A Letter From the
EDITOR Sometimes you have a vision and that vision doesn’t become reality until you are living it. I have been waiting years to put together a Sports edition that involved kids in the county, but I wanted something original and different so with that being said here it is! I never would have been able to go with the vision I had until I was brought into this lifestyle. I give all that the credit to the Lord. If I would not have married my husband and had two beautiful daughters and married into the Rodeo world I would have never been able to put this vision together. I came from the basketball, softball, track, and cross county sports world, horses was never in rim of things.

Getting to Know Mrs. Becky Harkness
My husband came from the horse sport world. His dad is a Saddle maker who used to rope calves, one uncle is a saddle maker as well, and another one lived the rodeo world riding bulls for years and now team ropes. I know the best of both worlds right? Well that is how this issue came to be, I combined both SPORTS worlds into one and you have got the best of both world right in front of you. I have swapped ends and am now living the rodeo life with my team roping husband and my two beautiful cowgirls. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did putting it together. I’d have to say it might just be my favorite yet! - Leather, Grace, and Lace -

Are You Burning Bridges or Building Bridges? Be careful how you speak and respond to different “authorities” in your child’s life! If you belittle or criticize their teacher, coach, youth or children’s pastor, the umpires officiating their sports events, ballet or gymnastics teacher etc....then what your child learns is that mom and/or dad are the only authority in their life. The problem with that thinking is that ONE DAY, your child/ teen WILL NEED help that YOU cannot give, and if you have burned every bridge between them and other authorities in their life, then they will not get the help they need! Even if those authorities are wrong (and they will be sometimes) you should still find the positive and speak that to your kids! For example: When the umpire makes a bad call, instead of tearing him down, remind your child that “no one is perfect and regardless of this bad call, he/she is still the authority on the field/court, so we have to respect him!”) Build bridges for your children! --

A Little Fearless no time to be scared What do you think of when you think about sports? Is it football, basketball, baseball, track, etc.? Well, let me tell you, Rodeo is a sport, as well. Rodeo is an exciting and sometimes, downright dangerous sport. You are riding an animal that is three times your size. It must be trained constantly to do what you want and need it to do. It takes guts to be able to do it. Rodeoing for young competitors is a total lifestyle that involves commitment from the rider’s whole family. There are a lot of factors that go into this team – your home, the stock (horses, calves, goats, steers) – and the time must be given to it every day. Check out these young athletes in the next few pages from ages four to 19. You will be amazed!

Abi DePriest
C
owgirls are God’s wildest angels; they have cowboy hats for halos and horses for wings. At the age of four, many kids aren’t thinking about getting on an animal that is three times their size. For Abi DePriest, that came nothing short of an opportunity that would last a lifetime.
Abi is a freshman at Carthage High School in Carthage. While some kids get to sleep late in the summertime, Abi’s day begins at 5:30am, when she awakes; or really begins at 8am, when it starts to get toasty in the summer months. Horses have to be worked out and fed every day! Abi has been riding horses since she was three years old, and her first competitive riding events took place when she was four at Pineywoods Youth Rodeo in Nacogdoches and Lufkin. By her own admission, Abi loves both riding and the competition. “I get up every morning to ride,” Abi said. During the school year, the riding is after school and sometimes last until bedtime. Events that Abi has competed in and won over the past years include barrel racing, goat tying, ribbon roping, pole bending, and others.

This past summer, after completing eight grade, Abi traveled to Huron, South Dakota to compete in the national junior rodeo competition in pole bending. Abi shared, “Only the top four in each state get to go to nationals. This year Abi began her freshman year at Carthage High School and plans to continue rodeoing. When asked if she would continue her rodeo career after high school, the everpolite young lady replied, “Yes, ma’am! I want to go to Panola College and be a part of their rodeo team, then, who knows?” And with her

Codi Grace West “Hello! My name is Codi Grace West. I am the 5-year old daughter of Chase and Gabrielle West. I am currently in Kindergarten, where I love learning and playing with my friends at school. I am a member of the Pineywoods Youth Rodeo Association (PYRA). I love riding my horse, Bella, with my daddy; and when I go to my rodeos, my favorite events to do are the goats and the cloverleaf barrels. “I love anything pink and pizza. I am an animal lover and that’s why, when I grow up, I want to become a veterinarian. Then I can help my animals when they are sick. “When I am not rodeoing, I love playing with my little sister, my dogs, Rose and Jake, hunting with Momma and Daddy, playing outside on my trampoline and swing. Best of all, I love looking at beautiful sunsets that God made!”

The Klein Sisters
Lie z a K l e in Lieza Klein, 15-year old daughter of Justin and Tiffanne Klein of Shelbyville, was born in a saddle. Both parents knew this way of life and wanted nothing short of it for their girls. Lieza has been in a saddle since before she could remember, and she has been a part of Pineywoods Youth Rodeo Association (PYRA) since 2013. Prior to PYRA, she attended play day events in Center. When asked what her favorite event is she stated, “ Poles, because that’s what I am best at.”

Rodeo does take a lot of time and dedication, but Lieza is also involved in FFA, JCC, and has done queen rodeo pageants in the past. Lieza is a Sophomore at Shelbyville High School and wants to leave you with these words.
“Rodeo is by far one of the most humbling sports, because when you think you’re doing good consistently, it will remind you not to get to high headed and will shoot you back to the bottom. You just gotta keep on working at it” - Lieza Klein
Lie l a K l e in Liela Klein is the 13-year old daughter of Justin and Tiffanne Klein and the younger sister of 15year old Lieza Klein. “We were first sat on a horse at six or eight Let me tell you, if you have never seen her run poles, you need to make a trip to Lufkin or Nacogdoches to see this girl run the poles, because she is smoking! Lieza participates in High School Rodeo Region 5. When I asked her if she planned on attending college to rodeo, she without hesitation said, “Yes, ma’am, I plan to attend UT or Tarleton University.” Lieza has a younger sister about whom she said, “For the most part we are very encouraging and supportive toward one another, although we may mess with each other saying, ‘Oh, I’ll beat you; or, ‘No, I’ll beat you.” She then said that they are normally very helpful to each other. Mrs. Tiffanne Klein must be amazing at handling everything, I asked if everyone pitched in, since it’s so much, or does mom do most of it. Both girls replied, “Mom.” I mean what would we do without our mothers, right? Rodeo Life is a mixture of humans and horses, so they have to have a lot of attention from their owners. Lieza says she rides her horses and exercises them every day when she get home from school. When a rodeo is approaching, the week of a rodeo, she may run the patterns on her horses prior to the events.

months old with our mother or father,” Liela said. “There was never any question about whether we would rodeo. We were born into the world.” Both sisters began competing at Play Days when they were seven or eight years old. After that, it was a natural progression to begin competing with the Pineywoods Youth Rodeo Association (PYRA). Liela said that her favorite events are poles and goats. Barrels are number three on her events list. She just enjoys the first two more. When not eventing, both Klein sisters exercise their horses by “just riding them,” Liela confided. And they always ride together. Liela is in the school band, which practices late at times. Lieza will wait to until Liela is home from band practice to ride her horse, so they can ride together.

Deakon Kay
H
ello my name is Dekon Duvall Kay. I am the 13 year old of Dawn and Jacob Hutchins and Jessica and Michael Kay. Rodeo is far more than shiny buckles, pretty horses and perfect loops. It’s hard work, dedication, determination, responsibly, frustration, triumph, and
defeat all rolled into one. I countless hours in the practice pen accompanied by lots of sweat, dirt and blisters. Late nights and early mornings tending to horses, weekends spent in confined quarters with your whole family because it is a family affair. It takes the efforts of everyone and I’m so blessed with parents who invest their time and money into me and my love of rodeo. They spend many hours hauling me to practices, clinics, and rodeos, and they are always there to encourage me and push me to be the best that I can be. I have three horses Jake,Bones, and Jessie. My favortie event would be team slingin’ (aka team roping.) My plans after high school are to work in the oilfield and rodeo. When I grow up I plan to own my own business and go pro in rodeo. My favorite song is Straight Tequila by John Anderson. When asked about my favorite food, Steak is by far it. Rodeo has allowed me to make so many friends. I always look forward to the weekends I get to spend time with my rodeo family. I’m so thankful God has given me the ability to rodeo and I’m so blessed with the people he has places in me life to help me fulfill my dreams! Long live Cowboys!! September/October 2019 |
