PUBLISHER'SLETTER

A

s I write this publisher letter, it’s still the beginning of August – hot and humid! But I know that September is just around the corner and for most of us it’s back to school, back to work and back to our usual routines. It’s a great opportunity to take some quiet time and really examine what we’ve accomplished this year…and what might still be holding us back. That little voice in our head that keeps telling us we’re not good enough – those are your limiting beliefs. How do you know if you are being controlled by limiting beliefs? Ask yourself the following questions: 1. Do you get stuck on the dot and find reasons why you can’t move forward? 2. When you have the opportunity to meet someone or talk to someone who could be very influential in helping you achieve a dream, do you make excuses as to why you can’t call them or meet them? 3. When you think about accomplishing your big goal or dream, do you feel an inordinate amount of fear and does the voice tell you it’ll never happen? 4. When you do accomplish a goal, do you find yourself unable to accept praise from yourself or others and do you tell yourself it was no big deal? If you’ve answered yes to any of these, here are some strategies to help you manage your limiting beliefs. 1. Write down 5 positive affirmations about yourself, your talents, and what you can offer to the world. Post these somewhere you can see them regularly and verbally say them aloud every day. 2. Challenge yourself and do the thing you fear the most. Every time you do something that scares you and you get a positive response, it’s a huge victory for your self-confidence. 3. Anytime you feel fear or you feel stuck, it’s an opportunity for you to check in with yourself and find out why. 4. Focus on your dreams. Make a list of all of the things you want to manifest. Don’t worry about how it’s going to happen or if you think it’s unrealistic. I find that focusing on what I really want allows me to be fearless in taking the steps I need to take to manifest these things.

BWC’s Dana McLaughlin has been Awarded the Registered Life Planner® Designation

T

he Kinder Institute of Life Planning has announced that Dana McLaughlin, Senior Wealth Advisor with Beirne Wealth Consulting Services, LLC (“BWC”), has earned the exclusive Registered Life Planner (“RLP®”) designation. Earning this dedication requires a strong commitment to the financial planning profession, completion of a five-day residential training program, and a six-month practicum involving peer review with mentor coaching and supervision. George Kinder is the founder of the Life Planning movement, a visionary concept that seeks to find ways to help people discover and understand their core life values. Values – not just dollars – must be the true focus of financial planning. From the Kinder website, Life Planning is “Financial Advising That Changes Lives”. Financial advisors are uniquely placed to help people fulfill their most deeply held goals, because they alone know how to put the financial elements in place to make dreams happen. Dana agrees wholeheartedly with this concept. She believes, “If you can be open to greater possibilities and are willing to realign your focus with an ignited personal vision, then the highest level of fulfillment can be well within reach.” Unlike a traditional financial advisor, Dana focuses on helping clients achieve a sense of financial wellbeing by helping them articulate their visionary life goals and connect those goals with their financial life regularly. Her creative and truly holistic approach involves assessing all aspects of a client’s financial life - including the visionary component. She works with executives, business owners, retirees, professional women and other high net-worth individuals all over the country. At BWC, Dana applies the financial life planning skills and methodologies taught by the Kinder Institute to the firm’s practice of financial planning. Areas of expertise include financial life planning, investments, financial organization, customized financial planning with leading software technology, retirement planning, advanced cash-flow planning, life insurance, long-term care, trust asset management, and estate planning strategies. Dana McLaughlin graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in Finance & Insurance with Summa Cum Laude honors. In 2005, Dana started her advisory practice with the investment firm A.G. Edwards in Wilton, CT known today as Wells Fargo Advisors. In 2013, she moved her practice to join with BWC, now based in Fairfield County. In addition to the RLP®, Dana has also received the Certified Financial Planner® certification in 2012, recognized as the standard for excellence for personal financial planning, as well as the Certified 401(K) Professional® and Accredited Asset Management Specialist® designations. Highlights from the 1st annual West Hartford Wine & Food Festival

R

esidents of Connecticut and beyond enjoyed some of the state’s best food and drink at the First Annual West Hartford Wine & Food Festival on Saturday, June 17th at Kingswood Oxford School. Attendees were treated to more than 30 wine tables featuring 250+ wines from local, national & world-renowned brands, food from 30+ top area restaurants, and live entertainment, that helped raise funds for select Independent Schools in West Hartford. It truly was a fantastic event and if you weren't there...you definitely missed a great one. Eat IN Connecticut, who helped out with the festival planning and was tasked with promoting the festival and working with the restaurants, did an outstanding job. Presented by Maximum Beverage and JUSTIN Winery, the festival featured wines from the likes of Justin Vineyards, Landmark Vineyards, Stonestreet, La Crema, Windracer Wines, Stag’s Leap Wineries, Bonterra, 1000 Stories, B.R. Cohn, Wente, Murrieta’s Well, Magic Door, 90+ Cellars, J. Lohr, Ferrari Carrano, Caymus Vineyards, The Prisoner Wine Company, Meiomi, Cooper and Thief Cellarmasters, Rombauer Vineyards, William Hill Estates, Chalk Hill Estate, and more. Participating restaurants included Millwright’s Restaurant, Grants Restaurant, INDIA Restaurant, Zohara Mediterranean Kitchen, Artisan Restaurant Tavern & Garden, Park and Oak Restaurant, The North House, ON20, Local’s 8, Noble & Co., Firebox, 4 Eat & Drink, Blind Pig, @ The Barn, Butchers & Bakers, Cafe Louise, Carbone’s Kitchen, Cavey’s, Chango Rosa, Flemings, NoRa Cupcake, The Rockin Chicken, Ideal Tavern, Killiam & Bassete Farmstead, Popover Bistro & Bakery, The Rooster Company, Savoy Pizzeria, Sub Edge Farm, Seoul BBQ, SHU Restaurant, Student Prince, Table 570 Asian Fusion, and The Green Teahouse. Farm-to-table restaurants offered delicious bites like Popover (candied rhubarb and strawberry scone - gluten-free!), Butchers & Bakers (coal fired garlic bread), India (Dahi-Puri), Grants (chilled corn soup w/crab), Park & Oak (chilled lobster salad), Rooster (chicken liver pate with peach marmalade), Firebox (seared diver scallop), Zohara (grilled greek octopus), Artisan (chicken liver mousse with crudite), Millwrights (chocolate nougat cake) and Savoy (wood fired pizza). And the wine of course...was to die for! Some of my favorites: Villa Maria Bubbly Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine Delaporte Sancerre, 1000 Stories Zinfandel, Murrieta's Well “The Spur” and Wente Nth Degree. I loved having the opportunity to sample such a huge variety of wine from all over the world. When you got tired of wine, there was also craft beer and spirit sampling too - my favorite was Perc coffee liquor. Great music, fun crowd - all in all a fantastic day. Stay tuned for information on next year’s festival! Submitted by Dr. Diane Hayden. https://www.westhartfordwineandfood.com

Invite Robin Clare to Speak to Your Audience!

A

s a young adult, Robin heard her first spiritual message, “Gather the family and come to New York City.” She instructed her family to meet at her Grandmother’s hospital room and her Grandmother peacefully passed away surrounded by family. From that moment forward, Robin began her extensive spiritual studies. Eventually, she left her career as a corporate MBA to live her divine purpose. Initially, she began as a spiritual promoter and then co-founded three spiritual centers. Ultimately, she received divine gifts that have enabled her to become spiritual messenger, teacher and author. Robin learned to share messages from all levels of Divine Beings including the Ascended Masters. To stand in the power of her gifts, Robin had to heal the traumas of her past, travel to India, study with experts and live a grounded, healthy way of being. Divine connection is available to each one of us. To have this in your own life, requires a deep faith that your connection is real combined with a commitment to examining and healing your life. When you are divinely connected, magical moments of inspiration and support become your everyday moments, enabling you to joyfully serve others. Robin is a wonderful story teller because she has so many divinely magical stories to tell! She would be delighted to share her signature talk, Divinely Guided Living with your audience. Back to Motion Sports Rehab and Fitness Get You Back into Motion

O

n November 26th, 2016, Back to Motion Sports Rehab and Fitness made their debut in Newington for their grand opening. Owners Dr. Alexa Veeder and Dr. Bradley Visconti are chiropractic physicians who graduated from New York Chiropractic College in 2016. Together they had a vision of bringing an integrated approach on manual medicines to provide optimal treatment for patients. Offering chiropractic, rehabilitation, massage therapy, fitness and personal training classes at one place makes Back to Motion a one stop shop for all of your musculoskeletal needs and personal goals. With all of the misconceptions on health and fitness, individuals find it difficult to know what to do to get or stay healthy and more importantly, without getting injured. This is why the fitness and personal training classes are geared and created around each client’s personal goals and needs with an emphasis on safety. They are all in a circuit training format with the goals to improve speed, balance and coordination. These are the main components explained by the chiropractic physicians for improvement of motor skills in sports such as track and field, soccer, gymnastics and more. Dr. Veeder is also a marathon coach and both are certified personal trainers. s we age, we are at increased risk for low bone mass (formerly called osteopenia) and osteoporosis, which makes us more susceptible to fractures, decreased mobility, pain, and even death, after complications of having a hip fracture. So what can we do to keep our bones strong and healthy? 1. Eat a high alkaline, anti-inflammatory diet. This generally means a largely plantbased diet with an emphasis on whole fruits and vegetables, raw foods, green juices, beans, and nuts, and avoidance of high-sodium foods, processed grains,

too much meat and animal protein, and added sugar. 2. Avoid gluten. Gluten is a strong trigger for leaky gut and inflammation which can lead to increased bone loss. 3. Support healthy gut bacteria and gut function by eating prebiotic and probiotic foods, as well as bone broth. Supporting gut health allows the best digestion of food and absorption of nutrients needed for bone health such as calcium, magnesium, Vitamin D and Vitamin K. 4. Limit the prolonged use of medications which decrease stomach acid such as proton-pump inhibitors, which can lead to decreased absorption of calcium. 5. Check your Vitamin D level. A level below 30 ng/dL is considered to be a deficiency. Sun exposure is the best form of Vitamin D supplementation. Taking a Vitamin D supplement if you must limit your sun exposure may be recommended. Many functional medicine experts state that a level between 60 and 80 ng/ dL is recommended. 6. Optimize Vitamin K2 intake (100 mcg/ day) through supplementation or through diet (animal foods and fermented plant foods). Vitamin K2 directs calcium to bones and teeth, and keeps it away from the kidney and blood vessels. 7. Calcium (1000-1200 mg/day) is best obtained through food rather than supplementation. Got Seasonal Allergies? Avoid These Foods

A

s a nutritionist ordering food sensitivity tests, I was surprised to see a pattern of foods flagged to avoid in people with fall allergies. The most common pollen allergy in the fall season is ragweed, a seemingly harmless yellow flowered weed that often grows on the side of the road. Allergy symptoms like sneezing, coughing, runny nose, and itching are the body's immune reaction to pollen, which it tries to expel like any germ. Because of your reaction to pollen, if you have fall allergies to ragweed, you may be set up for a unique immune response to certain foods.

8. Magnesium (400 -800 mg/day) is also critically important for bone health as it aids in the conversion of Vitamin D to its active form and allows adequate absorption of calcium. Best food sources: nuts, seeds, legumes, green leafy vegetables like kale and collards, whole grains and avocados. The most easily absorbed forms of magnesium are magnesium glycinate, taurate, malate, threonate, and citrate. 9. Engage in weight-bearing exercise such as tai-chi, yoga, brisk walking, dancing, hiking, and strength-training. 10. Practice relaxation and meditation to reduce stress and excessive production and release of cortisol which over time leads to excessive bone breakdown. This is a great start of many things to consider when aspiring to maintain good bone strength and health! 1. Bananas 2. Melons including cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon 3. Vegetables in the Cucurbitaceae family, zucchini, and cucumber Unfortunately, taking an antihistamine will not fix the digestive issues like it helps the runny nose. The reaction to foods is different, so the best approach may be to avoid these foods. Have Your Home or Office Green Cleaned

Consider a Career in Massage Therapy

W

hether you clean your home yourself, or if you have a cleaning service, it's so important to be aware of the cleaners you or your cleaning company use. YES, there is a HUGE difference between cleaning with green cleaning products vs. cleaning with conventional household cleaners. Here are 5 benefits to having your home or office green cleaned. 1. Improved indoor air quality. You spend about 90% of your time indoors either at home or at the office. Your windows are mostly closed during the cold months and the super hot months. This means you breathe the same recycled air, over and over again. The American Lung Association states that, poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, and can also trigger asthma, and even lung cancer. Conventional cleaners can cause dizziness, headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea and fatigue. 2. Less sick days. I know most of you can relate to the “back to school cooties” that the kids bring back home at the start of the school year. How about that coworker who keeps hacking all over the office, or the dreaded cold and flu season. Aside from proper hand washing you can totally keep germs at bay in your home or office by simply disinfecting doorknobs, keyboards, and phones. 3. Cost effective. In addition to offering less toxin exposure, the cost of green cleaners has become so much more competitive, making it more affordable for consumers. 4. Green cleaning products really work. We have customers who suffer from cancer, severe allergies, and asthma to name a few. Our products are infused with different organic essential oils to give them not only an incredible smell and aromatherapy, but they also work. Our Antibacterial is infused with Tea Tree & Lemon essential oils to give germs a one, two punch. Our All Purpose is infused with spearmint essential oil and is a natural degreaser. Our glass cleaner is infused with peppermint essential oil and is a natural bug deterrent. 5. Better for the environment. Let's face it, we can't get away from most environmental toxins; however, with taking small steps to choose natural cleaners over conventional you will help reduce pollution in our air and in our water ways. It doesn't mean you have to throw out your entire collection of conventional cleaning supplies under your sink. If you could replace one of your conventional cleaners to a natural cleaner, you've not only made a huge step in making your personal environment better, but everyone else's too. H

ave you considered a career in Massage Therapy? There has never been a better time to enter the field. Here are five great reasons to pursue massage therapy education:

1. The US Department of Labor is currently predicting a 22% growth in massage therapy employment opportunities between now and 2020. People need the stress management and wellness prevention that massage therapy supports. People are more informed about the benefits of massage than ever before and they are seeking well educated, skillful therapists. 2. Doing the work of massage therapy brings benefit not only to the receiver, but to the therapist as well. For both, the body's stress is reduced and the calming and connecting hormone, oxytocin, is increased. According to national surveys, massage therapists express a high level of job satisfaction. 3. Being a massage therapist brings with it great potential for socio-cultural well-being. Each session is an opportunity to invite that client into a state of relaxation and letting go, of centered calm and clients usually go back out into the world a bit kinder and gentler. 4. Attending massage therapy school is an opportunity to learn in community. Each individual student brings their own life experiences into the classroom and so enrich the curriculum. Professional development is a critical aspect of the education to be a therapist; learning about healthy communication, respectful boundaries, and empathy in the therapeutic relationship. Many factors influence how we think about these life skills and so diversity in the classroom provides a dynamic learning environment. 5. Massage school stretches students at all levels of body, mind and heart. The physical discipline is much like a moving meditation that aligns, strengthens and lengthens the body. The mind is stretched to open to new ways of thinking about health and wellness. The heart is softened to accepting each person as a unique individual, needing our compassion and deserving loving kindness conveyed through skillful touch. Delectable and Authentic Farm to Table Dinners at [oink] and Koan Farms “It takes the love and care from the farmer to inspire the chef and allow him to create incredible food.” Craig Hutchinson

O

n a gorgeous late June day, we traveled to Woodbridge, CT for a 5-course, farm-to-table dinner at Koan Farm. When we learned that we would be picking our own veggies and the chef would be preparing them right then and there, we knew we were in for an unforgettable experience. An intimate group of 12 of us sat at a long picnic table under beautiful trees within feet of the farm and dined on amazingly delicious fresh fare. And when the cooking was done, Chef Craig Hutchinson of [oink] and Farmer Ethan Schneider of Koan Farms sat at the table with us to discuss what it really means to be sustainable and serve the freshest, organic food. Chef Craig, a Brown University graduate with no cooking background, found passion in kitchens while learning under some of the best chefs in Boston. It was at Ribelle in Brookline, MA where he was shown a different perspective on food. Chef Maslow taught him that there are no boundaries when it comes to creativity, which earned the Ribelle team 4 out of 4 stars from the Boston Globe and also earned the team national recognition for being one of the top new restaurants in the country. Craig learned that to be at the top of the culinary pyramid, you must set out to be different and innovative. Now in Bethany, CT, his new popup concept, [oink] has been welcomed with open arms and Craig also works as a Chef at Ordinary in New Haven.

The mission of [oink]? Well, it’s a concept that is driven to provide the most sustainable and flavorful ingredients to the Connecticut food scene. Craig’s passion, which clearly came through in his cooking and conversation, is to create a more conscious restaurant scene. More conscious about what coined phrases such as "farm to table", "sustainability", or "fresh and organic" actually mean and the effort it takes to be 100% honest in how you market your restaurant. This is a concept that has been a long time coming! Koan Farms was started in 2015 with the mission to produce and distribute vegetables that improve the health of the soil, the health of the individual and help our community to become an ecosystem. They currently produce on three-quarters of an acre of land and would certainly be classified as a "micro-farm," yet grew about 5,000 pounds of food in the 2016 season. Ethan Schneider has been involved with local agricultural production since 2011. He has worked on a variety of different farms from California to Pennsylvania. His passion for hard work and getting dirty are the driving force behind his love for farming. Probably the best part of the night (with exception to the food of course) for me was sitting around the table with Craig and Ethan talking about sustainability, organic farming, and the state of the food industry today. It was eye-opening. What I took away from this night was that the small organic farmers in CT need our help. We should be buying all of our produce from these guys - not big chain grocery stores. Because if we don't, they're not going to be around for long. As far as I'm concerned these are the only people you can trust with growing your food...unless you're growing it yourself.

But I know you want to hear about the food – so feast your eyes on this! First, we picked fresh broccoli and cabbage and Craig grilled both up and seasoned with sesame oil, lavender and honey. We also got to pick our own scallions, pea shoots and flowers, and wood sorrel. Our next dish was beets and their greens with rye bread crumbs, cayenne and squash blossom. The beverage pairings were spot on as we enjoyed a sparkling sake which cooled the heat from this dish. Next came raw snap pea broth with edible flowers, greens and cocoa nibs – the hint of chocolate was perfect.

certified organic compost He then plated grilled Walden Hill pork cheek with the broccoli we picked and mustard flowers, garlic scapes and scallions. I have to say – I’m not a huge beef or pork cheek fan – I don’t really love the amount of fat and richness – but his were crispy from the grill and just delicious. And the sparkling Rose beverage pairing was a perfect complement. Next up was the wood sorrel weeds over fried egg (just laid from Ethan’s chickens that were walking through the farm and right by our table!). Anything with an egg is a fantastic dish as far as I’m concerned. Last, we were served whole wheat cake made from spelt flour and buckwheat with lavender honey and currant syrup drizzled on top. Everything was unbelievably delicious. But considering almost all of the ingredients were picked that day – how could it not be! I highly encourage checking out these dinners, not only for the amazing meal you will have, but for the learning experience and most importantly to support these guys who are truly passionate about what they do. http://www.oinkrestaurant.com/events/ and www.koanfarms. com. https://www.facebook.com/oinkrestaurant/ and instagram (@oinkchef).

A Food Lover’s Dream in Trastevere By Diane Hayden, PhD

T

rastevere…one of my most favorite places in Rome...from romantic winding alleyways and cobblestone streets to magestic churches and splendid piazzas, there are wonders to look at with every turn. By night it’s a happening destination full of young, hip, artsy crowds and by day it is a small village with timeless, artisan shops to browse. It truly is the quintessential Roman neighborhood. One of the best things we did while staying in this lovely area was take the Trastevere For Foodies tour. Our fantastic guide, Kate, had a plethora of knowledge about the area and the food we sampled was to die for. With a total of 9 stops over about 4 hours, my advice is don’t eat for a week before you do this tour! Stop #1: Pasticceria Trastevere. Signora Vera has been running this bakery since the 1970s – open every day because you never know when you’ll need to bring sweets to your friend or family’s house. We tried the bigne, choux pastry bun filled with zabaglione cream. Light and flaky and not overly sweet – which was good because it was 10 in the morning! Stop #2: Antica Caciara. This lovely market has been open since 1900 serving cured meats, salami and cheeses. There were also pastas in every shape and size available. We tried the Pecorino Romano that had been aged for 2 years – delicious. Stop #3: I Suppli. A Roman style rice ball fried to golden perfection. This is not your typical Arancini – and don’t let them hear you call it that! The Suppli is a favorite street food snack loved by Italians. Stop #4: Antica Norcineria. Ask any local where to find the best porchetta and they’ll point you to Piero’s place. This may have been the best thing I ate on the entire trip – not just this food tour. It was unbelievable – the pork loin was roasted for 5 hours with rosemary and fennel and sliced right in front of us. I could have eaten a whole sandwich! Stop #5: San Cosimato Market. A bustling little market open 7am-2pm every day but Sunday and all family run stalls offering seasonal veggies and fruit, meats, and cheeses. Stop #6: Fatamorgana. Here you’ll experience “true” Gelato – not the fake stuff you see at so many gelaterias across Italy. This was a fantastic learning experience as we realized we had already been duped in Venice and Siena with “fake” Gelato. Our guide informed us that real gelato should be the actual color of the flavor – for example, pistachio should actually be a light brownish/green – not fluorescent green. Any time you see neon colors with swirls and tons of fruit or puffed up gelato, you can bet it’s not real. There are artificial colors and additives added in to make it look that way. We tried the almond apple and cinnamon and the blueberry cheesecake – amazing!

16

Natural Nutmeg - September 2017

Stop #7: Enoteca Ferrara. Run by two sisters – a chef and sommelier duo – the pasta specialties include tonarelli cacio e pepe, spinach and ricotta ravioli and pesto con trofie. They also have over 1200 wines available. Yes – we sat down to a long lunch of all 3 pasta dishes – family style with wine being continuously poured! Stop #8: Innocenti. What does a typical Roman do after a 3- course lunch? Follow it up with a sweet treat – and here we tasted the mouth-watering biscotti made with no animal fats in the baking. Stop #9: Spirito Di Vino. Because we didn’t get enough sweetness at Innocenti (kidding), we finished up here with crème brulee and Vino licoroso – a sweet dessert wine. This place was amazing and had an underground wine cellar that we toured. The walls dated back to 80 BC!

It sounds like a lot – but after walking for 4 hours all over the city – I’m sure we burned enough calories. The bites were small – just a taste – and everything was exceptionally delicious. The Webster Technique for a Healthy Pregnancy By Joyce Chung-Quiros, DC

F

or many women, pregnancy can be a very uncomfortable experience. Early on, it may begin with morning sickness, mood swings, and food cravings. This can guide a newly pregnant mom on an emotional roller coaster. Then the physical changes begin to kick in. As the baby begins the journey of gestation, the baby gradually develops and grows in the mother’s womb. As the baby grows, it is inevitable that the mother’s belly grows and these changes alter spinal and pelvic alignment. Chiropractors use many techniques to assist with misalignments or “subluxations” in the spinal column, disc, bones, and joints. These can range from manual adjustments to soft tissue techniques that help realign areas of concern. Adjustments are light force manual techniques that a Chiropractor can perform by hand or using small instruments depending on each individual’s needs. The adjustments work to correct and relieve imbalances in the body to restore proper and optimal function. There are numerous Chiropractic techniques that can be utilized to effectively help a person with spinal alignment issues. Chiropractic care can safely benefit all ages and has particularly gained more popularity in recent years for expectant mothers. Pregnant mothers and their growing babies inside go through an intricate and unique developmental process that may pose physical challenges in their nine-month journey. A pregnant mother has to adapt to hormonal changes, weight gain, and postural changes throughout her pregnancy. Often, the pregnant mother is unable to adapt to these increased changes as quickly as she is used to, and may develop pain and discomfort in the lower back and pelvic region. Obstetric research shows that proper pelvic positioning, allows for a more comfortable and safer birth outcome for women. Pelvic balance is extremely important for a pregnant mom because the pelvis surrounds and protects the uterus and growing baby. The pelvis and its surrounding tissue and muscles often get tight, strained, and thrown out of balance because of the physical changes mother and baby experience throughout pregnancy. The Webster technique was developed by Dr. Larry Webster and is a safe and effective adjustment therapy to restore pelvic balance and function as well as relieve stress and tension in the muscles and joints. This technique examines the pelvis and sacrum and can determine alignment issues and imbalances in these areas. The Webster technique analyzes the sacral iliac joint and can

18

Natural Nutmeg - September 2017

be assessed on all weight bearing individuals. It involves a specific assessment process that includes having the mother bend her knee to try to touch the heel of her foot to her buttocks. The side where the knee is unable to bend as much or is ‘restricted’ in movement is the restricted side and therefore treated to restore balance. Dr. Webster discovered that this technique was found to be particularly effective on pregnant women. Not only did it help pregnant mothers restore normal physiological function, it significantly improved their comfort throughout pregnancy and facilitated an easier birth. The optimal position for a baby during the birthing process is head down and facing towards the mothers’ back which is called ‘vertex’. The fetus can often experience what is called intrauterine constraint throughout a mothers’ pregnancy. Intrauterine constraint is defined as any external force or pressure put on the growing fetus that obstructs the normal movement of the fetus. This can often occur in pregnant mothers because chemical and physical changes occur at such a faster rate during pregnancy and the mother is unable to adapt or keep up with the demands her body experiences. This means that intrauterine constraint can prevent a baby from achieving the optimal head down vertex positioning needed for a vaginal birth, therefore necessitating a cesarean delivery. Dr. Webster also discovered that those pregnant women who presented with a breech baby or a baby that was in malposition benefited significantly with this technique. The Webster Technique appeared to normalize the mother’s pelvic alignment as well as facilitate optimal fetus positioning with just a few treatments. This is particularly beneficial to mothers as obstetric research states that correct positioning of the baby in-utero affects birth outcome and decreases the potential for undue stress to the baby's developing spine and nerve system. Obstetric literature has also determined the importance of the pelvic alignment for the prevention of dystocia (difficult birth). It is important to recognize that the Webster Technique is a safe and effective Chiropractic treatment that assesses the pelvis, sacrum and abdominal muscles to optimize balance in the body and prevent pain and discomfort throughout pregnancy. This, in turn, will improve a mother’s chance for a more comfortable labor and decrease the use of interventions during delivery.

Nurturing Your Nature: The Benefits of Playing Outdoors By Meredith Sorensen

A

dults frequently say, “Go play outside,” to their children without fully realizing the benefits that can come from outdoor play and getting dirty. Digging into dirt can have significant physical health benefits. Exposure to a range of bacteria is essential to human health and building up immunity, especially in children. Luckily there’s a fast-track solution for anyone seeking to get out of hyper-sanitized environments: soil! A single teaspoon of rich garden soil contains more than 1 billion bacteria. Let them dig. They might get messy and dirty, and the bathwater at the end of the day might turn brown; but their little bodies will be that much more dynamic with exposure to microbes. Practicing mindfulness can spur mental benefits akin to practicing meditation. An easy place to take a moment and notice your surroundings with fresh eyes lies out your front door. The natural world – from varying weather patterns, to different seasons, to insects and small creatures – offers an endless canvas of opportunities to observe. In turn, the act of putting your full attention towards something, or being mindful, is linked to reducing anxiety and improving cognition. Here are some concrete ideas for encouraging more outdoor play. I’ve listed them in a crescendo of age-appropriate activities based on experiences with my two-year-old and the older neighborhood children. Some can be done in a moment; others will play out over time. • LOOK: Pick up a big rock and look underneath for bugs. Watch as they curl up in fright, and then slowly relax as they feel safe. Marvel at their antennae and imagine the information they are receiving. Touch the slimy snails, hold the wriggling worms, and let the last ladybug of the season climb to the tip of your finger, and fly. Wonder at their worlds. • SPLASH: Don your rain boots and stomp in rain puddles. Bend down and watch closely as the raindrops hit the surface of the water. Look up and feel each drop hit your skin.

20

Natural Nutmeg - September 2017

• COUNT: Be still and count how many insects and animals you see. • PLAY: Romp. Roll. Tumble. Try a cartwheel. Use your body to move, hop over rocks. • DIG: Dig holes. As a bonus, plant some bulbs. The fall is the unsung gardening hero season to put little goodies in the ground that will delight come spring. • CREATE ART: As a corollary to planting bulbs, make a map of your property and mark and color in where you’ve planted the bulbs with the appropriate colors. Come spring, watch as these bulbs come up and compare with the map. Talk about the temperature of the soil, and how these flowers are like thermometers for the soil “popping” up as the earth warms up. Remember to put a “north” arrow on your map. • EXPERIMENT: Put a ½”-layer of compost on half of your lawn (or mark out a section of it with some string). Rake it out and add water, letting the compost settle into the soil. After a few weeks, compare the grass in areas with compost with nonamended grass. How does the ground feel (harder or softer)? How does the color compare (darker or lighter green)? What other differences do you notice? • ADD COMPOST: If you don’t want to subject your lawn to a science experiment (see “EXPERIMENT” above) and would prefer to add compost to the whole area, go for it. Take this as an opportunity to do a real-world math problem with your child that involves measuring, converting inches to feet, calculating the total volume, and then dividing by 27 to figure out how many cubic yards are needed (there are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard, and bulk compost is sold by the cubic yard). If you need guidance on these calculations, head over to http://www.harvestpower.com/how-much-soil-mulch-needed/

• SPREAD MULCH: Mulch is like a magic carpet. It looks great right away. Over the long term, it helps suppress weeds, keeps temperatures steady, and slowly releases nutrients into the soil as the mulch breaks down. Plus shoveling and spreading mulch is a great workout; shoveling mulch burns between 300-430 calories per hour depending on the pace. Note: for best results, remove weeds beforehand, then add a 1”-2” layer of mulch. Come spring you’ll just need a touchup layer. • UNPLUG: Let outdoor work and play be a “phone free” time. If you can, leave your phone inside and let that space be spent truly paying attention to nature, your kids, and your local environment. Those text messages and emails and social media posts can wait an hour. Bonus: During your time away from it, notice how frequently your hand involuntarily reaches for your device. Connecticut residents have an additional unseen benefit when romping and rolling on public grassy areas: almost 20 years ago Connecticut’s legislature passed a law (P.A. 09-56) banning lawn care pesticide applica-

tions on the grounds of day care centers, elementary and middle schools. In addition, many homeowners are trending towards natural lawn care practices, such as overseeding, aeration, adjusting mowing heights, and adding yearly topdressings of compost. It’s nice to feel safe and green on grass. Next time you say, “Go outside and play,” you can be more concrete about digging in and getting dirty. And you can be confident that their little bodies and brains are benefiting from outdoor play.

Natural Treatments for

Just What the Doctor Ordered By Adam Breiner, ND

R

ecent studies seem to indicate that ADHD is on the rise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that cases of ADHD are up 42 percent from the previous decade. Whether this rise is due to environmental factors, increased awareness, or over diagnosis, parents everywhere are wringing their hands. The lack of focus, impulsivity, and hyperactive behavior can have serious implications for kids' academic performance, not to mention the many adults who find that the same symptoms are hindering their own success. Yet putting your child on ADHD medication (or going on it yourself) is a serious step and one that many people are reluctant to take. The good news, asserts Dr. Adam Breiner, who practices family medicine at The NeuroEdge Brain Performance Center, a division of The Breiner Whole-Body Health Center, in Fairfield, CT, is that there are better, more natural ways to treat ADHD in children and adults. Natural Therapies for ADHD 1. Get tested for food sensitivities. Undiagnosed food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerances to certain foods such as wheat or dairy, may bring on inflammation and symptoms of ADHD. If you have been feeling scattered, anxious, or that your attention span has lessened, consider getting tested or try cutting out a suspected food for at least 30 days to see if your symptoms disappear.

causes cycles of sugar highs and crashes. Sugar makes you feel great temporarily, but after your body quickly processes it, you feel lethargic and drained, not to mention that sugar burdens your liver, pancreas, and brain. 4. Consider EEG neurofeedback. This is a painless, non-invasive therapy that uses an electroencephalogram (EEG) to read and measure the brain's electrical activity. During the session, special software prompts the brain to subconsciously eliminate abnormal brainwave patterns by rewarding the patient, for example, by providing audible feedback or making a movie brighter. It is frequently used by students, athletes, executives, and other professionals who want to improve their performances. In addition to successfully treating ADHD, EEG neurofeedback can help alleviate the symptoms of depression, anxiety, autism, PTSD, TBI, and other disorders. A recent study highlights the success of neurofeedback in treating ADHD, anxiety, and related disorders. Subjects underwent functional MRI scans and EEGs to measure their brain activity. The subjects were then assigned 30 minutes of either neurofeedback or a placebo activity. After the sessions, the group that received neurofeedback experienced increased beta and alpha waves; those responsible for alertness, concentration, and relaxation. They also experienced a decline in delta and theta waves, those associated with drowsiness and deep sleep. Dr. Breiner's six natural tips for treating ADHD in children or adults. 1. Use EEG neurofeedback to optimize your brain's performance. Neurofeedback is a safe, simple, and fun way to eliminate abnormal brainwave patterns and help kids and adults alike grow toward optimal health. Chris, a 14-year-old boy, was suffering from symptoms of ADD. He was really struggling to focus in school and was put on Ritalin. However, the side effects were too much for him to bear. Desperate to try something else, his mother brought him to our center. By training his brain based on the deficits we detected during his baseline assessment and using targeted nutraceuticals, he improved not only in his focus and concentration, but dramatically brought up his grades in school.

2. Make smarter dietary choices. Eat a balanced diet of proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats. Your body is designed to eat these foods and will perform at its best when you stick to these guidelines. Be sure to focus on the quality of your meat, vegetables, and dairy products. Buy free range and organic whenever possible.

2. Get enough good quality sleep. Growing children and adults alike need at least eight hours of sleep a night. Adequate rest allows the body and brain to repair and will help improve your focus. For optimal sleep, stop using electronics an hour before bedtime. Use orange or red lighting and avoid blue or white light, which shuts down melatonin production. Be sure to turn off your wi-fi at night and keep your cell phone in a separate room. Always sleep in total darkness, and use blackout curtains if necessary. If you're in an area prone to noise, use a sound spa to block out random disturbances. Finally, keep the temperature cooler at night, as this also promotes sound sleep. For further relaxation, try meditation or deep breathing exercises.

3. Avoid foods that increase ADHD symptoms. Steer clear of processed foods with artificial dyes, which have been linked to hyperactivity in children. Quit or reduce your intake of gluten and grains, and avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates such as bread, chips, and white rice (which, to your body, are treated the same as sugar). Sugar is particularly problematic, because it

3. Exercise and move often. We are not designed to sit still at a desk all day, so it's little wonder that children fidget in their desks and can't concentrate when forced to sit for hours at a time. Exercise and movement is a powerful anecdote for helping kids and adults gain clarity, focus, and a general sense of calm and well-being. Remember, for generations, humans have had to

climb, walk, run, and lift for their survival. We no longer have to move, but we desperately still need to! Try to get some form of exercise every day by going to the gym, jogging, or playing a sport. Just move and encourage your children to do the same (don't worry, they'll happily comply!). 4. Get a daily dose of "green." Getting out in nature may help improve symptoms of ADHD. A recent study reveals that children with ADHD experienced a reduction in their symptoms after spending time in green outdoor settings. Get plenty of family "outdoor time", the greener, the better! Let children do homework outside after school, go for scenic walks in parks or natural areas, and take every chance to enjoy the sunlight and fresh air.

EEG neurofeedback along with healthy daily habits will help you regain your focus, improve your performance, and at last live up to your full potential. A Naturopathic Approach to Pediatric Health

By Craig T. Fasullo, ND

s summer wanes and the days begin to shorten, thoughts turn from beach trips and family vacations to classrooms and textbooks. For children, it’s the beginning of another school year, with the associated mixed bag of emotions ranging from enthusiasm to dread. For parents, it’s renewed focus on keeping those kids healthy and doing the best possible to support their academic success. It is important to remember how closely overall health is related to doing well at school. Beyond just accumulating sick days, an unwell child will be more distracted, more fatigued, and less likely to be able to maintain through the rigors of the school day. Naturopathic treatment is perfectly suited to keep your child healthy throughout the academic year. The fundamental principle of naturopathic medicine is that the human body is inherently wise and has an innate capacity toward healing. Nowhere is this as clearly evident as with children. Anyone who has spent any amount of time around kids has clearly seen the vigor and vital force that brims to capacity in a healthy child. They often have more energy than they know what

to do with, and this outward display is mirrored within every cell of their bodies, each fully focused on growth and development. This being the case, children tend to respond remarkably well to supportive natural therapies that work in line with their own vitality. By supporting specific body systems and removing obstacles that may be thwarting that innate healing process, naturopathic medicine works gently and effectively to promote wellness within each child. Ear Infections Ear infections are the most common pediatric diagnosis within a clinical setting. They are far more frequent during fall and winter months, when bacteria and viruses are out in full force and natural immune resistance is lowered. They can sometimes be related to a recent upper respiratory infection, although this is not always the case. It’s important to remember that by far most ear infections are caused by viruses, similar to those that cause sore throats and stuffy noses. Just as antibiotics are ineffective against the common cold, they are rarely helpful in most cases of uncomplicated ear infection, a fact that comes right out of the medical journal Pediatrics. Not only are they ineffective, but repeated antibiotic use is incredibly disruptive to the vast array of beneficial bacteria that makes up a child’s developing gastrointestinal microbiome. This area of rapidly growing research strongly suggests that many of the chronic health conditions that affect adults, from heart disease to obesity, have strong links to a healthy microbiome, and after enough damage, recovery becomes limited. Fortunately, other effective treatments are available. In cases of acute ear infection, a combination treatment of herbal immune supportive agents and herbal ear drops is remarkably successful. It is always important to visit your physician to ensure that there are not additional complications and the eardrum is not ruptured prior to putting any liquid into the ear. It is important to differentiate between the rare or occasional ear infection as compared to chronic ear infections that occur again and again. These are the children who are too often given course after course of antibiotics, mostly for lack of any other treatment option, and eventually are resigned to ear tubes. For these kids, naturopathic medicine can really prove miraculous, as we look deeper into the underlying causes of these recurrent infec-

tions. In many cases, there is a link to food intolerance or allergy, and when the aggravating foods are identified and removed, in conjunction with supportive immune system therapy, the body goes back to its natural default – being healthy! The same advice goes for other recurrent immune issues of childhood, from strep throat to bronchitis. Hydrotherapy Hydrotherapy is a gentle yet powerful treatment that harnesses the power of hot and cold water to increase circulation and promote health. The warming sock treatment is a perfect at-home hydrotherapy treatment to use as soon as your child begins to come down with any viral illness. To do this treatment, take a warm bath or soak the feet in a hot footbath for a few minutes to warm them up. Soak one pair of cotton socks thoroughly with cold water, wring them out well and put them on the feet. Immediately cover them with a pair of dry wool socks, and immediately go to bed. If a child is reluctant to do this, assure them the wet socks will only be uncomfortable for a minute and that by morning the socks will be dry. Perform this treatment for three consecutive nights at first onset of symptoms. Increasing circulation to the feet stimulates the immune activity of the lymphatic system and has a reflexive drainage effect on the head and upper respiratory system. Focus & Attention Using a naturopathic lens, we can consider focus and attention difficulties (as well as behavioral issues) as symptoms of an irritated or disrupted nervous system. As adults, we have been trained and instructed regarding the appropriate cultural norms and interpersonal filters to use when engaging in various social situations. We might feel like disengaging or even acting out in a given circumstance, but in most cases we subdue that innate emotion in deference to the more appropriate social response. Children have not yet been ingrained in this way, so the rawer, more innate emotion often shines through. When this becomes a chronic pattern, it is a clue toward some deeper imbalance. Naturopathic doctors seek to identify the underlying cause of that imbalance, with the end goal of reducing nervous system irritation, resulting in a more emotionally balanced, cognitively clear child. We seek out potential dietary triggers, test neurotransmitter levels, and rule out nutritional deficiencies in order to assess the individual case of each unique child.

Don’t Underestimate the Basics The fundamentals of a healthy life are the same for children as they are for adults. The four essentials of health are what you eat, how you move, how you sleep, and how you deal with stress. As with any foundation, any significant or prolonged misalignment in any of these areas will cause disruption to the overall system. It is so very important that parents are strong role models in setting an example of life balance for their children. 1. Food: Keep your child healthy by making sure the whole family is eating lots of whole and unprocessed foods. The vitamins and minerals in whole foods build a strong immune system to fight infections. Aim for a plate full of foods with every color of the rainbow. Sneak in greens and other veggies wherever you can, whether it’s in soup, casserole or meatloaf. Remember that sugar does more than just make kids hyper. It directly inhibits the immune system, and should be avoided - especially during illness. 2. Play: Outdoor play and significant physical activity was once synonymous with childhood. With the ubiquitous presence of cellphones and tablets, and the increasing popularity of more sophisticated video games, this is something we can no longer take as a given. Habits and routines are easier to develop than they are to break, so start early in ensuring that your child gets adequate exercise and outdoor play. This helps build social interaction skills in addition to ensuring a healthy body.

necessary amount of rejuvenating healthful rest. 4. Stress: Our children are increasingly susceptible to the effects of mounting societal pressures, with the added factor of having fewer learned mechanisms with which to deal with them compared to adults. Bullying at school as well as online has become a major issue, and the innate desire of every child to “fit in” has been exploited and manipulated within the world of social media. The typical stressors of school, relationships, family matters and thoughts about the future are all valid stressors, but they are now amplified multifold and worldwide. This is mostly unchartered territory, but it’s clear that children are not able to create regulations and boundaries themselves, and they need the support and attention of parents and adults to help navigate this world. If your child seems overly stressed, it’s important to get involved, as emotions can all to quickly spiral out of control. By setting a good example, in addition to maintaining that delicate balance between keeping a watchful eye and allowing for individual experience and growth, we can ensure our children have the best possible opportunities available toward a healthy and joyful life. 3. Sleep: Lack of sleep is a common complaint among many people, and children are increasingly susceptible. Adequate sleep is vitally important to everyone, but especially children, who need that time to focus on their energy of growth of body and mind. Recommended sleep amounts vary by age as follows: Age 3-5: 11-13 hrs (including naps), Age 6-12: 10-12 hrs, Age 13-18: 9-10 hrs. Beginning as early as grade school, and too often by high school, many children are falling far short of these requirements. The demands and obligations of homework, sports, and other after school activities often run into the evening, and cellphones and tablets are too frequently present into the night. It is important to set rules and parameters around all these things to ensure that our children are getting the www.NaturalNutmeg.com

ducators and parents alike are taking notice of the stress that surrounds our children on a daily basis. The stressors and demands of modern American society leaves students at a disadvantage that can only be remedied by a significant change in the way we structure and approach teaching and learning. However, while well intentioned, the current nationally imposed reform efforts have led to increased levels of anxiety, frustration and stress amongst educators. Moreover, contending with students’ increasing levels of anxiety, depression and stress to succeed in a competitive world have led to unprecedented educator absenteeism and burnout. Not surprisingly, research studies have revealed that stressed teachers create stressed students. If we, as adults, are living and dying stressed out, how have we not caught on that students are also impacted by environmental stress? Perhaps, one might wonder if teenagers and children experience more stress than adults, since they are not ‘in control’ of situations as adults would be. Youngsters are also in the process of maturing, trying to find their place and exploring the world, which, of course adds another layer of underlying stress. Add to that the expectations of tests, homework, pressure to succeed or just to pass a class. Moreover, students are stressed to get a scholarship or make a team, cope with family hardships, health problems, parent’s fighting or breaking up, navigating their own feelings and relationships, not to mention trying to fit in or standing out. Therefore, how do we expect students to find success and exceed in academics if they are not being taught healthy coping mechanisms? Stuck in a society of stress, we forget what a danger constant stress can be to ourselves and our children. However, there are a few teachers here in Connecticut who are taking steps to change and reverse the cycle of stress for themselves and for their students. These teachers are making changes in their classrooms, so the next generation will not be forced to stay in the detrimental cycle of being stressed out and sick. Many Connecticut teachers and soon-to-be teachers are choosing to release tension by engaging in grounding strategies, meditation, mindfulness and yoga. These professionals are working to better their lives. Moreover, when integrating such strategies into their classrooms, educators are beginning to see their students transform out of the 26

stress culture into people who are focused on creating self-awareness and balance. Mindful Moments Alisa Wright, teacher of wellness at Regional School District 6 in Morris, Warren, and Goshen elementary schools, felt that she had personally reached the point in her life where she wanted her attitude and self-awareness to be more focused, so she could create the environment that helped her thrive. When Ms. Wright was a student herself pursuing an Integrative Health and Healing Masters of Art degree at The Graduate Institute, in Bethany Connecticut, she was encouraged to explore Mindful Moments, as she calls them. Mindfulness is the practice of being and staying aware of objects, nature and the people around you. Repetitive actions and schedules take us away from being keenly aware of our surroundings, while mindfulness tries to connect with the normal everyday moments. These were moments of reflection on uniqueness, tapping into potential, and opening up to the realm of possibility that surrounds us. As Ms. Wright reached the point where the practice of mindfulness was creating profound differences in her own life, she felt drawn to implement mindfulness techniques in her classroom, so her students could experience this ‘shift in feeling and thinking,’ too. She started promoting mindfulness through the use of a community garden at her school. Students get to engage with nature and learn patience and focus and reflection as they work and reflect in the garden. She has seen that when students are being taught how to make observations on a holistic level, this allows them to explore details overlooked in the past and they more fully understand the importance of becoming part of the garden experience. Students notice the beauty of nature and their relationship to it. Stress Diffusing Randy Colin teaches at Oxford High School in Oxford Connecticut, and is a current student enrolled in the Integrative Health and Healing Master of Art's Degree Program at The Graduate Institute. She stated that she was experiencing personal changes since she began to regularly practice the stress management techniques that she was introduced to by faculty. Randy has been implementing a lifestyle of striving for a ‘healthy balance’ in and out of the classroom.

Stress, in small doses, is good for our minds, since it spurs us into learning and adapting. However, ongoing stress over situations beyond our control can cause our minds and bodies to become unbalanced. Balanced living is achieved by knowing when and how to diffuse stress. Keeping this in mind, Ms. Colin asks herself to be aware of what is triggering her own stress and why a certain reaction or fear is being expressed while she is in a ‘stressful’ situation. Being able to identify the source of stress allows one to redirect their reaction to a healthier method of dealing with the stressors. Students are taking note of the changes in Ms. Colin and are beginning to respond to her redirection methods. She has started using stress diffusing in her classroom and she tries to remind students to consider the cause of the stress and they talk about it. If the stress is caused by something that isn’t so important, she helps them learn to release the stress. She is focusing her attention on calming their breathing and redirecting the frustration in a healthier manner. Calming Yoga Yes, you heard that right. There is a teacher here in Connecticut who is able to get your 5-16-year-old children to sit down and do yoga with her. It isn’t as hard as it sounds, and it helps them relax from their constant energy, focus on thinking and being mindful of their surroundings, and guides them to de-stress as they learn to release negative thoughts and energy.

Melissa Constantini, an educator with a Master of Arts Degree in Learning and Thinking from The Graduate Institute, has started meditation camps for students in Connecticut. During the camp, she guides students on utilizing focusing methods. Anybody can benefit from learning how to keep their mind relaxed and focused on the task at hand, but children especially struggle with focus, since they usually are more focused on outward exploration rather than calming their minds. Each day of the camp, the students practice seated meditation, then they all join in yoga before they begin the activities of the day. During creative time, she guides them in creating calming crafts, such as rain sticks or mandala circle journaling, to focus their minds on creativity. In doing this, students learn to use meditation to bring out passions, change and creating in the artistic areas.

Does It Make a Difference to the Students? Ms. Wright has begun to see what she is terming a restorative impact on the day for students who are practicing mindfulness. She has found that if her students are practicing mindfulness and reflection before she begins teaching them for the day, the classroom settles down with a focused energy. This is allowing students to have a deepened understanding of the interconnectedness of self, others, and the world. However, this change isn’t just happening in her classroom, the entire district has taken notice of the changes and many teachers have implemented her Mindful Moments. These teachers who have come on board with the idea are also finding similar results. Ms. Wright believes that helping students learn mindfulness and stress defusing techniques will have a “ripple effect of good” on the student’s lives. Another teacher, Kahseim Outlaw had presented to his school faculty on the benefits of mindfulness, meditation and yoga, and later was able to start up an after-school yoga class for the faculty and students at his school. With each class, Kahseim taught yoga concepts and techniques. The basics of yoga lie in connecting mind and body and brings with it the ability to look deeper into actions and thoughts to find one’s purpose and path. While these are foundations of yoga practice, understanding these concepts is what takes a 1-hour yoga class and causes its impact to spread throughout one’s week and life. In the beginning of the semester, the attendees were mostly faculty with a few scattered appearances by students. However, by week 5, there were more students attending than there were faculty members in the class. By the end of the 16-week semester, Kahseim was the only faculty present, all other attendees were students. Students were choosing to stay after-school to practice, discuss and explore meditation and yoga. Students saw that staying for yoga for an hour would have a better effect on their lives than other activities they could be engaged in. Even during finals week, students wanted to stay for yoga, because they were seeing the difference a weekly 1-hour yoga class was having on their mindset, choices and academics.

However, it is critical to maintain school attendance to the greatest extent possible. Absence from school or class reinforces anxiety rather than diminishing it. In an effort to positively alter discipline methods for students who have social anxiety, Ms. Bhatt's program creates a safe haven, a Zen den, with minimal stressors and natural lighting to help students focus on relaxing. This approach to handle students who are struggling gives them the chance to redirect and learn better methods of dealing with stress. The students are finding that they can focus on finding balance again and return to learning quickly, rather than focusing on their ‘misbehavior.’ Ms. Bhatt’s program has seen immediate results in changing student’s behaviors. In closing, it should be said that with so much chaos and stress surrounding us, it is great to know that the future generation is being taught better coping mechanisms for handling the hard moments in life. Maybe our children will be able to do more than cope, maybe they will be able to rise above stress and live in mindful awareness in every moment of their life. But to give them the chance to have a different lifestyle and to know a less stressful existence, educators and parents need to make a mindset change. Schools of today and tomorrow need to embrace a new culture of learning and thinking, whereby classrooms become mindscapes for engaging and drawing upon the inherent creative and intellectual capacities of all learners. It is now necessary to deconstruct the current educational framework and dialogue on reconstructing ones that better address the challenges of learning and thinking in the 21st century. According to Terri Bhatt, educator and founder of Zen-Den and Calm-tripeneur, students who are struggling with routines or the interactions in a classroom will benefit the most from mindfulness and releasing stress practices. Struggling students are often termed defiant, however, refusal is a frequent component of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. There is a growing cohort of high school students receiving mental health diagnoses, primarily anxiety and depression. When refusal coping techniques begin showing, teachers generally remove students from the class so that other students can continue to learn.

Simple, Easy, Every Day Meditation By Pat McGrath t the time meditation burst on the scene, I was in college trying to make sense of the 60’s. I didn’t understand what meditation was, but the Beatles were doing it and that got my attention. Beatles music brought joy back after the shock and sadness of the JFK assassination. Suddenly it was ok to have fun again. Meditation, however, was a harder sell.

A

Now, older and wiser, I was willing to try again. From my perspective it helped that Sarah McLean (founder of the McLean Meditation Institute) was from New England, didn’t wear any special clothes when she meditated, sat where it was comfortable, spoke English, and was a highly-functioning business owner not living as a hermit or a monk. The program set me straight. It was a modern approach. In her Simple, Easy, Every Day Meditation Method, Sarah reassured us that meditation is a natural process. Her “Five Essentials of Meditation” made meditation a game-changer for me: 1. It’s ok to have thoughts. 2. Don’t try too hard. 3. Let go of expectations. 4. Be kind to yourself. 5. Stick with it. As it turned out meditation was not what I thought it was. I learned I don’t have to be different than who I am. In fact, its just the opposite, when I meditate it feels like I’m coming home. Meditation is probably the most powerful tool we have to help us release every day stress. Specifically, the kind of stress which builds up and gets in the way of us actually enjoying our lives or prevents As seen in the New York Times and the Boston Globe

For most of us meditation seemed too foreign. The swamis, saris, beards, bare feet, sitar and the chanting in sanskrit were cultural references we didn’t understand. Personally, I was not ready to defend, define, or explain to my New York, Irish-Catholic family why I needed to leave the room, sit crossed-legged on the floor, and go silent. I was afraid meditation might turn me into a different person, make me “blissed out”, or overly reverent. I didn’t want to lose my edge, my sense of humor, or wit. Yet I was intrigued. A few years later, however, I signed up to learn Transcendental Meditation (TM). The class was nearby and I heard that it could help with stress. Since drugs and alcohol gave me a stomach ache, I decided to give meditation a try. That lasted about 6 months. After a while I was convinced I was doing it wrong and stopped. Fast forward about 40 years. A friend asked me to join her in a modern meditation program in Arizona.

us from knowing who we really are and what we really want. Meditation has re-connected me with that part of myself that has always been there but I had lost contact with. My soul. Now I meditate everyday because I want to. If I don’t, I feel the outside world pulling me away from what’s important. Meditation has become invaluable to me. There is still a lot of confusion and misunderstanding around the practice of meditation. If you have tried to meditate and, like me gave it up, I invite you to give it another shot. Take a class, attend a workshop or get private instruction. Meditation can help you be happier with you. It can help you focus, sleep better, build a strong bond with your intuition, recharge your batteries and give you a sense of renewal. hen we are outside enjoying the pleasant weather, we are more vulnerable to strains and sprains from gardening and outdoor activities. Injuries may be new or reactivated. This is also the time of year when allergies and asthma can be problematic. One wonderful solution to these and many other problems is the Bowen technique. Bowen technique was developed by the late Tom Bowen (1916-1982). After serving in World War II, he returned to his home in Australia filled with a desire to alleviate human suffering. During the day he worked as a chemist, while at night he began to study the effects of gentle hand movements on the human body. In the early fifties he left his day job to begin practicing his new therapy full time. My first encounter with Bowen was when I attended a conference in Australia in 1990. For years, I had been experiencing daily chronic pain sustained after several serious injuries. Up until that time, nothing could alleviate my discomfort. Since I had always made it my policy to experience first-hand any new therapy or treatment before introducing it into my practice, I signed up for a Bowen session at the conference. I left the conference pain free and remain so to this day. I knew, without any doubt whatsoever, that Bowen must be brought home to the United States and to my practice. The Bowen technique is a series of light, gentle, rolling connective tissue moves (touches), which stimulate nerve impulses to create soft tissue relaxation. However, it is not massage. Muscle tension and strains are relieved and normal lymphatic flow is restored without the need for deep pressure. There are frequent pauses between sets of moves to provide the brain and the whole body to integrate the adjustments occurring on a cellular level. Often, scar tissue softens and adhesions release with this very light work. The balancing of muscles, tendons, and ligaments help the

bones to realign themselves. Nearly everyone reports a pleasant, relaxed state and a deep sense of well-being and ease. It is not unusual for patients to fall asleep during treatments. Bowen therapy is completely safe and appropriate for newborns, pregnant women, the elderly, chronically ill, and trained athletes. Patients are asked to wear loose-fitting clothing when coming in for treatment. Expect to lie down first on your stomach and finish on your back. When necessary, treatments can be applied while sitting. The energetic component of Bowen assists the body in readjusting itself over the following 5 to 10 days after a single treatment. This makes it very convenient for individuals, giving them more time to carry out normal routines instead of coming in repeatedly within a week for physical therapy. Infants and toddlers can be treated even while roaming around the room. I have often treated toddlers who have fallen. One example is a child who fell on his head while jumping on his bed. When he came in to see me he’d already been experiencing seizures for six months. Every time he became agitated he would have a seizure. No medication had helped him. In reality, he had misaligned his neck in the fall even though X-rays had looked normal. After his first Bowen treatment, his seizures were less frequent, down to six times a week. After his next treatment, the seizures ceased. The gentle Bowen moves allowed his body to realign itself, returning it back into balance. Similarly, when an arm or leg is in a cast, treating the unaffected limb stimulates faster healing on the compromised side.

Internal psychological shifts are common yet not necessary to evoke an emotional response. This is often very helpful for people who have been sick for a period of time and are really worn out from being ill. An example is people suffering from chronic consequences of tick borne illnesses. By allowing the nervous system to reset and improve the lymphatic flow, the patient’s innate healing abilities are rejuvenated so they can return to a much healthier state. Since integrating the methodology of Tom Bowen into my practice in 1990, I have had the privilege of working with hundreds upon hundreds of patients who have benefited from his techniques. My observations assure me that my practice has been enhanced by its implementation and that the results speak for themselves. Dr. Kathleen Riley has been practicing in Connecticut for over 30 years. She received her Naturopathic degree from Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington and certification from The Bowen Therapy Academy Of Australia and is an Associate Bowen Instructor. She enjoys treating pediatrics through geriatrics for acute and chronic ailments, including tick born illnesses. For more information, visit http://kathleenrileynd.com or contact her 860-665-1254. Hypothyroidism: Natural Support for a Sluggish Thyroid, Part 2

By J. Erika Dworkin, Certified Lifestyle Educator The purpose of treating hypothyroidism is to maintain normal metabolism by correcting a deficient output of thyroid hormone. Once replacement therapy begins, the thyroid will stop producing hormones all together, and replacement must be continued for life. Many patients...have reported benefits from practicing a yoga pose called the Shoulder Stand...which increases circulation to the thyroid. ...Hold as long as comfortable, slowly working up to 5 minutes a day. Don’t do this pose if you are pregnant or menstruating...[or] if you have glaucoma, sinus problems or high blood pressure. The Shoulder Stand may be more effective if you...[visualize] the thyroid gland waking up from a long period of inactivity and producing more TH. - DrWeil.com, Hypothyroidism

id you know that five times more women than men suffer from thyroid diseases, and twenty percent (20%) of women over age 60 have subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH, without definite or readily observable symptoms)? Part 1 of this two-part article (July/August 2017 issue) discussed how the thyroid gland functions, the tests and symptoms that practitioners have available to diagnose hypothyroidism and SCH, and diet guidelines to support healthy thyroid function. Below is a discussion of the dietary supplements that can set you on the path to long-term thyroid wellness. The Conventional Approach Traditional endocrinologists most commonly treat hypothyroidism with synthetic thyroid hormone (TH) replacement therapy (T4 as levothyroxine, such as Synthroid® or Levoxyl®). They determine dosage based on TSH levels and symptoms, proceeding cautiously with cardiovascular patients (to give the heart time to adjust to an artificially increased metabolism). They may change dosage following a two-month evaluation.

Side effects of excess administration of thyroid medication include insomnia, shakiness, palpitations, and appetite changes. According to Alan R. Gaby, MD (Gaby), while TH is “generally well tolerated, it has the potential to cause significant side effects and should, therefore, be used with caution and respect.” Human and animal studies have demonstrated that T4 (thyroxine) replacement alone is not always the right solution. In 2010, one study compared the T3 and T4 levels of 56 hypothyroid patients treated with T4 alone with the levels found in 27 healthy control subjects. The researchers concluded that T4 supplementation alone resulted in a lower free T3-to-free T4 ratio in the hypothyroid subjects in comparison to the healthy subjects, and that future studies should seek improved clinical outcomes from treatments that would produce higher plasma concentrations of T3. In another 2001 study, researchers examined whether T4 treatment (100 mcg) was effective in 25 patients who had hypothyroid symptoms but tested within the normal reference range on thyroid function tests. They concluded that T4 was no more effective than placebo in improving cognitive function and psychological wellbeing in patients. Supportive Dietary Supplements While traditional practitioners generally oppose the use of dietary supplements to treat hypothyroidism, the supplements discussed below nevertheless have proven to support thyroid function. Ideally, any hypothyroid patient wishing to incorporate dietary supplements into her daily regimen, especially if she is taking prescribed medication, should first discuss her options with a knowledgeable holistic practitioner.

1. Vitamin A: Since vitamin A (NOT beta carotene, which a hypothyroid cannot efficiently convert to vitamin A) is critical to proper thyroid function, deficiency is associated with thyroid dysfunction. In one 2012 study of obese premenopausal women, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, the researchers concluded that, since vitamin A treatment significantly reduced TSH blood levels, vitamin A supplementation might reduce the risk of SCH. 2. Anti-Microbials/Virals: According to David Brady, ND, DC, CCN, a Fairfield, Connecticut practitioner, “stealth viruses” can cause Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid), the most common cause of SCH. He recommends treating such viruses with: (1) antimicrobials (berberine, caprylic acid, grapefruit seed extract, oil of oregano, and/or black walnut); (2) prebiotics (acacia fiber, inulin, and/or FOS); and (3) probiotics (anti-inflammatory; rotated diverse strains of viable live organisms). 3. Balanced B Complex Vitamins: The B vitamins that are most critical to thyroid function are: (1) Riboflavin/B2 (almonds, brewer’s yeast); (2) Niacin/B3; and (3) Pyrodoxine/B6 (bananas, brewer’s yeast) – deficiency prevents the thyroid’s efficient use of iodine. Also, hypothyroidism can prevent proper metabolism and use of ingested cobalamin/B12 (grass fed organic beef, organic eggs, haddock, sole) (best absorbed in the methyl and dibencozide supplement forms). B12 deficiency can cause pernicious anemia, mental illness, neurological disorders, and death. B vitamins should be taken in balance before higher doses of single Bs are added to a supplements regimen. 4. Iodine [cod, haddock, halibut, sea bass (2x/week), seafood, kelp/seaweed, cod liver oil, iodized salt]: The body requires iodine to make TH. The daily upper intake level (UL) of iodine for adults is 1100 mcg, but higher amounts are usually welltolerated. Intake exceeding 800 mcg/day can lead to SCH, and regular excessive intake of iodine can exacerbate Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and reduce thyroxine production and thyroid function. While supplemental iodine needs can vary widely among individuals, Stephen Langer, MD, recommends these daily amounts: (1) Babies 0-6 Months – 35 mcg; (2) Babies 6 months- 12 months – 45 mcg; (3) Children 1-6 years – 60 mcg; (4) Children 7-10 years – 80 mcg; (5) People Aged

7 and Older – 110 – 150 mcg; (5) Pregnant Women – 125 mcg (if even only moderately iodine deficient, pregnant women are at high risk of giving birth to infants with cognitive impairment and learning delay) ; and (6) Lactating Women – 150 mcg. 5. L-Tyrosine: The thyroid gland produces TH from iodine and this amino acid. Studies have shown that tyrosine can improve sleep, combat fatigue, enhance mood, and relieve anxiety, by playing a role in the production of melatonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. However, patients taking any prescription thyroid medication, and those with high blood pressure, should not take tyrosine (or at least without guidance from a knowledgeable practitioner). 6. Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids: Found abundantly in wild, cold-water fish, omega-3 fatty acids support thyroid func-

tion by combating inflammation and taking part in cell respiration and metabolism. 7. Selenium [Brazil nuts (6-8 or 1 oz = 544mcg), halibut, sardines): After iodine, selenium is the mineral most critical for proper thyroid function because it is a component of the enzymes that convert T4 to T3 and thus is necessary for the activation of TH. Ideally, selenium should be taken as organic selenomethionine, the form in human tissues. The upper tolerable limit is 600 mcg/day and experts generally recommend 50-200 mcg/day. Selenium is part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which speeds the activity of the powerful antioxidant glutathione against damaging free radicals, particularly hydrogen peroxide (which it converts to water). This mineral thus also protects the thyroid gland from the oxidative damage caused when its cells generate hydrogen peroxide to make TH. Where se-

lenium deficiency exists (common in celiac patients), high iodine levels often lead to the destruction of thyroid gland cells. Other Beneficial Nutrients and Herbs include: (1) Vitamin C/ascorbic acid [peppers, citrus fruits, strawberries, cruciferous vegetables]; (2) Vitamin D3; (3) Vitamin E; (4) Iron (deficiency lowers TH production; iron deficiency anemia decreases the beneficial effects of iodine supplementation, but iron supplementation improves it); (5) Zinc (moderate amounts) with copper; (6) Ashwaganda (studies suggest an effective dose of standardized 500mg/day) – lowers cortisol levels and may decrease TSH and increase T4 and T3 levels; and (7) Rhodiola rosea (not for hypertensive patients) – since stress impacts thyroid status, this adaptogenic herb can support the thyroid by managing the body’s stress response. The bottom line? There is no single correct approach to treating hypothyroidism. Regular blood testing and symptom monitoring generally will produce the best result for each patient. Is Hormone Imbalance Causing Infertility? By Cait Barbiero, ND ccording to the CDC, one in eight couples have difficulty becoming pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. Difficulty conceiving can lead to feelings of hopelessness, anger, frustration, and despair. Couples may ask themselves, “Why is this happening to us?” They might even believe that one of them is just completely infertile without cause; however, this is almost never the case.

A

Underlying Causes of Infertility and Hormonal imbalance From a disease standpoint, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is one of the leading causes of infertility. Yet, PCOS still occurs for a reason. Vitamin and mineral deficiency, poor immune function and gastrointestinal infection, improper nutrition and food sensitivities, mental/emotional trauma and stress, chronic inflammation and toxic overload are all important components to consider when evaluating the reason for hormonal conditions like PCOS or infertility. Deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids, the active form of B vitamins, magnesium, and protein can all greatly affect hormone status. The health of one’s gastrointestinal system is paramount to overall wellness and should be addressed before conceiving. Stress and adrenal fatigue are almost always present with hormonal imbalance and fertility troubles. This is quite important to consider, as stress shunts the hormone pathway away from hormones needed to sustain a pregnancy and instead towards cortisol. Toxicity also plays a significant role. Chemicals, heavy metals, and pesticides disrupt the natural biochemical processes in our bodies. Our bodies can detox toxins in small amounts, but if the toxic burden is high, the

liver is especially affected. Liver quality then affects hormone metabolism. Heavy metals, chemicals, and pesticides can all be linked to birth defects and from an intelligent body’s perspective, it would not be wise to pass these toxins onto a baby.

intake to at least 50% of every meal. Cut out inflammatory foods like sugar, white flour, packaged foods, fast foods, and gluten. Eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables, which contain indole-3-carbinol, which helps the liver to breakdown estrogen.

Natural Solutions 1. Testing is one of the best ways to gain information on the root cause. Important tests your ND or holistic practitioner may consider involve hormone levels including adrenals, vitamin and minerals, stool testing, as well as basic blood work. One of the most effective steps I recommend is getting tested for food IgG sensitivities. Food sensitivities can wreak havoc on one’s GI system, causing systemic inflammation and adding to the toxic load the liver has to metabolize. The more inflammation and toxins your body is fighting off, the more the body shunts hormone production towards cortisol and away from progesterone/estrogen. Additionally, ask your practitioner to test for MTHFR, a genetic mutation related to B vitamins and the ability to detox. MTHFR can have a profound affect upon fertility, as women with MTHFR should not be taking folic acid. Instead, they should supplement with methylfolate (active B9) as well as an active form of B12.

3. Detoxification might be necessary depending on the case. For couples attempting to get pregnant, a drastic detox is an incorrect initial step. Since our bodies are intelligent, we have built in detoxification processes and supporting these organs of elimination is the best way to begin. Please do not implement a detox on your own and especially if you are actively trying to get pregnant or if you are pregnant. Often times the most simple health strategies are the most effective: drink lots of clean water to ensure you are flushing the toxins out, eat organic whole foods (whole foods means not packaged), exercise (sweat it out), manage that stress and get lots of sleep.

2. Nutrition is pivotal to creating healthy hormones. A healthy hormone diet is whole foods based, full of organic vegetables and includes a variety in color. Fish should be wild caught and meat should be pastured raised. Since the liver is central to hormones, consider cutting down on alcohol and caffeine intake. Other basic guidelines include eating organic when possible and increasing vegetable

4. Supplementation to consider includes: liver support such as milk thistle, a food based prenatal multivitamin with added active forms of B9 and B12, a quality probiotic, magnesium, vitamin d3, and fish oil. Often overlooked by the conventional medical community is the fact that our bodies are intelligent. Symptoms and disease are produced for a reason by our physiology, frequently as an adaptive strategy to deal with an underlying root cause. In other words, if a couple is not conceiving or if hormonal imbalance is occurring, it is often because an organ system is out of balance. The imbalance can be stemming from one partner or both. As one begins to realize that infertility www.NaturalNutmeg.com

and hormonal dysregulation do not exist in a vacuum without reason, treatment can shift to addressing the underlying causes. This will in turn impact physiology, which can then bring hormone balance and fertility. Dr. Cait Barbiero is a Naturopathic doctor at ProNatural Physicians in Berlin, CT. A Divine Approach to Fulfilling Your Destiny By Robin Clare ne of the most common lessons we all learn on the spiritual journey is that we have lived many past lives and that we are here in this lifetime to heal traumas from those past lifetimes. This common lesson certainly brands our life in a negative light. Yet, what if the main reason you are here is to generate positive outcomes? A life of positive outcomes requires you to set positive intentions, have a positive attitude and initiate positive actions for yourself, your family, your friends and our world. This journey of your positive outcomes is the fulfillment of your Soul purpose or destiny. On the path to fulfilling your Soul’s destiny, you recognize the need to heal the traumas of your past because these traumas may be blocking your greatest potential.

O

When I first heard of the concept of Soul’s destiny and healing the traumas of my past, I began to wonder where is the information from these past lifetimes stored and how can I get access to the information? This quest for knowledge of my Soul’s unique journey led me to the Akashic Records – a library of our past, present and future lifetime information. According to Linda Howe, Akashic expert, “The Akashic Records can be understood as the “Cosmic Chronicles of You”: an energetic archive, or dimension of consciousness, that tells the story of your Soul’s journey through space and time as a Human Being. Past, Present and Future There are basic universal truths that are consistent across all clients, as well as abundant information that is unique to the person’s records. An example of a universal truth is how the Akashic Records defines the past, present and future of our life. Our past is defined as one second ago and before. In each lifetime, we live a past lifetime every 18 years. Most of the infor-

mation comes from our time in the lifetimes from this incarnation. The Akashic Records define the present as this exact moment in time. Much of the information shared is designed to help you make decisions that impact your life right now. After all, the present moment is the only moment we know for sure is possible to make changes in our life. The future is defined as one second from now and forward. The messages about your future lifetimes in this lifetime are designed to help you plan and accomplish your Soul’s desired destiny for this lifetime. A future incarnation will only be shared within the Akashic Records if you or a loved one will have a direct impact on the future of humanity. Soul’s Collective Information from your Akashic Records is shared by a group of non-physical Beings called your Soul’s Collective. These loving Beings are assigned to help you achieve your destiny in this lifetime. Your Soul’s Collective is comprised of Ascended Masters, Spirit Guides, Angelic Beings, Mystical Teachers and Deceased Loved Ones. For sure, you are not alone in this lifetime! Because we are a Soul Being having a Human Being experience, it has become quite apparent that our Soul has been leading us on this incarnation as a Human Being. If that is true, then why isn’t life easier? Spiritual expert Caroline Myss has shared that, “Self-esteem is our actual core power that is essential to our evolutionary progress. Your potential for success in life is determined by how greatly you esteem or value who you truly are.” Therefore, low self-esteem can lead to undermining your own life. Your Soul’s Collective desires for you to understand why the same unsettling patterns appear in your life or why some

relationships work and others don’t or why you are not meeting your own success goals. Another universal truth that explains these obstacles is applicable to each one of us, “Until you understand the gift of any situation, you are destined to repeat it.” Your Soul’s Collective is ready, available and anxious to share with you many “ahha” moments. Your Soul’s Collective will make suggestions for improvements in your personal and professional life in a constructive and practical manner. What would your life be like if you knew your Soul’s desired destiny and you understood the gift of your life experiences? Would you be more relaxed, creative, have faith in your own inner wisdom and excited about your future? When you connect the dots of your past and present experiences with a knowing of your future destiny, it is possible to live a life in alignment with the unlimited resources of the Universe, available to you always. BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

From Patient to Respant

U

nfortunately doctors and health professionals, in general, do not study success. We are far more likely to consider an unexpected recovery to be due to the treatment or a spontaneous remission. However, I have learned from my experience with patients and by asking them, “Why didn’t you die when you were supposed to?” that they always had a story to tell. I can recall as an intern, realizing that the seniors with hip fractures who were noisy and demanding didn’t develop pneumonia and die; while the submissive, quiet seniors who never raised their voice or caused a problem had a much higher mortality rate. By speaking up and becoming a problem patient you become identified as a person and not by your room number or disease and, therefore, are far less likely to have a fatal or non-fatal medical error made while being cared for. The word patient derives its meaning from submissive sufferer. That is not a good thing to be when hospitalized or receiving medical treatment of any kind. You need to be a respant, or responsible participant if you want to heal and survive. We now know from studies how one’s emotions and personality affect survival rates. I was criticized years ago for speaking about many things no one had researched because no one believed they made sense. Simple things like laughter affecting the survival of cancer patients and loneliness affecting the genes which control immune function are now proven to be true by studies. Survival behavior and an immune competent personality are not an accident or luck. Those in the mental health field are far more likely to be aware of this because of what they see happen to their patients. When people have a sense of meaning in their life, express anger and emotions appropriately in defense of themselves, ask for help from family and friends, participate in their health care decisions, say no to what they choose not to do, find time to do what they enjoy and to play, use their feelings to help them to heal their lives and do not live a role but an authentic life, they will always do better than expected. Disease is a loss of health, not punishment, and your health is to be looked for as you would seek to find your lost car keys. Decades ago I invited one hundred cancer patients to attend a support group and live a longer better life. I expected them to bring friends and family members and that I would have hundreds of people to deal with. Less than a dozen women showed up for the first meeting. Those who showed up became labeled exceptional cancer patients because they were a minority but what they reveal to us is our potential. Difficult patients do not die when they are supposed to. Those with inspiration who transform their lives and rebirth themselves give their bodies live messages and the body then does the best it can for them. Our bodies love us but if we do 42

Natural Nutmeg - September 2017

not love our life and bodies it sees illness and death as a way to be free of our afflictions. Monday morning supports that with more heart attacks, strokes, illnesses and suicides. When you let an MD, or Medical Deity, determine whether you live or die you are giving away your power. I have seen people, whose hope was taken away by doctors, commit suicide or go home, climb into bed and die. I have also seen others get damn angry at their doctors and go on to survive for many years or be cured of their disease. You have to start with a belief in yourself and faith in all the things you incorporate into your life and choose as therapy. A patient of mine who was a landscaper refused treatment for his cancer because it was springtime and he wanted to go home and make the world beautiful before he died. He lived to be ninety-four and became my teacher. The mind is indeed a powerful thing and not emphasized enough in the medical information we receive during our training. That is why I work at deceiving people into health by working with their beliefs and communicating with them in a positive way rather than listing all the side effects they will have and none of the advantages of therapy. Doctors need training in communication and hypnotic techniques. We can kill or cure with words or scalpels. Patients need to be respants and keep their power and feel free to change doctors and criticize them in a constructive way. The best doctors are criticized by patients, nurses and family. Why? Because they do not make excuses and learn from their mistakes. Believe me if your doctor or their loved ones have suffered a major illness they are no longer a spectator or tourist. So love yourself, take responsibility for and participate in your life and state of health. This is not about avoiding dying but about living and its beneficial side effects. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to becalled-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all overthe Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our Society grapples with today. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of the month 1:30-3:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge. If interested contact Lucille Ranciato: lranciato2@yahoo.com 203 288 2839; or Bernie: bugsyssiegel@sbcglobal.net. You can find Bernie’s books ad CDs at Wisdom of the Ages in Simsbury, Ct.
