Healthy School Lunch Ideas

By Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo, PhD

S

eptember is a great month to think about healthy school lunch options. In some schools, children are required to eat the food provided in the cafeteria. In these instances, the best solution is to educate our children on healthier choices. For this lesson to be relevant to our children, it is helpful to relate it specifically to them. It is also helpful to make it fun! Many school districts have the cafeteria food calendar accessible online, which makes it easy to review the options with your children to help them understand what is good to eat and what will make them feel sluggish.

Unhealthy Foods to Avoid When thinking of how to prepare a healthy lunch for our children, there are some general criteria to consider. Ideally, the food we provide will help them feel more energetic during the day. This will help them think more clearly and perform better in the classroom. Certain foods are inflammatory, which means that when we eat them, they affect us in a negative way. These types of foods can make us feel lethargic. Here are some foods that should be avoided when preparing lunches for our children or helping them choose cafeteria lunch options: 1. Gluten: Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, rye, barley, and often in oat as well. Commonly, gluten is in pasta, bread, cakes cookies, soy sauce, and crackers. There are so many substitutes that are widely available at most supermarkets today. Some examples are substitutes for sandwich bread, pasta (in all types of shapes),

crackers, and soy sauce. Locally, there are several bakeries that carry gluten free baked goods, including: Dee’s One Smart Cookie (Glastonbury), Nature’s Grocer (Vernon), The Sweet Beet (Granby), Cake Gypsy (Canton), and Healthy Harvest (Meriden). Sometimes, school cafeterias serve tacos for lunch; tacos are typically made out of corn flour and are usually gluten-free. 2. Refined Sugar: The negative effects of refined sugar on the body are extensive. It can affect the long-term health of the brain, digestive system, and immune system. The rise in childhood diabetes has been correlated with an overall increase in sugar intake. There are multiple good options for substitutions, including raw honey, pure maple syrup, stevia, palm and coconut sugar. Incorporating fresh fruit in school lunches gives children something sweet without the refined sugar, and will help them feel energetic. 3. Processed Foods and Preservatives: A good rule of thumb is to avoid eating anything that is not natural. Processed foods and preservatives are filled with chemicals that can alter health significantly and affect the way we feel. Trying to maintain a diet of natural foods is a good first step to health.

Healthy Lunch Ideas When preparing school lunches, it’s helpful to incorporate foods that are not too messy but still fun. Here are some ideas:

1. Sandwiches on gluten-free bread or gluten-free rolls (Crown Supermarket in West Hartford carries Katz gluten free rolls that are delicious). Some sample sandwich ideas: Sunbutter (a peanut butter substitute made out of sunflower seeds) and jelly (Polaner’s All Fruit and Bionature organic jams are sweet ened with fruit instead of refined sugar); turkey and cheese; chicken salad. 2. Carrot sticks or cucumber sticks with hummus or with honey mustard dressing (kids love dressings—you can make them from scratch with healthy ingredients or buy an organic version that has no refined sugars). 3. Rice crackers and chicken salad. 4. Apple slices and Sunbutter. 5. Fresh fruit: organic apple, orange, grapes, etc. 6. Package of Nori (roasted seaweed snack). 7. Olives and pickles. 8. Gluten-free pasta salad with chunks of chicken. 9. Yogurt with fruit and nuts. 10. Turkey roll with honey mustard. 11.Chunky soups, stews and chili for cold weather. You just need a good thermos.) 12. Gluten-free zucchini bread. 13. Nuts and seeds (avoid peanuts because most schools are peanut free zones and peanuts can be inflammatory)—you can also make your own homemade trail mix with healthy nuts and dried fruit! 14. Organic popcorn. 15. Wraps using brown-rice tortillas—can include chicken salad or turkey and cheese or hummus and veggies. 16. Roasted sweet potato chunks (peel/cube sweet potatoes and roast in oil and sea salt and let cool) 17. Leftovers from dinner!

Gluten-Free Zucchini Muffins Muffins are a great way to give kids some healthy ingredients. Here is an easy recipe for gluten-free zucchini muffins that are moist and delicious. Ingredients: • 2 cups all purpose gluten-free flour (can use Bob’s Red Mill All Purpose Gluten-Free Flour or make your own—see below for all purpose gluten-free flour mix ratio) • 1 Tbs baking powder • 1 tsp baking soda • ¾ tsp xanthum gum • ¼ tsp sea salt • 2 eggs, beaten (can substitute with egg replacer or 2 Tbs chia seeds plus 6 Tbs water—let sit on counter for 10-15 minutes until gel-like) • ½ cup olive oil (or other) • ½ cup rice milk (or other) • 2/3 cup maple syrup (can substitute with palm sugar) • 1 tsp vanilla extract • ½ cup mashed banana • 1 cup shredded zucchini, drained/squeezed Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit 2. Grease muffin tin or insert paper muffin holders 3. Mix all dry ingredients (not zucchini yet)

4. Mix all liquid ingredients separately (including mashed banana) 5. Pour liquid mixture into dry mixture and mix well 6. Fold in zucchini 7. Using ice cream scooper or large spoon, add muffin batter into muffin tin 8. Bake at 350 for 18-22 minutes until lightly golden brown on top 9. Enjoy!

Gluten-free All Purpose Flour Mix:

[This recipe is from Annalise Roberts’s “Gluten Free Baking Classics”] • 2 cups brown rice flour • 2/3 cup potato starch • 1/3 cup tapioca starch

Chicken Salad Chicken salad is packed with protein. Mix the following ingredients to make a delicious chicken salad that can be eaten with corn chips, or spread on a brown-rice tortilla or gluten-free bread. Add lettuce and tomato. You may need to alter the amounts of ingredients to meet your flavor preference. Be sure to taste test along the way! Ingredients: • 2 cups shredded/chopped chicken meat from roasted chicken: Roast chicken with lemon wedges inside cavity and lather chicken with olive oil, sea salt, pepper, parsley, thyme, and paprika. (Can use baked chicken breast instead, but it’s not as flavorful.) • ¼ cup finely chopped celery • ¼ cup finely chopped carrots • ½ tsp sea salt • ¼ tsp pepper

• ½ tsp parsley • ¼ cup mayonnaise • Juice of ½ lemon

Have Fun! Changes can be challenging. It is helpful to make these changes throughout the home, and not just single out the children’s lunch boxes. Have fun and include your children in the process whenever possible. BERNIE

I

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Loss ~ Pain ~ and Gain.

recently had another book published. It is written as a children’s book but is for all ages because we are all children who experience loss at some time in our lives. The book, entitled “Buddy’s Candle,” is about what I learned that helped me heal the pain, grief and losses in my life. It’s not easy when your parents die and you are no longer someone’s child. It’s not easy to be a surgeon and see all the suffering and pain you cannot cure and your medical information doesn’t prepare you for. What we all need is to be educated about ourselves, other people, life and its difficulties. When all you know how to do is bury the pain or numb and distract yourself from it, the result damages yourself and your body. This is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. What we need to do is express our pain, relieving our bodies and minds of the burden of these stored wounds. I kept a journal years ago when I was doing surgery. One day I forgot to hide it from the family and my wife found it. She told me she noticed that there was nothing funny in it. My response was that my life isn’t funny. She, then, proceeded to re-tell me jokes I told the family about things that had happened in the hospital that never made it into my journal. What we all need to do is be sure and make notes about the good things that happen and put them in our journals to store them in our hearts’ treasure chests along with the bad. One of my favorite movies, Harold and Maude, illustrates the triumph of hope over morbidity. Ruth Gordon plays a soon-to-be 80-year-old woman named Maude, optimistic about life, and Bud Cort plays a college student, Harold, fixated with death. Despite her idealistic outlook, Maude commits suicide at age 80. Soon after, you see Harold’s car, a hearse, go over a cliff. The assumption is that Harold, because of his infatuation with death and dying, has committed suicide as well; however, the next scene shows him walking away playing his banjo. What we glean from that scene is that even Harold, a morbid pessimist, was able to overcome having death as his life’s primary focus. This movie is about

hope and living, even in the face of despondence or despair. As Gordon says, “Give me an L, give me an I, give me a V, give me an E; LIVE, otherwise you’ve got nothing to talk about in the locker room.” For me, that is the essence of life. When we get back to living in the moment, we heal our lives. Children and animals do it instinctively. An X-ray of our son Keith’s leg at age 7 showed what appeared to be a malignant bone tumor. I was, appropriately, depressed and expected the family to be, likewise. Keith came to me the next day and said, “Dad, can I talk to you for a minute? You’re handling this poorly.” In essence, that’s the message behind my book. Do you think that your loved ones, be they people or pets, judge how much you love them by watching to see how long you will be miserable and overwhelmed with grief after they die? I think they, instead, look to see if you continue to enjoy life and live as they would want you to live. When they see that you can smile and laugh again, they will know they did a good job teaching you about life and that the only thing which is immortal and of permanence is love. The essence of “Buddy’s Candle” is this: you should not put out your loved ones’ celestial candle with your never-ending tears and despair. That is not their wish, and that is a poor way to deal with loss. Any child, cat or dog can tell you that.

Alchemy Hypnotherapy… Cathartic, Transformational, Life Changing

A

re you living your best life? Do you have a job that you love, a lover that you adore, and a life filled with prosperity on an emotional, financial, and spiritual level? Do passion, joy, and serenity elude you in some areas of your life? Alchemy Hypnotherapy can work with a quickness and a grace that will leave you delighted...and changed dramatically. What is Alchemy Past Life Regression? Compared to other healing arts, Alchemy has an extremely powerful effect. The energy is easy to integrate and there are no side effects. The healing, while profound during the session, generally continues for several days as a client delightedly adjusts to the new healthy perspective. It is not uncommon to feel a sense of wonderment and satisfaction as “pieces of understanding” seem to slide into place, completing a puzzle that has long remained incomplete. There can be a joyous sense of release as burdens are lifted and obstacles cleared almost without effort. Alchemy Past Life Regression is a timehonored therapy with a new dimensional perspective. The client is brought back to the cause of the problem so it can be completely resolved at a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. Past and present issues are healed on an ethereal plane where a client meets spirit guides that assist with the healing. Sometimes the problem goes further back, and past life regression therapy includes working with a recurring issue that appears to be from a past life. Obsessive thoughts about cleanliness may come from a death in dirt. Depression may come from a hopeless situation of poverty or slavery. As the soul returns to life over and over, the traumatic past life memories are re-created or re-remembered in our current life often making little sense, and keeping us from living peaceful lives. How does Alchemy Hypnotherapy differ from traditional hypnosis? Alchemy Hypnotherapy utilizes hypnosis coupled with the art of alchemy to facilitate a client’s journey into their own inner world. That inner world contains personal teachers and guides to assist in understanding the issues and facilitate healing on an ethereal plane. The possibilities are limitless. Emotions can be expressed, questions asked and answered.

Relationships in the current lifetime can be improved and healed when honest communication happens on an ethereal plane. It is possible to heal relationships with ones who have passed over and often a client leaves with an understanding of belief systems that no longer serve them, coupled with a willingness to leave them behind. Personal belief systems are the root of the personality and when a part of your life isn’t working for you, you have the power to change it. By deliberately intending what you want in your life, you do not open yourself up to others influences as much. Taking charge of your life is exhilarating and is possibly the most creative act one can perform; the act of giving yourself total freedom. Victims of trauma, sexual abuse, and family of origin issues can benefit from Alchemy Hypnotherapy when finally being able to find their voice. On an ethereal level, supported by guides and teachers when appropriate, a client can speak his/her truth, finally confronting the abuser, hearing the apologies or explanations and choosing to reject or accept them as a dialogue ensues. This conversation often has the effect of immediately clearing lifelong issues with feeling guilty for standing up for his/her rights or the simple act of saying “No”. This process allows the client to release shame and guilt associated with the trauma. It is very powerful to demand the abuser hear a victim’s pain and to feel the power of choice that was denied at the time of the abuse. Clients find it very cathartic to speak their truth and pain and then allow forgiveness or

choose to deny. He/she finally has the ability to choose the actions after being powerless at the time of impact.

What is a preconception contract? A preconception contract is an agreement that we make with our higher self prior to this incarnation. Some contracts are believed to include dying proclamations such as “I will never fall in love” again after being betrayed by a lover. These “proclamations may be the reason for issues in the current lifetime. It is often found that a client can go back to that point, or the point a preconception contract was drafted and change parts. If the “area” you want to change is not something that will alter your life purpose it is often possible to change that particular area. Keeping Your Mind Sharp As You Age

By Dana LaPointe, ND

A

s we age, we’re prone to mental decline in the form of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Being proactive in retaining the cognitive abilities you currently have can go a long way toward mental health and mental stability in later life.

Preventing Age-Related Cognitive Decline

Several areas should be prioritized in order to prevent cognitive decline, including proper diet, water intake, getting enough sleep, staying physically, mentally and socially active, and avoiding neurotoxins. Let’s look at these to understand exactly what we can do to support our nervous system and prevent memory deficits as we age. Diet: To keep the brain functioning at its maximum potential, increase consumption of the following foods: • Colorful, high-antioxidant fruits like blueberries and pomegranates protect the brain against oxidative stress and may improve learning capacity and motor skills, reducing the effects of age-related dementia and Alzheimer’s. • Nuts and seeds are high in vitamin E, which staves off age-related cognitive decline. Eat an ounce of fresh nuts (walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews), or seeds (flax, sunflower or sesame) each day; or a tablespoon of pure, unhydrogenated seed and nut butter. • Wild-caught, cold-water fishes: sardines, herring, salmon, tuna, trout, and halibut are high in omega-3s, which support brain function and neurogenesis (the body’s ability to generate nerves). • Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat, which helps to lower high blood pressure (a risk factor for cognitive decline), and also reduces risk of stroke. • Freshly brewed green tea, hot or iced, contains the antioxidant known as catechine, which aids in blood flow. Its modest amount of caffeine can enhance memory, focus, and mood. Two cups a day will be enough for these benefits. • Dark chocolate contains caffeine and helps improve mood. Half an ounce a day will do it. Hydration: Concentration, alertness, short and long-term recall, eye-hand coordination, ability to do math, and other cognitive abilities have been shown to be altered with even mild dehydration in 12

adults. On a daily basis, generally the longest we go without water is during sleep; one of the easiest and best habits to start on the path to optimal aging is to rehydrate with two full glasses of water first thing every morning. Sleep: Sleep-deprivation is rampant in our culture. Regardless of age, not getting enough sleep affects brain function; getting older impacts this even more. Sleep efficiency declines with age, so the amount of sleep that worked fine in youth may not be enough for seniors. In a recent study published in the journal SLEEP, researchers at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore found a relationship between shorter sleep and a faster rate of cognitive decline and brain shrinkage. Since sleep duration is harder to control in the elderly, younger folks should ensure they aren’t consistently burning the candle at both ends. Physical Activity: Exercise releases endorphins (our feel-good brain chemicals) associated with improved mood, mood stability, the experience of happiness, and enhanced mental processing. There’s an interesting relationship between physical activity and sleep, too; when you exercise, it’s easier to sleep at night. Mental Activity: Use it or lose it! This is particularly true with memory and cognition. Neuro-plasticity is the ability of brain cells and circuits to change or increase connections in response to new activities, and is enhanced by any activity that requires new skills, challenges us, and requires focused attention or mind-body coordination (i.e.: ballroom dancing as opposed to simply walking on a treadmill). Learning any new activity has the potential to enhance neuroplasticity. Consider learning to play a musical instrument, taking up a new hobby, or doing crosswords or Sudoku. The Social Network: Staying active can greatly increase brain function and quality of life. Engaging in any activity that gives a sense of accomplishment boosts serotonin. Reaching goals is associated with the release of dopamine, nature’s ‘energy’ molecule. Being socially-involved, especially when we’re helping others, or feeling trust in those around us, triggers the release of oxytocin. To boost these, consider volunteering for a cause you support, teaching a skill you’ve mastered, and surrounding yourself with positive, trustworthy, goal-oriented people.

Avoiding Neurotoxins: A neurotoxin is any chemical that adversely affects nerve development and/or function. Nerves are more susceptible to toxins than other tissues because of their large surface area. The high fat content of nerve tissue retains fat-soluble toxins and high blood flow to the brain increases effective toxin exposure. And because neurons persist throughout an individual’s lifetime, they’re more at risk for damage from multiple exposures. To counteract this, the nervous system has a built-in mechanism, the blood brain barrier (or BBB), designed to protect it from internal and external assaults. The BBB is a network of protective nerve cells that surrounds the capillaries in the brain, effectively isolating the brain from potential toxins which circulate in the blood. We can limit our exposure to many potent neurotoxins with a bit of education about the most common sources (heavy metals, pesticides, alcohol, artificial sweeteners), along with some simple tips in each case. Heavy metals, such as lead, mercury and aluminum, cross the BBB. Your doctor can order tests to determine your body’s metal burden.

• Lead interferes with interneuron signaling and is also a direct cause of nerve cell death. A major source of lead exposure is from homes and outdoor structures built prior to 1978, (when lead was banned from paint), and old lead-soldered plumbing. Carrots, beets and other veggies grown in contaminated soil can contain lead. Anyone gardening around such old structures should call their local university’s Cooperative Extension office to have their soil tested for lead. At UConn, it’ll cost less than $10. • Mercury exposure often comes from eating fish that are high on the food chain, so it’s best to limit consumption of larger fishes like tuna and swordfish. Be sure to obtain your supplemental fish oils from companies that source from smaller fishes like sardine and herring, and that are scrupulous about testing each batch for contamination. • Aluminum inhibits the function of the BBB, compromising its very ability to keep out other toxins. Aluminum exposure is associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Daily exposure to aluminum comes in the form of aluminum cookware, antacids and deodorants, so look for those that are aluminum free. Those needing vaccines or parenteral nutrition (IV solutions routinely given in hospitals) should request those without mercury or aluminum-containing additives.

Exposure to pesticides is associated with cognitive decline as well; another reason to eat organic foods as much as possible. Alcohol consumption has both transient and lasting consequences. Some of the lasting effects include reduced neurogenesis, widespread brain atrophy, and brain inflammation. Widely known as being responsible for fetal alcohol syndrome in the newborns of alcoholic mothers, alcohol can have profound affects on the fully mature brain as well. Overindulgence can cause a marked increase in concentrations of cholesterol and saturated fat in the makeup of cell membranes, and since the cell membrane is responsible for much of the signaling of what is allowed in and out of a cell, this is cause for great concern, especially since the neurons we have now will be the neurons we have as we age. Diet products: who would have thought a product with “nutra” in its name would be toxic and even carcinogenic? Symptoms of aspartame poisoning can mimic those of early multiple sclerosis: numbness, weakness, or tingling in one or more limbs, vision problems, slurred speech, and tremors, to name a few.

13

Independent studies have found G.D. Searle’s NutraSweet to cause brain cancer in mice, and the studies submitted by Searle to the FDA for market approval were quickly suspected of being sloppy at best. Aspartame’s carcinogenic effect was seen at levels as low as 400 parts per million, or about 20 milligrams a day for humans. This is much less than current daily limits set for Americans (50 milligrams) and for British consumers (40 milligrams). The neurotoxic evidence against NutraSweet, or aspartame, is becoming so well-known that the company had to re-brand its product under its new name: “AminoSweet.” Another artificial sweetener, Truvia (erythritol), can be used to kill fruit flies. The inventors of sucralose (a chlorocarbon) were actually trying to design new insecticides when they accidentally discovered its sweet taste. And, as explained by Dr. Janet Starr Hull in the December 2003 issue of The Healthy Newsletter, since sweeteners are more profitable than pesticides, they nixed the insecticide and brought Splenda to the marketplace. Learn to go without sweeteners, or use a scant drop of pure stevia. Stevia is 300 times sweeter than sugar so pure stevia is never used in 1:1 ratios to sugar. Important

to note: once the big companies jumped on the stevia bandwagon, we started seeing stevia in little packets similar to the artificial sweeteners. If there is anything besides pure stevia (stevia rebaudiana) listed in the ingredients, it’s most likely a corn derivative. If it’s not organic or GMO-Free certified, assume it is made with GMO ingredients, and avoid it! Less obvious toxins that can harm our mental stability come from unhealthy relationships. Involvement in a relationship that causes stress, frustration, or harm of any kind will take its toll on mental health. This type of stress can contribute to anxiety or depression. In naturopathic medicine we strive to address the underlying cause of any disorder, aiming to remove the obstacle to cure whenever possible. Sometimes, this can come in the form of a toxic relationship.

What About the New Smart Drugs?

Nootropics are drugs that improve mental functions such as attention, cognition, memory, motivation, and ability to concentrate, but they are not without side effects. For example, Selegiline, a drug used for Parkinson’s, has side effects that include dizziness, headache and insomnia; serious risks include irregular heart rhythm, hallucination and other mental status alterations. Donepezil, used to improve symptoms and slow progression of dementia and Alzheimer’s, increases risk of seizure, and commonly causes insomnia, fatigue and depression.

It seems, at least now, there’s no magic pill. A healthy lifestyle designed to prevent chronic degenerative diseases in general may be our best defense against mental decline as we age. In conventional medicine, multiple diseases and symptoms inevitably lead to the use of multiple drugs, a condition known as polypharmacy. Drug interactions can mimic mental decline. Often, the interactions of several drugs can actually be the cause of what seems to be mental decline. When a healthcare provider fails to recognize a new symptom as an adverse drug reaction, another drug is unnecessarily prescribed to treat the new problem, instead of changing or withdrawing the responsible drug, creating a ‘prescribing cascade,’ and adding further risks. Elderly folks are especially at-risk. They often are hypersensitive to drug therapy because of reduced efficiency in liver detoxification, and are more susceptible to adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions. A new therapy brings hope to Alzheimer’s sufferers. Although drugs are often prescribed for the symptoms of age-related dementia, until recently, there has not been an effective medical treatment that could actually restore cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients. But through the research of Drs. Hinz, Alvin and Uncini, a cutting-edge nutritionally-based therapy, which consists of simultaneously optimizing the four main neurotransmitters within the nerve synapse (dopamine, serotonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine), is becoming available.

It’s generally agreed within the scientific literature that the Alzheimer’s brain is associated with electrical conduction deficits. These defects can be compensated for by increasing concentrations of neurotransmitters. But even on an optimal diet, this is tough to do, as these neurotransmitters do not cross the BBB; the only way to increase neurotransmitter levels within the brain is to administer high doses of their amino acid precursors. Combined with testing for the function of the neurotransmitter receptors, it is possible to restore cognitive function in many cases. Although about a third of patients who try this approach have virtually no response, and some patients may need a multi-factorial approach where neurotransmitter optimization is a first step when other factors coexist, the patients who do respond positively with this approach usually do so within one to three months, and can experience a profound restoration of cognitive function. The downside of this approach is that once restoration has occurred, steps need to be taken to insure that a strict regimen of supplementation is followed to retain cognitive function. Keeping the mind sharp does require some foresight and focused intention. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits now can help guard against age-related cognitive decline. Doctors Notes

Causes & Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome from a Functional Medicine Approach hronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is one of those conditions which is difficult to diagnose, as no objective laboratory tests exist. CFS may be the diagnosis when unexplained fatigue lasts for six months or longer, is not relieved by bed rest, and when the patient presents with at least four of the symptoms below:

C

Not A Very Promising Outlook From A Standard Medical Perspective!

• loss of memory or concentration • feeling unrefreshed after sleep • muscle pain • headaches • multi-joint pain without redness or swelling • frequent sore throat • tender lymph nodes in neck and armpits

As with many other conditions you may have heard me expand on, functional medicine takes a significantly different approach. Rather than assessing the disease and attempting to prescribe medications, or even supplements, to alleviate the symptoms, the FM practitioner goes back in time with the patient, through the use of very detailed questionnaires and in-depth history taking, attempting to uncover events or circumstances in the patient’s life which may have set up a scenario allowing the causative factor(s) to take hold.

Sometimes CFS develops after a viral infection. Pathogens possibly linked to CFS include: • Human herpes virus six • Ross River virus (a mosquito-borne tropical disease) • Epstein-Barr • Human retroviruses • Mycoplasma (a cause of atypical pneumonia) • Rubella (also known as German measles) • Candida alibicans (which causes yeast infections) CFS also can be confused with Lyme disease, mononucleosis, lupus, fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, and multiple sclerosis. Standard therapies include medications for depression, sleep, anxiety, and pain.

Are You at Risk? Women between the ages of 30 and 50 are the group most often affected by CFS. In other words, your age and gender may increase your risk. Those who are overweight or inactive also are more likely to have CFS. Genetic predisposition, allergies, stress, and environmental factors may also increase your risk.

The Functional Medicine Approach

Stress, Trauma, and the Immune System The tipping point might have been a period of great stress or trauma–physical, emotional, or psychological–which ultimately exhausted the hormonal system, thus compromising the patient’s immune status. Some examples include travel to other countries, divorce, loss of a loved one, or protracted financial or emotional stresses. Once the immune system has been affected, changes in the gastrointestinal system usually follow, allowing absorption of molecules which can act as antigens and triggering a further immune response. You may have heard of this as ‘leaky gut syndrome,’ but not realized all the steps necessary to ultimately cause this condition. The end result can easily be extreme exhaustion, as well as any of the symptoms listed above, due to an autoimmune response by the body.

Customized Next Steps Once the triggers have been assessed, objective laboratory tests are used to ascertain the degree to which both the immune (adrenal) system and the gastrointestinal system have been affected. These results offer us a clear road map to follow with each patient, personalized to their own condition. Based upon results, patients are provided with specific lifestyle changes ranging from dietary modifications, sleep enhancement, stress- reduction techniques, to a detailed supplementation program designed to rebuild the immune system and heal the digestive tract.

The recommended lab tests may include an Adrenal Stress Profile, which is performed on saliva samples collected throughout one day, as well as a GI Profile, performed on stool samples collected on three to four successive days. These samples can be collected by the patient in the privacy of their home, shipped directly to the laboratory, and results are available in three to four weeks. Blood testing is usually not necessary. Occasionally, patients who may not respond appropriately may need to be tested for systemic toxicity, particularly if they have spent appreciable time in a toxic environment; this test would be run on a urine sample, again submitted directly to the lab. Specific therapies and lifestyle changes may include: • Adoption of a gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free diet for a period of time. • Changes in timing of sleep patterns and conditions. • Additional dietary changes designed to normalize blood sugar patterns. • Alternative stress reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, etc. • Supplement protocols including bioidentical plant-based hormones in extremely small doses, designed to prompt the body’s own systems to normalize production and timing of internal hormones, and glandulars/nutrients to help rebuild adrenal tissues and heal the GI lining. • Anti-Candida (yeast) protocols. • Elimination of any sub-clinical or clinical GI infections uncovered by laboratory panels. • Some patients would benefit from some outside counseling to deal with the original stressor, as well as the additional stresses this protracted condition can cause.

Retesting at six months to one year will give us objective proof of improvement, or let us know of any course corrections which may be necessary. These programs are co-managed by the patient’s primary care physician who can make decisions with the patient to reduce or eliminate medications as needed, and as symptoms improve. Full improvement can take as long as 6-18 months, although most patients begin to see changes within the first several weeks. Every bit as important as the proper treatment protocol is the physician’s understanding of the many ramifications of this condition. By the time patients come to see a functional medicine doctor, they have been through countless other physicians and innumerable tests, only to be told they either have something which cannot be helped, or that “It’s all in your head.”

Alternatives do Exist Many patients have nearly lost hope or are at best dubious about their prospects; while we do not want to raise hopes unduly, patients need to know that alternatives do exist, some of which have helped countless other patients with similar symptoms. The message needs to come across that they have a dedicated practitioner firmly in their corner who will see the process through with them until a hopefully favorable outcome is achieved.

After the initial consulting process and lab testing is completed, the patient will be seen on a very infrequent basis; this is by design, as he or she must understand that they are now taking full responsibility for the outcome of the process. The functional medicine doctor acts as a repository of knowledge and as a coach, but the heavy lifting is now up to the patient. Dietary and lifestyle changes are by no means easy tasks at the outset, but once the patient perceives the differences in the severity and frequency in symptoms, the regimen will be much easier to follow, and actually becomes routine in a relatively short time. The doctor-patient process and chronology usually works something like this: • Initial consultation of about one hour, discussing detailed history and digging for root causes. • Patient leaves first visit with appropriate lab kits, submits samples from home, and begins to follow dietary and lifestyle recommendations. • Second consultation, usually 30 minutes, to discuss lab results and formulate a personalized, detailed protocol based on lab results; patient leaves with supplements required to follow protocol, and any additional fine-tuning of dietary and lifestyle changes. • Patient returns only if course-correction is necessary, or if significant life changes have transpired. • Patient returns at the six-month mark for lab retesting, if appropriate. Of course, the physician is available for interim phone calls or emails to respond to questions the patient may have during the process.

Other Symptoms may Disappear One of the most surprising things (to patients) that we see in our practice is the resolution of other unrelated symptoms which occur as the protocols are followed. As our goal is not to treat symptoms, but rather re-balance body systems, once this is accomplished, a host of other symptoms often disappear or improve as well. Patients who present with CFS symptoms and follow the prescribed protocols will often tell us that joint and muscular pains, headaches, digestive symptoms, insomnia, anxiety, and a host of other symp-

15 Points of Health

I

have been in practice for more than 10 years now. I have seen more than 7000 patients walk through my doors and it has taught me a lot about human nature.

• Those who know they have a problem and are ready to deal with it logically • Those who invent problems to deal with • Those who are in denial that they have any health problems • Those who reduce or ignore signs of poor health

signs well before a problem occurs. Also, most of the chronic conditions I mentioned will develop over a series of decades–not months. For example, the average time for the evolution of breast cancer is well known; in most cases, it takes eight to ten years before it can be detected by a mammogram or by a self exam. It was former President Bill Clinton who had a full physical, every six months for eight years, conducted by the top cardiologists in the country. So how did they miss the fact that he had four blocked arteries to his heart and needed a quadruple bypass? The reality in America today is that most people will tolerate their problem until it becomes a disease.

Minimizers Say They Feel Healthy

One Dollar is Spent on Prevention

I call people in this last group ‘minimizers,’ and they are prevalent in New England. Minimizers’ health is controlled by medications, or they have multiple complaints that have accumulated over the years that they have not looked at as a whole, and they tell me they feel “generally healthy.” What I find interesting is that this marginal-health philosophy is supported and encouraged by healthcare practitioners, friends and families who see general aches, pains, digestive complaints or sleep issues as “just a part of getting older.” This is the classic statement of a minimizer.

Statistics show for every $100 spent on healthcare only $1 is spent on prevention, while $99 are spent on disease treatment. In my opinion, this is why the American Healthcare system is the most costly in the world (according to the World Health Organization) and very dangerous to those who wish to stay healthy.

I have learned that there are really four types of patients:

The Real Danger in Our Healthcare System There is a real danger in this type of thinking. It puts one in a reactive state, meaning they deal with their health only when they have a serious problem. What is serious? Cancer? Heart Disease? Diabetes? The fact is that most health conditions will give warning

You Can Avoid Disease Unfortunately, when many people come to see me, they are in denial about their health and unclear that there is a problem. They are not aware that they are ticking time bombs ready to go at any moment. Most people on medications don’t realize that they are like scuba divers about to run out of air. The meds are keeping them alive. I believe that with Integrative Chinese Medicine we can avoid and prevent these advanced diseases by addressing the root cause of the problem. However, the first step is that the individual has to have the awareness that they have a problem to begin with. So I have devised my self assessment survey. I encourage all readers to answer these 15 very simple questions: DO YOU: 1) have ANY symptoms at all? Can you say you have no PMS, sore breasts, hot flashes, body or joint pain, no headaches, no need for any medications of any kind and this includes over the counter painkillers or anti-histamines? 2) have the ability to sleep seven-eight hours with unbroken sleep every night? 3) have a high level of energy for 12 hours continually? 4) have a positive emotional outlook and are you socially outgoing?

20

5) have normal urination; every three-four hours during the day? 6) have normal bowel movements; one-two times every day, well formed? 7) have a normal appetite at least three times a day, eating breakfast, lunch and dinner (NOT skipping breakfast and then overeating during lunch or dinner)? 8) have a normal sexual drive, one-two times a week? 9) have a normal body temperature ranging from 98.5 – 98.8 F? 10) have un-medicated blood pressure 120/80(men) and 110/70(women) and no more than 40 points between the top andbottom number (pulse pressure)? 11) have regular menstrual cycles of 26-28 days and 3-5 days of medium bleeding? 12) perspire after 15 minutes of exercise? 13) have a normal/regular resting heart rate (pulse)? (Men: 6068 beats per minute. Women: 64-74 beats per minute.) 14) have a normal /regular breathing resting rate (one breath includes one inhale and one exhale)? Men: 8-12 breaths per minute. Women: 12-14 breaths per minute. 15) have the ability to relax and enjoy doing nothing? If you answered NO to any of these questions, you may have a problem worth checking out. In our office, we check all systems including the nervous system, organ functions, blood and circulation, through various means including classical Chinese medicine diagnosis as well as using modern blood tests and testing. If we find a problem, we will explain it and discuss your options to treat it naturally. If you have a goal of living a long, healthy and vital life, don’t wait for a disease diagnosis before you get your body checked properly. ou know probiotics are important, but what are they exactly, and does science support taking them? If yes, why do you need them and what is the best way to incorporate them into your daily dietary regimen?

Probiotics Defined There are more than 400 microorganisms, both healthy and harmful, in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Found normally in a healthy GI tract, probiotics (aka flora) are beneficial live organisms that help improve their balance. The lining of the GI tract is the largest interface between the body and the external environment. In the form of trillions of protective bacteria, the intestines have three types of chemical detectors. These nerve cells, endocrine cells, and immune cells comprise extensive systems whose signals affect tissues and organs throughout the body: (1) the intestinal nervous system has almost 1B neurons; (2) the intestinal endocrine system uses more than 20 hormones; and (3) the intestinal immune system contains 70-80% of the body’s immune cells. The composition of the intestinal microbial population profoundly impacts these detectors. The numerous probiotic strains have different but overlapping benefits. They (1) promote the function of the intestinal inner lining, enhancing its ability to act as a barrier to the entry of potentially dangerous organisms and chemicals; (2) conquer potentially dangerous organisms in the intestine, thereby reducing the risk of infection or toxin-mediated diseases, (3) regulate and boost immune responses (e.g., synthesize B and other vitamins); and (4) suppress inflammation. Modern diets and lifestyles, environmental factors, aging, and the overuse of antibiotics, steroids, and birth control pills, all threaten the body’s flora. Negative changes in the intestines are firmly associated with various chronic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), cancer, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. An unhealthy population of intestinal bacteria is also recognized as the cause of allergic disorders, asthma, and obesity. Probiotics supplementation can help restore bacterial balance and cellular communications. Practitioners have used probiotic therapy to prevent or treat minor digestive symptoms (i.e., bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea), intestinal infections (e.g., candidiasis/ yeast syndrome), gastritis and H. pylori-induced ulcers, colitis, IBD/ IBS, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Studies also show that probiotics can reverse metabolic syndrome in overweight people, 22

Natural Nutmeg - September 2014

who have lower levels of beneficial bacteria than slender people and thus suffer from system-wide inflammation.

Probiotics Sources Food sources of probiotics include: (1) fermented cabbage (sauerkraut; kim chi); (2) kombucha; (3) miso and tempeh (from fermented soy); and (4) cultured dairy products (ideally organic, without hormones, pesticides/herbicides, dioxin, or PCBs), such as yogurt or kefir. (Note: Although taking probiotics in the proper concentration may be beneficial for antibiotic-induced diarrhea, at least one study found that consuming yogurt during antibiotic treatments had no significant effect on the incidence of diarrhea.) High-quality, refrigerated (to prevent potency reduction from bacteria death), enteric coated (to ensure delivery into the small intestine), dietary supplements are the most potent and reliable, and thus the healthiest source of probiotics. This is especially true for candidiasis patients who must avoid dairy and fermented foods because they feed yeast.

Therapeutic Dosages & Safety While probiotics are known to be critical to human health, there is no recommended daily requirement. Probiotics can sustain themselves in the gut unless threatened. Flora dosages are expressed in millions or billions of organisms and numbers of strains. The appropriate daily dose and mix of strains depends on an individual’s health and age. Probiotic supplements provide various combinations of the strains discussed below, in counts from 500 million to as high as over 200 billion. Experts generally recommend a minimum of ten strains, and higher counts are frequently ideal for addressing more severe health conditions. Since probiotics are living organisms, they should be taken daily and long-term. Doing so reinforces the beneficial bacterial colonies in the body, which should gradually crowd out harmful bacteria and yeasts growing there. If tolerated, switch products every six to eight weeks to propagate different strains. In addition to adding probiotics to your supplement regimen, consider selecting a product that also provides pH-decreasing prebiotics [e.g., FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides), inulin], which feed the good bacteria and thus foster a healthy environment for their growth. Prebiotics also relieve constipation, enhance mineral absorption (calcium, magnesium, iron), and may decrease cholesterol and reduce colon cancer risk. A typical adult daily dose of FOS is approximately 200 mg. Food sources of prebiotics include flax, berries, and leafy greens. L-Glutamine and N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG), two other probiotic supplement options, protect the intestinal mucosal lining, especially against leaky gut syndrome. While probiotics are generally well-tolerated, they can temporarily increase digestive gas. Those who are immunosuppressed or

have severe acute pancreatitis or compromised gut integrity should use them with the guidance of an experienced health practitioner.

Key Probiotic Strains - Scientific Support Although a complete discussion is beyond the scope of this article, clinical studies support taking various key flora strains: Bifidobacterium (B.) – (1) promotes healthy food digestion; (2) lowers the levels of multiple biological markers of colon cancer risk in colitis patients; (3) raises HDL and lowers total and LDL cholesterol; (4) may prevent traveler’s diarrhea, when used with L. acidophilus, L. bulgaricus, or Streptococcus thermophilus; (5) may effectively treat atopic eczema in infants; and (6) may effectively treat IBS. Lactobacillus (L.) – (1) helps dairy digestion); (2) competes with harmful bacteria for nutrients; (3) excretes natural antibiotics; and (4) combats diarrhea. L. Acidophilus – (1) in helping to break down foods, creates an unfriendly acidic environment for harmful organisms; (2) inhibits the growth of yeast, a known cause of vaginal yeast infections, candidiasis, and UTIs; (3) improves the absorption of nutrients; (4) decreases the side effects of antibiotics, including diarrhea; and (5) can help prevent constipation and IBS. B. Bifidum – (1) prevents increase of harmful bacteria; (2) bolsters the immune system; (3) aids digestion; (4) prevents eczema in children when fed to expecting mothers; and (5) combats allergies. B. Infantis - (1) may help reduce numerous IBS symptoms; and (2) produces acids that may impede the colonization and growth of harmful bacteria in the colon. B. Longum – (1) can reduce the incidence of the flu and combat allergies, including lactose intolerance; (2) prevents antibioticinduced diarrhea; (3) reduces cholesterol; (4) stimulates the immune system; (5) protects against colon cancer and other digestive malignancies; and (6) the stable BB536® strain increases the numbers of bifidobacteria in the colon. B. Breve – (1) appears to inhibit E coli; (2) inhibits growth of yeast; (3) superior ability to break down various foods, including fiber; and (4) may reduce gas, diarrhea, and bowel irritations.

L. Gasseri – (1) suppresses H. pylori bacteria, a common cause of peptic ulcers; and (2) reduces inflammation of the gastric lining. L. Plantarum – (1) reduces the severity of eczema; (2) with other strains, combats ulcerative colitis and IBS. L. Reuteri – (1) boosts immunity; (2) heals colic; (3) prevents and treats diarrhea, especially from rotavirus in children; (4) protects against yeast infections and UTIs; (5) combats infantile eczema; and (6) may combat H. pylori. L. Rhamnosus – (1) may prevent/reduce chemotherapy-induced diarrhea; (2) reduces the incidence of infantile eczema; (3) combats children’s constipation; and (4) boosts immunity. Saccharomyces (S.) Boulardii (a “friendly” yeast) – (1) guards against E. Coli-induced intestinal inflammation; (2) combats various types of diarrhea, including traveler’s and that resulting from IBS and antibiotics; and (3) inhibits yeast growth and its hyphae development. Probiotic therapy is both preventive and curative. It should be used as part of a general anti-inflammatory diet that excludes/ minimizes gluten, dairy, sugar, preservatives, additives and dyes, saturated fat, and any other foods to which a patient may be sensitive. Common other allergens include soy, corn, nuts, fish, and eggs. Allergy testing or elimination diets can determine which of these may cause or aggravate digestive and related symptoms. 1 The statements in this article have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. L. Bulgaricus – (1) reduces intestinal infection by lowering the pH of the GI tract; (2) boosts immunity by excreting natural antibiotics; and (3) combats lactose intolerance. L. Casei – (1) controls diarrhea; (2) reduces gut inflammation; (3) reduces lactose intolerance; (4) counteracts the pro-inflammatory effects of E. coli on Crohn’s disease; and (5) promotes growth of L. acidophilus.

12 Steps to Money Rehabilitation By Lawrence Ford, AIF

A

fter nearly five years of living on a small Caribbean island, following dreams, signs, unplugging, expanding my spiritual gifts, and exposing my children to a wider view of the world, it was time to come home. I had grown personally through life’s initiations on this tiny island with few distractions. But it was time to re-submerge myself in the American dream to continue with my soul’s calling, and to continue to provide for my growing family and myself. Although I had continued to manage people’s money and advise to multi-national financial services corporations while away in the middle of the sea, I was unsure what direction I was going to focus on when I returned to the “states.” The year was 2007. My connections in the world of money were still strong, so I pulled out some old names from my contact list and scheduled a few choice appointments in New York City. My first stop was an old contact who was arguably one of the most financially successful people on Wall Street. He was gracious and spent time with me talking about my plans to get “back in the game” as he put it. When he calls, people respond, and soon my cell phone was lighting up with offers to meet. I began to see a trend after my first few meetings that disturbed me. These people, who I was meeting with, were all making about five hundred thousand a year before I left. And now only five years later they were all bragging about the fact that they were making over five million a year. I felt like I had come from another planet. Why didn’t anyone see what I was seeing? This huge division of wealth squeezing out the middle class. And why weren’t people concerned? Didn’t anyone else see this? I admit there was a big part of me that felt anticipation and excitement about making some of that money, but the longing for the drug of money was soon overcome by the sadness I felt in my heart for what was happening to America. It was clear to me that the divide of wealth between the rich and the poor was expanding, and the shrinking of the middle class didn’t look like it was going to slow down anytime soon.

Money as a Drug That was seven years ago now. We have been through a lot since then. Unfortunately it does not appear as if we have learned much, even from the recent financial meltdown of 2008. Just like an 26

Natural Nutmeg - September 2014

alcoholic who gets rescued by the enabler and consequently robbed of the opportunity to learn and grow from their mistakes; the government rescued our financial markets. And today we find ourselves back at the same drunken party prior to the financial meltdown of 2008. This thing we call money is a powerful drug, and we are a world full of addicts. If we are going to heal before we bottom out to a very painful or unrecoverable low, we must all wake up and see our existence from a different perspective; to see with a wider view than republican, democrat, liberal, or conservative. Whether we have too much of it, or not enough, the craving for money is the problem. When we crave for money for things far beyond basic needs and safety we will never have enough. When we feel like we need to “get it” before the other guy we will always be in fear. An increasing amount of Americans are on edge, cynical and working harder for less. For the wealthy it seems like there is never enough, and the feeling of superiority seems to grow in line with the expanding wealth and income gap. Money is a drug that is being abused, and we are all responsible, and capable of making a positive change.

Path to Rehabilitation Take charge of your own relationship with your money. Try these 12 steps. 1. Demand to work for companies that have a ratio of highest paid to lowest paid employees that are less than 100-1. Ask this question when you are interviewing or to your current human resource department – see if they know the number. 2. Stop making it “cool” to be ultra wealthy. Instead simply look at these people as they are in need of healing– not something to drool over and dream about when we see them on the cover of Forbes magazine with their private jets, or music videos with fast cars and castles on the hill. It could be argued that in corporate America we have bred a group of CEO’s whom many could easily be diagnosed as psychopathic and or sociopathic. 3. Buy what you need, not what the media or your neighbor tells you to buy – resist the ridiculous pressures brought upon you

through advertising and by the people who you hang around with be strong, be you. 4. Practice an annual money cleanse – review your bills and trim your expenses by at least 10%. 5. Go “old school” for a month. Use cash for all of your spending for an entire 30 days. Make envelopes labeled with each category of spending for the month (rent, food, etc.) and put in your estimated allotted amount for each. It is amazing what happens when you spend the actual physicality of money as opposed to swiping credit and debit cards. Notice how you feel as the cash leaves your hands. 6. Pay yourself first. Imagine a line at your front door when you come home at night– imagine that line is full of people with bills waiting for your money. If you are like most people, you go to the end of the line, and when you finally make it to your own front door there is no money left. From now on, cut in front – it is your home, and your money. Even if it is only a small amount that you can afford, and you can always afford a small amount, save it. Compounding is either your friend or foe – use it to your benefit. 7. Give some away. I don’t mean just in the collection plate at church, I mean make it personal. Find someone that you can help. And yes, you always have enough to do something. We are all too disconnected in this world. Make it local. Make it personal, and the benefits will be greater for all. Like blood in the body, money needs to flow to remain healthy. 8. Find all of your loose change laying around the house or in your car, and bring it to your local bank coin counter. Then do something nice for yourself with what you find. You might be amazed at how much it adds up, and how much you appreciate the reward. 9. Stop believing that just because someone is earning more money than you or has more things than you that they are better or smarter than you. Making money involves hard work and luck. The harder you work the luckier you get, but that does not mean that everyone who works hard makes good money. After many years I have come to appreciate that things beyond our control also play a role in building wealth.

10. Stop buying into the debt game. Pay off all credit cards at the end of the month and never take out loans for non-essential items. Debt has costs way beyond the annual rates. 11. Stop believing that money will make everything better. Yes we need money, but most of the time it is used as an excuse. Once I get…I will…then I can. These are always lies. Believe in yourself and don’t listen to the fear based noise of others. 12. Above all remember you are here for a reason. Your soul has a special song, a special vibration, similar to that of a snowflake, no two are alike. Empower yourself with sound money management principles to meet your basic needs, beyond that money has little meaning. Go live your dreams, your purpose - it is why you are here.

Natural Nutmeg - September 2014

Martin Luther King had it right when he did something simple but profound that helped fuel the civil rights movement. Instead of seeing people who abused and hated African Americans, King saw them as sick and in need of healing- not another enemy to be attacked. King helped us see the problem with compassion, not with more hate. Capitalism and the invention of money have lifted millions out of poverty and helped create better lives for many of us. It’s not the money or the system that is inherently bad; it is how it is being abused that is causing the problem.

Our monetary system and the people in control of our wealth are in need of healing. And the best way to make transformations is to send compassion to the people we see caught up in the addiction and be the change we wish to see in the world. Follow the 12 steps to improve your OWN relationship with money and your example will lead the way. Money is not a bad thing. Earn it, spend it and invest it wisely. You deserve it. Access The Healing Force Within

Lisa Zaccheo, MA, BCH, BCI

A

ccording to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), more than 1 million Americans suffer from CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) (some feel that the actual number is closer to 14 million) and yet most aspects of the syndrome remain a mystery. From its diagnosis; because there are no definitive tests for the syndrome, to its causes, right through to its treatment. As a result, this disease is all the more challenging for those suffering with it. Fortunately, all is not lost. In fact, initial findings indicate that hypnosis is a viable and totally natural treatment option, because it has been scientifically proven to effectively mitigate most of the symptoms of CFS. Symptoms include problems with sleep, persistent pain (a meta-analysis of 18 studies demonstrates that hypnosis relieved pain in 75% of the people studied), headaches, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome (hypnosis has been proven to be 85% effective with IBS), immune system func-

30

Natural Nutmeg - September 2014

tion, and mood disturbances such as anxiety and depression. To cite a recent article in the Huffington Post, “Two meta-analyses of existing pain and hypnosis research deemed hypnosis effective at lowering pain associated with a number of conditions, including fibromyalgia, arthritis and cancer.” Even more importantly, because hypnosis provides access to the subconscious mind (which houses our long-term memory), it can shed light on the actual cause of the syndrome, which will vary amongst individual sufferers. For some, the case will be a lingering virus or physical trauma, for others the origin will be exposure to toxins, leaky gut syndrome or a genetic pre-disposition. For still others, the origin will be emotional trauma or long-term mental stress, fear of pain, fear of death or generalized worry. Whatever the case, the subconscious

mind, when guided properly, is extremely capable of not only identifying the cause, but in many cases, (especially when the cause has a mental or emotional component), can address the cause vs. just chasing the symptoms. Lastly, dealing with a chronic illness is mentally and emotionally challenging for the individual struggling, as well as his or her family members and caretakers. In my biased opinion, there’s nothing better at helping people stabilize mentally and emotionally by releasing a lot of the pent-up emotions that have been building over time and putting unhealthy pressure on their system, as well as helping to shift perspective and expectations. An article by Melinda Beck in the Wall Street Journal stated, “Hypnosis, in turn, can help patients adjust those expectations to minimize pain, fear and disability.” After having worked on dozens of cases of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia using hypnosis, NLP, guided imagery and other subconscious tools and techniques, I’ve seen tremendous success. At minimum, many of the symptoms will be cleared; at best the disease will go into spontaneous remission. The number of sessions varies by individual, with some having a one-session miracle. For the majority it is a process, but one that’s totally natural and empowering, which is probably one of the biggest benefits, as it helps people reclaim their power after feeling powerless against this disease. To quote a former sufferer: “As an educator my life was very difficult due to my fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Going into a classroom every single day as well as trying to do my regular chores around the house was exhausting and painful. After my symptoms left me I just could

not understand how this could work. I’ve tried everything under the sun with only slight decreases in my pain and fatigue. I do not have any symptoms …Tim explained to me that the emotional impact of this has been building in my inner mind and eventually it produced symptoms. Once we found out the situation that caused this my symptoms immediately went away, I mean the moment I opened my eyes I felt a lot better. It’s been a year and a half now and there aren’t any words to describe how I feel about getting my life back.” - Jeya C To quote Hippocrates: “Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.” Hypnosis gives us all access to that inner doctor and the healing force within us. Working Through Sticking Points

W

hen was the last time you gave yourself permission to reach beyond your comfort zone? Take a moment and bring awareness to your current surroundings. What is happening around you and within you? Do you notice something you want to change?

Do You Have Self-Limiting Beliefs? Many people have influenced your journey from infancy to adulthood. We can look back at childhood, where many of us had self-limiting beliefs placed on us which were based on what we were told was right or wrong, or good or bad, based on someone else’s belief system, and we carry these behaviors and traits over to adulthood. Those beliefs that you learned early in life can be some of the hardest to change. They remain part of your memory, which may influence your behaviors. Let us take relationships as an example. We all know people who repeatedly enter relationships with others who are likely to hurt and disappoint them. They end one hurtful relationship then enter another one, knowing the new relationship is a carbon copy of a previous one. This is an example of repeating unrewarding situations in the

present time that are similar to unhappy or unhealthy situations and relationships that occurred in childhood.

Changing Old Beliefs Discovering who you are requires clearing the chatter in your mind; the critical voice that is analyzing and judging. It involves giving yourself permission to change and to make choices that are right for you–not choices that are right for others in your life, but choices that are right for just you. You have within you the ability to move through life with ease and grace. All you have to do is truly believe. It is this belief that becomes your reality, so believe nothing is impossible. From the moment you wake to the time you go to bed, your days are filled with making choices. These choices are neither right or wrong nor good or bad. They just have different outcomes and they become part of your journey. You have the ability to give yourself permission to make choices and to move forward in your life with ease, grace and joy. Take small steps and know there will be ups and downs in the road. Your path may not always be as straight as you would like, but it is those curves,

those ups and downs which give you the opportunity to learn lessons about who you are, your wants and your needs. These lessons give you the opportunity to grow. This winding path allows you time to reflect and look within to get acquainted with your true self.

The Importance of the Present Moment You can embrace your life and feel you are living a life of fulfillment when you focus on the present moment. We often are caught up in the past, looking back on what we should or shouldn’t have done, or looking too far in the future. When you stop and think about this, it becomes clear that you are missing out on what is currently happening to you and around you at the present moment. How can you actively be aware of the present if you are thinking about the past and the future? It is being aware of the present moment and what you are currently learning about yourself and your surroundings that will get you to a place of peace and fulfillment.

Give Yourself Permission Through your journey, you can let go of the emotions and memories of your experiences that no longer serve your highest and best good and you can replace them with balance and wellness. Give yourself permission to reach beyond your comfort zone, set your intention for expanding into your higher consciousness, and allow great things to come your way, as you are deserving of all of life’s good things. When you live your life the way you want and not the way others want you to is when you can come to a place of fulfillment and love for yourself that will radiate out into the world. When you open your mind and heart to allow change and bring aware-

ness to your own beliefs, thoughts, and actions, not those of others, you create love, wellness and happiness in your life. Opening your awareness can be a lifechanging event that truly transforms every part of you. It reveals who you truly are and where you stand in this universe. F

requently we hear people complain about their dog’s unruly behavior. Barking, jumping, pulling and begging can be solved by communicating effectively with your dog. Obedience training will not only open up the lines of communication, it will also reinforce that you are the leader. Basic obedience commands (sit, stay, down, come, stand) can be used to replace unwanted behavior. Training is fun and easy if you follow a few simple guidelines: • Start training in an area free of distractions • Keep it simple- Use one word commands • Show the dog what you want. Reward the correct response, even if you did all the work • Be consistant • Good timing is key- praise and reward immediately when you get the desired behavior • Master one command at a time • Once the dog is responding consistently to a command, slowly add in distractions Just like you, dogs need a paycheck so provide a variety of tasty treats that the dog can simply not resist. Oma’s Pride of Avon produces healthy, freeze-dried treats perfect to keep in your pocket for that anytime training opportunity. Don’t Complain, Train!

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a complex disorder marked by profound and debilitating fatigue. Symptoms are varied—from muscle pain to memory loss—and treatment is often a complex guessing game. While scientists develop a cure in the lab, and doctors coordinate customized treatment programs in the office, there is something you can do in the bedroom: go au naturel. No, we’re not suggesting you ditch your pajamas! Rather, the idea is to invest in an organic mattress. It’s been advised those with CFS choose a mattress that provides good support, but conventional mattresses are a nightmarish concoction of oil, polyester, toxins and chemicals, which off-gas while you sleep and do battle with your body. Alternatively, organic mattresses are crafted using natural materials, and set the foundation for high quality sleep, night after night. In addition, sleeping with wool regulates body temperature to reduce tossing and turning and keep you in restorative REM sleep longer. Find your just-right organic bed and bedding through an all-natural source like The Clean Bedroom. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, The Clean Bedroom’s organic mattress specialists are available online, on the phone and in sleep showrooms in Portland, ME, Kittery, ME, Greenwich, CT, Wellesley, MA, New York, NY, Austin, TX and Santa Monica, CA. Details on Elimination Diets

E

ven when you do your best to maintain a balanced diet, food intolerances and sensitivities can put a wrench in your health plans. Food intolerances can lead to symptoms ranging from disruptions in normal digestion to chronic skin issues, and even brain fog! To truly know what foods are causing annoying symptoms for you, consider an elimination diet.

Feeding Your Immune System Your gastrointestinal system (GI), from your mouth to your colon, is made up of an intricate terrain full of hormones, neurotransmitters, bacteria, and enzymes. The foods we eat alter this terrain in many ways. For example, foods can activate or deactivate enzymes, promote or quiet inflammation, and feed pathogenic or friendly bacteria in the gut. The GI is where the majority of our immune system is housed, making it the perfect place to boost and elevate our bodies’ defenses. It all starts with information being given to this network; the food we eat determines how our body will react.

Do You Use Clean-Burning Fuel? If you think of the body as a car and the digestive system as the fuel tank, we would never willingly add cheap inflammatory producing gasoline to the tank. We want clean-burning fuel so our car runs efficiently and is less likely to break down. The body needs food just like a car needs gas, but in a more complex way.

Why Try an Elimination Diet?

Typical elimination diets avoid all potentially inflammatory foods, including: • Citrus fruits • Night-shade vegetables, including tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant • Gluten/wheat containing foods • Corn • Soy and other legumes • Nuts • Meat, except fish and wild game • Dairy products • Sauces, food additives and colorings • Sweeteners

Now You Know What To Avoid, What Can You Eat? It may seem too overwhelming to cut out all foods recommended in a full elimination diet. This is where food intolerance testing comes in handy. It can be helpful to test for specifics as to which foods could be creating the most inflammation or irritation for your particular system. This creates a road map to help determine specifically which foods to eliminate first. However, food intolerance testing is not fool proof, there can be false negatives and positives, with these tests, but nonetheless can be very helpful and motivating.

How Long does an Elimination Diet Last?

Details on the Diet

Elimination diet lengths vary. It is said it takes three to six months to quiet inflammatory processes in the digestive system after eating offending foods. If you cannot bear to part from your gluten for that long, even as short as a one month period of time can be enough to find positive benefit. The proof is in the pudding, if you will: It comes when you add an eliminated food back into the diet. Keep a journal when you do this, and note all symptoms that arise once food items are reintroduced. Wait up to 48 hours between reintroducing new foods so you’ll have clear results. It is important to note that no single diet is best for everyone. Each person has a unique biochemistry. Honoring this individuality makes it difficult to subscribe to one diet and expect it to work for you. This is why exploring your own food sensitivities is a great way to determine what food choices are best for you. Food sensitivity sufferers have described elimination diets as a profound dietary experiment, so get experimenting!

Elimination diets are as they sound; certain foods are eliminated from the diet for a period of time and can be reintroduced to determine exactly how they affect you. Certain foods (including the popular gluten free and dairy free varieties) are more commonly known to create health issues.

Dr. Ashley Burkman is a board certified licensed naturopathic physician at Connecticut Natural Health Specialists, LLC in Manchester, CT. She is in network with most insurance companies and is now taking new patients. For appointments, please call (860) 533-0179. See ad on page 37.

To treat any disease process in the body you must start with the gut. A health gut equals a healthy body. An elimination diet can be extremely beneficial with many conditions, including: • Seasonal Allergies • Asthma • Skin Conditions • Autoimmunity • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) • Migraine Headaches • Attention Deficit Disorder/Behavior Disorders • Depression/Anxiety • Fibromyalgia

The Benefits of Qigong By Ming Wu, PhD

T

here is an antidote for the hectic pace and stress of our demanding lives. It is the daily practice of qigong (chi gong or chi kung). Qigong, with its roots in traditional Chinese medicine and Taoist philosophy, is an age-old system of exercise and meditation that stimulates the flow of our body’s life-energy known as “qi” (pronounced chee). This system of simple, repetitive, slow-flowing, gentle movements is gaining popularity in the United States because it can bring tranquility to one’s mind, improve one’s physical performance, and cultivate one’s general health, well-being, and longevity. There are several applications of qigong. As a spiritual discipline, the shamans and Buddhists of ancient China developed this practice in their pursuit of harmony and oneness with nature. As a spiritual art in modern

36

times, it can deepen one’s awareness of self and of nature while simultaneously creating a feeling of equilibrium and calm. As a healing art, qigong is sometimes called “medical Qigong,” and as such, it includes exercises for personal well-being and “Tui na” which is an external massage technique used by a master to transmit qi healing energy to a client. Lastly, when applied to sports training qigong improves strength, stamina, coordination, balance and other skills necessary for peak performance. Qigong, although not itself a martial art, forms the basis for all of the martial arts including Tai chi and is therefore, more accessible and suitable to more people. The choreographed, meditative movements have poetic names such as “wave hands like clouds” and “catching the wild bird’s tail.” Qigong evokes the natural and spiritual world yet, it also focuses on fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and balance. And, although it is not a magic “cure-all,” its benefits are very real. One reason Qigong is gaining in popularity is that it requires no special equipment, expensive outfits, or specific athletic conditioning and it is adaptable and safe for people of all ages and all stages of health. It can improve the quality of life for people with chronic disease and reduce stress for people experiencing depression. Qigong is especially beneficial for elderly or impaired individuals who are too frail to engage in robust aerobic conditioning. Other observable and reported benefits include reduced pain and stiffness, improved sleep, enhanced

immunity and lower blood pressure. There is a fledgling body of scientific research that provides evidence of the positive effects qigong has on specific ailments including depression, fatigue, falls related to Parkinson’s disease, osteopenia and cardiovascular disease. 1. A three-month, 14-person study of depressed Chinese-Americans, who were offered one-hour qigong classes twice a week and encouraged to practice at home, found that 60% of those who took at least 15 classes saw a significant improvement in depression based on a standard rating scale. “One theory is that qigong helps people to relax and combat stress,” which tends to aggravate depression, says study co-author Albert Yeung, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Cambridge. Dr. Yeung, stated that while these are preliminary findings, he is excited enough about the potential of qigong to recommend it to his patients with mild and moderate depression. 2. In a study of 96 women getting radiation therapy for breast cancer, a team of Chinese scientists and researchers at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston found reduced depression in women who took five weekly classes of qigong, compared with a control group that didn’t take the classes. Among those depressed at the start of the trial, fatigue was lessened and overall quality of life improved. 3. A study by Fuzhong Li at the Oregon Research Institute (which carries out assessments of tai chi and qi gong’s impact on health conditions) looked at 256 elderly people, from 70 to 92 years old and compared how they benefited from qigong to seated exercise, respectively. “They reported greater than a 40 percent reduction in the number of falls in the group that received qigong.” “This is a very significant finding as older people with thinning bones are at very high risk for fractures.” 4. Studies conducted in Asia have reported that qigong may benefit women with thinning bones. A randomized controlled trial with post-menopausal women diagnosed with osteopenia examined bone density markers as well as computerized motion and concluded with that qigong had positive effects on both measurements.

5. Clinical trials and basic research studies on patients with cardiovascular disease suggest that qigong may be of benefit to these patients in terms of greater exercise capacity and improved quality of life. In a recent review of all qigong research, no adverse events were reported by anyone who participated in qigong classes. Rather, this review revealed the substantial potential qigong has for achieving health benefits, for the minimal cost incurred by this form of self-care, for the potential cost efficiencies of group delivered care, and for the apparent safety of implementation across a variety of populations. The importance and need for the wider implementation of the practice of qigong is apparent. It is predicted that qigong will play a stronger role in prevention-based interventions designed to nurture good health and become an essential component of integrative medicine. Dr. Ming Wu, is a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a third generation Chinese herbalist, and a Master Tai Chi and Qigong instructor. He has studied Tai Chi and Qigong in China and the US for more than 40 years and has taught in the US for over 20 years. He received authentic, Yang Style Tai Chi instruction from his Sifu Grandmaster, Gin Soon Chu, who was a disciple of Yang Sau Chung. He has dedicated his life to teaching and healing others. Qigong is just one of the integral elements of Dr. Wu’s healing practice. Managing STRESS… “Take 10” By Jody Koval, LPC

W

e all know that stress can affect our mental and physical health, appearance, sleep, eating, decisions, relationships, and longevity. So how do we just “Chill out”? With practice! We’ve practiced our current behaviors for some time, and so practice is needed to recondition our thought process and ensuing behaviors. One method to reduce stress is to take long shallow breaths. Practice slowly inhaling through the nose to a count of four, hold it for a moment, and then very slowly, mindfully exhale through the nose, not mouth, for a six count. This can be done several times in a row and throughout the day. This type of breathing can slow the heart rate, feed calming oxygen to stressed muscles, and take our thoughts from the external stress triggers and bring them internally for a moment, which can be just enough to be able to deal effectively with the problem at hand. Thinking of a calming phrase while taking 10 can also help to reduce our stress. Try a phrase like “is it worth it” or “it is what it is” or whatever works for you! If really enraged, try and picture the breath coming out as red smoke! In two to three months, most of my clients catch themselves taking 10 without having been aware they had started doing it! When done correctly, no one will be aware you are trying to calm down and seeing your calm demeanor, they will in turn be inclined to become more calm themselves. This simple process, once practiced, can also provide a ‘mindful’ moment to reflect on what just happened, see alternative points of view, solutions and outcomes. It can also keep a little cool on the heat of the situation… so that we can get through a challenging moment and simply “Chill out”! Trying to achieve a more mindful approach to life can help us with a calmer baseline so that when the proverbial x!?$% hits the fan we are at a better place to deal with it. Mindfulness can be serene or practical. Serene mindfulness is experienced when we stop to smell the roses, literally, or feel the sun on our face while taking a

moment to watch a seagull simply gliding along the coastline. The next time you are driving, while being mindful of the road, try really looking around as though you were hiking or bicycling, taking in all the scenery and not being visually trapped to the confines of the car’s interior limits of the dashboard. You may start to see things you never noticed before and just find some inner peace. Try taking the slower lane and ask yourself if you really need to get there a few frustrated minutes earlier? Is this truly a need or a want? Practical mindfulness can be when we can see that someone close to us is stressed by a wrinkled brow or other familiar mannerism and instead of ignoring them, utilize empathy and acknowledge them. Instead of asking “Why” they are like that, which can put the problem on them and make them defensive, ask “What” happened, which can get them to talk about the problem and thereby lessen stress and strengthen our supportive network for when we need them! If the conflict seems as though it will inevitably escalate, take a few minutes off for all to cool down a little. Simply say that you need to go to the bathroom. This simple tactic can be quite disarming and give each party a few well needed moments to calm down; maybe just enough so cooler heads can prevail and successfully discuss the problem at hand. Practical mindfulness can also alert us that our bodies are reacting to stress (tightening muscles, labored breath…) which we can then take 10 and take a mindful moment to assess and consider our possible reactions and the ensuing consequence for each choice made. Find It All at The Sagamore: Lake George’s Luxury Resort...

B

urned to the ground by a fire not once, but twice and rebuilt again – you can imagine that The Sagamore must be a pretty special resort. Originally built in the late 1880s, it has quite the prestigious history and has hosted families, celebrities and dignitaries alike. Set on the beautiful and serene Lake George in Bolton Landing, The Sagamore occupies a private 70-acre island and you literally feel like you have the entire lake to yourself. Whether you just want to relax on a chaise lounge at the waterfront, or indulge in a spa treatment, or explore 10,000 feet of indoor entertainment with your kids at The Rec, you really can find it all at The Sagamore. After having visited the resort on vacations for over four years, I was thrilled to be invited to experience it on a recent press trip and really get an inside look at this beautiful and historic property. With an unlimited amount of activities for you and your family, The Sagamore is a perfect choice for either a quick weekend getaway or a week-long stay. With a strong focus on family activities, it’s a great location to take the kids as they will be occupied all day, while you relax at the pool or enjoy the spa. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the 390 room resort has had many restorations over the last few years which added a new outdoor pool and spa and salon. I love the choices of accommodations which include the Historic Hotel full of luxurious rooms and suites, or the newly refurbished Lodges which have suites with fireplaces and terraces and many that overlook the lake. Wake up to panoramic views of Lake George from the Governor’s rooms or reserve one of the Historic Hotel’s premier balcony suites, which boast a queen-size pullout sofa and commanding views from a private lakefront balcony. The Lodges are elegantly furnished but have an Adirondack-style, laid back ambience. Need a little more space? The luxurious Lodge Suites are like extended stay apartments with modern kitchens that boast stainless steel appliances, beautiful cabinets and granite countertops. Relax with a cocktail on your private balcony while gazing over Lake George or enjoy a cozy evening in front of the gas fireplace. These elegant retreats also feature a contemporary dining alcove and spacious bathroom with a separate tub and walk-in shower. Feel like playing? The Rec is the largest indoor entertainment facility that I’ve seen at a resort and offers just about anything you… or more likely your children could possibly desire. Picture an indoor

18-hole mini golf course, half-court basketball, an official Wiffleball field with working score board, Wii stations, billiards, ping-pong, foosball and a brand new Rock Climbing wall! And if that’s not enough, there is also an outdoor half-court basketball area, volleyball court, horseshoe pit and five outdoor tennis courts. For the golf aficionados, there is an award-winning, 1928 Donald Ross designed, 18-hole championship golf course with Pro Shop. Looking to relax and rejuvenate – The Sagamore’s newly renovated spa offers amazing spa treatments ranging from Stone Therapy to a Green Island Sugar Scrub. Or you can relax at the private beach area which offers a full-service marina, fishing charters, water skiing and banana boat rides. There is even a heated indoor/outdoor swimming pool. And there is a 3800-square foot Fitness Center with stateof-the-art exercise equipment and complimentary fitness classes. But by far my favorite activity was a complimentary cruise on The Morgan, which is a 72-foot replica of a 19th century touring vessel that gives tours twice daily through the narrows of Lake George showcasing some of the best vistas in the Adirondacks. Located on one of the cleanest lakes in the world, The Sagamore implements many ecofriendly initiatives ranging from: • Partnership with Waste Management to maximize recycling efforts • Donating used furniture, linens, towels, china and glassware to local charities • Replaced incandescent lighting with energy efficient bulbs • Installed digital thermostats into guest rooms • Utilize water conserving toilets • Converted exit lights to LED • Giving guests the opportunity to re-use towels instead of being laundered each day • Supporting local vendors and farmers by purchasing local goods and produce • Hosting Green Meetings with eco-friendly water service and paperless billing If that isn’t enough, by staying at The Sagamore Resort, you’ve made a decision that may save someone’s life. The unused portions of soaps and bottled amenities you enjoy during your stay will be collected, recycled and distributed to children and families in www.NaturalNutmeg.com

need around the globe. Through a partnership with Clean the World, The Sagamore is helping provide these vital hygiene products to the people who need it most. But let me get to the best part (aside from the amazing view from practically anywhere you stand on property), and that’s the food! With seven on-property dining options to choose from, there’s something for every palate. Craving Italian? Don’t miss La Bella Vita, which is the resort’s signature restaurant that serves simple, Italian inspired dishes using fresh garden-grown ingredients. We tried the East Coast Halibut with Tagliolini, Littleneck Clams, Blistered Tear Drop Tomatoes, Italian Artichokes, Capers, Lemon Zest, Parsley, and Extra Virgin Oil and the Aragosta and Bistecca which was Butter Basted Maine Lobster and Tenderloin of Beef, Roasted Cipollini Onions, and Asparagus. Hungering for steak? Perched on a hill overlooking the first tee, The Club Grill is a New York-style steakhouse that served one of the best pieces of Filet Mignon that I’ve had in a while. Looking for waterside dining? Choose from the Pavilion which serves fresh fish; the LakeHouse, which is an open air venue with wrap-around deck and serves light bites with exotic cocktail concoctions; or the Splash Pool Bar which offers lighter fare and cocktails while you soak up the sun and the refreshing breeze off the lake. Bolton Landing offers the most scenic vistas of Lake George, where the mountains, forested islands and quiet blue waters form an idyllic setting. Close to get to yet you feel like you are on your own private island, The Sagamore Resort is a luxury not to be missed. The best thing about it now is that it’s open year-round! It’s the perfect location to celebrate the holidays or for a romantic getaway weekend throughout the winter.
