PUBLISHER'SLETTER

I

t’s that time of year again! The holidays are just around the corner and so are unlimited opportunities to eat and drink! We’ve got some fantastic articles this month to help you stay on track with your nutrition and exercise and ways to reduce stress as well. Here are 5 strategies to help you without having to deprive yourself of all that this wonderful time of year has to offer!

1. Do a 15-20 minute, high intensity workout daily. If you can do it an hour before you are heading to a party where you know you’ll be drinking and eating more than normal, this will have your metabolism running faster and you’ll burn off more of the calories. 2. Eat protein first. On days that you know you’ll be consuming more calories, have a protein shake for breakfast and lunch or a protein shake for one of those meals and a high protein meal with healthy fats and veggies for the other meal (grilled chicken on salad with avocado, whole eggs scrambled with veggies, cottage cheese and berries). At a party choose protein sources to snack on if possible. 3. Go for a leisure walk, get a massage, take a nap. Anything you can do to alleviate stress will lower your cortisol levels and additional calories will not be stored as fat as easily. 4. Pick one non-negotiable for the weekend. Choose to indulge in either alcohol OR high carb foods like pizza or sweets – but not both! If you’ll be at a party all day and want to make sure you limit your consumption, try alternating a cocktail with a glass of club soda and lemon. Have one slice of pizza and fill up on veggies and grilled chicken. If dessert is your thing – sample a few of the goodies by taking 1-2 bites of each instead of eating the whole thing. 5. Manage your mindset. This might be the most important tip of all! Remember that what you indulge in over the holidays is a short-term gratification. Stay focused and committed to your long-term goal and when you hear the voice in your head telling you to have another cocktail or grab another cookie – just take a moment to stop and ask yourself if you really need it. How important is that short term pleasure? Have a glass of water or club soda and see if the urge goes away. And remember that even if you do gain a few pounds over the holidays, it’s most likely due to water retention from excess alcohol and high carb foods. The most important thing you can do is get back on your normal eating and exercise plan each week and not beat yourself up because you over-indulged. We all need to kick back and have fun – don’t add to your stress level by worrying about a few extra calories. In Health and Happiness,

THE BUZZ Artisan Opens in West Hartford Restaurant, Tavern and Garden Offer Distinctive Dining Experience

A

rtisan Restaurant, Tavern and Garden, a beloved and awardwinning restaurant with locations in Southport, CT and Newfane, VT, opened on Thursday, September 7th, just in time for the late summer harvest. ARTISAN celebrates the theme of craftsmanship, combining 18th Century classic Scandinavian design with New England-inspired farmto-table seasonal cuisine, artfully prepared by Executive Chef and Partner Frederic Kieffer. While the three Artisan locations share common threads, the West Hartford locale offers distinctive differences throughout, paying special tribute to the heritage of the area. An expansive 1500 s.f. outdoor pergola and garden - the first of its kind in the area - will offer the freshest of vegetables, herbs and spices, adding to the “garden-to-plate” experience. Guests can dine alfresco under the shaded pergola (seating for 30) adorned with timeless mason jar pendant lights or among the romantic garden (seating for 40) with its natural willow branch hanging lantern globes and soothing sounds of music. “What we are doing here is special,” stated Chef Frederic Kieffer, a classically-trained, French Chef that has worked at the helm of the Artisan’s New England fare for nearly a decade. “Our garden terrace, in conjunction with the reciprocal relationships we have established with local farms and specialty purveyors, will allow for the freshest of ingredients to find their way to your plate and, more importantly, your palate.” The New England-inspired cuisine is influenced by the rhythm of the seasons and farmstead offerings, delineated on the menu by source - The Garden, The Mill, The Sea and The Land. A notable dish from The Garden is the Baked Vegan Tian, a composition of layered seasonal garden bounty that will thrill our most discerning vegetarian and vegan guests. From The Mill, the Royal Shrimp and Grits pairs heavenly with sweet royal red shrimp, indigenous from Stonington Connecticut, with authentic Carolina gold rice grits, combined into an unforgettable taste of true American delicacies. From The Sea, the Artisan Seafood Chowder, a New England tradition revisited with a lighter and brighter approach with hints of anise flavor, oysters, clams, shrimp and fennel-black pepper crackers, served table-side. From The Land the Bison Carpaccio is enhanced with creamy stracciatella, sweet pickled chanterelles and zesty roquette arugula. For dessert, a potted, fluffy and velvety cheesecake topped with a seasonal fruit concoction will leave guests wanting more. Located in the heart of Blue Back Square at the Delamar Hotel, ARTISAN Restaurant, Tavern and Garden is open seven days a week. Social Hour 3:00pm - 6:00pm. Dinner service Sunday to Wednesday 5:00pm - 10:30pm, and Thursday to Saturday 5:00pm - 11:00pm. Brunch from 11:00am to 3:00pm. The bar will be open late. Fragrance oils: Fragrance oils are scented oils that are partially or wholly made from synthetic aromatic compounds although many fragrance oil blends do contain essential oils. We source high quality, phthalate-free fragrance oils and our labels will state “fragrance oil” when it is present in a product. Did you know that fragrance oils are often the more responsible source of scent than essential oils? The sandalwood tree has been over-harvested and is endangered. It is far more responsible to use a fragrance oil to bring this scent to life rather than endangering more trees. It takes 312 pounds of rose petals to make 1 ounce of rose essential oil. The current cost for one ounce, or two tablespoons, of rose oil is about $530. As lovely as rose is, it is far too expensive to use to make soap. Essential oils: Essential oils are fragrant oils wholly made from natural sources such as the flowers, leaves, bark, berries, roots, resins, or other parts of plants. Our all-natural products are scented and flavored with pure essential oils. It is important to understand the properties of any essential oil you plan to use, and to use it at the appropriate dilution and application. Our labels will state “essential oil” when it is present in a product. Preservatives: Many Kettlepot products are preservative-free, such as our bar soaps, lip balms, massage butters and oils, body butters, arnica balms, bath bombs, bubble bars, perfumes, and menthol shower steamers. However, we do use preservatives in our lotions, emulsified sugar scrub, cuticle treatment gel, insect spray, and liquid soap. Why these products? In a word, water. These products contain water, a necessary ingredient for microbial growth. We believe that is it not safe for you to use, nor for us to sell, a product that is not preserved. We use a paraben-free, formaldehyde-donorfree preservative in our lotions, sugar scrub, and cuticle gel and a natural preservative in our insect spray and liquid soap. Kettlepot uses only natural, plant-sourced oils and butters; essential oils for flavor or fragrance; and botanicals, plant-infused oils, charcoal, earthen oxides, or clays for color. We offer a lovely selection of all natural bar soaps, body butters, perfumes, lip balms, and more. We also make a number of products that are mostly natural, i.e., 95-99% natural. We use our natural, plant-based oils and add fragrance oils, mica colorants, edible flavor oils, or preservatives when needed. Our lotions, sugar scrubs, cuticle treatment gel, most colorful bar soaps, and liquid soap fall into this category. Natural skin care products can be both beautiful and affordable. It’s easy to be smart about skin care if you remember a few simple things: S: be a savvy, informed consumer ~ don’t fall for hype or irrational claims, M: be wary of medical claims that are not supported by testing A: be aware of any allergies you may have, R: read labels and research/ask about ingredients unfamiliar to you, T: treat yourself to handmade ~ we think you’ll be glad that you did! Kettlepot Soap is your smart choice for fresh, from-scratch skin care goodies. See ad on page 27. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Don’t You Want Your Skin to be “Skinfully Pure”?

A

goal of mine has always been to make artisan handcrafted products that people loved and wanted to buy. So, when a local farmer mentioned to me that she gives some of her goats’ milk to a friend who makes soap with it, naturally, I had to find out more. I signed up for a soap-making class and was hooked. I was inspired and knew immediately this was the beginning of my adventure.

As an aesthetician and spa owner, all-natural, paraben-free, phthalate-free, and palm oil-free ingredients are important to me. I don’t want random chemicals on my skin, so why would I put them on anyone else’s? Most commercial products are full of chemicals, however I use all natural and organic ingredients in the products I create. Knowing that goat milk is an excellent ingredient for nourishing and moisturizing the skin, I experimented and developed skin-nourishing soap recipes with mild lather and amazing scents that make you breathe in and say ahhhhh! The difference in how my skin looks and feels is amazing! I will never buy store-bought soap again. After seeing the documentary, Before the Flood, with Leonardo DiCaprio, I knew I was never going to use palm oil in my products. The recent press surrounding the devastation to wildlife habitats, especially orangutans, that is caused by the destruction of rain forests in order to have palm plantations was very disturbing to me. I want to make a positive impact on my environment and I want to be environmentally responsible, so no palm oil is my motto. With the introduction of my homemade goat-milk soap, I launched my “Skinfully Pure” line of healthy, sustainable body-care products. I created Skinfully Pure for those of you who are environmentally conscious and who appreciate the difference and quality of all natural handmade products. I started with goat milk soap and have expanded to lotions, body butters, foot balms, lip balms, bath bombs and shower fizzies. An eye balm and facial mask will be added in the near future.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Energy Healing is Our Birthright

I

t is believed that the same energy flows through all things and that absolutely everything, seen and unseen, is interconnected by fine threads of energy, creating an intricately woven web. When any of these threads are weakened, imbalance occurs. This imbalance may present in the form of individual illness, community struggle, or global suffering. If these damaged threads can be identified and repaired, healing can happen, be it subtle or obvious and on the physical, emotional or spiritual planes. The practitioner's service is to help restore the web, energetically balancing the threads and the spaces between them. My personal approach to energy healing is through the practice of shamanism, the oldest known spiritual path, dating back 60,0001000,000 years. This is an ancient, cross-cultural path whose purpose is to restore the balance and interconnectedness of all things, what shamans refer to as the "All that is". All things in the universe are equally important in the "All that is". A drop of water, a blade of grass, a single cell...all the same. The known and the unknown, the seen and the unseen, the tangible and the intangible...all are valued equally. Shamanism is not a one-size-fits-all practice. It invites us to draw from everything meaningful we have ever thought, known, sensed, believed, or experienced. No path honors individuality more than shamanism. Shamanic practice is supported and enriched by each individual's perception of the universe and his/her connection to it. Traditional teachings should be learned and practiced respectfully, combined with non-traditional techniques utilizing the students' life experiences. I like to think of my healing arts practice as an over-flowing tool box, at times, playfully more like a toy box, filled with possibilities gathered by 30+ years in the spiritual and healing arts. My primary goal is to teach adults and children how to connect more deeply to the "All that is". This may take the form of individual or group experiences and involve direct hands-on energy work; remote energy transmission; sound vibrations using drums, rattles or gongs; techniques employing color, gemstones and crystals; and through shamanic journeying, yoga, soul retrieval or extraction. At times, I find that placing the client in a light hypnotic trance increases receptivity, allowing the release of limiting thoughts, thus increasing the effectiveness of other modalities. Sessions conclude with self-empowerment suggestions to continue healing on one's own. As a lifelong educator as well as a lifelong learner, I am delighted to guide adults and children on their unique and sacred journeys. Joyce St. Germaine, M. What Happens to Your Immune System During Stress!

10BEST WINNERS Congratulations to our 10Best Winners of our reader’s choice survey on the best Energy Healers and Yoga & Pilates

D

id you know it takes your immune system 6 HOURS to return to homeostasis after only 2 minutes of stress? At two minutes, Let It Go! It’s well known that “stress is a killer” and prolonged stressful situations can make you sick. When we allow ourselves to remain in a state of stress, our bodies go into fight-or-flight mode which is very taxing on the immune system, and eventually causes havoc throughout the body. Your heart rate increases, your breathing becomes shallow, your muscles contract, and you may break into a sweat. Your adrenal glands activate the adrenaline rush shooting up your cortisol level, which can eventually lead to belly fat. There are a variety of natural, alternative and complementary therapies that can be utilized to help you manage your stress and eventually eliminate it. A Reiki treatment can cleanse the aura, clear energy blocks in the chakras and meridians and release subconscious fears. Its beautiful universal light reconnects us to all that is within our heart, realigning us with our Higher Self. Many essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, or yling ylang can work on the pathways of the nervous system to reduce stress and offer a calming effect, sometimes instantly. Before you sleep, find a guided meditation that speaks to you with a soothing voice, and listen to it as you drift off to sleep. Crystals such as amethyst induce calming moods and restful sleep. A larger piece can be set on your bedside table, within 4 feet of your aura, or placed under your pillow at night as well. Even something as simple as a few minutes of deep breathing techniques can offer tremendous healing to reduce the heart rate and return you to homeostasis. Whatever methods you find resonate with you to offer you stress relief, it is truly important to learn to recognize what it is that is causing you the stress to begin with. Diet, nutritional deficiencies, toxins, and lack of exercise can all contribute to a buildup of stress. During a health consultation, I can review many of these common stress triggers with you on a personal level to directly address the root of the problem. From a holistic mind-body-spirit perspective, that is much more important that trying to treat the symptom. Yoga Spotlight Yoga Brings You Back to the Now

T

herapeutic Yoga happens when the yoga therapist stimulates one’s own healing process. The therapist does not fix the student but empowers the student to heal themselves. It is a partnership in healing and can happen in a one-onone environment or in a class setting. It is your birthright to be empowered, to heal yourself and to find the Joy that is inside of you all the time (if you CHOOSE to notice it)! How does one find the joy in the dark moments? The answer is through becoming present to the Now. So how does one become present? By tuning into your breath. We ALL have the choice in every moment to find the joy… and one way to come back to the present moment and find the joy is through yoga or dance and shifting your focus from the past and/or future to the present moment. In a Kripalu Yoga class you focus on the wisdom of the body. It seems many of us live from the neck up…planning, organizing, thinking, over-thinking and sometimes that means not listening to the messages of the body. Kripalu means giver of compassion. Can you be compassionate and listen to your body? Can you be present and focus your attention on the small stirrings of the heart, notice without judging and use the breath as an anchor to be in the moment? Your healing and empowerment might begin right at that very moment. One of the hallmarks of a Kripalu Yoga class is BRFWA (breathe, relax, feel, watch and allow). When you can tune your attention to the breath, either by doing a conscious breath technique or actually watching/witnessing the breath as it travels in through the nostrils and out again, you begin to become more present. Your body might begin to soften, to surrender a little, and you may be able to notice where you are holding, tight, constricted and without deciding if anything is good or bad, you may become more present, more in the now and perhaps a little softer.

Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2017

As you breathe, relax, feel and begin to watch what is happening without judging it, consciously witnessing, perhaps you can begin to acknowledge what is there. That acknowledging is really powerful! If you are feeling anxious, say Hello Anxiety! If you are feeling sad, perhaps grieving, say Hello Sadness. You know we are all made of energy. Emotions are Energy in Motion. Yoga and specifically Kripalu Yoga, can help you to shift your energy. Yoga, brings you back to the now, to being present, to being able to let go, to being

able to trust. Trusting in a divine presence, something greater than us, whatever that is, that you are not alone, is so very healing and also very empowering. Energize Your Health and Control Stress through Yoga

Why Yoga Matters More than You Think Yoga ~ To Yoke, To Join, To Connect Prana ~ Vitality, Life Force Namaste ~ The divine light in me recognizes the divine light in you

T T

he Director of The Yoga Center in Greenwich, CT, Lauren Berger, has been practicing yoga for 27 years. She started practicing as a form of exercise to stretch her tight muscles which were built over years of training as an extreme skier. What she learned over time, is that yoga does have its physical benefits, developing long, lean muscles, but the overall health and stress management tools that yoga practice teaches makes it a wholebody experience. Through yoga practice, one realizes that the only way to affect our future and take control of our lives is by managing the present moment. To control ourselves, our actions, our words, what we eat, what we think, and above all, our attitude. Our goal in yoga is to be objective and non-judgmental, so we can see through a clear lens. Every person on this earth has their own struggles to deal with. We never fully know what someone else is going through. As all change requires hard work and overcoming obstacles, the practice of yoga requires effort. Committing to something builds our ability to focus. Yoga teaches us to minimize distractions and build mental focus while strengthening the body and the brain to bring us to balance. One becomes increasingly more demanding of oneself, learning, becoming stronger and improving ability to handle any struggle presented to us in life. As focus is honed, learning to manage and control our breath helps to control our entire nervous system. Things are as they are, how we perceive them is under our control. We all have the power to choose our view. When you spill something on your shirt or start your day knocking over and breaking your favorite vase, or you are late to work because your child had a meltdown or overslept, how we respond to these everyday issues and situations present us with choices. All day we are making choices. We want to learn to be responsive from a place of calm and clarity, versus being reactionary. This is what yoga teaches us.

ranslating these 3 words alone offers us insight as to why the practices of yoga are so powerful. Many of us are consumed and regurgitated day after day within the busy “business” of life. Many of our spirits are overworked and underpaid in regards to the self-care we offer ourselves. Audre Lorde quotes, “I have come to believe that caring for myself is not self-indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival.” In a world where technology has sped things up, we can struggle to slow things down and find it challenging to access our most important “devices”. There are yoga studios, yoga shows and yoga apps all within reach and yet so many of us struggle creating time to put our oxygen mask on first. The truth is you don’t need fancy clothes or a flexible body to do yoga. All you need is a willingness to go inside of you. We take over 21,000 breaths a day - let’s notice a few. Close your eyes and say silently, “I am here now.” Take 10 breaths noticing coolness of inhale thru the nostrils and the weight of breath out as you exhale thru mouth. Unhinge the jaw. Sigh. Let go. Pause. Ask yourself: “How am I feeling?” “How am I not feeling?” “What do I need in this moment?” - Observe what arises. As we practice LISTENING for insight and information, we realize wherever ‘I go, there I am’ and what we do or don’t do generates energy that either brightens our light or dims it. The power of the pause allows sediment to settle so we can more clearly see what’s beneath the surface of our mind. By observing what it feels like to be inside of ourselves we often intuitively start seeking what helps us to be more balanced. Yoga is more important than you think because it is not just exercise. The practices of yoga reconnect us to ourselves. To one another. To our unique light, to the universal source of all beings. To what’s important and what’s not important. Yoga helps us find more balance, steadiness and ease in our thoughts and our actions. Yoga matters most because the whole world benefits when we are more connected to ourselves and one another. Just for a week commit to 60 seconds of breath and observation. Kristin Cork is a life-long student and has been a teacher of yoga for 2 decades. At her studio Be.Yoga in Avon, you can find her guiding people to breathe, pause, ponder and connect. Her classes are moving meditations whether gentle or strong. Join her starting in January for the next journey of 100 hr “Be.ing Within” Immersion & 200 hr “Be.Teaching from Within” Yoga Training. See ad on page 9.

The Yoga Center of Greenwich focuses on practicing yoga in a heated room. Our practice is a slower moving meditation which is focused on proper alignment first. Meditation does more than help calm our emotions and reduce cortisol levels to help manage our stress responses, meditation also improves our immune function and reduces inflammation. The Yoga Center Greenwich is a unique environment focusing on the details of yoga practice with a warm and empowering community, igniting a powerful energy from within. A Leaner, Happier and Healthier Holiday Season By Shannon Homkovics, ND o matter how much our culture changes, year after year, one of the top New Year’s resolutions never seems to change. If you guessed losing weight and eating healthier, you’re right! People seem to be more inclined to make healthier eating choices and incorporate some sort of exercise regimen prior to the holiday season. However, as soon as Thanksgiving shows up on the calendar, we throw our health-conscious values and ideals out the window. By the time January 1 rolls around, we find ourselves cringing at the choices we’ve made in the past 30 plus days! We remember all the pie we consumed, the holiday beverages we had one too many of, and the exercise that quite frankly, just did not exist.

N

Many of us find ourselves in this same predicament year after year. By the time we’ve entered the New Year, reality sets in. We feel bloated, heavier, tired and drained. Many people complain of gaining anywhere from 5-10 pounds. No matter what the number on the scale, we end the year feeling not so great about ourselves. But what if this year you decided to do something different? What if instead you were to end the year feeling healthy, vibrant, and more energized than before? The holidays should be a time to recharge with our loved ones; a time to reflect, appreciate, and rest. We don’t have to end the year feeling run down. All we need to do is make better food and lifestyle choices. Here are just a few ideas to stay more fit, healthier, and happier this holiday season:

Experience The Solution! A unique program designed to quiet your chaotic mind and engage your peaceful heart so you can: • Discover past experiences that are blocking your success • Release emotional trauma and become more grounded and present in your life • Align your goals to bring forth your soul’s desired destiny Steps include: an Akashic Record reading, a Reiki session, a Crystal Dreaming session, Law of Attraction session and Angel attunement!

Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2017

Keep going to the gym. The holidays can be very hectic, chaotic and even stressful at times. With so much to do, we tend to feel overwhelmed and exercising gets moved to the bottom of the list. Instead of looking at exercise as another chore to be done this holiday season, see it as an outlet to release any tension you may be feeling. Exercise will naturally reduce stress by increasing your endorphins and reducing cortisol. When we exercise regularly we feel great, look great, and keep our bodies moving towards a state of health. Indulge, but don’t over-indulge. One of the best parts of the holidays is the food and drinks. We all deserve to let loose a little and occasionally have that piece of pie…or at least a few bites of it. Unfortunately, many of us don’t just overeat during the celebrations, but during all the weeks in between too. We tend to think, “well I ate bad already, and the rest of the holidays will be here before I know it, what’s the point of eating healthy now?” Consider allowing yourself to indulge on the big days like Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, and New Year’s, then stay in control during the days and weeks in between. This allows us to have something to look forward to, while not falling into that self-destructive pattern where we actually gain weight. Emotional eating and stress eating are also common during this time of year. If you feel yourself beginning to emotionally eat, give yourself a moment to think about why you might be doing it. Are you bored? Are you upset about something? Are you stressed out? Are you just reaching for the first thing you see? Finding the root of why you want to eat something unhealthy may help you to avoid it entirely. Your healthy diet is a lifestyle change, not just a New Year’s Resolution. Many of us tend to fall into this trap. We find ourselves justifying our poor eating choices and lack of exercise because we plan on starting this miraculous diet come January 1st. Unfortunately, healthy living is exactly what it is, a way of life. Most people set the bar too high for their New Year’s resolution, and find themselves back to square one before the month is even over. Instead, continue to exercise and make healthy eating a priority during the holidays. This allows us to make a more reasonable New Year’s Resolution such as, “taking my supplements every day, or “trying that new spin class at my gym.” Small and consistent changes are the way to go. Making even minor changes at holiday events can really help to reduce your caloric intake. One of my favorites tricks is to eat before you go to a party. It's easier to make good food choices when you're not hungry. Staying away from that piece of bread, eating one cookie instead of two, sticking to higher protein-rich foods, and consuming lighter alcoholic beverages will also help. All of these smart choices will add up to a fitter, leaner, happier, and healthier holiday season! Dr. Shannon Homkovics received her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. She was recently named the Director of the award-winning Life Diet Weight Loss Program at The Life Center of Connecticut. Her tools include diet and nutrition, nutritional supplements, botanical medicine, acupuncture, counseling, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and lifestyle changes. by overstimulation or fatigue of the adrenal gland and overproduction of cortisol. If sleep deprivation occurs for more than 4 or 5 days, consult a naturopathic doctor to help determine and treat the cause.

How to Prevent Colds and Flu Naturally! By Katy Firisin, ND

C

old and Flu season is now commercially defined as the period from October until May, with the peak in cold and flu activity between December and February. Here are some of the most important things to consider to keep yourself healthy through the fall and winter months. Virus vs. Host Viruses and bacteria are in our environment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 12 months a year. So why do we have a “season” when we get sick? Some research does show that viruses are slightly more robust at colder temperatures. However, if the weather were the only factor, wouldn’t everyone in colder temperatures automatically get sick? The most significant factor contributing to whether someone contracts a bug is susceptibility. How well your immune system functions will determine whether you present with symptoms of a cold or flu and the severity of those symptoms. The Reason for the Season? What factors affect the strength of our immune system? Fatigue, stress, lack of sleep, and sugar and alcohol intake are just a few. When children return to school and extracurricular activities; when pumpkin spice everything and holiday cookies abound; when we travel home for the holidays and have a sip or two of eggnog, these factors and therefore our susceptibility to illness will increase. One of our most important immune cells, a neutrophil, is responsible for tackling these invaders. A study from The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed a decrease in neutrophil activity for up to 5 hours after consuming 100 grams of glucose, sucrose, fructose, honey or orange juice. A pumpkin spice latte and muffin together have 96 grams of sugar! Avoidance of sugar alone can increase your immune function dramatically. Getting your Zzz’s Our sleep wake cycle or circadian rhythm is the strongest regulator of our immune function. Our adaptive immune cell production and cell differentiation occur mostly at night while we are sleeping. Prolonged sleep curtailment for as few as 4 days can have a significant effect on our immune system. Improving your sleep is critical to preventing illness. Decreasing electronic use before bed, using a sleep sachet of lavender and hops on your pillow, or diffusing essential oils like lavender and chamomile can help prepare the body for sleep. Low doses of magnesium (350-500 mg) and melatonin (0.5-5 mg) can be helpful if taken 1 hour before bed. Often sleep disturbances are caused

Creating a Healthy Gut Our digestive tract is responsible for 70-80% of our immune function. Maintaining the health of our gut can make a difference in our overall health and ability to fight off colds and flus. Probiotics play a key role in regulating immune cell function and help to decrease inflammation in the intestinal mucosa. A good probiotic with at least a 10 billion count with diverse microbes is essential. The healthier our gut the more likely we are to absorb immune boosting nutrients from our fruits and vegetables like vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, and other polyphenols and antioxidants. Pumpkin seeds, grass fed beef, spinach and kale are all rich sources of zinc. Homeopathic Flu Prevention Many people are seeking alternatives to the influenza vaccine. In 2016-2017 the CDC reported only 42% effectiveness of the flu vaccine. That means you still had a 58% chance of getting the flu! In 2010-2011 season the efficacy was as low as 19%. An emerging alternative to conventional vaccines is the homeopathic flu immunization protocol designed to help your body recognize flu viruses and improve your immune response to these pathogens. Taking a single dose of this specialized homeopathic remedy once a month during cold and flu season can greatly decrease your susceptibility. The ways to support your immune system naturally are many and varied. If you do come down with a cold or flu, antibiotics will not fight against viruses. Naturopathic medicine is a wonderful resource to assess your health, your nutritional status and to treat you naturally should you develop a cold or flu. Having a finely tuned immune system and early treatment are always the best approach. Dr. Katy Firisin is now offering Homeopathic Flu Immunization at her practice. She is a licensed Naturopathic Physician at Coastal Natural Medicine, in Southport, CT. She brings over 20 years of experience in healthcare to her practice with a focus on family medicine, gastrointestinal conditions, cardiovascular health, autoimmune disorders and detoxification. Dr. Firisin accepts the following insurance: Cigna, BCBS, Oxford and Connecticare. Please call 475-999-2032 or visit www.coastalnaturalmedicine.com to learn more. See ad on page 8.

Eco-Travel: Can We Really ‘Green’ Travel?

• Premiere Hotel and Suites in New Haven • Saybrook Point Inn in Old Saybrook • Trinity Conference Center in West Cornwall Here are a few other ways to be Eco-Friendly while traveling:

By Jenna Stockwell

I

t seems everywhere you look these days the terms ‘Green’ and ‘Eco-Friendly’ are thrown around so loosely it’s hard to determine what, if any, positive environmental impact we can make on the things we do every day. Take for example Green household cleaning products. Does ‘green’ mean they were produced in a facility that uses renewable energy or that the ingredients or packaging are more natural? Now don’t get me wrong, I’m THRILLED to see more and more companies taking the idea of sustainability more seriously but it’s becoming increasingly more difficult as a consumer to navigate how we can make the most positive environmental impact. We hear a lot about bringing canvas bags to the grocery store, recycling and reducing household waste and cutting down on home energy use but there is one industry rarely spoken about that can potentially make the biggest impact. This is the Travel industry. According to the U.S Department of Commerce, direct spending on leisure travel by domestic and international travelers totaled $683.1 billion in 2016. People all over the world are clearly traveling more than ever, but are we truly considering the environmental impact our travel has? According to the EPA in 2014, 31% of

18

Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2017

total U.S CO2 Emissions were the result of the transportation industry and 37% were from the production of electricity. It seems everything from your plane ride and rental car to the electricity it takes to wash your towels at the hotel are contributing to these staggering numbers. So, what can you do? The first thing to consider is the mode of transportation you need to get from here to there. Can you take a bus or a train rather than a plane? Once at your destination can you rent a bicycle instead of a car, use Uber or at least rent a hybrid car? Next you need to choose a hotel or resort. There are some great websites to help you choose a more environmentally friendly Hotel. Try www. environmentallyfriendlyhotels.com which gives you the lowdown on hotels in any area and which are making a serious effort to be Eco-friendly. Right here in CT, for example, there are several Hotels on the forefront of this movement. • Crowne Plaza Hartford in South Cromwell • Fitch Claremont House B&B in Bozrah • Green Rocks Inn in Ridgefield

1. Participate in some kind of sustainable activity when you arrive at your destination. Something as simple as grabbing a garbage bag and doing a beach, park or river cleanup can make a big difference. My husband and I often bring a plastic bag on our hikes and simply pick up any trash we come across. 2. Research local organizations near your destinations to see if there are any volunteer opportunities you can take part in. Yes, it may take a few hours away from your suntan but the feeling of contribution far outweighs any missed relaxation time. 3. Support the local economy by shopping at small businesses, farmer’s markets and local artist stands where you can find truly unique treasures. I have traveled to many countries and my favorite gifts have been handcrafted by the natives of the area. I can remember the faces of the children in Fiji who made a shell necklace and the young men in Ghana, Africa who made a bracelet with my name on it. 4. Book your trip through a site that offsets your Carbon footprint making your entire trip Zero Carbon. This is BY FAR the most impactful thing you can do for the environment. The

EPA has a calculator that determines how much CO2 is created from your trip and there is a company willing to purchase the equivalent in Carbon Offsets. You may think this would be costly but booking through this site CAN SAVE YOU UP TO 50% on airfare, rental cars and hotels AND your trip has no negative impact on the environment. For more information on this incredible way to make an impact check out naturalnutmeg.travellight. com.

Breaking the Stress-Sleepy Cycle By Nick Edgerton, ND, LAc

S

tress and sleep, or lack thereof, can have significant pathological and clinical implications. Stress and sleep are cyclically related to one another. Meaning, with stress comes sleep problems, and with a lack of sleep comes an improper stress response. What is Stress? Let’s define stress as a state of physical, mental or emotional tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. The nervous system has two speeds, one being the sympathetic nervous system which acts as an accelerator and referred to as the fight-or-flight response, and the other being the parasympathetic nervous system which acts as the brakes and referred to as the rest-and-digest response. These two different modes of the nervous system recruit different hormones and neurotransmitters. One can measure the physiologic response to stress perceived by the body via hormones and neurotransmitters. Cortisol, which everyone has, is considered the stress hormone. However, it is not as easy as testing this one level in the blood and determining if a patient has an aberrant stress response. A more accurate way to test is to look at the salivary cortisol level 4 times throughout the day which determines the cortisol curve. Elevated cortisol is a clear sign of the body being under stress. However, a low cortisol can also indicate significant stress over a long period of time which causes the adrenal glands, where cortisol is produced, to burn out. This example of low cortisol is often referred to as ‘adrenal fatigue’, which is not recognized by conventional medicine. This might be for good reason, because it is more of an issue with hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction (HPA dysfunction), which is a complex reaction between several glands in the body. Neurotransmitters are another component differing between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The fight or flight response yields an increase in norepinephrine and epinephrine, more commonly known as adrenaline.

Our ancestors would stress over uncontrollable circumstances like extreme weather or a lack of food. In the modern day, we are blessed/cursed to have ‘first world problems’, such as the dryer not drying clothes on time, being late to work, not getting as many ‘likes’ on social media as our cohorts, and post-election stress disorder. There are certainly significant stressors in our world today, such as turning on the news, getting notifications on our smartphones about North Korea testing missiles and threatening nuclear war, and looming superstorms with increasing frequency. The purpose of these examples demonstrates that everyone is affected by stress. One person may have a different stress response to a given stimulus compared to another person. For example, one person may witness a motor vehicle accident and remain cool and collected, while someone else will have a panic attack. This difference is not absolute, but due to varying combination of genetics, environment, and state of physiology (hormones and neurotransmitters). There are ways to combat stress no matter the person and the intensity of stress. Stress vs. Sleep Let’s define sleep as a condition of body and mind such as that which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the muscles relaxed, and consciousness suspended. Humans need adequate sleep to have a normal healthy nervous system. Without enough restorative sleep, the nervous system will be on edge throughout the coming day causing an exaggerated stress response to relatively insignificant events. Stress can have a negative impact on sleep. The cortisol curve, as mentioned previously, is supposed to be highest during the morning with sunrise, and then taper down throughout the day with the lowest level accompanying sunset and thereafter. Melatonin is another hormone, which is opposite to cortisol and elevates during the dark hours of the night and diminishes during daylight. Many people use melatonin for sleep support, however this approach does not consider cortisol. In fact, melatonin deficiency only occurs in older adults, as one makes less melatonin over the age of 50. Despite this, cortisol is still the predominant issue and cortisol regulation is often the goal of proper circadian rhythm. If cortisol is elevated (or depressed as in HPA dysfunction/adrenal fatigue) chances are there will be issues with sleep. Sleep Hygiene Sleep hygiene is an important topic of discussion. Did you know blue-light, the spectrum of light emitted from screens, is neuro-excitatory. During the day, blue light

is part of the spectrum emitted by the sun, thus it is normal to see blue-light during the day, along with having normal peak in cortisol. However, at night, people consume hours of screen time after the sun sets, which continues to stimulate the mind and provoke cortisol. This can play a factor in why people get in bed and have a mind that is wide awake. Along the same line of thought, our ancestors did not work after the sunset due to the lack of light. Today, people exercise after work, which stimulates the sympathetic response which increases cortisol in the evening and potentially disrupts the natural circadian rhythm. There are many natural approaches to both ends of this vicious cycle involving stress and sleep. It is obvious that the treatment principle would include de-stressing and promoting restorative sleep. Finding the obstacle to cure is the tricky part. Insomnia could be due to too much stress and a racing mind at night, however it can also be due to or compounded by hormone fluctuations, side-effects of medications, and too much caffeine during the day among other reasons. If it is truly stress-related then treating the stress is imperative. This is where cortisol management is applicable. As previously mentioned, HPA dysfunction is often at the root of cortisol issues. Treating the glands involved in this axis can be complicated however it often reduces to several overlapping principles: anti-inflammatory diet and supplementation, hormone modulating botanical medicine therapies, moderate exercise (morning or early afternoon), stress reduction, and proper sleep hygiene. Other ways to treat stress include meditation, relaxing botanicals (nervines, nourish the nervous system), adaptogenic herbs to support the adrenals, and nutraceutical supplementation, among other treatments. It is important to work with a qualified practitioner to find what nutraceutical supplementation (GABA, L-Theanine, Vitamin B complex, etc.) and the corresponding doses may be most beneficial. Also, regular self-care treatments are beneficial, such as regular acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, reiki, among other treatments. Mind-Body Medicines: An Essential Component For Health And Healing

By Robert Lee, ND, MS, MA

id you know the mind is among the most powerful tools you could utilize for healing and health? Mind-body Medicines (or MBMs) are among some of the most effective treatments for improving psychological, emotional and social health, work or school productivity, addictions, criminal rehabilitation, and many – perhaps all - physical ailments. MBMs address the root cause of illness, involving the mind’s subconscious beliefs, perceptions, and decision surrounding separation rather than oneness. MBMs help people release separation and its results (such as illness) while revealing greater union with the heart of life. What are Mind-Body Medicines? Mind-Body Medicines are a group of personal practices which apply mental, emotional, behavioral, physical, and spiritual methods to enhance overall health and recovery from many types of medical conditions. MBMs focus on healing the mind first, in recognition of its essential nature for all healing and the most advanced levels of health. MBM’s have been utilized for thousands of years by practically all cultures, including every type of spiritual master. However, we have yet to experience the full capacity of MBMs as healing catalysts. We are still learning about what MBM’s have to offer.

All MBMs share a common aim, to encourage a universal experience centered around relaxation, peace, happiness, quietness, contentment, completeness, alertness, expansiveness, health, unification, present moment awareness, timelessness, life, and love. To those inclined to spiritual language, this equates to union with the universe; to others, enlightenment, nirvana, the one Mind and/ or Higher Self. Combining different types of MBM’s may create a synergistic effect. The most common and effective MBMs include meditation and other relaxation techniques, mindfulness, yoga, tai chi/ qi gong, other forms of mindful movement, acupuncture, forgiveness, spirituality/religion, the 12-step program, hypnosis, breathing exercises, mindful eating, self-help literature, journaling, using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or other psychotherapies. Specific MBMs are more effective than others depending on the individual’s needs and medical condition(s). MBMs are very safe and effective therapies, with generally much lower side effects, risks and cost than medications and surgery. Their health benefits also go far beyond treating the medical condition. Mind-Body Medicines are most effective when used alongside additional standard medical treatment, where they can support and even catalyze recovery and overall well-being. MBMs should rarely be used as stand-alone treatments. Research evidence is now showing how beneficial MBM’s can be when used within healthcare settings. Healthcare usage of MBMs is established and continuing to grow exponentially. Research supporting the use and integration of MBMs today: • For over a decade, CBT has been considered first-line therapy for insomnia and most psychological conditions (e.g., depression, anxiety, stressful events, etc.) as well as a secondary treatment option for over 100 additional medical conditions. • Standard of care guidelines for chronic low back and other pain conditions recommend that several MBMs (e.g., CBT, meditation, mindfulness, yoga, tai chi, acupuncture and progressive relaxation) be tried prior to medications and other conventional methods. • Meditation, breathing techniques and other relaxation techniques are commonly recommended for anxiety and stress, and mindfulness is among the top tools for overcoming panic attacks or other stressful situations.

• Transcendental meditation is endorsed by the American Heart Association for blood pressure reduction support and preliminary evidence shows that it may drastically reduce risk of heart disease related events and mortality. • CBT, 12-step program, meditation, mindfulness and forgiveness therapies have proven themselves generally effective for addictions to tobacco, alcohol and/or drugs in compliant participants. • Hypnosis can drastically improve surgical outcomes, irritable bowel syndrome, addictions, and other conditions. • Yoga practice is associated with better overall health outcomes than any other behavior yet studied, it can significantly support pregnancy outcomes, and was recently endorsed by standard guidelines to support depression remission. • Yoga, tai chi, CBT, mindful eating, acupuncture and hypnosis can support weight loss. • Breathing exercises are customarily recommended for lung conditions like COPD as are relaxation techniques for headaches. • Studies show that transcendental meditation, MBSR and the relaxation response can each reduce medical costs by about 30-50%. • Meditation and mindfulness can drastically improve work/school productivity and programs are becoming increasingly available within schools, corporations and prisons. • Acupuncture can also be very effective for nausea, sinusitis, headaches and supportive for mental-emotional health and most medical conditions. • Several MBMs have been shown to improve immune status including skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and shingles as well as infection risk and recovery. • Several MBMs are also conventionally recommended as supportive care during cancer, HIV and other chronic disease treatments, where improvement in quality of life is consistently seen as well as drastic improvements in remission and mortality (i.e., in some breast cancer studies). Top Mind-Body Medicine resources for my patients include discussing principles of and reading A Course In Miracles and related texts, Zen Teachings on Transmission

of Mind by Huang Po (free pdf available online), mindfulness, forgiveness, yoga, tai chi, Pilates, mindful walking/movement, being in nature, service to others, Transcendental Meditation, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, vipassana meditation retreats, Kriya yoga, kundalini, mindful eating, other meditation techniques, EFT, gut directed hypnotherapy and hypnosis. Very helpful are teachings of Jesus, Buddha, Yogananda, Dr. David Hawkins, Edgar Cayce, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Eckart Tolle, Marianne Williamson, Gary Renard, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Thich Nahn Hahn, PhD, PsychD and other spiritual teachers, as well as referrals to licensed psychologists specializing in CBT and other psychotherapies. It is recommended that you seek out MBMs that resonate most strongly with the core of your being, including your particular personal and medical needs. Consider trying multiple MBMs and understand that each one helps to cultivate the universal experience briefly described above. It is also important to utilize MBMs and this experience practically, so that they can help you find greater peace and success within and through life’s obstacles. MBMs are here to support our personal and collective healing and health, and experience the ever-expanding joy, inspiration, love and amazement that life has to offer. End the Nightmare of Insomnia By Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BC

A

re your eyes bleary as you read this? Did you just stifle a yawn? If so, you’re not alone because over 30 million adults and over two million children suffer from insomnia every year. Having worked with hundreds of clients who struggle to get some shut-eye, I know the toll it takes on their lives. And having helped corporations who are working to decrease the expense of an unhealthy work-force, I know the toll it takes on companies too. Did you know that employers spend around $3,200 more in health care costs on employees with sleep problems? Insomnia is defined as, “a prolonged and abnormal inability to obtain adequate sleep,” and comes in many different forms from not being able to fall asleep, to not being able to stay asleep. Then there’s transient insomnia, which is occasional and lasts from one night to a week, short-term which can span up to a month, or chronic which can last for a month or more. No matter what form it takes it wreaks havoc in our lives, havoc in our families, our bank accounts, at work and on the road. Did you know that 100,000 accidents occur annually due to drowsy driving and about 1,500 of those accidents are fatal? I had one poor woman come in who hadn’t slept for more than a few hours a night in over five years! She lost her job, was unable to drive and felt like she was looking at life through a thick haze and could no longer make sense of even the simplest conversations. Thankfully, that siege on sleep has ended for her and she’s back to enjoying a productive life. If you have insomnia, you know how challenging it can be. It can affect all aspects of life and can be a living nightmare.

Sleep Disturbances Thankfully, there is help. Our bodies have been designed to get the sleep we need for health. Even though you may not remember it, there was a time in your past, before the “interference” came in, when you slept as your body was designed to sleep. That “interference” grew in your system over time. Just like the maple seeds that land in the yard in the spring, before you know it, it’s a little sapling. If you pull the sapling early it comes out easily. If not, you really have to put some muscle in it and if you let it go any longer you may not be able to pull it out without help. The seeds of our sleep disturbances are the same. They start very small. For example, one client’s “seed” got planted because of her parent’s tendency to fight after the kids went to bed. Meanwhile, the kids are upstairs, all alone, hearing every word and more importantly feeling the energy of conflict and thinking, “I’d better stay awake in case anything bad happens.” That seed grew over time and continued to disturb her sleep long after she was grown, out of the house, and married with kids of her own. The birth of a child is another perfect example of a seed of disturbance. A harried and short-tempered mom came in saying that she hadn’t had a decent night’s sleep since her first child was born, and her oldest was in her early teens. The seed in that case was, “I’d better keep an ear open for any sounds from the baby because if I sleep deeply I might not hear if something happens or if she needs me.” One gentleman’s seed was a past affair that he’d been “losing sleep over” for years. His lack of sleep was his subconscious mind’s way of punishing him for that misjudgment. I had a client just last week whose belief of “I don’t have time to sleep”, even though she’s now retired, prevented her mind from being able to relax, let go and sleep. For children, it’s very often being exposed to age inappropriate scary movies, a nightmare or the fear of being alone. The seeds of sleep issues are always very interesting, and rarely what we consciously think is the cause of the problem. Stress and Anxiety More than half of the folks struggling with sleep are doing so because they’re stressed, anxious or depressed; all things that hypnosis can help with. And all these things winnow back to the class fear of “Not Good Enough”. People feel stressed because they think they’re not capable enough, not smart enough, not organized enough, not something enough to handle the challenges that life throws their way, in spite of the fact that they have successfully handled hundreds of challenges in the past. They’re anxious because they’re afraid they’re, “Not Good Enough” and that as a result, people won’t like them, will leave them, then they’ll be all alone and may not survive. Depression is the same thing. How can you feel good when you spend the bulk of your day judging yourself to not be as good as others? You simply can’t. I know many people believe that these issues run in families. I’m like this because my mother’s brother has anxiety. Those are behaviors that have been modeled, so it’s energetic as much as it is genetic. They are modeled thought patterns, belief patterns and habit patterns. I’m anxious because my mother was a worrier and her mother was a worrier and so on and so forth. OK, did that work for them? I don’t think so. “I’m this way because I have a chemical imbalance.” How did your chemicals get imbalanced? Did you know that every thought you think releases chemicals in your brain? Maybe your chemicals became imbalanced because your thoughts are imbalanced.

If you think about biting into a lemon you experience a physical response. A pucker, extra saliva, tightness in your jaw – all because of a chemical change in your brain. If you imagine biting into your favorite fruit, maybe you would feel differently, unless the lemon is your favorite fruit. A perfect demonstration that your thoughts control your chemistry. You change your thoughts, you change your chemistry. Your ancestry is not in control of your life, you are. Hypnosis for Insomnia So, how do we find the seed in order to pull it out? That’s the magic of hypnosis. Hypnosis is a conversation with the subconscious mind and because the subconscious mind holds our long-term memory, it can easily find the time before the sleep disturbance came in and remind the body of its natural ability to sleep. It can also fast forward from that time to the moment that the seed of disturbance came in and can literally clear the seed, releasing that interference, and return the body to its natural, healthy sleep patterns. It’s like going back in time and picking up that maple seed, and throwing it in the trash, so the sapling can never grow and become an unwanted weed in the garden of your mind. I know you’re probably thinking – that sounds too easy, but it is easy. Most people can work through their sleep issues in less than a handful of sessions. No expensive sleep studies or risk of getting addicted to or experiencing the many side effects of long-term prescription medications. If your insomnia is caused by something like sleep apnea, you may need to release some weight or require medical intervention to resolve your issue, but most sleep disturbances can be cleared with the help of the subconscious mind. So, if you’re struggling, why not end your nightmare of insomnia now. A good night’s sleep is the best gift you can give yourself, your family, your employer and fellow drivers. Tips for Healthy Sleep Here are some healthy sleep tips that may help you. In addition, I have two wonderful sleep CDs/MP3 on my web-site at www.mindmattershypnosis.com/shop. If that first line of action doesn’t do the trick then come in for a few sessions and we’ll clear what’s interfering with your sleep and get your life back on track. • Listen to white noise or relaxation CDs. • Avoid grains and sugars before bed. This will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep.

Later, when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep. • Have a high-protein snack several hours before bed. This can provide the L-tryptophan needed to produce melatonin and serotonin. • Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. Light in your room can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland's production of melatonin and serotonin. There should be as little light in the bathroom as possible if you get up in the middle of the night. • Wear an eye mask to block out light. • No TV right before bed especially the news. • Read something positive and inspirational. This will help you to relax. Don't read anything stimulating such as a mystery or suspense novel, as this may have the opposite effect. • Journaling. If you often lay in bed with your mind racing, write down what’s on your mind so your mind

knows that it’s been captured and doesn’t have to remember it all. • Get to bed before 11:00 pm. Our systems, particularly the adrenals, do a majority of their recharging or recovering during the hours of 11 pm and 1 am. • Check your bedroom for electro-magnetic fields (EMFs). These can disrupt the pineal gland and the production of melatonin and serotonin, and may have other negative effects as well. • Keep the temperature in the bedroom no higher than 70 degrees F. Many people keep their homes and particularly the upstairs bedrooms too hot. • Avoid caffeine. A recent study showed that in some people, caffeine is not metabolized efficiently and therefore they can feel the effects long after consuming it. • Avoid alcohol. Although alcohol will make people drowsy, the effect is short lived and people will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol will keep you from falling into the deeper stages of sleep, where the body does most of its healing. • Lose weight. Being overweight can increase the risk of sleep apnea, which will prevent a restful sleep. • Abstain from drinking fluids within 2 hours of going to bed. This will reduce the likelihood of needing to get up and go to the bathroom or at least minimize the frequency. • Take a hot bath, shower or sauna before bed. When body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, facilitating sleep.

• Remove the clock from view. It will only add to your worry when constantly staring at it. • Make certain you are exercising regularly. Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day can help you fall asleep. However, don't exercise too close to bedtime or it may keep you awake. Studies show exercising in the morning is the best if you can do it. • Establish a bedtime routine. This could include meditation, deep breathing, using aromatherapy or essential oils. The key is to find something that makes you feel relaxed, then repeat it each night to help you release the day's tensions. • Put your work away at least one hour (but preferably two or more) before bed. This will give your mind a chance to unwind so you can go to sleep feeling calm, not hyped up or anxious about tomorrow's deadlines. Low Carb Diet For Weight Loss? By Susan Yarett, ND

I

just can’t lose weight!” This is the statement I hear from so many patients, but there is a solution. The low carbohydrate diet may be just the thing to help people who say they have tried everything and still can’t seem to lose weight. Low Carbohydrate Diets Low carb diets typically range from 20-100 grams of carbohydrates per day. There are several categories of low carb diets. Net carbs less than 20 grams per day is considered a very low carb diet. A moderate, low carb diet would be 20-50 grams per day, and 50-100 grams of carbs per day is considered a liberal low carb diet. Which number to choose is very individualized because it depends on what a particular person’s goals are and their medical condition. For example, a person with diabetes may want to determine their net carbs per day based on blood insulin or blood glucose levels. Whatever your condition, it is best to check with your healthcare professional to determine if it is safe for you to be on any type of low carb diet, and if so, which one is right for you. A low carb diet emphasizes higher fat and moderate protein and reduces high carbohydrate foods such as grain (pasta, flour, bread, crackers, baked goods) and high starch vegetables such as potatoes and squash, legumes, and high carb fruit. Good fats include olives/olive oil, coconut oil, grass fed butter, raw nuts (especially macadamia), seed (black, sesame, pumpkin, cumin, hemp), avocados, omega-3 fats (krill, oil, sardines, anchovies), and raw cacao butter. Moderate amounts of grass fed meat, wild fish, organic chicken, pastured eggs and limited amounts of dairy are good sources of protein. Most vegetables especially broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale, arugula, spinach, collard greens, Swiss chard, sprouts, ginger, garlic, turmeric, raw onion, cucumber, tomatoes, mushrooms are relatively low in carbs. It is best to avoid high fructose containing foods such as high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which can be hidden in fruit drinks, tomato paste, canned foods, pancake syrups, jams and jellies, sweet and sour sauce, ketchup, relish, candy, and liquid medications such as cough syrup and pain relievers.

Intermittent Fasting Another helpful component to the lower carb diet and weight loss is intermittent fasting. This means including cycles of fasting and non-fasting. There are many ways to accomplish this. One way, in a 24-hour day, is to fast for 12-16 hours and limit eating to an 8-12 hour window. As an example, if you finish dinner at 8:30 PM and you want to fast for 14 hours, you don’t eat again until 10:00 AM the next morning. Our bodies prefer to burn sugar as its energy source, particularly if we are consuming a rich carbohydrate diet. But, on a low carb diet during the fasting cycle, glucose levels decrease and our bodies therefore have no choice but to begin to pull from the excess fat stored in the cells because it becomes the only source of energy available. In addition to eating a lower carb diet and fasting intermittently, exercise is also an integral part of the lifestyle changes necessary to effectively lose weight. Exercising during the fasting cycle further causes the body to pull energy not from glucose, but rather from the fat stored in the cells. In addition, burning fat leads to more insulin sensitivity and consequently more weight loss. In addition, there are a handful of things to watch out for which can potentially interfere with losing weight on a lower carb diet. Sometimes the carbs need to be adjusted because they are not low enough for a given individual. Being stressed all the time raises levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can increase hunger and cravings for unhealthy foods. When limiting carbs, it is also very important to replace them with nutritious foods. Treats, even if made with healthy ingredients, can cause problems. It is critical to eat more (healthy) fats when limiting carbs, however, eating too many nuts can cause calorie overload. Although dairy is a low carb food it can be very high in protein and excessive protein can raise insulin levels and cause excess fat to be stored. Susan Yarett, ND is a licensed naturopathic physician in Connecticut. She practices at Paragon Naturopathic Family Care in Stamford, CT and at Eclectic Naturopathic Medical Center in Newington, CT. She can be reached at dryarett@paragonnd.com. See ad on page 36.

With any type of low carb diet, it is important to understand the concept of “net carbs”. When looking at a packaged food label, the amount of net carbs (in grams) is calculated by subtracting the fiber content (in grams) from the total carbs (in grams). For instance, if a package of crackers lists the serving size as 4 crackers, and the total carbs is 13 grams, but the fiber content is 2 grams, then the total carbs is 11 grams for 4 crackers. When using fresh produce and other unpackaged foods, it is important to have a carb counter handy so you can figure out the net carb content of food that you are freshly preparing. In this fashion, net carbs per day can be determined.

Grand Gesture for Health By Ayelet Connell, PhD, PT, IMT,C

D

o you have a metabolic disorder? Do you have sugar handling problems? For many of us, we get stuck in the system—a traditional allopathic system, that is primarily about fixing acute problems, and very likely about the short-term result. But what about long term health, and actually healing from the metabolic disorder? Is there a way to improve our blood sugar on a constant and consistent basis? Absolutely! But this involves, what I like to call, a ‘Grand Gesture’. For us to make grand changes in our body, it requires big changes in our life. There are many ways to improve our health, and certainly shifting our diet is a big one. But in addition to making big dietary changes, there are other factors to consider as well, in particular, lifestyle changes to reduce stress, and also body work to improve the structural health of our body so that it ‘works’ better. As we all know by now, stress is a major contributor to disease, largely because it can cause inflammation in our body which is at the root cause of most illness, including metabolic disorders, auto-immune conditions, and more. In reality, it is completely impossible to live without stress in our lives, given our current climate in the US and in general, life stressors relating to family and friends and community and so on. I recently bought a magnet that really resonated with me. It read, “Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.” (Appar-

ently, an unknown author!) I truly believe that for most of us, we are not meant to create a life of seclusion. We are meant to be in our community and find peace within the boisterous space that occupies our life. Where does that leave us with the correlation between stress and inflammation? Well, it’s all about resilience… How high is our threshold to stress? Can we maintain our health while still living our lives? The answer to this has to do with our lifestyle and whether we can create an environment without low stress, but rather ‘healthy’ stress. This is where we get back to the concept of the ‘grand gesture’. What will it take to reduce inflammation in our body and generally promote greater health? Here are some suggestions on how to make this grand gesture. Consider the following categories: 1. Shift your diet to an anti-inflammatory diet: Eating foods that are healthy for you and avoiding foods that promote greater inflammation in the body. 2. Body work: By getting regular body work such as holistic physical therapy and manual therapy, you can restore structural health to your body which can help to reduce chronic and acute pain—this can help to increase our threshold to stress and also promote pain-free activity in our life. 3. Lifestyle changes: To increase your threshold to stress, such as meditation and mindfulness exercises, and regular daily movement. Anti-Inflammatory Diet: A Diet to Promote Health and Reduce Inflammation Knowing that inflammation is at the root of most illness today, it makes sense to eat a diet that is rich in foods that are non-inflammatory. Here is how to do it! • Go gluten-free! Gluten has been widely researched and show time and time again to induce inflammation in the body—this is a simple way to get started. • Avoid dairy. Dairy can be mucous producing and for many of us, we have respiratory issues and allergies throughout the year, or maybe we constantly get sick in the winter. By avoiding dairy, we can create an environment in our body that is less triggered during these times. • Avoid refined sugars. Processed/refined sugar is toxic. By avoiding refined sugar, we can promote our general health and also help to create a healthier sugar metabolism in our body. Also, by avoiding refined sugar, we can reduce pain.

• Eat natural sweeteners in moderation (raw honey, pure maple syrup, stevia, coconut sugar). Natural sweeteners like raw honey and pure maple syrup have many health benefits, but in high doses they can also affect our health. Sometimes, it is helpful to take a 2-4 week break entirely from all sweeteners to ‘re-calibrate’ our system and lessen our cravings. • Eat lots of fresh vegetables. Veggies are the most important part of our diet. In our imaginary plate, veggies should occupy 75%. They are rich in nutrients and enzymes that can help reduce inflammation in the body and help to heal from illness. • Eat fresh fruits daily but in moderation. Fruits are also filled with great stuff for our health, but they also carry with them natural sugar. By eating them daily but in moderation, we can avoid blood sugar spikes but still get the benefits. Also, keep in mind that drinking fruit juice can spike our blood sugar even higher because the juice is missing the fruit fiber. By eating the whole fruit, the fiber in the fruit slows our blood sugar down so that we get more of the benefits and less of the blood sugar challenges. • Drink a lot of water. The reality is that most of us are dehydrated to some degree. If our body does not get enough water, then we can’t heal optimally. It’s also helpful to note that often we experience headaches and other types of body challenges secondary to not drinking enough water. • Reduce grain in our diet—not just gluten grain but in general, the gluten-free grain as well. If we can reduce pasta and bread and other baked goods from our diet and try to eat more vegetables and natural protein, we can make huge changes in our health. • Eat natural protein. For most of us, being vegetarian would be very difficult. Not just because we crave meat, but also because it’s hard to get enough protein in our day when we don’t eat meat, fish and eggs. It requires a lot of planning and diet responsibility to be a healthy vegetarian. For the rest of us that choose to eat animal protein, it is incredibly important to make good choices with what type of meat to eat—specifically, grass-fed beef, organic/natural poultry, wild fish, natural eggs. Meat that is not grass-fed

is made from cows that are fed inflammatory grain for their primary diet. This can affect the meat that we eat and make the meat more inflammatory. The same goes with poultry. Non-organic/ natural poultry is given hormones and antibiotics in order to grow larger than normal—not ideal for our body! • Essential fats. Be sure to include in your daily diet lots of healthy fats such as wild fish, extra virgin olive oil, nuts and seeds, avocados, coconut, and so on. Our body needs essential fats to heal our tissues because our tissues are made of essential fats. But unfortunately they are called essential because our body doesn’t make them…we need to get them into our body through our diet.

The Secret for Living Disease and Stress Free By Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.

I

n today’s society, it is normal for older citizens to shows signs of multiple chronic diseases and a lower standard of living due to health problems as their life progresses. In America, statistics say that most of us will develop diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, cancer, depression, anxiety and chronic pain by mid-life age. Despite the expected denigration of health that comes with getting older, I am 84 years old and I am constantly amazing my peers and doctors that I am not looking or feeling my age yet. That is correct - I have been fortunate enough to stand among the few who are not a statistic of poor health and stress. Everyone always asks, ‘What is your secret?’ My secret is simple - I live in the practice of stress reduction and stress management. Stress management has helped me to have a life where I can have pain control without pain medication, no diseases that need medications, no side effects from prescribed drugs, decreased anxiety and freedom from depression, great sleep every night, spiritual purpose, and, of course, increased happiness and contentment. Over the past 45 years, myself and my colleagues have used only 5 techniques to bring about major reduction of diseases, chronic pain, anxiety and depression for myself and over 30,000 other people with a success rate of over 85%. Here are those techniques:

2. Transcutaneous Acupuncture, PEMF. According to Ronald Klatz, D.O., President of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, "DHEA is undeniably one of the most crucial predictive factors in diagnosing aging-related diseases." Indeed, DHEA levels are significant indicators of accelerated aging, atherosclerosis, cancer and reduced immune competence. For the past 20 years, I have used the same method to assist in rejuvenating the body’s ability to naturally increase its own DHEA levels: using the acupuncture technique called Stimulation of the Ring of Fire, using magnesium lotion daily, and a vitamin regimen that includes Vitamin C, MSM, Molybeneum and Beta 1,3 Glucan. This combination, working in correlation with your body’s own progesterone levels, will raise DHEA an average of 250% from baseline and has not been seen to raise DHEA above the normal range. 3. Sapphire enhanced AdrenoScalar™ therapy. Sapphire enhanced AdrenoScalar therapy appears to be the greatest single stress reducer. It has been shown to: reduce adrenomedullin over 50%, reduces inflammation up to 80%, reduces free radicals 40-50% within 3 hours and increases delta brain activity instantly, for immediate relaxation and stress reduction.

1. Cranial Electrical Stimulation. Cranial Electrical Stimulation is best done with the CES unit developed by Saul Liss. It was originally used for pain but I discovered it is far better for depression, anxiety and insomnia. It normalizes serotonin and raises beta endorphin.

4. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEFT) initially required electrical stimulation at 52 to 78 GHz at one billionth of a watt for 20 minutes. However, an alternative method was developed which uses a specific blend of essential oils and only takes 30 seconds, but has the same results. There are 5 neural circuits which PEFT specifically optimizes. These are the DDEA, Progesterone, AldosteExperience our new-age approach to Active Manual Medicine! rone, Calcitonin and Crystals circuits. Using only this method, we have shown 3.5% • We utilize a modern chiropractic regeneration of telomeres, the tips of DNA & rehabilitation approach with crucial for health and longevity, instead of fitness integration the usual 1% shrinkage that occurs with • Safe customized personal training aging, even among those with good health sessions for individuals of all ages & habits. The Shealy-Sorin Chakra Sweep activity levels with Dr. Lex or Dr. Brad PEMF is by far the best single treatment for diabetic neuropathy, as well as improving BOOK YOUR FREE CHIROPRACTIC CONSULTATON NOW AND circulation and local pain relief.

5. Biogenics Retraining. Biogenics is the self-regulation technique I developed for relaxation and stress management to reduce

anxiety and depression. It includes mental exercises to optimize relaxation, sensory feedback for control of sensations and pain, emotional balancing and attunement with the soul. Here are some of the techniques I have used for over 45 years to reduce stress and prevent disease in my body: • Be Here Now. Stay in present time. • Belief in Self. Bio-feedback “proves” to the individual that the mind influences body, and as such, what you believe will greatly influence your health and stress levels.

So, in answer to the question, “What is your secret?” This is my answer: I have spent over half of my life practicing ancient methods of natural and holistic healing, while working to reduce my stress levels by living in mindfulness and acceptance and wholeness. That is my secret, and now it is yours too. Finding the Courage to Grow

By Kimberly Ruggiero, MA “Wholeness for humans depends on their ability to own their own shadow.” -Carl Jung

I

have always been serious minded and practical. People who know me might say I’m conservative, conventional or downright square. Growing up in Catholic school, studying science in college, and working a corporate job prepared me for a stable course, and I didn’t stray far from it. That’s why it shocked my family a few months ago when I announced I was going to a festival in the Nevada desert called “Burning Man”. “You are a 54-year-old suburban mom for God’s sake!” “There will be drugs and sex.” “People are naked!” “That’s not who you are!” It’s all true. There are drugs and sex at this crazy festival of radical inclusion and self-expression. Some people are naked but most wear costumes. There is also a leave no trace policy, no consumerism and a major emphasis on community participation including gifting without expectation.

32

Natural Nutmeg - November/December 2017

Burning Man is an experiment in human consciousness; a pop-up city of 70,000 representing all ages and all countries. People respect and care for each other like family, but they have to be self-reliant. Burning Man is like going to the moon for a week and bringing everything you need to survive in sweltering heat or freezing cold temperatures. It offers the good, bad and ugly things in life, right there for the taking. Being the sturdy New Englander I am, I almost didn’t go. It turned out to be both terrifying and the most mind-expanding experience of my life. But let’s be real. I’m not a big fan of sleeping in a tent or using a Port-a-Potty. After two and a half decades of marriage and child rearing, trust me, I had built a pretty comfortable zone. But several years ago, after turning 50, I couldn’t deny the part of me that needed to grow and challenge hardened beliefs about the way the world worked. I began a mission to do things outside my comfort zone. I went back to school, trained in Consciousness Studies and started asking the Big Question: Who am I really? I had to push to my edges and experiment.

I’d like to say it was easy; that trying new things was effortless, but the fact was I had serious work to do. A painful chronic illness in my early forties had taken a toll on my confidence. I eventually conquered the disease but I was always worried about my limitations. One thing I took away from that time was a little tool I found to handle disabling pain; mindfulness meditation. If I had not learned to work with my fear and deal with my insides all those years ago, I might still be that serious minded, practical (and afraid) person. I’d just be older. Certainly, I would NEVER have considered going to “Burning Man”. Admittedly, I did stay in a sober camp and did not take drugs or go naked, but I was able to overcome my resistance to being in such a harsh, foreign environment, with people seemingly out of the Star Wars Cantina Bar and I even pulled together some weird costumes to participate. I allowed myself to be the kind of woman who would go to “Burning Man”. So, what did I learn about myself? In working with a recent mindfulness meditation class, I had my first-time students remain silent for two minutes and then give feedback on the experience. Here are some comments: “Uncomfortable.” “Couldn’t sit still.” “Coming out of my skin.” There is clearly difficulty in simply being. Our minds are conditioned to follow predetermined pathways and if we try to alter that momentum the discomfort can be

severe. That’s why many spend a lifetime in the small zone of what’s comfortable even though the reality is terribly unsatisfying. Being still to see who you really are takes courage. That’s why, “Go to your room!” is punishment for children. But, by doing the meditation practice, you can see yourself as you actually are; not as others need you to be. As I learn to accept all my parts, the good, bad and ugly, space is opening new pathways in my small conditioned mind. I am learning to experience life directly and be curious instead of judgmental. Engaging life with “beginners mind” I am having more fun than I have ever had. Even as a child.

Natural Nutmeg Readers!

Burning man was really just a metaphor for all the things I’ve been afraid to try. Meditation has been the life-changing tool that allowed me to see my obstacles more clearly and minimize their influence. Einstein said, “You can’t solve a problem from the same level of consciousness that created it.” If that’s true, then shifting consciousness is the only way to find the courage to really grow.

Chronic Inflammation, Pain & Disease: Combating Them Naturally Part 2 By J. Erika Dworkin, Certified Lifestyle Educator Whole-body inflammation refers to chronic, imperceptible, low-level inflammation...[O] ver time this kind of inflammation sets the foundation for many serious, age-related diseases including heart disease, cancer and neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Recent evidence indicates that whole-body inflammation may also contribute to psychological disorders, especially depression… The extent of this chronic inflammation is influenced by genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, too much stress, and exposure to environmental toxins...Diet has a huge impact so much so that I believe that most people in our part of the world go through life in a pro-inflammatory state as a result of what they eat. - Andrew Weil, MD - drweil.com

A

re you fed up with chronic pain or discomfort? What healthy steps are you willing to take to combat it and the chronic inflammation (CI) that underlies it? Part 1 of this two-part article explained how CI develops and its role in pain and chronic disease. It emphasized that preventing and reducing CI first and foremost requires: (1) following an anti-inflammatory, alkalizing diet, (2) minimizing the permeability of the intestinal walls, and (3) removing excess toxins from the body

on a daily basis. Below is a discussion of various dietary supplements, alphabetized for easy reference, that can begin to address the CI that is underlying your chronic health condition or disease. Aloe Vera: This versatile plant contains 75 potentially active constituents, including vitamins (e.g, beta-carotene, C and E), enzymes, minerals, fatty acids, sugars, lignins, salicylic acids, and amino acids. Its juice and gel forms can be used internally or topically to address various types of inflammation due to the plant’s antifungal, antibacterial, analgesic, antiviral, and antioxidant properties. While some experts maintain that more clinical studies are warranted, aloe has been shown in clinical practice to aid certain conditions, such as: (1) digestive disorders (acid reflux/GERD, constipation, diarrhea, candida, peptic ulcers, NSAID damage); (2) kidney stones (anthraquinones bind calcium to reduce the growth rate of urinary crystals); (3) osteoarthritis and other non-cancer chronic pain; and (4) high blood sugar/types 1 and 2 diabetes. Astaxanthin: Carotenes (e.g., beta-carotene, lycopene) and xanthopylls (e.g., astaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin), the two types of antioxidant carotenoids found in plants, algae, and microorganisms, are required in the human diet. While human scientific evidence is somewhat limited, pinkish-colored astaxanthin (found in salmon and krill) is considered to have the capacity to: (1) combat inflammation, oxidative stress, and mental/ physical fatigue; (2) support eye, skin, and cardiovascular health (including protection against atherosclerosis); (3) improve exercise performance and fight muscle fatigue; and (4) clean cells, preserve

their membranes, and protect them from UV damage. The average daily recommended dose is 6-8mg. Curcumin: A polyphenol extracted from turmeric, this member of the ginger family has been used in traditional Indian medicine for more than 3000 years. Studies have shown that this potent antioxidant combats inflammation, bacteria (including H. pylori), fungus/yeast, and viruses. It targets a wide range of diseases, including arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer, (e.g., tumors, breast and cervical cancers). One professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics noted that curcumin “was just as potent at killing tumor cells in the lab as any experimental drug” she had seen from pharmaceutical companies. Otherwise difficult to absorb, curcumin is best taken when incorporated into an absorption-enhancing drug delivery system. High doses of regular or 95% standardized turmeric have demonstrated in clinical practice to potentially cause diarrhea and mild nausea in those with sensitive digestive systems. Fish Oil (EPA/DHA): High quality fish oil, in the right dose and ratio to omega-6 fatty acids, is a critical part of every nutritional supplement regimen. The Journal of the American College of Nutrition has reported that EPA and DHA, two of the key omega-3 essential fatty acids in the oil of fatty fish, “may play an important role in the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease, hypertension, arthritis, other inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, and cancer.” In one 2016 review of research on DHA and brain development and function, the writers stated that their findings suggest “a role of DHA in cognitive decline and in relation to major psychiatric disorders.”

Flavonoids: These antioxidant plant pigments are more effective against a wider range of oxidants than vitamins C, E, betacarotene, selenium, and zinc. With their antiinflammatory, antiallergenic, antiviral, and anticancer properties, it is possible to select among the 8,000+ flavonoid compounds to target specific conditions. While many flavonoids provide full-body antioxidant protection (i.e., are systemic antioxidants – SAs), experts recommend in particular doses: (1) Pine Bark/Grape Seed Extract (Min 95% OPCs) – SA; especially for lungs, varicose veins, heart, and healthy blood sugar levels; 100mg/day was shown to reduce CRP in osteoarthritic study subjects; especially for those under age 50; (2) Green Tea Extract (Min 60-70% Polyphenols) – SA; as potentially the best protection against cancer and cholesterol damage; ideal as a daily detoxifier; (3) Milk Thistle Extract (Min 70% Silymarin) – especially supports the liver and skin; (4) Bilberry Extract (Min 25% Anthocyanidins) – for the eyes; (5) Hawthorn Berry Extract (Min 10% Proanthocyanidins) – for heart disease and hypertension; (6) Ginkgo Biloba (Min 24% Ginkgo Flavonglycosides) – for the brain; especially for those over age 50 who are not hypertensive. Ginger: The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-aging properties of ginger can render it highly supportive for: (1) joint degeneration (osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis) and muscle pain (especially during exercise when consumed beforehand); (2) digestive ailments (indigestion/nausea/vomiting, constipation, ulcers, esophagitis); (3) diabetes; (4) cancer prevention; (5) heart disease; (6) neurodegenerative diseases; and (7) hepatitis. Trans-Resveratrol: This non-flavonoid polyphenol is found in various amounts in red wine (1 mg per glass), red grape skins, grape seeds, the roots of Japanese knotweed, dark chocolate/cacao powder, peanuts, and mulberry skins. In 2011, the findings of the 2010 Resveratrol Conference in Denmark were published to examine all scientific evidence (nearly 3,700 published studies) supporting the plant chemical’s ability to prevent disease. The report’s experts identified 12 mechanisms by which resveratrol delays aging and combats five degenerative diseases that are the leading causes of death in the United States: heart disease; stroke; cancer; Alzheimer’s disease; and diabetes. More recent studies clarify and amplify their conclusions.

cell proliferation, apoptosis (programmed cell death), and angiogenesis (cancerrelated blood vessel formation), and inhibits metastasis; (6) regulates DNA damage; (7) regulates foreign molecule and toxin metabolism; (8) regulates estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activity; and (10) stimulates bone formation. While anti-inflammatory supplements can generally be used safely in a preventive regimen, it is best to seek the advice of an expert in holistic medicine when attempting to change the course of disease. Practical Divine Wisdom from Robin Clare

By Robin Clare ear Robin: I have a wonderful job, a family that needs me, I contribute my time and resources to community and global concerns and YET, I feel like there must be something more to this life – like some grand purpose that I am not fulfilling. Why do I still feel so unproductive even though my life is very full? I even feel guilty writing to you. - Randy from CT.

D

Dear Randy: When you feel guilty, you typically are unhappy because you think that you have done something wrong - or have failed to do something which you should have done. Perhaps the challenge is compounded by having to remember to not feel guilty about feeling guilty. In fact, you may find it surprising instead that I would invite you to embrace the gift of guilt! The gift of guilt reminds us to ask ourselves if how we are spending our time is where we truly want or need to be. I say embrace your guilt, for it has brought you to a place where you can seek and find answers. My work with clients and students is based on a single premise, “When you are living your Divine Purpose, you will fulfill your Soul’s Destiny.” Through my own struggle with, “Am I doing enough?”, I have come to understand that there are two distinct - yet united - concepts living within that single premise. Please allow me to clarify these for you. First, you may ask: “Is one’s Divine Purpose the same as one’s Life Purpose?” The answer is yes and no. “Purpose” will always have a component dedicated to serving others. “Divine Purpose” is about service to others in alignment with Divine Principles. This alignment is not about how you are serving but rather that you serve with an intention to serve with Kindness, Compassion and Integrity.

The second important concept to define is “Soul’s Destiny”. Up until quite recently, I thought destiny was a destination. Then I came to understand that Soul’s Destiny refers to an unlocking of your Divine Right to receive gifts from the Divine. The gifts shared by the Divine are Love, Peace, Joy and Abundance. Putting it all together, when you serve others with Kindness, Compassion and Integrity (Divine Purpose), you will be rewarded with a life filled with Love, Peace, Joy and Abundance (Soul’s Destiny). Randy, I would ask you to go back and examine with honesty how you are serving others - and in peeling back the layers you will undoubtedly discover how you are being rewarded for your service. When you inevitably find that your life does reflect Divine Purpose, then I would ask you to take a reflective moment for self-acceptance and appreciation. On the other hand, if your honest self-assessment still leaves you with a sense of falling short and still feeling frustrated, I would recommend that you start to pay attention to not only what you do for others but also to your attitude while you are doing it. Once you start to diary these things, you will automatically develop an “attitude of gratitude” for the opportunity to serve others...and you will be on the path to alignment with the Divine. What you focus on expands. Therefore, I invite you to focus on all the positive aspects of your life of

service - and don’t strive to forget feeling guilty for not living your perceived “grand” purpose, embrace it with appreciation for providing you with the impetus for opening your door to real self-discovery. “It is absolutely possible to have it all – a life deeply engaged in the energies of the Divine, while creating and living a life that embraces family, friends and service to humanity!” These are the words that grace the back cover of my second book, The Divine Keys. More than ever, I believe that is achievable for us all! In love and light, Robin If you would like to submit a question to be answered by Robin in an upcoming publication, please send your question in an email to info@clare-ity.com. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

What Does Every Woman Want?

M

any years ago a childhood friend of mine, due to a gambling addiction, got into a difficult situation involving some very significant debts. One day he shared with me that the organized crime group involved had threatened to break every bone in his body—or worse—if he did not pay up. He said when he told them he had no funds available and asked if he could repay the debt in some other way he was told that if he married the crime lord’s daughter they would let him off.

down the middle with half being the professional holding a black purse and the other half, the mommy, holding her daughter’s hand. It doesn’t take an art therapist to see who is smiling and who is frowning and which one her heart desires to be. So do not wait for a life threatening illness to give you permission to go home and be with your child. I will also add that if the desire of others imposes the life of a homemaker upon you and you want to be a lawyer or opera singer, do what makes you happy.

He said the offer was made because, “she was an ugly witch you could smell a mile away.” The problem was that, unbeknownst to the underworld characters involved, my friend was already married. He said he felt there was no hope for him, and his addiction would cost him his life. At this point I volunteered to marry the witch and save him. He argued, but I persisted. To make a long story short, the marriage was arranged and a few weeks later the witch and I were wed at a big blast in a well known New York Hotel.

If you have twin sisters—one of whom always strives to please her parents, make everyone happy by doing whatever they want and be a good girl who internalizes anger—while her sister is a little devil who drives everyone nuts and expresses her feelings, guess who is more likely to develop breast cancer, autoimmune diseases and more. Of course everyone answers the good girl, and studies show you are correct.

I did the best I could to put on a pleasant face for the evening but as it grew late I told my bride I needed to go to our hotel room and get some rest and she agreed to come with me. When we got to the room I went into the bathroom to catch my breath and try to figure out how I was going to manage to just get through the night—let alone the years that lay ahead of us. After spending as much time as I could in hiding I stepped out of the bathroom to find a beautiful woman sitting on the edge of the bed. “Where’s my wife?” I asked. “It’s me. Now that you are my husband I can reveal to you that a spell was cast upon me. I am a beautiful woman for twelve hours and a witch for twelve hours. Now that you are my husband my schedule is your choice. I can be beautiful during the day and impress the neighbors or at night for your pleasure. Tell me what you would prefer.” I knew from my mother’s wisdom that there was only one correct answer and I shared it with her, “Do what will make you happy.” She answered, “You have freed me from the spell. I can be beautiful twenty four hours a day now.” And she has for over fifty years. What does every woman want? A life of her own! It is vital for women who want to remain healthy to do what feels right so that it is not an intellectual decision as to whether you have a career or become a housewife. I have a drawing by a woman entitled, “Will the real me please stand up.” She drew a picture of herself split 42

Relationships are work because they relate to creating a third entity and are not about personal benefits. How to decide what to do relates to your health. If the relationship is affecting your health then I would say to eliminate it and love from a distance. However, if your health is not at risk then ask yourself how could love resolve this dilemma? Love is a weapon I recommend. You can kill with kindness, torment with tenderness and become blind to faults, with love. So construct your life out of the bricks of love but never forget to use humor as the cement that helps to hold the bricks together. I will also prescribe a dog or cat for you and do not ever let the child in you die. They will create healing relationships and teach you to live in the moment. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month 1:30-3:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge.
