The Natural Woman’s Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, & Parenting

“When a mother is pregnant, the kind of soul she can accept depends on her mental attitude. And then there is another beauty that within the realm of your belly, which is your pregnancy, you can totally transform the soul. The soul is pure and has nothing to do, but the subtle body carries the karma of the previous life. A mother can totally purify the subtle body of the new child.” ~ Yogi Bhajan, Women’s Camp 1976

Wordz From the Editor Being a mother is one of the greatest experiences to have as a woman. Natural Mama is away for me to share with women the joys of being a mother and raising extraordinary human beings. I am the mother of 6 great children and I know how challenging it can be raising kids and pursuing your dreams. As a working mom it is very important that my work involves my children because they are my motivation to live my highest good. I am their first teacher and what I do lays the foundation for all they can accomplish. They keep me on my toes. As mothers we are the first teachers so it is our responsibility to move humanity into a place where we can evolve into a more caring, peaceful, and happier society.

With the new release of Natural Mama I felt that it would be great to share with you my experience of birthing my twin boys Zion & Zavion into the world. They turn one this month and I cannot believe a year has passed so fast. I hope my story will help all mama’s or expecting mama’s strive for better birthing experiences. My journey with my twin pregnancy ended on 7/26/2012 with the birth of my boys. The journey was incredible and somewhat of a challenge, but in the end I would have not changed a single thing. I hope my story will empower women to not fear childbirth, but to embrace it. I wanted to experience birth my way, when my husband and I found out we were pregnant our plan were to have a home-birth. Little did we know we were expecting twins and with the "so-called risk" of birthing twins no midwives in the state of Tennessee would agree to handle my prenatal care and homebirth. This was very heartbreaking to me because I feared having my twins in a hospital because I did not want a C-section nor did I want a fight on my hands in choosing to have a natural, intervention free birth in a hospital. So I decided to LET IT ALL GO! I chose to focus on having healthy babies my way no matter where my pregnancy ended. I trusted the Great Spirit to guide me and give me strength to handle whatever challenges set before me. The only thing I knew to do was to continue eating healthy, keeping my mind clear and set on positive results and I communicated with my babies everyday telling them how happy I was to have them and how much I wanted to see them healthy and strong when their born.

I gave my doctors our birth plan they already knew I wanted a natural birth, but when they saw my birth plan eyebrows raised. I made it very clear that I wanted to be in charge of my birth with only doctor’s assistance in case of an emergency. No medicine, No constant monitoring, No interventions No Delivery in the OR (operating room). Plain and simple, I made it clear I did not want to be looked at as a "high risk patients just because I was having twins. Everything leading up to the birth was healthy and normal so why shouldn't birth. We chose to have our babies at Vanderbilt University a "teaching hospital", 9 times out of 10 the doctor who would assist me in delivering my babies would be doctors I never met before who knew nothing about me except that I was pregnant and considered "high risk" because I was caring twins. Why we chose this hospital? I do not know it just felt right, and I figured the purpose behind it will reveal itself soon. Prior to the birth I had to do a lot of research on hospital policy on twin births to make sure my tracks were covered. Wednesday 7/25/2012

37 weeks and 1 day I woke up at 6:02 a.m. I felt restless, so I got out of bed and decided to do a little grocery shopping. By the time I got home I noticed my pants being very moist in between my legs. I changed my pants and 9 months pregnant kept it moving with my daily duties of being a mother, wife and running a business. A few hours later I noticed more moisture and decided to call my doctor to see if I could be check to make sure my water was not leaking. They suggested I go to the hospital to get checked out.

When we made it to the hospital I found out my water had not broken, but I was 5cm dilated with contractions coming 3 minutes apart. I did not feel a thing (Thank you Hypno-babies NO PAIN!!!), so they decided to admit me in the hospital . I was finally in labor, once we were admitted and into a room I made sure all the staff and my nurse had copies of my birth plan making it very clear what kind of birth I wanted. And to my surprise everyone on the team respected my wishes and didn't give me a hard time. I was amazed I remember thinking to myself “wow that was easy!" Then the waiting began.... My contractions were coming regular, I felt no pain only a lots of pressure I continued with my baby hypnosis, I walked, sat on my birthing ball, did nipple stimulation, and laughed with my family for the next few hours. By 10 p.m. that evening I was still the same no change, but this didn't concern me, I knew my babies knew when they wanted to be born and this halt in my laboring was very normal, labor shouldn't have a

time frame and I trusted my body. After hours have gone passed with no progression the doctors suggested I use some Pitocin to speed things up, I declined their offer. They then suggested I be moved to another room to let me rest and eat and whenever my labor decided to pick back up they would bring me back to labor and delivery. Once in the new room my labor had completely stopped, no more contraction so I took the time to relax and sleep. Thursday 7/26/2012 37 weeks 2 days The next morning I woke up at 4 in the morning and I meditated and talked to my babies. Spirit told me today would be the day, but it would not be easy. After a good meditation session and breakfast I was checked My Blessingsway celebration with my husband Roy our again, this time by a new team of doctors who knew daughters Royana, and Andrea, and our sons Joseph and Roy nothing about my birth plan and did not want to honor III it. After being check with no progress more doctors came in trying to persuaded me to change my mind about the Pitocin still holding my ground I declined with a smile on my face. Next even more staff decided to pay me a visit trying to talk me out of my decision to not have my babies in the Operating Room. This crowd of doctors were definitely different then the last crowd. They came in with all kinds of excuses and horror stories on why I couldn't have the normal birth I wanted because Baby B was breech. I held strong and continued to give lots of No's with a smile nothing they could say or do moved me. As more and more tension built my contractions picked back up and labor began once again. I was moved back into L&D to be greeted by more and more unhappy doctors who were totally against me having a natural birth my way with only their minimal assistance. Things really heated up in that room the ironic thing was my labor got even stronger. After a long and somewhat hostile talk with the doctors and other hospital staff we were left in the room with a lot of things to think about. Luckily for me I had a great team by my side my husband ,my mother, and Dr. Jeff Menzie who helped from a distance over the phone. We had to regroup and have a plan in place before the doctors decided to come back in. I knew I couldn't deal with anymore arguing now that my labor picked back up, that wouldn't be good for me or my babies. So I began to meditate listening to my Chakra sounds and I started to visualize me birthing my babies the way I wanted, I told my boys to be born nice, fast , and easy. I continued to visualize baby B head down and being born easy. This moment was powerful I felt strong and that I was protected, I remember hearing my ancestors speak to me telling me "you can do this it’s almost over" I was so overwhelmed with all kinds of emotions that I began to cry, this cry was so refreshing all of my fears, came out through my tears and the power of the Universe flooded my body and I felt that I could do anything.

Recharged, me and my team came up with our plan to request an ultra-sound to see baby B's position and we made it clear we would accept medical intervention if it was necessary. Dr. J instructed my mother to clear the energy from the room. So she moved all negative energy out the room an anointed it with lavender oil. My husband placed my crystals around the room to create a peaceful environment. We brought back peace and calmness. We were ready to handle whatever came our way. The doctors returned and to our surprise they had completely transformed they agreed to our plan, their attitudes had changed. Our magic changed the entire wing, they agreed to let me birth in L&D in the position I chose. I was closer to birthing my way.

Getting ready to push. The hospital had a squatting bar on the bed so I could push Squatting instead of on my back.

We had another ultrasound done and it showed that baby B had already turned head down and that threw all the so-called "risk" out the door. Everything was in place everyone's negative attitudes changed we were all on the same page. My labor really started to pick up, but I was still at 6 cm with my bag of water bulging, I knew my water had to break because the fluid prevented Baby A to move down so I had my water broken. That was all we needed I instantly went from 6cm to 9 cm in a matter of minutes. 20 minutes had passed and I was ready to push, the staff had everything prepped and ready they positioned my bed to I could squat and even gave me a squatting bar.

hind him all it took was for me to push 1 more time and Zavion Kamray was born 4 minutes later into my arms just as healthy as his big brother.

Both boys were 5lbs and 13oz a piece and 18 inches long. They were healthy everyone in the delivery room were amazed. They never saw nothing like it, I was the first woman to ever birth twins in that hospital without the OR room. The next morning I was greeted by all kinds of staff who congratulated me and even thanked me for showing them that there was another way to birth. They said I taught them. It was a very proud moment.

To wrap it all I up I was cleared to go home with my I squatted there listening to Alicia Keys "Super Wom- babies’, perineum still intact (NO TEARS!!!) I got evean" holding my Snowflake Obsidian and Quartz Crys- rything I wanted and more I left feeling empowered, and happy to have my boys in each arm. tal, everyone in the room waited on my call and watched as I pushed with each contraction after the I hope this story will encourage every woman who wants to make their birth the way they want it. No 3rd push Zion Amire' was born into my arms very matter what the setting is you have rights and if you alert and crying 100% healthy Baby B was right be-

stand your ground nothing can go wrong Trust Your body. I knew my body and I trusted my body to do exactly what it was created to do. Having a positive mind gives positive results. Peace,

Homebirth VS Hospital Birth‌ 33 Vaccine Yes or No?...36 Tips for Natural Labor...44

Wise women believe that most of the problems of pregnancy can be prevented by attention to nutrition. Morning sickness and mood swings are connected to low blood sugar; backaches and severe labor pains often result from insufficient calcium; varicose veins, hemorrhoids, constipation, skin discoloration and anemia are evidence of lack of specific nutrients; preeclampsia, the most severe problem of pregnancy, is a form of acute malnutrition. Excellent nutrition includes pure water, controlled breath, abundant light, loving and respectful relationships, beauty

and harmony in daily life, joyous thoughts and vital foodstuffs. Wise women have recommended herbal tonics for childbearing for thousands of years. These herbs are empirically safe and notably effective. Tonic herbs improve general health by balancing and sustaining energy flow and focus in the body. Tonics allay annoyances and prevent major problems. They can boost the supply of vital minerals and vitamins, increase energy and improve uterine tone. Some herbs are contraindicated during pregnancy or are restricted to the last few weeks of pregnancy.

The safest approach is to avoid using herbs during the first trimester of pregnancy unless necessary (for example, ginger for treating morning sickness), to only use those herbs known to be safe in pregnancy, and to consult with an experienced midwife, herbalist, or MD on the safe use of herbs in pregnancy. Beverage teas that are known to be safe in moderate amounts (e.g., red raspberry, spearmint, chamomile, lemon balm, nettles, rose hips), and ingestion of normal amounts of cooking spices are considered safe in pregnancy. These 5 herbs are known to be safe during pregnancy and can help with a variety of common discomforts and problems while helping prepare your body for a healthy birth.

Ginger Ginger is a spicy, aromatic herb with which many of you are familiar for cooking. Did you know it has been shown to be safe and effective in treating morning sickness? There are several ways to use ginger in pregnancy. Tea and capsules are commonly recommended in books and other sources, but my experience is that drinking warm or even cool tea when you are already sick to your stomach is not fun, and may even make you hurl! Ditto on capsules sitting in your stomach and the water or juice you need to take to chase them. Note: persistent or repeated vomiting in pregnancy can be a medical problem. Consult your midwife or doctor if you ex-

perience anything beyond typical morning sickness symptoms. Red raspberry leaf This herb is a mineral rich tonic, traditionally used to support a healthy pregnancy and tone the uterus to help a woman prepare for birth. Some studies have shown that it can help to expedite labor and reduce complications and interventions associated with birth. Since it doesn’t have the most pleasant taste when taken as a tea by itself, I generally recommend mixing it with some spearmint and rose hips for a delicious tea that can be taken daily, 1-2 cups throughout the second and third trimesters. The recommended dose is from 1.5 – 5 gm daily in tea. Echinacea is an herbal supplement used to boost immune function. It’s useful for colds and upper respiratory infections, and it has been used as immune support by those undergoing cancer treatments. Pregnant women get colds just like everyone else, and because natural hormonal changes in pregnancy already make your nose feel stuffy and a big belly can make it feel harder to breathe, colds and coughs can be extra miserable. Echinacea is best used in the form of a tincture, which does contain a small amount of alcohol, but this tiny amount is not considered dangerous when taken in the recommended dose of up to 5 mL of the tincture (about 1 measured teaspoon) up to twice daily. Capsules can also be used according to recommended package dosing for individual products, if you are uncomfortable with using a product con-

taining alcohol during pregnancy. Cranberry Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are very common during pregnancy. Medically they are treated with antibiotics the first time, and if a second infection occurs, the medical recommendation is to place pregnant women on antibiotics for the entire pregnancy to prevent further infections. While cranberry should not be used to substitute for appropriate medical care, it has been shown in numerous studies to prevent UTIs. If you have a history of them, or have had one already during pregnancy, talk with your midwife or doctor about trying cranberry for prevention. While antibiotics are sometimes necessary, newer research is showing that exposure to antibiotics during pregnancy can have long-term consequences on our babies, including development of asthma and inflammatory bowel disease. Cranberry can be used in the form of cranberry juice (even Ocean Spray has been shown to work, but I recommend less sugary types from the natural foods store or fresh juice made at home in a juicer using ½ cup of fresh frozen cranberries and 2 apples) or cranberry capsules dosed as recommended on the product.

Chamomile Pregnancy is often a time of disturbed

sleep whether from vivid dreams, new concerns over becoming a mom, or the discomfort of your growing belly making it hard to find just the right position. One of my favorite herbs for gently and safely promoting relaxation and sleep is chamomile. It is soothing for your tummy and tastes delicious, too. Chamomile can be taken up to several cupful's daily if you are stressed, and taken before bed for sleep. I generally recommend 1-2 cups in the evening, but do not drink tea within an hour of going to sleep or you’ll surely be up to pee (though this happens in pregnancy anyway!). To make chamomile tea steep 1 large or 2 small tea bags in 8 oz of boiling water for up to 10 minutes, or better yet, purchase organic chamomile blossoms from the Natural Woman Webstore

A Quick Guide into Breast feeding Ever baby deserves the very best and breastfeeding is a good start in giving your baby the best. Breast feeding can start immediately after birth. Some babies get the hang of nursing pretty fast while other babies have a hard time latching on. If your baby has a hard time latching on or if you experience a discomfort while trying to breast feed. DO NOT GIVE UP! Keep trying it requires patience and after about a week or so you and your baby will be pros.

Why is Breast Milk good for baby? Breast milk is easier to digest – For most babies, especially premature babies, breast milk is easier to digest than formula. The proteins in formula are made from cow’s milk and it takes time for babies’ stomachs to adjust to digesting them. Early breast milk is liquid gold – Known as liquid gold, colostrum (coh-LOSS-trum) is the thick yellow first breast milk that you make during pregnancy and just after birth. This milk is very rich in nutrients and antibodies to protect your baby. Although your baby only gets a small amount of colostrum at each feeding, it matches the amount his or her tiny stomach can hold Your breast milk changes as your baby grows – Colostrum changes into what is called mature milk. By the third to fifth day after birth, this mature breast milk has just the right amount of fat, sugar, water, and protein to help your baby continue to grow. It is a thinner type of milk than colostrum, but it provides all of the nutrients and antibodies your baby needs.

Breast milk fights disease – The cells, hormones, and antibodies in breast milk protect babies from illness. This protection is unique; formula cannot match the chemical makeup of human breast milk. In fact, among formula-fed babies, ear infections and diarrhea are more common. Formula-fed babies also have higher risks of: 

Necrotizing (nek-roh-TEYE-zing) enterocolitis (enTUR-oh-coh-lyt-iss), a disease that affects the gastrointestinaltract in preterm infants.

Lower respiratory infections Asthma Obesity

Type 2 diabetes

 

Some research shows that breastfeeding can also reduce the risk of Type 1 diabetes, childhood leukemia, and atopic dermatitis (a type of skin rash) in babies. Breastfeeding has also been shown to lower the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Did You Know?

Breast feeding was a practice used by our ancestors. This is a picture of The Kemetic Goddess Auset feeding her son Horus

Mothers benefit from breastfeeding: Life can be easier when you breastfeed – Breastfeeding may take a little more effort than formula feeding at first. But it can make life easier once you and your baby settle into a good routine. Plus, when you breastfeed, there are no bottles and nipples to sterilize. You do not have to buy, measure, and mix formula. And there are no bottles to warm in the middle of the night! You can satisfy your baby’s hunger right away when breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can save money – Formula and feeding supplies can cost well over $1,500 each year, depending on how much your baby eats. Breastfed babies are also sick less often, which can lower health care costs. Breastfeeding can feel great – Physical contact is important to newborns. It can help them feel more secure, warm, and comforted. Mothers can benefit from this closeness, as well. Breastfeeding requires a mother to take some quiet relaxed time to bond. The skin-to-skin contact can boost the mother’s oxytocin (OKS-ee-TOH-suhn) levels. Oxytocin is a hormone that helps milk flow and can calm the mother. Breastfeeding can be good for the mother’s health, too – Breastfeeding is linked to a lower risk of these health problems in women: 1. Type 2 diabetes 2. Breast cancer 3. Ovarian cancer 5. Postpartum depression Experts are still looking at the effects of breastfeeding on osteoporosis and weight loss after birth. Many studies have reported greater weight loss for breastfeeding mothers than for those who don’t. But more research is needed to understand if a strong link exists. 1. Mothers miss less work – Breastfeeding mothers miss fewer days from work because their infants are sick less often. Ingredients: 1/2 cup coconut oil 1 tablespoon calendula flowers

1 tablespoon chamomile flowers 1/4 cup shea butter optional: 1 tsp arrowroot or zinc oxide powder or more to thicken if needed- these will add additional drying power for really bad rashes How to Make Natural Diaper Cream Heat a couple inches of water over medium high heat in a double boiler or small sauce pan. Melt the coconut oil in a glass bowl or double boiler top above the boiling water. Add the calendula and chamomile flowers and keep the heat going on low/medium for at least an hour or until coconut oil has started to turn yellow and smells of chamomile and calendula. Make sure to check the water level often and make sure it hasn’t gotten too hot or evaporated off. Carefully strain the flowers out, reserving as much of the coconut oil as possible. A fine mesh metal strainer is best for this, or a cheesecloth will work, though you’ll lose more of the coconut oil.

Make sure all visible pieces of the flower have been removed. Using a small immersion blender or even a fork to mash, mix the infused coconut oil with the shea butter and arrowroot or zinc oxide if using until it forms a thick paste. I actually have a small food processor I use for this mixture (and not for food) and when mixed in a food processor it makes an airy, velvety cream. Store in a small glass jar and apply as needed. Use a liner with cloth diapers. This is much more

concentrated and effective than store-bought versions and a little goes a really long way! It can also

be used for adult yeast infections or for healing of the perineum postpartum. Why These Ingredients? I chose each of these ingredients for a specific purpose. Coconut oil is very effective on its own for treating rash, as it is anti-fungal and very soothing to skin. Calendula has antibacterial properties and speeds skin healing while Chamomilehas anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties and is especially helpful for diaper rashes. Shea Butter, besides making the skin incredibly soft, has anti-fungal and yeast-killing properties when raw. It is high in Vitamins A and E and helps promote collagen production in the skin. It is naturally anti-inflammatory and has an SPF of 6. It also helps prevent and get rid of stretch marks. Source: http://wellnessmama.com/5062/7-natural-baby-care-recipes/

Chinese Medicine & Pregnancy

Alternative Medicine By: Myrriah Raimbault Chinese medicine is an ancient healing art that has been practiced for nearly five thousand years. The first records of gynecological writings date back to the Shang Dynasty around 1500-1000 BC. Chinese medicine is a wonderful complementary medicine to use during pregnancy and childbirth. Traditional Chinese medicine is comprised of acupuncture, acupressure, Chinese herbs, moxibustion, cupping, Oriental nutrition, Gua Sha and Tui Na massage. We will focus on a few of these therapies in this article. There are energy meridians within the body that Chinese medicine practitioner’s focus on to maintain a homeostasis. The 12 main meridians are connected in Yin/Yang pairs and each set has a corresponding element. The Gallbladder and the Liver meridians make -up the Wood element. The Fire element includes four meridians, the Heart and Small Intestine pair and the Pericardium and Triple Warmer pair. The Stomach and the Spleen meridians make-up the Earth element. The Metal element includes the Lung and Large Intestine meridian pair. Lastly, the Bladder and Kidney meridians make-up the Water element. There are also Eight Extraordinary Vessels that connect the 12 primary meridians: the Governing vessel, the Conception vessel, the Penetrating vessel, the Girdling vessel, the Yin Motility, the Yang Motility, the Yin Linking vessel and the Yang Linking vessel. Acupuncture can be used during pregnancy to keep the body at an optimum Qi or energy level. There are so many changes that the body is going through and acupuncture is used to maintain a balance within all the energy meridians. It is extremely good at relieving nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Other symptoms that acupuncture can alleviate include: heartburn, constipation, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, edema, sinusitis, anxiety, depression, insomnia, anemia, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and urinary tract infections. It can be used safely as an alternative induction method that has no side effects. {2} Acupressure, like acupuncture, it works with the meridian channels within the body.

It is a wonderful therapy to promote labor and to alleviate labor pains. For example, steady pressure on the point Large Intestine 4 (a point found between the thumb and pointer finger) can be used to take the edge off of the pain of contractions and make them stronger at the same time. Debra Betts, a leading author and practitioner, offers a free 22-page guide for anyone who wants to learn the art of acupressure. You can find a copy at: http:// acupuncture.rhizome.net.nz/downloads/Acupressure.pdf Moxibustion is a healing technique that involves burning an herb called mugwort. Moxibustion is a technique that has proven to be successful at turning a breech fetus position. The indirect heat is applied bilaterally to a point on the baby or 5th toes called BL 67. The use of moxibustion on BL 67 increases the yang activity of the uterus, which stimulates the baby to turn. Other uses of moxibustion are for backache and sciatica pain, as well as, for anemia and blood deficiency problems. It is usually combined with acupuncture or another therapy. Cupping can be used during pregnancy to purify the blood and drain the lymphatic system. Cupping involves that use of a vacuum cup that is applied to the skin and it draws up the superficial muscle layer. It is used to drive out external pathogens. It increases blood flow to the area in which it is applied, which can relieve pain in the region. Oriental Nutrition classifies food into five flavors and four natures. The five flavors are: sour, bitter, salty, sweet and pungent. The four natures are: warm, hot, cool and cold. Sour foods can aid digestion when eaten in small amounts. Bitter foods have a purgative effect and facilitate defecation. Salty foods help to hold fluids in the body. Sweet foods are yang in flavor. They are broken up into two groups: full sweet and empty sweet. The full sweet foods are warm and nourishing. The empty sweet foods are cleansing and cooling. The four natures of food can be understood when following this chart:

It is suggested that a woman’s diet is not dramatically modified during pregnancy. A significant diet change can release toxins that can affect the fetus. Simple healthy changes are good. Slight adjustments like replacing refined foods with whole foods and eating plenty of green vegetables are best. {6} Tui Na is used effectively during childbirth to achieve a nourishing and tonifying effect. Palm chaffing on the lower Kidney meridian area (the inner sole of the foot and up the ankle) stimulates Kidney Qi. This will help energy levels throughout labor. A round rubbing motion down the back on both sides of the spine stimulates and nourishes the Bladder meridian, which affects the uterus positively. Another Tui Na technique used during labor is rocking. While a woman is lying on her side a gentle rocking motion is begun on the hip area and slowly moving down her legs. This invigorates the lower meridians and acts as a gentle calming agent for the woman. Myrriah Raimbault is the founder of Peaceful Birth Haven LLC in Mechanicsburg, Pa. It is up to us, we hold the power to birth a brighter, higher, generation. For too long we have played into the idea that we have no power, that we are weak. But the truth is we are the ones that keep life going. We are the first teachers to the world, and the classroom is our wombs. It is time we take back our power and fulfill the duty that was bestowed upon us as women of the Earth. When we are with child our radiance and consciousness is the magnetic energy that attracts what soul will be granted the gift of the human body. The subtle body of the incarnating soul is attracted to or one could say, electromagnetically “chooses” the vessel. The woman, the father, the longitude and latitude, and time and space, all play into this earth plane attraction. Your vibratory frequency has a momentous affect on the entering soul. In the most positive manner when you change your frequency, you can “erase” specific karmic patterns so your new baby does NOT need to play out these karmas. How? You can consciously utilize yoga, meditation, prayers, and conscious selfreflection. In this section you will be learn how you can bring in light.

First Teacher’s You are challenged as your child’s teacher. It is an incredible responsibility to care, inspire, and teach a child 24/7. Remember to also nurture your own self: meditate, practice yoga, exercise, nap, visit with friends, and eat well. The creativity and strength to serve this responsibility can be awakened when you tune into being a woman. Your child first learns from your state of consciousness while in the womb. Everything you consciously experience, your state of mind, your relationship to the world and your rapport to your child, are all transmitted to your child and become the foundation of your child’s subconscious, which is the root of his/her personality. You remain the primary teacher for your child after birth until the third year. You however are connected with your child throughout life.

"The purest thing in the world is the heart of the mother, the heart-chakra, the center of the mother. It is the purest thing in the world. It can move God. It can move the universe. It can cause an effect beyond limitation. The heart of the mother is the greatest power of Infinity ever given to any finite being. There are certain things which can be considered the most superior things: prayer of the mother, prayer of the beloved (I wish it should say wife, but it is not written in the scriptures, so I cannot alter them), prayer of the self, and prayer of the spiritual teacher. These are four prayers which can alter and change the destiny." Yogi Bhajan, Women’s Camp 1977

Homebirth vs Hospital Births Whether you choose to have your baby at home or in the hospital, it is important that you have a pleasurable birthing experience. The purpose for this article is not to persuade you in any way, but to give you the facts needed for you to make the best decision for you and your baby. If you are considering a Natural Birth and I hope you are, it is possible for you to have a great natural birth experience whether you are in the hospital or at home. To have a natural birth experience you must prepare for it in every aspect of your life, including the spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. A woman deserves the right to choose where and how she will give birth to her child.

No matter the location you are in charge of your body and your birth experience. Choosing to have your baby at home or in a hospital solely depends on the health of the mother and baby as well as your comfort. Some women feel that the hospital is the safest way to have a baby, but if you are like me being in the comfort of your own home during childbirth seems like heaven. Here are some facts on birthing from home or in a hospital

Homebirths are different from a hospital birth in many ways. With home birth you are in control of your environment. You can set the tone and mood of your home. You are free to move, walk, or be naked. You are free to eat while Pregnancy and birth are normal life events for most women. To this end, interventions should you’re in labor. You can surround yourself with be kept to a minimum wherever possible. A ba- family something that will be hard to do in a by who is born gently and welcomed by warm, hospital setting where you are only limited to 2 caring parents receives the best possible start to 3 guest. And finally my favorite part of the in life. Women who are well prepared in their homebirth experience would be the fact that minds, bodies and spirits can experience birth as a profoundly moving and empowering event. you are already at home. With a homebirth

there are no time constraint – real or assumed. We all need to remember, birth is a natural occurrence, your body knows how to birth your baby, you just have to trust yourself and you don’t need a hospital, a nurse, or any other personnel for it to happen. Homebirths are facilitated by a midwife, this was an ancient practice that our ancestors left for us to continue. A midwife’s role will begin long before your due date. A midwife will provide regular checkups and refer you to a doctor for prenatal exams, such as ultrasounds. Your midwife will see you throughout your pregnancy, tracking your baby's growth and checking you for any possible complications. Because prenatal visits with a midwife are longer and more relaxed than in a traditional medical setting, you and your midwife will develop a much more personal relationship than is typical with a doctor. When it's time for your baby's birth, your midwife will come to your home with any equipment that may be necessary during the birth. She will monitor you throughout childbirth, typically checking the baby's heart rate with a hand-held Doppler, as well as monitoring the baby's position and the progress of your labor. She will stay with you throughout your entire labor, helping to keep you comfortable and making sure your labor is progressing as it should. After your baby is born, your midwife will clean up any mess, examine you and your baby and help you to try to start nursing. She will stay for a little while to make sure you and your baby are happy and healthy. She will also handle your postpartum care.

Hospital Births When it comes to hospital births, they are more controlled. The environment is pretty sterile although delivery of a baby is considered to be a “clean” procedure. When you are admitted to the hospital for labor, whether it is induced or natural timing, intravenous IV access is obtained, and you are placed on fetal monitors and a transducer that monitors your contractions. You are usually confined to a bed, especially if the membrane of your amniotic sack has been ruptured (this can happen naturally or the doc-

tor can “break your water with an amniotic hook), and you are then limited to ice chips. Your food and fluid intake is limited in case you have to have a Cesarean Section or other emergency that would require anesthesia. If you would like, pain medication is readily available in two forms. The first is Nubain, a short acting narcotic that lessens pain perception and makes the pain more tolerable. Second is a longer acting epidural that is administered by an anesthesiologist through the space between the spinal cord and the outer membranes, this space being called the epidural space. The epidural, when working properly, dulls the sensations from your stomach to your legs or feet. These are all pretty standard features that come with the hospital. Another thing that seem to be standard is the administration of Pitocen, which is a medication that is started to help your contractions become strong and regular. Pitocen is made to simulate Oxytocin, which is a hormone that causes muscles to contract in the uterus. Although many woman birth naturally with Pitocin, it makes your labor pains stronger and more painful then normal. If you choose a hospital setting for your birth it is possible for you to have a natural birth you will need a good relationship with your doctor or hospital midwife, a great birthing team or doula and a birthing plan. Overall where you choose to give birth is up to you. In either setting you can have a great experience you just have to prepare and stay positive. Every mom deserves to have a powerful birth experience.

With so much information out these days on vaccinations and their safety for our children. I know there are a lot of parents in limbo on choosing what is best for their child. I do not vaccinate my children and they the of most happiest healthy children I have ever seen . Was that decision hard for me? Yes, it was at first, but after researching and talking with parents & doctors who chose not to vaccinate their children I found out a world of new information that I think will be of assistance to any parent who is considering not vaccinating. There is major controversy and debate over vaccination. Are they safe? Are they not safe? Where is the truth? As parents our biggest responsibility are our children’s live and keeping them safe. Today the average American child receives 16 vaccinations throughout their childhood according the Center for Disease Control. On one hand of the vaccination debate you have the argument that vaccines protect us from 16 infectious diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella (German measles), varicella (chickenpox), hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib), polio, in-

fluenza (flu), and pneumococcal disease. On the other hand you have concerned parents who feel the vaccination are not safe and cause more harm than the disease it was created to stop. Now my purpose is to give you the facts and let you choose what is best for you and your child/children. You are the parent and it is your birth right to protect your children, know the facts, and trust yourself. What is a Vaccine? “A vaccine is a substance that attempts to protect people against disease. To do that, vaccines are made from the virus or other pathogen (germ) that causes the dis

-ease that vaccine is designed to fight. The purpose of the fight is to develop immunity”.-Stephanie Cave, M.D., F.A.A.F.P. Two Types of Immunity Natural immunity: Natural immunity is gained when viruses or bacteria (pathogens or antigens) enter the body, and the dis-ease progresses normally.. During the dis-ease process, the body produces antibodies and dis-ease fighting cells, resulting in a natural immunity that is usually permanent. When a child is naturally exposed to, say, the measles, the immune system responds immediately. Various immune system cells begin to weaken and eliminate the invading pathogen and send signals to other cells in the system, triggering them into action. Depending on the strength of the immune system the body will reduce or even eliminate the disease before the symptoms shows. In fact, experts have shown that the frequency of asymptomatic (having no symptom of dis-ease) infections outnumber clinical illnesses by at least a hundredfold, simply because the immune system has tremendous natural abilities to fight disease. Artificial (Vaccinated) Immunity: Vaccinated immunity is artificial and often temporary. When vaccines are injected into the body, they bypass many of the body’s initial immune system defenses. In a sense, the vaccines, along with the toxic additives in the solution, is thrust into the body unannounced. This “surprise” forces the body to over-

compensate by producing more disease-fighting cells than it normally would if the infection were natural. This over-stresses the body in two ways – it not only overproduces immune system cells, it must also fight the infection (introduced by the vaccine), along with the chemicals and other additives in the vaccine. So looking at the two types of immunity which do you feel is the better defense system? Now you may wonder, if Natural immunity is better, why on earth we would need vaccines. To answer that you have to go back to how we were introduced to vaccines. Do you have to vaccinate your children? The answer to that is no, there are no federal laws that require you to vaccinate your children, but state laws act as such. This may seem surprising because everyone always assumes that vaccinations are required. Many parents are unaware that they can get an exemption from vaccinating their child based on medical, philosophical, or religious reasons, depending on the laws of their particular state. Vaccine Ingredients: The biggest red flag when it comes to vaccines are the ingredients that are used to create the vaccine. For chemical profiles and definitions, visit http:// www.scorecard.org/. (Can you guess now why sensitivity to MSG is so common?) According to this report which was contracted by the FDA the following are symptoms that they found in reaction to MSG. A. Burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest B. Numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back C. Animal Viruses: Some of these can be Amphotericin B: MME definition - "a particularly alien to the human body. The

most frequently documented and publicized example is the monkey virus SV40. This is harmless in monkeys, but inject it into a human and it can cause cancer – in the brain (tumors), bone (e.g. multiple myeloma), lungs (mesothelioma) and lymphoid tissue (lymphoma). It has appeared in people born in the last 20 years (The Journal of Infectious Diseases, Sep 1999; 180:884-887), long after the manufacturer claimed to have "cleaned up" the polio vaccine in which it was found. Such cases include the late Alexander Horwin, both of whose parents tested negative for SV40, therefore recent cases cannot just be blamed on inheritance from parents who received the vaccine (see www.ouralexander.org). Human Viruses: The viruses against which the vaccine is supposed to protect are frequently said to be "killed", "inactivated" or "attenuated". This is a myth. The main method used to inactivate viruses is treatment with formaldehyde, whose effectiveness is only limited, and even then only temporary - once the brew is injected into the body and disperses, it is documented in orthodox medical literature that these "killed" viruses can revert to their former virulence.(References for this are available.) Mycoplasma: These are microscopic organisms lacking rigid cell walls and considered to be the smallest free-living organisms. Many are pathogenic and one species is a cause of mycoplasma pneumonia which interestingly is noted to occur "in children and young adults" (Mosby's Medical Dictionary). So, are these only in vaccines by mistake as contaminants? No, believe it or not, they are deliberately included as adjuvants, i.e. to increase the

immune system's "response" to the vaccine. Genetically modified yeast: This is in the hepatitis B vaccine. Given the controversy over the ingestion of genetically modified foods, how much less safe, do you think, is the injection of them, particularly considering what follows below? Foreign DNA: This DNA is from such organisms as various animals, animal/ human viruses, fungi and bacteria. It has been documented that the injecting foreign DNA can cause it or some of it to be incorporated into the recipient's DNA (see 'Immunization' Against Diseases for Children). Remember, nature has not experienced such a direct invasion as this before, so can you be sure that it would have developed a way to protect your body against it?

Alternative to Vaccination? HOMOEOPROPHYLAXIS Sometimes called Homeopathic Vaccinations, Homeoprophylaxis (HP) is an alternative method of protecting against childhood diseases without the potential side effects of vaccinations. The Basic Childhood Disease Homeoprophylaxis program includes the following: 

Pertussin: Whooping Cough

Pneumococcinum: Pneumonia

Lathyrus sativus: Polio

Haemophilus: Hib

Meningococcinum: Meningitis



Tetanus Toxin: Tetanus



Parotidinum: Mumps



Morbillinum: Measles/Rubella

What is Homeoprophylaxis? Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine which stimulates the body to heal itself by using very minute amounts of natural substances from the plant, mineral, or animal worlds prepared in a very particular way. Homeopathy is safe and effective. It has been around for nearly 200 years--longer than western medicine has been around in its present form. It is individualized for each person. With over 2,500 homeopathic remedies to choose from, it is more likely than not that you will have a different remedy for your particular pathology than another person would have for the same diagnosis? It treats all planes--mental, emotional and physical.

In 2007 and 2008, the Cuban Government utilized homeopathy to prevent Leptospirosis, or swamp fever. tions, thoughts, and spirits. Dis-ease does not have life unless you give it life. By treating dis-ease from a physical point, you never get to the root on why it manifested itself, so no matter how many pills, vaccines, or surgeries you get you are still subjected to illness. Understanding this helps us to look at health in a holistic sense comprising of the mind, body, and soul. As parent to bring our children up in a dis-ease free environment we must have better thoughts, better feelings, have a better diet, our immune systems get weak when we are subjected to negative energy. Our immune systems are powerful when operating at its highest potential it can defeat any potential threat, but when it weakened we are subjected to a number of problems. So the bottom line is knowing the facts, asking questions and trusting that you know what is best for your child. Are vaccine good? You be the judge.

Tips for Natural Labor 1. Find a Soothing Environment Your birth setting must feel safe to you. It should have space to walk and bathe, as well as a variety of furniture and devices to enhance movement and pain relief: a CD player, rocking chair, birth ball, low stool, squatting bar and soft bed. It should also have policies that encourage you to try a variety of positions. Access to appropriate medical care is crucial if problems arise. 2. Choose Your Team Carefully Knowledgeable, caring midwives, doctors, nurses, partners, loved ones and doulas create a supportive birth team. When you’re treated with respect and patience, stress and inhibitions decrease, and you can more easily find your best coping mechanisms. 3. Learn About Labor Find out everything you can about labor from books, magazines, Web sites, videos, classes, a hospital tour and discussions with your health-care provider, doula, family and friends. Familiarize yourself with the procedures and customs at your hospital or birth center, and ask about flexibility. Such discussions are best had before labor. More knowledge means fewer surprises.

4. Express Your Fears Are you worried about pain and labor, needles, medicines or losing control? Speak with a knowledgeable and trusted friend, childbirth educator or doula. Voicing your concerns can bring relief as well as practical solutions to your concerns. Stating your preferences in a birth plan can also help calm fears. 5. Practice Rhythmic Breathing Breathe fully in a slow rhythm during contractions. Release tension with each exhalation and try moaning. Also try taking quick breaths, about one every 2 to 3 seconds (20 to 30 per minute). If you lose your rhythm, your partner needs to help you regain it with eye contact, rhythmic hand or head movements, or by talking you through contractions. 6. Use Imagery and Visualization Focusing on something that makes you happy (like your partner’s face, an inspirational picture or favorite object) engages your senses and decreases your awareness of pain. Listen to music, a soothing voice or a recording of ocean waves, and imagine yourself in a relaxing environment. 7. Take a Warm Shower or Bath A warm shower is soothing, especially if you can sit on a stool and direct a handheld showerhead onto your abdomen or back. Bathing in warm water can relax you, and it may even speed up labor. 8. Keep Moving Move around as much as you can. Walk, lean, sway, rock and squat. Some positions will be more comfortable than others.

9. Seek Relief with Warm or Cool Compresses Place a warm pack on your lower abdomen, groin, lower back or shoulders during labor. A cold pack or latex glove filled with ice chips can soothe painful areas. Cool cloths relieve a sweaty face, chest or neck. 10. Indulge in Gentle Touch or Massage Whether it’s someone holding your hand, stroking your cheek or hair, or patting your hand or shoulder, touch conveys reassurance, caring and understanding. Have your partner or doula massage you with light or firm strokes using oil or lotion.
