“The tiny seed knew that in order to grow, it needed to be dropped in dirt, covered with darkness and struggle to reach the light.” ~ Sandra Kring pring’s arrival usually brings the beginning of the growing season, but it feels like this past year has been a growing season for us all. So many things have changed, challenged us and steered us in new directions. We have faced daily reminders that things are just different. It has been hard. But if you’re reading this, you got through this last year—and that’s something we Holly Baker, publisher should all celebrate. We’ve had to change and grow and adapt, and we should be proud of however we’ve managed to make that happen. It has been stressful on us all. This month, we’re bringing you some more food for thought which could help. On page 16, learn about herbs that can help with all that chronic stress. Every little bit helps! In “Healing Mental Health through the Gut”, Sheila Shea explores some ways that our treatment of our guts is reflected in our mental health. There are so many good reasons to listen to our gut. Or maybe we’ve struggled with anxiety? With marijuana now legal in Arizona, cannabis products are gaining even more traction with those seeking relief from anxiety, pain, inflammation and so much more. Pages 22 and 24 include some more interesting resources. Many of us have lost in this last year, so let’s also take a moment to pause and contemplate some ways to heal from that grief. Jasmin Jenkins gives four ways to find peace on page 25, in “Healing from Grief ”. As author John C. Maxwell said, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Happy growing.

Dr. Emily Takeuchi-Miller, at Transformational Medicine, is offering a stress management and resiliency training biofeedback program. Biofeedback is a safe, noninvasive, evidencedbased method to help people develop greater awareness and the ability to regulate their physiology by using signals from their own bodies with the goal of improving their wellbeing, health and performance. In biofeedback, sensors connected to the body provide information in real time about its Emily TakeuchiMiller functioning, such as muscle tension, sweating, temperature, respiration and heart rate. This eight-session training also incorporates breath work, meditation and guided imagery. “In these current times, where each day can seem more tumultuous than the last, it seems words like mindfulness, meditation and self-care are everywhere. But these concepts can seem lofty and at times intimidating. You may be left wondering, ‘Where do I start?’” says Takeuchi-Miller. “Numerous studies have shown that mental and emotional stress can cause physical changes in the body, leading to other health problems. When our nervous system is in a state of balance, the immune system operates better, the body heals faster and we can achieve optimal health and performance.” Takeuchi-Miller uses biofeedback to help retrain a client’s nervous system to be more resilient and produce more helpful responses in the long term, such as: healthy stress coping skills; increases in exercise and restful sleep; positive changes in relational dynamics; reductions in anxiety and depression; and decreases in muscle tension, chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, food cravings and unhealthy eating habits.
t Reverence Personal Training and Movement Therapy, Jason Cummings, a credentialed physical therapist assistant, personal trainer and long-time yoga practitioner, specializes in giving individualized attention to clients. He helps those with common age related conditions such as osteoarthritis along with other post acute and chronic medical conditions causing discomfort and abnormal movement. He is currently offering 25 percent Jason Cummings off the initial consultation fee of $60. It is natural for the human body to experience degenerative changes as we age. Cartilage that allows our joints to move smoothly and sustain force wears down, and osteoarthritis often follows. Our muscles naturally weaken over time. Some muscles shorten due to sustained poor posture common with sedentary lifestyles, while other deep stabilizer muscles become weak. The body can become stiff and weak, leading to dysfunctional movement patterns, poor balance and pain. All of us could use some help along the way in dealing with these very human conditions. “Have you been experiencing pain or maybe feel out of shape and tired? Could you benefit from help with your body in order to feel and move better?” questions Cummings. “Reverence Personal Training is offering individualized fitness programs to fit your needs and aspirations.” The programs incorporate use of strength training, myofascial release and stretching, increasing cardiovascular endurance, balance training and potentially the mind/body integration movement practices of yoga and tai chi. Training is available at a well-suited private therapy space or in-home. For more information, call 520-979-8118 or email JPC2178@yahoo.com. See ad, page 13.
Thai Massage at Home with Hope Huerta
H
ope Huerta, a massage therapist in the Tucson area, has offered massage in grocery stores and hair salons since becoming certified in 2016. Now, Huerta is branching out Hope Huerta and bringing a unique mobile massage experience to local residents, right in the comfort of their own homes. Clients can enjoy the privilege of an immersive massage and enjoy the benefits of Thai massage to their fullest without the added stress of travel. She is offering a special: book two massages in the same month and receive 20 percent off the second massage. Thai massage is a blend of passive stretching and acupressure, which works the entire body using a sequence of movements similar to yoga. Thai massage is an ancient healing practice that originated in India, dating back to around 2,500 to 7,000 years ago. Traditionally performed on the floor, this type of massage provides more access to a wider range of angles to the body, as opposed to a traditional table massage. Being on the floor allows the client to participate more actively in the massage. The therapist can employ deep pressure along with gradual stretches that can help improve a client’s range of motion and flexibility. This might be an aid to those who have been sedentary for some time, but would like some assistance in getting back into the field of activity. For more information or to schedule a massage, call/text 520-248-0590 or email Hopesamusonic@gmail.com. See ad, page 15.

Easy Does It: Reflexology The Inner Unsettled Experience as a Subtle Art The old phrase “no pain, no in an Uncertain Time gain” doesn’t apply to the subtle health briefs
There are real problems out there in our world, but we can’t solve them when we walk around with worries and anxiety in our mind. The inner discomfort and feelings of uncertainty are often more of a problem than the problem itself. We cannot find solutions when all we see is the fearful unknown in our mind. Emotions and worries cloud our mind and even though we may think of ways to calm ourselves, these feelings keep popping up and we continue to circle around with worries, fears, anxious jitters or pain in the body. Negative, worrisome feelings cause the body to contract and go into the fight-or-flight mode. Neither one will be guided by a clear mind. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a simple and relatively quick way to reduce or eliminate the negative worrisome feelings or discomfort. The mind clears up so it can focus on what the real problem is—if there is a problem left to tackle. Bringing a deep sense of relaxation through hypnosis helps the whole process, and our inner wisdom can bring solutions that we had not thought of before. EFT can lead clients to sleep better and longer, and bring some peace to the mind.

aspect of the body. Many people feel that reflexology has to include very deep pressure to be valuable. Consequently, those who could benefit from the subtlety of reflexology might shy away due to the fear of pain. An alternative is a lighter and more subtle approach that offers a rich opportunity for internal body awareness. The older we get, the more we tend to limit our body sense to what hurts and miss the many possibilities of experiencing the vastness and mystery of our personal inner terrain. The gentle articulations of the ankles and toes help the practitioner assess tension and holding patterns while freeing the joint space, reducing pain and allowing more movement potential. Reflexology, working subtly through the nervous system, is deeply relaxing, thereby inducing a slower respiratory rhythm, a slower heart rate, less muscular tension and an increase in blood flow through the visceral and skeletal muscles—along with a more efficient use of available energy. When we are deeply relaxed and tension is released, there is a “waking up”, and an awakened body has many more possibilities, including increased natural movement, less pain and a smoother experience of moving through life. Cheryl Foster, a Nationally Board Certified Reflexologist, has been in practice for 16 years. Her gentle practice, Barefoot Dreams Reflexology, located at 1661 N. Swan, Ste. 254, in Tucson, is now offering a special introductory rate for new clients. Connect at 520-345-4554, Cheryl@BarefootDreams.net or BarefootDreams.net. See ad, page 15.

Breakthrough Pain Treatment: TRT Also referred to as shock wave therapy, Tissue Regenerative Therapy (TRT) is a non-invasive treatment that delivers acoustic waves deep into the tissue to stimulate natural healing. During the treatment, high energy waves create “micro-trauma” that facilitates blood vessel development in and around the treated area. The new blood vessels provide additional passages for oxygen and nutrients to reach the area, which supports regeneration and healing. TRT treatments may also stimulate stem cell regeneration, are used in the treatment of acute and chronic pain and are FDA-approved to treat connective tissue conditions, diabetic foot ulcers, prostate pain and back injury. Other conditions that could benefit from TRT treatments include: Achilles tendon injuries, plantar fasciitis, TMJ, elbow tendonitis, overuse injuries, tinnitus, male and female sexual dysfunction and joint and muscle pain. The treatments usually take from 10 to 15 minutes with little to no downtime, allowing patients to return to daily activity following treatment. Some report benefits up to 12 weeks after treatment. Edge Integrative Wellness, in Tucson, offers Tissue Regenerative Therapy (TRT). Connect at 520-232-3360 or EdgeIntegrativeWellness.com. See ad, page 5.
Microcurrent Medicine: More than Just a Pretty Face Although microcurrent facials have been around for some years, few of us may be aware of the full spectrum of benefits available using this bio-energetic therapy. Most commonly, microcurrent, a non-invasive, low-level electrical current (like the body’s own natural current), is used in anti-aging treatments to lift and tone facial muscles, while boosting collagen and elastin production. In addition to stimulating muscle memory and ATP, another property of microcurrent called iontophoresis, improves blood and lymph circulation and skin care product penetration. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, energetic blockages are the primary causes of physical pain and disease, as well as emotional disturbances. Not surprisingly, since all our basic life functions are directly or indirectly related to electrical activity, past clinical microcurrent research has shown that it effectively increases wound and bone healing, reduces inflammatory body processes and restores healthy nerve function. Recent treatment advances combining microcurrent with color-light or Microlight Electro-Acupoint therapy have demonstrated this vibrational medicine modality’s ability to harmonize the body’s subtle energy fields, namely the chakra and meridian system. Clients treated with standardized, non-invasive Microlight protocols specific for their clinical conditions reported significant and rapid pain reduction, accelerated healing for both acute and chronic conditions, as well as release of deep-seated emotional traumas. Facial and wholebody rejuvenation techniques and nutrition-based weight-loss programs incorporating these vibrational protocols have also shown results. Dr. Suzanne Pear, RN, Ph.D., LE, CQH offers Energy Light Rejuvenation (“whole-body healing disguised as a facial”) at Pampered Skin Studio, located at 5160 E. Glenn St., Ste. 150, in Tucson. Connect at 520-400-8109 or PamperedSkinStudio.com. See ad, page 25. March 2021

Wild-Caught vs. Farm-Raised Seafood Fish and fish products are recognized not only as some of the healthiest foods on the planet, but also as some of the least impactful on the natural environment. For these reasons, it is common practice for medical professionals to recommend that patients only eat wild-caught fish. Wild fish are believed to be more nutritious, while containing fewer toxins. However, if everyone were to eat only wild fish, there would not be enough wild seafood to go around. In fact, demand continues to increase for fish and fish protein, which has resulted in widespread overfishing in wild fisheries. This dilemma would seem to pit individual health over environmental health, and wild-caught over farm-raised seafood. Aquaculture, raising fish in tanks or enclosures, like fish ponds, is a responsible commercial enterprise that often gets unfairly vilified by environmentalists and corporate interests alike. Over the last three decades, aquaculture has been the main driver for increased seafood production. Worldwide, since 2016, aquaculture has been the main source of seafood available for human consumption. In 2018, this share was 52 percent, a figure that is expected to continue to increase in the long term. While recommending wild-caught seafood consumption is a viable health practice, it can be cost-prohibitive economically for some consumers and resource-limited from an environmental perspective. It’s important to recognize that seafood is one of the best protein sources available to humankind and that consuming fish, whether wild-caught or farm raised, has health benefits that far outweigh the risks. A better philosophy, ecologically and economically, is to recommend eating seafood that is responsibly and sustainably harvested and grown. Consumption of wild-caught fish is not always superior to consumption of aquaculture species from a human health perspective. It truly depends on the fishing and farming practices that are employed and regulated in each case. Biologically sustainable fish stocks have declined from 90 percent in 1990 to 68.5 percent in 2017. It is important that we, as a society, start moving those numbers back toward more sustainable levels. Buying and eating sustainably harvested or grown seafood is one of the most powerful actions we can take to preserve our fisheries for our children and their children. Dr. Joshua Reilly, ND, of Wild Wellness Integrative Medicine, recommends that his patients utilize the resources at SeafoodWatch.org in order to select environmentally sustainable seafood, both wild-caught and farm-raised, for their plates. He is not in any way affiliated with SeafoodWatch.org. He values it as evidence-based resource for himself and his patients. Connect at 520-600-0211 or Wild-Wellness.com. See ad, page 17.

Howard Kline 50th Anniversary Art Show Award-winning and nationally collected artist Howard Kline is celebrating his successful 50-year art career with his Anniversary Art Show and Studio Tour on April 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at his studio located at 2826 East Calle Glorietta, in Tucson. “I have a very rich background in all schools of art,” says Kline, who points out that seemingly casual expressionistic works are built on a classical design structure. “My history as a New England Lobster Fisherman, my love for the sea and my rock ‘n roll and jazz drumming have contributed to the inspiration for my work. I describe my collective works as the best of abstraction and the figure. This painting style is borne from the highly emotional Abstract Expressionist moveHoward Kline ment of the 1940s, which has strong emotional content that captures the essence of the moment with intense spontaneity using vibrant color, shapes and forms." After graduating art school, opening his own gallery and spending 45 years painting in New England and California, Kline wanted to be in a less conservative environment and moved his studio to Tucson—“where there are 350 days of sunshine, friendly people and a vibrant art scene.”

Our biofield (energy field or aura) affects our overall well-being, physical health and daily energetic balance. We all experience chronic energetic imbalances, limiting beliefs, energy blocks and relationships that inhibit our health, emotional states and mental environment. The positive about this is that we are then provided an opportunity to work, on a quantum level, with transforming, releasing and processing what may be blocking us from higher degrees of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. Physicists now acknowledge that the universe is completely comprised of energy, with only 4.6 percent “vibrating” slowly enough to be considered physical matter. Thus, we are also mostly energy with our physical bodies being only a small part of us, as human beings. Our DNA is a biophoton machine, a mechanism that responds to the light/ sound outside and inside of us. Not only are we made of light/sound, but we also generate light/sound. Therefore, we can clear and heal our biofield,

assisting physical healing too, with the use of light and sound—i.e., energy. This energy includes our thoughts, feelings, emotions, environment and more. When our biofields and boundaries are healthy, our energy, psyche and spirit are protected from harmful influences such as “energy vampires”. This helps us to balance intimacy and connection with others, while also assisting us in creating health, love, contentment and abundance. Just like our physical body gets dirty and we need to bathe or shower, our biofield gets “dirty” and needs cleaning, too. Everyday life brings people and experiences to us that will inevitably challenge us in both good and difficult ways—and the difficult challenges and people are often the ones that create energetic “dirt”. What weakens our biofield and how do we recognize when we are being unduly influenced by negative energies? Here are some questions and prompts for checking in with oneself. • What are our values? When do people or situations compromise our values? • Do we experience inner conflict? When does this happen? • How much of ourselves do we give up to support others? • Are we absorbing other peoples’ consequences, engaging in “savior behavior”? • Are we able to remain in a neutral state as much as possible—and when we get triggered, witness ourselves in order to create distance from the emotional reaction? For a healthier biofield, we may try these simple suggestions. Breathe deeply, move slowly and breathe some more. Spend more time outside, consciously connecting with nature. Speak up—truthfully, considerately and directly, if possible. Be kind to the self and others. Take time to eat well, get enough sleep and move the body. Danielle L. hronic stress keeps cortisol levels elevated, adversely affecting health over time and, in many cases, diminishing our ability to respond adequately to stress. It is essential to our health and stress resilience that our HPA axis functions soundly and stays in balance. Adaptogens are nontoxic substances (typically from herbs) that enhance stress tolerance and resilience, helping the body and brain resist the negative effects of stress and continue functioning optimally during intense, prolonged or chronic stress. They are called adaptogens because they have the ability to influence physiology in both directions—to heighten and to dampen as needed to maintain homeostasis and adapt optimally. Adaptogens
have a stress-protective effect on the cells, with specific beneficial effects on mental and physical performance and endurance, energy, mood, hormone balance, stress resilience and overall health.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) One of licorice’s major benefits for people experiencing chronic stress is its ability to preserve cortisol, the main stress hormone essential for energy, by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down cortisol into its inactive form, cortisone. This enhances cortisol activity and potentiates aldosterone, an adrenal
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) In scientific studies, ashwagandha has demonstrated the ability to moderate anxiety and the feeling of being stressed and fatigued, enhance alertness and short-term memory, lighten mood, increase motivation and physical endurance, promote sound sleep and help alleviate fatigue during stress. Its antioxidant activity and capacity to help curb inflammation and counter the immunosuppressive effects of stress help protect glands and organs, including the brain, from chronic stress.
Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) Scientific studies have demonstrated eleuthero’s ability to: help maintain healthy adrenal

and thyroid gland weight and function during stress; protect cells and the nervous system from toxins, oxidative stress and inflammation; boost physical and mental endurance and ability to rebound from stress; alleviate fatigue; increase work/ exercise capacity and performance; heighten attention; and enhance sleep, mood and immune function under stressful and/or fatiguing conditions.
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Recent research has supported maca’s ability to promote optimal HPA axis function and homeostasis during chronic stress. These actions have stress-protective effects on the whole endocrine system that promote hormonal balance and energy in stress and menopause. Maca has also shown to act as a neuroprotective antioxidant with the capacity to inhibit stress-induced oxidative damage, boost mitochondrial respiratory function and protect cells, with consequent benefit to cognitive function and memory formation. Through enhancement of brain noradrenaline and dopamine, and up regulation of energy, it also positively influences mood. In addition, maca has been shown to help counter stress-caused disruptions in lipid and sugar metabolism and boost physical endurance in stressful conditions. Gut-Brain Relationship In Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health through Diet, Gottschall documents the causes and cures of IBD in 1986. She noticed nervous system disorders disappeared when the diet was followed. Mental symptoms disappeared first, then physical. SCD and GAPS are known to heal intestinal inflammation and neurological disorders, including autism, Alzheimer’s and eating disorders. In intestinal inflammation, the current thin layer of epithelial cells on the gut wall is ruptured and leaking in most people. The ruptured epithelial cells allow lumen intestinal contents into the blood, to be circulated and to affect the brain. The brain is a large fatty organ of the nervous system that has tremendous energy needs. When the gut is fed well, the brain begins to heal. The gut contains the enteric nervous system within its four muscular layers. The enteric nerves allow gut muscles to develop peristalsis, the natural muscle movement of the intestines. The gut needs to perform well for the brain to do so.
Healing Mental Health through the Gut

ental illness is reversible, and one can heal through nutrition and coping skills. Mental health encompasses social and emotional behavior. Here, we’ll focus more specifically on three mental health issues: Alzheimer’s disease, autism spectrum disorders and eating disorders. When the gut heals, the mind heals. That’s what both Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride and Elaine Gottschall found in their studies and case histories. The focus of Gottschall’s nutritional healing is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and her program, the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). One of her daughters had ulcerative colitis, a form of IBD. Campbell-McBride developed the gut and psychology syndrome (GAPS) to heal her son, who was autistic. She has since published several books, including Gut and Psychology Syndrome, and last year, Gut and Physiology Syndrome. Dr. Dale Bredesen, author of The End of Alzheimer’s: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline, found through research and clinical practice that Alzheimer’s is reversible. His protocol is called ReCODE and uses SCD to promote healing. It attributes Alzheimer’s to three metabolic and toxic threats: inflammation (from infection, diet); suboptimal levels of nutrients, hormones and other synapse-supporting molecules; and toxic exposures (metals and microbes such as mold). In ReCODE, healing the gut is a priority. 18

Influence of Hormones The hormone insulin stores fat and prevents fat burning. Predominantly, people burn glucose, however, the body has the ability to burn fat. The goal is to open both pathways and develop metabolic flexibility and potential. Insulin and glucose have to be low to allow fat burning and the formation of ketones that feed the body. The brain thrives on ketones and utilizes ketones more efficiently than glucose. Ketosis is the process in which the liver produces ketone bodies by breaking down fat. Develop metabolic flexibility, by utilizing both pathways. Raise serotonin and rebuild the happy pathway by cooking and coping. Ideally, open all energy pathways in the body.
The 4 Cs Are we in control of our executive function and decision making when we eat processed foods? Are we biochemically controlled by processed food? According to Dr. Robert Lustig, we are. raise the hormone serotonin, rather than dopamine, cortisol and insulin. Serotonin is the happiness hormone. The 4 Cs give us a guideline to heal mental imbalances by developing essential life skills. Developing coping and cooking skills are the goal of this article. People get their mental health under control when they get their nutrition under control and eat real food. Ultra-processed food is phased out and eliminated.
When the gut is fed well, the brain begins to heal. The gut contains the enteric nervous system within its four muscular layers. Coping Skills and Techniques Get into action, even if the action is meditation. Breathing techniques can drive away impurities of the body and of the mind. Get moving and enjoy playing outdoors in the sun. Likewise, be sure to rest. Live within natural circadian rhythms. Another helpful technique is to stimulate autophagy, an internal natural process that removes accumulated waste in the cells and organs, including amyloid, and recycles or eliminates old waste components. Fasting for 12 to 16 hours daily induces autophagy. We can develop cooking and coping skills to heal mental illness. Lower insulin and glucose to allow both glucose and fat burning metabolism. Heal inflammation of the gut wall using real food, SCD, GAPS and ketosis.

Psychic Services Provide Insight in Tucson by Katta Mapes
M
ost all of us would like to know the future—and nobody knows for sure—but one place that could help us find out a little more is a local psychic fair. There, we can find a plethora of skilled intuitive arts practitioners. These people have honed their skills using a variety of tools for reading, energy healing and clearing, plus other forms of applied
insight designed to provide psycho-spiritual assistance. One such fair is the Tucson Metaphysics Fair (TucsonMetaphysicsFair.com), held on Oracle Road near Orange Grove on the third Sunday of the month, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry into the fair is free. Each vendor sets their own charges for their services. Guests who come to a psychic fair usually find vendors in tables set up around the room. Usually, these guests walk around the room to get a feel for who is there and what they do, then they choose the intuitive artist they want to meet. Guests who have come before may choose

to go directly to a particular vendor they have met before. Popular vendors often have a sign-up list. Common intuitive arts tools that vendors share are mediumship, Tarot readings, dowsing, gemology, astrology and numerology. Some also offer various means of energy healing. These arts are based on the belief that people are made of energy. Sometimes their energy or vibes need to be cleared or balanced with the help of a skilled healer. Elvia Martinez, such a healer, sets up a massage table at the Tucson Metaphysics Fair where she offers reiki and other energy healing techniques. Her methodology is eclectic as she blends her knowledge of shamanism, gems and essential oils with energy balancing for a holistic approach to helping people feel better. “I am constantly in search of myself and this search has led me to different, nontraditional, holistic techniques which focus on opening your heart so that you can arrive to the totality of who you are,” says Martinez. A skilled psychic often provides new insight and information for guests to consider. As we have moved into a new year, Mollie Chivington, owner of Mystic Candles and frequent vendor at the Tucson Metaphysics fair, offers this insight into 2021: “2020 has been the year where we have been forced to stop and reflect on what we are doing; we got to notice what we want and don’t want in our lives. 2021 will give us a forward movement for us in careers and life path that are more aligned with our true-life purpose.” Other popular psychic fairs in Tucson are the monthly fair at the Tamara Spiritual Center (TamaraSpiritualCenter.com) and the Mystic Messengers (MysticMessengers. biz). Larry Martin, astrologer and organizer for the Mystic Messengers fair, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Tucson Reid Park, is hopeful that this fair will start up again in 2021. Right now, restrictions by the City of Tucson won’t allow the fair to meet. Treatments Available for Lost or Missing Teeth by Michelle Bense
T
ooth decay, gum disease and injury are common causes of tooth loss, however, some genetic factors may cause individuals to be born without certain teeth. Regardless of the underlying cause for missing teeth, there are different treatments available to replace a lost or missing tooth. “Our teeth are designed to work together, so missing teeth can impact speech and eating, and over time can cause other problems,” explains Dr. Elahe Wissinger, of E Dental Solutions, in Tucson. “It may become harder or uncomfortable to chew food, which often leads to only eating on one side of the mouth or having to eat at a much slower pace. This affects jaw and facial muscles, which can change the shape of the face, as it can cause the mouth to shift in order to accommodate.” Also, our bite might change to make up or compensate for lost teeth, and the remaining teeth may shift and move, given the extra room. This can cause other issues such as tooth sensitivity, tooth grinding and difficulty chewing. There is no reason to let that happen. Advances in dentistry have made it possible to fill the spaces with bridges, implants or partials that are more functional and attractive. Wissinger can advise patients on which option is best for them
after considering the state of their teeth, gums and jawbone, as well as their overall health. An implant is usually the preferred option for replacing a single tooth or when several teeth are missing in different areas of the mouth. An implant requires careful planning. Wissinger will evaluate with diagnostic x-rays and a CT scan to see if a patient has enough bone to support the implant. If not, bone grafts may be considered. Wissinger’s technology creates a model to simulate the implant before performing the actual procedure. This allows her to create a custom-made surgical guide to improve the accuracy of placement and minimize the amount of tissue disrupted during the implant procedure. The next step is to place the implant, which is a titanium screw and serves as a replacement for a tooth root. During the next several months after the procedure, the bone will grow around the implant to firmly anchor it in place, and the gums will heal. According to Wissinger, once the implant is steadfastly in place, an abutment and a porcelain crown designed to match surrounding teeth will be placed. Implants resemble the natural teeth nearby. Another option is to do a bridge. This consists of at least three porcelain crowns fused together, bridging the gap to replace
missing teeth. The more teeth being replaced, the more natural teeth are needed to give the bridge the necessary support. Getting a bridge is a shorter process than getting an implant, but still requires several visits. One visit is for imaging and impressions, preparing the supporting teeth for crowns and fitting a temporary bridge; a second visit is for trying on the permanent bridge; and a final visit is for cementing or bonding the permanent bridge. To ensure longevity of a bridge, it must be kept clean, especially the area underneath the bridge. Finally, Wissinger may suggest partials or dentures for someone needing to replace some or all of their teeth. Those who only need to replace some teeth might be a candidate for a partial denture. The existing natural teeth will stabilize and hold the removable partial denture in place; sometimes clasps that adjoin to natural teeth are needed for support. The base will be designed to match the color of one’s gums, and the teeth the color of their natural teeth. Some people might find partial dentures different or uncomfortable until they adjust to wearing them. Dentures must be removed and cleaned daily, and are also removed before bed. This constant handling can make them more susceptible to damage. A fixed partial denture supported by implants, either removable or not, is also another option for treatment. “Now is the time to avoid any additional, future issues that can be caused by missing teeth. I can restore a patient’s smile and improve their dental and overall health,” says Wissinger. Elahe P. Wissinger, D.M.D. practices at E Dental Solutions, located at 2504 E. River Rd., in Tucson. Hemp-Derived Cannabidiol A Primer on the Latest Research by Sandra Yeyati
E
ver since the Farm Bill of 2018 legalized the commercial production of hemp, U.S. sales of cannabidiol (CBD) have exploded onto the scene with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of vendors popping up around the country. CBD, a cannabinoid, is abundant in the hemp flower. “By law, hemp is defined as a variety of cannabis plant that has less than 0.3 percent THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid that induces a high,” says Shannon Livingston, a cannabis consultant for Florida Gulf Coast University, in Fort Myers.
Proven Benefits of CBD:
“The enthusiasm for CBD is soaring above the actual scientific evidence,” says Peter Grinspoon, M.D., a leading medical cannabis expert and primary care physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. “What’s known is that it helps with childhood epilepsy, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a CBD drug for that. It is believed, and there’s good animal data and some human data to suggest, that CBD helps with chronic pain, insomnia and anxiety.”
Anxiety Under Study:
A clinical trial examining a high-CBD, low-THC (the psychoactive component) sublingual custom formulation for patients with moderate to severe anxiety is being conducted by Staci Gruber, Ph.D., director of Marijuana Investigations for Neuroscientific Discovery at McLean Hospital, in Belmont, Massachusetts, and associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “In the open label phase of this study, we’ve seen a rather dramatic and precipitous drop in symptoms of anxiety and depression after four weeks of treatment. We’ll see if this holds in the doubleblind phase, which is underway now,” she explains.
Entourage Effect:
Gruber notes that this customized formulation is a full-spectrum, whole-plant formula, saying, “You often seem to get a bigger bang for the buck using a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum (whole plant minus THC) product, rather than just a single extracted compound.” The process she’s describing is called the entourage effect—an assumption that all elements of the cannabis plant, working together, are most effective. “I believe there’s a significant role for terpenoids, flavonoids and other cannabinoid constituents of the plant, in addition to the big two (THC and CBD), and I have a grant to look at that very question,” she says.
How to Start CBD:
Experts agree that the best approach is to start low and go slow. “With experimentation, the patient will know what works for them,” Grinspoon says. “When CBD doesn’t work with my patients, the next step is to add a little bit of medical cannabis; it often takes a very little dose to help them with their sleep or their chronic pain.” Medical marijuana has been legalized in 36 states and the District of Columbia.
Route of Administration:
“When you smoke or vape, it’s an almost immediate onset, which is helpful for breakthrough pain, nausea and anything you want to treat immediately, but the effect is very short-lived,” Livingston explains. “For chronic pain, you might take a capsule or the patch that will last six to eight hours. If you want to fall asleep, a sublingual will work. For a skin condition, you might rub an oil on your skin. It’s really about the time of onset, how long you need it to last and what you’re treating.”

Ensuring Quality Control:
“Choose CBD providers that are certified for good manufacturing practices; conduct batch-specific, third-party testing on all of their products; and provide certificates of analysis directly from those labs. These tests can detect the presence of heavy metals, bacterial or microbial life, mycotoxins and pesticides, and also provide cannabinoid potency and terpene profiles,” says Grace Kaucic, senior communications and content manager at Bluebird Botanicals, a CBD company in Louisville, Colorado.
Our Built-In Cannabinoids:
In the mid-1990s, researchers discovered the endocannabinoid system of receptors and neurotransmitters throughout the body, which uses cannabinoids that our own bodies produce. “This system is believed to control homeostasis, the body’s ability to regulate itself and maintain normal functioning,” Grinspoon says, adding that he believes this system will become central to medicine over the next few years as more research is conducted.
Research is Ongoing:
“It’s an incredibly exciting time for cannabis science,” Gruber says. “There’s every reason to be optimistic about the potential of harnessing and exploiting the benefits of cannabis and cannabinoids in ways that may still surprise us, but to be cautiously optimistic. It is not a panacea. It will never be one-size-fits-all.” Sandra Yeyati, J.D., is a professional writer. Reach her at SandraYeyati@gmail.com.

Benefits of the Medical Marijuana Card
LEGAL MARIJUANA IN ARIZONA by David Yrigoyen
N
ow that cannabis is legal in Arizona, there are a few things to know before experimenting, and a few reasons why we should obtain our Medical Marijuana card if we want to use cannabis as an alternative. Cannabis has been helping people find relief from various ailments for thousands of years. In fact, it has been documented that cannabis has been around for over 6 million years, and a recent discovery can date cannabis’s existence back to over 20 million years. With that being said, here are a few things to know before jumping into using cannabis.
Intro to MMJ Be mindful of dosing. Cannabis can be safely consumed—and one of the safest substances on this planet—when used correctly. It can be very easy to over-consume cannabis, especially when ingesting it in 24

edible form, so it is recommended to start low and work our way up. For a new user, the best dose to start with is 1mg to 2.5mg of THC in edible form; monitor feelings after about an hour. For inhalation, start with one or two puffs and wait an hour to notice any feelings. A new user should not exceed 5mg of THC in one serving, unless there is a previous tolerance buildup from prior use, or from other medications (some medications will give a person a higher tolerance for cannabis). Quality control is important. Some dispensaries will rush out product just so they can sell it. Check to make sure that the cannabis is fully cured and dried (not wet or musky smelling). It is similar to purchasing fruit. Nobody wants the discolored, bruised or under-ripened fruit. Cannabis is no different. Lead with the eyes and nose—if it doesn’t look or smell good, look for other options.

Having a Medical Marijuana card in Arizona comes with some perks. Patients may purchase and possess up to 2.5 ounces of medicine every two weeks. The recreational program (without a Medical Marijuana card) will only allow consumers to purchase and possess up to 1 ounce, with no more than 5 grams of concentrates or extracts (MMJ edibles will also be limited to a maximum of 10mg of THC per package). When purchasing at local dispensaries, recreational consumers are now taxed at 16 percent. All recreational users are subject to this exercise tax, whereas medical patients are not. To the patient’s benefit, the Medical Marijuana consumer tax is currently 8.2 percent. There are also less strict age limits imposed for those in need of the Medical Marijuana card. Other benefits may include line jumping, special purchasing hours, access to different products, job security and more. HEALING FROM GRIEF
Four Ways to Find Peace by Jasmin Jenkins
kissedbythegods/Pexels.com
W
hen I was 13, my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At 15, I was at her graveside, navigating my first experience with the other side of love: loss. Ten years later, my beloved and only brother died tragically as a result of PTSD and untreated addiction. In a word: suicide. Where my mom’s death silenced me, my brother’s death pushed me into a deep pursuit of healing. In the nine years since then, I have committed to discovering the light side of grief, to identifying and embracing the invitations that lay within its deep layers. What I’ve come to learn is that grieving is actually a renewal state—a cycle of releasing and reconnecting. The tears and sadness are, quite literally, just a more fluid connection to love. These are the four invitations I’ve found within the grief:
1
The invitation to pause: When someone we love dies, our
whole world changes in an instant and forever. And with this disruption, there is an opportunity for sacred inquiry that arrives as we pause and honor the absence of our loved one: the impressions they made on our lives, what we will miss about them, how we will continue to celebrate their lives and what their story taught us.
2
The invitation to connect with our breath: With the intensity
of emotions surrounding loss, breath can serve as our anchor. Simply remembering to close our eyes and breathe allows us to stay grounded in our body, mind and spirit. In the TED talk “Breathe to Heal,” Max Strom explains how certain patterns of breathing can actually change how we feel.
3
The invitation to feel: Elizabeth Kübler–Ross taught us about
the five stages of grief, but since everyone’s story and process is so unique, there is ultimately no linear order of the stages. If an emotion arises, allow for it. Feelings, after all, are just information about the state of our heart. The more we can give ourselves permission to be with where we are in our grief, the more at peace we will be in our process.
4
The invitation to heal: Healing is a verb requiring action and
commitment. We have to allow for the pain to heal, also remembering that in doing so, we must keep our hearts open. We have to ask for help when healing, because most of us can’t heal in isolation. Therapists who specialize in grief, online grief courses, bodywork and support groups can help us move forward. Zen Buddhism reminds us that the obstacle is the path. By exploring these invitations, we arrive at the truth that grief is actually a sacred pathway into a deeper connection within our hearts. Jasmin Jenkins is a Los Angeles-based integrative grief guide and the founder of Fall Up, which supports people navigating the spectrum of grief. Learn more at WeFallUp.com.

viduals, companies, schools, teams or any group seeking to codify their rules to live by must first establish core values. The emphasis is on humanity, the way to treat others, and how one should always offer the best they’ve got. His book has condensed the Bureau’s process of preserving and protecting its core values into what he calls “The Seven Cs”. Figliuzzi posits that, “If you can adapt the concepts of Code, Conservancy, Clarity, Consequences, Compassion, Credibility and Consistency, you can instill and preserve your values against all threats, internal and external.” A sought-after speaker, analyst and instructor on topics including leadership, violence prevention and risk management, Figliuzzi earned a Juris Doctorate cum laude from the University of Connecticut School of Law, and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Fairfield University.
Speaking Frankly with Frank Figliuzzi:
THE FBI WAY by Suzie Agrillo
F
rank Figliuzzi is more than an FBI special agent—he has earned the status as an FBI legend. Figliuzzi served 25 years in the FBI, rising up the ranks to the top echelon. His assignments included the high-level position of Assistant Director charged with leading the Bureau’s famed Counterintelligence Division, and he’s an expert on domestic and foreign terrorism. We caught up with Figliuzzi and talked about his venturesome life, the tenets of his new best-seller, The FBI Way, and what he’s doing to make a difference. “My life has been quite an adventure,” says Figliuzzi. Fortunately, he has written a riveting book which memorializes his life at the FBI, sharing this unique adventure for the reader to enjoy vicariously. Figliuzzi is a first-rate storyteller, and The FBI Way is a book that is exactly right for this moment in history. It is a memoir that demonstrates how to incorporate the essential FBI values he is so passionate about into our own lives. Figliuzzi’s unique role in the FBI gave him an ideal opportunity to study patterns of conduct among high-achieving, ethical individuals. Using his experience, he can draw conclusions about why, when and how good people sometimes do bad things. As Keeper of the Code, appointed the FBI’s Chief Inspector by then-Director Robert Mueller, Figliuzzi was charged with overseeing sensitive internal inquiries, shooting reviews and performance audits. It was his responsibility to ensure each employee met the Bureau’s exacting standards of performance, integrity and conduct. According to Figliuzzi, all good codes of conduct have one common trait: they reflect the core values of an organization. Indi26

FBI stands for Fidelity, Bravery and Integrity. What three words describe you best?
Well, I know that I try to live those three words of the FBI motto as best I can, but since we’re all human, that motto is often more aspirational than reality. More personally, if I may play on the FBI theme, I guess I’d say that I’m Funny, Blessed and Intense.
Can you name someone who has had a big impact on you as a leader?
This gets interesting, because most people might respond to this question with someone who served as a positive leadership role model, while others might cite someone who exemplified how not to lead people. But I had a boss once who was both. He was incredibly experienced, taught me how to anticipate all aspects of decision-making, or as we say, to “see around corners”, and his command of the details and his insistence on accountability caused me to be a better manager and leader. Yet, because he did not suffer fools, this same person could exhibit extremely harsh treatment and disdain of anyone who didn’t meet his standards. His lack of the softer skills served as a reminder that a great leader needs to be multifaceted and compassionate.
How do you deal with difficult people?
I’ve been through multiple assessments and coaching both in the FBI and in my corporate career after I retired from the Bureau. The FBI assessments taught me a lot about myself, but the corporate coaching taught me how to understand others—what motivates them, how to interact with people that you find difficult. This involves attempting to “read” and classify others into certain “types” so that you can better understand how best to successfully work together. Most people are a combination of classifications—such as “Driver/Analytical” (that’s me). That means they push hard and demand data and updates; so the best way to keep that person happy is to feed them details and regular progress milestones before they ask. Others might be “Creative/Emotive”—that person may consistently come up with ideas that are so off-the-charts that their ideas consistently get rejected, which causes them to inject

drama into the office. When dealing with that person, you need to listen carefully, respect their ideas, then ask a lot of questions about how they envision each step of implementing their idea. For example, “Bob, thanks for the creative idea. Help me to see this vision through to completion. How might we all learn to safely rollerblade around the office?”
The FBI Way is on sale anywhere you buy books. Online, you can order it from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and others. It’s also available in eBook and in Audible versions.
Do you have any projects on the horizon that you’d like to share?
What is the most significant change you brought about in an organization?
I have a podcast in the works that will be unprecedented in its nature.
The chance to have some greater impact beyond what’s right in front of you is perhaps the strongest reason for leaders to pursue the next level up from their current role. I give a couple of examples of this in my book. One is the role I played behind the scenes in helping get Congress to pass the Federal Trade Secrets Act. Before that happened, there was no law that adequately addressed the financial impact on a business or industry that had its intellectual property stolen. On the “people” side of things, I was instrumental in changing the Bureau policy on how the
complexity of death benefits were communicated to family members after an FBI agent passed away. It had been relatively cold and impersonal, and largely a paper game. Now it is in person by a benefits specialist who travels from FBIHQ.
What suggestions do you have to help unify our country?
I wrote a whole column on that! I write a regular column for MSNBC Daily—their digital platform. You can read that column at tinyurl.com/PostElectionDialogueMSNBC.
What is your favorite quote?
The first line in my book, a quote by Edmund Burke: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” It has governed my career and my life. Suzie Agrillo is a freelance writer in Tucson and a frequent contributor to Natural Awakenings Magazine. She focuses on writing about the arts, inspirational people and the human connection. Dental Insurance, Is It Worth It? Medical insurance, more often than not, saves you money in the long term. Dental insurance, however, works a little differently. • On average, most Americans pay about $400 a year or between $15 to $50 per month for dental insurance. • Most plans come with a “maximum annual benefit”. This limit usually is $1000 per person. (A figure which hasn’t changed since the 1970’s). • With inflation, dental insurance plans should cover between $4000 to $8000 a year, according to MarketWatch.com. Unlike medical insurance, (which covers costs after you reach your deductible,) dental insurance cuts off coverage after their payouts reach the annual limit. Once you pay for the initial deductible, the coverage kicks in. The insurance provider pays a percentage of your dental costs after they have approved the procedure. Anything above or beyond your maximum annual coverage will be the sole responsibility of the insured. In addition, to your benefit being limited to a maximum, you may also be trading away the ability to pick your dentist of choice and location. Orthodontic coverage for braces or Invisalign treatments often have an age maximum and provide coverage for dependent children until the age of 18. Some insurance providers may not cover Invisalign at all. Invisalign, (a removable orthodontic braces treatment), is considered by some insurance providers as cosmetic treatment and therefore not covered under the plan. Keep in mind your insurance policy might approve an “alternate benefit” to some procedures (such as mercury fillings instead of the standard tooth colored fillings). Mercury is considered a neurotoxin, which when placed in the mouth, can then be released into your lungs and travel to other parts of your body including your brain. Another approved “alternate benefit“ is the replacement of a missing tooth by a bridge instead of an implant. Many insurance policies have a “missing tooth clause”, which won’t provide any coverage to replace a tooth that was already missing prior to your policy’s effective date. If the tooth loss happenes after the policy’s effective date; the treatment of choice is to replace with an implant. This will help maintain bone levels, provide an individual tooth without the need to grind adjacent teeth, and provide better bone support to teeth adjacent to the extraction site. In some cases ,where an implant is not possible, we resort back to a bridge but the decision MUST remain that of the insured and not the plan provider. Dental Insurance companies take the power away from their clients to decide their own treatment and dictate what treatment the person should get to minimize the company’s payout even at the risk of greater health issues. My recommendation is to set aside money to be paid to the insurance company every month, in a separate account, and gain the freedom to make your own decisions about your mouth, products and treatments that are the best and safest for you.
