ne of the best books I have read in a long time on how to successfully apply the Law of Attraction is “Excuse Me – Your Life is Waiting” by Lynn Grabhorn. The movie and subsequent book, “The Secret”, left me with a basic understanding about what the LOA is and how it operates, but what I found missing were the practical tools to implement this law into your life and exactly what I was supposed to do to manifest what I wanted. Not only does Grabhorn explain this in a simple, easy to grasp manner, but she includes life stories of when it worked and when it didn’t work and why. The most vital piece for successful manifestation is attaching an emotion or feeling to what it is you want. This feeling has to have juice, it has to excite you, motivate you, stimulate you and most importantly it has to feel good. The problem most of us run into is that when we think about what we want or we see a visual interpretation of it, we start to think negatively. For example, one of my clients wanted a new BMW – she had it all picked out, had a really strong emotion attached to it and was just waiting for it to wind up in her driveway. So, you know what happens when you want a new car – you start seeing it everywhere. And of course she did… just not in her driveway! During one call she was complaining to me that she didn’t understand why it was taking so long. It didn’t take long for me to figure out why she wasn’t manifesting the car. I asked her, “how do you feel when you see the car you want when you’re driving on the road?” She said, “well, at first I feel really excited when I see it and then I start to think about the fact that I don’t have it yet and I keep wondering when it will happen and I start to get impatient and then I’m envious of the person I saw driving it…” Do you see the problem? She has attached an emotion to her desire, but it isn’t a good emotion. Every time she thinks negatively about the car, it pushes her ability to manifest it back. It’s almost like a tug of war. Grabhorn has a perfect solution. She calls it the “flip switch” and it works brilliantly. She suggests that every day when you wake up you think of one thing that you love about yourself or your life. It can be as simple as the way your hair looks that day to how much you love your children. You can pick the same thing everyday or you can choose different things. What’s important is that whatever you pick must make you happy, excited and joyful. This is called your “flip switch”. Then, throughout your day, as soon as you find you are experiencing a negative emotion – even if it’s not related to what you want to manifest – you must “flip the switch” and think immediately about the thing that brings you joy. Seems pretty easy, doesn’t it? And most days it is, but there will be some days when you want to sink into the negative emotion and stay there. These are the days when you most need that flip switch, because the longer you stay in a negative mindset, the harder it is to manifest. In health and happinerss,

Somatic Experiencing for PTSD
S
omatic Experiencing® (SE®) is an innovative and highly effective body-mind practice used to prevent and heal the consequences of emotional and physical trauma. Developed by Peter A. Levine, PhD and taught by the Somatic Experiencing® Trauma Institute, the SE® method integrates a broad scientific base with more than forty years of observation and research. SE® does not ask a traumatized person to re-tell or re-live the precipitating event; instead, it offers the safety, opportunity, and professional guidance necessary for the person to complete – in a slow and segmented way – the body’s trapped fight, flight, and freeze responses. The origins of SE® are found in the wisdom of nature. Wild animals experience repeated trauma, yet instinctively release their terror response through bodily mechanisms like trembling. Dr. Levine discovered that humans, too, can engage this instinctive awareness and use it to release trauma and regain body-mind equilibrium. With the help of more than 8,000 SE® practitioners located on nearly every continent, thousands of individuals have recaptured their power, peace, and true potential through the practice of Somatic Experiencing®. For more information, visit www.traumahealing.com. For Connecticut SE® training information, write Louise Peyrot at ctsetraining@gmail.com or call (860) 965-5800.
What is Naturopathic Oncology?
N
aturopathic oncology, a specialty area within the medical arts and science of natural medicine, focuses the tenets of Naturopathic medicine to the field of oncology as it pertains to the therapeutics of cancer care. Naturopathic oncologists are employed both in hospital oncology setting as an integral unit together with conventional medicine, or in private practice as primary care providers. Their contribution lies in lending the founding principles of this branch of medicine to the field of oncology providing an alternative perspective to the conventional treatment applications of cancer, or working in conjunction with conventional treatment modalities such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, in order to produce the most positive outcomes possible for the patient. The foundation of naturopathic medicine is cemented in the six Naturopathic principles which seeks first to identify and treat the cause of the ”dis-eases” (disease), as opposed to symptomology; once the root cause is established, one must treat the person as a whole taking into consideration all the components that makes one whole (mind, body, and spirit). Treatment modalities selected should be aligned with nature, least toxic and least invasive, and inflicting no harm. The Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians (OncANP) is an association formed by a group of Naturopathic physicians whose practice either focused on the area of oncology, or possessed a desire to obtain further knowledge regarding this field of medicine. The association aims to establish naturopathic medicine as an integral part of cancer care by their incorporation into the conventional medical oncological practices. Dr. Yvette Whitton focuses on nutritional therapy as a treatment modality, which has been clinically proven to be effective in the treatment of chronic, debilitating diseases such as cancer. She received training through the Gerson Institute in SanDiego , California, in nutritional therapy. To obtain more information regarding this form of therapy, contact Dr. Yvette M. words of wisdom... ...for Teens
This month Bernie answers 3 common questions that he receives regarding the emotional health of teens:
1. What Can Teenagers Do Today To Help Ensure A Healthy Future Emotionally, Physically And Spiritually? Studies reveal that when a child grows up feeling loved by their parents we do not have to worry about their future emotionally, physically or spiritually. The opposite of love is indifference and if one seeks attention through self destructive behavior the end result is obvious. What teenagers can do is abandon their past and all the negativity associated with it and use their anger and energy to change their lives and reparent themselves. “When you let love into your prison it changes all the negative items in it (meaning the experiences in your life) and turns them into something meaningful.” Those are the words of a woman who was abused as a child. Teens can also look for chosen parents who will accept and love them even when their behavior is not liked. These are people who love you no matter what, even when they are critical of your behavior as do most parents and many teachers and religions. So find someone to coach you through life who has had a major loss or illness because they will know what lessons are important for survival.
www.tsachsmd.net 8
Natural Nutmeg September 2013
The most important thing for teenagers to realize is that suicide is not ever the treatment of choice. A young man I know, Tony Johnson who wrote “A Rock and A Hard Place”, was planning to commit suicide. Tony was HIV+ due to sexual abuse by his parents and others. I told him we could get a gun and kill his parents instead. He said, “No I never want to be like them”. You were never meant to eliminate yourself. You were meant to love yourself and your neighbors. What you need to eliminate is that which is killing you physically, emotionally and spiritually. You must not give up the life you want for yourself in order to please others. When you do, you lose your life. You must be willing to lose the untrue self and save your authentic life. You are a divine child so get your baby pictures out and live for that awesome child. And like children and animals, when you need attention and love make noise, move and express your feelings. 2. In Your opinion, What Defines Success And How Can Teens Work To Achieve Success? I have seen many children of millionaires suffering because their parents gave them money, which they were to use in an effort to make more money and be successful. One young man said to me, “My father ruined my life when I was 21. He gave me a million dollars and told me I had to be a success.” What would his father have said if he started a charity with the money? Most parents give their children mottoes to die by and not live by. What is your definition of success. If it is a big estate and lots of money you will never be happy or successful. When speaking to a group of young business owners, all of whom were millionaires I asked, “Is life fair?’ They yelled no louder than any group I have ever spoken to. A young man in therapy for the grief that trying to be a success was causing him said, “When you are a success you are not happy, but when you are happy you are a success”. Decide how you want to serve the world and then go do it. You will be living your life and accomplishing what we are all here to accomplish in our lifetime. And when you enjoy serving in your way, Monday morning will not be a threat to your health and you will never feel like you are working. Because it is only work if there is someplace else you’d rather be.
3. Looking Back Upon Your Life Thus Far, What Are Some Of The Major Lessons You Have Learned That You Would Like To Share With Today’s Teenagers? First, accept the fact that you are mortal and don’t waste your lifetime doing what you do not want to do. Learn to say no to the world and yes to yourself. Next, remember what my parents told me. When a decision was to be made there was only one way to decide: “Do what will make you happy.” When troubles and difficulties occurred, which are inevitable, I heard, “God is redirecting you something good will come of this”. When material things and finances were involved: “Money is to make life easier for people”. Remember, I came from a minority group. I was loved by my parents, did well in school and got along with God. Understand that a perfect world is a magic trick and not creation. What makes our love and actions meaningful is the fact that we have a choice. Life is a school, so live and learn and remember there are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned. To live happily: Find meaning in your life; Express appropriate anger when you are not treated with respect; Ask for help when you need it—do not deny your needs and feelings; Say no when appropriate; Find time to play; Use your feelings in a positive way to help protect you and redirect your life rather than turning to drugs that numb; Live an authentic life and not a role. Remember we were meant to be human beings and not human doings. Drugless Healing of PTSD
By Debra Gibson, ND
P
TSD: it’s an acronym that hardly needs explaining these days. It seems that every week another horrific event occurs for which post-traumatic stress disorder may be either a cause or a probable effect. The condition has existed since time immemorial. Earlier terms, including “soldier’s heart,” “shell shock” and “battle fatigue,” became “PTSD” after the Vietnam War, as the nation struggled to deal with so many lives ruined by drug and alcohol abuse, troubled relationships, and social alienation. In the wake of 9/11 and many homegrown tragedies, and as waves of modern warriors return home to the stresses and strangeness of ‘normal’ life, awareness of the aftereffects of trauma and intense stress has seeped into our daily lives and our cultural consciousness. That’s not entirely a bad thing. After all, traumatic stress has been with us for as long as violence, war, and catastrophe have intruded on the illusory safety of human existence. But for society to learn to recognize the downstream consequences of trauma on mind, spirit and body, and to begin to identify paths to recovery and wholeness—to discover that there are paths to recovery, and to explore, illuminate and broaden access to them—is what may set apart our time, with its particular mix of seemingly senseless tragedy and psychic pain, from times that have gone before. The formal psychiatric definition of post-traumatic stress disorder is evolving, and in the recently released, revised diagnostic manual for psychiatry (the DSM-5), PTSD was moved from the category of anxiety disorders to a new category of trauma- and stressor-related conditions, a change which implicitly acknowledges its complexity. This new grouping of stress-induced psychological issues includes Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), which shares some characteristics of PTSD but which resolves after a relatively short period of time.
Signs of Post-Traumatic Stress According to the formal definition, post-traumatic stress effects may follow a life-threatening, terrifying, and/or horrific event or events. Women experience post-traumatic symptoms more than men, and multiple traumas increase vulnerability to PTSD. Common characteristics of someone who has PTSD include re-experiencing the trauma, avoidance behaviors, negative changes in mood and brain function, and hyper-arousal (it should be noted that post-traumatic stress manifests somewhat differently in young children). 10
Natural Nutmeg September 2013
These characteristics may be expressed in some of the following ways: • Intrusive, recurring and distressing memories, thoughts, images, dreams, or flashbacks of the traumatic event. • Emotional numbness or deadness, feelings of detachment from others, and possibly difficulty experiencing loving feelings. Feelings of guilt or blame (of self or others) are common. • Avoidance of thoughts, conversations, places, people, activities— of anything that might trigger memories of the trauma and cause distress or anxiety. Common tools for avoidance include numbing behaviors such as alcohol and other substance abuse. • Apathy toward formerly pleasurable activities. In general, a pessimistic view of the future; it may be difficult to make future plans. • There may be an attraction to reckless or destructive behaviors. • Symptoms related to hyper-arousal and hyper-alertness: problems in getting to sleep or staying asleep; irritability, possibly accompanied by anger and volatility; difficulty concentrating; increased vigilance; an increased startle reaction. Chronic hyper-arousal may manifest as depression. When a person has experienced these symptoms and behaviors for one month, he or she is considered to have a post-traumatic stress disorder; when these issues persist beyond three months, PTSD is considered chronic. The reality, though, is that many more people experience post-traumatic stress effects than meet the DSM criteria—their lives may be limited by anxiety or panic attacks, depression, insomnia, emotional reactivity, fatigue, and bodily pain, but they don’t associate their emotional or health issues with prior trauma, they just think that this is how life is and always will be for them. Childhood abuse, domestic violence, illness, injury, and ongoing financial stress are some of the preconditions for a life marked by post-traumatic wounds to psyche and body, unless these wounds are healed.
Fear Circuitry In recent decades attention has turned to investigating underlying mechanisms for PTSD. The defining characteristics and behaviors of PTSD are thought to be the external expression of inner effects of trauma on mind, body and spirit, through activation of what has been called “fear circuitry;” complex patterns of reaction and interaction within the brain and the body in response to severe
stress and trauma which impair healthy thinking, feeling and function. It’s as though the fear switch gets flipped to on and can’t be shut off. The sufferer swings between traumatic memories of the past and apprehension of potential threats in the future, unable to find a place in the present. In the words of Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., a pioneering research clinician in post-traumatic stress disorder and the neurobiology of trauma, “People with PTSD lose their way in the world. Their bodies continue to live in an internal environment of the trauma. We all are biologically and neurologically programmed to deal with emergencies, but time stops in people who suffer from PTSD. That makes it hard to take pleasure in the present because the body keeps replaying the past.”
Stop Saying Post-traumatic Stress is Incurable! Until recently, well-intentioned attempts to treat PTSD often have done at least as much harm as good. Traditional talk therapies can re-traumatize the sufferer and have poor rates of success for PTSD. Traditional pharmaceuticals may manage, with varying degrees of effectiveness, the depression, anxiety, insomnia, anger, and substance abuse which often accompany post-traumatic stress. But neither approach effectively engages with the deep and interconnected wounds to mind, body and spirit that make up PTSD. The failure of standard treatment approaches has contributed to the misperception not just by the public (assisted by the media) but also by much of the healthcare community, including many mental health professionals, that PTSD is a tough nut to crack, so sufferers had best just learn to live with it. As Belleruth Naparstek, a psychotherapist who has developed guided imagery for prevention and treatment of traumatic stress disorders, observed in an article entitled “Note to Colleagues: Please Stop Saying Post-Traumatic Stress Is Incurable”: “You can recover from post-traumatic stress. Certainly, you can significantly reduce—not just manage—its symptoms. But—and here’s the thing—not with traditional treatment. The problem is, a lot of my colleagues don’t know this yet. So they go about it in traditional ways and pronounce the condition incurable, based on the results they get.”

is embedded, creating safe detours around fear-damaged brain circuitry to allow the traumatized to gradually integrate their memories and find a way back to a present they can live in.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) EMDR uses eye movement techniques (or sometimes sound or other sensory stimuli) under the supervision of a trained EMDR psychotherapist to allow the brain to reprocess traumatic memories. Recognized
as an effective therapy for PTSD by more than two dozen research studies, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Department of Defense/Veteran’s Administration, it can significantly shorten recovery time and because it only requires the patient/client to focus briefly on the trauma, it is less likely than traditional talk therapy to activate the trauma. As its discoverer, psychologist Francine Shapiro notes, “Three EMDR studies have reported an 84 to 100% remission of PTSD from a single trauma in the equivalent of three 90-minute reprocessing sessions… while complex PTSD…will definitely need more extensive treatment than three sessions, in most cases it doesn’t take long for

the client to derive benefit. It’s not like some versions of talk therapy where change is not expected to be apparent for many months, or even years.”
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy In trauma-centered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy the therapist and client work together to revise or correct inaccurate or distorted thoughts about the traumatic memory. It generally includes aspects of exposure therapy, in which tolerance to the trauma is developed by means of gradual exposure to a memory or other trigger. The drop-out rate for CBT is about 50%, presumably because even gradual re-exposure to the traumatic memory can be overwhelming for many clients.
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) MBSR is a widely available eight-week program (with meetings once weekly) in which participants learn techniques promoting self-awareness, the integration of body and mind, and non-judgmental acceptance of their experience in the present. MBSR, based on Buddhist and other ancient meditative practices, was introduced as a program in 1979 by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., at the University of Massachusetts. It has been found to be effective for a broad range of issues, including chronic pain, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, substance abuse, and adjustment to life stress, such as serious illness. It is emerging as one of the most effective approaches for both treatment and prevention of post-traumatic stress. A recent study from the University of Michigan, in association with the Veteran’s Administration Ann Arbor, looked at the effects of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, which combines mindfulness training with cognitive therapy (as mentioned above). After the eight-week program, 73% of patients/clients in the MBCT group experienced significant improvement, while only 33% of the traditional treatment group noted improvement. Other studies of mindfulness training for PTSD show on average about an 80% reduction in symptoms, and a drop-out rate which is virtually zero.
Guided Imagery Guided Imagery is a variation on meditation in which dialogues tailored to address the anxiety, depression, grief, insomnia, lowered self-esteem, and traumatic wounds of PTSD are listened to several times weekly 12
Natural Nutmeg September 2013
on an MP3 or CD player. I think of guided imagery as the scenic route of meditation, because the dialogues often involve imagining oneself in a natural environment. Because they can be used at home, they can be an excellent adjunct to EMDR, CBT, or other supervised treatments. A recent study of guided imagery combined with healing touch in returning veterans showed a significant reduction in PTSD and related symptoms after six twice-weekly sessions, compared to usual treatment.
Yoga Trauma-sensitive yoga promotes integration of mind and body, ability to achieve inner quiet, calm and relaxation, and greater comfort with the present moment.
Body-Centered Psychotherapies Body-Centered Psychotherapies, such as Somatic Experiencing, recognize that trauma causes memory to be somaticized, or stored in the body. They may be blended with other treatment approaches, and encourage body awareness as a way to regulate the overwhelmed nervous system of the traumatized and open the door to healing.
Neurofeedback Neurofeedback techniques use low-frequency electrical signals to help the brain shift into a state in which it is easier to process emotions, moving it out of stuck patterns induced by trauma. Improvement may be felt in one to three sessions.

Holistic Treatment of PTSD A holistic approach to physical health issues acknowledges the participation of the mind and spirit in the healing process. Conversely, truly holistic care for PTSD combines treatment of the mind and emotions with support of physical health, including the hormonal and biochemical interconnections between mind and body. A synergistic approach offers the greatest potential for authentic and lasting recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder.

In my practice I rely on functional medicine testing of stress hormones, neurotransmitters, blood sugar, thyroid function, and a range of stress-modulating nutrients to identify the unique patterns of imbalance in an individual with stress disorder. With this information, natural approaches such as nutrient replenishment, herbal support, and lifestyle modification can be used to promote health and balance of body, mind, and emotions.

The adrenal glands secrete hormones that generate the stress response. The “fight or flight” stress hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine (also known as adrenaline and noradrenaline) and cortisol, the hormone secreted by the adrenals in response to longerterm stress, are a big part of our emergency response mechanism, and they are central to much of the mental and physical experience of post-traumatic stress. The adrenal stress response might be thought of as the interface between the brain and the body: have a stressful thought or memory, and the adrenals respond by putting out stress hormones; on the other hand, over stimulate the adrenals (by a near-miss of a car accident, for instance) and brain function is affected. A damaging effect of intense or chronic stress is disruption of the lines of communication between the brain and the adrenals, resulting in loss of the normal regulation by the brain of stress hormone output. Problems with sleep (both getting to sleep and staying asleep) and difficulty getting going in the morning are symptomatic of this communication breakdown. Phosphatidyl serine is a natural supplement which, in doses of 200-300 mg. at bedtime, can help repair the stress-induced damage to brain cells and over time (it may take two to three months, depending on the level of repair necessary) can restore healthier stress-hormone balance and better quality sleep. The herb rhodiola rosea has been used for centuries as a tool for rebalancing stressed adrenal glands. As there are a number of species of rhodiola; it is important to obtain a supplement that has been assayed for the level of rosavins, which are the compounds thought to be necessary for therapeutic effect. While in my practice I work with formulations standardized to contain 16% rosavins, those available to the public usually contain between two and five percent of these compounds, and about 250 mg. per capsule of the herb itself. Taken in the morning (a conservative dose is two to three capsules), it can support stable energy; paradoxically, three or four capsules taken an hour or so before bedtime can promote more restful sleep (please note: it may have a stimulating effect and interfere with sleep if taken too close to bedtime).

Neurotransmitters, the biochemical messengers of the brain that affect mood, sleep, energy, motivation, concentration and more, can be severely thrown out of balance by intense or prolonged states of stress. Once a pattern of neurotransmitter imbalance has been identified through testing, natural supplements can help restore balance. For purposes of promoting greater calm, better sleep, and increased well-being, I think of GABA (I work with a GABA metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more easily than standard preparations); the amino acids Taurine, Theanine, Glycine, Glutamine, and 5-hydroxy Tryptophan; and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), which is essential for neurotransmitter metabolism. In addition, the Omega-3 fatty acids, most readily obtained from a high-quality marine oil supplement, nourish brain cells and reduce inflammation that amplifies
stress hormone levels, and are fundamental to any nutritional support program for PTSD.
Practice Self-Care Poor habits of self-care often go along with PTSD, such as a tendency to skip meals, to eat and drink too many nutrient-depleted and nutrient-depleting items like coffee, alcohol, sweets and refined flours, and to let go of regular exercise and time spent outdoors. Unhealthy patterns of eating and drinking ramp up the stress response, in part because they cause unstable blood sugar, which triggers stress hormone secretion. They also literally starve the brain of the even supply of glucose (which it gets from whole foods eaten regularly throughout the day) it needs to function well. So be sure to eat three meals a day, and be sure one of them is breakfast; also eat two or three snacks between those meals, even if that means the regular meals are a bit smaller than you’re used to. Eat more nutrient dense, whole foods, like fish, fowl, starchy beans and starchy vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds, crunchy veggies, and fruit. Eat fewer processed and ‘white foods’ made with refined flours and sugars; limit or eliminate caffeine and alcohol—plenty of water and herbal teas are better choices. Exercise increases oxygen supply to the brain, has been shown to increase serotonin and endorphin production (feel-good brain bio-chemicals), and helps balance blood sugar. Benefits of exercising outdoors include stimulation of the pineal gland by natural light (which promotes melatonin production, which improves sleep, mood, and immune function), increased production of the antidepressant vitamin D, and a chance to take in the nourishing beauty and healing ‘green’ energy of Mother Nature. “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein It is a truism that if we want change to happen, we need to take action. One of the greatest impediments to healing of people suffering from PTSD is their reluctance to seek treatment, and then to stay in treatment long enough to feel results. This is tragic, given the often life-or-death stakes of PTSD. Although no single approach can create immediate resolution of the complex pain of post-traumatic stress, those outlined here are some of the most effective, least stressful, and direct routes to relief and authentic healing for the disorder currently available. Working with multiple modalities (for instance, EMDR with MBSR, trauma-centered www.NaturalNutmeg.com

yoga and guided imagery) can enhance their positive effects and create a safety net for the healing process. Combining such inner work with healing and care for the body as a whole and the body systems involved with the stress response eases the way for healing on every level. But for recovery to begin, it is necessary to take the first step on one path toward wholeness. Take that step. Healing the Brain with Alpha-Stim Technology
“Tell me, sweet lord, what is’t that takes from thee thy stomach, pleasure and thy golden sleep? Why dost thou bend thine eyes upon the earth, and start so often when thou sit’st alone?” (Shakespeare, Henry IV)
T
hese lines are from Lady Percy, as she worries about her husband’s wellbeing after learning of his imminent plans to leave their castle and begin a rebellion against King Henry IV. After these insightful observations, Lady Percy goes on to mourn Lord Percy’s “thick-eyed musings and cursed melancholy,” and his restless sleep, filled with murmurs of remembered battles. She notes his brow, at times beaded with sweat, and the grimaces in his face and wonders what “heavy business” this is. Lady Percy, wonder no longer. It’s posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Earliest identified as a war-related mental breakdown, PTSD is known to potentially affect anyone who has suffered a violently traumatic event outside the bounds of what is considered to be normative experience. Some who grow up in rough neighborhoods may argue about the definition of what is normative but we know that PTSD can occur in children and the elderly, and that it can happen after abuse, rape, natural disasters and violent crimes.
Alpha-Stim – Safe and Effective PTSD is quite treatable, despite what some think. I’m going to focus here on an effective, very safe and easily available treatment that too few people know anything about: Alpha-Stim. “It’s a fantastic therapy, and much better than medication,” says Jenni Leach of Veritas
Psychotherapy and Neurofeedback (Great Falls, MT) in a 2007 article regarding AlphaStim treatment. “Sometimes our patients have such a reduction in their symptoms that they don’t need talk therapy.” Alpha-Stim is a prescriptive electromedical device that uses very small amounts of electricity in the form of a specialized (and proprietary) waveform. It is proven to produce more alpha waves in the brain. Two electrodes clip onto the ear lobes and send this mild current through the brain. This kind of electric brain stimulation is called cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) and is a far cry from electroshock treatment–about as different as blowing out a candle is from a tornado, or as a flashlight is from a bolt of lightning. Although there are a number of CES devices on the market, there is a fair amount of variability between them and none have the data and scientific support associated with the proprietary Alpha-Stim technology. Most people have heard of brainwaves, and many are familiar with delta waves,
that brain wave most frequently associated with sleep. There also are a number of other brain waves, including alpha waves. Alpha waves are most associated with feelings of calm and focus; a relaxed state of alertness. The Alpha-Stim current is believed to stimulate groups of nerve cells that produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and acetylcholine, and is thought to help the brain achieve a more homeostatic, healing state through habituation to this gentle alpha wave.
FDA Approved Alpha-Stim has been FDA approved for anxiety, depression, and insomnia since 1992. Consistent with this use, one quickly growing area of application has been PTSD, a disorder that includes each of these three symptoms as part of the overall problem (anxiety, depression and insomnia). I have used Alpha-Stim technology myself and in my practice since my first introduction to the device while I was a faculty member at

measure differences in a research study they usually are looking for a statistically significant difference between one group and another. This basically means that the difference they see is considered to be a difference that is highly unlikely (at least 95% unlikely) to have happened just by chance alone. A statistically significant difference could end up being a pretty small difference if the study has enough people in it. So if you are in a group of 1000 people in a study and you take a depression test that gives you a score of 30, and there is another group of 1000 people in the same study whose scores average 33, this difference could be considered statistically significant. But that might not mean anything to you because it might not be clinically significant. That is to say, a drop of 3 in your depression score doesn’t feel any different. A clinically significant change essentially means that the score change makes an actual difference in your life. There are all kinds of statistical and methodological rules to follow in order to show clinically significant change in a scientific study, and as much fun as that is (seriously, I do think it’s kind of fun, and that’s because I am a queen nerd) what really matters is this alone: it makes a difference for you. So if Alpha-Stim works for your friend but not for you, it doesn’t matter what the science says about it. The thing you are most interested in is that it works for you. This is why testimonial and case-study evidence can be compelling for many people—it gives them hope, and it gives scientists more things to study and include in their methodology.
Scientific Evidence Supports Alpha-Stim In addition to significant clinical support, there is valid, methodologically sound scientific evidence that supports Alpha-Stim as effective in the treatment of anxiety, depression and insomnia. As much evidence as can be published can also be found on the company website, which encourages a transparent view of all relevant research (no cherry-picking). A brief review of this evidence shows randomized clinical trials supporting recovery from depression, between group comparisons that show significant drops in anxiety, and even data that indicate improved attention, help in smoking cessation and relief from fibromyalgia. There is actually so much data it is far beyond the scope of this article to review it. Rather, this article is simply to alert you to this alternative treatment that may provide the help you want with none of the side effects you don’t want.
Used by the Military to Treat PTSD, and Covered by TriCare The largest consumer of Alpha-Stim treatment at present is the military, and they are using it mostly to treat PTSD, and also to help treat pain, anxiety, depression and insomnia without PTSD. Alpha-Stim has been used in over half of all VA hospitals, is often paid for by TriCare for active-duty service members, and is available to all patients at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence. One testimonial specific to PTSD from the Alpha-Stim website reports: “I went
through the warrior combat stress reset program 1 year ago. They issued all of us the Alpha-Stim 100. Since then I use it periodically when needed to just relax. I’ve also used it to relieve and prevent full blown anxiety attacks. I don’t know what it is about this machine that helps so much but it does what no other medication has been able to do for me. I give it 5 stars all the way around.” (Matthew, from Texas, quoted at www.alpha-stim.com). Typical of many forms of alternative medicine, Alpha-Stim has been maligned by the medical profession. One can only speculate as to why. In a feature Health Watch from CBS Chicago (February 8, 2012), a psychiatrist (Herbert Fox, MD) weighed in on Alpha-Stim, saying, “There are some reports of people who experienced relief from it, but there’s no scientifically demonstrated compelling scientific evidence that it is an effective treatment.” A more accurate statement would include the phrase, “I don’t know of any compelling evidence.” Scientific studies abound, easily available in pdf form on the Alpha-Stim webpage. Another problem that gets in the way of our thinking about alternative treatments for difficulties such as PTSD is that we rely on biological outcomes to tell us whether or not a treatment works. That is, we like to measure what is measureable, and plan accordingly. Studies are designed based on what is measureable whether or not it is the most relevant or compelling outcome. But what if there are other, more compelling and helpful outcomes that are not biological? In discussing this aspect of research with the founder of Alpha-Stim, Dr. Daniel Kirsch, he brought up an idea he’d been reading about: electrical outcomes vs. biological outcomes. Electrical activities in the body are not always biological, he said, and they cannot be measured like biological outcomes are measured. Nonetheless they appear to be a real aspect of the healing experience as a whole. Basically, there’s a lot to the human experience that we just can’t put into a test tube. Not a surprising thesis, but one that we too often tend to forget in our over-reliance on scientific validation as the only measure of whether a treatment works or not. Dr. Earthman, an Army psychiatrist writing from Iraq, notes the following in a published letter to Alpha-Stim, also found on the website: “I was taken by surprise at how many patients were thrilled to have an alternative to medication. Not every patient responds to Alpha-Stim treatment but my observation is that Alpha-Stim is as robust as medication treatment. The amazing thing is that there really are no side effects.”
The company reports millions of treatments completed without a single adverse event. Possible side effects do include mild, transient dizziness and/or nausea resulting from stimulation that spreads to the inner ear (immediately correctable by lowering the current level) and possibly some temporary reddening at the electrode contact area. In a post-marketing study given to 500 consumers, 94.4% reported no side effects at all, 1.2% reported dizziness, 0.4% reported nausea, and 0.6% reported skin irritation. Alpha-Stim certainly has been shown to work in the scientific arena. I have seen it work in the clinical arena, and there are scores of satisfied users across the world. The company is growing at the rate of about 20% per year, and that alone indicates that something is working well. Now you, the reader, know about a viable alternative to treatment for PTSD, anxiety, depression and insomnia. Like I often say to my clients: Might help, won’t hurt. Alternatives just give you more options to choose from and more power in the choosing. Feeling more powerful in itself is helpful when treating a disorder like PTSD. Effective Relief from Stress, Anxiety and PTSD Hypnosis & Thought Field Therapy
By Diane Bahr-Groth, CH, TFT-Adv
I
n today’s fast paced and often frightening, chaotic world we may find ourselves, or our loved ones, filled with stress, fear and anxiety. But there is hope. Hypnosis and Thought Field Therapy™ (TFT) are natural and effective ways to reduce the severity of negative thoughts and feelings related to anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Together, these stress-reducing techniques can create almost instantaneous life-changing experiences and result in feelings of deep peace and relaxation. It is completely natural for one to feel anxious, sad, fearful, and even detached after a traumatic event. However, if negative thoughts, feelings and emotions linger and you continually experience a sense of fear and helplessness, or feel haunted by upsetting memories, you may be suffering from PTSD.
The High Cost of Suffering If you are unable to release or heal the emotions related to the trauma, you may experience feelings of increased anxiety, fear, guilt, sadness, vulnerability, a lack of worthiness, shame, anger and even panic attacks. Limiting decisions or limiting beliefs may develop, causing a loss of interest in life, distrust, and avoidance of things that may remind you of the event. Sleeplessness, hopelessness, numbness, lack of appetite or perhaps self-sabotaging responses may develop, such as emotional eating, gambling or another addictive behavior. Traumatic events can be the root cause of illness, anxiety, depression, and pain.

Thought Field Therapy Can Reduce Negative Thoughts in Minutes TFT is one of the most powerful, dramatic, rapid, and effective therapies ever developed. TFT is a natural and distinctive protocol of healing that works with the body’s energy system. Its unique therapeutic process can elicit immediate, lasting and unparalleled results for those tormented by a wide variety of problems such as fears, phobias, anxiety, stress and PTSD, often within minutes. Dr. Roger Callahan, a noted clinical psychologist, began exploring alternative therapies in the early 1980s, searching for a faster and better way to help those suffering from emotional distress. After years of research he developed TFT, a simple and easy protocol that has a remarkably high rate of effectiveness. The use and discovery of the TFT system has been at the forefront of the new field of energy psychology and brief therapy. It’s a powerful system that integrates the sciences of acupuncture, the meridian system and applied kinesiology with the associated emotional problem to successfully access the root cause of the issue and eliminate negative and often debilitating emotional and physical responses. While stimulating specific meridian points in a precise order and thinking about the upsetting issue, one utilizes the power of the body’s own energy system to release the unwanted negative response. TFT techniques can alleviate emotional, spiritual and even physical distress with profound and measurable results. PTSD often is associated with the traumas of war-scarred veterans and first responders such as police, fire, and medical teams but it also can be caused by any shocking or overwhelming event either witnessed or experienced. PTSD can be caused by any trauma such as unexpected loss, accidents, natural disasters, war, physical violence, emotional or sexual abuse, or terrorist attacks. Those experiences can result in flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety. As they say, “time heals all wounds,” but if one is unable to move forward with life and begin to feel better as time passes perhaps those symptoms are PTSD.

state of deep relaxation. Traditionally, while in this peaceful state, you become more focused and actually have a heightened sense of awareness, and the natural endorphin and serotonin levels of the body are increased. Hypnosis has proven to be an effective, safe and inexpensive method to create desired physical and emotional change, positive results, and implement self-healing where traditional medicine has often failed. Hypnosis can naturally help you overcome the mental or emotional obstacles that keep you from living life to its fullest, empowering you to accomplish your goals. Western medicine is only now beginning to understand that health and illness are related to our emotional state of inner harmony and balance. Simply stated, wellness is directly connected to our thought fields, i.e., our automatic thoughts and responses to life. Releasing negative thoughts and emotions with TFT and using Therapeutic Hypnosis can unlock the power of the body and mind, helping you to feel happier and healthier and to once again discover the natural joy of life.
It is a well-established fact that Hypnotherapy, also known as Therapeutic Hypnosis, can be an effective tool for everything from behavior modification to success and motivation, healing, PTSD, and even pain control. Many other problems, such as stress, fears, anxiety, phobias, pain, insomnia, poor study, memory and learning habits, self-esteem issues, weight loss, and smoking cessation are commonly helped through the use of hypnosis. Hypnosis is widely recognized by the American Medical Association and researchers as a safe, natural and enjoyable state of deep physical and emotional relaxation. The ethical use of hypnosis is seen in a variety of fields, including medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sports, self-improvement, behavioral modification, and education, and can improve a wide spectrum of conditions, challenges and issues. It can alleviate negative thoughts, feelings and beliefs and eliminate emotional and psychological blockages that prevent one from accomplishing personal goals. Hypnosis is not sleep, it’s simply a natural, calm and tranquil state of conscious awareness. During a hypnosis session a trained hypnotist uses specific suggestions to guide you into a comfortable

Statistically significant results were obtained with all problems and symptoms treated with TFT in a 1999 study at Kaiser Behavioral Health Services. These problems included anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, anger, and anxiety due to medical condition, bereavement, and chronic pain, along with others.

Acupuncture Relieves Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Ushers in Healing By Kara Burkhart, ND, LAc
A
cupuncture is often used to decrease physical pain but its ability to ease emotional pain is equally profound. It can be useful during incidents of immediate stress and even years following a traumatic event. Worldwide, acupuncture is considered an effective, drug-free component to crisis response. Recent examples include acupuncture trauma clinics that were set up in response to the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, the Boston marathon bombing, Calgary flooding, and in Nepal for women and children survivors of human trafficking. Increasingly, one will find an acupuncturist inside a mobile Red Cross center. The U.S. military has been using acupuncture for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) since 2008 and continues to expand its program.
The Debilitating Symptoms of PTSD Stress, a normal response to a traumatic event, can make a person feel out of control and uncomfortable. Fear, stress, anxiety, horror, night terrors, despair, and a sense of hopelessness are among the debilitating components of PTSD, as is the experience of feeling unsafe and ungrounded. Categorized as an anxiety disorder, PTSD stems from an emotional disturbance that was caused by a traumatic event.
Acupuncture Calms the Mind Studies show that acupuncture can reduce symptoms of stress, which allows a body to begin the healing process. Acupuncture calms the mind and helps people regain composure. A significant benefit of acupuncture is that it does not require an individual to actually talk about the event, which may not be possible during periods of intense anxiety. And, since it is common for sufferers of PTSD to self-medicate with alcohol, drugs or excess eating, calming the mind is a first step towards breaking these addictions. Acupuncture promotes a sense of serenity and wellbeing and is an effective option for treatment of PTSD because of its roots in multiple aspects of traditional Chinese medicine. The diverse symptoms of PTSD can be explained and addressed by the comprehensive theory in Chinese medicine, which is founded on the premise that no dualism exists between body and spirit. The body is the material basis for the mind. A standard acupuncture prescription addresses common symptoms of exposure to trauma or PTSD by corresponding to the organ/meridian energy lines. This is why acupuncture is a comprehensive approach to emotional disturbances. 22

Body and Mind Pairings in Chinese Medicine Fear and Kidney Energy Paranoia, insecurity and a sense of defeat are often associated with disturbances of the organ system/energy in the kidney meridians. Research shows that PTSD patients process a traumatic memory differently than other memories. Traumatic memory tends to promote a cycle of fear and stress response. Feelings of numbness and an inability to get out of bed can be linked to total depression of kidney energy.
Stress and Liver Energy A disturbance in liver Qi presents as surges of anger, despair, and insomnia. The memory of a traumatic event causes erratic and stagnant energy in the liver meridian. PTSD is associated with a specific pattern in which the brain holds the memory. While most memories fade, memories of traumatic events do not; they can trigger the release of stress-provoking chemicals in the brain repetitively. The perception of the event is different from other memories as it is associated with surges of the emotions connected with that memory. Commonly referred to as flashbacks, these painful memories perpetuate the cycle.
Grief and Lung Energy Disturbances of the energy flowing in the lung meridian are strongly associated with loss, anxiety, bouts of sadness, and an erratic flow of emotions. An acupuncture treatment inherently addresses lung conditions because patients are seated or lying still for the duration of the session, which generally lasts an hour. Acupuncture requires the patient to focus on the breath and this exercise naturally restores regularity to the flow of air through the lungs.
Depression and Heart Energy An inability to connect with others, a lack of enjoyment in life, palpitations, and insomnia are all associated with the heart in traditional Chinese medicine. The heart organ/meridian is understood to house ‘shen’ or the spirit of the individual. PTSD can be an expression of what is known as the broken heart archetype.
How Acupuncture is Applied A typical acupuncture treatment protocol to relieve posttraumatic stress includes five thin, sterilized, disposable needles applied gently to points in each ear. Acupuncturists create a safe, quiet space that invites and encourages a person to feel calm. Patients describe experiencing a positive, transformative effect that occurs quickly and can last for a week or more. Studies have shown that acupuncture twice per week for 12 weeks is of benefit to those experiencing PTSD. Twenty-four months later, the beneficial effects are reported to continue. Acupuncture is most successful when it is a component of a holistic plan tailored to the individual. Many healing practices exist that are easy to learn, including mantra meditation, mindfulness meditation, metta meditation, qigong, conscious breathing (counting to three with each in-breath and each out-breath, for example), progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, tai chi, and self-acupressure. Art, journaling or expressive dance also can help ease the mind. Even simply connecting with nature can be calming and as easy as taking a walk, enjoying a garden, or sitting at a park. Kara Burkhart is a naturopathic physician and licensed acupuncturist practicing at Salud Primary Care and Integrative Medicine in Farmington, CT and West Hartford Yoga. She has a passion for finding natural solutions for anxiety, depression, and PTSD. See ad on page 19.

Nutritional Enzyme Therapy for Cancer
M
ost people are familiar with the word “oncology,” and for many it is an area of medicine that evokes anxiety or fear. Cancer is a degenerative disease that is often deemed a death sentence, particularly in the advanced or late stages of the disease. The SEER Cancer Statistics Review (CSR) provides an annual report of cancer incidences in the U.S., including risk factors, survival rates and cancer mortality rates; the numbers are published by the National Cancer institute (www.cancer.gov). Despite advances in the conventional oncological standard of care, which generally consists of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, as well as education initiatives regarding cancer prevention, the incidence of cancer in the United States continues to increase steadily. Sadly, numerous cases of cancer are diagnosed during the later stages of the disease. There are four stages associated with most cancer types, with the first two stages

having the best prognoses. When diagnosed in the later stages, when the cancer cells have left the original site of formation and have invaded surrounding tissues, or entered the lymphatic system, the outcome is not as favorable. This invasion by these malignant (from the Latin word mal, meaning bad) cells is called metastasis, and is the hallmark of cancer stages III and IV. Individuals who have unfavorable outcomes post-treatment or who have experienced a recurrence of their cancer post-conventional treatment may seek out alternative modes of treatment, either as a complement to conventional therapies or in place of conventional methods of treatment, when given only months to live or referred to hospice. Statistics have shown that even after receiving chemotherapy and radiation, life expectancy is five years with a high risk of reoccurrence for many forms of cancer. This outcome is logical if the underlying cause of the disease is not addressed.
Taking Charge Fortunately, there is an emergence of proactive individuals who, when given such a diagnosis, will immediately become advocates of their health and managers of their bodies. They often will turn to the internet and other forms of social media in order to research alternative forms of treatment for their specific cancer. Alas, it would take a great expenditure of mental energy and valuable time to sort through the potpourri of information that can be offered by the internet, much of which lacks credibility. A web search for alternative cancer treatments may produce a plethora of modalities ranging from Ayurveda to acupuncture, Essiac tea, Budwig diet, Kushi diet, Cellect powder, botanical medicine, nutritional enzyme therapies, homeopathy, antioxidants, intravenous therapies, supplements, and many other therapeutic holistic practices. Several legitimate organizations, such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, cover a variety of alternative treatment options, although in some cases the information is slightly skewed in favor of conventional modalities. In addition to these resources, one can simply contact the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians for a directory of licensed naturopathic physicians who specialize in oncology. A naturopathic oncologist can decrease patient anxiety by assisting them with the selection of scientifically and/or clinically proven alternative cancertreatment modalities. They understand the biochemical and physiological mechanisms of the body. They also are generally well versed in conventional oncology treatments, and thus are able to help patients determine
which supplements are contraindicated for use in conjunction with radiation and chemotherapy, as well as identifying those that have a synergistic effect. In keeping with the “first do no harm” tenet of naturopathic medicine, as well as with Hippocrates’ statement, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,” I have chosen to focus on the benefits of nutritional enzyme therapy and its applications in the treatment of chronic debilitating diseases such as cancer. In addition, I’ve received training in nutritional therapy from the Gerson Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to the holistic treatment of cancer and other degenerative diseases. In a review of the pioneers who used enzymes as a therapeutic modality, credit must be given to Dr. John Beard; Dr. William D. Kelly, DDS; Dr. Max Gerson, MD; and more recently to Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, MD.
Leaders in the Alternative Treatment of Cancer Dr. Beard’s work on enzymes in the early 1900s was published in the Lancet, a British journal of medicine, in 1902. Dr. Beard first worked with the pancreatic enzyme trypsin, which he proposed played a primary role in the body’s defense against cancer, and which he believed could be used as a treatment modality for cancer. He later published “The Enzyme Treatment of Cancer and Its Scientific Basis.” Dr. William Kelley believed that the origins of cancer could be found in an individual’s inability to manufacture and effectively utilize protein. He believed that if the disorder could not be corrected, the result was tumor development. He therefore hypothesized that pancreatic enzymes involved in protein digestion, (proteolytic enzymes) were instrumental in defending the body against cancer. He believed that pancreatic enzymes were not restricted to the organs of the digestive system but rather that they also were secreted into the bloodstream, and contributed to the body’s defense. He believed that certain pancreatic enzymes, especially the proteolytic enzymes, are the body’s first line of defense against malignancy. This theory stands in marked contrast to conventional medicine, which holds that the immune system, with its natural killer cells, protects people against cancer (Nutrition and Cancer,1999). Dr. Max Gerson’s childhood observations of earthworms in soil led him to believe that if soil is deficient of nutrients, or contains toxic products such as herbicides, it repels worms. He was then able to correlate the health of the soil with the quality of food it would produce. He became a proponent of organic food and its benefits in curing chronic diseases. Gerson used the enzymes contained in organic foods, in the form of raw fruit and vegetable juices, and in cooked fruit and vegetables prepared in a way that does not destroy the enzymatic properties of the plants. These specially prepared foods are used to correct nutritional deficits within the individual, thus promoting health and reversing disease. Although his work was rejected by medical institutions and ridiculed by his colleagues, Gerson continued his work, curing chronic diseases including tuberculosis and cancer. His work was published in his book “A Cancer Therapy, the Results of 50 Cases.” His legacy is continued by his daughter Charlotte Gerson at the Gerson Institute in San Diego, California. Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, while completing his fellowship in cancer, immunology and bone marrow transplantation at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City, conducted a formal research study based on the work of Dr. William Kelly, whom he had previously personally encountered. He was impressed by Kelly’s three-component treatment method, which consisted of nutrition, enzyme therapy and detoxification. Gonzalez performed this formal investigation under the mentorship of Dr. Goode, who at that time served as the
President of Memorial Sloan Kettering. One of the three groups of Dr. Kelly’s patients that were studied by Gonzalez consisted of a group of patients who were treated for pancreatic cancer over an eight year span (1974-1982). These patients had completed the full program formulated by Kelley. Gonzalez observed that the results of these patients were astounding in comparison with the success of patients with the same stage and type of cancer treated with conventional medicine. In fact, this group boasted an average survival rate in excess of eight years on Dr. Kelley’s therapy. In a similar fashion to the preceding pioneers of nutritional enzyme therapy, Dr. Gonzalez failed to succeed in publishing Dr. Kelley’s findings. Gonzalez established an alternative medical private practice in New York City where he continues to implement Kelley’s protocol in the treatment of patients with various types and stages of cancer with astounding success. Prompted by the National Cancer Institute, Gonzalez conducted a study of his own in 1999, published in June of the same year. Compared to the implementation of conventional medical treatments for pancreatic cancer and the life expectancy post- treatment that it offers, the results of Gonzalez’s study far exceeded any results obtained by conventional oncology methods. Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Gonzalez and one of his cancer survivors. Gonzalez has been interviewed by the renowned naturopathic physician, Dr. Mercola; the interview can be viewed on his website, Mercola. com. An article regarding Gonzalez’s work also was published in the August-September, 2010 edition of the Townsend Letter. He has penned several books, including the “Trophoblast and the Origins of Cancer,” as well as his experience with Dr. Kelley and his theory called “One Man Alone.” His books can be purchased from New Spring Press or from Amazon. To obtain more information regarding this form of therapy, you may contact Dr. Yvette M. Whitton, at Adonai Optimal Health and Wellness (888) 655-8489. You may also contact the Gerson Institute in San Diego, California (www.Gerson.Org, for a list of Gerson trained physicians in your immediate area. Proper Nutrition is a Must for Beautiful, Healthy Hair
T
hinning hair and hair loss is a problem that plagues many people, male and female, and of all ages. If you have noticed a receding hairline, a wider than usual part, a more visible scalp, or balding patches on your head, you may be suffering from hair loss. If you feel that your hair is thinning, it is important to find the cause and take the proper steps to correct the situation when possible. The hair on our heads grows in a cycle. At any given time, 90% of the hair is in the anagen, or active growing phase of this cycle. The hair next enters the catagen, or transitional phase. During this phase the hair root detaches from the blood supply and the hair follicle shrinks. This allows the follicle to renew itself. The last phase is the telegen, or dormant phase. This phase can last from one to four months, and essentially allows the hair follicle to rest. At the end of the telegen phase, the follicle goes back into the active growing phase, and the new hair pushes the old one out. This is the normal process of shedding and leads to a loss of 50 – 100 hairs a day. In a healthy head all of these hairs are being replaced and the overall thickness of the hair remains the same.Thinning hair and hair loss occurs when the shed hairs are not all replaced, or are replaced with weaker, thinner hairs.
There are many causes of hair loss and it is important to determine which is to blame before attempting any treatment. Because there are several medical conditions that can lead to hair loss, the first step when thinning hair appears is to consult a doctor to rule out a cause that may require medical intervention. Thyroid problems can lead to hormonal imbalances that cause the hair to thin, and scalp infections such as ringworm can cause the hair to fall out. In these cases the hair will usually grow back when the problem is corrected. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes patches of permanent hair loss. Hair will not grow on scar tissue so diseases that leave scars such as lupus or lichen planus, or scarring caused by injury or surgery will also result in areas of permanent hair loss. The most common reason for thinning hair is the aging process. Hair loss due to aging is called androgenic alopecia. The age at which this process starts and the severity of the hair loss is largely determined by genetics. As men age, the hair tends to recede from

the front hairline and the crown. This type of hair loss is commonly known as male pattern baldness. In women, typical hair loss due to age occurs in the top third of the head. Women may notice that their part seems wider with time, or that more of the scalp is visible through the hair. Androgenic alopecia accounts for over 70 percent of hair loss in men and 40 to 50 percent in women. Treatments that include the active ingredients finasteride or minoxidil can slow or stop this process, however it is important to consult a doctor before using these treatments to rule out any interactions or potential side effects. Hair loss can be caused by a variety of medications. In addition to chemotherapy, some medications used to treat depression, arthritis, high blood pressure, and heart disease can cause hair loss. In most cases, the hair will grow back when the medication is discontinued. Both emotional and physical stress can be a contributing factor in hair loss. A death of a loved one, stress at work, or depression can make one susceptible to thinning hair. A physical shock such as a car accident, very high fever, or extreme weight loss can lead to hair loss as well. Any relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or massage therapy that reduce stress and restore balance in life can help to correct and prevent this type of hair loss. Daily exercise is also an important factor in reducing stress as well as promoting overall health. Traction alopecia is caused by too much physical tension on the hair. This is typically seen in women who pull hair back tightly into ponytails and buns, or braid the
hair tightly to the scalp. The tension on the root of the hair weakens the follicle and the hair falls out prematurely. Using elastics that are not meant for hair, or hair elastics with metal parts, can cause breakage, giving the appearance of thinner hair. Use only hair ties and elastics that are labeled non-damaging, and pull the hair back loosely. Finally, nutritional deficiencies, or overall poor nutrition, can lead to thin, weak hair. Vitamin D is especially important in maintaining a strong healthy head of hair. Omega 3 fatty acids and other healthy fats are essential in assisting the body to produce and utilize vitamin D. Vitamin A and beta carotene are necessary nutrients for the production of sebum, which lubricates the hair and scalp and prevents dry brittle hair that can break. Deficiencies in lysine, copper, and zinc have also been shown to cause hair loss. Eat a diet that is rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to ensure healthy levels of these important vitamins and minerals. It is also important to get enough protein in the diet. Hair is made of a protein called keratin, and if the body is deficient in protein the hair will suffer. Since the health of the hair is dependant on the health of the body, proper nutrition is a must for beautiful, healthy hair. reakfast! Plain and simple. We all know by now the importance of eating a healthy, balanced breakfast, so why is it that we still struggle to squeeze it in before we begin our day at work or school? This year, set a goal as a family, that somewhere between the teeth-brushing, hair-combing, gym sneaker-searching and last-minute permission slip signing, we will sit down and enjoy a healthy breakfast. How will you find time during the hurried morning routine? By keeping it simple. Here are a few quick & healthy breakfast ideas to start the day with an energy boost: (Tip: choose local, organic products whenever possible for the greatest concentration of vitamins and nutrients, and for the best flavors!) • Yogurt Parfait (local, grass-fed yogurt, fresh fruit, locally produced honey, organic nuts or granola as a topping) • Hearty Oatmeal with Apples (organic steel cut oatmeal, apples, cinnamon and a drizzle of locally-made maple syrup) • Whole Grain Toast Elvis Style (whole grain bread, organic peanut butter, sliced bananas, a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg) Submitted by Sow Fresh Organics at www.sowfreshorganics.com. Health and Wellness are Important Keys When Promoting Healthy Hair
T
he body functions best with proper nutrients, minerals, and exercise. That’s right..there’s that unavoidable word again….”exercise.” Why is exercise so important for the body? In addition to maintaining and building muscle activity, it helps to reduce the bodies’ stress levels. Exercise is the #1 all natural way to relieve stress. Exercise releases necessary hormones the body can utilize for nourishment. When one is under the pressure of excessive stress, the body requires and depletes more nutrients. This means fewer nutrients are available for the hair, skin, and nails, hence potential unexpected thinning, shedding, or extreme hair loss. Most people feel their normal day to day activities can be considered exercise. If you have to walk down a flight of stairs to get out of your house on the way to work, that can count as your daily exercise or vice versa walking back up the flight up stairs to your bedroom to climb into bed. In actuality, there should be some resistance in order for your body to recognize there’s any exercise activity going on. If you are not exerting yourself when walking down your 13 steps to your car, you probably aren’t exercising. If your daily walk back up the stairs to climb into your bed isn’t improving your health, it’s probably not the routine you want to use as your daily exercise. The Dangers of Sleep Deprivation and Insomnia Symptoms of Sleep Deprivation
A
• Difficulty falling asleep • Waking often during the night • Waking too early and being unable to go back to sleep • Waking up tired, exhausted and not feeling refreshed • Daytime fatigue or exhaustion • Weight Gain • Brain Fog • Difficulty focusing or concentrating • Anxiety, depression, mood swings
Women in the first three months of pregnancy often need several more hours of sleep than usual. The amount of sleep a person needs also increases if they have been deprived of sleep in previous days. Getting too little sleep creates a sleep debt, which is much like being overdrawn at a bank. Eventually, your body will demand that the debt be repaid. People tend to sleep more lightly and for shorter time spans as they get older, although they generally need about the same amount of sleep as they needed in early adulthood. About half of all people over 65 have frequent sleeping problems, such as insomnia, and deep-sleep stages in many elderly people often become very short or stop almost completely. This change may be a normal part of aging, or it may result from medical problems that are common in elderly people and from the medications and other treatments for those problems.
How Much Sleep do You Need?
The Importance of Sleeping Enough
The amount of sleep each person needs depends on many factors, including age. Infants generally require about 16 hours a day, while teenagers need about 9 hours. For most adults, 7 to 8 hours a night appears to be the best amount of sleep, although some may need as few as 5 or as many as 10.
We don’t seem to adapt to getting less sleep than we need. While we may get used to a sleep-depriving schedule, our judgment, reaction time and other functions are still impaired. Yet the widespread practice of burning the candle at both ends has created so much sleep deprivation that what is really abnormal sleepiness is now, erroneously, almost accepted as the norm. Experts say that if you feel drowsy during the day, even during boring activities, you haven’t had enough sleep. If you routinely fall asleep within five minutes of lying down, you probably have severe sleep deprivation, possibly even a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea. Many studies make it clear that sleep deprivation is dangerous. Driver fatigue is responsible for an estimated 100,000 motor vehicle accidents and 1,500 deaths each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Since drowsiness is the brain’s last step before falling asleep, driving while drowsy can— and often does— lead to disaster.
nyone who has ever felt tired in the morning or dozed off in a meeting knows that sleep is important. In fact, getting enough is vital to your well-being. Here’s why you need more shuteye, along with tips to help you get it!
Symptoms of sleep deprivation include:
30

Addressing Underlying Causes
Natural Approaches
Caffeine and other stimulants can’t overcome the effects of severe sleep deprivation, and common sleep medications such as Ambien and Lunesta do not correct the underlying cause of lack of sleep, such as stress, elevated cortisol and adrenalin hormone levels at night, and neurotransmitter imbalances.
Naturopathic ways to improve sleep include stress reduction techniques, progressive relaxation, acupuncture, and nighttime neurotransmitter and adrenal testing. Another common cause of sleep deprivation and insomnia is sleep apnea, which is evaluated in a sleep study in a medical sleep center. Sleep hygiene is important as well. Some good sleep habits include going to bed and waking up at the same time every night, not imbibing in caffeine or alcohol in the second part of the day, and taking time to unwind and relax before going to bed. Try getting seven to eight hours of sleep a night, although the amount of sleep needed is different for everyone. Simple sleep hygiene practices include keeping your sleep space as dark as possible, and eliminating sources of negative stimuli, such as computers, cellphones, and television from the bedroom. Finally, do not watch violent imagery, news, or movies before bed as they can also increase the chance of nightmares. A good alternative is meditation, listening to progressive relaxation CDs, or listening to soothing music.
The Slippery Slope of Sleep Deprivation Activity in the parts of the brain that control emotions, decision-making processes and social interactions is drastically reduced during deep sleep, suggesting that this type of sleep may help people maintain optimal emotional and social functioning. Sleep appears necessary for our nervous systems to work properly. Too little leaves us drowsy and unable to concentrate the next day. It also leads to impaired memory and physical performance. If sleep deprivation continues, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, depression, weight gain and mood swings may develop.

Going Back to School and Staying Healthy!
S
eptember is back-to-school month! The family outings to buy school supplies and new clothes are very likely completed by now. School has already begun for many of our children. The weather is still warm and the sun is shining. Our kids are filled with excitement and anticipation about the new school year. This is the perfect time to think about how to strengthen their immune systems before flu season hits. There are many wonderful strategies that can be implemented to support a healthy body and clear mind. Here are some ideas:
Hand-Washing Habits The beginning of the school year is a great time to remind children to wash their hands regularly. This simple action is vital for prevention. As we all know, our children learn best by watching. Institute a new household rule that upon entering the home after school, work, or other outings/activities, everyone must wash their hands. For younger children, it is helpful to have them sing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ or the ABCs while they wash—this will help them know how long to wash for and make the activity more fun!
Plenty of Sleep Create a more relaxed nighttime schedule that allows for plenty of sleep—rest is an essential ingredient to support a healthy immune system.
Avoid Harmful Snacks Stay away from processed foods and sugary snacks. Many of these foods have a lot of preservatives and other harmful ingredients that can affect the way we learn and behave. They also can make us feel lethargic. Keeping the house free of these types of foods and only offering wholesome snacks will teach our children about better options.
Daily Vegetables and Fruit Vegetables and fruit contain many nutrients and enzymes to support a healthy body. In addition, eating daily vegetables and fruit can support a healthy bowel. Bowel elimination is essential to a healthy immune system.

Drink Lots of Water! Water is required for every function of our body. It is also important for maintaining moisture in the lining inside the nose, which is our first line of defense. This mucous membrane traps dust, dirt, and bacteria and prevents them from getting into the lungs. Drinking five to eight glasses of water daily can help to optimally hydrate our body and maintain this moist membrane.
Nutritional Supplements Nutritional supplements can strengthen our immune system as well. Here are some suggestions: Daily essential fatty acids: Every tissue in our body is made up of cells. The wall of each cell is comprised of essential fatty acids or EFAs. With any trauma or infection, at a cellular level, there is a tear in the wall of one or multiple cells that make up a structure such as an organ or vessel. To repair this tissue, the body needs essential fatty acids. But EFAs are not produced in the body—they have to be included in our diet. Unless we eat two tins of sardines every day, we are lacking optimal essential fatty acids! A great way to get the right amount of EFAs in our diet is to supplement with fish oils. Fish oils house concentrated EFAs. Some options include daily cod liver oil or fish oil gel caps. Daily probiotics: Probiotics provide healthy bacteria to fight off infection and improve immune strength. Daily probiotics help ward off illness. Probiotics can be taken by capsule and also can be found in yogurt. Probiotics also help maintain a healthy bowel. Daily multi-vitamin: Multi-vitamin supplements supply the body with many important vitamins and nutrients that are essential to health. For flu prevention, in particular, it is helpful to supplement with antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin D, which can all be found in a good quality multi-vitamin. Herbs for Immunity: For further flu prevention it may be helpful to supplement with herbs such as Astragalus, Andrographis and Echinacea. These herbs have immune stimulating properties.
Eliminate Gluten In addition to supplementing with good herbs and vitamins, it is equally important to maintain a healthy diet, free of inflammatory foods. Gluten is a pro-inflammatory food, which means that, when ingested, it contributes to more inflammation in the body. Inflammation is at the root of every illness. Eliminating gluten supports greater health and recovery. For children, eliminating gluten can also support quicker recoveries from injuries as well as reductions in common issues such as allergies, learning and behavioral deficits, and more. A good resource on gluten sensitivity and implementing a gluten-elimination diet is: http://www.instituteofimt.com/glutensensitivity.php.
Eliminate Refined/Processed Sugar In addition to eliminating gluten from our diet, it is extremely beneficial to eliminate refined/processed sugar. Certain processed sugars are considered neurotoxic. When the nervous system is exposed to high levels of refined sugars, it promotes a breakdown of our nervous system, including our brain, which is essential to learning and behavior. The following list includes many common processed sugars that should be avoided by everyone, but especially by children as their brains develop: sugar, brown sugar, sucrose, cane sugar/cane syrup, glucose, dextrose, fructose, corn syrup/sugar, sucanat, turbinado, aspartame, nutrasweet, saccharin, equal, and splenda. Some healthier options include natural sweeteners such as raw honey, pure maple syrup, brown rice syrup, blackstrap molasses, stevia, unprocessed fruit juice, raw organic agave, coconut crystals/syrup, date sugar, and palm sugar. Lastly, there have been so many positive changes throughout the country in school cafeterias. More and more schools are working towards offering healthier food options. Take the time to inquire and find out what the options are. By asking questions and showing interest we can accelerate this process of change. Age Related Cognitive Decline
C
ognitive decline has come to be expected as we age. The truth is that just because we gain years does not mean we need to lose our memory. With so many products on the market that boast of their brain boosting properties it would be nice to know what best supports brain health and integrity naturally. The following are a few things to keep in mind for longterm cognitive health.
Fighting Free-Radical Oxidation When the body goes through a process called cellular respiration to produce energy for the body (in the form of ATP), free radicals are produced. Free radicals are considered damaging to the body. Free radicals are neutralized naturally by the anti-oxidants found in healthful foods like fruits and vegetables. Diets that are low in anti-oxidant rich nutrients predispose the body to a toxic burden of these free radicals.
In addition to cellular respiration, outside sources of free radicals are among us continuously. Pesticides, exhaust and solvents in the environment are continuous sources of free radicals the body can be burdened with. Maintaining a diet full of antioxidant rich foods will help to reduce the burden of free radicals in the body. Antioxidant supplementation can be used when exposure to free-radical producing substances is high, like it can be in people who consistently work with chemicals.
Monitor Hormone Balance When it comes to appropriate hormone balance it is important the entire endocrine system is taken into consideration, including thyroid, adrenal and sex hormone levels. The endocrine system is so interrelated that when one piece begins to show dysfunction there is likely to be dysfunction elsewhere.
Thyroid Hypothyroidism (low thyroid) is associated with decreased blood flow to the grey matter of the brain, the part of the brain where memories and thoughts are processed. Monitoring thyroid levels routinely can catch hypothyroidism early and the disease can be treated through supplementation and medication.
Testosterone Blood vessel health depends on an appropriate amount of testosterone. Without testosterone, blood vessel tone can vary from too soft to too rigid, which creates a higher risk of stroke, hypertension or hemorrhage. Any change to the vascular integrity in the brain can lead to lack of oxygen and a corresponding reduction in function.
Estrogen Estrogen promotes positive moodsupporting neurotransmitter production, including serotonin and acetylcholine. Neurotransmitters are what the brain uses to talk to itself. Estrogen also increases blood flow and nourishment in the form of glucose (sugar) to the brain. When the brain is more nourished it is less likely to succumb to the damaging effects of oxidation from free radicals. Overall, estrogen acts like a protector of brain cells.
Hypertension High blood pressure, which affects one in four Americans, is a condition to monitor for and prevent. High blood pressure increases an individual’s risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney dysfunction. In addition to other comorbidities, elevated blood pressure can damage blood vessels that supply the brain with vital nutrition. When blood flow to the brain is impeded in any way, cellular damage can occur, leading to or exacerbating dementia-like disorders. 34

Homocysteine
High Blood Sugar
Protein-rich foods contain an amino acid called methionine, which is broken down into the amino acid homocysteine. From there, homocysteine is broken down into the amino acids glutathione and SAMe, both with health-promoting properties including mood elevation and liver detoxification. When the body lacks the cofactors needed to convert homocysteine into health benefiting glutathione and SAMe, homocysteine will build in the system and can create damage to blood vessels due to its oxidative properties. When oxidation reactions occur in the body, free radicals are formed and can degrade tissue. In homocysteine’s case, it’s blood vessels, specifically, that are degraded. Seem intimidating? It’s really just nutritional biochemistry 101! Damage to blood vessels can compromise the health of the vasculature of the brain, leading to decreased blood flow to the nervous system. When the nervous system cannot be nourished by appropriate blood flow, symptoms of dementia and memory loss can be exacerbated. Elevated homocysteine levels also have been shown to be associated with an increased risk of heart disease. What can be done to promote proper conversion of homocysteine? Ensure you are getting all of the cofactors through diet or supplementation. Specifically, vitamin B12, B6, B2, folic acid, magnesium, and zinc, all of which can be measured through blood work to prevent deficiency.
On the other end of the spectrum, consistently elevated blood sugar can have a damaging effect on brain health. Consistently elevated blood sugar can cause red blood cells to become stiff and sticky, making them more able to form a clot and increasing risk of stroke. Small blood vessels that nourish the various lobes of the brain are at a higher risk of damage when blood sugar is elevated. The best way to maintain a steady blood sugar is through lifestyle. Consistently eating sources of fiber and protein through the day and getting regular exercise will help to improve blood sugar levels and keep them consistent. With so many ways to improve cognition through natural means, it is worth investigating your risk and taking measures to start preventing cognitive decline now. Low Blood Sugar Balanced blood sugar improves energy, memory and mood. We all have experienced the effects of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) at some point. Lethargy, dizziness, inability to focus, and irritability are just a few of the symptoms of low blood sugar. Consistent low blood sugar can starve the brain of vital nutrition, leading to damage and death of brain cells.

Age Defying Foods to Savor Now
G
rowing older is a desirable biological process (consider the alternative!), and our senior years should be a wonderful time of life with minimum stress and lots of opportunities to enjoy the benefits of decades of hard work. However, aging can be accompanied by decay and dismay, as our bodies and minds begin to fail us. There is no gene that signals our bodies to degenerate, and it is believed the aging process is more a result of lifelong accumulation of molecular damage. Many age-related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis are linked to this molecular breakdown. The goal of anti-aging nutrition is to reduce this cellular injury, promoting and prolonging our health so that we look and feel good in our later years. Most advertisements about aging tout expensive creams and invasive surgeries to superficially counter the effects of getting older, but the real way to combat this decline is to work from the inside out. Conditions such as stress, chronic inflammation and poor diet result in poor skin integrity, which makes us look older faster. They also promote cognitive deterioration, and loss of bone and muscle strength. Many of these effects can be delayed by using what is readily available on the shelves in our kitchen!
Age Busters in the Pantry Berries: Antioxidant-rich foods are super age-busters, since they combat the results of stress and inflammation on our cells, and berries are a potent source of antioxidants. From familiar blueberries and raspberries to the more exotic acai, the sweet flavor and rich color of berries make them a cinch to add to any meal or snack. Fresh, frozen or dried, they retain many of their benefits. Culinary Herbs: Curcumin, also known as turmeric, is a yellow herb that is more than just a delicious component of Asian and Indian cuisine. It contains potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used medicinally in other cultures for centuries. Because curcumin inhibits a compound called NF- kappaB, which turns on inflammatory processes, it can defend against cellular damage. Evidence also exists that turmeric provides protection against Alzheimer’s. Ginger is another herb that combines delicious taste with therapeutic benefits. The root and oil of ginger contain anti-inflammatory cyclooxygenase (COX2) inhibitors that are similar to those found in medications such as Celebrex. Ginger and curcumin are also cancer protective, and support good skin integrity. Fatty fish: Forgo your fear of fat! Lipids provide the cushion that plumps the skin and diminishes wrinkles. Too little of this insulation leaves skin saggy and wilted. Fattier fish, such as salmon and sardines, provide omega-3s, which are an especially wonderful type of fat. Omega 3s, also known as essential fatty acids (EFAs), help reduce inflammation. These lipids also support healthy brain function, and protect against the cognitive decline that often occurs in later years. Since fish can contain age-promoting toxic elements such as 36
Natural Nutmeg September 2013
mercury and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), try to consume only wild-caught fish, and avoid the most toxic types such as swordfish and Chilean sea bass. Nuts and seeds: Want more foods to reduce wrinkles and sagging skin? Grab a handful of nuts or seeds. Not only are nuts and seeds nutrient dense and very satisfying, they provide the healthy fats that keep our skin radiant and supple. Nuts have also been shown to reduce coronary heart disease and control diabetes. An ounce or so of nuts, chopped and sprinkled over cereal, as a snack with dried berries, or as a crust for fatty fish makes an anti-aging wonder meal. Tea: Bursting with antioxidants, green tea is a dynamo of health and age resistance. Drinking one or two cups daily protects the heart and fights inflammation, while studies show it can protect DNA from age-related damage. Soothing hot and refreshing when iced, with lemon or raw honey or simply plain, getting into the green-tea habit is a smart move. Garlic: The powerfully enticing aroma and flavor of garlic come from compounds that also preserve youth. Garlic has strong antioxidant properties and research indicates that it can protect against cardiovascular disease, decrease blood thinning, fight cancer, and guard against diseases associated with cerebral aging such as arthritis and cataract formation. The benefits are evident from the outside as well since garlic can rejuvenate skin, and increase energy levels. Leafy greens: Follow Popeye’s lead and eat your spinach, or add kale, collards or Swiss chard to your menu; these dark greens are chock-full of protective compounds with names like polyphenols, flavonoids and carotenoids, as well as important vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium, and folic acid. When eaten regularly, they slow down the aging process by protecting cells from molecular insults. Eat them raw in salads, sautéed or grilled, pulsed in a smoothie or even as a tasty chip to get a daily dose of ageprevention. Remaining physically and mentally vibrant well into our 80s and 90s is possible. No matter what your current age, now is the time to stop cellular damage and the effects of aging with the delicious arsenal of weapons available in your kitchen.
