Celebrate Yourself with Jaime Lawhorn Photography
F
Gut health is the key to overall health.
ine art photographer Jaime Lawhorn does portraits that are more than just a portrait—they are art. Her portraits are created in collaboration with the client, where creativity is the only limitation. These are not typical portraits, but rather artistic and painterly, using light to create drama and mood. “When was the last time you had your portrait taken? Chances are, it has been a while. Portraits last more than a lifetime and are irreplaceable to your family members,” explains Lawhorn. “It’s time, celebrate yourself in this moment.” The experience begins with an in-person consultation where creative juices flow, discussing how the client would like to be photographed and what their final images will look like, including concept, wardrobe and props. The second meeting with Lawhorn is the portrait session, which includes professional hair and makeup. Once images are completed, clients are invited to an in-person reveal. Lawhorn is an artist first and wants everyone to see the beauty in themselves and create art. For more information, visit JLawhorn.art.

Time for Something Different with Alexcis Lopez
A
lexcis Lopez, Amazon best-selling author of From Anxious to Awesome and founder/owner of A Transformative Touch Wellness Center since 2006, does things a little bit differently. As an ordained minister with a master’s in Metaphysics, multiple certifications in Clinical Hypnotherapy, NLP life coaching, Shame Therapy, Inner Child Therapy, bodywork, energy therapies and many years’ experience in shamanic practices, Lopez has a lot of diverse knowledge to pull from. Lopez’s own healing journey was a meandering path. Along the way she realized that to effect true, lasting healing we must Alexcis Lopez engage all of ourselves—the conscious, unconscious and heart minds. Unable to find a modality that addressed all three, she created her own practice that doesn’t fit the usual therapeutic molds but pulls from many of them. The backbone of her healing model is an overarching philosophy called The Art of Being Self Centered. Being self-centered is not to be confused with being selfish. Being self-centered is a practice of five principles: awareness, responsibility, respect, imperfection and unconditional living. Using these five principles and associated tools, she created a therapy called Regressive Emotional Shame Eliminating Trance Therapy (RESET). Using RESET, Lopez helps her clients gain emotional-mental clarity and insightful self-awareness, create healthy boundaries, improve relationships, break negative patterns, heal past trauma, reclaim self-worth and expand consciousness. Lopez works with people in several ways: she offers private sessions using RESET both in person and remotely, leads Ayahuasca retreats to Rocky Point, Mexico, offers cacao and kava ceremonies, journey and meditation circles and Being Self Centered workshops. or several years, GE Computing and Internet Services has provided its CleanupSpeedup-Update service, which involves owner Don Gibbens working with clients when they have problems with their computer systems. After watching clients try to navigate through the thickets of problems in their systems, Gibbens has decided that most people need to have help available not just as needed, but continuously. “Why continuously? Because one needs to have the peace of mind knowing that everything that can be done to keep their computer systems healthy is being done,” explains Gibbens. “For those who subscribe to Total Computer Health, we will provide to you the benefit of knowing that your systems are being taken care of. There will be reports on the computer’s health and we will have the ability to monitor so that, should you be attacked, we will be able to meet it head-on. Often, that will be before you even know there is a problem. The Total Computer Health Service will also make entire image backups on a periodic basis so that, if a hard drive crashes, the system and data can be recovered.” The Total Computer Health package will include: managed antivirus, patch management, web protection, remote monitoring, backup and recovery, image backup, mobile device management, remote access, cross platform support, risk intelligence and support consultations. The package costs $100 for the initial setup in the first month, then $35 each month after that. Eco-Friendly Outdoor Eating Rawpixel.com/Shutterstock.com
Save Resources, Reduce Food Waste and More
Midsummer is prime time for outdoor family meals, barbecues and picnics. Selecting the healthiest food, along with eco-friendly materials in preparing for the fun feasts, can fulfill a more environmentally sustainable lifestyle and conserve resources at the same time. n GreenAmerica.org recommends using organic cloth, reusable mesh or string produce bags when grocery shopping; use bamboo utensil sets and plastic straw alternatives made of stainless steel, food-grade silicone, bamboo or glass. n To keep uninvited flying pests like mosquitoes, flies and the like away from humans and food, apply natural repellents—many made of natural, essential oil; plant-based and food-grade ingredients can be found at ChasingGreen.org.
n According to WebMD.com, charcoal grilling of meat can expose us to two potentially cancer-causing compounds—polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that form when fat from meat drips onto hot coals and are “deposited on food courtesy of flame-ups and rising smoke,” and heterocyclic amines that “are produced when red meat, poultry and fish meet high-heat cooking.” Instead, consider using a closed-flame gas grill to reduce exposure to toxins and cook fresh and organic fruits and vegetables like zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, onions and mushrooms. n Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warn against eating shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish due to high levels of mercury, and to consume no more than six ounces of albacore tuna per week for the same reason. Some studies point to avoiding farmed salmon due to potentially high amounts of PCBs. Bypass larger fish of the food chain; look for those that have earned the Marine Stewardship Council or Aquaculture Stewardship Council labels. n The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently estimated that between 30 to 40 percent of all food in the country is wasted. To improve this situation, use glass containers instead of plastic bags to store leftovers. Also consider sustainable food wraps like Bees Wrap (BeesWrap.com). Made from beeswax, organic cotton, jojoba oil and tree resin, they seal and conform to the shape of whatever food is being stored.

HEALING HEAD TRAUMA by Sylvia Boyed
T
hrough practicing a blend of energy work, a cluster of medical conditions associated with the vestibular system has been observed to be affected positively by both craniosacral therapy and visceral manipulation. Among these medical conditions are vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, light-headedness, spinning, falling or fainting involuntarily (syncope). These particular conditions are often the result of old and new trauma and changes of the cervical spine, or from the trauma of a head injury. Head injuries do not always cause neurological dysfunction, but most of the time they do leave changes to the membrane and the structure of the skull, face and neck. An injury will continue to expand in its compromise by regenerating scar

tissue over time, creating more compression and pressure to the head and neck. This can be very painful and debilitating. Head injuries traumatize the entire nervous system. The misalignment of the mandibular/sphenoid connection in the face structure is particularly significant to the ears and the body’s vestibular system, which controls balance, equilibrium and spatial differentiation. The craniosacral method gently softens these compressed and misaligned regions of trauma, releasing the tensions between the bony structure of the body and layers of different tissue. The viscera of the body sits and moves closest to the spine, weaving itself between the organs and cavities of the body. Applying both methods frees up the deeper levels of constriction and pain within the various systems of the body, increasing function. Using these methods, tinnitus has been observed to decrease over time, some degrees of hearing are restored and equilibrium improves significantly. One patient of craniosacral therapy, Mary Havens, had health issues resulting from an old dental bridge. “Dental bridges must be replaced every 10 to 15 years. In my case, the bridge remained for over 30 years,” explains Havens. “By the time I convinced a dentist to remove it, I had chronic pain in my jaw and my ear had sustained trauma. Having cranial work has made major strides with eliminating jaw pain and reducing pressure and noise levels in my left ear. At times, I have full hearing capacity. I look forward to full restoration through continued bodywork.” A person’s curiosity, commitment and faith can go quite a long way in tapping into the body’s potential to heal. Sylvia Boyed, MA, LMT, CST, is an energetic bodyworker who has worked in the bodywork field for 12 years. She treats all of the systems of the body for all ages, with specializations in joint reconstruction, head injuries, migraine headaches, vertigo, tinnitus, hyperactivity, learning disabilities and anxiety. Munch Nuts for a Healthy Brain Seniors that ate more than 10 grams—about two teaspoons— of nuts a day were able to ward off normal cognitive decline and even improve their cognitive functions by up to 60 percent, according to University of South Australia researchers. The study was based on 22 years of records of 4,822 Chinese adults ages 55 and older; 17 percent of them ate nuts every day, most often peanuts. These seniors had as much as 60 percent improved cognitive function compared to those that didn’t eat nuts, and they showed better thinking, reasoning and memory. “Nuts are known to be high in healthy fats, protein and fiber with nutritional properties that can lower cholesterol and improve cognitive health,” says study author Ming Li.

Take B12 to Help With Parkinson’s New research has found the basic micronutrient vitamin B12 may be the first good tool for averting the hereditary form of Parkinson’s disease, which accounts for about 15 percent of such cases worldwide. In lab tests, an international team of scientists found that AdoCbl, one of the active forms of vitamin B12, inhibits the activity of a mutated enzyme linked to Parkinson’s. Inhibiting this enzyme appears to help stabilize dopamine release in the brain. Dopamine deficiencies manifest in the muscle rigidity and tremors that are hallmark symptoms of Parkinson’s. Another recent study from the University of California San Francisco that included non-hereditary Parkinson’s patients found that symptoms worsened more quickly in earlystage patients that had low B12 levels than in those with higher levels of the vitamin. Producing pure hydrogen is expensive and energy intensive, but a research team at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, at Princeton University, used sunlight to pull hydrogen from industrial wastewater by using a specially designed chamber with a “Swiss cheese”-like black silicon interface. As reported in the journal Energy & Environmental Science, the process is aided by bacteria that generate electrical current when consuming organic matter in the wastewater; the current, in turn, aids in the water splitting. It “allows us to treat wastewater and simultaneously generate fuels,” says Jing Gu, a co-researcher and assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at San Diego State University. The scientists say the technology could appeal to refineries and chemical plants, which typically produce their own hydrogen from fossil fuels and face high costs for cleaning wastewater.

Action Alert
Greenhouse Gases Hit Landmark
Certainty that we are facing a climate crisis today and not just in the future was reached in May through an alarming milestone in carbon dioxide levels. Data from the Mauna Loa Observatory, in Hawaii, shows that the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached 415 parts per million, the highest ever recorded. However, environmental organizations charge that ominous news like this is not being communicated to the public to the degree warranted. While the CBS, NBC and ABC nightly TV news reports combined devoted nearly 18 minutes of coverage to the birth of the royal baby between May 6 and 12, airtime regarding climate change and extinction during the same period only amounted to one minute and 21 seconds, and only on CBS. For more information and to get involved, including signing a petition to demand that the media cover the climate crisis and extinction more frequently and in greater depth, visit Tinyurl.com/ClimateCrisisCampaign.
Is Mold Really Harming Me?
W
by Lance Morris
e do testing for the presence of mold in our homes and work places. Did you know it’s also possible to do tests that confirm if one’s personal health is being negatively impacted by mold? One simple and interesting test is the functional acuity contrast test (FACT). People with mold exposure are less able to differentiate decreasing visual contrast. This test can be done for free online at VCSTest. com. Basically, it is a general test of neurologic function. Much like a hearing test, it demonstrates the presence of dysfunction without pointing to causal specificity. Many things may cause a decrease in perception of reduced visual contrast. Examples include: toxins, chemicals, bacteria, fungus, virus, parasitic infections, drugs, mold mycotoxins and nutritional deficiencies. Although the FACT test doesn’t point to mold as the cause specifically, if the test is negative—showing no perceptual contrast deficit—one can rule out mold as a concern. If it is positive, more tests should be done. At this stage, there are five primary questions. Am I allergic to mold? This can be checked by doing blood or skin scratch testing, looking for different immunoglobulins to be activated. These results are quantifiable and indicate the severity of harm being induced.
Am I infected with mold? This is a harder question to answer. Most infectious vectors create an antigen-antibody response. Normally we can test for these directly from the blood. For those fortunate to have a properly functioning immune system, a mold infection may be no more problematic or dangerous then a cold. Another way to identify the presence of mold in our bodies is to look for DNA of mold found in body tissue or excretions. Do I have a genetic weakness? Mold susceptible people have a genetic defect that doesn’t allow them to use the normal detoxification body pathways. We know that 24 percent of the world population fits into this category. To access this requires looking at our genes, specifically subsets of human leukocyte antigens (HLAs).
Am I being poisoned by mold biotoxin? This requires looking at a variety of hormonal and immunologic factors. Cytokines are proteins that modulate the inflammatory response. Examples of cytokines that we may test include Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8) and Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). These cytokines can then increase the levels of several other immune response related substances, including TGF Beta-1 and MMP-9. In patients that are mold susceptible and are unable to detox properly, Complement 4A is virtually always elevated. Mold biotoxin damages the endocrine system. In particular, it reduces the levels of melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) inducing a slew of symptoms, such as pain, insomnia, leaky gut, slowed healing time, fatigue, muscle cramps, autoimmune conditions, temperature dysregulation and poor concentration. Do I have any secondary co-infections? Lyme disease is one. Another that is good to screen for is MARCoNS, or resistant coag-negative staph bacteria. This test is done with a nasal swab. These are just some of the many more pieces that make up this puzzle of the impact of mold on our health. Dr. Lance J. Morris practices at Wholistic Family Medicine, in Tucson. He has been in clinical practice in Tucson since 1985. Connect at 520322-8122 or ResonantSoundTherapy.com. See ad, page 32

Qigong and the Subtle Energy Body
Q
igong is a simple life science that moves qi and brings a powerful balance into the body. The movements, breathing techniques and meditations all work together to bring our energy body into a harmonious state. The practice of qigong moves the qi and at the same time lets the student practicing qigong feel the subtle energy as the qi moves. During certain exercises, we may notice areas within the body tingle or flutter, maybe feel hot or cold, as the qi moves. As the practice brings us into balance, these feelings become regular. The body then begins to let us know when we have reached a balanced state. We may not always listen to our bodies, but the tangible feeling of qi movement directly correlates to our own balanced state. The subtle energy body is full of bright colors; green surrounds the liver, yellow the stomach, red the heart and so on. The power we hold in the energy body is always there, but it needs to be nurtured and fed. Maintaining it is up to the individual. We can take control of our own well-being and practice a proven system that is over 7,000 years old and feel our subtle energy body come alive. Mark Frighetti teaches ZY Qigong at The Yoga Connection, 3929 E. Pima, Tucson, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday. Recent studies have shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can improve quality of life for individuals suffering from numerous conditions. One type is a device that can be implanted by a neurosurgeon, which sends electrical impulses to the vagus nerve in children that suffer from seizures and adults with depression as a supplemental treatment when surgery or medications are not possible or effective. There is also a handheld, noninvasive VNS option called gammaCore, a U.S. Food and Drug Administrationapproved device that offers hope for sufferers of cluster and migraine headaches. Its effectiveness for chronic pain management, as well as in cases of epilepsy and depression, was published in the Neuromodulation Journal in 2015. PTSD researcher Imanuel Lerman, M.D., and his colleagues with the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, found that VNS affects areas of the brain responsible for processing emotional pain. The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE earlier this year, also show that VNS delays the brain’s response to pain signals in individuals with PTSD.

Mental Health, Trauma and the Gut
When it comes to the vagus nerve, anxiety is physical. Post-traumatic stress is rooted in neurobiology and experienced in the body, not just the mind, says Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., a Boulder, Colorado-based clinical psychologist and author of The Complex PTSD Workbook: A Mind-Body Approach to Regaining Emotional Control and Becoming Whole. “This is why you can’t simply think or talk your way out of your trauma reactions.” According to Schwartz, “Disruptions in the gut flora, which often occur with overuse of antibiotics, can have a significant impact on mental health. An imbalance in the gut can lead to an inflammatory response in the immune system and a wide range of disruptive symptoms.” Aylward notes that 95 percent of the body’s mood-boosting chemical serotonin resides in the enteric nervous system, which governs the function of the gastrointestinal tract. “The brain-gut axis is becoming increasingly important as a therapeutic target for psychiatric and GI disorders,” she says. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, explains the trauma loop. “Developmental trauma impairs the integrative circuits of the brain and nervous system—the prefrontal cortex. When this happens, the brain will be hyperalert, interpreting some non-threatening situations as threatening. “Learning to be aware of our internal

state and learning calming techniques helps to regulate the autonomic nervous system and can go a long way,” says Siegel. “High ventral vagal tone means having a state of calm.”
Vagus Power Everyone can benefit from increased vagal tone, which goes hand-in-hand with engaging the parasympathetic nervous system for optimum equilibrium at the cellular level. Acupuncture, chiropractic—with a focus on the cranial nerves—massage, meditation, singing, laughing loudly, chanting mantras, gentle yoga and exercise, positive social interactions, belly breathing and chanting all make the vagus nerve a happy camper. These activities promote relaxation and help to decrease inflammation. “As a certified yoga instructor, I can attest to a wide range of natural vagus nerve stimulation techniques, especially using the breath,” says Schwartz. “Diaphragmatic breathing creates a gentle massage across your digestive organs, releases the diaphragm and stimulates nerve fibers within the lungs. Heart rate is reduced.” Brief exposure to cold water or cold air improves vagal tone and is a good option when anxiety is high. Eating cold-water fish like wild salmon or other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, seaweed, hemp, flax or chia seeds provides vagal nourishment. The Rise of Gut Problems
O
ur gut can alter our entire body. It can influence the way we think, sleep, eat and act, as well as the health of our skin. When our gut microbiome is off balance, it can greatly contribute to autoimmune diseases and emotional imbalances and lead to a general feeling of malaise. Gut problems are spreading rapidly due to the high stress environments we live in— from pesticides/herbicides, GMO foods, toxic pollution and emotional stress. This is enough to throw anyone’s body out of balance. Leaky gut and food sensitivities are also becoming a common ailment in the U.S. Bloating, fatigue, abdominal pain, headaches, joint pain, skin problems, brain fog and autoimmune related disease are some of the symptoms that can occur. Deep healing requires us to attend to all aspects of ourselves and our lives that contribute to falling ill in the first place. Heal The Brain and Mitochondria with Wahls Protocol
T
hose with a neurological disease or autoimmune disorder may want to look into the Wahls Protocol and start choosing foods that may help reverse symptoms of disease. Just ask Dr. Terry Wahls (TerryWahls.com), who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2000 and was in a reclining wheelchair by 2005. Through her experience with functional medicine, Wahls decided to combine foods that nourish and fortify the brain (to reduce her brain fog) and the mitochondria (to give her energy to make it through her day as a physician). Within five months of starting her own diet plan, Wahls experienced a huge change in her life and a reduction in her symptoms. Since 2007, Wahls has continued to research the benefits of her diet plan with others diagnosed with MS. She also works with patients diagnosed with dementia, Parkinson’s disease and most autoimmune diseases on incorporating her diet strategies into their lives to reduce symptoms and optimize health. Wahls spends three days every summer in Iowa, educating people from all backgrounds on how to incorporate her strategies to promote self-healing. She also educates, trains and certifies medical practitioners in how to assist others who wish to incorporate her diet and food recommendations to optimize their own health. After July 27, Jean Read, PT, will be among one of the first providers in the state of Arizona to be certified in Wahls protocol. Reflexology Gets On Your Nerves—Literally
W
hat is it about working on the feet that reduces nervous tension and anxiety? Plenty. The feet contain more nerves per square inch than any other part of the body. An important nerve for maintaining optimal function is the vagus nerve (vagus, from Latin, means wandering). This wandering nerve is a primary one within the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for automatic functions like digesting and regulating heart rate and blood pressure, among others. Anxiety, which is becoming increasingly prevalent, inhibits digestive and other essential functions and people are finding help through body work that helps calm their jangled nerves. Reflexology differs from massage because its methodology is to reduce tension directly through the nervous system rather than through the musculature as in massage. Both are excellent modalities for stimulating the vagus nerve, creating a deeply relaxed state conducive to healing on many levels. In reflexology, the vagus nerve is mapped on the big toes (top and bottom) and halfway up the midline of the foot. Reflexologists use relaxed pressure along these areas to “wake it up”. Generally, simply bringing conscious awareness especially to the lower body, the base, can promote grounding, safety and stability which support not only the digesting of food, but also the digesting of life with all its complexities. Cheryl Foster, a Nationally Board Certified Reflexologist, has been in practice for 15 years. Her gentle practice, Barefoot Dreams Reflexology, is located at 2230 E. Lymphatic Transport of HDL and Chylomicrons by Susan Couture
M
anual lymphatic drainage is becoming recognized as a therapeutic component in restoring homeostasis and balance. The lymphatic system purifies the blood while hosting immunological defenses. When the lymphatic system is not working properly, the balance is kilted. In 2018, there was a new discovery of the 80th and largest organ of the human body: the interstitium. This is where cell mediation and repulsion occur. The gut is enveloped by interstitium tissue in which interstitial fluids flow, acting as a conduit for movement of potentially dangerous agents, pro-fibrogenic signaling molecules and tumor cells. Mesenteric lymph nodes in the gut region filter chylomicron-rich lymph and degrade the inflammatory lipoproteins prior to entering the thoracic duct (super highway to the heart) and the bloodstream. In the intestines, lipoproteins are absorbed through
the lymph capillaries that extend as a single lymphatic vessel in each villus, termed lacteals. The villus are finger-like projections that help with the movement (peristalsis) during digestion. Each villus has blood capillaries and lacteals. In a diseased state, these lacteals are shorter and less effective in removing particles and intestinal microbiota from the digestive tract. Gut integrity becomes susceptible to intestinal hyperpermeability and the microbiome of the intestine is converted into a pathobiome, a disease-promoting bacterium. When gut leakage of microbiota is sufficiently great to cause toxicity, it can lead to organ damage. The lungs are most susceptible. Prolonged use of antihistamine (desloratadine) cause damage and dysfunction to mesenteric lymphatic vessels contributing to obesity and metabolic syndrome. Bad cholesterol, particularly low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), cause inflammation, contributing to arthrosclerosis. The lymphatic system plays an important role in transporting fat cells (lipids) through the “reverse cholesterol transport” process. High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) gain access to cholesterol within the interstitium. It is transported through the lymph to the liver, where it is packaged and removed through the bile for excretion. The newer strategy of identifying the cholesterol efflux capacity function is becoming more relevant than the static HDL levels with relationship to inflammation and risk of cardiovascular disease. The “old-school” benefits of niacin are becoming popular again for enhancing reverse cholesterol transport. During a manual lymphatic drainage session, abdominal massage techniques pump the mesenteric lymph nodes and Peyer’s patch and deep breathing techniques are applied. Regular lymphatic treatments strengthen overall function, for greater vitality. Susan Couture, BSHA, CRC, LMT, Cert. MLD/CDP works at OM Oracle Massage Lymphatic Therapy, in Tucson. Poor Gut Health: Signs, Symptoms and Solutions
A
by Anne McKechnie
t one time, the human gut was thought to be the place where our food was processed and absorbed, and little was known about the delicate balance that could affect our immune system. Recent research has shown that it is more complex than previously thought and changes in our environment can have a huge impact on whole-body health. When our gut is healthy, we see improvements with our immune system, heart health, brain health and clarity, improved mood, healthy sleep and effective digestion. It has also been shown to help prevent some cancers and autoimmune diseases. It is never too late to make a change to affect our gut and overall health.
Warning Signs of Gut Problems Upset stomach. Bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea and heartburn are all signs that our gut is not processing food and eliminating waste. A high-sugar diet. A diet consisting of processed foods and added sugars can reduce the amount of good gut bacteria and also cause sugar cravings. Refined sugars have been linked to increased 24

inflammation in the body and can also be a precursor to some cancers and a number of diseases. Unintentional weight changes. Changes to our weight up and down without any dietary changes or exercises can also be a sign of an unhealthy gut. An impaired gut is unable to absorb the nutrients, regulate blood sugar and absorb fats. Weight loss can be caused by an overgrowth of bacteria, or weight gain by insulin resistance or an urge to overeat with a refined sugar diet. Sleep disturbances or constant fatigue. The majority of serotonin is produced in the gut, and an unhealthy diet and a damaged gut can affect our ability to sleep. Chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia can result from an unhealthy gut biome. Skin irritation. Inflammation can be caused by a poor diet or food allergies, and may cause more “leaking of certain proteins out into the body. These proteins can irritate the skin and cause conditions such as eczema. Autoimmune condition. Research is continually finding evidence of the relation between the gut and immune system.
Recent research has shown a link to autoimmune diseases, where the body attacks itself rather than harmful invaders. Food intolerances. Quite a few people these days have food intolerances, which is different from food allergies. A food allergy produces an “immune system response”. Many food intolerances are caused by an unhealthy gut and poor bacteria quality.
Tips for Boosting Gut Health
Lower stress levels. Sometimes this is easier said than done, but meditation, walking, massage, diffusing essential oils, reducing caffeine intake, yoga and having a pet are all ways to reduce stress. Get enough sleep. We should plan on having 7 to 8 hours of sleep a day, preparing the sleep area for an optimum sleep experience. Many essential oils can help with that as well, or medication if needed. Eat slowly. This can also help us absorb nutrients better and help fully digest our food. Stay hydrated. Drinking water helps benefit the mucosal lining of the intestines as well as balancing the bacteria in the gut. Take a prebiotic or probiotic. Adding prebiotics or probiotic supplements can be a great way to improve gut health. Prebiotics provide the food to promote a healthy growth of bacteria in the gut. Probiotics are live good bacteria.
Check for food intolerances. Removing food triggers can help the gut. Food intolerances can also cause gas, bloating and abdominal pain, rashes and nausea. Removing a food one by one can help figure out what is causing the issue and can help the gut. Change diets. Gut health can be improved by removing processed, high sugar, high fat foods from the diet. Eat plenty of plant-based foods and lean protein. A diet high in fiber has also been shown to help a healthy gut microbiome tremendously. Legumes, beans, peas, oats, berries, asparagus and leeks have been shown to have a positive impact on gut health. Some other foods that have proven benefits to the gut include garlic and onion, fermented foods (kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir) and collagenboosting foods (bone broth, salmon). Eliminating triggers and making changes can significantly help our gut health over time. We can start by making small changes every day. Anne McKechnie aims to improve people’s physical, environmental, financial and personal health by providing opportunities that help people balance these four aspects and thus improve a person’s overall quality of life. n 1982, the Japanese government coined the term Shinrin-yoku (“taking in the forest atmosphere” or “forest bathing”) to inspire people to visit and appreciate national parks. Today, that walk in the woods has become a medically recommended activity worldwide for improving immunity, reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, managing chronic pain and promoting better sleep. The research supporting the physical and mental benefits of forest bathing is so compelling that it’s advocated by the National Institute of Public Health of Japan and prescribed to patients there. Researchers from the University of East Anglia, in England, examined years
of studies and found significant evidence that experiencing nature has a positive impact on health. Published in the journal Environmental Research in 2018, the metaanalysis involving 290 million participants from 20 countries concluded that spending time in green spaces lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, and reduces the stress hormone cortisol. The study also noted a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes and death from heart disease.

Shinrin-yoku can ease the symptoms of adult depression. “Forest bathing plugs us into something we all seek—a source of peace and well-being. The thing that first hooked me into being a forest bathing guide was reading the robust body of research that proves the benefits of forest bathing,” says Judy Beaudette, board secretary of Friends of North Creek Forest, in Bothell, Washington. Melanie Choukas-Bradley, a certified forest therapy guide and author of The Joy of Forest Bathing: Reconnect With Wild Places & Rejuvenate Your Life, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, attests to the therapeutic value of forest bathing. “Even occasional nature immersion can have beneficial health effects that can last for days. Many doctors are now prescribing nature to patients. There’s an organization devoted to this called Park Rx America.” She recommends just 20 minutes during a lunch break to sit on a bench or on the ground beneath trees. There are many theories of why spending time in the woods or any other natural place makes us feel good; for example, findings published in the journal Toxicological Research in 2017 attribute the immune-boosting, mood-lifting benefits of forest bathing to natural terpenes released into the air by trees, especially conifers. Terpenes contain anti-inflammatory properties that strengthen the body’s natural defenses.
Choukas-Bradley says that observance is key. Recalling her first forest bathing experience, she says, “We paid attention to our breath and tuned in to the sights, sounds and sensations all around us. I noticed a perfect spider’s web, just barely trembling in the slightest breeze, its creator clinging to the center.” She recommends finding a “wild home”—a neighborhood park, garden or backyard tree. “Make it a practice to find a ‘sit spot’ where you can quietly observe beauty and are apt to feel a sense of awe. Psychology researchers have shown that experiencing awe has many positive effects on emotional health.” It doesn’t matter if we commune with nature in a rural or urban setting, only that we remain dialed in to our surroundings. “Forest bathing is a tool for slowing down our buzzing minds and practicing a secret superpower—the skill of consciously choosing what we put our attention on,” says Beaudette. Marlaina Donato is the author of several books, including Multidimensional Aromatherapy. She is also a composer. Connect at AutumnEmbersMusic.com.
Sensory Immersion, Not Exercise Shinrin-yoku is intended to engage the trinity of body-mind-spirit. “The main purpose is not exercise or getting from point A to point B, but rather having a mindful, sensory experience in nature. It isn’t some prescribed task you need to do, like pushups,” explains Hannah Fries, a poet and author of Forest Bathing Retreat: Find Wholeness in the Company of Trees. She communes with the wild for both health and inspiration. “Even if it’s only 20 minutes a week, go outside without a phone or other electronic device. Walk slowly. Look more closely. Listen. Smell. Touch. Interact with the living, breathing world around you. It’s that simple.”
A Simple Meditation Forest bathing guide Judy Beaudette suggests: n Find something you can put your attention on that is natural— a plant, a stone, a bird’s song, a stream or a forest, the sky, even a tuft of grass or weeds growing out of a crack in the sidewalk. n Practice noticing something small in nature, like an acorn, a leaf or a grain of sand. Put it in the palm of your hand and for five minutes, notice the details. Keep noticing. See what thoughts come to mind and keep returning your attention to this small thing. After the five minutes have elapsed, write down your observations.

HELP FOR HOME GARDENERS Extension Agents at Your Service by Yvette C. Hammett
M
any home gardeners readily list flies, wasps and beetles among the “pests” in their gardens. However, many of these are actually pollinators that help boost production of fruits and vegetables; others are beneficial insects that keep the real plant-killers at bay. A quick call to the local cooperative extension service can help sort out friend from foe—and that’s just the beginning of what this valuable, underutilized resource can offer. Each year, millions in federal taxpayer dollars help fund county agricultural extension programs administered through the 108 colleges and universities that comprise the nation’s land grant university system. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which supplies the money, also helps fund science-based research meant to reach not only farmers, but home gardeners seeking advice on best practices. The USDA is trying to do a better job of raising public awareness of assistance that’s readily available, free of charge, especially now that it’s getting more funding. 28

Organic on the Rise
“The good news is that the 2018 Farm Bill provided increases for many of our programs, including the organic agriculture research and extension initiative program for which we received significant funding,” says Mathieu Ngouajio, program leader for the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The USDA is eager to see the connections their constituents are making with the research. “We want to identify the needs of organic gardeners, and the best way to meet those needs to get our research into their hands,” Ngouajio says. County extension agents are on the front lines of this effort, offering low- or no-cost soil testing, handbooks on a variety of local gardening topics and workshops on everything from making rain barrels and creating rain gardens to implementing eco-friendly pest control, cultivating native plants and employing best practices for organic gardening. Master gardeners that volunteer their exper-

tise are central to supporting extension outreach activities. “We would love more business from the public,” says Weston Miller, an associate professor with Oregon State University’s extension service. “The public service of the master gardener program is to answer questions,” including what and when to plant and how much irrigation is required. In Oregon, there are 3,500 master gardeners, with 650 volunteers in Portland alone. “We train master gardeners in how to use our resources and interpret the research to the public,” Miller says. “There are trained volunteers in pretty much every county in the country ready and willing to answer any gardening question,” Miller says. For example, a new organic gardener might not know the correct soil amendments to use or how to

There is also a nationwide network called Ask the Expert (USDA.gov/askexpert) and questions will automatically go to an extension staff person or master gardener in the area where the inquiring gardener lives.
Reducing Confusion
Many of those getting into organic gardening might feel confused as to what connotes organic, Miller says. “Organic gardening is using a naturally formed material for fertilizer and pesticide, from plant, animal or mineral sources.” The biggest area of confusion is that many people think organic means pesticide-free. But that is not always true. There is organic pest control, Miller says. “In terms of gardening, there are certified

organic products you can use and still be organic.” One thing to look for on a label is the seal of the Organic Materials Review Institute, which indicates the product is suitable for organic gardening. However, there aren’t many good options for weed management, he adds. “You have to do weeding by hand or use an herbicide that isn’t organic.” Another issue that extension programs can help with is making sure organic gardeners receive only scientifically researched information, says Nicole Pinson, an urban horticulture agent with the Hillsborough County Extension Service, in Tampa, Florida. “Gardening information is available on websites and on social media. Some information that pops up is not research-based, or they are selling a product and are not unbiased,” Pinson says. “We generally stick to recommendations we have been able to vet through research. When we make a recommendation, we give folks all of the options of what they can do.” To find a nearby extension office, visit Tinyurl.com/ExtensionFinder. Yvette C. Ray’s rooftop greenhouse, located on top of a local hardware store that sells his edible plants at retail, offers all the fixings for a healthy, diverse diet: hydroponic towers of leafy greens, trays of microgreens for corporate clients, specialty varieties of hot peppers for the company’s hot sauce and stacking cubes of an albino strawberry variety that Ray crossbred himself. “There are so many ways to contribute to urban farming, from aquaponics to vermicomposting; it’s about finding your niche,” he says.

The Grace of Abundance Five Practices to Create a More Abundant Life
A
by Meriflor Toneatto
bundance means plenty—a flowing of love, vitality, wealth, joy, prosperity, success and more. GRACE is an acronym representing five practices that can magnify abundance in all areas of life, including finances.
G = Gratitude There is tremendous power in being grateful, because what we focus on expands. Gratitude opens our heart to receive and give blessings. This puts us in a space to have more things to be grateful for. Practicing gratitude can be as simple as saying, “I am grateful for…” or “I am thankful for…” If we find ourselves in a negative state, practice gratitude even for as brief a period as 60 seconds. It will positively shift our emotion, thereby allowing us to be open to abundance.
Commit to gifting ourselves with an abundant mindset because our mindset is critical to our success. One way to quickly shift our mindset to the positive is to concentrate on our desire and ask ourselves, “What do I have to believe for this to be true?” Our mind will creatively generate many possibilities that can get us excited, which then shifts how we think and feel to what is positive. As we do this, we will also create greater confidence in the knowledge that the universe is always working in our favor.
E = Expression Express our passion by first doing what we love. Then find a way to use our passion, purpose and life to serve others. When we do this, our world, our financial abundance and our joy will expand exponentially. R = Receiving To graciously receive can be as simple as accepting a compliment. Another way to receive is by requesting our heart’s desire. There is nothing wrong with wanting more. The truth is that we can have more—as much as we are willing to receive.
KICK OFF SUMMER WITH A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP
A = Alignment The key way to get into alignment for more abundance is to know our purpose, follow our passion and work on releasing internal fears and doubts.

has recently been legitimized by the FDA, and could be one of the major advancements in medicine that’s been seen in a very long time. The hemp and cannabis plants have over 100 different chemical compounds, better known as cannabinoids. These interact with the endocannabinoid system, which is a system of neurotransmitters in the body that helps balance and maintain normal body function, including the nervous system, respiratory and digestive systems, brain and peripheral tissue and organs. Two of the major cannabinoids that have been studied are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Although related and coming from the same plant, there are differences in the chemical compounds. THC is a psychoactive agent and when consumed or applied can make the patient “high”. Many people who are seeking alternative medicines are not looking for those psychoactive effects. CBD

does not have the mind-altering effect on the body but still delivers many medicinal benefits to the body. There are a number of ways to get the medicine into the body. There are drops that can be placed under the tongue, salves and ointments that can be applied topically and a plethora of edibles that include candies, savory foods, mints and drinks. CBD can also be inhaled through smoking or vaping the oil. Although in its infancy stage of research, CBD already has lots of anecdotal support for the many benefits that it has medicinally. Patients, parents and spouses are sharing their success stories from around the world via social media. The testimonials show benefits for treating chronic pain, sleeplessness, anxiety, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, cancer and nausea, to name a few. CBD is an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and immunosuppressive. Keeping in mind that longitudinal studies still need to be conducted to give these testimonials any real credibility, the number of testimonials shared each day continues to grow exponentially. Researchers have a large number of people from these videos and articles to jumpstart the process of proving its efficacy. There is scientific research, however, that has been proven. According to the National Institutes of Health, CBD is shown to help with the debilitating sideeffects of cancer treatment. Other studies are showing that CBD is effective in treating PTSD and alcohol and drug addiction withdrawals. The FDA has recently approved a CBD-based medication, Epidiolex, to help fight seizures associated with epilepsy. According to an interview in Men’s Health

Try Cordyceps to Strengthen the Lungs People suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, can breathe easier by taking the Chinese medicinal fungus Cordyceps sinensis, a new meta-analysis shows. Researchers at the Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine conducted a review of 15 high-quality studies that involved 1,238 COPD patients and found that cordyceps significantly improved lung function, exercise endurance and quality of life with no report of any serious adverse effects. Cordyceps, which is said to relax and open the airways, has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-asthmatic, expectorant and cough suppressant.
magazine with Dr. Orrin Devinsky, director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at NYU Langone Health, CBD should be researched across the board on the benefits it has with the many different epilepsy syndromes. Now that the FDA has approved a medicine which is CBD infused, the steps for creating new medications containing CBD have already begun. Although a formal statement from the FDA has not been released regarding the safety of CBD, it has been announced that the World Health Organization has provided data, stating that pure CBD is safe for consumption. This is a very good sign for the changing views of the medical community. CVS and Walgreens have recently announced that they will start carrying CBD oil products. With so many CBD products hitting the market, how can consumers be certain that the products being purchased are of the highest grade and quality? Like vitamins and other alternative medicines, a little footwork is needed by the patients or their caretakers. Since the FDA has yet to set standards regarding quality and dosage, it’s important to be vigilant when choosing a product. Be certain that the seller has their product third-party tested to ensure that the CBD is therapeutic grade and pure. Many of the products on the market are not labeled as such and should be avoided. With plant medicine becoming more mainstream, it’s going to be expected that patients become their own self advocate when it comes to medicating. The days of getting a prescription and taking it blindly, not knowing exactly what it contains and how it’s going to affect other parts of the body, is dwindling. Become educated on all things natural and how they may help. Like any other type of medicine, it is best to speak with a professional before taking products that are unfamiliar or new to a patient’s treatment. J. emp, and CBD products derived from hemp, have been sweeping the nation by storm. While there are many benefits from this amazing plant—food, fuel, medicine, textiles and more—it is important to know the source and quality of the hemp. Like all other agricultural products, hemp can be mass produced, and this can cause issues in the industry. Lack of quality control, oversaturation of sub-par material, inflated prices, greed and corruption and public misinformation, are just some of the issues prevalent, leading some to discouragement due to unsatisfying experiences. Hemp is a unique plant that grows easily, vigorously and in a lot of diverse climates. It can grow large or small, and pull heavy metals from soil or air, which makes it ideal for phytoremediation. Because of the ability to pull toxins without being affected by them, it is crucial to know where hemp comes from. Pesticides, synthetic nutrients, regions with air pollution, soil pollution or water pollution will produce contaminated crops, unless measures are implemented to counter the impact the area adds. Organic soil, greenhouses and rainwater harvesting are some examples of procedures that can increase the quality of a crop, while making it sustainable and consistent for future harvests. If plans for hemp utilization are through means of consumption, then knowing the source is key, so check any testing/lab results possible. Extracts made from contaminated material will still have contaminants, where it be in parts per million (PPM) or parts per billion (PPB); there will still be something that the body will ingest. While some may not be affected by these residual substances, others may—and they could have very bad reactions, especially if working with an already compromised immune system. Although these are some of the issues to look out for, there are still plenty of people and companies that want to make and grow, great quality hemp products/flower. Thankfully, these companies will be transparent about all procedures, materials and results to solidify their claims. It is up to us, as consumers, to keep this industry honest and demand the best quality and price for something that was put on this Earth to help us in so many ways. SUMMER EATING
The Herbal Connection by Kajsa Nickels

ummer is an ideal time to add a healthy dose of fresh, organic herbs to make cool salads, luscious smoothies and other hot-weather eats and treats. Herbs are not only a flavorful addition to any meal, they are also chock-full of health benefits, from lowering blood pressure and improving mineral balance to increasing immune support, hydration, energy and healthy skin. Most people consider using herbs in small amounts as seasonings for recipes such as spaghetti sauce, soups or desserts. However, they are edible plants, just like kale and spinach. Although they tend to have strong flavors when dried, fresh herbs are usually quite mild and can be eaten in large amounts like any other vegetable.
Cool Benefits “Summertime herbs are important for dealing with the heat and humidity that the season brings,” says Nathaniel Whitmore, a Chinese medicine herbalist and shiatsu massage practitioner in Milford, Pennsylvania. An herb that he recommends for this time of year is American ginseng, which, unlike its Chinese namesake, is considered a “cooling” herb and helps keep the body moist. When combined with fresh chrysanthemum flowers, the result is a powerful elixir that both hydrates and energizes. “A piece of American ginseng root and a few chrysanthemums placed in a jar of water and set on a windowsill for a few days makes a great cold infusion,” says Whitmore. “You can store it in the fridge for a few days and drink it in small amounts at a time to benefit from its energizing and hydrating properties.” 40

Soft-stemmed herbs such as parsley and dill can be used in large amounts in salads and summer sandwiches. Other heat-tolerant herbs that are easy to grow include lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, mint and basil. “Lemon balm is great for headaches and insomnia that are common during summer heat waves,” says Michelle Schoffro Cook, Ph.D., an herbalist and doctor of natural medicine, in Ontario, Canada. “Basil can help reduce summer achiness, while lavender serves as a relaxant and an excellent bug repellant.” In addition to relieving headaches and restlessness, lemon balm is also beneficial for those that suffer from high blood pressure. A study in the Journal of Herbal Medicine reports that it is helpful in reducing blood pressure in patients with chronic stable angina. Rosemary, another herb used for sleep disorders, was found to also help improve memory and decrease anxiety in a study conducted in Iran at the Kerman University of Medical Sciences. One study in 2009 by researchers in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Allahbad, in India, revealed that polyphenols found in herbs and plants harbor antioxidant properties that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative disorders.
Fresh Is Best While herbs can be used in their extracted and dried forms, the most significant health benefits are often found in the raw, organic plant. “Fresh is better,” says Whitmore. “This is especially true when it comes to the more aromatic plants such as basil and lavender. A lot of the more volatile constituents are lost during the drying process.” Most herbs grow best in dry garden areas that receive at least eight hours of sun each day. Although some herbs can grow in partially shaded locations, they won’t be as flavorful. Many herbs can also be grown in containers or pots. Maria Noël Groves, a clinical herbalist in Allenstown, New Hampshire, and author of Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies: How to Create a Customized Herb Garden to Support Your Health & Well-Being, lists lemon balm, Korean mint, anise hyssop and purple basil as among her favorite summer culinary and beverage herbs that are easy to grow in pots. These make easy pickings for wraps, salads, sandwiches and more. “Lemon balm can also be used to make infused water,” says Groves. “With lemon verbena, lemon grass or holy basil, the result is refreshing and calming.” Just take a few sprigs and place them in either plain or seltzer water. The result is a delicately flavored beverage that’s also healthy and hydrating. Kajsa Nickels is a freelance writer and a music composer. She resides in northeastern Pennsylvania. GOOD TO KNOW Wonder Weed Hemp to the Rescue at Detox Sites
Cannabis is enjoying a renaissance of sorts, and one new application for hemp, the no-buzz industrial variety used in fabrics, oils and foods, is cleaning nuclear radiation from toxic soil and removing metals like cadmium, lead, mercury and other pollutants via phytoremediation. Allison Beckett, a cultivation expert at Marijuana.com, says, “Industrial hemp has been used in areas of high radiation, such as Fukushima, [in Japan,] with promising results. Not only does hemp pull toxic, heavy metals from the soil, it actually improves soil structure, making it usable as productive farmland again. Plus, hemp is a vigorous plant that absorbs CO2 rapidly, making it an encouraging solution to climate change.” Hemp phytoremediation has been used in Italy to clean up the small town of Taranto, where a steel plant has been leaking dioxin into the air and soil. The Pennsylvania Industrial Hemp Council and Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, are running a project to test the process in an arseniccontaminated area in Upper Saucon Township that once harbored a zinc mine.
Getting to Know an Arizona Cannabis Grower
M
any cannabis users don’t realize the dedication, love and effort it takes to grow their medicine. One local farmer does. Meet Taylor, who has worked for Tucson SAINTS Dispensary for close to five years. His career in the cannabis industry started as a “Trimmer”, one who skillfully trims the fan leaves from the bud before it is dried and sent to the dispensary for patients. He currently works under SAINTS Master Grower. After working with the plants so closely, Taylor’s passion for growing led him to absorb any knowledge and information that he could learn from his peers in the industry. He found that he enjoyed watching the plants thrive and saw how his focus and dedication to each detail of the plants paid off. The more attention he gave to the plants, the better they turned out, which in turn created better output and quality for Arizona medical marijuana patients. His love for growing the finest cannabis shines through in the many positive reviews that SAINTS Dispensary receives on the quality of their medicine. One strain that has gained a lot of attention recently is a particular sativa that works by lifting patients from depression. “Casey Jones is aesthetically pleasing with a unique structure and longer than usual trichomes that can be seen from a distance,” explains Taylor. “It smells like the best bowl of cereal that you’ve ever had—a breakfast of champions. It brings a perfect boost for a morning hike, adding a great spark of creativity.” A hybrid strain that veterans and those with PTSD seek out is another top seller at SAINTS. One patient claimed, “I can actually feel it relaxing and rewiring my body. Perfect balance of energy, relaxation, pain relief, euphoria and creativity—a real anti-anxiety and anti-depressant.” Taylor adds, “Gelato has quickly become one of my favorite strains. Its deep dark purple tones are beautiful. The fruity aroma, I would best describe as how a mouthful of Starbursts taste. It is my go-to strain after a long day’s work, very relaxing, but not overwhelming. It allows some productivity before it’s time to sleep.” Another sativa that patients look for in a morning pick-me-up is so popular that SAINTS can’t keep it in stock. “Citrus Soother truly lives up to her name with a very pungent lemony scent that stands out in every room. It is a sativa dominant strain that provides wonderful energy while also having well balanced effects, soothing joint pain and calming the mind,” says Taylor. SAINTS’ focus is on their patient’s needs, striving to assist each individual with choosing the best quality medicine. They pride themselves on their growers’ dedication to each plant, from growing it to dispensing to their patients. At this, Taylor excels. Tucson SAINTS Dispensary is located at 112 S. Kolb Rd., Tucson. Connect at 520-886-1003 or TucsonSaints@gmail.com. See ad, page 43.
