muscles for this task. The hip flexor muscles include muscles that act to bring your knee upward to your body as you bend at the hip, where the glute muscles act to extend and rotate your hip. These muscles ensure that the hips stay in proper alignment with your body, but when they fail to function normally, pain ensues.

Where Things Go Wrong Due to all of the sitting we do today, and the drastically less time we spend being active, the ligaments around the ball and socket of the hip lose some of their elasticity. Not only that, but the muscles around the hips become lax from disuse. The hip flexors shorten and tighten, and we develop a condition known as “gluteal amnesia” - where the glutes no longer function properly. When these changes happen, your body has a hard time performing simple day-to-day

www.naturalnutmeg.com

movements like sitting up from a chair, or climbing stairs. In turn, the body must look elsewhere for movement because the hips can’t work the way they’re supposed to. Unfortunately that elsewhere usually ends up being the lower back, and this is definitely not an area where we want excessive range of motion. While the hips are desired for mobility, the lower back is a segment of your spine that is designed for stability. It’s because your hip muscles are tight and your glute muscles are weak that your lower back is forced to move and function in ways it was never designed to in the first place. While the upper back (known as the thoracic spine) has a normal range of motion in excess of 70 degrees, as do the hips, the lower back (known as the lumbar spine) only has about 13 degrees of total motion. Clearly it is obvious that we want motion to come from the hips and thoracic spine, as they were designed to move, and not from the lumbar spine, which was designed to be stable. While excessive sitting will most definitely stiffen your hips, loosen your ligaments, weaken your hip muscles,

decrease your range of motion and force movement in your lower back, it will also affect your thoracic spine (the upper back). Think about this: when sitting reading your email, is your back straight, shoulder blades down and back, and neck in a neutral position? It’s highly doubtful. More than likely you’re slightly slouched, with your shoulders rotated in towards the midline of your body and your chin jutting out towards your screen. Sort of like a caveman posture. Not a pretty picture of health.

Your Lower Back Pain is Due to Hip & Spine Dysfunction Slouching over at your desk chair that you sit at all day, or over-arching your lower back more than normal may seem insignificant to you now, but over time it does become a big issue. This new situation your body is put in is called the SAID principle. This means the “Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demand” principle. Translation: the body adapts to what is imposed on it most often, and when poor posture and excessive sitting are imposed on it for over 10-12 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year, well that obligatory demand certainly adds up! As odd as it may sound, all of this is contributing to your lower back pain just as much as having a weak core. While last month we encouraged you to start training your core correctly, by avoid flexion exercise like sit-ups and crunches, and instead focusing on moves that strengthen your core in an anatomically correct manner, this time we are showing you that there is more to the equation. Keeping your hips and thoracic spine strong and correctly mobile is just as important as training your core to be stable when it comes to improving lower back health or managing pain.

body slouching over and your abs contracting about as hard as jelly on bread, fix it. Sit up straight, engage your core and tighten your glutes. You don’t need to sit on an exercise ball to make this happen either, and, for some people, that might make their hips and back even more dysfunctional. Just make sure you’re sitting with good posture, shoulders down and back, chest up, abs tight and straight back – like your momma told you. Second, when sitting all day, take frequent breaks to stand up and walk around. This gives your hips a chance to stretch out and return to their normal lengthened position, while also turns your butt muscles and abs back on (you need them both to stand upright). Third, if you work at a desk all day long, look into getting a Stand-Up Desk, or a Drafters Desk. Some manufacturers have even created computer stations that are mounted to a treadmill to give your body even more challenge while working. Some research has shown that standing while working, or even better, walking while working increases work productivity. Fourth, perform daily exercises that strengthen your glutes, and ligaments of your hips. Exercises such as front body bridge, side bridge, bird dog, modified curl-up and any exercise where your abs are engaged and your body is in a relatively straight line – just like you would stand. The last thing you want to do to strengthen your core, hips and glutes is to perform exercises that mimic sitting in a slouched position like a crunch or full curl-up, so avoid these.

Finally, ensure you perform hip and thoracic spine mobility drills and proper stretches that work to lengthen tightened hip flexors - like a front lunge stretch and give mobility to your upper back – like upper back foam rolling.

Summary Your hips are one of the cornerstones of your body’s health – when their ligaments become loose from disuse, when their muscles around them become lax, and when they become tight in the wrong areas your whole body can suffer. Remember that your lower back pain isn’t from lack of lower back exercises; it’s from a lack of good posture, lack of everyday movement and loss of strength and mobility in your hips, butt and upper back. Look to your whole body for answers to nagging specific pain. Are You a Member of Overthinkers Anonymous?

W

hile I don’t believe there’s an actual group out there for overthinkers, I definitely think (no pun intended) there should be. You know who you are – always running a million different scenarios through your head about any given situation that you’re currently involved in. Thinking about the past, thinking about the future, but rarely spending any time thinking about the present! We think about everything – our jobs, our kids, our health, our families, our relationships – you name it. And almost always when we’re in our overthinking mode, the thoughts we’re having are not positive ones. Here’s a typical train of thought for most of us…”I wonder if he/she’s thinking about me (in reference to a spouse, significant other or potential new love interest), why hasn’t he/she called yet, I need to pick up the dry cleaning, what am I going

24

November 2010

to make for dinner, I should go to the gym, I can’t forget to get gas, I better finish that report for work, what will my boss think, …” Are you exhausted yet? Thinking, thinking, thinking and where does it get us? Usually nowhere but worked up into a frenzy! After years of listening to myself and many of my friends, acquaintances and colleagues talk about their thoughts, I became fascinated by what we think about and how often we think about it. And even more so by the power that our thoughts have over us in both positive and negative aspects of our lives. My friend has recently started dating this guy that she’s pretty excited about. She’s recently out of a long relationship and trying to get back into the dating scene, but seems to be having a little trouble remembering how it works. So, they’ve

www.naturalnutmeg.com

been out fairly regularly over the last two months and we’ve analyzed the situation about a hundred times to try and figure out…you guessed it, what he’s thinking about! One week he’ll call her early in the week and ask her out for the weekend and then the next week she won’t hear from him at all. Now we all know there could be a million reasons for the sporadic behavior – none of which I’ll get into in this article, but what is fascinating is to watch her go from being happy and upbeat to being anxious and insecure in the course of a few days based on whether or not he’s called or they’ve gone out. The main cause of her flip-flopping emotions…the power of thought. And well… maybe some insecurity issues she needs to work on to determine why she’s allowing this situation to have such power over her, but let’s focus on the thoughts for now. We all do this. We have a situation in our life that is causing us stress, whether it be a new relationship, an old relationship, our job, our health, our family, finances – you name it. We start to think. Sometimes the thoughts are positive and we go about our day in a great mood, but more often than not, the thoughts are negative and we start down the path to worry, anxiety and grief. Take my friend – so the guy doesn’t call for a few days or even a week. The first thing she says to me, however usually it’s a series of questions that I can’t get a word in edgewise to answer, is “why isn’t he calling, do you think he’s seeing someone else, maybe he doesn’t like me, did I say something wrong, do you think he’s just busy with work, what if he never calls me again…” You see where I’m headed with this – or actually where my friend is headed. Right into the darkest depths. It really doesn’t matter what the answers are to any of her questions – we’ll never know… you’d have to ask him. And that certainly isn’t going to happen. This guy could wind up being “the one” or he could be just another guy she dated for a few months, but the bottom line is why put yourself through all this stress trying to figure out what he’s doing or thinking? Why not focus on yourself and figure out what you want? You see, in order to do that, you need to manage your thoughts and that’s where the hard work comes in. As I am constantly telling my friend, you need to make time during the day for meditation and quieting the mind. It works every time – even when I resist it and God knows why I do. It’s probably an ego-based reaction because the ego hates to be quiet. Every time those negative, anxious, worrisome thoughts come into your head, you need to quiet them. If you don’t have time to sit in your meditation chair, then you need to find a flip switch – something you can think about that will make

you happy and joyful – and you need to employ that switch the minute you start to head down the path of negative thinking. This is the only way you’ll ever get out. It seems so easy and yet sometimes it’s so hard to do. A perfect example of how our thoughts affect our lives was illustrated in the book, “Eat, Pray, Love”. There is a scene with the main character, Liz and she is talking to Richard from Texas, a man she meets in the Ashram in India. He says to her, “…if you clear out all that space in your mind that you’re using right now to obsess about this guy, you’ll have such a vacuum in there, the Universe will rush in and fill you with more love than you ever dreamed possible. You’ll have the capacity to love the whole world.” It made me stop and think…wow, what are we missing out on because we’re consumed with all this thinking. Is it possible that with our continuous thinking and obsessing over our relationships, our bodies, our financial state, our jobs, you name it…that we are actually blocking the door to peace and happiness and everything we desire? We spend so much time thinking about what to do about this situation or that situation, that we don’t give our soul the time or space to tell us what we really need to hear to handle the issue. We’re so convinced that the way to solve our problems is to think it through with the rational mind. Or talk about it and analyze it with 10 of our closest friends. But where does that get us? Usually not far. So why do we do all this obsessing and thinking and analyzing? Richard goes on to say, “Listen groceries, you’re a powerful woman and you’re used to getting what you want out of life, and you didn’t get what you wanted in your last few relationships and it’s got you all jammed up. Your husband didn’t behave the way you wanted him to and David didn’t either. Life didn’t go your way for once. And nothing pisses off a control freak more than life not goin’ her way.” Isn’t that the truth. And I know all you control freaks out there are laughing right now, because you know how right he is. That’s why we obsess, why we get anxious, worried, sad, depressed…it’s because people aren’t acting or behaving the way we expect or want them to and we can’t stop thinking 26

about it. It’s not that the people in our lives are doing this on purpose to try and hurt us, it’s just that we have an expectation and when someone doesn’t live up to that expectation, we allow ourselves to feel hurt and pain from obsessing and thinking and analyzing the situation a million times. But that’s our choice. We can’t control other people and so sometimes, probably the majority of times, they’re not going to act the way we expect them to. The key is to let it go. Or maybe to just hold on lightly to any expectations we may have. We all will have expectations, it’s human nature, but the difference between someone who is generally happy in their life vs. someone who is typically miserable, is usually because the happy person doesn’t get too attached to their expectations. They don’t spend hours thinking and analyzing about why this or that did or didn’t happen or why he or she didn’t act the way they were expected to. They hold on lightly. Sounds wonderful, you’re saying, but how do you do this? It comes from learning that happiness comes from within. What Richard from Texas says is so true, if only we can learn to apply it. Every time I have been obsessing over some guy or some problem in my life, and I’ve been angry or sad or stressed out, when I’ve taken the time to stop…to sit in silence and clear my mind…suddenly I am at peace with whatever the situation is. Suddenly I can see clearly why I’m obsessing and why it’s such a waste of time. And suddenly I

realize that I am responsible for my happiness and I have the power to choose whether I will be happy or unhappy. And when I give that power away by getting upset because someone didn’t live up to my expectations, I realize that there is nothing I can do or should do to change the other person, I’m the one who needs to change. And when you fully realize that this power is yours, you will clear the space and the Universe will rush in and fill you with love. As I study this more and more, I’ve realized that there are certain people who have amazing, joyful, and successful lives and others who seem to be constantly enmeshed in drama, pain and anxiety. The difference between these two groups of people is that the former are able to use their thoughts to help them create what they want in their lives and eliminate or pay less attention to the thoughts that cause them grief or anxiety. While the latter tend to focus only on the thoughts that keep them in the midst of the drama. The only question for you is…which group do you want to be in? Don’t overthink it! GERD, Reflux, and Heartburn The Acid Paradox "

T

he burn is constant. It never goes away. I have to sleep in a chair now; the lifts on the bed don’t work anymore.” So many patients come see me for help with burning chest pain. Regardless of the name, the problem is the same, but the real issue is the longterm side effects of the drugs that are being hidden from the patients.

Normal Physiology The stomach produces acid to digest protein and absorb certain vitamins and minerals. Normally, our stomach has an acidity level with a pH of 1 or 2. That is extremely acidic. Our body is created to handle this acidity. Our stomach has a special lining to protect it, and we have a strong muscle (known as the lower esophageal sphincter) to prevent the stomach acid from ascending the esophagus. The production of stomach acid is essential for proper nutrition.

28

November 2010

The Symptoms The problem occurs when acid penetrates through the protective sphincter, leaving the stomach and entering the esophagus. This is when we feel the burn, the pain, and for some people, to actually taste the acid. The esophagus does not have the protective lining that the stomach contains, which is why we never feel acid in the stomach, we only feel it in the esophagus. Usually worse when we lie down at night to go to bed, some people put blocks under the head of their bed so they can sleep on an angle. Ask my father; while it helps the heartburn, he ends up falling off the foot of the bed by the next morning.

The Solution The Naturopathic Answer is easy for heartburn and GERD: stop acid from entering the esophagus. This is done by making sure the esophageal sphincter is closed tightly. Certain foods, especially coffee and alcohol, weaken the muscle, causing the burn. Many of my patients

www.naturalnutmeg.com

that stop drinking those two immediately have improvement of symptoms. Other patients respond well to visceral manipulation, which is a physical adjustment of the stomach to correct hiatal hernia causes of GERD.

The Problem Conventionally, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are given as the standard therapy for GERD. We’ve all seen the commercials of Instant Relief or Long-

Lasting 24 Hour Relief. These medications stop the stomach from producing acid. While that temporarily helps the symptoms, the bigger problem is that the stomach cannot digest food without the acid. This leads to three major nutrient deficiency diseases:

formula. They are cured by the next day and then everyone gets a good night’s sleep. I also perform visceral manipulation on the children to correct hiatal hernia causes of reflux.

Top 3 Nutritional Deficiencies Caused by Overuse of PPIs

It’s confusing when we feel burning pain and take acid stopping medicines, but in reality, what we need is more acid. We just need to keep it in the place where it belongs. While certain people need to take PPIs (mostly patients with gastritis or Barrett’s esophagus); most patients can stop taking them with a quick change in foods and visceral manipulation. I hope any of you or your children that are taking PPIs receive visceral manipulation and nutritional counseling. All of my patients receive a full nutritional screen to treat iron deficiency anemia, pernicious anemia, and protein deficiency to ensure damage hasn’t been done. The goal is always finding your Naturopathic Answer.

1) Iron Deficiency Anemia 2) Pernicious Anemia 3) Protein Deficiency Read the small print that comes with your PPI medication. It states that it should not be used for over a period of 8-12 weeks. Why? Because the drug companies know that you can get one of the top 3 nutritional diseases from taking the medicine for too long. Does your doctor tell you that? Probably not. They probably have you on the medication for months or years. Keep reading the fine print! These medicines are given to children with heartburn and colic. On their paperwork it states that this medicine works the same as placebo for children with heartburn. Why are we putting our children at risk for anemia with something that works the same as a placebo! The children with reflux in my office stop the medicine immediately with a change in food. If breastfeeding, mom has to stop caffeine and alcohol. If drinking formula, we switch to a dairy-free

Preventing Autoimmune Disease

O

ne of the faster growing areas of concern in chronic medicine is the genre of conditions known as autoimmune diseases. In individuals with an autoimmune condition, the immune system becomes deranged and begins to see part of the person’s own body as foreign and attacks it. These conditions vary widely; skin manifestation, organ failure, disability and even death can arise from the myriad of manifestations of an immune system gone awry. On the other hand, many people have autoimmune conditions where they experience very little symptoms, perhaps just the occasional achy joints or dry eyes. The interesting and frustrating fact about autoimmunity is the prognosis is very difficult to predict. Often time symptoms flare up and become worse for awhile, and then go back into remission. Symptoms are frequently managed by specialists depending on the condition; gastroenterologists, cardiologists, rheumatologists and neurologists may all be involved in helping assess the disease progression, using imaging and blood work. With more genetic research being done, scientists have found many autoimmune diseases have a genetic component. Often if one family member has an autoimmune condition, there may be an increased risk that other members will develop it or another type of autoimmune disease. Some conditions, like celiac disease, have the genetic testing readily accessible if a family member has the disease and there is concern for developing it. Other autoimmune diseases may not have a genetic marker identified yet or testing may not be available to the general public. For parents, siblings and other family members, prevention of autoimmunity and promoting a healthy balanced immune system should be a primary goal.

Vitamin D Sunshine and Vitamin D, which develops in our skin when we are exposed to sunshine, are probably one of the best ways to support the immune system. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that promotes a balance of immunity, both reducing autoimmune factors and promoting anti-viral and anti-cancer components. Our bodies will make up to 10,000 IU daily when exposed to sunshine, however, sun tan lotion will block up to 93% of Vitamin D production. Once our body has made its Vitamin D for the day it will not continue to make it. Getting a sunburn will not give you too much Vitamin D, your body will stop making it once it’s had enough, however because it is fat soluble you can over do it with supplementation. Research has found in autoimmune conditions like multiple sclerosis that Vitamin D can be helpful particularly in the developing immune system. The further away from the equator a person lives the first 15 years of their life (the main years

of development of the immune system) the greater the risk of developing multiple sclerosis.

Healthy Fats The outside of every cell in our body is made up of a phospholipid bilayer or in other words fats. The types of fats we eat determine the types of fats that become our cells. Saturated fats can be imagined as red, hot and inflammatory. Whereas polyunsaturated fats and most importantly essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-9, should be visualized as cool, blue and calming to the body. The more blue we make our cells, the calmer our immune systems will be. Research has found these omega-3 and 9 oils to be beneficial in both autoimmune prevention and treatment.

Exercise When we do aerobic exercise our immune system revs up and actually creates a small amount of inflammation. Researchers have known this for some time and actually use exercise states to study inflammation. Immediately after exercise, however, the immune system dips below the normal status before returning to its baseline. This spike and dip suggest that exercise is a wonderful way to reduce overall inflammation, by a natural little reset.

Stress Management and Balanced Hormones Researchers have found imbalances in sex hormones and stress hormones to not only exacerbate autoimmune conditions, but also promote them. For example, an increase in lupus symptoms has been associated with an imbalance in estrogen levels. Consequently, when the hormone imbalance was addressed, symptoms decreased. Treating underlying hormonal imbalances and working on stress management are excellent ways of preventing autoimmunity. Though we know there is a genetic and hereditary component to many autoimmune conditions, we also know there can be a profound impact with proper lifestyle and nutrition. Healthy sunshine, eating, exercise and stress management is an excellent way to promote balanced immunity. Itching, red skin? It could be Eczema….

Since many people with eczema also suffer from allergies, your doctor may perform allergy tests to determine possible irritants or triggers that can increase the symptoms. Children with eczema are especially likely to be tested for allergies. Because eczema can be caused by allergic factors, it’s important to know what allergic factors may be to blame for an outbreak of eczema.

There Are Many Possible Culprits: Some people who suffer from eczema find that their symptoms increase in direct response to eating certain foods. Some of the most common foods to increase eczema symptoms are: • Soy products • Dairy • Eggs • Sugar • Seafood • Fruit (mostly citrus fruits, but includes strawberries also) • Nuts • Wheat products • Salicylates • Edible chemical additives, including preservatives and food colorings.

What is Eczema? According to Princeton University, eczema is a generic term for inflammatory conditions of the skin. It is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction, which is similar to an allergy, and can lead to long-term inflammation in the skin. This inflammation, which can come from a variety of different irritants, often causes the skin to become very itchy, red and sometimes flaky. When eczema is present for long periods of time, the skin can thicken and darken due to the continued scratching that goes along with the condition. The most common type of eczema is known as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease states that the prevalence of atopic eczema is increasing and affects 9 to 30% of the U.S. population. It is particularly common in young children and infants. Many children will outgrow the symptoms before they are 5 years old. However, roughly half of the children with eczema may continue to experience the symptoms or develop other conditions such as hay fever, allergies or asthma.

What Are the Symptoms of Eczema? No matter which part of the skin is affected, eczema is almost always itchy. Many times the itching will start before any rash or redness appears. When the rash begins, it most commonly occurs on the face, behind the knees, at the elbow crease, the hands, or feet. However, it may also affect other areas as well.

32

November 2010

There can be many environmental triggers that can increase the symptoms of eczema as well. Some of the most common environmental triggers that increase eczema symptoms are: • Dust/Dust Mites • Pollens and Grasses • Pet Dander • Molds/Mildew • Personal care products: (soaps, shampoos, fragrances) • Chemicals Eczema has also been linked to the climate. Cold weather is especially notorious for its negative effects on skin. Even extreme heat may be to blame for some forms of eczema. Eczema and allergies are closely related. Hay fever, asthma, and allergies are all present on the same gene. Because of this, many of the things that trigger an allergic reaction can also cause eczema and contribute to the irritating symptoms associated with the condition. There are treatments available that can help to relieve or significantly reduce the symptoms associated with eczema. There is no need to continue to suffer with the symptoms. utumn brings an array of winter squash just waiting to be stuffed, baked and devoured. I’ll visit farmers’ markets and roadside stands to find the best medium acorn squashes for my Thanksgiving dinner. Stuffing them with a seasoned quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) mixture gives everyone a mouth-watering treat – including those following vegan, gluten-free, or dairy-free diets. The tiny quinoa seed is a flavorful nutritional powerhouse! It’s a great source of folate, iron, magnesium, zinc, healthy carbohydrates, fiber (5g per serving), and protein (8g per serving). In addition quinoa provides all eight of the amino acids that a body needs to repair itself. This side dish is full of earthy flavors and lends itself to your creativity. Feel free to switch the broth, juice, dried fruit and nuts to your favorites, perhaps dried apricots, currants, pecans or almonds. Make this your special holiday side dish or simply add a side salad for a perfect weeknight meal.

Know your Herbs

Lisl Meredith Huebner, Dipl.CH (NCCAOM), RH(AHG)

Black Cumin (Nigella sativa)

A

lthough Black Cumin is the moniker that most people in the West know the herb Nigella sativa by, it’s about as closely related to Cumin Seed as Broccoli is to Chamomile. Some of its other names are even more confusing: Black Seed, Black Onion Seed, Black Caraway, Black Sesame, and Roman Coriander, but Nigella sativa is absolutely unrelated to onion, caraway, sesame or coriander. Perhaps the Biblical name “fitch” should make a come back to mitigate the confusion, or we should honor the holier references like “Blessed Seed” or “Herb from Heaven.” Nigella sativa is a charming plant in gardens; it is approximately 18” tall and adorned with feathery leaves and white blossoms that may sport a bit of pale blue at the tips of the petals. Take note that the popular garden ornamental Nigella damascus (also known as “Love in a Mist”), is a related species, but is not considered medicinal; another relative, N. garidella is considered toxic. Nigella’s seed head is as attractive as her flowers; a balloon-like pod that encapsulates the pale seeds opens in the shape of a five pointed star. The small triangular seeds, covered with fine hair turn a matte black as they dry and mature. Growers of Black Cumin will harvest large bunches of stalks laden with pods before dawn to keep the dew from settling upon them, and dry them evenly over sheets so that the seeds will be easily gathered when the pods open. Some of the seeds are sown in September to ensure the next year’s crop, while the 34

bulk of the harvest is ground and coldpressed into oil in the traditional way. Some producers will seek to get more of the final product by extracting the oil with solvents; these chemically treated oils should never be used for healing. Always know your source and do not trust “sale items.” The best oil comes from Egypt, where traditional methods of cold expression have been passed down through generations. Black Cumin is native to the hot, dry climates of the Middle East, where the herb is so popular that more acreage is devoted to growing the Blessed Seed every year, and families are stockpiling the esteemed herb and its oil. Nigella sativa has a long history of healing human-kind, a reference to its value above wheat is found in the Old Testament, Book of Isaiah. For thousands of years the seed and its oil have been used for health conditions ranging from asthma and allergies to wounds and worms. A vial of the precious seed was found in the tomb of the Egyptian King Tutankhamen, www.naturalnutmeg.com

presumably to ensure his health in the afterlife. Black Cumin was frequently praised by the forefathers of modern medicine; In the Cannon of Medicine by Ibn Sina (980-1037) it states, “{Black Cumin}stimulates the body’s energy and helps recover from fatigue or dispiritedness.” Doiscorides used the herb to treat a variety of ailments and Hippocrates particularly favored it for liver and digestive complaints. Modern medicine recognizes that its strong antibacterial qualities make Black Cumin effective against Cholera, E. coli, and nearly all strains of Shigella (except S. dysentriae), comparing favorably –and in some instances outperforming- several pharmaceutical antibiotics. Black Cumin seeds are very nutritious; they contain 35% oil, most of which are Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) and 21% protein. The EFA’s like Linoleic Acid (LA) and Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) acid help strengthen and maintain cell integrity, heal skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, reduce wrinkles, and heal wounds. My friends and I discovered that Black Cumin Seed Oil (BCSO) makes an amazing sunscreen! To fancy it up a little, we would add a couple of drops of medicinal grade Lavender essential oil (my preference is Spike Lavender). With nothing but this, we have all avoided sunburn, even with our fair skin! Cleopatra herself used Black Cumin to enhance her beauty and vitality; taken internally or applied topically, the oil encourages smooth skin and a radiant

complexion. Try infusing a half cup of raisins in 8 oz of BCSO for about a week and then take one tablespoon of the mixture daily for beautiful skin. Beauty is not just skin deep however, and BCSO also addresses numerous internal conditions such as lowering blood pressure, improving brain function, as well as regulating the CNS and activating the immune system. Science has isolated more than one hundred chemical components in Black Cumin including 15 amino acids- eight of which are essential and cannot be produced by the body. Vitamins and minerals such as carotene, potassium, calcium and iron, as well as mono and polysaccharides also contribute to the overall benefits of BCSO. Thymoquinone and other volatile oils in BCSO exhibit strong anti-cancer properties that have been shown to increase apoptosis (programmed cell death) and can effectively suppress leukemia and pancreatic cancer. With the addition of Astragalus, the effect on normalizing white blood cells would be amplified. One of the volatile oils in BCSO, called Nigellone is a powerful antihistamine that is excellent for treating seasonal allergies and asthma symptoms triggered by a histamine response. The active properties of Black Cumin are vasodilating, mucous reducing and relax the airways, making it perfect for the treatment of asthma and chronic bronchitis. Taking a teaspoon of the oil twice daily in hot water or nettles tea and a little raw honey is a delicious way to reduce asthma and allergy symptoms without side effects. When taken longterm, at least 3-6 months, studies have indicated that BCSO can bring up to 90% improvement in allergy symptoms. Black Cumin is often used as a culinary herb, and like most herbs found in the kitchen, it has a beneficial effect on digestion. As a carminative, Black Cumin prevents bloating, gas and cramping, as well as relieving diarrhea and vomiting. Its pedantic effects on the alimentary canal does nothing to decrease the deliciousness of Black Cumin seeds sprinkled on naan, a tasty flatbread from India traditionally baked in a clay oven. Black Cumin seed is also a wonderful seasoning for stews, beans, cabbage and is indispensable when making curries or garam masala.

Add this wonderful, health-promoting seed to your spice cabinet, and don’t forget to include it in your recipes. For even more profound effects on your wellbeing, ask your herbalist for a bottle of high-quality Black Cumin Seed Oil from Egypt and take a teaspoonful twice a day in tea. The benefits listed in this article barely skim the surface of the numerous advantages that BCSO can give you in the form of Vitality, Vigor, Strength… and oh, did I mention Libido? ”HerbaLisl” Lisl Meredith Huebner, Dipl. Infrared Saunas... Healing Heat Warms the Body and Soul

S

ix months ago, I received an interesting call from my cousin who lives in southern California. He told me how he has been visiting a far infrared sauna spa and this has been wonderful for his mind, body and spirit. Steve lives a high stress life managing his investment portfolio, starting companies, and recently producing a pilot show for a proposed TV series. He has also been on the forefront of the wellness industry for many years, so when Steve talks health and wellness, I listen. While southern California has always been on the leading edge of health and wellness trends, and fads, saunas definitely aren’t a fad. The hot sauna is an ancient therapy that people have used for centuries to detoxify, relax and ease aches and pains. People who could tolerate the high heat (180-200°F) enjoyed sauna sessions, but 30-45 minutes of such extreme heat is not for all, and so popularity has always been limited. What differentiates an infrared sauna from a traditional sauna? Deeper Heat, Lower Temperature, Better Benefits. So why were people from LA down to San Diego suddenly flocking to infrared sauna spas? The answer could be found in the nature of this new type of sauna technology. 36

November 2010

Far infrared saunas operate at a significantly lower heat (roughly 120150°F) than traditional saunas, but by sending infrared heat deeper into the body, the new sauna provides superior benefits, including: • Detoxification. Detox from an infrared sauna is 7 to 10 times greater than a conventional sauna. In a conventional sauna the average person sweats out 3% toxins and 97% water. In an infrared sauna, the average person sweats out 20% toxins and 80% water! • Pain Relief. Researchers studying HRP (Heat Responsive Pain) have observed remarkable therapeutic benefits by using continuous low level heat therapy for treating lower back and upper body pain, all conditions that fall under the HRP classification. • Weight Loss. A 30-minute infrared sauna session can burn up to 200-600 calories! As the body works to cool itself while using an infrared sauna, there is a substantial increase in heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. Infrared heat therapy raises core body temperature, causing passive cardiovascular conditioning. Your body’s natural response to infrared heat therapy is to increase circulation and sweat. Check out the results with a heart rate monitor and you will be amazed! • Lower Blood Pressure. Infrared saunas were used in a clinical study with the University of Missouri Kansas City in 2005 and were shown to lower blood pressure from a 30-minute sauna session three times a week. Repeated www.naturalnutmeg.com

infrared treatment improves impaired blood vessel functions in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. This suggests a preventative role for sauna use for arteriosclerosis. • Improved Circulation. Heating of muscles with infrared produces an increased blood flow level similar to that seen during exercise. Body temperature elevation also produces an increase in blood flow. Infrared heat assists in resolution of inflammatory infiltrates, edema and exudates. The increased peripheral circulation provides the transport needed to help evacuate the edema, which can help end inflammation, decrease pain and help speed healing. • Skin Purification. Your skin’s appearance can noticeably improve with regular use of an infrared sauna. Infrared

heat therapy helps acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns and any skin lesions or cuts. It also reduces wrinkles, makes skin look radiant, firms and improves skin tone and elasticity. Open wounds heal quicker with reduced scarring. Regular use may also help reduce cellulite trapped beneath the skin, lessen the appearance of scars, and help burns heal significantly. The sauna is remarkably easy to install – it assembles in less than an hour with innovative magnetic connections. It’s available in several different sizes, all of which occupy a small footprint, so you can place one in nearly any location in your house – from your bedroom to your den to your gym to your basement. The newest infrared sauna also offers additional therapeutic features, including sound and light therapy and biometric feedback, which enables you to track your calorie burn, heart rate and blood pressure during each sauna session. Today I’m busier than ever, running multiple businesses and caring for my school-aged boys. I’ve kept my regular routine of good diet, exercise and meditation and have now added far infrared sauna therapy. I felt good before, but now am more relaxed and in the best physical, mental and spiritual condition. If you’re like me, and dread the cold, dark days of our long Northeast winters, consider an in-home infrared sauna. You can warm your bones, ease your pain and fortify your spirit in just thirty minutes a day. Ed Doris is the founder of Innovative Wellness Solutions, which provides products and services, including the premier line of in-home infrared saunas, designed to enhance our overall health and wellness. Ed can be reached at 877-407-5503. See ad on page 15.

Your Immune System: Boost it the Natural Way

I

t’s that time of the year when people ask, will my immune system see me through these cold months? Fall doesn’t have to mean falling ill because of the flu or being sick due to whichever virus or bacteria is in fashion. News in the medical community is rife with epidemics, and we wonder if we and our loved ones are at high risk once again. With all the things we do and have to worry about, the last thing we want is for our immune system to fail. Even with the advances in medicine, there are serious health risks we face from disease-carrying organisms in the air, in our homes, and in our offices.

Immune System: Timing and Preparedness We found this quote from Sharon Brown: "Many people are confused by what it means to be high-risk. It doesn't have anything to do with being at higher risk for exposure to the flu virus, such as teachers or bus drivers. People who are at high-risk are those whose health could be severely impacted if they were to contract the flu, such as those who have pre-existing health problems or a compromised immune system."

There are certain measures we can take so as to not compromise our immune system. Healthy eating, exercising regularly, and positive thinking will help our bodies fight infection more efficiently. If we’re not getting all the vitamins and minerals we need from our daily diet, there are products that will “repair” our immune responses and make up for what we lack. Health advocates agree that it’s not a good idea to depend on artificial products to stand the place of our immune system. A dependence on prescription drugs would in fact only weaken our immune system in the long term. The best thing to do is to act even before infection or disease attacks. Daily supplementation with natural products will help make our immune system more robust, more prepared, and more effective.

Natural Remedies for Your Immune System Erratic diet? Feasting on fast food too often? Processed foods in the freezer? Let’s face it; our North American lifestyles make it easy to ignore all the natural foods like fresh fruits and veg-

etables Mother Nature has given us. If we can’t fortify our bodies with essential vitamins and minerals from the foods we eat, there is hope. Luckily for us, there are products developed as whole food multi-vitamin and multi-mineral supplements. These supplements are made in the United States and are sourced from whole foods. That means there are no synthetic vitamins, artificial coloring or preservatives added. For those with recurring digestive trouble and who are deficient in enzymes, natural supplements that provide the “absent” enzymes in your body can make a big difference. Natural products that contain digestive enzymes help break down food so they can be carried throughout the bloodstream to various parts of the body. This assures that our cells, tissues, and organs receive the proper nutrients. They also process fats and carbohydrates so that our bodies do not store excess fat and sugar. Note that different enzymes – protease, bromelain, lipase, papain, amylase and others – also play an important role in the body’s chemical reactions. A serious lack of enzymes can make you susceptible to digestive disorders. People diagnosed with Celiac disease or Crohn’s Disease; for example, show that they have significantly lower amounts of digestive enzymes.

Probiotics and the Immune System When people suffer the symptoms typical of a weak digestive system, part of the blame is the lack of probiotics, which are the normal flora living in our gut. Doctors prescribe far too many antibiotics to people diagnosed with an infection. The problem with antibiotics is that they don’t distinguish between the good and bad bacteria. They eliminate even the good bacteria – the very same 38

bacteria that help us fight disease and infection! This is where we need to seriously consider taking natural probiotics, because they replace the “good soldiers” attacked by antibiotics. Look for a complete probiotic supplement. Purchase probiotics that contain billions of CFUs (colony forming units) and those that contain many different strains of flora. Probiotics also help prevent urinary tract infections. They are the immune system’s first line of defense because of the role they play in homeostasis in the intestinal tract. Put simply, homeostasis is a point of internal balance without which our bodies cannot maintain ideal temperatures required by the numerous chemical activities that occur on a daily basis.

Omega-3 Fish Oil and the Immune System No one will challenge the fact that Omega-3 fatty acids, as found in fish oil supplements, are excellent supporters of the immune system. For the purest fish oil, they must have gone through a molecular distillation process. This removes toxic metals from the fish oil. Omega-3 fish oils contain PUFAS (polyunsaturated fatty acids) that may help prevent arthritis, osteoporosis, depression and cholesterol. Perhaps the best Omega-3 oils are those that are sourced from wild caught fish. The oils from wild caught fish are much higher in quality than other fish oil supplements available in the market. People with heart problems are advised to eat more fish; if that isn’t possible, fish oil supplements are an excellent alternative. Our immune system, when properly cared for, not only wards off infection, but also protects us from chronic cardiovascular disease. This is why pure and natural Omega-3 fish oil supplements should be part of our daily routine.

Minerals and the Immune System Our immune system needs all the help it can get, so let’s not forget minerals and trace minerals. Daily supplementation of minerals like magnesium and potassium help to stabilize our central nervous system. They also ensure that our muscles contract properly. When magnesium and potassium are taken with other minerals like calcium, manganese and iodine, they keep our muscles, bones, and nerves in tip top shape. When we are not deficient in minerals, our immune system can function better. There are magnesium and potassium dietary supplements that contain other trace minerals to perform the functions expected of them. Look for supplements that are made in the USA and do not contain gluten or yeast. In order for our immune system to function its best, we need to be as healthy as possible. We want to avoid toxins and deficiencies, and nurture and strengthen ourselves with natural dietary supplements that provide the essential vitamins and minerals that we fail to obtain from the foods, or lack thereof, we eat. Lifestyle Modifications & Nutritional Supplements To Manage Type II Diabetes

“Hyperglycemia and excesses of ineffective insulin cause rampant free-radical activity . . . and increased inflammation. High blood glucose/high insulin levels = accelerated aging and an increased risk of premature death.” ~ Life Extension Disease Prevention and Treatment

A

re you one of the 17 million people in this country that has been diagnosed with Type II diabetes (“Type II”)? Or has your doctor warned that you are pre-diabetic or at risk for diabetes because you haven’t addressed your hypoglycemia? If you suspect that high blood sugar is compromising your health or may cause serious future health problems, see your doctor and keep reading to learn some natural ways to manage your condition.

What Is Type II Diabetes? The isles of Langerhans in the pancreas secretes the hormone insulin, which regulates glucose, the sugar the body

uses for energy. Type II diabetes is marked by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from either the inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas or the cells’ inability to use insulin (the more common cause, called insulin resistance/insensitivity). Insulin resistance is also a component of what Gerald Reaven, M.D., a Stanford University researcher, labeled Syndrome X (now called Metabolic Syndrome), a cluster of disorders that includes obesity, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and increased risk of heart disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, normal fasting blood glucose is below 100 mg/dl. A person with prediabetes has a fasting blood sugar level of 100-125 mg/dl, while a diabetic has a blood glucose level of 126 mg/dl or higher. Signs and symptoms include extreme fatigue (especially 2-4 hours after a meal), blurred vision, slow wound healing, unwarranted hunger, excessive thirst, and frequent urination. Since excess blood glucose attacks cells throughout the body, it can cause numerous health complications, including: (1) Alzheimer’s disease; (2) heart and vascular disease; (3) kidney disease (by damaging the nephrons, its filtration component); (4) neuropathy (nerve damage that can cause decreased muscle control and pain or lost sensation in the hands or feet and); (5) nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (due to the production of excess fatty acids and their conversion to triglycerides, which are stored in the liver, resulting in free-radical damage and inflammation); (6) obesity (insulin is the body’s primary fat-storage hormone, so a high insulin level promotes weight gain); (7) periodontal disease; and (8) eye problems (retinopathy, blood vessel damage in the retina; cataracts, blind spots in the lens; and glaucoma, abnormal eye pressure caused by an imbalance of production and outflow of eye fluid).

Prevention as Medicine: Critical Lifestyle Modifications The risk factors for Type II are age (usually sets in after age 40), ethnicity (African, Asian, and Native Americans, and Latinos, are at highest risk), lifestyle (lack of regular exercise lowers insulin sensitivity), diet, weight, smoking, prescription drugs, and genetics. Julian Whitaker, M.D., author of Reversing Diabetes and founder of the Whitaker Wellness Institute in California, maintains that individuals can take various steps to prevent and even reverse this condition. First, get rid of that belly! Maintaining a healthy weight is the most important therapy to prevent or reverse Type II. Men should aim for a waist circumference of less than 37” while women should target less than 34.5”. Body mass index (BMI), (which is not always an accurate weight evaluation tool) should be 18.5-24.9. 40

Regular aerobic exercise, resistance training/weight lifting, and a healthy diet, are the keys to long term reduction of excess body fat. Exercise need not be extremely strenuous, and even a 10-minute walk after meals can clear glucose out of your bloodstream. To maximize results, you should exercise 45-60 minutes once daily and your workouts should increase your heart rate and cause you to break a sweat. Consider working with a fitness trainer to obtain direction and motivation for a regular regimen. A “healthy diet” in this context: (1) excludes saturated, hydrogenated, or trans fats (beef, pork, lamb, or duck); (2) minimizes simple carbohydrates (foods with a high glycemic index: sweets; pasta; bread; potatoes; rice); and (3) includes low-sugar fruits (berries and apples), omega-3 fatty acids (especially in salmon, sardines, tuna, haddock, walnuts and pumpkin seeds), and an abundance of vegetables and legumes. Dr. Whitaker also recommends cinnamon (especially as an encapsulated extract), moderate amounts of high-quality dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa), apple cider vinegar (2 TBS, especially before a high-carbohydrate meal), and white tea. Also, don’t skip breakfast. Those who eat breakfast every day are 33-50% less likely to be obese and have insulin resistance. Stress reduction is also central to blood sugar control. Stress and anxiety can cause both Type II and Metabolic Syndrome and, if not controlled, can shorten lifespan.

Treatment: Drugs vs. Nutritional Supplements In addition to the lifestyle changes discussed above, there are two avenues for treating your diabetes.

The Conventional Approach Traditional doctors generally prescribe one of five classes of diabetes drugs. The drugs either stimulate pancreatic beta cells to release more insulin (thus weakening the beta cells more quickly and raising the risk of degenerative disease ), or decrease the liver’s production of glucose and make muscle and/or fat tissue more sensitive to insulin www.naturalnutmeg.com

November 2010

(e.g., metformin/ Glucophage, a more tolerated choice, but contraindicated with congestive heart failure, kidney and liver disease, and excessive alcohol use). All of the diabetic drugs have numerous potential side effects, including: (1) digestive problems such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, bloating/ gas/stomach pain, and appetite loss; (2) joint pain; (3) nervousness and sweating; (4) upper respiratory infections; (5) headaches/sinus irritation; and (6) heart disease and strokes.

Nutritional Therapies Many nutritional supplements are indicated in the treatment of the various complications attendant to Type II. The scope of this article permits just a brief discussion of some of those nutrients that help manage blood sugar, which are listed alphabetically for ease of reference rather than in order of importance. Bilberry: Two key flavonoids in this fruit reduce blood glucose levels. Choose a product that is standardized to contain 25% anthocyanidins. Chromium (Chromemate/GTF): This trace mineral combats insulin resistance and facilitates uptake of glucose in the cells and weight loss. Good food sources include brewer’s yeast and whole grains.

Conclusion Don’t ignore your symptoms if you suspect that you may be prediabetic or diabetic, or have been diagnosed with hypoglycemia. If you are overweight, start modifying your lifestyle to lose weight as soon as possible. If you would prefer to manage your blood sugar naturally, seek the guidance of an expert in alternative medicine and discuss your options with your doctor. The statements in this article have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. None of the nutritional supplements discussed herein are intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Submitted by Michael Dworkin, P.D., M.S., a Registered Pharmacist and State Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CT Certification #00203), with J. Erika Dworkin, Dip.C.N./ Board Cert. Holistic Nutrition (pending). Owner of the Manchester Parkade Health Shoppe (860.646.8178, 378 West Middle Turnpike, Manchester), Pharmacist Dworkin has been guiding patients since 1956 and is available for consultation by appointment. Erika is available to speak to groups. References are available upon request. The statements in this article have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. None of the natural remedies discussed herein are intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. See ad on page 11.

Gymnema Sylvestre: An herb that stimulates pancreatic production of insulin. Magnesium: Type II diabetics frequently suffer a deficiency in magnesium, which increases the number and sensitivity of insulin receptors, helps correct carbohydrate intolerance, and positively impacts ischemic heart disease, retinopathy, and vascular complications. Silymarin (Standardized): An antioxidant flavonoid from the herb milk thistle, silymarin lowers/stabilizes blood glucose levels and protects the liver, the most important tissue involved in insulin utilization.

42

Vanadium (As Vanadyl Sulfate): Found in shellfish and mushrooms, this highly effective trace mineral helps maintain normal blood sugar levels by mimicking insulin. November 2010

Reverse Summer Skin Damage

N

ow is the time to reverse summer skin damage and brighten your complexion before the holidays. The moderate, cool temperatures of fall in New England make it the perfect time to initiate a series of facial peels to reveal fresh, healthy, glowing skin. The skin is continually shedding old cells and replacing them with new cells. Young skin regenerates its surface every two to three weeks on the outer layer. Between the age of 25 to 30 cell renewal process slows considerably. Direct sunlight and pollutants are significant reasons for this slow down. Aging skin normally thins which allows access of free radicals to reach lower levels of the skin causing more damage. This is what causes our skin to appear dull with uneven thickened texture due to dead cell build up on the surface. Peels help your skin pick up the pace of cell turnover, giving you a brighter, younger appearance, managing the signs of aging, improving the appearance and feel of the skin, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Peels also assist in treating age spots, freckles and other superficial hyper-pigmentations of the skin. At Apple Rehab Sport & Spa we offer natural, gentle, effective ways to renew your complexion. We use, and offer, products from Pevonia Botanica, a natural product line, as well as Om Aroma and Co products which are 100% organic. These products use one or more natural acids such as lactic acid derived from milk, pyruvic flower acid from the hibiscus flower, glycolic acid which can be found in several fruits, and salicylic acids from willow tree bark. The type of peel used for each individual is determined by each client’s particular needs. Glycolic and lactic acids are natural humectants which aid in providing hydration to aging skin while

also lightening hyperpigmentation and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. Salicylic acid assists in controlling excess oiliness and blemishes. Prior to any peel it is advisable to speak with the esthetician who will be performing the service. Questions regarding the regular use of prescription medications, products you have used on your skin, and past facial experiences are important. This information helps the esthetician create a custom peel for your skin. In some instances (for example if you haven’t ever had a peel before) the esthetician may also want to perform a patch test to ascertain your skin’s sensitivity and determine which products will produce the best results for you individually. During the peel process, the skin is thoroughly cleansed, and then a solution containing one or more mixtures such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid or citric acid is applied to the areas of treatment. The chemicals react with the skin to gently remove the outermost layer of cells. This allows fresh skin cells to regenerate and emerge. A warming or slight stinging sensation may occur during the treat-

www.naturalnutmeg.com

ment which may last five to ten minutes. The peel is then neutralized, followed by a cooling, soothing mask. Your skin will be softer and brighter with the areas of dryness and uneven pigmentation lessened, leaving you looking and feeling refreshed and revitalized. It is recommended that this type of light peel be performed in a series of 5-6 treatments in order to produce the most optimal results. Following each treatment there should be no significant reddening, discomfort or peeling of the skin. Unlike the aftermath of a strong chemical peel, you will not require isolation or recuperation time. Vigorous exercise causing excessive body heat should be avoided for 24 hours following each treatment. In addition, it is important to avoid rubbing or scratching the treated areas. Direct sunlight and indoor tanning is to be completely avoided after treatment for several days. A quality sunscreen with an SPF of 30 should become part of your daily skin care regimen. We offer a sunscreen from Pevonia which incorporates natural ingredients for an SPF of 30, as well as an organic Om Aroma& Co. product, Red Raspberry Day Serum which has a natural sun protection and can be used daily as part of a regular skin care regimen. While in any ongoing peel process, do not use any products other than those recommended by your skin care professional. At Apple Rehab Sport & Spa we offer a kit of specially sized products that will take you through the recommended six-peel process, and provide you with written instructions. Have a bright healthy autumn! Submitted By Tina O’Dannel RN, Esthetician, Apple Rehab Sport & Spa. See ad on page 17.

Eden Manor

A Relaxed and Relaxing Rhode Island B&B

W

elcome to the very welcoming and aptly named Eden Manor Bed & Breakfast – a comfortable, roomy, reasonably priced B&B, in what might be the best location in Rhode Island. Selected as one of the Best Hotels in Rhode Island by the UpTake Travel Site, this 26-room Queen Anne Victorian is a find. We enjoyed a large guest room with 11 foot ceilings and looked out our windows at lawn, woods, and a fabulous old Copper Beech. Plus, we were in my favorite funky town in Rhode Island – Wakefield. Eden Manor was built for Jeremiah Robinson, a member of one of the oldest and most distinguished of Rhode Island families. It has been lovingly restored by Innkeepers Bernadette and Lloyd Eden, who have created a romantic yet eclectic environment. There are certainly plenty of Victorian touches… lace curtains, doilies, vintage furniture, claw foot tubs…but overall the feel was relaxed and whimsical. The website states, “We’re as Green as We Can Be.” I was skeptical, but in fact they more than qualify for Rhode Island Hospitality’s Green Certification. And the sweet part of that story is that

44

November 2010

they didn’t know there was a Rhode Island Hospitality Green Certification (it is a relatively new program) – they just try to do the right things. They use food from their own organic garden, supplemented by local food as much as possible. One morning I had local berries on my pancakes, and my husband had an omelet made with local eggs and vegetables. We dined on the big back porch, overlooking gardens and a gazebo. They buy their electricity from renewable sources, and they paid for recycling before it was mandatory. “It’s a sin to throw recyclables in the trash,” says Lloyd, “and even worse than filling the landfills is what we do to the earth when we mine for more aluminum, and make more glass.” They added interior storm windows, installed a geo-thermal assist, and all the light bulbs are CFL. They compost on-site, use a mulching lawnmower, and recently invited a farmer to hay the front field once a year (in the past Lloyd mowed it weekly). There are no televisions in the guest rooms (there is a huge one in the library), and there’s no air conditioning. I worwww.naturalnutmeg.com

ried about the latter, but we had lots of windows, a pedestal fan, and reasonable weather – we were very comfortable. There are no phones in the rooms either – but if you really can’t stand to ‘get away,’ I’m sure you have your crack-berry, and there is free Wi-Fi. The icing on the cake for this dog owner? You can bring your pet (with prior approval). I found a cat snoozing in the sunroom, and Lloyd and Bernadette have a well-mannered German Shorthair Pointer.

Wakefield Wakefield is a charming town with a fabulous yoga and holistic health center, an organic food store, a blown-glass gallery and shop, antiques, restaurants and gift shops. It’s convenient to everything - just moments from Rhode Island’s world-famous beaches, 10 minutes from Charlestown, 10 minutes from Narragansett, 20 minutes from Wickford,

and about 30 minutes from Newport and Providence. Not to mention that it’s close to the wonderful Theater by the Sea, golf courses, tennis courts, Mystic Seaport, the Connecticut Casinos (now there’s an eco-friendly destination), the University of Rhode Island, the Block Island Ferry, numerous parks and miles of bike trails - jeez, I sort of want to live there.

Eco-Friendly Activities This is the place for an entire ecofriendly trip. Eden Manor is close to miles of hiking, biking and running trails (including the William C. O’Neill Bike Path, which goes from Kingston to Peace Dale, Wakefield, and Narragansett Pier), as well as Burlingame State Park, the Kimball Wildlife Refuge, Ninegret State Park, Kettle Park, Trustam Falls, and roughly one-gazillion farm stands. The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is a 45 minute drive, but has a remarkable year-round array of programs, ranging from “Owl Prowls,” to coastal cleanups, preschool story times, photo tours, nature walks, and so much more. Eden Manor is located at 154 Post Road, Wakefield, Rhode Island. For informatin call toll free at 877-430-1613. www.edenmanorbandb.com. Author Deb Percival is a freelance writer in Connecticut. A monthly compendium of tips, thoughts, and updates about our shared home.

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas

I

s the meaning gone? Shopping like a puppet, manipulated by advertising? TAKE BACK YOUR HOLIDAYS!

Share with People Who Could Use a Hand

Involve the whole family. Powerful stuff. Bring cookies to elderly neighbors, sing carols, invite single neighbors to be part of your festivities, shovel someone’s driveway without being asked. One friend of mine and her son work in a soup kitchen every Christmas. In our family, a couple of us trade Heifer International gifts – last year I gave chicks to a family in her name; she gave honeybees to a family in my name. Also see www.greengrants. org, www.globalfundforwomen.org, www.globalfundforchildren. org and www.worldofgood.com. You might ask your house of worship if they have a program; call the town manager’s office to see if you can prepare or deliver meals to shut-ins; or contact a hospital or long-term care facility to learn about visiting people who are alone.

Homemade Gifts Some families exchange only things they’ve made themselves – a jar of jam or mustard, a batch of fudge, a scarf, a lavender sachet, a photo, a drawing, a poem, a recording of your fine tuba playing, a page of quotes that make you think of someone. Or find a studio and paint your own pottery. My siblings create the BEST calendars using photos of their kids. Try Snapfish, Walgreens, etc. Take it to the next level and write in the family birthdays. See http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food/holidays/ homemade-food-gift-ideas for some easy ideas and recipes. Speaking of recipes – how about a compilation of your favorite speedy weeknight meals, or a compilation of old family recipes.

Clean Air

Happy Holidays and Peace to all.

Spider plants and philodendron are great at scrubbing indoor air, and they’re easy to find, and propagate yourself. Look for funky planters at a consignment shop.

When You Must Shop When you think you must shop, try to shop locally, buy things that aren’t overly wrapped and are plastic-free. It’s nice to support local artists…ok, it’s nice to support all artists…and it’s nice to support artists from poor countries. Ten Thousand Villages offers fair trade jewelry, handicrafts and more made by artisans from around the world. There are stores in New Haven, South Windsor and West Hartford. In the same vein, check out this site: http://eco-friendly.novica.com. Loads of beautiful, unusual stuff.

And here’s a site that will make you glad you read this far! www.pristineplanet.com – “green comparison shopping.” Fabulous. Pampering – How about a gift certificate for an organic facial or massage, or relaxing and rejuvenating reflexology?! Ahhhhh. A little pampering after the holidays? I hope my husband is reading this… Event - take a loved one to a concert, play, museum, or sports game. Two of the most awesome gifts I’ve received were trips with my siblings to see Broadway productions. If someone on your list has an e-reader, how about gift certificates for the $10/each books. A refillable pen/pencil – perhaps made of wood – www.maplepens.com. The Guilford Ballpoint is $60, but it’s gorgeous, will last, and always fits. How about some neato chopsticks (portable ones are available too) and a certificate for a dinner at a sushi bar! (25 million trees are reportedly made into chopsticks each year.) Please inform the recipient that they are not to even think about eating anything with tuna or Ahi in the name. A compost tumbler, a rain barrel, a gift certificate to a garden center. The Smart Strip or EcoStrip. These surge suppressors automatically shut down devices that are not in use, preventing “vampire draw.” Perfect for computer systems and home entertainment centers. Rent a season of “Lost” to go with it. For more eco-friendly gift ideas, go to my Eco Tips column at www.naturalnutmeg.com and click on Dr. Diane’s Corner. You’ll find more gift ideas AND ideas for gifts for kids, gifts from kids, two office party ideas, and some ideas for eco-friendly decorations and cards. Send me your eco-friendly ideas for gift giving! I’ll publish them and give you credit in a future article. I’m at dpercival@ comcast.net.

Author Deb Percival is a freelance writer in Connecticut. Contact dpercival@comcast.net. Correction: In last month’s ezine I said that the Evolve Showerstart Showerhead only trickled water until the hot water reached the showerhead. My mistake. The showerhead lets the water come fullblast until it gets hot – then it slows to a trickle. So if you’ve wandered off you won’t waste much hot water. It still could be a good product, but it doesn’t do what I need. I will be looking into “instant hot” solutions. Stay tuned for a future column.
