PUBLISHER'SLETTER

all is here and our annual reader-nominated 10Best Awards are back! I love these awards because they bring massive awareness throughout Connecticut for Holistic Businesses & Practitioners and we receive amazing feedback from the winners and readers. Many business owners in categories like Natural Product Companies, Spas, and Farm-to-Table restaurants said they just discovered the magazine and didn’t realize their customers were avid readers and fans. Because of this we were able to increase our advertiser demographic and distribution and holistic business owners increased their exposure! This year, our 3rd annual 10BEST awards are happening through September 15th. As a Natural Nutmeg reader, you have the opportunity to nominate your favorite holistic practitioner or business in 20 categories listed on the inside back cover.

Go to https://tinyurl.com/NN10Best2019 to place your nominations by midnight September 15th! Please take the time to make these nominations! These awards are a fantastic way for business owners to increase their market share and expand their business. Most businesses experience 37% more growth after winning a local award. Our Connecticut holistic practitioners are extremely passionate about helping their local communities and they need you to help them bring more awareness to all of the amazing natural and ecofriendly choices we have in this great state. We are proud to be the first reader nominated awards exclusively for the holistic business community in Connecticut. Winners will be announced in late September via eblasts and social media – so if you want to be the first to hear, please go to www.naturalnutmeg.com and sign up for our monthly eblasts and Like us on FB and Instagram. We will be showcasing the 10BEST in each category in a special additional issue released in December 2019. This issue will also include articles, ads, business profiles and a holistic practitioner directory that you can keep and use for all of 2020. September is Chronic Pain Awareness month. Chronic pain is a serious public health issue that needs to be addressed. This issue has many informative and resourceful articles on managing pain with natural therapies. With the huge opioid epidemic in our country, we hope to bring greater awareness to the fact that there are many healthy, natural alternatives to manage and eliminate pain. Please pass this issue along to anyone you know who is struggling with pain and looking for holistic treatments.

Experiencing Hair Loss?

W

hen you step into The Pretty Face Place in South Windsor for a wig consultation, you are immediately greeted by “pretty-faced” mannequins donning beautiful, realistic and stylish synthetic wigs. You are also greeted by a relaxed living-room like setting with throw pillows on a couch, soothing waterfall, relaxing music, coffee/tea service, a fireplace and two comfortable consultation areas. The entire wig buying experience is unique at this South Windsor location. Janice Webber, owner and nurse has reinvented the wig shopping experience. Each client is seen by appointment only in her office to receive one on one personalized attention, wig education, and the opportunity to try on wigs in privacy. “For many of my clients, the retail setting can be overwhelming to them. They are still coming to terms with their diagnosis and hair loss.” Also, for clients who are not physically well, Janice will bring a selection of wigs, and conduct the consultation in their homes. Many clients initially believe that they want a human hair wig, thinking it will look the most natural. However, when shown both a human hair wig and a synthetic wig, it becomes very difficult to tell the difference. A high-quality synthetic wig is incredibly natural looking. Synthetic wigs are lighter weight and easier to care for. They require no styling. You can virtually just shake it, put it on and go. Many women in treatment find that the last thing they want to concern themselves with is spending hours maintaining a human hair wig. Synthetic wigs are also much more affordable. Often, you can own 4 or 5 synthetic wigs for the cost of one human hair wig. Connecticut has mandated that insurance companies provide reimbursement up to $350 for chemo-induced hair loss. Your physician must write an order for a "cranial prosthesis.” Submitted by Janice Webber. For more information call 860.644.0888 or visit theprettyfaceplace.com.

THE BUZZ Emotional Self-Care Retreat at Enders Island on October 5th

W

hat you think is where you live, and you deserve to live in a space of peace, strength, and freedom. We often talk to ourselves in a way that we wouldn’t speak to others. Our words cause stress and anxiety – emotions that aren’t always healthy for us. Our words often come from a place of fear and false beliefs, not authenticity. At BYODestiny, we help you find your authenticity and your best place to be in this world. Emotions drive our thoughts and behavior, but by using emotional intelligence competencies, you have the power and choice to manage what you think, and therefore, where you “live”. Join us for our Emotional Self-Care Retreat at Enders Island, CT on October 5th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm, as we lead you in understanding how to use your emotions as information. You will begin to develop strategies for building positive self-talk and self-acceptance. Learn to care for yourself the way you deserve to be cared for, while enjoying the quiet beauty and tranquility of Enders Island (off Mystic). Recognizing the origin of your thoughts brings about awareness and with awareness comes the power to change. Retreatants will learn what emotions are, how they affect our thoughts, and how to stop the negativity and emotional hijack we all face. The Retreat includes lunch and free parking is located right on the island, just off scenic Mystic, CT. Tickets are $115, two or more are $95 each, and may be purchased here: http://bit.ly/ESCR_1910. Seating is limited, so registration and payment are required in advance. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Paige Dest, Certified Emotional Intelligence Coach, at Paige@BYODestiny.com or by calling 860.550.1844. See ad on page 19.

Free Yourself from Chronic Pain

C

hronic pain starts as physical pain but then cascades into sleep issues, which then increases stress and then potentially leads to depression. Imagine Float, greater Hartford’s first and only wellness center that offers four non-invasive therapies, can help you manage your pain and improve your quality of life. Floatation Therapy consists of 10 inches of water and 1,100 pounds of Epsom salt. You float effortlessly on the surface of 94-degree temperature water. In each cabin, a soft LED light is offered and/ or meditative music. Floating, also known as Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (R.E.S.T.) allows the spine to decompress thereby relieving back, neck and other body aches, tension and pain. The magnesium found in the Epsom salt will also assist in improved sleep patterns, inflammatory relief, a reduction in headaches, stress, depression and anxiety. Whole Body Cryotherapy was developed in 1970 by Dr. Yamauchi in Japan for rheumatoid arthritis. For the past 30 years, people have used cryotherapy for pain management, inflammation, and athletic recovery. In a three-minute session which “lowers the skin temperature, it causes your nervous system to fire, constricts blood vessels, reduces inflammation, and sends blood back to your core for re-oxygenation.” Infrared saunas have proven benefits in treating sports injuries, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis and other chronic conditions. Infrared saunas penetrate joints, muscles and tissues, increase circulation and speed oxygen flow. By reducing soreness on nerve endings, the infrared heat reduces muscle spasms and helps the body heal itself naturally. Compression therapy was developed in 1998 by a Rehabilitation Physician and Ph.D. bioengineer, Dr. Laura F. Jacobs, to promote blood circulation in patients whose circulation was compromised. The dynamic compression rapidly enhances range of motion and reduces muscle spasm and tension. Imagine Float can be found at 290 West Main Street/Route 44 (next to The Perfect Toy) in Avon, CT. For more information, go to imaginefloat.com, or call 860.255.7771. See ad on page 12.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Natural Treatment for Children’s Allergies at Salt of the Earth Therapeutic Spa

A

s much as we long for warmer days, seasonal allergies and air pollutants can be debilitating and especially difficult for children. While using antibiotics to treat allergy symptoms is a common practice, a lot of parents are now looking for a safe and drug-free alternative when treating their little ones. Salt Of The Earth Therapeutic Spa in Woodbury, CT offers a holistic approach to helping kids find the allergy relief they need. It’s all natural, non-invasive and 100% drug free! Salt Therapy (also known as Halotherapy) is a safe way to treat children as young as 6 months old and has proven effective for treating a variety of respiratory, skin and other allergy related issues. One of the biggest contributing factors in allergies and children is that our little ones have smaller lungs and are closer to the ground (where pollutants are highest). When we send them out to play during the day, we’re often sending them out when the highest amounts of unhealthy particulates are found which can prove very taxing on their respiratory system. Our salt rooms have top grade Himalayan Salt Crystals that line the floors and walls. The salt is anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory, it’s an oasis rich with negative ions, providing the ideal micro-climate, free from toxins and pollutants. This kind of therapy has been known to reduce sinus congestion, respiratory inflammation and helps to remove air-born pollen and pollutants, as well as relieve symptoms associated with eczema and psoriasis. Children who experience respiratory symptoms are encouraged to find some relief and have a little fun in our Lagoon Salt Room, the perfect daytime getaway for you and your little one. This whimsical family room provides a safe and comfortable place where children are encouraged to play in the salt with toys and read books that will spark their imagination and inspire creativity, all while receiving treatment. Our Lagoon Room boasts anywhere from 5000 to 12,000 negative ions, a very healthy environment for children and Negative Ion Therapy provides far-reaching benefits for young and old! Our rooms have a state of the art halo generator that helps to relieve irritation without harm to sensitive airways in children. We have one of the most advanced negative ion generators on the market, bringing pure clean air to our salt rooms. We are the only Salt Cave in Connecticut with pure therapeutic-grade air that has been lab tested and certified. We say with total confidence that there are thousands of healthy negative ions to breathe and absorb in each room. Let your little one bask in the goodness of Salt Therapy and find some relief, just breathe! Call Salt Of The Earth Therapeutic Spa today to make an appointment. 203 586.1172. www.naturalsalthealing.com. Lagoon Room Family Rates: One adult and one child under 4 years of age, $25. One child 4 years and older, and one adult $40. One adult and two children, $55. See ad on page 17.

Nutmeg “Nuggets” Mindfully Blooming into Retirement Group Launches in September

R

emember when you were little and all you could think about was, “What am I going to be when I grow up?” Then you grow up and become a full-fledged adult with full-fledged responsibilities both at home and at the workplace. Perhaps you spend your 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s striving to advance in your career. At some point, the questions take a new turn. They shift to, “How the heck am I going to keep this up until I retire?” Retirement then becomes the off-in-the-distance salvation. The thought of no schedule, no alarm clock, no Monday to Friday grind seems heavenly. That is until you are on the doorstep of saying your last goodbyes to the people who work with you. My grandma used to say that the grass was always greener on the other side of the street. I do believe she was right. We have come a long way from the early beginnings of a “one size fits all” retirement. As the massive numbers of baby boomers take the leap into this next phase of their lives, they are extremely fortunate to have a wide-open template of what is possible. For many, not much thought goes into what’s next after the last paycheck. With life span extending 30 more years than in the last century, one’s retirement could account for a third of their lives. This is a huge chunk of time to find meaning and purpose, to explore undeveloped interests, to recreate oneself in ways not even thought about. My colleague, Angela Mazur and I decided to do something about helping folks navigate this major time of transition. We are offering a six-week group entitled, “Mindfully Blooming into Retirement, Embracing Change and Discovering Meaning”. Our goal is to provide a variety of mindful practices that create the safe foundation to begin this new journey of exploration. We help you take stock of what you are letting go of while also discovering/rediscovering what you value. This group experience is like taking a picture. Sometimes we look from a wider angle, other times, a tighter frame is necessary. This portion of life is an opportunity to reclaim good self-care, to re-align to the deeper values that may have laid dormant, and to discover how to create a life of purpose and meaning. An orientation for this new group takes place on Friday, September 20th from 10:30 to 11:45 am at Copper Beech Institute located on Tunxis Road in West Hartford. The group officially begins on 9/27 from 10:30 to 12:30 am. To register, please visit copperbeechinstitute.org. Angela Mazur, LCSW and Theresa Nygren, LCSW have over 30 years experience in the field of Social Work. They are both psychotherapists in private practice in Farmington. Questions for either Angela or Theresa, please contact them at their website: mindfulselfcompassionateway. com. See ad on page 6.

Nourish Yourself Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually

S

hamans know that humans are the only species to walk completely upright. We are considered “walking trees”. As such, we have the unique honor of connecting earth and sky. As we walk on the earth, we are taking in energy from the sky (masculine essence) through the tops of our heads and we are also taking in energy from the earth (feminine essence) through the soles of our feet. These energies meet at our hearts, our centers for love and compassion. Although the sky is considered masculine, legend has it that the moon was placed there to make sure the men wouldn’t fall short on their responsibilities or misuse their knowledge. Women are there to keep a watchful eye on things. Just as women are needed to keep an eye on and be a voice in predominately masculine fields such as politics, law enforcement, science or medicine, so it is in the sky. The moon is an amazing and wonderful thing, having perfect 28-day cycles, just as women do. Long, long ago, before technology and the industrial age, all women had our moons, our menses, at the same time, in exact coordination with the moon. Don’t cringe at the thought of all that PMS at once. There was no PMS because we were all living harmoniously with our universe. We have gotten misaligned by artificial light, artificial foods, artificial bodies, artificial houses and anything else humans thought they could make better by modifying it from its original form. To realign with the moon’s gifts, pay attention to what is happening around you, especially in regard to our environment and food. Choose foods wisely, closest to their natural state. Drink more clean, fresh water to restore your natural chemistry. Joyce St. Germaine, M. Criminals in Skin Care?

A

report from CBS News recently stated: “The TV station's Consumer Justice team first reported on the free trials in March of 2017 investigating how many skin cream sites violated the "negative option" law by hiding the terms and conditions from unsuspecting customers.” Since then, they've heard from hundreds of customers in 30 states and Canada. All of them say they signed up for a free trial and then received deceptive billing on their credit card accounts. Officials with the West Florida BBB alone say they have linked this clever business practice to more than 500 beauty creams. They have received over 4,000 complaints on the various product lines. Frankly, it’s a crime to know hundreds of skin cream companies prey on your hope to look better and younger. You really don’t know what you’re getting. Why fall for these tricks especially when most, if not all, of these creams are chemically infested? Immortal Opulence Skin Cream is based right here in Connecticut. We meticulously hand craft our cream using rare plant extracts from around the world and it is a powerful skin rejuvenator which works at the cellular level. It clearly enhances your natural beauty and youth. We don’t need to trick you to buy our product. Our clients love Immortal Opulence and they tell us constantly it is the best skin cream they have ever used. Immortal Opulence uses over 30 potent wild crafted ingredients, precision formulated and specifically designed to truly be an "all-in-one" solution. Read real testimonials from my respected and cherished clients at www.ImmortalOpulence.com. Submitted by Richard Fanelli, Founder and Formulator of Immortal Opulence. From Imbalance to Order: What is Rolfing®?

e are the accumulation of all the accidents, injuries and traumas that have happened to us throughout our lives. Those stitches and/or broken bones from falling off our bikes as kids, our first car accident as an older teen, that nasty fall while skiing which twisted a knee that has not felt the same even after the surgery a couple of months later all can still be a part of us. Each injury has a repair cycle; the bone heals, the bruising disappears, the stitches fade, the trauma takes a back seat. But then, why do we feel out of balance or develop chronic pain as time goes by? When the body gets injured, the fascia (web-like connective tissue) secretes a gelatinous liquid which at first keeps everything moving. After some time that liquid dries out and begins to act like glue. This glued down fascia adheres to the layers of muscle which, in turn, inhibit the way these muscles naturally move. We then feel this imbalance in the form of chronic pain or feeling “out of whack”. It is so easy to disconnect with ourselves and our bodies. Rolfing® is a way to reconnect and re-educate. Over a series of 10 specific hands-on bodywork sessions, Rolfing® brings us back to neutral, negating the imbalance of the old injuries and restoring flow and ease. Submitted by Sharon Sklar, Certified Advanced Rolfer. For the past 38 years, Sharon Sklar has been the only Rolfer here in Central Connecticut. She has Rolfed countless people with varied injuries, chronic stress or post-operative issues that have resolved as a result of restoring order and balance. Please contact Sharon for more information at www.SharonSklarRolfing.com 860.561.4337. See ad on page 19.

N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease) Plays at Ridgefield Playhouse on September 20th By Diane Hayden, PhD

I

had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Nimesh Nagarsheth, Gynecologic Oncologist and drummer and percussionist of N.E.D., to learn more about this amazing collaboration of doctors turned musicians who are changing the lives of cancer patients and survivors through music therapy. Yes – these talented doctors started a band! I asked Dr. Nagarsheth how they came up with the name. He said, “N.E.D. is what we write on patient charts when they are free of cancer. When thinking about names for the band, this was the band's favorite - having both a positive message and a powerful sound to it.” The concept started at a 2008 annual meeting for women’s cancer in Tampa. Groups of Gynecologic Oncologists specializing in the field of women’s cancer would meet annually to exchange ideas about how to improve the care of patients and learn about new, cutting edge research studies. That particular year, one of the meeting organizers suggested having some down time where attendees could relax and socialize. One of the ideas was to rent musical equipment one night and anyone who wanted to play could get up and jam. “Six of us got the idea to get together the night before and rehearse cover songs. We literally brought down the house and it was a ton of fun,” said Dr. Nagarsheth.“ We thought that would be it, but two days later we got invites to play all around the country at survivor groups, festivals, and charity events. One thing led to another and one invitation came from political leaders from a Washington DC to play at the Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Movement,” he said. Dr. Nagarsheth and his fellow doctor musicians started using music and the band as an opportunity to help a cause. They decided they didn’t want to just play cover songs so they began to write their

own music. They put together six songs and took them to a record label in NYC. Not surprisingly, they got a record deal! Shortly thereafter, the band exploded and had producer Mario McNulty through Moteima Music. They launched their first album in 2009 and two more in 2011 and 2016 and they’ve recorded with Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine. Today, N.E.D. has an official partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Cancer, a 501c3 charity with all proceeds going to charity. They’ve helped raise over $1.5 million for cancer research and prevention. Over the last 11 years, they’ve played all over the country – over 80 shows with 40,000 attendees. They even had a documentary filmed about them, www. nedthemovie.com. Dr. Nagarsheth has written a book on exploring the healing powers of music for cancer patients. Although he resides in Manhattan, he has a strong connection to Connecticut as he grew up in Danbury and still has a lot of family there. All of the band members have a passion for using music to help get the word out about awareness and risk factors for gynecologic cancer in a way that is fun and inspiring. They see it as a voice for patients and survivors. September is gynecologic cancer awareness month and the band will be performing “Below the Belt: A Benefit for Western Connecticut Health Network with N.E.D.” on Friday, September 20th, 8pm at The Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield. Tickets are available at https://ridgefieldplayhouse. org. They are also touring in DC, Philly, and playing in New York City on September 21st. N.E.D. is also looking for sponsorships, product donations and opportunities to play at local clubs, festivals and venues. For more information, visit www.nedtheband.com, www.ridgefieldplayhouse.org. Amp Up the Healing With Electroacupuncture By Matt Maneggia, L.Ac.

I

always chuckle a bit at the look of terror that spreads across my patients’ faces when I first tell them I’d like to hook up some of their needles to electricity. I’m sure images of Dr. Frankenstein flash through their minds with high voltage coursing through their bodies. “Why don’t you give me a lobotomy while you’re at it,” they often joke. While I totally empathize with the initial shock (pun intended), electroacupuncture is actually a very safe, very mild, dare-I-say pleasurable experience that is highly effective. What is Electroacupuncture? Since many people have experience with TENS units, I often start here in my explanation of electroacupuncture. TENS units are those devices where sticky pads are applied to the skin and a small electric current is delivered through the pads. Physical therapists often use these, as well as chiropractors post-adjustment. In this therapy, the small electric current causes subdermal muscle fibers to fire on and off; causing tiny, rapid waves of muscle contraction and relaxation.

What is an Electroacupuncture Treatment Like? A treatment using electroacupuncture starts out exactly the same as a regular acupuncture session. The licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) diagnoses the root cause of a patient’s symptoms from a Traditional Chinese Medical perspective and determines the unique combination of acupuncture points that will best address that specific patient’s health concerns. The patient usually lies down on a massage table and the L.Ac. inserts a number of tiny, hair-thin needles through the skin. Upon insertion of those little needles, the patient’s central nervous system kicks off a cascade of physiological, biochemical and biomechanical responses. When electroacupuncture is added to the equation, the L.Ac. will attach thin wires to 2 or more needles using tiny alligator clips. The practitioner will then turn up the electricity very, very slowly until the

patient first starts to feel a sensation. This sensation can feel like a small vibration, a buzzing or tingling feeling, or a mild muscle contraction. Once the sensation is established, the L.Ac. will generally turn the electricity up (again very slowly) until a more substantial sensation is present. Personally, I tell my patients to say “when” at the point where the intensity of the sensation is about a 4 or a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10 - the point at which there is no discomfort, but if I turned it up any more it might start to become uncomfortable. At this point, depending on the condition, the L.Ac. may adjust the frequency of the electric current. For example, when the patient’s symptoms straddle the line between pain and neuropathy, I usually set the frequency to alternate between a higher one (around 100 Hz) to a lower one (around 3 Hz). This sensation generally feels like a “buzzing” followed by a “tapping” back and forth for the duration of the

If you weren’t already convinced that your body is an amazing feat of bioengineering, it turns out that dry human skin is actually a very effective insulator of electricity. Therefore, TENS units deliver the therapeutic effect almost literally “skin deep.” With electroacupuncture, however, even though the devices we use are very similar to TENS units, we are able to deliver the electrical current both deeper into the affected tissue and to a much more precise and focused area. www.NaturalNutmeg.com

electroacupuncture treatment. In this case, the higher frequency has a more inhibitory effect (i.e., it blocks the pain) while the lower frequency has a more excitatory effect (i.e., it stimulates the nerves). Typically, we leave the electricity running for the entire course of the treatment. Most people actually feel the electricity less and less over the duration of the treatment as the body acclimates to the stimulus. This is perfectly fine since, despite the lack of sensation, the electric-stimulus machine (E-Stim for short) is still delivering the current to the affected tissue. Electroacupuncture is used for many conditions, but most commonly for musculoskeletal pain. Tight, spasmed muscles respond exceedingly well to this therapy. The rapid contraction and relaxation of the electrical stimulus essentially confuses the muscle to the point where it just gives up its death grip and goes back to its normal, healthy state of being. Tendonitis also responds extremely well as does osteoarthritis of many joints; knees especially do well with electroacupuncture. Even low back pain radiating down the leg (as in sciatica) is generally relieved with electroacupuncture. In certain cases of anxiety and depression, we may even hook up the E-Stim to a couple of acupuncture points on the forehead (this is often when I get the lobotomy comment). As with regular, non-electrified acupuncture, electroacupuncture can take a handful of sessions to show its effect. That said, a majority of patients do notice some improvement even after their first treatment. In any case, with most conditions, we should know if electroacupuncture is an appropriate therapy within about 4-6 treatments. Not necessarily that the condition will be 100% better at that point, but the patient should definitely notice some degree of improvement which will let us know that electroacupuncture should continue to be effective for them. So despite the tortured images that come to mind, electroacupuncture is another great tool available to acupuncturists to bring the body’s attention to areas of dysfunction to increase circulation and reduce pain and inflammation. Your hair won’t stand on end and you won’t start picking up satellite transmissions. However, electroacupuncture will most likely make you feel “shockingly” great! Hear from one of our patients: “I walked into CT Family Acupuncture with 6 out of 10 pain. Having struggled with rib pain for almost 5 years, acupuncture was the only thing I had not tried. I avoided it because I felt it was expensive and was not covered by my insurance. After my second treatment of electroacupuncture, I noticed my pain was gone! I could work all day without having the nagging pain in my ribs always there in the background. Without the pain, I had more energy and I finally could sleep at night. It has been worth every penny and I wish I had tried it sooner.” - Amy G., Coventry Lake Matt Maneggia is a licensed acupuncturist and the founder of Connecticut Family Acupuncture with offices in Coventry, Glastonbury and West Hartford. The Language of Disease By Katy Firisin, ND

T

he predominant conventional medical system in the United States has evolved into a system of labels and categories. Diagnosis and treatment is based upon fitting individuals into categories and protocols. In 2013, 7 out of 10 Americans were taking at least one prescription medication. This means that 70% of Americans have been given at least one label of disease. The result is a population that believes they are sick or dysfunctional. When discussing a patients’ medical history, they often say things like “I AM a diabetic” or “I AM an asthmatic”. “I have had diarrhea my whole life”, or “This is just how I am” is often followed by “I can’t go a day without my medication.” What is Your Belief System? When a patient is given a medication and kept on that medication for life, there is a belief system that is learned and reinforced. According to this model, once you have a diagnosis, a symptom or a label, it is unchangeable, permanent and you will have to rely on an external support in order to manage this condition. This has led to war vocabulary in the pharmaceutical industry, social media campaigns and a multitude of fundraising campaigns that will battle for a cure on our behalf. A battle implies an opposition, an invader that we need to take down, annihilate or suppress. This is consistent with a medical model that provides a string of medication categories that begin with “anti”: anti-depressants, anti-biotics, anti-coagulants, and immunesuppressives to name a few. If only that non-profit can find something smarter and more powerful than the human body and mother nature before it’s too late! Unfortunately we have created a system where patients are either doomed to chronic disease maintenance or somehow need to gear up for war and the fight of their life. People live in fear of getting a simple fever or common cold or virus.

What if We Looked at Things Differently? What if patients did not become their illness and identified their bodies as smart and effective rather than sick and dysfunctional? What if rather than being “anti” our bodies, we work with them to heal? The human body, like all things in the natural universe, functions intelligently by design. The symptoms we develop, the diseases we have identified, are the body’s reaction to something that isn’t right. Naturopathic medicine is based entirely on the belief that the body is intelligent and that if given the right circumstances, it will always move in the direction of healing. If you cut your finger, does the blood not clot and the wound not heal on its own without provocation? This is not a novel idea. It has been a practice of medicine that was adopted long before many of our contemporary ways. When looking at our diseases, rather than fighting against our own body, we need to identify the cause of these symptoms and respect the healing power of nature.

Naturopathic medicine encourages the patient to trust their body. If a patient believes that they are their disease, if they ARE diabetic, healing can never occur and hope is nonexistent. Naturopathic Doctors give patients the tools for healing rather than weapons for battle against their own body. If you are one of these 7 out of 10 individuals who take a prescription medication, the first step to healing is to challenge your inner dialogue and your beliefs about your own health. Belief in the healing power of nature, this vital force, imbues the patient with strength and hope. Dr. Katy Firisin is the medical director of Coastal Natural Medicine in Southport, CT. Mindful Moments for Children and Teachers in CT By James Trifone, PhD ducators and parents alike are taking notice of the stress that surrounds our children on a daily basis. The stressors and demands of modern American society leaves students at a disadvantage that can only be remedied by a significant change in the way we structure and approach teaching and learning. However, while well intentioned, the current nationally imposed reform efforts have led to increased levels of anxiety, frustration and stress amongst educators. Moreover, contending with students’ increasing levels of anxiety, depression and stress to succeed in a competitive world have led to unprecedented educator absenteeism and burnout. Not surprisingly, research studies have revealed that stressed teachers create stressed students.

E

If we, as adults, are living and dying stressed out, how have we not caught on that students are also impacted by environmental stress? Perhaps, one might wonder if teenagers and children experience more stress than adults, since they are not ‘in control’ of situations as adults would be. Youngsters are also in the process of maturing, trying to find their place and exploring the world, which, of course adds another layer of underlying stress. Add to that the expectations of tests, homework, pressure to succeed or just to pass a class. Moreover, students are stressed to get a scholarship or make a team, cope with family hardships, health problems, parents fighting or breaking up, navigating their own feelings and relationships, not to mention trying to fit in or standing out. How do we expect students to find success and exceed in academics if they are not being taught healthy coping mechanisms? Many Connecticut teachers and soon-to-be teachers are choosing to release tension by engaging in grounding strategies, meditation, mindfulness and yoga. These professionals 16

are working to better their lives. Moreover, integrating such strategies into their classrooms educators are beginning to see their students transform out of the stress culture into people who are focused on creating self-awareness and balance. Alisa Wright, teacher of wellness at Regional School District 6 in Morris, Warren, and Goshen elementary schools, felt that she had personally reached the point in her life where she wanted her attitude and selfawareness to be more focused so she could create the environment that helped her thrive. When Ms. Wright was a student herself pursuing an Integrative Health and Healing Masters of Art degree at The Graduate Institute, in Bethany Connecticut, she was encouraged to explore Mindful Moments, as she calls them. Mindfulness is the practice of being and staying aware of objects, nature and the people around you. Repetitive actions and schedules take us away from being keenly aware of our surroundings, while mindfulness tries to connect with the normal everyday moments. These were moments of reflection on uniqueness, tapping into potential, and opening up to the realm of possibility that surrounds us. Ms. Wright started promoting mindfulness through the use of a community garden at her school. Students get to engage with nature and learn patience and focus and reflection as they work and reflect in the garden. She has seen that when the students are being taught how, “to make observations on a holistic level allows them to explore details overlooked in the past, and they more fully understand the importance of becoming part of the garden experience. Students notice the beauty of nature and their relationship to it.” She has found that if her students are practicing mindfulness and reflection before she begins teaching them for the day, the

classroom settles down with a focused energy which has a restorative impact on the rest of their day. This is allowing students to have a deepened understanding of the interconnectedness of self, others, and the world. This change isn’t just happening in her classroom, the entire district has taken notice of the changes and many teachers have implemented her Mindful Moments. These teachers who have come on board with the idea are also finding similar results. Ms. Wright believes that helping students learn mindfulness and stress defusing techniques will have a “ripple effect of good” on the student’s lives. It should be said that with so much chaos and stress surrounding us, it is great to know that the future generation is being taught different, BETTER coping mechanisms for handling the hard moments in life. Maybe our children will be able to do more than cope, maybe they will be able to rise above stress and live in mindful awareness in every moment of their life. But to get there, to give them the chance to have a different lifestyle for them to know a less stressful existence, educators and parents need to make a mindset change. Schools of today and tomorrow need to embrace a new culture of learning and thinking, whereby classrooms become mindscapes for engaging and drawing upon the inherent creative and intellectual capacities of all learners. It is now necessary to deconstruct the current educational framework and dialogue on reconstructing ones that better address the challenges of learning and thinking in the 21st century. Dr. James Trifone, Academic Director for The Graduate Institute’s Master of Arts in Learning and Thinking Degree Program. For more information, visit www.Learn.edu See ad on page 14.

“No, you are”. This is a clue that we need to examine our thoughts, feelings and behaviors. If we find that we are experiencing guilt, having uncomfortable sensations in our bodies or having knee jerk anger, then we need to entertain the idea that what is going on reflects our disowned or unconscious self.

It’s Not You, It’s Me By James W. Osborne, MS, LPC, BCPC rojection is a psychological defense originally identified by Sigmund Freud in which one unconsciously attributes their feelings or impulses onto another. The other carries our flaws and is responsible for our misery. Projection is a conflict between unconscious feelings or impulses and conscious beliefs or values. Projecting the feelings onto others or situations is an attempt to externalize the problem. An example of projection is when a husband who has suppressed sexual desires for a coworker, then accuses his wife of being unfaithful.

P

Tom Hanks as Chuck Nolan in Cast Away projects his fears, disowned self or unconsciousness onto Wilson, the volleyball. He attempts to make the unconscious conscious by giving voice to his fears, transferring the ownership of difficult or unwanted feelings onto an external source. A person who is argumentative relates that others are angry and hostile denying their own feelings and behaviors. Projection almost always comes with anger and is common with Narcissists, paranoid people, bullies and those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Bullies will focus on the insecurities of others rather than deal with their own concerns. They find the most vulnerable individuals and attack them without risk of emotional retaliation. Projection is a form of blame shifting – “It’s not me, it’s them”. Because the feelings are unconscious and disowned, the individual denies any identification with the feelings or impulses. In fact, they often feel attacked and see themselves as the victim not the attacker. In addition, blaming a real victim is a common example of projection. A person is sexually assaulted and rather than focus on the actions of the perpetrator, the victim is criticized for somehow attracting the assault. “It was the way they were dressed, where they were, perhaps they drank too much, what did they expect to happen, etc.”

Projections are not always negative. There are forms in which an individual attributes positive wants, desires and fantasies onto another. This is very common with co-dependency. A person who is lonely and dating may meet someone and immediately find the person to be their soul mate - the perfect match without knowing them. They project their hopes, dreams and desires onto them. They see the smallest actions as confirming their feelings for them. They will often see things in terms of black and white. People may also project that others share the same values, skills or can do the same things as them. They take for granted that the other is like them instead of seeing them for who they really are. Projection differs from transference in that transference involves at least three people. The individual attributes feelings and behaviors of someone else onto a third person. A person in therapy might say “my therapist is critical, just like my father.” They transfer their unconscious feelings towards their father onto the therapist. Since projection is an unconscious defense mechanism, the only way to begin to resolve it is to become aware of the projection. If what is projected does not stick to the other, then we are forced to examine and pay attention to our own negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors. One way we can become aware is when the other person is clear that what is being projected has nothing to do with them. They might respond with, “That’s not mine, perhaps you should look in the mirror”. As children we used to respond,

We can orient ourselves to what is happening in the present moment, focus on our breath and ground ourselves – ask ourselves: “Where did these thoughts or feelings come from? Who do they belong to? Why are they familiar (or as John Bradshaw spells it – family-ar).” If possible, we process our thoughts, feelings with a safe person, group or therapist. We could journal our thoughts and feelings or use other creative methods to bring the thoughts and feelings to the surface – drawing, movement, singing, painting, meditation, etc. We can begin by seeing “Life as a Mirror”, anything happening in the outer environment is also happening to and within me. Reflecting honestly with forgiveness and compassion can begin to integrate the disowned self. James W. How You Think About Pain Affects Your Pain Response By Tamara Sachs, MD

C

hronic Pain is an entirely different beast than acute pain. Chronic pain comes from the brain and is perpetuated by inflammation, molecules that tell nerves and the brain that there is a problem. Chronic pain is also a subjective perception, how we think about pain affects our pain. In the past few years, medicine has made pain the “5th vital sign.” When we focus on the pain, and when healthcare providers continually ask someone what their pain level is, we inadvertently perpetuate the patient’s pain, because what the brain focuses on becomes more real. Although well intentioned, this new “vital sign” was introduced at the same time that Big Pharma told doctors that narcotics were not addictive. Those two things together pushed doctors to treat pain more aggressively than ever before, with the tragic consequences we are now experiencing as a nation. Pain is NOT a Vital Sign Unlike pain, when a true vital sign is too high or too low, you die. You still have vital signs when you are asleep or uncon-

Natural Nutmeg - September 2019

scious, but you do not have pain. Pain requires consciousness and is subjective, not objective. It is also important to note that 75% of asymptomatic people over age 50 have MRI abnormalities, including bulging discs and stenosis that look like they would cause pain, but do not. MRIs may be easily overread or misinterpreted in chronic pain patients. It is critical to understand what is and what is not abnormal. Additionally, being told and shown a picture of a physical and permanent abnormality as a cause of pain makes it much harder for some to change the brain’s perception of pain, and it may even ensure its chronicity. Inflammation and the Brain The longer chronic pain has existed, the more comprehensive and individualized the treatment plan needs to be, but two key areas that must be addressed are inflammation and the brain. Many chronic pain sufferers learn how to perceive their pain differently. Pain is always worse when you don’t know why it hurts because that’s scary. When you understand why there is pain, when you know its source and what will and will not

happen as a result of the pain, your nervous system calms down. Adrenaline and cortisol go down, inflammation goes down and that, in fact, reduces pain. Techniques for Pain Perception The techniques that help with pain perception include meditation, mindfulness, hypnosis, guided imagery and cognitive behavioral therapies. These all help to decrease the brain’s perception of pain and dampen the nervous system’s response to pain. Other approaches that are useful in reducing chronic pain include: FSM (Frequency Specific Microcurrent), acupuncture, LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone), CBD, medical cannabis and low light laser, to name a few. I have had great success with FSM, which is a unique energy resonance treatment especially useful in fibromyalgia, post-concussive fibromyalgia and in chronic nerve pain (where nothing else seems to work). FSM has given impressive and lasting results for many of my patients with a variety of chronic pain syndromes. It can be used to reset brain pathways as well as lower inflammation. LDN works in the brain to promote healing and improve immune function. It has been life-changing for many of my patients and very useful as an adjunct in the treatment of most of my other patients with pain syndromes. Muscle spasms release chemical mediators that perpetuate inflammation and pain. Gentle exercise or daily movement is crucial, and therapeutic massage, chiropractic care, craniosacral therapy and other bodywork techniques are an important part of healing. Fascia is still a poorly understood system, but is an important part of inflammation and healing. As with any disturbance in the body, the basics: sleep, diet and nutrition, a

spiritual or community connection are always critical. No matter what else a clinician does, if those basic things are not addressed, other treatment modalities will only be marginally or temporarily effective. Sleep is critical to all healing, especially to reboot the brain and decrease inflammation. An anti-inflammatory diet is also vital, and it is just as important to eat nutritious foods as it is to avoid inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, added sugars, processed, artificial, GMO and refined foods). Correcting deficiencies and removing interfering issues are the foundation of Functional Medicine and this is especially true in chronic pain patients. Magnesium, vitamin D and several other deficiencies perpetuate pain, as can stress, depression, anger and other negative emotions.

Could Toxic Burden Be Causing Type 2 Diabetes? By Ashley Burkman, ND

W

e have been trained to think of type II diabetes as the type that you “earn” through diet and lifestyle choices. While lifestyle does play a role in the development and management of this disease, there is a very overlooked piece to this puzzle, toxic burden. Toxins are all around us from pesticides sprayed on foods, plastics, cleaning agents and beauty products. Our environment is becoming exceedingly toxic and our bodies are being forced to take on this load. With the rise of severe food and environmental allergies, eczema, autoimmune conditions and chronic illnesses like type II diabetes, taking a closer look at the role these toxins play in our health milieu is necessary. Increase in Diagnosis Rates Diabetes diagnosis rates have seen an 8-fold increase from the 1950’s to the mid 2010’s. While sugar consumption rates have increased over years, of note,

20

Natural Nutmeg - September 2019

“Toxin management appears to be just as important as diet therapy when it comes to treating type II Diabetes” Joseph Pizzorno, ND diabetes rates sharply increase 40+ years after increased sugar consumption rates began to rise, raising the question if sugar is the primary push into diabetes. What is seen, however, is a correlation between the increase of diabetes rates and the release of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Although this does not indicate a direct cause, there is a clear correlation. Additionally, while obesity is an acknowledged risk factor for the development of diabetes, when examined, obese individuals with lower levels of POPs did not have an increased risk of diabetes. Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, Editor in Chief of “Integrative Medicine: A Clinician’s Journal”, has applied a formula used to determine the risk of lung cancer due to smoking to the risk of developing diabetes in a population by looking at specific toxins called “diabetogens”, or agents thought to contribute to diabetes development. While this is a useful tool, it is nearly impossible to find individuals who have not been exposed to the toxin being studied to use as controls due to such extraordinary exposure rates. The top toxins (diabetogens) and increased

rates of diabetes are as follows: phthalates - 22% increase, arsenic - 18% increase, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - 16% increase, and bisphenol A - 14% increase. Blood sugar imbalances in individuals with type II diabetes are largely due to reduced insulin production or reduced insulin receptor sensitivity. Reduced insulin production has been seen to be directly correlated to the arsenic load in an individual’s body, with suspected reduction due to damage to pancreatic beta cells which create insulin. Reduced insulin receptor sensitivity was seen with increased Bisphenol A (BPA) levels due to it blocking receptor sites. Top Diabetogens 1. Phthalates: these are a group of chemicals used to create durability and clarity in plastic products and used as a stabilizer in beauty products. 2. Arsenic: exposure is largely through food and water. Public water systems have a permissible amount of arsenic allowed in drinking water. Additionally, seafood, rice and poultry are also known for higher arsenic levels. 3. Bisphenol A: BPA is used in plastic products we become exposed to through drinking bottles, food packages, canned foods, medical implants and in dentistry. 4. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): these are carcinogens that come from cigarette smoke, foods that are charred and air pollution where fossil fuels are burned. PAHs are extremely common in the environment. Determining Your Toxic Load There are tests available to assess your body burden of various toxins, however, this is not always a necessary first step. Knowing where these toxins come from and avoidance should be a priority for everyone, not just those at risk of diabetes. Another assessment of significance is the GGT (γ-glutamyl transferase) test, an assessment of the body’s ability to recycle glutathione, the most important detoxifying antioxidant. Higher levels of GGT correlate with reduced ability for the body to keep up with the demand to generate glutathione for detoxification. Additionally, increased GGT levels are seen in those with increased hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. HbA1c is an assessment of blood sugar stability over an 8-12 week period and is used to monitor diabetic patients. This link indicates a connection between body toxic burden and blood sugar stability.

Other assessments include inflammatory markers, nutrient assessments and liver enzyme panels. Through these assessments the need for detoxification can be inferred and a simple detox plan can be implemented. If symptoms or treatment outcomes are not being met, testing for specific toxins can be helpful and targeted therapies can then be utilized.

2. Increase your body’s ability to detox by promoting glutathione levels through specific supplementation recommendations. 3. Increase hydration and fiber in diet in order to maintain proper elimination through bowels and bladder. 4. Targeted interventions through supplements and nutrients to increase detoxification of specific toxins and a plan to avoid re-exposure. In summary, lifestyle interventions are always a key aspect in the management of diabetes but what appears to be equally important is the ability to detox appropriately. Environmental exposures and detox assessment should be considered paramount in treating any chronic illness, especially diabetes.

Healing with Ancient Wisdom & Modern Science By Jen Tartakoff, L.Ac.

A

s humans living on earth we are of one race existing in one place. Although we are one in that perspective we vary in many ways such as places in the globe vary from section to section. This phenomena is expressed throughout the body’s diverse layers making up one whole organism. How then can two people have different experiences when placed in the same environment and same situation? Well some chalk it up to “perception creates reality” and while that plays a major role in our psychology, I’ve personally had my perception clobbered by a reality quite different than the current lens I was seeing through. This implies we interact with our environment beyond intellectual means. While the intellect allows us to calculate and articulate our experience, it’s obvious to us that other factors are at play. Interesting research shows the human heart being a stronger bio-magnetic field generator in the human body, and because the heart is thousands of times more powerful magnetically than the brain, some draw the conclusion that the heart is a better communicator. New scientific information on alpha waves (the frequency of brain waves associated with prayer and meditation) can be used to treat PTSD. Each study confirms certain ancient wisdom and time tested modalities, however it still carries the same theme of western thinking and a mindset that dissects and isolates that one active ingredient and distills it to a one to one correlation between input and outcome.

ROBIN CLARE, LIFE BUSINESS COACH

This type of linear thinking has positively influenced our world in some ways scaling down a complex universe and bringing clarity to confusing superstition, yet it has caused major destruction to the wholistic ways of harmonizing with our environment internally and externally. The idea of attacking a disease or cutting out a part that is no longer functioning as it used to before giving the body’s immune system a fighting chance to regenerate is a dangerous way of determining an action plan. Just consider the original spelling of Wholistic, base word being “whole” being cut to holistic with that base word being a “hole”. Traditional methods like Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have a deeper consideration for the whole and do everything in their nature to protect and preserve the original essence of the human body. Within TCM there are five different branches of treatment: acupuncture, qi gong, diet, herbal medicine and Tuina (medical massage). Active therapeutic intervention is the second line of defense, with diet, lifestyle and quality movement being the primary. Each modality has its own strength and specific approach to treating injury and disease. It is the combination, however, integrated at the appropriate time and application that works deeply on the physical, mental, emotional and energetic levels. The synergy that arises from using all branches of treatment creates a profound impact on the internal dynamics, as well as the life experience of the individual. Here, now, in modern times where information is literally at our fingertips many of us have an opportunity to lay down a new foundation built by both ancient wisdom and modern science. The spirit of synergy itself is calling on everyone to do away with divisions and to find that common denominator that unifies the human race. With that said we have to acknowledge differences in culture, in constitution and in communication. A wholistic approach to bio-individuality is in fact the most powerful tool a healer, teacher, and leader can consider when dealing with the complexities of a human being. Jen Tartakoff, a valuable member of the Nourishing Necessities team is a Licensed Acupuncturist and Reiki Master, who combines treatments with Medical Qi Gong, Tuina/Amma, Eastern Dietary Therapy, Yoga, and Qi Gong movements. Treating Pain Naturally By Christie A. Morelli, ND

P

ain is cited as the most common reason Americans access the health care system and is a leading cause of disability. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates approximately 76.2 million Americans have suffered from pain that lasts longer than 24 hours and millions more suffer from acute pain. According to the CDC, as many as 1 in 5 people suffering from non-cancer pain receive a prescription opioid. These alarming facts paired with our country’s ongoing opioid crisis stress the need for the implementation of natural pain treatments into today’s healthcare system. The natural treatments for pain include, but are not limited to, herbal medicine, nutraceuticals, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, manipulation and lifestyle modifications.

wood are credited with muscle-relaxing effects that would contribute to its traditional use for pain and muscle spasms.

Herbal Medicine

Nutraceuticals

Herbs commonly used to treat pain are cayenne pepper, Boswellia, hemp, Jamaican dogwood, turmeric and willow bark. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which is a substance that has been shown to reduce the amount of substance P. Substance P is a chemical in the body which carries pain messages to the brain. With decreased levels of substance P come decreased levels of pain due to fewer pain messages reaching the brain.

Nutraceuticals, or pharmaceutical alternatives that propose physiological benefits, commonly used to treat pain are bromelain and magnesium. Bromelain is an enzyme derived from pineapple stems, which has both analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. Bromelain inhibits the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and directly decreases the level of various pain mediators, including bradykinin.

Resin extracts of Boswellia have been used for centuries to treat chronic inflammatory diseases. The anti-inflammatory properties of Boswellia are due to the inhibition of the pro-inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase. Hemp contains a cannabinoid called cannabidiol (CBD), which has recently gained popularity in the media. CBD indirectly acts on cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system resulting in decreased inflammation and pain. Jamaican dogwood is one of the strongest non-narcotic herbal analgesics. The chemical constituents in Jamaican dog-

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is very anti-inflammatory. Curcumin affects inflammation by the down-regulation of inflammatory transcription factors, cytokines, redox status, protein kinases, and enzymes. Willow bark has been used to treat pain and inflammation for thousands of years due to salicin content. When willow bark is ingested and absorbed, the salicin is metabolized to saligenin, which the liver metabolizes to salicylic acid, a precursor to aspirin. White willow bark acts as a nonselective inhibitor of the pro-inflammatory enzyme cyclooxygenase.

Magnesium, a mineral, is very important for many bodily functions. In regards to pain magnesium inhibits calcium ions from entering cells by blocking NMDA receptors, which inhibits the perception and sensation of pain. Numerous studies have found magnesium beneficial for patients suffering from neuropathic pain, dysmenorrhea, tension headache and acute migraine attack. Acupuncture Acupuncture is a subsection of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves the insertion of thin needles into the skin to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissues throughout the body. It is believed to stimulate the body's energy-carrying channels in an attempt to correct imbalances and to restore health. Acupuncture enhances endogenous opiates and releases corticosteroids, relieving pain and enhancing the healing process. Hydrotherapy Hydrotherapy is a modality in alternative medicine, occupational therapy and physiotherapy that involves the use of water internally and externally for treatment of various diseases and conditions includ-

Experts say a diet overhaul can have a dramatic effect on those suffering from chronic pain and a comprehensive diet plan should be part of such patients’ treatment plans. The ideal diet for chronic pain sufferers would be an anti-inflammatory diet due to the effect of inflammation levels on pain. The main components of an antiinflammatory diet are consume a minimum of 8 servings of fresh vegetables/fruit daily, restrict dairy/grains, and avoid red meat. Also, daily exercise, such as walking, swimming or cycling, can optimize the effects of an anti-inflammatory diet. The combination of an anti-inflammatory diet and an exercise regimen may also encourage weight loss, which is crucial as obesity is highly inflammatory. Postpartum Nutrition for Mom and Baby By Carolina Padilla, ND

T

here is a lot of information out there about pregnancy and the required steps that a mom ought to take in order to have a healthy pregnancy, however, there is little information about what a mom should do to take care of herself and baby after pregnancy. Great nutrition and care during your pregnancy have helped your baby develop and grow. Now after nine months, you have finally met your lovely baby. Whether you are breastfeeding or not, it is important to take care of yourself and your new baby. Nutrition You need the appropriate nutrition to recuperate and get your energy back. If you decide to breastfeed, you need to have the right amount of calories and right nutrition to be able to produce breast milk. Caloric intake varies between 2,100 to 2,300, but honestly there is no magic number. It all comes down to how much body fat you accumulated during pregnancy, how much milk you are producing, and how active you are. Let me explain what I mean by body fat. During pregnancy, your very smart body accumulates fat to be able to provide calories during and after pregnancy. After pregnancy, your body will start burning fat to give you the appropriate calories so you are able to produce breast milk. This means that breastfeeding will help you lose those pregnancy pounds. Please keep in mind that losing weight should be slow and safe. Studies have shown that gradual weight loss up to a pound a week does not interfere with milk production or your baby’s weight gain. If you are losing weight faster than this, try to eat a little more. It’s not just calories that are needed; your body also requires different nutrients. Let’s talk about some: • Calcium: It’s hardly surprising that the requirement for Calcium increases when breast-feeding. Aim for 4 to 5 servings of Calcium-rich foods each day. • Vitamin D: Another nutrient that is often in low supply when breastfeeding. It’s recommended that you continue the 10mcg per day that you have been taking during pregnancy. • Omega-3’s: Supports the vital development of your baby’s brain, eyes, and nerves, which continue to grow and develop after birth. Continue to eat oil rich fish, though be aware of some fish’s high mercury content. Stick with small to medium size fish and take good quality Omega-3 supplements.

• Water: From just a few tablespoons of breast milk in the early days of breastfeeding, you may go on to produce up to 3 1/2 cups per day. The recommendations of water intake during breastfeeding is about 12 glasses per day. It sounds like a lot but you can meet this by having a drink at each meal and snack, and when breastfeeding. Keep a bottle of water handy wherever you tend to breastfeed. You will be surprised how thirsty you get. • Limit Alcohol/Caffiene: They both pass in small amounts from your body into your breast milk and need to be limited. Vegetarian/Vegan Diet Just as during pregnancy, a vegetarian or vegan diet can be perfectly healthy for breastfeeding, it just needs to be well planned. The nutrient requirements will be the same as before. Make sure to include Vitamin B12, Vitamin D and Omega-3 oils. These are nutrients that are at extra risk of being depleted in a vegan and vegetarian diet. If you are a vegan, you should be supplementing with Vitamin B12 and Calcium. You will have to increase your plant-based protein intake each day to make sure you have the proper nutrition for you and your baby. Benefits of Breastfeeding I’m not here to persuade you to breastfeed your baby. However, I will tell you a few of the benefits of breastfeeding. • It will improve your mental health and lower the risk of postpartum depression. • After delivery, breastfeeding reduces the risk of blood loss and delays the return of your menstrual cycle. • Reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, breast and ovarian cancer. • Improves bone density and decreases the risk of hip fracture later in life. It all comes down to doing what makes you feel comfortable and happy. Make sure you are well nourished. Follow your appetite, your body will tell you when you need more food. ordeal was over, he asked what happened. I told him that the people we’d just met with did not want to hear from me, and I was sure they wouldn’t want to buy from me. Frustrated, my father simply asked, “What is the worst that could happen?” I responded immediately, “They could say no!”

Become a Fire-Starter at the Office By Sandi Coyne-Gilbert, MBA DM, MS Organizational Leadership Program Director, Goodwin College

A

re you ready to start a fire at work? I don’t mean becoming an arsonist. I mean becoming someone who accelerates whatever they focus their attention on with determination and persistence. Fires are dynamic, ever-changing, fluid mysteries that challenge limits with their presence and power. There is a life force in a fire. Fires move with cause and can’t be avoided and neither can fire-starters. What is a Fire-Starter? Fire-starters are individuals who are flexible in their thinking and fearlessly share their thoughts with others. They thrive on jumping into discussion without waiting for someone to give them a cue. Fire-starters promote the importance of sharing ideas, and empower others to open up and speak up. They’re people you respect and see value in. They acknowledge your ideas, and you feel comfortable around them. Every day, fire-starters harness the energy of ideas and people. They lead with passion, purpose, and potential. Still waiting to start your fire? How often have you wanted to share something in a meeting, but instead kept quiet and waited for someone else to begin the discussion? Aren’t we all just waiting to start the fire? We really want to be first to speak, but subordinate our

How I Got the Courage to Become a Fire-Starter When I was growing up, I quit college — three times, actually, before I finally graduated. My father was pretty worried to say the least. He wanted me to be able to take care of myself and hoped I would join him in his insurance business. My father was not someone who took no for an answer, so he kept at me until he finally convinced me. I took the insurance exam and went to work with him. The easy part was the exam; the tough part was working with my father. One night, we visited one of his clients. Although he had planned out what I would say, when the time came, I just couldn’t do it and he had to cover for me. Once the

He was stunned! “You’ve never heard no before? I have said it to you many times!” Then he added something that changed my life: “No is a very small word, only two letters. Don’t ever allow yourself to be defined by two little letters. No is a word for now, not forever. No doesn’t matter. The people who loved you in the morning will love you at the end of the day, even if someone tells you no.” In that short speech, my father gave me the courage to become a fire-starter: someone who takes risks, respects the contributions of others, but most importantly respects their own. Fire-starters are the individuals being promoted at work. They take risks based on their instincts and beliefs. If their ideas get shot down, they find another way, no matter what. Their fires are inextinguishable; no matter how hard the world tries to defeat them, they keep going. Being a fire-starter isn’t the slightest bit easy, but it is certainly worthwhile. As you begin to weave your trajectory with words, actions, and dynamic participation, you will grow and accelerate. Your fire will stand tall. What would you do if you weren’t afraid of hearing the word no? What can you do today that might promote the next steps in your career? Better yet, what can you do to make a difference in a project, in a conversation, in a life? Fire-starters think about these questions every day. Her work with at-risk and marginalized groups provided her with unique insights into the power of education for people in transition. 3 Financial Planning Strategies for Couples

By Caroline Wetzel, Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®)

R

ecently a woman in her 40s approached me to talk at the end of a financial workshop that I delivered. With tears in her eyes she said simply, “Thank you for tonight. I wish that I met you six months ago.” Deeply moved and very curious, I asked if she would share more. Theresa and her husband Francis (names changed to protect privacy) made a deal when they got married: he’d take care of their family finances and she’d focus on her career. Francis enjoyed managing their money and Theresa found it uninteresting. They both knew how much Theresa loved her profession. Shortly after agreeing to this deal, Theresa became very successful in her work. Their family grew to include children they both adored, and things got busy… very busy. Life always seemed to get in the way whenever Theresa and Francis meant to talk about their finances. While both Theresa and Francis knew that it was important to have these conversations, there always was a reason why they didn’t happen. And Theresa unsuccessfully tried to rationalize away that lingering guilt that she felt about not knowing more about their finances by reminding herself of just how good her husband was at managing their money and how much he enjoyed doing it. Ultimately, Theresa justified not talking about finances with Francis as her husband’s gift to her; Francis loved her so much that he owned all responsibility for this important part of their lives and didn’t bother her with it. This made it that much more devastating when Theresa’s healthy husband died very suddenly and unexpectedly, just months before Theresa and I met at the workshop. Not only was Theresa thrust into the shocking loss of her life partner at a young age and thrown into new responsibil-

ities being the sole parent to multiple children under 18 years old, she was propelled into the most traumatic search and find experience of her life. Learning the different pieces of her family’s total financial picture, trying to access them, and then determining what to do about them, having no context for how they were organized and why. Theresa explained that my workshop was the first time that she had heard a financial advisor emphasize the importance of estate planning as part of comprehensive financial planning, and additionally offer specific strategies that all people should follow even if they trusted someone else like their spouses to manage family finances. Unfortunately, Theresa is not alone. Too few people in committed relationships have clarity on their collective financial picture. It’s okay to divide up responsibilities so that everything gets done; in fact, this can be strategic, efficient, and enjoyable if you end up being responsible for tasks you like to do. Also, it may make sense to separate out what you have and what you spend

by “Yours” “Mine” and “Ours.” What’s not good is losing sight of the pieces that comprise your family’s total financial situation, understanding why they are as they are, and knowing how to access and adjust them if needed. If you are like Theresa and trust a partner to manage finances for your family, the following are three strategies I recommend you both consider to protect yourselves. 1. Assemble the Pieces of Your Financial Puzzle • Have clarity around what you own (e.g. investments, insurance, property) and what you owe (e.g. mortgage, college debt, credit card debt). • Know where your money is located and its intended use (e.g. tax-deferred retirement accounts not to be touched for years versus emergency savings to be utilized as needed). • Store financial details, (insurance) policies, estate planning documents, and instructions for how to access (online) accounts in a safe place.

Integrative Bowen Therapy for Treatment of Chronic Pain By Craig T. Fasullo, ND

P

ain is something that we all experience throughout our lives. Whether severe, moderate, or mild, everyone has had to bear some pain. In most cases, pain is a signal from the body that something has gone awry. While we usually consider pain to be sensation felt within the physical body, it does not always have to result from a physical injury. Mental and emotional pains can be felt physically as well. In all cases, the treatment of pain is currently a very relevant topic. As made terribly clear by the current opioid crisis, the mismanagement of pain and discomfort can have dire ramifications. It is an important time to reconsider the human relationship to pain. As stated, pain affects everyone. Statistics show that over 100 million adults in America live with some degree of chronic pain. Over 500 billion health care dollars are spent annually on pain management and treatment. Standard treatment options are limited and usually focused on pharmaceutical drugs and surgical intervention. Unfortunately, these treatments have their risks. Long term use of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen) and Tylenol can cause damage to vital organ systems. Other treatment options are urgently needed. Types of Pain Pain derived from different areas is treated somewhat differently. Consider muscle pain versus joint pain. Muscles are well fed with blood flow, and so can recover quicker from injury or trauma. Joints are complicated structures which are constructed of tendons, in addition to the dense connective tissue that connects bone to bone, called ligaments. As there is less circulatory blood flow within these

structures, recovery time is slower, as is the case with common injuries such as tendonitis of the elbow or shoulder. Many natural treatments, including hydrotherapy, use the power of increased circulation to promote more rapid healing of connective tissue, including within the joints. In cases of referred pain, an injury at one location can actually manifest as physical discomfort somewhere else. Headaches are a classic example of referred pain. In many cases, while pain is felt on the top of the head or behind the eyes, the true source of the pain is within one of the muscles of the neck, upper back, or shoulder. Especially with tension headaches, understanding patterns of referred pain can dramatically improve the potential for successful treatment. Bowen Therapy Technique The key to successful treatment of pain is to address the underlying dysfunction while being sure to bear in mind all aspects of the body. Within the musculoskeletal system, it is important to consider the muscle, joint, and connective tissue, as there is a constant dynamic interrelationship between each of these physical components. Hands-on physical medicine modalities will always be necessary to address physical complaints. Comprehensive neuromuscular and myofascial techniques, such as Bowen therapy, are incredibly effective in reconfiguring the body away from chronic pain patterns. In a world of prescription pads and pills, nothing can take the place of physical touch. Bowen Technique can provide relief for many types of injuries and health problems, both acute and chronic. It does so holistically, via the body's innate healing mechanisms. The treatment delivers

signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves), and the body responds in its own time, within its vital capacity. When indicated, additional myofascial elements are added, addressing chronic connective tissue tension and adhesion. This therapy is appropriate for people of all ages, in all degrees of health, and is adjusted to each unique individual’s need. Rather than focusing on a single complaint, Integrative Bowen Therapy addresses the entire body by stimulating the connective tissue and restoring balance within the nervous system. Many people today live in a constant state of high stress and sympathetic over-stimulation (fight or flight). Healing is promoted with a shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic (rest and digest) dominance. Bowen Technique enables that shift. The goal of each treatment is not to simply mask the sensation of pain, but to help the body more toward a state of improved function. Naturopathic physicians have many tools at their disposal to consider for the treatment and management of chronic pain, all of which have proven clinical effectiveness and minimal risk or side effect. If pain has become a regular part of your every day, consider investigating a different approach to take steps toward a better quality of life! Osteopathic Medicine for Relief from Chronic Pain By David Johnston, DO

C

hronic pain is commonly defined as any pain, which lasts more than 12 weeks. Whereas acute pain is the normal sensation which alerts us to an injury or illness, chronic pain is one that persists, often for months or even longer. Chronic pain can affect as many as eight of every ten American adults. It can be caused by a musculoskeletal injury (involving the bones, muscles, or joints), nervous system dysfunction, chronic diseases, and autoimmune disorders. Do You Suffer from Back Pain? According to research from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, no less than 84 percent of adults in the U.S. will experience chronic back pain at some point in their life. Often occurring in the lower back, the pain may be caused by an injury or develop progressively due to arthritis, osteoporosis, or normal wear-and-tear. Back pain has become an epidemic in the U.S. and is a leading cause of disability and lost productivity in the workplace. Common causes of chronic back pain include: • Slipped or bulging discs, typically caused by twisting or lifting injuries • Spinal stenosis, involving the narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of nerves • Compression fractures commonly associated with osteoporosis • Soft tissue damage caused by strain or trauma to back muscles, ligaments, or tendons • Spinal fractures • Structural deformities such as scoliosis (the abnormal sideways curvature of the spine) or lordosis (the excessive inward curvature of the lower back) Do You Suffer from Headaches? According to research, 50 percent of the adult population will report headaches during the course of a year, while more than 90 percent will report a lifetime history of headaches. A chronic headache is one which occurs for at least 15 days per month for no less than three consecutive months. The most common types of chronic headache are: • Tension headaches caused by stress, fatigue, or sleeping wrong 30

• Eye strain headaches caused when the ocular muscles become strained • Migraines caused by nervous system triggers or hormonal irregularities • Cluster headaches caused by the enlargement of blood vessels in the head Do You Suffer from Chronic Joint Pain? Joint pain is one of the leading types of chronic pain among American adults, typically caused by injury, infection, or advancing age. According to a report from the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, arthritis is the most common cause, affecting over 51 million Americans (or roughly one of every two adults). Some of the more common types of chronic joint pain are: • Osteoarthritis, common in the elderly and usually affecting the larger joints • Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disorder which causes swelling of the joint spaces • Repetitive motion injury, common in athletes and people who do repetitive physical activities • Bursitis caused by swelling of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the joints • Tendonitis caused by the inflammation of joint tendons Do You Suffer from Chronic Nerve Pain? Chronic nerve (neuropathic) pain affects one of every ten Americans, according to a study from the Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. This commonly happens when the nerves are either compressed, damaged, or exposed to drugs which strip their protective exterior coating (called the myelin sheath). Some of the more common examples of chronic neuropathic pain are: • Sciatica, typically caused by nerve compression which triggers a shooting pain down the leg • Diabetic neuropathy, often occurring in the hands or feet • Carpal tunnel syndrome, commonly associated with repetitive motion Postherpetic neuralgia, a type of chronic pain which persists after a shingles outbreak • Trigeminal neuralgia, caused by injury to the trigeminal nerve of the face

Given the invasive nature of many medical interventions for pain, along with the growing opioid epidemic and addiction to pain medications, more people are seeking out natural approaches for managing their pain. Osteopathic Medicine Osteopathic medicine treats the whole patient and addresses the underlying causes of pain and disease. It was discovered in 1874 by Andrew Taylor Still, who was a frontier physician that realized how ineffective and dangerous medicine and surgery were in his day. By spending time in nature and studying anatomy in extreme detail, he realized how the body’s structure and function were related. The first osteopathic school was opened in 1892 in Kirkville, Missouri. Today there are 38 schools across the U.S., and over 100,000 osteopathic physicians in practice, with many in rural and underserved areas. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) complete 4 years of medical school and additional residency training, like their MD colleagues. They are licensed to practice medicine and surgery in all 50 states. In addition, DOs receive extensive training in osteopathic and anatomical structural diagnosis and treatment. Some osteopaths practice a gentle hands-on treatment called OMT (Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment). This helps to align bones and soft tissues and allows nerve, arterial, and lymphatic circulation to restore vitality and healing.

Osteopathic concepts are quite holistic in nature and emphasize the following principles: 1. The human being is a dynamic unit of function; 2. The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms, which are self-healing in nature; 3. Structure and function are interrelated at all levels; and 4. Rational treatment is based on these principles. Cranial osteopathy is a more advanced healing technique that involves gentle palpation and movement of the bones of the skull, the brain, the dural and fascial membranes, the sacrum, and the fluctuation and balance of the cerebrospinal fluid. This enables sutures between skull bones to be released and cranial nerves like the vagus, our major parasympathetic nerve, in charge of the body’s relaxation response, to become more balanced. A typical osteopathic visit may last 60-90 minutes on the first visit and involves a detailed medical and structural history from birth to the present of injuries, lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, emotional stressors, supplements, therapeutic stretching, and relaxation breathing techniques. Then, gentle head to toe, hands-on osteopathic treatment is done to diagnose and treat imbalances in joint alignment, tissue texture changes, and tenderness. The goal is to alleviate inflammation and tissue congestion, which is the cause of the pain. By releasing fascial tension along nerves and lymphatic vessels and opening up venous and arterial circulation, proper oxygen and nutrients are restored to the tissues, while waste products are removed. This rapidly speeds up the healing, reducing pain, improving mobility, and restoring normal function and wellbeing. Also, the very relaxing, cranial-sacral part of the treatment helps to balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic “fight or flight” nervous system, allowing old injuries, shock, and trauma to be treated out of the anatomy very quickly.

Osteopathy can be described as “peeling the layers of the onion,” and it may take up to 5-6 visits until more significant relief is experienced for a pain condition that may have been present for over 10 years. A classic example is an old injury, perhaps from childhood, like slipping and hitting the back of the head. There may be a concussion and whiplash that eventually healed in a few weeks. Then maybe 10 years later, headaches and back pain of a severe degree surface all of a sudden. All the tests, MRIs, and evaluations are inconclusive. Structurally what occurred was the energetic imprint from the shock of the injury is still stuck in the solar plexus, diaphragm, and the sacral bone. The dural membranes in the head and tailbone area can hold onto those kinetic forces that are blocking the normal flow of circulation in the body. Osteopaths can detect these subtle imbalances and treat them so the body can finally heal. There are various therapies that work in conjunction with osteopathic treatment to aid in pain relief including: 1. Laser therapy: such as a Class IV infrared laser, can rapidly reduce pain and inflammation for chronic as well as acute pain from injuries and neuropathic pain. The laser energy is soaked up by the cell’s mitochondria (the energy production centers), and result in a cascade of healing events. 2. PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field therapy): can help with pain and healing injuries. Cells hold a charge across their membranes, and with injury and inflammation that charge can be disrupted. PEMF works directly on the charged particles within the cell to reestablish proper membrane potential, and thereby brings healing and pain relief. Even blood is positively affected with PEMF, as microcirculation dramatically increases.

3. Neurofeedback: can help in pain relief, in that pain itself is experienced in the brain. Neurofeedback is a specialized therapy where a patient’s brain waves are read with an EEG (electroencephalogram), and the patient can learn how to control dysregulated brain wave patterns through a feedback mechanism. Each case is individually assessed and then a protocol is created to help with a variety of different neurological and psychological states, including pain syndromes such as Fibromyalgia, RSD/CRPS, and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

4. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): is a treatment that utilizes oxygen to enhance healing throughout the body. Patients are placed inside a hyperbaric oxygen chamber with an oxygen concentration of 100 percent and the pressure in the chamber is slowly raised between 1.5 to 2 times the normal atmospheric pressure. This allows more oxygen to enter the bloodstream and cerebral spinal fluid. Where oxygen concentration is increased, inflammation is reduced and healing is enhanced. Research, as well as our clinic’s experience, has shown that HBOT has been effective for people suffering from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), fibromyalgia, and peripheral neuropathy. Many of the medications used for pain can have harmful side effects to the stomach and liver, not to mention the addictive nature of opioid substances. There are several good herbal and supplement options for managing pain and inflammation more naturally, without the dangerous side effects. Limiting processed and inflammatory foods and maintaining a balanced gut and microbiome is essential to supporting a healthy body. Detoxification and cleansing type programs can support the body’s inflammatory response by helping it to clear toxins and chemicals. Helpful supplements for pain may include: omega-3 fatty acids, turmeric, ginger, Boswellia, bromelain, glucosamine and chondroitin, magnesium, vitamin D, white willow bark, MSM, capsaicin, vitamin B6, and cat’s claw. Quite often, we use a combination of all of these therapies when helping someone healing from pain. As pain is a very individual thing from one person to the next, the treatment approach needs to be tailored uniquely to each patient. David Johnston, DO is a board-certified osteopathic physician in neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine, and a Diplomate with the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and holds additional certifications in cranial osteopathy. No Medical Explanation for Your Pain? By Derrick Schull, ND

P

sychogenic Pain Disorder (PPD) refers to a person experiencing pain with no medical explanations for the pain. It has other names such as “Pain somatization disorder.” These terms essentially mean, “we can’t find a reason for the pain so it is likely all in your head.” To many, this diagnosis can be quite off putting and offensive. No one wants to be told they are crazy and the pain is all in their head. Often, the referral of pain patients to psychological practitioners is taken as an assault or lack of validation, as if the doctor isn’t really listening. It turns out, there is quite the debate in the scientific community on whether PPD is real or not.

healed. These both suggest that pain is legitimate, had an original source, but persists for some unknown reason. Could it be that PPD similarly had an original source, but the brain/nervous system has gotten stuck in a pain signal loop?

talking about with PPD. In PPD, patients have pain and psychological complaints and there has not been any way to eliminate the pain, so the psych complaints persist.

As you can see, there is quite a web of factors contributing to pain syndromes. From research, it seems reasonable to conclude that pain could in fact be caused by (or exacerbated by) psychological changes. There is clearly evidence supporting PPD as a diagnosis, but figuring out if a patient is misdiagnosed, malingering, exaggerating their pain for sympathy and attention, or has a true psychogenic pain disorder can be a tall order. What’s important is that many people find resolution by exploring alternative methods.

It would also seem there is a big confounding factor when it comes to studying pain. A study on more than 2000 lower back pain patients found that all of those working at the time of initial pain consultations returned to work, with the exception of those in litigation, of whom not one returned to work. These patients have been shown to improve the same amount in pain programs, but still claimed no improvements in quality of life and higher rates of disability. In other Psychological Response to Pain is Normal words, if there is an incentive to be in pain, then pain is experienced worse. It is not clear if this is unintenIf there is an Often when someone is experiencing pain, it is tional, or if there is in fact malingering/faking the pain accompanied by psychological complaints such as incentive to be in to maximize re-imbursement. Can Pain be Caused or Altered by Our Emotions or Other Factors? Scientific studies have shown that people getting placebo pain treatments often feel the pain getting worse. Normally, pain would be experienced as the same or improved in accordance with standard placebo effects. This indicates that there is an expectation or psychological cause behind the experience of pain. Other experiments have used dense sensory-motor blocks to stop extremity pain, to no effect. In these cases, the nerve is completely blockaded against sending a pain signal, yet the patient still experiences pain. In interesting primate studies researchers conditioned monkeys to expect a painful stimulus and saw their brains (with imaging techniques) creating a pain response before any pain stimulus was applied. Meaning they felt pain without any cause aside from they expected to feel pain. We also have research that shows when experimental subjects watch something that induces fear, excitement, or other intense emotions, the parts of their brain that process pain will become active. Furthermore, it is well understood that people who undergo extreme traumas will present with many symptoms, including pain, that have no physical explanation. We can compare PPD to a similar disorder called “phantom pain.” This is where amputees still feel pain in the part of their body that was removed. In these incidences, pain is being generated in the nervous system and has nothing to do with pain from the perceived source. Similarly, there is a theory called “pain memory” where the nervous system retains a pain signal long after the source has been

Natural Therapies for PPD I personally can speak to having great success with all types of pain when utilizing alternative therapies. In my experience, many patients are being labeled inappropriately with PPD, likely because their other practitioners did not have further tools to evaluate and heal pain. I always start by assuming that the pain is real and has a source (even if the brain is the source). If you have this disorder, review your detailed history, including: all injuries, psychological events/traumas, and all past tests. Finding the cause is always number one. The best treatment is always going to be a holistic, individualized approach. Here are the key interventions for anyone suffering with pain (including PPD): • Reduce inflammation: Both pain and psychological disorders are often related to inflammation in the body. It may be that pain and psychological changes occur together and are both a sign of one big underlying issue, and thus both have to be treated together for complete resolution. Correcting the microbiome, gut permeability, and removing food intolerances are essential to any protocol as this will reduce inflammation.

• Use holistic healing systems: Homeopathy and acupuncture are excellent at addressing the mind and body together. Make sure to have these types of practitioners on your healing team. • Low Energy Neurofeedback: This is one of my preferred treatments for difficult to treat pain symptoms. This technology is capable of retraining nerve signals and brain processing of pain signals. I have eliminated pain in many patients utilizing this therapy. • Balance the musculoskeletal system: This usually requires one or more professionals in the fields of physical therapy, chiropractic, naturopathic, craniosacral therapy, massage therapy, or others that can help recondition muscles and bones. Work to strengthen and stretch appropriate muscles can do wonders for reducing mysterious pain. • Photonic stimulation: Low level laser therapies are well researched for reducing pain and inflammation of muscles and joints. Certain devices are capable of calming down nerve conduction to reduce pain. They stimulate mitochondrial activity which hastens healing of the treated tissues. • Seek out a psychologist who specializes in pain disorders: This will, at the very least, help you cope with having chronic pain (which will reduce your experience of it). Best psychological therapies for pain/PPD: operant-behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. • Stay engaged: Pain is down regulated by being distracted. Simply keeping yourself busy will alleviate pain. • Exercise: Well proven to alleviate pain, as long as you are not making it worse. • Hypnosis and PSYCH-K: These work entirely on unconscious beliefs and are great for modulating and reducing pain. Natural Ways to Address Acid Reflux & GERD By Erika Dworkin, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition® "Chronic gastrointestinal (GI) complaints are often treated with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antibiotics, and other medications that offer temporary relief of acute symptoms. Although these drugs are prescribed to provide promising results, new research indicates the drug treatments often mask unresolved physiological problems and cause further complications. Complex GI cases require a comprehensive assessment and a multifaceted approach... dietary guidelines, lifestyle recommendations, and customized nutritional supplementation and herbs." ~ Nutritional Interventions for Gastroesophageal Reflux, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Hypochlorhydria: A Case Report; Integr Med (Encinitas). 2016 Aug; 15(4): 49–53.

A

re you one of the estimated 60 million Americans diagnosed with acid reflux (AR) or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)? Has it greatly complicated your diet, interfered with your sleep, otherwise disrupted your life, or increased your concern about esophageal cancer? Have you found that your prescribed traditional medications have not adequately addressed your symptoms, or do you prefer to address your symptoms with natural remedies? The good news is that evidence-supported and clinically proven nutrients can relieve and even resolve these frustrating and potentially dangerous conditions when combined with dietary and lifestyle changes.

include those characteristic of acid reflux, along with severe chest pain, esophageal ulcers and bleeding, and choking. Barrett’s esophagus is a severe, pre-cancerous complication of GERD. AR occurs when the normally contracted lower esophageal sphincter (LES) malfunctions by relaxing. This muscle between the esophagus and the stomach, which should open only when food travels downward, opens when stomach contents are pushed upward because there is no skin flap to block them. This can also be caused or aggravated by the tightening of the pyloric sphincter at the bottom of the stomach, which normally allows food to move down from the stomach to the small intestine. Factors that can cause AR include: (1) food sensitivities and allergies; (2) bacterial or fungal overgrowth (Helicobacter pylori, SIBO, or candida/yeast); (3) unhealthy lifestyle (smoking, poor diet, unmanaged excessive stress); (4) consuming a large meal, especially before bedtime; (5) consuming high fat foods (fat delays the release of food from the stomach into the duodenum; (6) low levels of stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), especially attendant to aging (controversial); (7) bending over or lying down after eating; (8) pregnancy; (9) overweight and obesity, which create the same effect as pregnancy; (10) a hiatal hernia; (11) taking certain medications, including NSAIDS, antibiotics, bisphosphonates (Boniva®, Fosamax®), asthma, Parkin-

son’s and certain blood pressure medications, certain tranquilizers, sedatives, and narcotics; and/or (12) mineral supplements (magnesium deficiency or iron and potassium intake). Conventional Treatments & Their Disadvantages Traditional medicine calls for the management of acute symptoms of patients with AR, GERD, or Barrett’s esophagus, primarily through the use of proton pump inhibitors that inhibit production of stomach acid (PPIs; Prilosec, Prevacid, Protonix). However, PPIs were initially approved solely for short-term use, there is no defined ideal course of use of PPIs in the scientific literature, and using them may reduce esophageal inflammation but will not prevent AR/GERD. While overprescribed PPIs have generally been thought to have few side effects, more recent scientific evidence has shown their association with various risks and complications, especially with long-term use. Research has proven that the HCL deficiency (hypochlorhydria) caused by extensive use of PPIs (or of even OTC antacids, like Tums or Rolaids, and H2 blockers, like Zantac and Pepcid AC) can be detrimental because stomach acid plays a key role in many physiological processes, including the activation of intestinal hormones, the absorption of important nutrients, and the breakdown of dietary proteins to help prevent food allergies associated with incomplete protein digestion.

Symptoms & Causes of Acid Reflux AR involves the travel of stomach acid (hydrochloric acid/HCL) upward into the esophagus. Symptoms include heartburn (the feeling of acid backing into the throat or mouth), asthma, dry cough, difficulty swallowing, and stomach discomfort. AR is generally not considered a serious health condition until it develops into GERD, characterized by symptoms occurring twice or more every week. While GERD can be labeled either erosive or non-erosive (known as NERD), depending on whether an endoscopy reveals damage to the mucosal lining of the esophagus, its most common threatening symptoms

Although some researchers call for more high quality studies, and maintain that serious adverse effects rarely occur, some studies indicate the association of long-term use (more than one month) with these potential PPI side effects, and thus “judicious use of this medication”: (1) osteoporosis and bone fracture; (2) infection (including H. pylori, SIBO, salmonella, and C. difficile); (3) heart attack; (4) renal disease; (5) dementia; (6) autoimmune diseases; (7) an imbalance of healthy gut bacteria; (8) a reduction in absorption of key vitamins and minerals (folate, B12, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron); (9) rebound excess stomach acid secretion and increased reflux-like symptoms; and (11) excess production of gastrin, which may be associated with an increased risk of stomach cancer. Natural Alternatives With so many potential health problems that can arise from the prolonged use of PPIs and OTC acid suppressors, exploring the natural approaches to management of AR/ GERD is a logical and empowering strategy. 1. Apple Cider Vinegar(ACV) (Unfiltered / Raw/Organic): While no scientific study actually proves ACV is effective against AR/GERD, many swear by its digestive benefits. In mild AR cases, where

stomach acid is too low, ACV is thought to introduce more acid into the digestive tract and to combat various types of bacteria and microbes. The acidity of ACV can, however, upset the stomach and damage the teeth and throat. Although there are various ACV cocktail recipes, one common approach calls for one-tothree teaspoons of ACV in eight ounces of water, with optional honey or stevia, before or after meals, or sipped slowly throughout the day. 2. Alginic Acid Blend: Raft-forming alginates create a temporary, pH-neutral barrier that blocks stomach contents from backing up into the esophagus. As the gummy polysaccharide mixture from brown seaweed expands in the stomach, it also soaks up excess acid. 3. Aloe Vera: In one 2015 randomized controlled trial of 79 subjects that compared aloe to Prilosec and Zantac, researchers proved what many clinical nutritionists have known for years. Namely, in GERD sufferers, aloe may provide a safe and effective treatment for reducing the frequency of heartburn, food and acid regurgitation, flatulence, belching, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and vomiting. Aloe gel, when taken properly, is especially effective in heal-

6. DGL (Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice): Studies have shown that this long-used anti-inflammatory herb combats all aspects of indigestion, including heartburn, regurgitation, loss of appetite/early satiety, upper abdominal fullness and pain, belching, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. It also repairs the intestinal lining and combats all forms of h. pylori bacterial infection, which can cause stomach and intestinal ulcers. Safe for prolonged use and even by those with

4. Astaxanthin: In a 2008 high quality study, researchers determined that 40mg of this potent antioxidant reduced AR symptoms, particularly in subjects with pronounced H. pylori infection. 5. Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda): This stomach acid neutralizer can temporarily relieve heartburn, but prolonged use can make the body too alkaline, cause potassium, chloride, and calcium deficiencies, and produce excess sodium levels relative to water intake. These imbalances can negatively impact respiration, cause heart arrhythmias, and damage the nervous system.

high blood pressure, DGL is generally chewed 20 minutes before each meal. 7. Digestive Enzymes With Betaine HCL & Pepsin: Since low stomach acid is often one underlying cause of AR/GERD, some holistic experts argue that it is important to restore HCL and enzymes that assist with digestion and thus can reduce stomach distension. They recommend slowly introducing a comprehensive digestive enzyme supplement with HCL and pepsin, the main stomach enzyme that breaks down proteins. However, patients taking anti-inflammatory drugs, should not take HCL. 8. Essential Fatty Acids (EPA & GLA): Clinical practice and scientific studies have proven these healthy fats to be especially critical for healing the esophageal lining in cases of GERD and Barrett’s esophagus. 9. Ginger: Clinical practice has primarily proven this spice, when taken in small doses (up to 4g/1 tsp), to be effective against various aspects of indigestion, including AR/GERD. An Unwanted Freedom By Robin Clare, MBA his summer, our precious 15-year-old family dog Hailey made her transition to non-physical. It was a deeply emotional time for our entire family and a monumental loss for me on many levels. Hailey was my constant companion from the moment she arrived in our home to the moment she left. For the first year, she slept under my desk on my foot and on the last weekend of her being at home, I laid on the floor with her and barely left her side.

T

For the past year, I knew her time was near and I kept petting her and looking at her knowing that my shadow would be leaving soon. As her caretaker, I was surrounded by her beautiful energy not only in my personal life but also in my professional life. Hailey would come up to my office to do sessions with my clients and when she couldn’t climb the stairs, I brought my office downstairs to ensure her healer energy was part of the process. Caretaking for Hailey was hard as many of you know who have loved elder dogs. It seemed like my husband and my entire conversations centered around Hailey’s needs from a constant monitoring of her food, her poops, her meds, her movement. Hailey received all the love from both of us that was humanly possible. In fact, I believe we were able to give her better loving then we could give to each other and that worried me. I knew that when Hailey left her physical body, life would be forever changed. There would be an unwanted freedom that my husband and I would need to figure out what to do with as individuals and as a couple. It seems that when you are the care-

taker for a precious loved one, you put a part of your life on hold. For me that was a welcome hold for as an author, Hailey kept me grounded at home to take care of her needs and to write my upcoming book, Feast & Famine. In this present moment, I am now free to expand my career, to travel with my husband, to fix up our home like taking up those old carpets! I never realized how many decisions were on hold and it feels overwhelming at times. If I was advising a client on how to manage this time of loss and freedom, I would share the following: • Feel and express every emotion that you are feeling. It is perfectly fine to cry about losing your precious pet. It is hard to say goodbye to a dear member of your family. • Follow up each sad moment with a funny, goofy experience that you had with your pet. Follow your cry with a good laugh. This is how your pet would want you to remember them. • Express the unconditional love that you share with your fur baby to others. Don’t allow the loss to shut down your heart. Instead, be more loving and share what your fur baby taught you. • Take your time in making decisions that are possible with your new freedom. There is no rush when it comes to making a right decision. Find the balance of heart and mind in your decisions. • Continue to live your life in pursuit of your dreams, in pursuit of your Soul’s desired outcome. When you are ready, get out there in an even bigger way and make your fur baby proud. Our home is quieter but never empty because Hailey’s energy will be forever a part of our very fabric. My plan is to make the greatest impact I can with my unwanted freedom.
