ur 1st annual reader-nominated 10Best Awards was a huge hit last year! It brought massive awareness throughout the state for Holistic Businesses & Practitioners and Natural Nutmeg and we received amazing feedback from the winners and readers. Many business owners in categories like Natural Product Companies, Spas, Wineries, Breweries, and Farm-to-Table restaurants said they just discovered the magazine and didn’t realize their customers were avid readers and fans. Because of this we were able to increase our advertiser demographic and distribution and holistic business owners increased their exposure! This year, our 2nd annual 10BEST awards are happening from September 1st-15th. As a Natural Nutmeg reader, you have the opportunity to nominate your favorite holistic practitioner or business in 20 categories listed on page 10. Please go to https://tinyurl.com/NN10Best to place your nominations by midnight September 15th! Please take the time to make these nominations! These awards are a fantastic way for business owners to increase their market share and expand their business. Most businesses experience 37% more growth after winning a local award. Our Connecticut holistic practitioners are extremely passionate about helping their local communities and they need you to help them bring more awareness to all of the amazing natural and ecofriendly choices we have in this great state. THE BUZZ September is Back to School Month

T

hat means a lot of changes. Different schedules have to be put in place, more traffic and cars are on the road and that time we had to play, take a day trip or go to the movies is scheduled with activities, homework and the onset of the holidays. So how can you keep the easy spirit of summer and carve out time for yourself as your whole life changes tempo? Well it’s not just kids that have to go back to school. Adults could use the education as well. One of the best ways to keep your mental acuities is to keep learning, studying and grow your knowledge in ways that interest you and broaden your horizons. Where can you find a class or workshop on various subjects that doesn’t cost a mortgage? The first place to look is actually not YouTube or the internet but your town. As we age it can get harder and harder to meet people and create connections and companions. That’s why when you engage in your community you can meet people who have similar interests and are close by so after the course is over you could meet up for lunch or coffee. Many towns have a park and recreation department that provides various classes ranging from foreign language, computers, cooking and art to exercise classes. There are arts annexes and organizations that hold classes in painting, photography, sculpture, and writing. You can check museums or science centers that may be having lectures or workshops in conjunction with specific exhibits. You can even consider your local yoga studio for classes or workshops in yoga, meditation, essential oils or a 200hr yoga teacher training. It is so important to find new things to learn that peak your interests and help you become well rounded and a fountain of information. Then when the details of what we’ve learned have faded into the background we will still have some good friends with similar interests that can last a lifetime. For more information on workshops and teacher trainings with Justine at Fuller Yoga in either Glastonbury or West Hartford, please visit www.fulleryoga.com. See ad on page 43.

Dr. Ayelet Connell Presents GlutenFree and Paleo Cooking Classes at West Hartford’s Cookshop Plus

W

est Hartford’s very own Cookshop Plus, a family owned and operated business that offers gourmet kitchenware, homewares, and a coffee bar in West Hartford Center, is pairing up with Dr. Ayelet Connell and presenting a series of cooking classes focusing on Gluten-Free and the Paleo Diet. Dr. Connell will be teaching a series of classes available to the community, teaching people how to cook and bake gluten-free and ‘paleo’. The first class will be on Wednesday evening, September 26, at 6:30pm. (Registration is through the Cookshop Plus website or storefront. Cost to register is $65.) For many years, the Gluten-free diet has been touted to support chronic pain and other inflammatory conditions. Over the past decade, the Paleo diet has also gained momentum in the natural health world. Research has shown that the Paleo diet is very effective in reducing inflammatory syndromes as well as auto-immune dysfunction. The main emphasis of the Paleo diet is to eat ample fresh foods such as fresh vegetables and fruit, natural meat, fish, natural eggs, nuts and seeds, along with ample healthy fats. During these cooking classes, Connell will have students participate in cooking a multi-course meal (with dessert!) that fits the Paleo diet. Students will leave with easy-to-follow recipes along with new knowledge on the benefits of gluten-free and Paleo and how to incorporate into your life. Connell has spent the last 25 years growing her love of natural cooking and developing her knowledge and skills in the kitchen through grass-roots living. Currently, she is a Natural Food Blogger and Healthy Eating Coach, specializing in Gluten-free and the Paleo diet.

ith years in the marketing industry and a passion for healthcare, Neil Anand decided to set out and do his own thing by opening ComForCare Home Care in his hometown. The franchise is one of hundreds located nationwide, with three other Connecticut-based ComForCare locations in Danbury, Stamford, and Avon. “The point is preserving and enhancing the quality of life so that seniors can continue living at home,” Anand said. “We are here to do the best we can so they can continue to live at home. Generally speaking, people prefer to stay at home as long as they can.” ComForCare offers personalized care plans for seniors depending on their individual needs. Services include grooming care and general hygiene, transportation for errands, companionship, cooking, respite care, Alzheimer’s / Parkinson’s care, and more. ComForCare offers a range of hourly, overnight, and live-in caregiver options. The home care industry has evolved over the years, and it is not just about assistance with common activities of daily living (ADLs). ComForCare develops personal relationships with their clients, which allows them to create individualized care plans to assist in those activities of interest, including a music program that they developed in-house. Their clients grow to love their caregivers and look forward to spending time with them. Home care also extends beyond helping seniors; it can be for anyone who requires this type of assistance. Additional services include child care, transition of care after discharge from a facility, hospital sitter service, recovery after surgery or accident, expectant and new mom assistance, and worker’s compensation cases. To learn more about ComForCare Home Care, please visit their website at ComForCare.com/FairfieldCT or by calling 203.612.8966 to schedule a free initial consultation.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Aging skin? Sun damage? Age Spots? Acne?

R

idgefield esthetician and owner of Nature's Pure Skin Care, Patricia Hunsberger has been in the esthetic field for 13+ years. At Nature's Pure Skin Care we provide a higher level of skin care to address all of your concerns. Her passion and focus is regenerative treatments. Patricia's approach to her business is "how many people can I help today." Regenerative is the renewal, regrowth or restoration of tissue at a cellular level and this is the cornerstone of her skin care business. Whether your concern is aging skin, sun damage, age spots, or acne, the skin must first be balanced and healed before it can truly improve. Damage at a cellular level occurs with all the conditions mentioned above, and this is where the healing and repairing properties of amazing stem cells in their purest form come in. Unfortunately as we age our stem cells lose function and in addition the amount we have decline. "Stem cells are the future of skin care and exactly where the esthetic field is headed," says Hunsberger. "Science and technology is what gives us such amazing products today and I am glad to be part of this. Giving people a better, safer, natural choice is very important to me. Having the ability to educate my clients and let them know of non-invasive truly effective treatments makes everything I do of value. Harnessing the body's own chemistry and healing properties says it all, it doesn't get better than that," Patricia says. She repairs and rejuvenates the skin through customized treatments in combination with stem cells. All of her products are organic, non-toxic, gluten free and are safe enough even to be used on oncology patients. Patricia is a big believer in educating her clients and suggesting clean food choices. She says," nutrition is the foundation of your health and also crucial for healthy glowing skin." Most of Patricia's client see her every 4-6 weeks and she is counting on them to keep up their skin care regimen at home in between sessions with her. Learn more about Nature's Pure Skin Care at naturespureskincare.com. To make an appointment call 845-270-9694. Located at 109 Danbury Road Ridgefield Ct. Suite D4. See ad on page 14.

Is It Anxiety or My Diet?

O

ne of the most important principles of holistic health is balance. This includes internally balanced levels of the various blood markers, hormones and neurotransmitters within your body. It also means external balance of the different aspects of your life: family, career, relationships, life stresses, and environment. You can only be unbalanced for so long before physical symptoms show up in your body. Last week a 20-year-old woman came into my office complaining of headaches, feeling jittery and weak. She had been on 10 different medications for anxiety over the last 5 years and nothing was working. It was no surprise to me because within 5 minutes of discussing her symptoms and a brief medical intake, I diagnosed her as hypoglycemic. Her diet consisted of less than 10 grams of protein per day and loads of simple carbohydrate foods. No wonder she was hypoglycemic – her blood sugar and insulin were on a rollercoaster all day long. I recommended she increase her daily protein intake with protein smoothies in the morning and other sources such as organic, free range meats, eggs and beans throughout the day. I also suggested adding more organic greens and berries so she had more nutrients for her brain to produce healthy neurotransmitters which can help with any possible anxiety issues. With just these and a few other simple changes, she has already contacted me saying that she feels much better, more grounded and stable throughout the day. This is a classic example of how conventional medicine often misses the complete picture, and how a holistic, natural perspective can resolve many health issues by addressing underlying causes and supporting the person’s own basic vital needs. Submitted by Dr. Kurt Beil. As a licensed naturopathic physician and acupuncturist, Dr. Beil has treated a range of chronic health conditions, including mental health concerns, auto-immune disease, musculo-skeletal complaints, digestive issues, cardiovascular disease, Lyme disease and co-infections, environmental toxicities, and various chemical dependencies. Nutmeg “Nuggets” Alternative to the Flu Shot?

Natural Therapy for Healthy Aging

W

T

ith the fall season approaching, we can revel in cooler days and beautiful foliage while sipping our pumpkin spice latte. However, somewhere along the line, this beautiful season has become synonymous with “flu shot season”. Previously, flu inoculations were only recommended for the elderly or those with a high susceptibility risk. Over the past several years, this recommendation has expanded to include everyone over six months of age, healthy or not, regardless of risk status or immune function. Yet, recent research suggests that the flu shot may not be the best choice for everyone. So is a yearly flu shot really necessary for everyone?

herapeutic massage can help you feel good at any stage of life. It is especially beneficial as you grow older for a number of reasons that you may not have considered. Massage for older adults is incredibly helpful in maintaining joint flexibility. As we age, our joints naturally produce less of the fluid that helps them move smoothly. Without this lubrication, joints can feel like a rusty metal hinge. Massage to the joints, along with range of motion movements, aid in the production of joint fluid. When our joints are less stiff we are inclined to move more. Moving helps keep muscles strengthened, improves balance and contributes to feelings of independence.

In a healthcare climate where many are seeking alternatives to conventional treatment, I receive many requests in my practice for alternatives to the conventional flu shot including both prevention and treatment of illness. Specific homeopathic formulations provide one option that can be effective for many individuals. Homeopathy is based upon the observation that some diseases may be healed by a particular substance that produces similar effects in a healthy person. Homeopathic remedies are derived from a myriad of substances and individually prescribed based upon a patient’s needs. It is a powerful way to stimulate the human immune system’s innate ability to fight off infection and shorten illness.

With the aging process our skin loses elasticity, becomes thinner and drier. A soothing massage can really work in an application of nourishing lotion or oil. Hard to reach areas on the legs and back of the body can be addressed by a massage therapist. With her trained eye, she may spot any unusual looking skin lesions so that a doctor can take a closer look. Another benefit of massage is to the lymphatic system, which lies just under the skin. This system works to promote health in many ways and light massage stimulates drainage of the system to help keep it working efficiently. Perhaps the most important benefit massage can offer is the effect it has on our mental and emotional state. Some common causes of stress as we age are poor sleep quality, feelings of isolation and lack of human touch. Massage has been shown to improve sleep by boosting serotonin levels and reducing levels of the stress hormone cortisol. In addition, establishing a therapeutic relationship with a good practitioner helps the client feel emotionally connected and well cared for. Whether you are already active or seeking ways to increase your physical or emotional well-being, massage is an enjoyable and effective way to support your health goals.

There is a unique proprietary homeopathic formula that can be dosed throughout the flu season decreasing susceptibility to the flu and supporting your immune system. It is best to begin dosing in the fall. For more information or for a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation to determine if this may be a good option for you, contact www.coastalnaturalmedicine.com. Dr. Kathryn Firisin at Coastal Natural Medicine is a licensed naturopathic physician in Southport, CT with over 20 years of experience in healthcare. She is an expert in natural medicine and utilizes homeopathy as well as many natural therapeutics to help her patients achieve optimal health. The ABC and E's of Accident and Injury: The Importance of an Integrated Healthcare Approach By DJ Horn, LPC, PT, CST

H

ey, quick question. Where was the rest of your body when your knee fell down the stairs or when your neck was in a car accident?

Over thirty years of experience in various therapeutic capacities has afforded me the opportunity to see a trend that compromises the health and wellness of many people. The bottom line is we have become too compartmentalized in how to therapeutically treat people who have been injured. Areas of the body are treated without consideration or regard for the whole person, physically and emotionally. This is illustrated no better than in the occurrence of accident or injury. Countless people have fallen down stairs, slipped on ice or been in motor vehicle accidents. Often, diagnostic procedures and treatment are directed toward the “squeaky wheel”...the body part that hurts. The problem is that the whole body, and everything the body has experienced, contributes to the pain and dysfunction of any one part in the present moment. It’s part of the internal environment. When this body part is ignored during treatment, the injury is only temporarily better or struggles to get better at all. I see many people stuck in dysfunctional cycles which contribute to frustration, hopelessness and depression. The “ABC”s to an integrated treatment approach addresses all the physical and emotional strain patterns AT the time of the accident, BEFORE the accident and the Cumulative, Combined and Compensatory events after the accident. AT the Time of the Accident: there are many possible physical injuries that occur. Some of these injuries are obvious and are usually treated appropriately. However, there are many other strain patterns (physical and emotional restrictions) that “fly below the radar”.

They are significant and have a tremendous effect on the entire body to heal. An example seen in almost all accidents and injuries is the lodging of physical force. It creates tightening and tensions the body has to overcome. It’s exhausting. It obstructs healing. It contributes to the compensatory mechanisms further putting the body at risk for more problems. An example of this force is a torsion force from a car accident in a belted passenger. When the car stops abruptly, the seat belt locks and a rotation happens in the spine and rib cage. This force creates a strain pattern the body has to work around. Many patients I see who are not getting better after an accident have a torsion force stuck in their bodies. BEFORE the Accident: you existed. Every bump, bruise, injury, illness or mechanical and postural strain pattern that was never resolved is part of your internal environment at the time of the accident. Some of these strain patterns lie dormant and others are actively creating symptoms. When there is an accident or injury, all the acute strain patterns that happen AT the time of the accident are layered on top of everything that currently exists in the body. Immediately after the accident, some strain patterns that were dormant are now activated; they are creating their own effect on you. Often, the new and old strain patterns are entangled creating a more complex physical environment. Many patients I have seen that are not responding to treatment often have complex strain patterns limiting the effects of specific and isolated treatment. The CUMULATIVE, COMBINED AND COMPENSATORY processes begin immediately after the accident. The A + B is creating new strain patterns in a slow cumulative way. As time goes on, the compensatory strain patterns begin to emerge as changes in posture, movement or tightening in response to pain occur. These patterns may exacerbate symptoms from the “AT," the “BEFORE," or create an even more complex pattern, the “ABC." Many patients that I see, sometimes years after the accident, present with this latter pattern. To treat just the back or the knee or the neck is insufficient and ineffective. It is also EXHAUSTING and EMOTIONALLY challenging for the patient. By addressing the ABCs and the emotional factors stored in the body, wellness is both attainable and sustainable. By “listening” to the wisdom of the body, the pathway of an integrated approach becomes clear. Isolated events or body parts cannot be separated from each other. People must be seen and treated as whole, in the entirety of their physical and emotional experiences. Healing is not a linear process. You are not one dimensional and your therapy shouldn’t be either. Natural Remedies to Reduce Stress By Donna Bunte, LAc hysical and emotional stress is a fact of modern life. We all experience it one way or another and sometimes it can help when motivating us to perform well.

P

What exactly happens is the hormone epinephrine or adrenaline is released by the sympathetic nervous system stimulating the fight or flight response which comes in really handy in a dangerous situation. After the initial response, cortisol is released from the adrenal glands to keep the body on high alert. When the threat passes, the parasympathetic nervous system puts on the brakes and cortisol declines. In chronic stress experienced over long periods of time this system is kept active and the body continues to pump these hormones which cause inflammation and can lead to serious health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, digestive disorders, insomnia, lack of concentration, lowering of the immune system which sets us up for more sickness, and the list goes on. Cancer has even been linked to the chronic release of stress hormones in the body. Some people thrive on that constant energy rush that keeps them going on overdrive. They feel like they have accomplished more in a day. The other problem with persistent elevated cortisol levels is that it adds to the buildup of fat tissue and to weight gain, increases appetite and increases the storage of unused nutrients as fat. It seems stress is not going to go away any time soon, so we need to learn techniques to manage it. There are many choices out there that we can luckily use and some we can do ourselves.

1. Relaxation Response

2. Meditation and Prayer

One way is to invoke the relaxation response through a technique first developed in the 1970s at Harvard Medical School by cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson. The relaxation response is a state of profound rest that can be elicited in many ways, including breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation.

Meditation and prayer have been used for thousands of years to help people deal with stress and finding peace of mind. Meditation doesn’t have to be a huge time commitment but can be done for just a few minutes at a time throughout the day. It is good to make it a routine and also use it in times of high stress.

Breathing into the abdomen physically calms the heart and the nervous system, sends more oxygen to the cells and removes the carbon dioxide. Deep breaths use all of the lungs and encourages full oxygen exchange. This expansion of the abdomen stimulates the vagus nerve, which elicits a relaxation response from the para-sympathetic nervous system. It physically calms the body down. Chest breathing can cause more nervousness and anxiety. The more nervous we are though, the more we tend to breath into only the chest. Therefore, it’s important to have a practice of abdominal breathing so that when we need it we have that routine.

There are many ways to meditate including using a mantra, visualization, mindfulness, and total body relaxation which have been proven to lower the stress response, help with anxiety, depression, sleep, eating problems, and lowering blood pressure.

3. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been used for at least 3000 years, and are now proven to be highly effective in managing stress. A 2001 UCLA study showed that acupuncture can block sympathetic nerve activity. Acupuncture can alleviate stress symptoms by releasing

endorphins - the body's own natural painkillers, and improve the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids, which brings fresh oxygen to body tissues. Chinese medicine says that the free flow is blocked by stress, diet, injury, and pathogens. The liver is the organ that deals with stress in Chinese medicine. When liver Qi is obstructed, we get muscle pain and tension, digestive problems and anxiety. By restoring the flow of Qi or energy and calming the liver Qi balance, our equilibrium is attained. 4. Exercise Exercise and yoga are one of the best choices for everyday stress relief. We produce endorphins, which are natural pain relievers and mood enhancers. Regular exercise helps people regulate mood, improve their insulin sensitivity and blood sugar levels, as well as help people to sleep better.

Embracing the Garden

By Shannon Carey

M

ixing together egg whites, seaweed powder, and vegetable pigment sounds like the beginning of a witches brew. This concoction will soon be paint used in an art classroom. Taking cues from Renaissance painters there is a group of educators using the garden for more than visual inspiration. In a community that is learning to shun single use plastic, speak out on the dangers of chemical based fertilizers, and look for energy alternatives, why have we not yet embraced an ecological change in the classroom.

on and begun to change their school for the better. Their garden wasn’t put up by volunteers and forgotten, but it has become an essential part of many of the school’s curricular threads. Science classes wander outside for bird and bug watching. Math classes use the plants in the garden to learn about symmetry, and art class was brought outside to learn about observational drawing and botany. This idea that gardens can be multi-faceted and used beyond a single purpose is one we should be embracing and seeking out.

A survey of seven Metro Nashville Public School art classrooms found that each classroom had an average of 346 crayons. There are over 70 elementary schools in Nashville, if you take 346, and multiple it by 70 that means over 24,000 crayons are in Nashville alone. Now, let’s look nationally, the United states has about 90,000 registered elementary schools. Multiply 346 by 90,000 we are looking at 31,140,000 crayons in elementary schools, alone! Thirty-one million crayons, that is a staggering number. Thirty-one million crayons made with questionable materials, through less than ecological processes.

Like the elementary school in Nashville, we in Connecticut need to look to our gardens for more than their expected use. Below is a list of four creative ways to elevate your garden beyond its expected use:

Let’s get back to the witches brew from earlier. All three materials listed (egg whites, seaweed powder, and vegetable pigment) came from gardens. The eggs were purchased at Double L Market in Westport, and came from someone’s backyard in Easton. The seaweed powder was grown in San Francisco on a seaweed farm, and the pigment came from spinach grown in an art garden in Ridgefield. Our gardens are powerful resources for more than just food, why do we often not see them in this way? Crieve Hall Elementary School in Nashville, TN has taken that question head

on the garden floor and rot, double the environmental value by allowing it to help create fertilizer for the following season. 2. Preserve What You Can Sometimes we grow more than we need, and a surplus of food can mean a surplus of food waste. Instead, get creative and ferment what you can. Is there extra kohlrabi looking back at you right now? Treat it like a radish & ferment for a fun sour treat. Here’s a great recipe: • 3 c. Washed & Sliced Kholrabi • 2 -3 Peeled Garlic Cloves • 3 tbs. Salt • 4 c. Filtered Water

Mix your water and salt together to create a brine. Add your kholrabi & garlic to a sterilized mason jar. Pour brine solution over Sometimes when we are growing food kohlrabi. Leave to ferment 4 - 7 days in a cool we will have produce knocked off the vine room away from sunlight. (Ferment 4 days for too early, or we will lose bits and pieces to our animal friends. Whenever you see a scrap less sour kholrabi, 7 days for extra sour kholof food from your garden you won’t use put it rabi). Once fully fermented place in refrigerain your compost! Rather than letting it wallow tor and enjoy. 1. Look for Scraps

Planting for bees, specifically, is one of the best ways you can turn a good garden into a great garden. Plants such as Black Eyed Susan, Golden Rod, & Summer Lilac all make attractive garden additions for bees and the human eye. No one likes a rabbit in their garden, but we do like to see wildlife in our environment and should avoid chemical fertilizers. Embrace the wildlife and plant a garden that invites their company but keeps their snacking at bay. Inter-planting marigolds with crops will ward off deer. Placing a dummy owl will frighten birds, and adding netting to berries and tomatoes are just a few examples on how to keep wildlife around, but deter them from our gardens. Our gardens can be used for more than growing and harvesting. The above suggestions will allow you to keep harvesting and enjoying a healthy garden, but there are plenty more ideas on how to have a garden that is productive beyond a physical yield. Creating art and lifestyle materials from our gardens are all within your reach if you look hard enough, and I invite you to do so! A Multifaceted Approach to a Healthy, Happy Gut

By Antonio Reale, ND, MS t has been said that inflammation is the cause of almost every disease and this is especially true when it comes to disorders of the gut. Intestinal inflammation not only causes GI upset and symptoms of discomfort but can also make it difficult to absorb nutrients from foods and supplements. If your GI tract is not functioning properly, it's likely you're not getting all the nutrients from your diet or supplement plan, which is why GI health is an essential part of whole body wellness. Without a happy, healthy, functioning gut, it can be difficult to achieve optimal health. Fortunately, naturopathic medicine has much to offer in this area and the approach to GI health is multifaceted, with a conversation on everything from probiotics and digestive enzymes to anti-inflammatory herbs and herbal antibiotics.

I

Demulcents & Anti-inflammatory Herbs Whether you're suffering from acid reflux, IBS, or frequent bloating, it's important to use herbs that have soothing and antiinflammatory properties but also work to heal the intestinal lining. In herbal medicine, we often categorize herbs based on their medicinal properties and this is where the "demulcents" come into play - herbs that are calming to the mucous membranes. I like to tell patients demulcents are to the GI tract what emollients are to the skin; just as you might apply a moisturizing cream to soothe cracked, irritated skin on a cold day, demulcents are ideal for irritated and inflamed intestinal tissue. If you can imagine the gelatinous fluid that oozes from the Aloe leaf, you have a good understanding of how these herbs can calm and soothe irritated tissue. Marshmallow, the name for the candy used to make s'mores, comes from the herb that most certainly came first. Although these herbs are useful in reducing inflammation, most GI protocols would be incomplete without a glutamine supplement to restore and regenerate new tissue. Glutamine, an amino acid, helps to promote healthy growth of the intestinal lining, serving as "fuel" for the enterocytes, cells that line the gut.

to gas and bloating. I like to ask a lot of questions about the timing of symptoms and specifically which foods are causing the most problems because not all digestive support supplements are created equal. In some cases, patients will benefit from a formula that combines pancreatic enzymes with other natural agents, such as bile to improve fat digestion and Betaine HCl to increase stomach acid protein breakdown. An in-depth discussion on diet can help your doctor to choose the best formula for you. Probiotics / "Commensal" Flora You've probably heard about probiotics and the wonders these living bacteria can do for our digestive tracts, but most people are understandably unfamiliar with the term "commensal." I like to start my conversation on probiotics by defining the term because I think it helps to put the importance of gut bacteria into perspec-

Enzymes & Digestion When it comes to GI health, it isn't all about the herbs. One of the most common symptoms I see in practice is bloating, and if they're paying attention, most patients can pinpoint the foods that are the biggest culprits. When patients remove problematic foods like dairy and gluten but experience little relief, it becomes clear that something else is going on. Enzymes released from the pancreas help to break down foods, especially carbohydrates, and move the digestive process along. If these enzymes are not released properly or are insufficient, this can quickly lead www.NaturalNutmeg.com

tive. Commensal comes from Latin, roughly translating to "coming together at the table." This translation speaks to the symbiotic relationship between our bodies and the trillions of gut bacteria living inside our digestive tracts. We need them just as much as they need us to survive and imbalances in the levels of good flora, referred to as dysbiosis, can lead to a variety of symptoms. Choosing the right dose and strain of probiotics is essential in improving gut health and sometimes, more isn't always better. An overgrowth in the commensal flora can cause bloating as these bacteria feast on foods you eat, fermenting them and forming gasses responsible for bloating. By ensuring the proper levels of healthy flora and digestive enzymes, we can minimize bloating and discomfort. Stool Testing

In some cases, the patient's symptoms are less straightforward, and this is where advance stool testing can help narrow the focus and lead to a more advanced treatment plan. A comprehensive stool test can determine the levels of pancreatic enzymes and beneficial bacteria and whether there is an excess of fats and proteins in the stool, (an indicator of malabsorption). It's not uncommon to see an imbalance in the gut bacteria, with either too much or too little of a specific strain of beneficial bacteria. Stool testing helps your doctor to determine which probiotic is best for you and whether it's necessary to reduce the levels of gut bacteria using herbal antibiotics. What's more impressive: the most comprehensive of stool tests will culture potentially harmful bacteria (and fungus) and test against a variety of medications and herbal antimicrobials to determine which treatment plan is most effective. While there are many herbs with strong antibacterial properties, stool testing through a specialty lab can help your doctor choose the most specific protocol for your condition. Can You

?

By Kirby Poirier, LMT aybe you're surprised to know that the three following statements are common to me (and probably most bodyworkers):

M

1. Thank you! I didn't realize how much I needed that! 2. You can use more pressure if you want. 3. My (insert area of concern here) hurts, so please don't work there.

Perhaps you've even said one or more of these statements to your massage therapist. All of these statements have something in common to me as they project a level of detachment from peoples’ minds to their own bodies. After thirteen years as a practicing Licensed Massage Therapist, I witness the fact that we all suffer on a daily basis. Certain types of suffering are easy to identify, while others like stress aren't. I'll bet you can think of people in your world who have failed stress tests, never stop, can't sit still, complain constantly, or simply do too much. These are the people who frequently say, "I didn't realize how much I needed that!" These are the people who are so busy that they've unknowingly disconnected from their body. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm guessing that you know many of these people because I surely do. How often do you see people whose bodies are curved by the burdens of their lifestyle? They may complain of frequent headaches, low back pain, or general stiffness/pain. They may not realize that they are clenching their jaws all day while keeping their shoulders jacked up to their ears. There's actually a term for this: Armoring. It’s what we all instinctively do when we experience trauma or repeated stress. We protect ourselves like a defensive covering. That's right, our instinct tells us to tighten and protect, and for the most part we don't even know we are doing it.

Which brings me to the next statement. "You can use more pressure if you want." Think about that, maybe re-read it. This person is telling me that I can dig deep if I want to. When I'm working deeply on someone and they begin to pull away from my hand, this is a clear message that the pressure may be too much. So, what about what they want? Has the disconnection from their body taken over so much that they actually aren't sure about what they want? In that moment, I wish I could share with my client that I have learned a language over the years - a language that is clear to me but probably very overlooked by them. Know that any massage therapist worth their weight is having a conversation with your body while they're working on you. We pick up messages like excess heat, trigger points, armoring, releasing, or shifting. We could make an accurate hypothesis on what your physical (and probably emotional) body is asking for, or better yet responds to. Maybe the second statement would serve you better if said this way: "I'd like you to use more pressure. What are you feeling?" I'm not saying that there isn't a time and place for "more pain, more gain.” I'm simply suggesting that that time isn't all of the time. Can you let go enough to tune into what your body actually wants, and maybe even try something different? Let me give you a personal example. A friend gifted me a Raindrop Therapy Massage and she told me all about how great it was. As soon as I was ready to schedule my appointment, I honestly wanted to request just a regular ol' deep tissue massage since my lower back was bugging me. Something in my intuition though said to just go with it and try something new. Long story short, it was a wonderful session! It really felt like what I actually needed. I didn't need her to hurt me and dig her elbows into my lower back. What I needed was to just open myself up to a new type of massage therapy and it made all of the difference. To limit possibility is to cut off your innate inner wisdom. Try something new! Trust in the process and magic of all kinds of massage therapy. Can you let go and open yourself up to trust in the trained hands of your massage therapist? Who knows? You might just reconnect with your own body! Heal Anxiety by Facing Your Shadow

By Dan Lupacchino, LMT

I

’m going to let you in on a little secret. I’m a healer, and I have anxiety. That’s right. I didn’t really understand what anxiety was, nor did I realize that I have been suffering from it my whole life until a few years ago when I experienced my first panic attack. My anxiety attacks are very physical. I can be perfectly fine one moment and then the next moment my heart pounds, I can’t breathe, and I become dizzy. I have chest pains, my arms and neck go numb and my mind begins to race down a spiraling tunnel. It feels like I’m going to die, and I feel all alone. That is the worst part of my anxiety, feeling alone and trapped in its vicious cycle. Anxiety manifests differently for each person and can be categorized into various anxiety disorders.

Befriending Your Anxiety Although millions of Americans have experienced anxiety disorders in their lifetimes, those who suffer from it are often ridiculed, met with disbelief and a general lack of understanding. Yet, unless you have experienced it yourself, it’s hard to truly grasp how terrible and debilitating it can be. Like with any mental health issue, one cannot simply be told, “Can’t you get over it?” or “Oh just take a chill pill, you’re fine.” These compassionless statements are never helpful and further instill the feeling that something is wrong with the person. This can often lead to more anxiety.

I’m not a doctor or clinician, but my own healing journey with anxiety and the clients I support in their own process have lead me to a greater understanding. If we can look at it differently, we can begin to see that anxiety is actually one of our greatest Know Your friends. It just requires Soul Mission & that we face our shadow. Humans are a not one size fits all when it comes to wellness. My own path to wellness with anxiety has been a mix of holistic practices: talk therapy, plant-spirit medicine including homeopathy, herbal supplements, essential oils and various forms of body work (massage, Reiki, IET®, acupuncture, etc.) Each of these has been

a tremendous support in my healing with anxiety, by supporting me in facing my shadow. Modern psychology and various mystical and spiritual traditions all have the concept of a shadow, a secret part of us that for many is buried deep within, shunned and never acknowledged. For me the shadow is the part of ourselves that stores our deepest desires, fears, worries, negative thoughts, beliefs and emotions about ourselves, and the world around us. It is not necessarily what we would think of as our dark side, although it can certainly include aspects of that. Our shadow is the reservoir that holds everything in our life that we don’t want to face, keeping it in the dark. But, it lingers and is ever present like our physical shadows. It is my belief that when our shadow becomes too big, it starts to take control. Essentially our nervous system becomes overloaded and we short circuit, letting the shadow take the wheel. Our nervous systems have been wired to protect us from physical, emotional and mental trauma. It stores these experiences just like the shadow, so we can avoid the same experience in the future. Yet, humans aren’t so good at processing effectively and just store these highly charged experiences away only to have them potentially surface later as anxiety. Through my exploration in talk therapy and receiving body work to help me get in touch with my emotions and core deep feelings, I began to understand and realize that my previous traumas and experience were controlling my life, and I was living in a way that kept me stuck. At one point, I thought my anxiety was going to kill me,

when in reality what it was actually doing was giving me warning signs that something needed to change. Facing my shadow hasn’t been easy. It has required me to look at aspects of myself that I don’t like. I’ve had to view my thoughts and feelings about my family, my community and what drives my decisions. It has forced me out of living on autopilot and into a place of sovereignty. Your shadow/anxiety really just wants to be heard. These are wounded parts of us that need love and acknowledgement. I would encourage those dealing with anxiety to seek out support while exploring the shadow. It’s not something to do by one’s self. Although your anxiety may want you to believe that you are alone, it’s simply not true. There are many healers out there including myself that have healed and are healing from similar experiences. Healing anxiety can simply be about developing a better relationship with yourself, examining how you truly feel and giving yourself the freedom to live the way you desire.

Using Voice Dialogue to Break Through Your Blocks By Marianela Medrano, PhD, LPC

I

am often researching mental health modalities that can alleviate human suffering, build a steady bridge to the authentic self and increase creativity in the way people approach the issues troubling them. Voice Dialogue is a technique that fulfills all of the above. Here is my conversation with Bridgit Dengel Gaspard, an expert in this field and founder of the New York Voice Dialogue Institute. MM: How do you use Voice Dialogue to help people overcome success blocks? BG: Voice Dialogue operates on the fundamental principle that all of our selves are originally designed to protect us. When working with success blocks I facilitate different aspects related to the goal. For example, if I were working with someone who wanted to quit smoking (or was debating breaking up a relationship or whether to start their own business), I would genuinely listen to the pro and the con selves in relation to the issue. Obviously there is no debate about smoking. It's unhealthy. From a voice dialogue point of view, I honor the concerns of a self that doesn’t want to quit. For example, a shy self might be nervous about how to hold a conversation without the security of a cigarette in their hand. In Voice Dialogue resistance is not necessarily the problem, but the pointer to underlying motivations that are at odds with the desire to successfully move forward. We explore this and often find the problem is that many selves are working with outdated ideas and methods they’ve used since childhood. We would address the social anxiety directly and come up with ways to stay connected to the community and cease smoking. As seen in the New York Times and the Boston Globe

MM: Is there a connection between change and creativity and if so can Voice Dialogue expedite the change process? BG: The non-judgmental and innovative aspects of Voice Dialogue make it uniquely qualified to enhance the natural connection between change and creativity; which are linked as change inherently includes getting out of your usual habits and comfort zones. As Master Voice Dialogue facilitator, Miriam Dyak notes in “Voice Dialogue Facilitation: Exploring New Ground”, the important focus is to create real evolution rather than a lot of dramatic upheaval that may ultimately revert back to the same old patterns and not support lasting change. Voice Dialogue works gently with each self. Think about it like the trim tab on a rudder of a large ship. The trim tab is a tiny little rudder that is easy to move and as a result the giant rudder begins to move easily as well. But if you were to try to move the big rudder directly, you’d meet a huge amount of resistance (and potentially crash the ship!). By working closely with the different Selves (respecting their armor, concerns and gifts) and honoring how this is embodied, Voice Dialogue strengthens the ability to perceive and experience everyday reality through a more aware ego place, rather than by reacting directly through the selves. This develops new habits of centeredness, balance and self-awareness to support and hold the changes and new patterns of living. In Voice Dialogue, resistance is a self you can facilitate and enjoy the particular jewels of its wisdom. When we learn to do this, we have easier access to our inner selves and much more mastery over our energetic expression.

MM: What advice do you have for therapists who are curious about Voice Dialogue but feel hesitant about its use? BG: Attend the workshop as it includes a full, live demonstration of a classic voice dialogue session, so you will see how an individual self is facilitated and encouraged to express itself, full-throttle from its point of view, with no editing. Afterwards information that was communicated from the self is processed. Attending the workshop lets you see for yourself some aspects that are non-verbal as another element Voice Dialogue focuses on is “linkage,” the underlying energetic connection that can enliven all human interactions. This is the picture of the “invisible” part of a relationship, the energy that is behind our actions and words. Becoming aware of linkage (or the lack of it) and learning to link consciously (instead of just experiencing energetic connection and disconnection through the selves) makes it possible for us to be intimate with others and at the same time maintain healthy boundaries. Being aware of linkage lets us see a whole new layer of reality in relationships that was previously invisible. To learn more on your own time I recommend Embracing Our Selves, by the Drs. Stone & Stone, who developed this work. Another amazing how-to book I recommend is The Facilitators’ Voice Dialogue Handbook by Miriam Dyak. Keep in mind that on a simple level, our entire society thinks of themselves and others in terms of parts, so you can rely a bit on your common sense when adding parts work to your clinical practice. An example I use is that nearly everyone has experienced the phenomenon of

the alarm clock ringing at 5:30 AM. A part of you is adamant about staying in bed. Another part of you wants to be responsible and get out of bed. Still another part of you wants to play hooky and is excited to get up ONLY IF it means sneaking to the beach. Inner struggle ensues. This is a simple demonstration highlighting the fact that we are composed of many Selves, many parts of you, which is the basis of Voice Dialogue. Submitted by Marianela Medrano, PhD, LPC, Founder of Palabra Counseling & Training Center, LLC. Please see ad about upcoming workshop on October 21, 2018 on page 9, and ad on page 27.

Natural Treatments for Childhood Anxiety By Diana Zitserman, ND

A

nxiety disorders are becoming more prevalent in recent years. Adults and children alike suffer from various forms of anxiety, including extreme fear or worry, generalized anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive behavior, post-traumatic stress, selective mutism, separation anxiety, and specific phobias. Anxiety disorders are closely related and often overlap with other conditions, including depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mood imbalance, and body dysmorphia. One common denominator that raises anxiety levels and alters mood is chronic stress. Researchers in the field of psychoneuroimmunology, the study of the effect of the mind on health and resistance to disease, have identified that chronic stress can lead to or exacerbate anxiety and mood disorders. More specifically, it is our emotional signals or molecules that generate an adaptive stress response which directly affects our immune cells, hormones, and nervous system. As a result, anxious individuals experience signs and symptoms, such as body fidgeting, biting fingernails, tapping feet, racing heartbeat, shortness of breath, sweaty palms, nausea, and stomach discomfort. As persistent thought patterns associated with anxiety can lead to feelings of impending doom or helplessness, increased anxiety can also leave individuals vulnerable to depression, bipolar disorder, cognitive (thinking) problems, personality, or behavior changes. Every child experiences some temporary and usually harmless form of anxiety. While stress and anxiety are considered a normal factor of life that can drive growth and motivational change, prolonged stress and anxiety that goes unmanaged can negatively impact one’s health and sense of well-being. Furthermore, untreated children with anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss important social experiences, engage in substance abuse, experience intense thoughts of fear and nervousness, and at worse engage in self-harm. Reasons for Increased Anxiety Childhood and teenage pressures are high when it comes to home-school-friend-life balance. These include parental pressures (such as: moving to a new location, losing a parent or grandparent, experiencing parental divorce or separation, building parent-child relationships, witnessing abusive parental relationships, establishing family roles, abiding family rules), peer pressures (such as: building friendships, overcoming bullying, achieving popularity, growing a self-image, social groupings, and social media), school pressures (such as: starting school, achieving good grades, graduating), societal pressures (such as: terrorism/racism, media fears, social media pressures, perceived threats, social groups, gender conformity). While the cause of anxiety stems from increased pressures as mentioned above, factors including a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological, developmental factors, over-scheduled children, poor sleep, and improper nutrition all play key roles. 26

Natural Ways to Improve Anxiety States 1. Diet: There is a direct relationship between nutrition and brain function. As our food today is more processed and deplete of nutrients, it is important that steps are put in place to enable your child to receive vital nutrients to build their immune and nervous system. Good food builds good mood is the motto! • Eat Organic Fresh Living Foods. To provide the maximum amount of natural nutrition, eat whole organic fresh fruit and vegetables. Living vitamins and minerals and plant compounds provide active ingredients to one’s living body. • Increase Protein and Healthy Fats. Seek out grass-fed meat from animals and poultry that have been fed on hormonefree organic foods. Increase wild-caught fish that’s high in omega 3 fatty acids and low in mercury. Extra protein can also be obtained by eating eggs, legumes, beans, nuts and seeds. • Reduce Sugar Intake. Highly refined or processed sugar is simply glucose, and can stimulate the brain and rapidly crash in energy soon after. It’s not sustainable energy and can create symptoms of ADD/ADHD, brain fog, fatigue, and irritability. Replace processed sugary foods with complex carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables. Try healthy snacks such as carrot, jicama, cucumber, bell pepper and celery sticks. • Increase Water. Water is one of the most essential ingredients for a healthy mind and body. Our bodies are composed more of water than actual proteins. Encourage your child to drink half of their body weight in fluid ounces. Drink infused fruit water or dilute fruit juice to only one-third juice and rest as filtered water. • Check for Allergies. The most common allergies and food sensitivities are gluten, dairy, sugar and yeast. Food sensitivities are essentially altered immune signals that trigger a scattered and unfocused mind, asthma, hay fever, skin reactions, or digestive issues. 2. Avoid and Reduce Toxic Chemicals: Chemicals in food, environment, and household products contribute to weakening your child’s immune, endocrine, and nervous systems. In particular, plastics, pesticides, and heavy metals have been shown to alter immune function (e.g.: allergies, food intolerance), disrupt hormonal signaling (e.g.: obesity, early menses), and arrest nerve growth (cognitive delay, ADD/ADHD), respectively. Therefore, it is best to limit chemical exposure when possible, and replace toxic products with chemical-free alternatives.

3. Exercise: When you exercise, your body can also exercise your mind. Body movement transforms persistent thoughts and encourages awareness of feelings of strength and endurance. Children require a lot of exercise and play time. Encourage your child to engage in sports, outdoor activities, sweating, and muscle strengthening. A strong body can easily influence a strong mind and improved self-image. 4. Effective Parenting: Children can easily become anxious and stressed by their surrounding environment. When parents and teachers are anxious, the children often absorb these emotions, resulting in altered behavior, moodiness, or restlessness. When adults are peaceful, children are likely to become peaceful too. • Self Esteem. Your child’s self esteem is one of the most important factors that affects their mind and body image. When a child feels good about themselves, they tend to socialize easily, appreciate their body, and do well in learning. Self-esteem and confidence are built from within. Parents, remember to give love to yourself- your child is watching your every mood, smile, and comment. • Teach Responsibility. Give your child small tasks from an early age so they learn how to take responsibility for themselves and for others. • Breathing. The body and brain rely on oxygen to operate efficiently, and it is important that children get enough oxygen into their body through regular, rhythmic breathing. Elevated anxiety levels can induce panic attacks that stem from shallow breathing, constricted vessels and poor oxygen supply to the brain. Teach mindful meditation and breath work to calm down the anxious mind and body.

• Ability to Change. Encourage children to be flexible in their body and mind. There are many ways to achieve successful outcomes. Encourage your child to find their own unique way. They need to know there are different ways to handle the same situation. • Explore a New Environment. If an environment is making your child anxious, then remove them from what’s not working. Expose them to new environments where they feel empowered and can express themselves and build relationships and confidence with likeminded individuals.

homeopathy, and aromatherapy are all beneficial natural interventions for treating your child’s anxiety and mood disorders. She is an in-network provider with most major health insurance companies and is accepting new patients. Please call 860-533-0179 for an appointment. See ad on page 23.

• Boundaries. Children thrive on positive guidelines. While some may rebel for a short time, they often learn and respect the boundaries from an early setting. Be consistent to avoid confusion and mixed messages. • Use Positive Words. Words play a huge impact on how your child reacts to situations and how they feel about themselves. Negative words or phrases can be anxiety triggers for children. Avoid words such as, ‘never or always,’ ‘if only,’ ‘difficult,’ ‘can’t,’ or ‘impossible.’ Avoid judgment words such as ‘good vs bad,’ ‘right vs wrong,’ and replace them with words such as ‘appropriate.’ Remember to listen first, and then offer non-judgmental advice or constructive discipline. While the conventional first-line treatment for most anxiety disorders includes medication and cognitive behavioral therapy, complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) offers unique strategies that address underlying factors and begin to correct imbalance from child to adulthood. Reduce Your Risk of Developing Alzheimer's By James Osborne, MS & Ann Aresco, ND

M

y interest in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s stems from my personal experience of caring for my parents over an eight-year period. My father died in two and a half years with frontal temporal lobe dementia with aphasia. My mother who died in May, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Both lived and died in the family home. I learned a great deal over the years about the devastation dementia and Alzheimer’s has on individuals, relationships, family members and caregivers. Please note there are differences between the diagnosis of dementia and Alzheimer’s. The effects on the family and caregivers appear to be the same. I also questioned myself, is this the life I have to look forward to? My experience with the drugs used to slow the decline of progression was not good. The drugs quickly lost their efficacy and cognitive decline appeared to rapidly increase. My hopes of stabilization soon disappeared. I had to face the fact that the person I had known all my life was no longer present. I felt hopeless and ineffective. Dr. Ann Aresco and I began to discuss what preventive measures individuals can take to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and how to support those most affected by the condition. Dr. Aresco: Keeping the body’s defenses from trying to cover the brain cells with amyloid plaques. The human body is amazing. Sometimes however the defensive reactions turn out to cause bigger problems. The research on amyloid plaques previously seen as the procrastinator in Alzheimer’s now shows it is a protector. It is a defense mechanism that is attempting to save the brain cells from destruction but ends up blocking the signals between the cells. These signals once cut off cause the symptoms of cognitive decline. I’m sure you realize this is a very simple explanation of the effect it has on the brain. It has taken many doctors and many scientists studying for many years to identify what is going on that causes Alzheimer’s. In the end, preventing the brain cells from trying to protect themselves is how to prevent Alzheimer’s.

So how do you prevent a defense? You take away the trigger to the defense. Those triggers can be many - inflammation being the most important to prevent. This may come from toxins, foods like sugar, poor nutrition, hormone abnormalities, viruses and many attacks to the body that lead to so many imbalances. We see this over and over again. As an example: hyperlipidemia or high cholesterol. Having excess cholesterol isn’t the real problem that causes artery walls to thicken; the real problem is caused by inflammation in the arteries. The cholesterol is used to protect the artery from the inflammation collecting in that area. Eventually it becomes too thick and creates the health issues. Prevention therefore isn’t lowering cholesterol, it is lowering inflammation. This is the case with Alzheimer’s as well. Stop the bodies’ defense mechanism from responding to inflammation. James Osborne: Alzheimer’s is reported to cause 50 – 80% of all dementia cases according to Dr. Raj Shah of the Rush Memory Clinic in Chicago. There can be many causes of memory loss including B12 deficiency, thyroid, kidney, brain or liver disorders. Memory loss and confusion are not a normal part of aging. People presenting with confusion, short term memory loss, agitation, mood swings and impaired judgement may be showing the first signs of Alzheimer’s. One incident or sign is not diagnostic. There could be many other reasons these present themselves. It is when the signs increase in frequency and severity that we begin to be concerned, especially when our loved one has difficulty with familiar tasks, planning or problem-solving, misplacing or hiding things, confusion with time and place, difficulty communicating or repetitive speech or actions, wandering, withdrawal, inability to recognize family and friends, problems with motor skills, difficulty dressing, decline in self care and hygiene, delusions, paranoia, aggression, trouble sleeping and regressed behaviors. Unfortunately, as the symptoms increase the toll on caregivers and family increases. At this stage the main focus for the afflicted individual is providing a safe environment. The focus for the caregiver and family members is education and personal support. Dr. Aresco:

Alzheimer’s testing: It appears that the only research advantages accomplished in Alzheimer’s may be in the testing. For years the only way to diagnose Alzheimer’s was autopsy. Now that inflammation and toxins like heavy metals as well as missing nutrients from diet or poor digestion have been determined to be detrimental, testing has become key to preventing the onset and advancement of disease. Testing helps identify what needs to be addressed before the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.

Natural Nutmeg - September 2018

Much the same as so many other conditions, testing helps to identify the possible cause of Alzheimer’s and therefore the prevention steps needed to treat the individual. If the genetic markers are found before the symptoms begin, it’s best to begin a prevention program right away. If the symptoms are already present – stopping the progress and possible reversal of the disease is the only option. There are no effective pharmaceuticals to stop and reverse Alzheimer’s. This is interesting to think about from a testing and prevention perspective, as some testing is to identify toxins that may be driving the condition into a worsening state. You have to wonder if the pharmaceuticals wouldn’t be more of a problem than a solution. Testing – looking for the target while treating the condition. One of the best things about prevention is you can start treating the patient before you know what you are treating. In the medical world if there is no diagnosis it is difficult to determine the treatment. In the world of preventative medicine, it is the first step no matter what. What is the patient eating? Are sleep and elimination working properly? Are there signs that nutrients are not optimal? Are there signs that nutrients are being self prescribed and over dosed? When a patient comes into the exam room with a grocery bag of supplements and drugs, you know that they have been trying to alleviate symp-

toms any way they can. That doesn’t usually work in their favor. Taking a whole bunch of supplements when the digestion itself is the problem is a lot of wasted money and time. James Osborne: The treatment protocol for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients begins with prevention. Once the disease or condition sets in, the task of treating the condition becomes much more difficult. Learning new activities such as dancing, creating art, reading, word and number games, learning a language or how to play a musical instrument have been shown to keep the brain active and assist in the development of new neural pathways. Physical activities such as walking, swimming, dancing and doing weight training exercises are essential in combating stress, anxiety and depression, and maintaining brain health. Eating a brain healthy diet, intermittent fasting and taking appropriate supplements are critical. Dr. Dale E. Bresdesen in his book “The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline” provides several cases studies on the reversal of symptoms using these methods. Nine of the first ten patients paced on the protocol displayed significant improvement within three to six months. Subsequent studies have yielded similar results. Several of his patients appeared with him on Dr. Oz’s television program to attest to the changes they have

experienced – including being able to recognize people (facial blindness), improved reading comprehension and recall, improvement in vocabulary and word retrieval, clarity of thought and thinking speed, improved sleep, driving skills and less fatigue. Dr. Aresco: Alzheimer's diet: The individual’s treatments will begin with the diet that the patient needs, anti-inflammatory to say the least. Added to that, foods need to be providing the nutrients to help the body do what it needs to stop the progression of the disease. Getting the patient digesting properly is the first line of treatment. Eating all whole foods and not digesting them can still lead to malnourishment. Are the nutrients the patient has enough? Is there a need to treat for toxins and making sure that more toxins aren’t entering the body to keep the Alzheimer’s progressing? As is true in most diseases, what that patient is consuming is going to be a key factor. Can the patient do it? Or is the family that surrounds them capable of making changes? The education about treating Alzheimer’s can be equal to the education on preventing Alzheimer’s. It is therefore a valuable education for the family on how to face one’s own future health with less stress knowing that what is keeping your loved one healthy is going to do the same for those looking to prevent any onset of the disease.

Natural Nutmeg - September 2018

My experience with Alzheimer’s was limited. Before my family moved to Arizona so that I could go to medical school, my mother in law Josie was beginning to show the signs of her cognitive decline. It was considered senior moments at that time but I was certain it was more than that. When I saw her gazing at her oldest grandson as if he was a total stranger I knew something was wrong. He didn’t miss it either. “Gram, it’s me, Carl.” She laughed and said I know it’s you! I could tell a moment earlier she had no idea who that young man in front of her was. We moved to Arizona and her decline was shared in conversations with family. She was such a sweet little lady and it was sad to hear that she was fading away. One visit home, we went to see her in the nursing home and she lit up when we came in to visit. She introduced her son Jim (it was actually George) to her friends and simply referred to me as “you.” “Oh, how good to see you!” “So happy you have come to visit me.” In a way I’m glad that I only remember her as happy funny Josie and not her declining years into the world of not knowing where she was or who anyone was. James Osborne: Caretaker View: The role of being a caregiver to someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia can be emotionally and physically draining. Caregiving is an act of compassion, love and understanding. In the case of caregiving someone with Alzheimer’s, it can be especially difficult to remain compassionate and patient. We must remember that the loved one has a condition outside of their control. They are not being mean or difficult. When they repeat themselves or ask the same question for the17th time in the last 10 minutes, it is because they have limitations. We as caregivers must understand that they live only in this moment and we must deal with each moment as if it is the first time we have been presented with their concern. We are tasked with helping them have order and understanding of their daily routines. We should speak slowly, calmly, treat them with respect, speak simply with short direct sentences. We should keep the environment calm, quiet and consistent. Changes to the physical environment can be extremely disorienting, scary and/or threatening. Rely on routine. Instead of focusing on what they cannot accomplish, find ways to help them be successful in performing daily and personal tasks. Assist them in making simple decisions (either this or that), rather than facing complex or involved decisions. It is important caregivers have their own supports; such as a therapist, family members, close friends, spiritual supports or a support group. Developing a mindfulness practice of meditation, prayer or gratitude journaling may prove helpful, along with developing a sense of humor or at least a sense of the absurd. Finding respite supports are critical. Caregivers do not have to work in isolation or handle the burdens of care all by themselves 24/7. Caregivers also benefit from healthy diets, exercise and rest – and a good nights sleep. Prevention is still the best medicine for the caregiver as well. In the first visit with any patient, all doctors ask the same question. What is your family medical history? This is a survey question to determine what the patient might be facing in their own future health. Prevention before the onset of disease is the key to self health care. Compassionate Healing Modalities for Children By Joyce St. Germaine, M.Ed., CHt., RYT-200

C

hildren…we all love those adorable, energetic, creative, sweet, loving, delightful, expressive little beings! But children don’t always exhibit these traits. Then, they look to adults to help restore them to their precious little selves. As humans, we are programmed to be fiercely protective of our young, as is true with much of the animal kingdom. It is how we survive as a species. It is necessary, and that instinct cannot or will not change if we are to exist. This phenomenon is not true merely for individual families. It holds true for humankind. Recent events present a powerful example. Remember how you felt when you heard about the migrant parents and children forcibly separated at the US/ Mexico border? Whether you are a parent or not, you likely felt stunned, defensive, angry, aggressive or driven to act. You may have noticed some children around you were exhibiting sadness or grief. Here is why. We are programmed to share the same experiences to remind us that we are all connected…what happens to one, happens to all. Compassion is based on the belief that we are honoring the oneness of everyone and everything…the “all that is”. We are told that we should be sympathetic or empathetic toward others. I suggest that empathy or sympathy are only stepping-stones to compassion. We must transform the energies of sympathy and empathy into compassion. Compassion dictates that when one suffers, all suffer because of this energetic connection. Scientists are beginning to discover what shamans have always known. There is a biological component to compassion; it serves a deep, evolutionary purpose. Compassion asks us to alleviate the suffering of others. We may begin by first offering energy in the form of a loving thought to those who are suffering. We proceed by contributing time, resources or skills, using our voices or intellect, or by reaching out to inspire or partner with others. Children are affected, consciously or unconsciously, by the suffering of others. They have had less time than adults to reprogram their thoughts to create an illusion of separateness. Thus, adults should be

vigilant in observing symptoms of concern in children during tumultuous times. My experience with children is not that of a parent, but rather that of a shamanic practitioner and spiritual counselor combined with 37 years as a public-school art educator, 25 years as a hypnotherapist (children/adults) and facilitator of children’s circles. As society has changed from decade to decade, I have observed children’s needs change. As our world is changing, children are being born more aware, more connected, more sensitive. Children who are hyper-sensitive to what is happening around them may exhibit troubling behaviors or thoughts. Many children find relief through art, music or dance activities, imaginative play or by connecting with animals and nature. There are children who need more direction. In these cases, I will partner with a pediatrician or child psychologist to help shift problematic behaviors that a child is presenting. Issues may include fears or phobias, bed-wetting, sleep difficulties, eating disorders, aggressive behavior or other social or educational concerns. In some situations, hypnotherapy is appropriate; the exact technique differs by age or developmental level. When working with young children, I first gather information from responsible adults. I then create a script to use with hypnosis via storytelling or puppetry. This is extremely effective because that story bears a striking similarity to the child’s situation and is told with a positive, desired ending. While the child is engaged in the story (with or without puppets), the story becomes that child’s new reality because he/she is engaged at the subconscious level. The session is fun and animated, with the child deeply engaged. Older children are also open to age appropriate stories and most teens will re1414 spond to the same techniques as adults. Past Life Regression Therapy is warranted when

a child describes disturbing experiences when they were in a “different body”. Only with the support of the medical or mental health professionals do I consider Past Life Regression Therapy. Cases of children’s past life experiences have been documented in the American Journal of Medicine. For the child who exists in wonder of the natural world, shamanic practices are fitting. Stones and crystals can be used, especially by the child who intuitively knows which earth medicines they require. They will reach for them on their own when invited to enjoy my gemstone collection. Vibrational sound energy healing is another effective healing modality. Drums, rattles, gongs and other such instruments work well to release blocked energy pathways and to restore a healthy energetic flow. I encourage the child to lead or participate in the process whenever possible. “Natural shamans”, children innately understand energy and they will enthusiastically explore things that cannot be seen nor measured by conventional methods. When guided with compassion, they will happily reclaim their adorable, energetic, creative, sweet, loving, delightful, expressive little selves! Joyce St. Germaine, M. 3 College Funding Tips For The New School Year By Caroline Wetzel

A

re you a parent experiencing a mix of emotions as a new school year begins? Is part of you relieved to have the kids resuming their routine, even if it’s chaotic? Is another part of you anxious, aware that it is just a matter of time until your student will need to make decisions around whether to go to college and how to fund it? Following are three steps for initiating the college funding conversation and planning process.

acquire the requisite training to deliver in that job. If she doesn’t know what she wants to become professionally, it may make sense for her to take a few classes at the local community college while working part time to determine what she enjoys and is good at, before investing all of her time, energy, and significant finances into a multi-year college experience. The key to this step is to develop a clearly defined education goal that will set up your student for success realizing her professional dream.

Step 1: Set a goal. Everyone has different education needs. Some people have skills that are best suited for specific trades or vocations. Other individuals require completion of specific two-year education training to be qualified to do what they want professionally. And still other students aspire to having a four-year college experience. There is no one-size-fits-all education strategy for every type of student need.

Step 2: Know your numbers. After confirming your student’s education goal based on her needs, have a candid conversation about the finances necessary to fund her education goal. Colleges generally expect students and their families to help pay for education costs to the extent that they are able to afford doing so.

Ask your student what she wants to do to earn money to pay for her bills after graduation. If she is certain about what she wants to do, her education goal is clear: to

1. What is the sticker price published by the institution offering the education your student needs?

Essential numbers to discuss at this stage include:

Sticker price is the published price for education and related services delivered through college. Broad categories of services that offer sticker prices include tuition and fees. 2. What financial aid and tax benefits might be available? There are four main sources of financial aid: federal government, state government, colleges and universities, and private organizations. Various factors are considered when assessing whether aid will be made available, from the total cost of attendance to the Expected Family Contribution (EFC: how much the federal government believes a family should be able to pay for college out of pocket), to whether the aid is meritbased or need-based, the year in school, enrollment status, among other points. Even if you don’t think you will qualify to receive aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The federal and many state governments, as well as many colleges and universities, use the content you provide in this application to assess whether you are eligible to receive grants and scholarships (which you don’t have to repay), workstudy job opportunities, and loans (which you do have to repay). Additionally, there are a variety of tax-efficient ways to fund college, from taxdeferred savings accounts to tax credits and tax deductions. In light of the recent tax legislation changes, it’s best to refer to the IRS website and your accountant to clarify which tax solutions are most suitable for you. 3. What is the net price to the family? Net price is the difference between the sticker price published by the college and the financial aid and tax benefits uniquely

32

available to your family and student. This is the real amount of money that a family typically pays for college. The sticker price may differ significantly from net prices. According to the College Board, in 2015-16, the average sticker price of in-state tuition and fees for public four-year colleges was about $9,410, but the average net price was about $3,980. Who can help pay for the costs? How much money can they contribute, and when? Step 3: Create – and stick to – a plan. With your student’s goal as your focus, and your numbers as your guides, set a timeline for identifying the right institutions for your student’s needs and agree to a budget that you will keep to make your student’s education dreams a reality. Recognize that the final decision for where your student will obtain her education must be one that satisfies her head, her heart, and the wallets of all individuals financially contributing to her success. You and your student are not alone in this process. The Federal Student Aid website, your local Certified Financial PlannerTM, and Financial Aid officers for the institution your student wants to attend are just some of the many resources available to assist you.

Healthy Aging Primer, Part 1:How to Increase Health Span & Longevity By J. Erika Dworkin, Certified Lifestyle Educator [A] virtual landslide of data has continually emphasized the Western diet as the key factor in virtually every chronic disease... During the 20th century, food consumption patterns changed dramatically. ...The largest change was the switch from a diet with a high level of complex carbohydrates, which naturally occur in grains and vegetables, to a ...dramatic increase in the number of calories consumed from simple sugars. ...High consumption of refined sugars is linked to many chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. ~ Michael T. Murray, ND & Joseph Pizzorno, ND – The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (Third Edition 2012)

A

re you over 40 and starting to think about your golden years and mortality? Are you somewhat confused by the massive amount of sometimes conflicting advice available about exactly what constitutes a healthy lifestyle, which foods to avoid or eat, and which supplements are most critical? While healthy aging is an enormous topic, the information below and in Part 2 of this article serves as a primer to help you start moving in the right direction. Some Scientific Theories Behind Aging Scientists offer various theories to explain aging. So-called programmed theories derive from the idea that a genetic clock determines when old age will set in. Equally valid damage theories are based on the concept that aging results from cumulative damage to cells and genes (DNA). Both types of aging processes lead to the development of various degenerative diseases, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and immune deficiency/dysfunction. These theories include:

1. Telomere Theory: Scientists view these end-cap segments of chromosomes (DNA molecules with part or all of the genetic material of an organism), as aging clocks. Each time a cell replicates, the telomere shortens, thereby affecting gene expression and causing cellular aging and degenerative disease. The key to increasing health and life span depends on preserving or restoring telomere length. 2. Free Radical Theory: Free radicals are unstable molecules that can bind to and damage cells. Sources of free radicals include essential metabolic bodily processes, the environment (x-rays, radiation, cigarette smoke, certain drugs, air/water pollution, industrial chemicals), and unhealthy food. Free radicals primarily target fats, proteins, and DNA. Their overwhelming the body's ability to regulate them thus results in oxidative stress, which can trigger various age-related diseases. Cumulative free radical damage is also viewed as a key cause of the shortening of telomeres. 3. Glycosylation Theory: Proteins do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure, function, and regulation of all tissues and organs. Glycosylation, the attachment of glucose to cellular proteins that prevents those proteins from functioning properly, results in advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs inactivate enzymes critical to many metabolic processes, impair immune function, and increase risk of autoimmune disease. Diets that promote glycosylation (high in heat-processed, high-fat, animal-derived foods) and poor glucose control are linked to telomere shortening.

Healthy Habits More than anything, healthy aging depends on maintenance of health-promoting habits on a day-to-day basis. In addition to avoiding smoking, second-hand smoke, and illicit drugs, incorporating these habits into daily life can go a long way to ensuring longer health and life spans: Detoxing/Fasting: Regularly clearing harmful toxins, especially through enhanced liver and kidney function, directly supports the body’s normal metabolic functions. Some of the thousands of toxic chemicals found in the body that can cause poor health/disease (chronic headaches, inflammation, liver disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, thyroiditis, allergies, psoriasis and other

autoimmune conditions) include: 1. toxic metals: aluminum, mercury, arsenic, lead 2. persistent organic pollutants (POPs): drugs, alcohol, solvents, food dyes/additives, pesticides, formaldehyde 3. microbes produced by yeast and bacteria in the gut; and 4. ammonia and urea produced from the breakdown of protein. Diet Modification: Though nutrition experts do not all agree on what constitutes an ideal diet, these guidelines are a good place to start: 1. avoid/greatly minimize inflammation-inducing hydrogenated, trans, and animal-based saturated fats (beef, pork, lamb, duck), gluten, dairy, GMOs, caffeine, MSG, processed foods, the toxins noted above, and especially sugar/simple carbohydrates. 2. barring allergies/food sensitivities or a health condition that calls for a different approach, include high-omega3 wild fish, organic chicken/turkey/eggs, protein powder to supplement inadequate protein intake, whole organic grains, and as many organic colorful raw foods as possible. The ideal dietary regimen also minimizes salt intake, maintains high potassium intake, and includes ample amounts of high-pH, non-tap water. Environmental Clean-Up: We ingest what we breathe, and much of what we place on our skin can enter our blood stream and organs through our epidermis, hair follicles, or glands. While health risks vary based on multiple factors, including extent of chemical exposure, age, immune/health status, and genes, it is ideal to avoid these toxins commonly found in mainstream products (see EWG.org): 1. Household Cleaners: chlorine bleach; ammonia; hydrochloric/phosphoric acid; sodium/potassium hydroxide; ethanolamines; synthetic fragrance; and quaternary ammonium compounds 2. Body Care Products: aluminum; sodium lauryl/laureth

sulfate (SLSs); BHA/BHT; triclosan/triclocarban; coal tar dyes; parabens; polyethylene/ PEGs; phthalates; diethanolamine (DEA); synthetic fragrance; petrolatum/petroleum distillates; and siloxanes. Instead, many online resources provide innovative, simple DIY formulas for every type of cleaning project, and numerous ready-made cleaners and reliable skin care/cosmetic products are readily available in local health food stores. Exercise/Maintaining Muscle Mass: Ample scientific evidence supports regular exercise as being critical to good health. While exercise does initially stress the body, its long-term positive effects include: 1. greater muscle strength/flexibility 2. enhanced transport of oxygen and nutrients into, and waste out of, cells, 3. greater body function, efficiency and energy 4. improved mood, and (5) enhanced fat metabolism. When exercising, aim to lose fat, but also gain muscle. Muscle weighs more, but the body burns more calories to maintain a pound of muscle than it does to maintain a pound of fat. Loss of 1-2 pounds/week, or no more than 1% of total body weight, is a safe, sustainable, long-term goal. Although not for everyone, some fitness experts consider interval or burst training (20-40 minutes, 3-4 days per week) to be the best way to burn fat quickly and promote after-exercise fat burning for up to 36 extra hours. The key is to start and keep moving on a regular basis for a total of 40-60 minutes, ideally daily or no fewer than five days per week, Selecting something tolerable with relatively easy access is important to long-term compliance with any exercise regimen. Healthy Weight Maintenance: Scientific studies have proven overweight/obesity to be a significant threat to all body systems and a cause of early death. The health conditions associated with overweight/obe-

sity include cancer, cardiovascular disease/ hypertension, diabetes, joint pain and other inflammatory conditions, respiratory ailments, skin conditions, and reproductive difficulties (PCOS, fertility). Sleep Management: Sleep influences the function of the immune, hormonal, and nervous systems. A growing number of studies have thus linked inadequate sleep, or even sleeping at odd hours, with increased risk of obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure/heart disease, and cancer. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to neuronal damage and accelerated brain aging, emotional and psychological problems, hypothyroidism, and increased hospitalizations and mortality.

Stress Management: Since all types of stress negatively impact every cell, tissue, and organ, managing the body’s stress response on a daily basis is important to conserving its resources. Any of these daily practices can greatly facilitate chronic/ acute stress management: consciousness management techniques; exercise (see above); prayer; meditation; deep diaphragmatic breathing; tai chi; development/use of time management, communication, and relationship skills; and elimination of toxins (including toxic relationships) (see above). Lifestyle modification is a critical first step to promoting full-body health and longevity, but there is so much more to this story. Monetize Your Mission By Robin Clare, MBA he psychologist Carl Jung believed that universal, mythic characters—archetypes—reside within everyone’s unconscious the world over. As humans evolved over time, these archetypes have come to represent common emotional patterns displayed by all people. Well-known examples of Jung’s archetypes within our psyche include the Victim, the Hero and the Caregiver. In the Noble Warrior program by Lorna Johnson, we discover a variety of archetypal patterns which arise in our professional lives and have a direct impact on our success.

T

Two archetypal patterns from the Noble Warrior program are called the Saboteur and the Magician. The Saboteur represents our super brilliant logical mind and the Magician represents our Soul’s inner voice or intuition. Either can stop you in your tracks if you don’t understand the importance of both when monetizing your mission. At the same time, your Magician (or your soul’s voice) is talking to you – in fact, it’s talking to you every moment of every day. You can recognize it as the small voice that you hear at first only when you are quiet. As you learn to trust your intuition and begin to experience moments of living by its guidance, that inner voice becomes louder and finally, with focus and practice it becomes the faithful and reliable Guide to whom you listen. But ask yourself: “What typically stops me from listening to my Magician to create my most exciting life?” The answer is easy... of course, it’s your Saboteur. You begin to realize that your Saboteur has been running the show with your tacit, unknowing approval – keeping you afraid, stressed out and holding you back from trusting your gut instincts.

Up to now, your logical (fear-based) mind has run your outer world and your intuition (soul-based) has run your inner world. It is time now for you to allow your intuition to run both your outer and inner worlds. Let your Magician run your life for the moment and give your Saboteur a muchneeded vacation. But perhaps you may be thinking: “But what about my mind’s brilliance?“ Well, what if during this hiatus you happen to discover that your Soul’s brilliance is your true genius? It is your Soul’s genius that is connected to the unlimited brilliance of the Universe! By its very definition the Universe is unlimited, which in turn makes you open to unlimited success. Unfortunately, you cannot get to your most expanded self when you are locked in to the restrictive nature of your logical mind. Want to break out of the logical rut you’re in and let your intuition shine through? Then go inside to make all of your decisions and find your profound creative nature. Your Soul will give you suggestions that make beautiful sense and sometimes absolutely no logical sense. Do them anyway. All of your Soul’s guidance has led you to this exact moment in time to fulfill your mission here on Earth. Once you are willing to connect more deeply to your intuition, you will receive both profound – and practical - guidance from your Soul.

BERNIE

By Bernie Siegel, MD

Living with Humor

L

ife is difficult but it can become intolerable when the child in you dies. When that child dies so does your sense of humor and your ability to laugh at life. I know from experience how easy it is to focus on what is troubling you versus what heals and sustains you. We must be willing to make the effort to see through the darkness and find the light. As Helen Keller said, “If you face the sunshine you do not see the shadows.” Many years ago when I was in pain trying to deal with the many emotional aspects of being a physician that we are not trained to handle, I began to write about my painful experiences every night before going to bed. It was before I knew this was therapeutic. It was just something I felt compelled to do to help me deal with the events of the day and not just bury them within me. I kept it hidden from the family because it was not a pleasant thing for anyone to read. One night when I was very tired I forgot to hide it and my wife Bobbie, found it. The next morning she said, “There’s nothing funny in your journal.” “My life isn’t funny,” I said. “You have us laughing at dinner every night.” Then she went on to tell me stories I had told her and the children that had me laughing but that never got into my journal. From then on, I made notes not just about the painful events in my life but also about the humorous and healing events. In this way, what is stored within is not just the pain but the joyful events too. When people ask, “How do you deal with stress?” I answer, “Drugs and alcohol.” Most people know I’m kidding. The truth is I learned to handle stress by not leaving anything unfinished. The other day before leaving home I finished the Kahlua, red and white wine, valium and Prozac. I can tell you I haven’t felt so great in a long time. I have embarrassed our five children for years and it has saved me a lot of money. When we dined out and the waiter asked, “How’s everything?” I would answer, “Why are you upsetting me in the middle of dinner. If you read the papers you would know what a mess the world is. So please let me eat in peace.” At an Italian restaurant, I would order Chinese food to confuse the waitress who was never quite sure if I was kidding. The last time I went to pick up a pizza, they had three containers of Chinese food waiting for me on the counter. And the whole place had a good laugh. We all became kids again. The other day I called our oldest son, Jonathan at his office. He is an attorney. I told his secretary I was an FBI agent who had to discuss an investigation with Jon. She interrupted his meeting to insist he answer the phone. He said, “It’s my father.” The secretary

42

Natural Nutmeg - September 2018

argued with him that it was an FBI agent. He said, “Okay, hand me the phone.” He then said, “Yes Dad, what is it?” His secretary now knows better. The ultimate benefit of all this I observed at my father’s death. If I asked you what would you have your family talk about when you were ready to die so you could die laughing, what would you answer? The right answer is for them to tell stories about you and hopefully you will give them enough material so you can die laughing as my father did. The first story my mother told ended with the fact that my dad lost a coin toss and therefore, had to take her out. From then on things got worse and I have no idea why my mom kept dating him but those events let him go looking joyful and free of fear. It was a gift to everyone in the room. When you laugh you lose an awareness of the physical aspects of life and transcend your troubles. Here is a list of exercises to help live life with humor! 1. Keep a journal of whatever makes you smile for the next week, from emails to events. Reread it every evening at bedtime. 2. Act like a child today and perform or ask questions just like a preschooler would. 3. Embarrass someone you know today by your actions. 4. Dress like a clown today and act as if you do not notice anyone’s reaction. 5. It’s never too early to prepare to die laughing. Start accumulating material and giving your family things to talk about that will make you laugh. Start asking them to share memories now. For many, Dr. Bernard Siegel-or Bernie, as he prefers to be called-needs no introduction. He has touched many lives all over the Planet. In 1978, he reached a national and then international audience when he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. Read Bernie’s regular blog posts on his website where you will also find his books, articles, and CDs: http://www.berniesiegelmd.com. He is the Co-Academic Director of the Integrative Health and Healing M.A. Program at The Graduate Institute, Bethany, CT Bernie currently holds a cancer support group the second and fourth Tuesday afternoons of the month 1:30-3:30PM at Coachman’s Square at 21 Bradley Road, Woodbridge.
