PUBLISHER'SLETTER
W
ith the holidays approaching and our theme of metabolic syndrome this month, I thought it would be helpful to provide some strategies to fire up your metabolism and ignite your fat burning potential! .
1. Eat enough of the right food in the right amount and right proportions. Doing this on a daily basis will help get your metabolic rate functioning correctly again and even speed it up. The right food means healthy, lean protein (chicken, wild salmon, tuna, egg whites), low glycemic index carbohydrates (oatmeal, whole-grain bread, apples, berries), and healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, almonds, sunflower seeds). The right amount means that you have calculated how many calories you need on a daily basis to maintain a healthy weight, and you are knowledgeable about portion sizes (the biggest culprit in weight gain!). The right proportions means balancing your meals with carbs, fat, and protein. A good ratio to start with is 40-50% carbohydrate, 30% protein (or 1 gram per pound of body weight), and 20-30% fat. Then space your meals evenly throughout the day as to maintain less fluctuation in your glucose and insulin levels. Five to six smaller meals a day is much healthier than 2-3 larger meals. Many people think that in order to lose weight they need to cut calories. Well, this may be true if you’re eating at McDonald’s every day and taking in twice the amount of calories you need on a daily basis. But for the average person, it’s not too many calories that is the problem – it’s not enough of the right kind of calories. 2. Add strength training to your exercise routine. Strength training triggers your body’s release of growth hormone, which is essential for fat burning and increasing your metabolic rate. Numerous studies have shown that participating in a strength training session pumps up your metabolism for 2-3 hours postexercise and sometimes even longer. 3. Change up your aerobic exercise routine with interval training. The higher the exercise intensity, the greater amount of fat and carbohydrate burned during the exercise session. An added benefit of high intensity training is that more fat will be burned post-exercise during your recovery period. Instead of running for 30 minutes at 70% of your max heart rate, try interspersing one minute sprints. Sprint for one minute and slow to a light jog for two minutes. Repeat until reaching 30-45 minutes. 4. Get enough sleep. All the benefits of the right diet and the right exercise program can be negated if you’re not getting enough sleep. Growth hormone is released while you sleep and is necessary for rebuilding muscle and many other important metabolic functions. Add all these up and you’re on the right path for firing up that metabolic rate and burning more fat all day long! In health and happiness,

Nutmeg “Nuggets” WHY Power Yoga Teacher Training: You’re Extraordinary. Pass It On.
L
ife can get crazy at times—work, family, activities—and it can be challenging to carve out 90 minutes a day for a yoga class, never mind a 200-hour teacher training program. But what if that program could strengthen your body, calm your mind, boost your confidence, and improve your overall health? If you love yoga, you will love this training. If you want to share that passion, or if you simply want to immerse yourself in a community of like-minded individuals, the West Hartford Yoga (WHY) 200-hour Power Yoga teacher training is for you.
1) Deepen your practice. Whether you’ve been practicing yoga for a few months or a few years, a teacher training program can help you learn about body types, injuries, flexibility, and strength. You will practice more frequently and explore new, challenging postures. As you begin to study each pose, you will learn about alignment, modifications, and proper breathing, all while growing stronger in a safe, supported environment. WHY Power Yoga is a thoughtful and precise style of yoga created by Barbara Ruzansky, integrating her 25 years of experience with such modalities as Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow, Forrest Yoga®, Kripalu, and Bikram Yoga. It challenges body and mind, builds core power, promotes a cleansing sweat, and offers the opportunity for deep healing and release. 2) Self-Discovery. A good teacher training program can bring you closer to understanding yourself. As you work your way through physical and mental challenges, you will also learn how to help others through theirs, discovering a voice within yourself you never realized you had! By identifying how to be present both on and off the mat, you will begin to live with increased authenticity and passion. As a bonus, you may also recognize how to better take care of yourself through nutritional awareness, a healthier inner conversation, and the development of intuition, empathy, and compassion. As one of WHY’s trainees so succinctly summarized, “Simply put, the WHY teacher training has somehow marked the actual beginning of my life.” 3) Leadership Skills. A yoga teacher training program can help you break free from inhibitions and discover your true voice. As a result, you will leave the program with increased confidence, with the ability to speak clearly and gracefully in front of a group, to remain calm during moments of physical and mental stress, and to lead others towards a common goal. The WHY Power Yoga training encourages you to read and feel the energy of others, which not only allows you to teach with effectiveness, it also gives you amazing skills that you can take back to your daily job. 4) Support and Friendship. Last, and most important of all, you become part of an amazing yoga family that develops during the training. Everyone around you is experiencing their own struggles and dealing with their own insecurities. Together, you will learn to break down barriers, give and receive support, and accept others for who they are, creating a powerful bond that can last years, if not a lifetime.
SUCCESS
A yoga teacher training program is a significant commitment with many potential rewards. Whether or not you decide to become a teacher, the WHY Power Yoga teacher training will leave you with the tools you need to continue on your healthy, holistic journey along with enough friendship and support to last a lifetime.
MATTERS. FOR EVERYONE.
Want to know more? West Hartford Yoga is offering a free information session on Friday, November 13, 7:45 – 9:00 pm with Barbara Ruzansky and her senior instructors. Complete details available online at www.westhartfordyoga.com/why_trainings.htm. See ad on page 8.

auren Stone is a Board Certified Holistic Health and Integrative Health practitioner. Originally drawn to holistic medicine in search to heal her own children, Stone chose to make it her career after experiencing the positive effects first hand. Stone is currently a physician at Cornerstone Integrative Care in Wilton, CT. Cornerstone is a foundational healing practice specializing in Autism and Auto Immune Dysfunction. Several holistic treatment options are available, including homotoxicology. Homotoxicology is the study of toxins within the human body. Its main focus is to help the body eliminate toxic substances, thus restoring it to optimal health. Often times, the body does not realize that a toxin is there because it is deeply hidden within tissues. Unfortunately, traditional medications do not get in the cell to drive the toxin out efficiently. This form of treatment is a gentle way to detoxify. Using synergistic remedies and multiple homeopathic vibrations, homotoxicology is a way to wake the body up. The body is innately intelligent; homotoxicology is a means to educate the body to work and become stronger. The use of this treatment provides direction for the body to follow, allowing pathways to open for the elimination and drainage of toxins.
Unique, Accredited Masters and Certificate Programs in Emerging Fields of Inquiry
Dr. Stone believes in building a team for patients. Having both a holistic and traditional physician provides clients with the best care. Homotoxicology is a way to get to the root causes of an issue faster. Using medication after initial treatment can further enhance the healing process. This is a delicious winter salad recipe, perfect for your holiday table. The recipe was originally published in my Holcomb Farm CSA Simply Fresh blog.
Delicata Squash By Julie Wern ntil I became a CSA member, I admit that I shunned more unique types of winter squash, particularly Delicata. It was unfamiliar and I figured that, like butternut, it would be a pain to peel. I took one look at the fine ridges along its length and said “No way. I’m not peeling that!” Once I learned more about this gem, I realized it was one of the easiest winter squash varieties to cook, mainly because its skin is thin and edible-no peeling necessary. Additionally, I realized that its oblong shape makes it infinitely easier to cut than, say, an acorn squash.
U
Another reason I found to love Delicata is its nutritional value. It is relatively low in starchy carbohydrates and calories and contains very impressive levels of important vitamins and minerals (especially vitamins A and C). Further, because we tend to eat the skin, we benefit from the added fiber and important micronutrients inherent in vegetable skins. Delicata squash is oblong and has creamy white skin with dark green striping. It tastes similar to butternut squash, but with a firmer cooked texture. It will keep for at least a month in cool, dry, dark (but not too cold) storage. Squash that has bruises or other damage will spoil more quickly. Delicata can be baked, steamed, or boiled. Here are some specific preparation ideas. Simply baked--Slice lengthwise, seed, keep in two halves or slice into slices. Drizzle with a bit of preferred fat. Sprinkle with salt and pepper or maybe a bit of brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves and/or maple syrup. Cover (if whole) and bake at 375 until tender. Stuffed--Stuff baked delicata halves (see above) and then rebake, uncovered, to warm through. Suitable stuffing ingredients are cooked greens, nuts, rice or grains, cooked ground meats, cheeses, bread crumbs, and dried fruit (e.g. cranberries, raisins). Soups/stews --Dice and add to soups/stews at the end of cooking. Cook until just tender. Great this way in chili, vegetable soups, bean soups, and meat soups/stews. For a creamy soup, roast seeded halves with skin. Scoop out flesh, leaving skin behind, and puree with cooked onions or leeks, broth, and spices. Braised--Slice lengthwise, seed and slice into pretty half moons. Braise with a bit of cider, broth, wine, and/or fruit juice (like orange or apple juice). Layered (like in “lasagna” or casseroles)--Layer baked, sliced squash in a casserole dish with other ingredients such as cheese, greens, white sauce, or nuts and bake until hot throughout. 10
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
Arugula and Delicata Salad with Spiced Apple Cider Vinaigrette Serves 4 Ingredients: • 1 medium Delicata squash, washed • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar • Ground cinnamon • 2 teaspoons whole grain mustard • Ground cloves • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 cup unfiltered organic apple cider • 6 cups arugula, washed and dried • 1/2 stick cinnamon • 3 tablespoons dried cranberries • 4 whole cloves • 1/2 cup pecan halves, toasted • 2 tablespoons finely chopped shallot • goat cheese or sharp cheddar, crumbled or cut into small dice (optional) 1. Preheat oven to 400º. Brush or spray a rimmed baking sheet with coconut oil. Cut squash in half lengthwise and remove seeds. Cut into thin half moons. Place in an even layer on the baking sheet. Spray or brush well with coconut oil. Sprinkle with sea salt, ground cinnamon and cloves. Bake for 6 minutes. Turn pieces and bake an additional 6-12 minutes or until squash is tender but not beginning to burn. Remove from oven and allow to cool while preparing the rest of the salad. 2. In a small saucepan, heat apple cider, cinnamon stick and cloves over medium-high heat until mixture is reduced to 1/3 cup, about 15 minutes. Allow to cool. In blender, blend reduced cider, shallot, cider vinegar, mustard and olive oil until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss arugula to taste with cider vinaigrette (you may not need to use all the vinaigrette). 3. Divide dressed arugula among four salad plates. Top with slices of Delicata, toasted pecans, cheese and cranberries. Serve immediately.

Ask Dr. Jeff! Your Veterinary Homeopath By Jeff Feinman, VMD, CVH
W
hat’s the best food to feed your dog? Does your cat need to be vaccinated? How about your itchy pup or vomiting feline?
I’m excited to be here to answer all of your natural and holistic veterinary care questions! Many of the readers of this magazine have probably already adopted a holistic lifestyle for themselves. There’s not much question anymore in the general medical community that doing so helps us live longer and healthier lives. Thirty years ago when I graduated from veterinary school, there were no readily available commercial raw foods. Vaccinations were given annually (or more often). Reliable natural, holistic veterinary care was been hard to find. Not anymore. Viv from Bethel asks, “I have a general question for Dr. Jeff. My 8-year-old miniature Schnauzer recently died from complications due to chemotherapy. I also have a 2-year-old mini and want to help keep her from having problems. Is there anything special that I should do?” Great question! First of all, Viv, my condolences for your loss. This article about coping with the loss of a pet might help a bit: http://bit.ly/vZrQMz. There are various ways to help prevent serious problems from developing. Though I can’t list them all, you will find many answers at: http://bit.ly/1MZ0r6t.
12
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
The most important step that you can take is to adopt a holistic view of your pup’s health. There are many specifics relating to diet, vaccination, symptom treatment, etc. However, regardless of how you treat your dog, it’s most critical to keep your eye “on the prize.” As an owner, using behaviors and signs (both subtle and more obvious) of the whole dog is important in the assessment of optimal health and longevity. One particularly bothersome problem might resolve with treatment. But if another, seemingly unrelated problem arises, then the pup might have actually moved towards a worsening level of health – even in the absence of the original concern. Dr. Beal and I recently discussed this very issue. This very important question is discussed a bit further at: http://bit.ly/1usOZ98. Joe from Fairfield ponders, “My cat sometimes asks me to pet him, but after a few minutes of petting, he turns around and bites me. Is he just being mean?” No Joe, he’s not being mean. It’s great that he wants to interact with you by being pet. Some cats don’t like to be pet at all, while others are easily over-stimulated. Try restricting your petting to just a few seconds at first; concentrate on rubbing his head and neck area. Watch his tail. If you start to see it flicking around, he is getting over-stimulated and you need to stop petting him. Eventually you will learn where, and for how long he can tolerate petting without lashing out at you.
Marci in Bethel asks, “Dr. Jeff, my local veterinarian is open-minded about my minimizing vaccines, feeding fresh food and herbal and homeopathic treatments. Unfortunately, even though he’s supportive, he doesn’t know much about these treatments. What can I do?” Wow, you’re very fortunate to have a supportive veterinarian, Marci. It sounds like now is a great time to add a well-trained, holistic veterinary homeopath to your veterinary health care team. They can work with and guide both you and your veterinarian. You can find one of us at: http://bit.ly/1fSLvtE. Susan from Avon wonders, “My dog gets ear infections a few times a year. My vet says that they are from swimming or that the groomer gets her ears wet. What can I do?” Hi Susan. Recurrent otitis (inflammation of the ear canal) is one of the many “common,” but abnormal problems that are early warning signs of internal imbalance http://bit.ly/HcCy6A. You can keep her ears dry after swimming or bathing by wiping them out with a cotton ball or tissue. Powdering them lightly with cornstarch is an effective method as well. If this is sufficient - great! If not, however, address the underlying imbalance and her tendency to generate ear symptoms with a veterinary homeopath. Doing so should not only help her current ear problems, but should also prevent other problems in the future. For many other answers and to join our discussion, go to Ask Dr. Jeff on the web at: http:// bit.ly/GXmLYA Dr. Jeff is a 1985 University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine graduate. After 1 year working as an emergency clinician, Dr. Feinman started Fairfield County’s first holistic house-call practice. In the mid-nineties, his continued clinical research in holistic medicine led him to study homeopathy. By 2000 he became the first certified veterinary homeopath (CVH) in Connecticut. Dr Jeff’s clinical practice currently focuses on both prevention and treatment of serious diseases in dogs and cats. Dr. Jeff can be reached at: drjeff@certifiedvethomeopath.com. See ad on page 12.

Based on the principle of the energetic body, as taught in Chinese medicine, BioSet utilizes the latest in modern computer technology to screen and treat patients. The community is offered a unique melding of ancient wisdom and modern science in the form of a non-invasive, holistic healing modality. As we are taught in basic biochemistry, all substances, living and non-living, emit energy. Atoms attract and repel one another, building molecules and eventually complex structures, while creating energy frequencies that interact in positive and negative ways. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this energy flow is called Chi (Qi). Looking through an electron microscope, you can actually map this complex pattern of waves and frequencies. All substances have their own unique wave pattern or “song” that they sing energetically. In TCM, disease or bodily dysfunction is thought of in terms of “blocked” energy flow. Biochemically, this means that somewhere within your body, the electromagnetic song, wavelength, or frequency of your unique molecular structure is being blocked by that of some competing substance. This substance could be a number of things including food, pollen, chemical, virus, or bacteria. According to the energetic model offered by TCM, this initial impasse is the hallmark of disease. When there is blockage, there is reactivity and when reactivity remains unchecked, disease follows. BioSet measures the body’s energy flow and checks for energy blockages by using either electro-dermal screening techniques, or muscle testing. By introducing the energetic signature of a potentially reactive substance into the body’s energy field, the BioSet practitioner can determine whether or not a person is reactive (allergic). If the body’s energy flow remains strong, the person is non-reactive. However, if energy flow tests prove to be blocked, a reactivity or sensitivity is present. By activating specific acupressure points along the spine, the BioSet practitioner is then able to clear for the blockage and thereby, clear for the sensitivity as well. Once the blockage is cleared and the energy flow is strong, the physical symptoms associated with the sensitivity will also diminish. Thus, if you are reactive to pollen and you clear for pollen, you will no longer experience the physical symptoms associated with it (i.e., sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, etc). The same is true for all food and environmental sensitivities. 14
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
When eliminating food and environmental sensitivities with the BioSet technique, it is important to follow certain clearing protocols, preparing the body to accept and retain treatments. There are five preliminary clearings that a patient must undergo before branching out into individual programs. These are amino acids and protein metabolism, phenolics, vitamins and minerals, sugars, and fatty acids. The order of these treatments is purposeful. In order to properly clear for any complex food item, one first needs to clear for the individual, component parts of the food in question (i.e., clear for vitamin C before clearing for oranges). After these preliminary clearings are out of the way, in most cases, only one session is required to successfully and permanently clear a sensitivity. In addition to being an effective means of reducing symptoms related to food and environmental sensitivities, BioSet is also an effective means of helping to reduce inflammation, and facilitating detoxification. In the same way that BioSet reduces allergic reactivity to foods and pollens, clearing for a toxin helps to re-educate the body’s immune response regarding the toxin in question. When clearing for metals, parasites, and chemicals, not only do you help the body let go of toxic elements more efficiently, but also reduce the body’s reactivity. This helps to reduce the negative physical and behavioral side effects often associated with detox reactions. BioSet and Children Children comprise the bulk of my practice and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with them. I came to BioSet in my search to heal my own children, and chose to make it part of my practice because of the success we experienced personally. BioSet works on a range of childhood disorders including autism, ADHD, asthma, and chronic sinus and ear infections. Its success lies in the fact that BioSet heals the child from the inside out. Children who suffer from these and other issues are highly sensitive individuals with overly reactive immune systems. More often than not, these children suffer from multiple food intolerance and environmental sensitivities. Because they are so reactive, their immune systems become easily overloaded simply fighting off everyday foods, which are misperceived as foreign antigens. The results are that these children often have little immune support left to fend off real threats in the form of bacterial or viral infections. Likewise, because they are reactive to so many foods, they neither digest, nor absorb their nutrients efficiently. Thus, vital organ systems are effectively undernourished, including the brain, which relies on a variety of proteins
and fatty acids to produce the appropriate neurotransmitters essential in forging neural pathways. After clearing for food intolerances as well as chemical and environmental sensitivities, most children experience a marked improvement in both their physical symptomatology, and their emotional wellbeing. Making Good Choices Perfection is not the goal, it is impossible. Striving for perfection can create stress in our lives, and of course, guilt when we don’t achieve it. But by generating the effort to make better choices most of the time, we can improve our health by leaps and bounds! It’s helpful to consider that inflammation is the underlying cause of most diseases and illnesses today. When we avoid inflammatory foods and adopt a clean eating lifestyle, we can prevent illness and promote greater health and longevity in our whole body. Dr. Lauren Lee Stone came to BioEnergetic Medicine in the search to heal her own children, and chose to make it her career after experiencing its success first hand. In addition to a B.A. from Yale University and a Ph. D. from Cornell University, Lauren has a Masters in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport. She also holds advanced certifications in BioSET, Quantum Reflex Analysis, and is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, a Board Certified Integrative Health Practitioner, a board member of Epidemic Answers and a distinguished member of the American Association of Integrative Medicine. Optimizing Women’s Health and Fertility with Essential Oils
By Patty Almeida, RN, BSN
I
t is no mystery that a woman’s body is profoundly affected by her hormones. It seems like we go through life on this roller coaster ride of ups and downs, being tossed back and forth by our fluctuating hormones. The effects on our physical and psychological health do not have to be so turbulent. Essential oils have been shown to balance hormones in many ways. Do you suffer with menstrual irregularities, fertility challenges, decreased libido, vaginal dryness, hot flashes, irritability, anxiety, depression, mood swings, headaches and sleep disturbances? Essential oils may be the answer to your needs. What are essential oils? Distilled from flowers, stems, roots, bark and other plant materials, essential oils are the essences of plants that embody their regenerating, protective, and immune enhancing properties. They are powerful antioxidants, many of which have antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral and antiseptic properties. The use of plant essences and essential oils for health and healing dates back to early civilizations. The Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks, Romans and many other nations knew the beneficial properties of essential oils. It wasn’t until the mid - 19th Century that they regained popularity for their fragrance. French chemist René Maurice Gattefosse was known as the “Father of Aromatherapy.” He is said to have coined the term aromatherapy after discovering the healing properties of essential oils while working in his laboratory. Gattefosse successfully healed his burned hand with the essential oil of pure lavender. The essential oils of today can provide us the same natural approach to health and wellness as our ancestors. However, unlike the days of our descendants, in this modern era we have so many brands of essential oils to choose from. When choosing to use one, it’s important to understand that not all essential oils are created equally. Quality is of the utmost importance to ensure you are using safe and effective oils. Always ensure that you are using certified pure therapeutic grade medicinal essential oils. How do you use essential oils? Essential oils can be used in a number of ways including aromatically or topically. They can be diffused in the air, applied in a room spray, added to a bath, combined in a massage oil blend or applied topically on an area. The method in which you choose to utilize the essential oils depends on the oils being used and the effects you are trying to achieve. Some oils are more beneficial when applied to specific areas of the body while others are best used via inhalation.

Regardless of which method of application you choose, they will have an effect on your hormones. For example, many plants have estrogenic properties; they contain phytoestrogens – compounds similar in structure to estrogen. Robert Tisserand in The Art of Aromatherapy wrote of the ability of oils such as geranium, basil and rosemary to stimulate the adrenal cortex, which produces hormones. In addition, Dr. Daniel Pénoël and Pierre Franchomme have explained in their publishings how some oils normalize hormonal secretions. These are just a few of the many essential oils that are helpful for women: • Geranium (pelagonium gravolens) is an adrenal cortex stimulant. It helps to balance women’s hormones, calms emotions, and helps decrease stress. This is helpful to menopausal women. Geranium also moistens mucus membranes, therefore, it’s beneficial for those with infertile cervical mucus. • Clary sage (salvia sclarea), not to be confused with sage, helps to regulate hormones. It is a libido booster, uterine tonic, and helpful in menstrual cramps. • Rose (rose damascene) is prized oil. It is useful for premenstrual issues, regulates the menstrual cycle, and is a soothing and uplifting oil. Rose is also known for its aphrodisiac qualities and for promoting vaginal secretions. • Ylang-Ylang (canaga odorata) oil is known to soothe anxiety and tension. It has phytoestrogenic effects and elevates sexual energy. • Lavender (lavandula angustifolia) is useful for women with irregular or scanty periods; this oil balances the endocrine system. It is calming and helpful for mood swings associated with hormonal imbalances. • Sweet fennel (foeniculum vulgare) is the most effective phytoestrogenic essential oil. It helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and fluctuating hormones. Sweet fennel is also helpful for lactating women. • Neroli (citrus aurantium) is a mood balancing oil that helps calm the mind. It is useful for anxiety, depression and stress. • Jasmine (jasminum gerandiflorum) is an overall female reproductive system regulator and uterine tonic that helps strengthen the female reproductive organs.
There are many more oils and combinations that can be useful for women. Six Baby Steps to a Healthier Pregnancy By Spencer Richlin, MD hether you plan to start a family now or in a few years, there are things you can do that will help improve your chance of a healthy pregnancy. Starting these habits even 90 days before conception can have an impact on a patient’s overall health. The following tips will help boost fertility and give mom and baby the best possible chance of a healthy pregnancy and child.
W
1. Make an Appointment with Your OB/GYN If you’re considering getting pregnant in the near future, you should check your fertility and reproductive health today. Make your annual appointment with your OB/GYN for a physical exam and blood tests, which may include testing of your follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and anti-mullerian hormone (AMH). These are easy ways to check your hormone levels and physical well-being. Since AMH is not effected by estrogen and other hormones, it can be tested at any point in the menstrual cycle and even in patients on birth control pills. AMH is a protein secreted by small follicles in the ovary that decreases gradually over a woman’s reproductive years; the level of this hormone is one of the best markers of a woman’s ovarian reserve or her fertility potential. If your OB/ GYN does not routinely conduct this test, you may want to consider asking for it. Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT) hosts several complimentary events throughout the year where women can have their AMH tested. The next event is on Thursday, December 3, 2015 from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at our Stamford office. For more information about this event and others, please visit www.rmact.com and click on “events.” 2. Track Your Monthly Cycle Women with predictable cycles know when they are ovulating and therefore can determine the best time for intercourse. Ovulation kits can also be helpful for determining the best window of time. Irregular ovulation or missed periods may be an indication of fertility challenges. 3. Get More Sleep There are many reasons to get good quality sleep for seven to nine hours each night. First, sleep is the body’s natural healer. During sleep, the body rejuvenates, repairs, grows, and promotes optimal immune system functioning. When we deprive ourselves of sleep, the body grows increasingly stressed, damaged, and more prone to illness.
18
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
Second, irregular sleep patterns or too little sleep disrupts hormonal balance in the body. This affects reproductive hormones such as testosterone and estrogen, which regulate ovulation and fertility in general. Cortisol, also known as the “stress hormone,” is effected by inadequate sleep. Chronic elevation of cortisol leads to elevated blood sugar, insulin resistance, and weight gain. Making this situation more complicated, when Cortisol is chronically elevated, it interferes with the production of melatonin and makes it difficult to sleep. Good sleep habits include going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday, even on weekends. Here are other ways to ensure a good night’s sleep: • Avoid watching television or doing work or homework in bed. • Avoid checking your cell phone throughout the night. • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine 4-6 hours before bedtime. • Don’t take naps. • Exercise every day, but avoid doing it 4 hours before bedtime. • Avoid eating or drinking in the few hours right before going to bed, as these might lead to sleep disruptions. 4. Manage Stress Stress can manifest in several physical conditions, including high blood pressure, suppression of the immune system, irritability, anxiety, depression, anger management issues, and possibly even infertility. Stress management is important for each patient’s health; it has a surprising effect on pregnancies and baby’s health. There isn’t conclusive clinical data that determines if stress is a factor in fertility. However, there is no downside to managing stress. Anecdotally, I can see the benefits in my patients when they have techniques in place to manage their stress, particularly since fertility treatments can bring additional stress into our daily lives. For many of my patients, mind-body techniques such as yoga or meditation are helpful; exercise can also be beneficial. However, keep in mind that moderate exercise such as walking is preferred. I also recommend doing something with your partner that you both enjoy, whether it is traveling, taking a class or simply going for a walk together. Maintaining this relationship can help alleviate stress and prepare you for the next step as a couple – becoming a family. This is also an opportunity to strengthen your communication and to discuss topics related to your dreams for a family, including how big of a family you want and when you want to start trying.
5. Boost Folic Acid Nutrition and eating habits impact every aspect of our bodies. The more we know about nutrition, holistic health and epigenetics, the more importance we place on the foods we consume. If there is only one change that you make to your nutrition prior to conception, increase your folic acid intake. This has been clinically proven to significantly reduce the incidence of birth defects, known as neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, which occurs when the spine and back do not close during development. At RMACT, our nutritionists recommend that patients take prenatal vitamins that include 800 mcg of folic acid. Additionally, folic acid or folate, which are forms of water-soluble B vitamins, occur naturally in foods such as leafy vegetables (such as spinach, broccoli, and lettuce), fruits (such as bananas, melons, and lemons), beans, orange juice, and tomato juice. 6. Minimize Bad Habits We all have bad habits… alcohol, cigarettes and the most common of them all, caffeine. When you are preparing for pregnancy, you should minimize alcohol and caffeine consumption and eliminate smoking all together. This is good for the intended parents’ health and it is imperative for egg and sperm health. Women should limit their drinking to less than three servings of alcohol per week (one serving is 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits) and lower caffeine intake to 150 mg per day (one 8 ounce cup of brewed coffee).

How to Cure the Busy Lifestyle Syndrome (BLS) By Juliette Taylor
S
o what is BLS? Sounds more like bullshit but unfortunately it is not. It’s the real deal and all of us suffer from it, well maybe not all of us, but most of us, myself included.
According to doctors at CPS Research, a Glasgow-based clinical trials company, the syndrome is caused by hectic lives bombarded with information overload from mobile phones, BlackBerrys, TV, radio and the Internet. “We believe there are widespread signs of the problem,” says spokeswoman Angela Scott-Henderson, “Our attention spans and concentration levels are going down. It’s getting to be more common, affecting people at younger ages.” http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/why-are-we-so-forgetful-again/story-fneuz9ev-1226544547362 Lunches in Italy It’s real. It’s really real. And we know it. We see it in our children when they can’t make eye contact during a conversation. We see it in ourselves when we scroll from one site to another on our phones, computers, or tablets, checking emails insistently and seeing who’s posted what on social media sites. We see it in the frazzled looks of other drivers as they multitask with their phones at the stoplight, sipping a supercharged latte and gorging on the lunch that, in most countries is savored. Lunches in Italy take 1-2 hours and it is a complete sacrilege to even dare to eat or drink while driving, much less walking. When I was in Rome my body slowed down, emails waited, calls were postponed to a block of time and my family was savored. Ahh! They work to live instead of us who live to work.
Every moment does not have to be captured immediately, retouched, given the most appropriate caption, and posted on Instagram or FB. Your memory and a journal will do that. The crowd at home can wait to hear first hand how the trip was. This syndrome is all over the place. Forgetfulness, stress, and anxiety are running rampant -- especially here in the land of milk and honey. So what’s the cure? Well, let’s see… Big Pharma has a solution… pop another pill. Now mind you I have nothing against popping a prescribed pill or two, like when my body’s chemistry is completely out of whack from years of constant fight or flight response (see my posts on our family’s PTSD journey) or I am in severe pain, like when I broke my ankle. But it wasn’t and isn’t my go to cure all. Big Pharma is already looking to find a drug to minimize forgetfulness and maximize memory; it will be hailed as the cure for BLS. The drug will not cure us, of course, it will maintain the status as a chronic condition. The drug will have multiple side effects. Like most other drugs on the market today, you’ll be watching the ad on TV and you’ll see the girl skipping down a lane and focusing intently on her blissful life all while some drone reads aloud each and every complication they found in trials. What if there’s another answer to the syndrome? What if we can do one thing that changes everything?
I’m pretty sure that although they work long, hard hours, they won’t end up with this God forsaken syndrome. There were so many times that I walked down a little cobblestone side street only to find another extraordinary piazza. So many times I sat in complete silence and enjoyed doing nothing. I didn’t think about what next crisis would be covered on TV. I didn’t long for the incessant hum of electronics; I sat, drank, ate, savored. I watched the pigeons peck at the gaps in the cobblestones, lovers canoodle on benches, and grandmothers and grandfathers holding their grandchildren’s hands patiently explaining the quirky questions posed. You know the ones: What are the clouds in the sky? Why does the moon come out? How many flowers are in this park? I just sat. 20

And what if that one thing is meditation? The Benefits of Meditation The Dalai Lama is frequently quoted about the value of meditation. In fact, he believes it is critical to health and wellbeing. I totally agree. The quote in the story goes something like this, “How are you able to fit in daily meditation with such a busy schedule?” The Dalai Lama smiled and replied that on normal days, he meditates for one hour in the morning. He then smiled even bigger and said that on extremely busy days, he meditates for two hours in the morning.
Out of that one step of meditation came being fully present in everything we do (even doing the laundry can be a Zen meditation -- trust me I know), being mindful about our thoughts, actions, and words (most of us get two out of three… sometimes), and shifting our mindset about ourselves and others through movement. Wash, rinse, and repeat. What meditating did while I was in pain both mentally and physically was calm my body, mind, and soul. What meditating did was create the foundation for this newfound life of presence. Do I still get frustrated? Sure. I’m not an avatar but what I have noticed is that I can process it much faster and with more compassion. I can observe myself in the situation. My ability to slow down and smell the roses, listen to the birds, and tune in to my children, guides, and to my Higher Self is much more apparent. Multitasking is not our friend, taking one task at a time through prioritizing is. Enjoying life and experiencing all that life has to offer with consciousness is. Getting rid of inane actions is also a friend, and yes, that means turning off the TV programming that keeps us in a drone state. Is that why it’s called programming? Giving ourselves the gift of time to rest, relax, and pamper ourselves is also a dear friend and luxury we can afford. My son has a t-shirt that says: Namast’ay in bed. This t-shirt says it all. You Are What You Eat: The Truth Behind Metabolic Syndrome By Craig T. Fasullo, ND
T
here is nothing short of an epidemic silently sweeping the United States. According to the American Medical Association, 34% (more than one in three) adults now fits the criteria for the condition known as Metabolic Syndrome, which vastly increases risk of both cardiovascular disease and diabetes. For adults over the age of 50, the rate is 44% - nearly one in two. Despite the high incidence of this condition, it is not infectious in nature. You can’t catch it from your neighbor, and you can’t pass it along to your children. Nor is it something that can be simply treated with an antibiotic or other drugs. Taking many years to develop, the best news is that the treatment (and prevention) of this condition is entirely within your control, in accordance with many actions and decisions made on a daily basis. Here we will discuss what this ailment is, how it may affect you, the latest research regarding treatment and prevention, and how you can work with your doctor to avoid it. In 1940, nutritionist Victor Lindlahr published a book entitled You Are What You Eat, describing how to achieve and maintain health with diet, the connection between the foods put in one’s body, and overall health. Interestingly, Victor was the son of Dr. Henry Lindlahr, a physician who is considered to be the founder of naturopathy in the United States, bringing the study and application of “Nature Cure” from Germany. As you will see, in no aspect of health is the expression, “you are what you eat” more applicable than in Metabolic Syndrome. Regular exercise and activity, proper sleep, and adequate stress coping mechanisms are vitally important in the management of this condition. Metabolic Syndrome So what exactly is Metabolic Syndrome? It is the specific collection of a number of medical conditions - raised blood pressure, elevated levels of blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Each of these conditions brings particular health hazards, but when they are all present there is significant risk of developing more severe medical issues, including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and even neurologic and rheumatologic conditions. According to the American Heart Association, the exact guidelines for Metabolic Syndrome are as follows: • Elevated waist circumference: • Men — greater than 40 inches • Women — greater than 35 inches • Elevated triglycerides: greater than 150 mg/dL • Reduced HDL cholesterol:
22
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
• Men — less than 40 mg/dL • Women — less than 50 mg/dL • Elevated blood pressure: above 130/85 mm Hg (or use of medication for hypertension) • Elevated fasting glucose: above 100 mg/dL (or use of medication for hyperglycemia) Since testing is required, it is necessary to see your doctor to determine whether or not you fit the criteria for Metabolic Syndrome. Whether you fit all these parameters or just a few of them, it is in your best interest to consider some positive changes that will reduce your risk and possibly eliminate the condition all together. As previously stated, most all of the factors that contribute to Metabolic Syndrome are directly related to lifestyle, diet, and activity. This means that avoiding this condition is entirely in your control! Anyone interested in taking their health into their own hands has all the power to avoid Metabolic Syndrome. Of course, prevention is always easier than treatment, but if you do already fit the criteria, know that you can often reverse the process by making these same changes and sticking to them. Perhaps the most important component related to risk for Metabolic Syndrome is diet. Remember, you are what you eat! Many experts suggest that the significant increase in Metabolic Syndrome in recent years has much to do with the rising American addiction to refined carbohydrates. This trend can be traced back to the vast promotion of the low fat diet, beginning in the 1960s and taking strong root by the 1980s. We were told that intake of fat, especially saturated fat, is bad and should be significantly curtailed to reduce risk of heart attack and stroke. Low fat and nonfat foods began to line the grocery store shelves. The trouble is, over this same period of time, obesity in America has gotten out of control. Currently, 35% of American adults are obese and a staggering 68% are overweight. This is not a genetic condition, and yet rates among children are 16% obese and 31% overweight. One major reason for this is that when fat went out the window, it was overwhelmingly replaced with refined sugars and carbohydrates. When these are combined with sedentary behavior (not enough activity or exercise), they lead to increased weight gain. We are passing our bad habits on to our children, and the full extents of the consequences are unclear. Let’s talk details of prevention and treatment by examining some of the latest research in Metabolic Syndrome. Specifically, we’ll look at how Metabolic Syndrome relates to diet, exercise, sleep, and overall stress management.
Diet Beyond reducing dietary carbohydrates and sugars, there is exciting research regarding the role of a healthy gut microbiome in regards to Metabolic Syndrome. What we are talking about here is probiotics! Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis are doing cutting edge work in this field. Perhaps the most fascinating information from the past few years is a study that compared the gut microbiome of obese vs. lean mice. With no other changes in diet or activity, lean mice were made to gain weight and show molecular changes consistent with Metabolic Syndrome simply by transferring the bacteria from obese mice into their own guts. In addition, studies in humans have shown a relationship between low diversity of gastrointestinal (GI) bacteria species and increased rates of both obesity and Metabolic Syndrome. What does this mean for you? Optimally, every individual should include an array of fermented foods into their diet. This might include yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kombucha, miso, tempeh, and many others. If you aren’t eating these regularly, consider a broad-spectrum probiotic supplement. We must also consider the role of antibiotic treatment in the alteration of the gut microbiome. Numerous studies have linked repeated exposure to antibiotics in the first two years of life to an increased propensity of obesity in early childhood. The exact mechanism is not clear, but given all we know about GI bacteria, this is likely a significant factor. Overweight children all too often become overweight adults, leading to increased risk for Metabolic Syndrome. Very recent research also suggests a link between frequent antibiotic use in adults and development of type II diabetes up to 15 years later. Certainly antibiotics are a lifesaving medicine, but doctors and patients, should look to more judicious use of these therapies in light of better-understood risks that may be associated with them. In one more piece of dietary information, it’s no surprise to anyone that soda isn’t particularly good for you. Recent research shows that individuals who consume at least one soft drink per day have a higher incidence of Metabolic Syndrome. Even more interestingly, those who drank diet soda had an even higher prevalence compared to those who drank regular soda. Diet soda drinkers had larger waistlines and higher levels of fasting blood sugar. So while all that sugar isn’t very healthy, the artificial sugar is even worse.
Exercise and Activity So how about exercise? Certainly an individual’s level of regular activity is related to Metabolic Syndrome, and this is reflected in the literature. On the most basic of levels, we are creatures intended for physical activity. Our modern culture makes it all too easy to lead remarkably sedentary lives, moving only from home to car to office with the occasional expedition to the shopping mall or grocery store. There are numerous studies correlating this low level of activity with increased weight gain and rise of Metabolic Syndrome, but no one really needs a study to point out this obvious fact. More interesting is the data regarding what types of activity might be best. Indeed, some activity is better than no activity at all. In this regard, it doesn’t really matter what it is. I tell my patients trying to introduce the first bit of exercise into their lives that the best kind is whatever you enjoy the most. This will maintain motivation and keep you moving! There are so many options beyond just going to the gym. If the thought of “exercise” makes you wince, consider ways to sneak extra movement into your daily routine - from using the stairs, to parking on the far side of the grocery store parking lot, or even walking or bicycling. For those looking to be more aggressive about exercise, the latest research suggests that a combination of cardiovascular activity, strength/resistance training, and interval training leads in the greatest reduction of symptoms correlated to Metabolic Syndrome. Certainly many individuals need to incorporate more heart healthy cardiovascular exercise into their regular routines, but it might surprise you to know that strength training also has dramatic positive effects on Metabolic Syndrome, including reducing blood glucose levels and overall insulin sensitivity, as well as improving cholesterol ratios. High intensity interval training (HIT) has been shown to make for the most dramatic improvement, but you should speak to your physician to ensure cardiovascular stability prior to engaging in such vigorous activity. Sleep Everyone knows the importance of a good night’s sleep, but how about its effect beyond simply feeling rested in the morning? A number of recent studies have specifically looked at the importance of adequate sleep and its relationship to a number of components of Metabolic Syndrome. One such study shows that short sleep duration was associated with excess body mass among both adolescents and young adults. In another,
individuals who slept less than five hours per night were 88% more likely to suffer from abdominal obesity than those who slept seven to eight hours. With increased body mass comes increased risk of sleep apnea, and numerous studies link sleep apnea to higher incidence of both elevated blood pressure and diabetes. Indeed, when considered all together, insomnia and insufficient sleep has been shown to be an independent predictor of Metabolic Syndrome, entirely distinct from patterns of diet and exercise. Stress How about stress? Research in the past number of years has elucidated a connection between elevated psychological stress and a vast array of medical conditions, from irritable bowel syndrome to asthma to headaches. Recent data suggests that stress also has a direct impact on Metabolic Syndrome. Individuals that reported more frequent stressful life events had significantly increased risk for developing Metabolic Syndrome in the 6.5 year follow up period. Along a similar vein, Metabolic Syndrome was shown to be highly prevalent among those people with a history of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Higher reported levels of anxiety were also shown to increase risk.

As the risk factors for developing Metabolic Syndrome can begin to develop in childhood, an interesting study of adolescents showed lower risk of developing these symptoms among those children with more positive emotions and attitudes, including increased optimism and higher self-esteem. It’s nice to have some scientific evidence showing that a positive outlook on life is positively healthy! Of course, we understand that stress is a ubiquitous part of life. In that regard, it is perhaps more helpful to talk about stress management. There are many resources available for those who are interested in delving deeper into this issue. One of the more interesting ones is a free online course available through University of California - Berkeley, entitled The Science of Happiness, which explores the field of positive psychology, exploring “the roots of a happy and meaningful life.” Take Control! The important take-home message here is that whether you already have the constellation of symptoms that constitutes Metabolic Syndrome, you are moving in that direction, or you want to take early steps to prevent it in the future, each and every individual has the power and the tools necessary to improve their health. It is vital to work alongside a wellversed physician in order to regularly monitor lab values and design a treatment protocol that is individualized for you. Fortunately, despite being so prevalent, Metabolic Syndrome is entirely preventable and treatable. I encourage everyone to make a step toward taking control of your health today! Signs That You Are Not Following Your Destiny By Diane Hayden, PhD
O
ne day last summer I woke up in the middle of the night with my heart racing and skipping beats. I thought I might seriously be having a heart attack. That only made matters worse as my anxiety increased along with my heart rate. Most people probably would’ve called an ambulance, but I tried to think rationally about whether or not I really needed medical attention and my intuition told me no. So, I spent the remainder of the night just trying to breathe, relax and work through it. I finally was able to fall asleep and I woke up with a normal heart rhythm. It would be nice if the story ended there. Unfortunately, over the next 6 months I experienced this abnormal rhythm pretty much on a daily basis. I finally went to specialists, had all kinds of tests, and was told – “nothing is wrong, you have what’s called benign PVC – we don’t really know what causes it, but it’s not life threatening.” Great, I thought, I just have to live with this now? Yup. If you’ve never experienced it, PVCs or premature ventricular contractions can make you feel light-headed, breathless, tired, and anxious. Plus, it’s kind of a distraction when you feel your heart skip a beat, beat 2-3 times quickly in a row or just beat erratically. It took me awhile to “get used to it” and countless hours of research to understand that I really wasn’t going to have a heart attack. But what I really wanted to know was WHY this was happening to me. And that answer couldn’t be found in a medical journal or website. I believe that physical symptoms manifest only after you’ve been having an emotional or spiritual problem that you haven’t addressed. So I started reading books on medical intuition – low and behold, the place or organ in your body where you’re experiencing the symptom is closely related to the kind of issue you’re having. Heart complications are related to love and fulfillment issues in your life. That didn’t make any sense to me. I had a business I loved that was successful, a great relationship, good friends and family, and a fun, happy life. But did I? Sure I was stressed out – my business partner and I were having conflicts, my financial situation wasn’t where I wanted it to be, my boyfriend was selling his house and we had 3 weeks to put the entire contents of a 3500 square foot house in storage before we left on a 2-month cross country trip, oh and on top of that we were living with his parents for a month – of course I’m stressed out. It must just be anxiety from all that stress. But I’ve had major stress before that didn’t cause any heart issues. In my late twenties, my father passed away, I had to break off an engagement, and I had to defend my doctoral dissertation twice due to a problem with the statistics, and all of that didn’t create an irregular heart rate. In my early forties, I started a business with my husband at the time, got divorced a few years later, continued to work with him as a business partner, struggled financially to get the business off the ground and maintain two households, and all of that didn’t create any heart issues. Something was very different.
I started to really think about my life. Did I jump out of bed each morning excited to work? No. Was I challenged and motivated each day in my business? No. Was I financially satisfied with what I was earning from the business? No. Did I see my family and friends enough and spend quality, fun time with them? No. Did I focus on my spirituality and personal growth? No. But I have so much more than the average person – who am I to want more? Some people would kill for the opportunities I have. Isn’t what I have enough? Yes. Or so I thought until my heart literally started telling me it wasn’t enough. And if I didn’t make some changes, according to many medical intuitives, the symptoms would get worse…much worse. That was not something I wanted to experience. I started thinking about what the initial signs were that I should have paid attention to and that hopefully can help anyone reading this to notice and do something about before any physical symptoms manifest. 1. You’re bored or unchallenged. This could be in your career, relationship or any area of your life that is important to you. When you’re doing things that don’t align with your purpose or destiny, the first sign you’ll notice is boredom. You don’t awake each day with vigor ready to jump into work at your job or business. 2. You’re suffering from analysis paralysis. Do you ever feel like you just don’t have any options? Do you find a reason why any new idea you have just won’t work? We all suffer from this at times in our lives. I’ve spent more hours than I want to admit thinking about all the reasons why I shouldn’t do this or shouldn’t do that to change my situation. I could analyze it for hours. It’s all about fear. 3. You’re having anxiety attacks. When your body starts to manifest physical symptoms, it’s really time to pay attention. This is a serious message that you aren’t aligned with your passion and destiny and it’s time to do something about that now. 4. You feel frustrated and resentful. I started getting really angry when I would see other people posting on Facebook about how successful their business was, how exciting their life was and just generally how happy and grateful they were. I needed to ask myself in that moment, what was triggering this deep emotion. 5. Your gut is telling you that something is wrong. The problem is most of us don’t listen to our intuition. We get these hits of clarity, we “hear” the message in our head, we “feel” that something needs to change…and we promptly dismiss all of it. We have it all – how could anything be wrong? Begin to create an action plan to step into a life you truly love. Listen to your body. Give yourself time to relax and recharge. Enjoy the journey. And follow your path to living your destiny. Does Your Brain Need a Detox from Overstimulation?
By Summer McAllister, ND
D
o you ever forget why you went downstairs? Or have gone into a room and left because you could not remember why you went in? Do you say, “It’s just on the tip of my tongue,” but can’t find the words? Do names just fly out of your head as soon as you hear them? Are people telling you something and you miss the whole conversation? Do you often search around the parking lot looking for your car? Busy Lifestyle Syndrome (BLS) was first described by researchers in Glasgow, who labelled the condition saying, “forgetfulness can be caused by a hectic lifestyle and constantly being bombarded with information from mobile phones, blackberries, television, radio and the internet.” As we age, it is normal to begin forgetting certain things, but people afflicted with BLS begin to have trouble remembering daily tasks at an earlier age. The “information overload” exacerbates this decline in memory. This kind of memory loss is not to be confused with Alzheimer’s or early dementia. Busy Lifestyle Syndrome is caused by daily overload of stimuli. The human brain purges meaningless information to make room for more important material; it’s a priority system. When overloaded, the brain knows you don’t need to remember everyday or mundane information, and makes room for the more significant information by eliminating it. If our brains did not clear the mental clutter, we would be continuously remembering meaningless facts and have no room for processing important things. The problem is most noticeable when performing daily functions. The more overloaded we are, the more our brains are erasing. Sleep is the most important factor in how much we forget. Sleep deprivation, or less than 6 hours of quality sleep, is a key in determining the amount of forgotten information. Most people have some amount of forgetfulness, but when it starts to impact your day, it’s time to seek help. The Impact of Social Media Every day millions of Americans spend countless hours on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. When we are searching through our friends’ posts, we are immersed in a surplus of information. Most of the information that our brain experiences from these sites is stimulating, but useless, and we become addicted. Unfortunately, this massive stimulation causes the brain to erase important 26

information that is valuable in our day to day life. Our body works in balance, needing periods of stimulation and relaxation. The brain needs periods of time without stimulus to recharge and store information. It’s necessary to unplug and disconnect from this type of media, even for five minutes each hour. Instead of reading about your neighbor checking in at the dentist, or new flavors of cat treats available at the local pet store, spend a few minutes with the phone in your pocket. Consider spending more time doing activities that do not involve excess stimulation like meditation, deep breathing, or simply taking a walk. When we give our brain the relaxation it requires, we are able to recall information more easily, specifically things we don’t want to forget. It is recommended that you take an entire week off from social media to detox the brain. Improve Your Sleep Having healthy and consistent sleeping habits is the easiest way to increase and sustain your energy and reduce your chance of having problems associated with Busy Lifestyle Syndrome. However, sleep doesn’t always come easily. Here are some simple methods for improving your ability to fall asleep and the quality of your sleep: 1. The Perfect Environment for Sleep Try sleeping in complete darkness by covering or removing the lights from digital alarm clocks, TVs and other electrical devices. Bright lights can disrupt the production of important hormones for sound sleep. 2. Bedtime Calls As when we were children, an appropriate bedtime is critical to your health. Getting to bed by 11:00 PM is essential for our adrenal glands to recharge, recover, and build our reserves of energy for the next day. In addition, sleeping 7.5 to 9 hours a night will allow your body to restore itself. 3. An Active Mind is an Un-rested Mind Like your body, your mind craves rest after a long day of work. It is important to let your mind have a break too. Make a habit of relaxing for at least 30 minutes before getting into bed. During your relaxation period, avoid watching TV, as it is mentally stimulating. Instead, try listening to soft music, mediating, or catching up on some light reading. Taking Epsom salt baths help to reduce the mental clutter of the day and allow deep relaxation before sleep.
Testing When suffering from Busy Lifestyle Syndrome or frequent forgetfulness, it is very important to make sure that you have proper testing. This is needed to rule out any serious memory conditions, such as early Alzheimer’s or dementia. It’s recommended to see your holistic practitioner for a complete workup. Holistic practitioners try to find the root cause of the problem and support the body back to balance. Everyone needs individualized treatment to find the particular cause for forgetting information quickly. Anemia Brain cells require oxygen and proper blood flow to perform functions. Oxygen is delivered to each cell through the hemoglobin. The essential nutrients for hemoglobin are iron, folate and cobalamine (B12). Anemia is a lack of or poor functioning hemoglobin, which will immediately affect the ability to recall any information. Iron is an essential metal that is required for the delivery of oxygen, but excess iron can be very damaging to the body, so be sure to have your iron level tested before trying to increase it. Some individuals have a genetic predisposition that requires supplementation of key nutrients. Without those nutrients, many people suffer from diminished cognitive thinking. Support Brain Repair Repairing the brain is another major factor in the body’s ability to deal with bombarding stimuli. Fatty acids, or omega fatty acids are essential building blocks for the cell membrane of brain cells. These provide permeability to the cell so it can exchange information in the synapse, the basic form of communication between all cells in the brain. The brain uses chemical signals or neurotransmitters to communicate from cell to cell. Having plenty of omega fatty acids provides healthy communication within our brains and increased cognitive health. Key Nutrients and Herbs • Antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, Selenium and Alpha-lipoic acid, protect brain cells from damaging free radicals. • Flavonoids, which repair the damage that occurs in the brain, are found in plants like blueberries, apples, spinach, citrus fruits, black and green tea, and cocoa. • Vitamin D is responsible for the growth and production of certain proteins that activate neurotransmitters and improve synaptic communication. • Phosphatidylserine (PS) is the fatty protein in brain cells that facilitate communication. Increasing the amount of PS supports memory. • Vinpocetine helps protect brain cells from damage, in addition to enhancing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain. Adrenal Health Specialized testing may be recommended for hormonal balancing, including checking for thyroid and adrenal function. Adrenals are responsible for handling stress and BLS is all about how your brain and body handles stress. When the amount of stress is not balanced with the amount of Cortisol produced, you are suffering from adrenal dysfunction. This increase in adrenal stress can lead to BLS type symptoms. Supporting adrenal gland functions will help you better manage stress and the effects of BLS.
Nutrients Responsible for Supporting Adrenal Functions: • B Vitamins are the most important vitamin when dealing with the adrenal glands. It is the co-factor that is responsible for the production of Cortisol. • Rodidola increases your resistance to stress. It has a long history of improving fatigue, poor attention span, and decreased memory. • Ashwaganda improves learning, memory, and reaction time while helping to fight the effects of stress. • Siberian Ginseng is used to improve stamina, help with fatigue and increase the ability to handle all forms of stress. In Summary To find your car in the parking lot, remember why you came downstairs and recall the name of that person who stopped you in the grocery store, it is important to reduce the amount of overwhelming information your brain processes. Remember to do the following: • Do a media detox (or at least reduce the amount of media each day) • Improve your quality of sleep • Give the brain the nutrients it needs • Support your adrenal health You can help your Busy Lifestyle Syndrome by making these changes to improve your health. Controversies in Breast Cancer Screening By Amanda Swan, APRN s October comes to a close, so too does Breast Cancer Awareness Month – 31 days devoted to raising public awareness and funding to combat one of America’s most dreaded diseases. Most Americans have a close friend or family member who has battled breast cancer. Angelina Jolie is quoted in her 2013 Op-Ed piece for the New York Times as saying that the word cancer “strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness.” For those with experience with this disease, these words ring very true.
A
According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 231,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2015, and an additional 60,000 will be diagnosed with early, noninvasive disease (carcinoma in situ). Forty thousand will die from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for American women. Fortunately, breast cancer deaths have declined in the past 15 years, likely due to improved treatment, increased awareness, and early detection. The Pink Movement While few can deny the importance of breast cancer awareness, critics of the “pink movement” do exist. Some argue that efforts should be directed at campaigns for healthier lifestyles to prevent breast cancer. Others criticize that companies exploit Breast Cancer Awareness Month to promote their products, when in fact their products may be unhealthy and increase breast cancer risk. Critics of breast cancer screening programs also exist, and mammography guidelines have been hotly debated in recent years. Historically, mammography has been the gold standard for the detection of abnormal breast lesions. Current guidelines differ between groups, but most American medical associations are in favor of routine mammography as first line screening for women who are not at high risk for breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), is an independent consortium of national experts in preventive medicine that publishes evidence-based guidelines on screening and prevention measures in order to improve the health of our country. Currently, the USPSTF is revising its breast cancer screening guidelines. A draft of updated guidelines recommends biennial (every 2 years) mammography for women ages 50-74 years. For women ages 4049, the USPSTF suggests that the decision to start screening should be an individual one, because the risk of breast cancer death in this age group is lower than in older women. The American College of 28
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
Physicians agrees that screening mammography decisions for women between 40-49 should be individualized based on a woman’s preference and risk factors. In contrast, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), one of the most widely respected organizations in women’s health in the US, recommend yearly mammography starting at age 40, as does the American Cancer Society and the American College of Radiology and the Society for Breast Imaging. These differing recommendations are confusing for patients and healthcare providers alike. Critics of breast cancer screening programs have begun to publish their opinions and data in respected medical journals, and have been met with harsh pushback. An independent, nationally appointed medical board in Switzerland recently announced their position that mammography should be stopped because its harms outweigh its benefits. In September of this year, a Danish physician from a highly respected European research team boldly stated that “mammography is harmful and should be eliminated” and that “if screening had been a drug, it would have been withdrawn from the market long ago.” So what are the roots of such controversy? A look at the risks and benefits of mammography may help to shed light on this complicated and important debate. Benefits of Mammography Evidence suggests that screening mammography does decrease breast cancer mortality, (the number of women who die from the disease). Randomized trials have found an estimated 20% reduction in breast cancer mortality when comparing women who have undergone routine screening mammography to those who have not. Gotzsche argues that such statistics are based on old studies that were done prior to the advances in breast cancer treatments that we have currently and suggests that studies done today would further decrease any reduction in mortality from routine mammography. Early detection of breast cancers is associated with much higher survival rates, and mammography is a relatively low-cost tool for structural breast assessment and evaluation compared to other imaging tests, and can often detect small tumors at early stages. In the developing world, mammography is widely available in hospitals, radiology centers, and even on mobile vans. Improving access to mammography for underserved women is a priority of many public health initiatives because some underserved groups
such as African American women are at increased risk for breast cancer death compared to other ethnic groups. Harms of Mammography Despite its benefits, mammography carries certain risks. The most important risk of routine mammography in low risk women is “overdiagnosis”, or the diagnosis and treatment of disease which, if left alone, would not have been a threat to a woman’s health. Studies suggest that 20-30% of breast cancers are overdiagnosed and up to half of noninvasive carcinomas in situ may have resolved without any intervention. Because it is not possible to determine which noninvasive cancer will progress to advanced disease, the current standard of care is to treat these cancers as if they were going to progress. Treatment may include lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiation therapy, or hormone therapy, all of which carry inherent risks. False positive findings are another potential “harm” of mammography. Many women receive news of an abnormal finding on a routine mammogram and undergo additional imaging, or perhaps a biopsy, to rule out cancer. More often than not, these findings are benign, but the weeks to months of waiting and wondering while tests are being run can have a harmful impact on the psychological wellbeing of a woman and her family. After 10 mammograms, the risk of receiving a false positive result is between 20-60%. Similarly, false negative results may occur as a result of mammography. This means that a woman is told that her mammogram is “normal” when in fact a small cancer has been missed. This may provide a false sense of security and contribute to continuation of behaviors that increase the risk for breast cancer such as unhealthy eating habits, smoking, and lack of exercise. Many women are concerned about radiation exposure from regular mammography. We are exposed to background radiation on a daily basis just from living and interacting on earth. One bilateral mammogram with 2 views of each breast delivers a radiation dose equivalent to that of 7 weeks of normal daily living exposure. For some women, this dose seems small and insignificant. For others, it is beyond their comfort level and undesired, especially when added up over 2-3 decades of screening. Radiation-induced breast cancers do exist and the contribution of radiation from mammography is unclear.
For Gotzche, the culmination of these risks poses a threat to women’s health which outweighs any benefit that mammography might provide. A mammography leaflet describing his findings and recommendations is available at www.cochrane.dk. H. Gilbert Welch, a Dartmouth physician and researcher shares many of Gotzche’s views about mammography and has written about them in his book “Overdiagnosed: Making People Sick in the Pursuit of Health.” So where do we go from here? Alternatives and complements to mammography do exist, although few have been studied thoroughly enough to enable recommendations for routine use. Alternatives to Mammography 3-D mammography, or tomosynthesis, takes a three-dimensional picture of the breast (traditional mammography is 2-D) which allows for greater detail and accuracy. 3-D mammography may identify lesions that would have been missed with traditional mammograms alone, thus reducing the risk of false negatives. Currently 3-D mammography is available at various health centers in CT and is done alongside traditional mammograms. Breast thermography, or digital infrared imaging, is based on the concept that heat is produced from increased circulation and metabolic changes associated with tumor growth. Thermography may detect thermal signs of early changes that are too small to be found on mammograms or even MRIs. For now, thermography is being used as a complement to mammography and private thermography centers exist in Connecticut. Experimental breast imaging tests are being researched, and include optical imaging tests, molecular breast imaging, and positron emission mammography. Clearly, the mammogram debate is complicated. There is no doubt that further studies are needed in order to find the best screening tool for breast cancer. In the meantime, routine mammography will remain the gold standard for early detection of breast cancers in the United States. Being an informed healthcare consumer is a powerful tool. Discussing current guidelines and controversies with your healthcare provider can help you to make the best decision possible for your health, given your unique history. In addition, it can strengthen the patientprovider relationship to form a more unified team working together to solve life’s health challenges.

Curcumin From Turmeric: Great Potential for Multiple Conditions, Part 2 By Michael Dworkin, PD, CCN & J. Erika Dworkin Curcumin has a surprisingly wide range of beneficial properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity....[It] is remarkably non-toxic, … exhibits great promise as a therapeutic agent, and is currently in human clinical trials for a variety of conditions, including multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer, myelodysplastic syndromes, colon cancer, psoriasis and Alzheimer’s disease. - Cell Mol Life Sci. 2008 Jun; 65(11):1631-52

urcumin is the active ingredient in the traditional herbal remedy and dietary spice turmeric (Curcuma longa). Part 1 of this two-part article, in the October issue, discussed how curcumin provides multiple therapeutic benefits, available drug delivery systems of dietary supplements that enhance its absorption, and the science supporting its dietary supplementation in connection with Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Discussion of additional compelling scientific evidence continues below. Research-Based Therapeutic Application Studies have shown that curcumin has therapeutic application against inflammation, demonstrating greater anti-inflammatory activity than ibuprofen by inhibiting pro-inflammatory prostaglandins or stimulating the adrenal glands to secrete cortisone, J. Graf, MD, Dept. of Dermatology, NYU Medical Center, New York. Curcumin also aids in areas such as infection, lifestyle-related disease, and neurological disorders. Researchers have thus examined it as a target against a wide variety of diseases, some of which are discussed below. Depression According to the National Institute of Mental Health, there are multiple forms of depression, a common but serious brain disorder that affects 1 in 10 Americans. These include: (1) Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) – characterized by severe symptoms that interfere with the ability to work, sleep, study, eat, and enjoy life; only one or multiple episodes can occur in a lifetime; (2) Postpartum Depression - after giving birth, hormonal and physical changes, and the new responsibility of caring for a newborn, becomes overwhelming (estimated to occur in 10-15% of new mothers); and (3) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) - characterized by the onset of depression during the winter months, when there is less natural sunlight; nearly 50% of those with SAD do not improve with light therapy alone. Depression signs and symptoms include: persistent sadness, 30

anxiousness, or emptiness, hopelessness, guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness, fatigue, loss of enthusiasm for usual interests, sleep disorders, appetite shifts, and concentration or memory difficulties. In a recent randomized and controlled observer-masked human study of 60 patients with MDD, researchers administered Prozac (20 mg) or BCM-95 curcumin (1000 mg in two divided doses) (see Part 1 for explanation of well-absorbed BCM-95) individually or in combination. This provides the “first clinical evidence” that curcumin may be an effective and safe MDD treatment, without the side effects that often accompany drug therapy (Phytother Res. 2014 Apr). BCM-95 curcumin combats depression by inhibiting inflammation, promoting neurogenesis, and increasing serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine levels. Obesity and Diabetes According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), America has the largest population of obese people in the world (http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/index.html). Extensive research over the past two decades has revealed that obesity is a pro-inflammatory disease and thus a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer, other chronic diseases (Annu Rev Nutr. 2010 Aug), and death (10–50% increased risk of death from natural causes due to obesity-induced cardiovascular disease) (Eur J Nutr 2011 Mar). The Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas secrete the hormone insulin, which regulates glucose, the sugar the body uses for energy. Type 2 diabetes is marked by elevated blood glucose levels resulting from either the inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas or the cells’ inability to use insulin (the more common cause, called insulin resistance/insensitivity). Insulin resistance is also a component of what Gerald Reaven, M.D., a Stanford University researcher, labeled Syndrome X (now called Metabolic Syndrome), a cluster of disorders including obesity, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and/or increased risk of heart disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, normal fasting blood glucose is below 100 mg/dl. Someone who is pre-diabetic has a fasting blood sugar level of 100-125 mg/dl, while a diabetic has a blood glucose level over 125 mg/dl. Curcumin reduces inflammation and activates cell-signaling pathways when directly interacting with pancreatic, liver, immune (macrophages), fat, and muscle cells. These curcumin-induced body alterations reverse insulin resistance, high blood sugar, high choles-
terol/triglycerides, and other symptoms linked to obesity (Annu Rev Nutr. 2010 Aug) (also see Endocrinology. 2008 Jul – mouse study). In one review of curcumin studies from 2000-2010, researchers concluded that, “the relatively low cost of curcumin, safety and proven efficacy make it advisable to include curcumin as part of [a] healthy diet” (Eur J Nutr 2011 Mar). Digestive Diseases (IBD/IBS, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis) The University of Maryland Medical Center (https://umm. edu/health/medical/altmed/herb/turmeric-June 2014) reports that curcumin may help: (1) Indigestion/Dyspepsia – by stimulating the gallbladder to produce bile; and (2) Ulcerative Colitis (a form of Irritable Bowel Disease) – may help UC stay in remission.

In the World Journal of Gastroenterology (World J Gastroenterol. 2013 Dec), researchers reported that a form of curcumin bound to lecithin phospholipids (Meriva®) markedly improves intestinal absorption of curcumin (29 times), guarantees a greater tissue delivery than traditional curcuminoid mixtures, and thus “has the potential to be exploited in many gastrointestinal diseases.” Kidney (Renal) Disease The kidneys are fist-sized, bean-shaped organs located near the middle of the back, just below the rib cage. As sophisticated trash collectors, they process about 200 quarts of blood daily to sift out about two quarts of waste and extra water. Normal kidneys also produce hormones, chemical messengers that circulate in the bloodstream and regulate various body functions including blood pressure, red blood cell production, and the uptake of calcium from the intestine. Researchers have examined curcumin’s ability to protect the kidneys in cases of diabetic nephropathy (Scand J Urol Nephrol. 2011 Nov - 500mg turmeric capsule, each containing 22.1mg curcumin, taken with each meal), chronic renal failure, ischemia and reperfusion (tissue damage following the return of blood supply after a period of oxygen deprivation), and nephrotoxicity induced by various compounds. Recent studies indicate that curcumin has promising reno-protective effects due to its antioxidant and antiinflammatory capacity, and the ability to inhibit mitochondrial dysfunction (Redox Biol. 2013). Psoriasis Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory, autoimmune skin disease characterized by thick, red, scaly lesions that may appear on any part of the body. Plaque psoriasis is the most common of its five forms, and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk (AAPS J. 2013 Jan). One two-stage clinical trial examined the safety and efficacy of oral curcumin in patients with moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis (J Am Acad Dermatol. 2008). Twelve patients were given 4.5g curcumin capsules every day for 12 weeks, followed by a 4-week observation period. The response rate was low, but the curcumin treatment was well-tolerated and two patients showed 8388% improvement after 12 weeks (see Br J Dermatol. 2000 Nov). Conclusion While curcumin can be used safely in preventive and healing regimens, it is best to seek the advice of an expert in nutrition or functional medicine when attempting to change the course of disease. Since nutritional supplements can interact with prescription drugs, advise your doctor of your desire to incorporate comple-

Are You Ready to Kiss Your
Goodbye? By Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, PhD, PT, IMT, C

here are many different kinds of headaches. Tension headaches, which are the most common form, involve a constant pressure feeling around the head. Cluster headaches occur in cycles — they can be severe in an area of the head. Sinus headaches occur with inflamed sinuses, particularly from an infection and can be accompanied with a fever. Migraines are often considered the worst type of headache because of the level of pain intensity that is involved. These are just a few of the myriad ways that our head can hurt. Available treatment varies as well, ranging from over-the-counter medication such as aspirin or Tylenol, and prescription medicine, to antibiotics if the headache is related to a sinus infection. Alternative treatments include options like acupuncture and massage to help release tension in the head. In fact, there are many approaches that are focused on reducing headaches. Stress Let’s take a step back and consider some potential underlying factors. Research indicates that headaches can be related to stress, something that we all experience. It would be impossible to be free from stress entirely. So how can we go about our lives without symptoms associated from stress? Additionally, could inflammation play a part in stress and our overall immune health? When we discuss stress as a factor relating to headaches, it is helpful to consider our stress threshold. How much stress can we handle before we begin to feel symptoms? There are multiple reasons for why our stress threshold may be lower than optimal. One possibility is inflammation and reduced immune health in our body. Another possibility is postural issues specific to part of our spine being out of alignment and creating tension on our head and neck. There are many reasons why we may experience headaches on a regular basis. Let’s focus on these possibilities. Diet Based on comparing health scores and health risk scores of countries with populations of at least one million, Bloomberg Rankings lists the United States as the 33rd healthiest country in the world. This number is daunting when considering the number of Americans with diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. But how did we get to this point? The standard American diet is filled with inflammatory foods. Unfortunately, our diet is one of the unhealthiest diets in the world, comprised largely of foods that can contribute to disease and illness. For individuals suffering from regular headaches,

improving diet may be very helpful. Consider a diet of less inflammatory foods. Here are the basics: plenty of diverse vegetables, natural protein, reduced refined sugars, less grain, lots of water, and good fats such as olive oil, avocadoes, and nuts. Imagine a dinner plate — how do we choose the right portions? Here is a basic breakdown of a healthy plate: 25% natural protein, such as natural poultry, wild fish, or grass-fed beef (no more than the size of a hockey puck); 50% diverse vegetables (raw and cooked); 25% starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes or butternut squash. It is also important to eat lots of healthy fats such as olive oil, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, and avocados. In addition, drinking enough water is essential for reducing inflammation and headaches as well as improving overall health of the body. We are often dehydrated without knowing it! Drinking lots of water through the day can be the greatest panacea. Posture When considering headaches, it is important to consider our spine. We are a composite of our entire lives… our body, particularly our spine, is a reflection of this. It may be difficult to remember all the injuries we have incurred in our lives but they all can build on one another to create the body that we have today. Often, when someone experiences regular headaches, including severe migraine headaches, it is largely because of poor alignment of the spine following one or multiple injuries. One successful way of improving the health and posture of our body is with Integrative Manual Therapy or IMT. IMT is a type of gentle, hands-on bodywork performed by some physical therapists, massage therapists, occupational therapists and chiropractors that are specially trained. When the spine is out of alignment, one thought would be to mobilize it back into a normal neutral position by using traditional chiropractic or physical therapy, but this does not always work. Sometimes, there are underlying factors for why the spine is out of alignment. Consider the concept of a protective mode. When there is something in the body that is injured or weak, the body will commonly limit movement or mobility around that area purposefully so that we don’t make the injured area worse by moving. This is often the cause of why we feel locked up in our lower back. But when the body locks up to protect an area, this can cause a lot of pain. Though the lower back will often go into a protective mode, this can cause considerable neck and head symptoms. Most of our body’s movement stems from the lower back. When the lower back locks up,
movement in our entire body is limited. This limitation of movement can contribute to headaches as well as neck and upper back stiffness and pain. Integrative Manual Therapy can be very successful in identifying the underlying reasons for a locked up spine. The IMT therapist is trained to find these areas and implement gentle, hands-on techniques to improve the health of these areas by promoting circulation to the area and drainage from the region, reducing tissue tension and improving health of the injured tissues. By creating greater health in the protected area, the body requires less protection and the locked up area of the spine begins to loosen. At this point, as the spine is gently mobilized, there are more long lasting results in movement and pain, including a reduction in headaches. The idea of treating the lower back to reduce headaches may seem odd. We can consider the old children’s song, which has passed through the ages: “the neck bone’s connected to the head bone…” The body is complex and remarkable in the way that it works. In this case, the concept of a protective mode makes a lot of sense. Our bodies have a great capacity for healing. Equally, when our body is injured and we need to function, we have a great ability to compensate and protect ourselves. By improving the health of our body through diet and bodywork, we can feel better and return to a lifestyle that is unencumbered by headaches. Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends at the Lovely Abbington Green B&B Inn in Asheville
I
f you haven’t been to Asheville, North Carolina – it needs to be on your bucket list! Without a doubt it is one of my most favorite cities out of all of the places I’ve been in the U.S. A food, beer and wine lover’s delight, Asheville also has great shopping, hiking and outdoor adventure, live music, vibrant arts and culture, historic architecture and breathtaking scenery…what more could you want? I could seriously spend a lot of time in Asheville.
The interior of the B&B is beautiful with local art on display. We stayed in the St. James’s Park room which was luxurious and the bed was so comfortable, I almost didn’t want to get out of it. But I had to in order to experience the amazing shower! On an ecofriendly note, Nick is doing some wonderful things like using environmentally friendly cleaning supplies, a salt filtration water system, a no pesticide use policy and donating toiletries to the local homeless shelter.
Of all the wonderful places to stay in this lively city, we were lucky enough to get into the Abbington Green Bed and Breakfast Inn in the historic Montford neighborhood. If you get a chance to visit this area which is less than a mile from downtown Asheville, definitely check it out – you’ll find an array of uniquely styled homes and architecture. Designed in 1908 by the Biltmore Estate’s architect, Abbington Green is a colonial revival style B&B.
And while you’re there, don’t miss exploring the lovely gardens that Steve has worked so painstakingly hard on, they are simply exquisite. My favorite was the Lower Garden which was designed in 1995, and incorporates a central “wheel” pattern of radiating pea gravel paths lined with over 250 boxwoods with benches at each end point. The resulting “pie slice”-shaped beds are planted each with one primary type of plant. Hundreds of perennials and shrubs are punctuated with dwarf tree varieties. The color scheme is primarily rose and purple, except in full summer when more reds and oranges serve to attract both hummingbirds and butterflies.
Enter as strangers, leave as friends…couldn’t be a more fitting plaque to be hung over the front door. I could write pages and pages of accolades for Nick and Steve and their exceptional B&B. First, I will say that the level of professionalism, warm hospitality, care and concern and genuine interest in me as a guest was beyond anything I have ever experienced. I felt like I was staying in my best friend’s home from the minute we walked in the door. Nick’s passion for what he does is electric and it comes across so clear that he takes such pride in the home, gardens, and the delicious breakfasts he makes each morning. He will be modest and tell you that he doesn’t consider himself a chef, but I will tell you that his cooking is unbelievable! One morning we dined on the Sunshine in a Basket, puff pastry with an organic baked egg and local cherrywood smoked bacon and ginger pear bread. The next morning he offered Orange Pecan French Toast with maple sausage. The local French bread is soaked in custard overnight and baked. Local herbs are grown in the garden as well as lettuce, spinach, radish, and all sorts of berries. They offer 6 fresh and organic juices as well. In the afternoons, you’ll find homemade chocolate chip cookies and you’ll be delighted with Nick’s amazing social hour where he serves local meats and cheeses and specialty wines. Relax on one of the spacious porches or balcony while you enjoy the food and meet new friends. 34
Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2015
Probably the most amazing thing to see is Abbington Green decorated for the holidays. If you have the chance to visit Asheville for Thanksgiving or Christmas, get ready for crisp winter nights, twinkling lights, lovely candles and Nick’s amazing food! If you can bring yourself to leave this peaceful sanctuary, and you’ll probably have to in order to get some nourishment, head to downtown Asheville for some culinary delights. Coined the name “Foodtopia,” you can be pretty confident that you’ll find some amazing restaurants. One night we dined at Curate which is quite possibly my all-time favorite restaurant in the country. If you’ve never been to Spain, Cúrate will introduce you to the country’s lively tapas bar tradition of small plate dining on foods flavored with a touch of sherry, or perhaps a smoky paprika, and always the choicest olive oil. I love small plate dining because it allows you try so many different things. I learned that Cúrate literally means ‘cure yourself’ in Spanish. The owners believe in the curative effects of sharing good food and wine with family and friends because shared plates create conversation, enhancing memories and unfolding stories.
Do not miss the galician style octopus served warm with sea salt, olive oil, spanish paprika, and yukon gold potato purée; the bocadillo serrano with jamón serrano, tomato fresco, manchego cheese; the gambas al ajillo which I heard was the number one tapa in Asheville with sautéed shrimp and sliced garlic; and the ensalada deverano summer salad of compressed watermelon, heirloom cherry tomatoes, sheep cheese, and corn nuts with petite lettuces dressed in a honey sherry vinaigrette. Also keep in mind that they do source their menu seasonally, so some of these options may not be on the menu when you go. Visit http://www.curatetapasbar.com. Other places you’ll definitely want to hit are Rhubarb – a delicious farm-to-table style restaurant, White Duck Taco Shop – for just about any kind of taco you can imagine, Chestnut – another great tapas place, Lex 18 for amazing espresso martinis made with Catdaddy Moonshine – don’t ask...just try it, 5 Walnut Wine bar for great wine in an awesome space with live music, and Lexington Ave Brewery for beer lovers. Asheville is perfect for a girlfriend getaway, a romantic weekend with your partner or even to visit solo to relax, take in the crisp mountain air and experience amazing food and drink. We will definitely be back and I’ve already recommended Abbington Green to a bunch of my friends and colleagues. Seriously...don’t even think about staying anywhere else! BERNIE
By Bernie Siegel, MD
How Many Cats Can You Take To a Dog Show? Told By Smudge Elizabunny Siegel and Written By Dr.Bernie Siegel
W
e have a cat named Miracle in our family. When she was first adopted Doctor Bernie, my dad, treated her like a dog. I don’t mean that in a bad way. I mean he took her everywhere, walked her on a leash and trained her like a dog. She was named after a cat a lady met in a dream. The lady developed cancer and one night a cat appeared in her dream and said my name is Miracle. Then the cat told her how to treat her cancer. The lady and her doctor followed Miracle’s advice and the lady is well today.
A while ago Furphy created a miracle for my dad’s mom. She has died since this happened. My dad is doing okay. His mom was 95 and ready to be perfect again. She loved Furphy because he was less trouble than her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grandma Rose was blind and was in bed when my dad was visiting. Furphy came up to the bedroom to visit her. He jumped up on the other bed in the room and my dad’s mom said, “Tell the dog to get off the bed.” My dad said, “Furphy has restored your vision. A Miracle.” Everyone got a big laugh out of it.
So when an abandoned cat was brought home by one of the two legged Siegel boys it was named Miracle and adopted. One thing I want to warn people about if they name a pet Miracle. Dr. Bernie and his wife had to leave for the airport and Miracle was nowhere to be found so the two of them started running around the house, not fully clothed, yelling, “Miracle, Miracle, Miracle.” The neighbors avoided us for weeks after that. So explain things to the neighbors first so they don’t think odd things about you.
Well that’s about it for now except for some recent research. If you pet a real dog, not a stuffed animal, your serotonin levels and other healing hormones increase and in Australia dog owners who had a heart attack had a 6% mortality rate in the next year while those who did not have a dog at home had a mortality rate close to 30%. I think we need a law passed to force people to adopt a dog so we can save money on health care. Dr. Bernie is also researching bunny and cat survival statistics.
This summer our town had a dog show and my dad took our dog Furphy and Miracle to be in the show. They were both on leashes and Miracle sat in the middle of three dozen dogs with no problem. Dr. Bernie told the judges Miracle thinks she’s a dog and he didn’t want her feelings to be hurt by not being in the show. The kids paid more attention to Miracle then all the dogs. She didn’t win anything. Furphy won the furriest dog award. He’s a great little Lhasa Apso who loves everyone too. By the way the town said next year the dog show is only for dogs. They have no sense of humor.
For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalledneeds no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com.
Furphy’s a therapy dog and Miracle is a therapy cat. They go to nursing homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, lecture halls and anywhere Dr. Bernie goes and they are allowed to enter. This summer a dining hall refused admission to Furphy so my dad left him at the back door to wait until he finished eating. He always waits outside for him but this time he tried something new. Ten minutes later a man came walking through the dining hall yelling, “Whose dog is this?” It appears Furphy had run around to the front door and into the dining hall. So they let him stay for lunch after that. Since then he has ended up in strange offices thinking he can find his way through a building to where Dr. Bernie is. It doesn’t cause a problem because everyone knows him and he gets returned to his owner. The drive up window at the bank even has dog biscuits for Furphy when he makes a deposit. 42

WHY AN ORGANIC MATTRESS IS RIGHT FOR YOU
While we sleep, our immune system recovers and prepares for the day ahead. If your mattress is filled with airborne allergens and chemical toxins, your immune system will battle these rather than
repair itself. Regular bedding & mattresses are laden with polyurethane foam, toxic flame retardants, and water or stain resistant chemicals.
When we found out what was in our mattress, my husband said, ‘Every mother in the world should know what they are putting their child on at night.’ That was 2004, and the Clean Bedroom was born. —Chris Chamberlin, Co-founder
