It’s that time of year again Back to School. No matter what area of life your at the back to school season affects us all. Whether we are college students, parents of students or commuters. School is back in session and Natural Woman Magazine has created a back to school guide that will have you feeling healthy, beautiful, and we have even come up with some money saving tips that your pockets will appreciate. Now I of all people know that school isn’t for everyone. I never completed college, I took the entrepreneurial path and what an rewarding path it is to start my own business and help others start their own too. So if your not going back to school no worries, there are still plenty of good information Natural Woman has to offer in this issue, so keep turning pages. We dedicate this issue to the National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Natural Woman Magazine is an advocate in ensuring the health of our planet and its occupants. Childhood Obesity is a very serious issue that must be addressed for the sake of our younger generations. Cincinnati, Ohio – In recognition of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month the Mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio John Cranley has made September the official Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. In Celebration Inside Body, Natural W oman Magazine, & the Pleasant Ridge Community Center has launched the Take the Challenge Healthy Food & Fitness Expo. The Take the Challenge event is part of a national effort to eradicate childhood obesity in the United States and ensure young people get a healthy start in life.

The financial implications add up to a sobering $14 billion per year in direct health care costs alone. Americans spend approximately nine percent of their total medical costs on obesity- related illnesses. Additionally, there are psychosocial consequences that can hinder academic and social functioning and persist into adulthood.

Take the Challenge Healthy Food & Fitness Expo is a 1 day event free. Created to bring awareness to the community about Childhood Obesity. This event will include entertainment, vendors, healthy food demonstrations, health presentations, exercise presentations, free smoothies and, healthy snacks, special guest speakers, and so much more. The Take the Challenge Healthy Food & Fitness Expo will take place on October 11, 2014 at the Pleasant Ridge Community Center, 5915 Ridge Ave, Cincinnati, Ohio 45239 During the past four decades, obesity rates have soared among all age groups, increasing more than fourfold among children ages six to 11. More than 23 million children and teenagers (31.8 percent) ages two to 19 are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic. “The growing rate of childhood obesity in our country is alarming,” said insert name of spokesperson, organization name. “National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and insert name of program/activity recognizes the serious threat obesity poses to

Winter weather in the U.S. typically means cold, dry conditions that can aggravate your skin. You need homemade skin care, which include natural remedies for every skin condition. Here are just a few ideas that are easy and affordable to help you create home remedies for acne any skin conditions that you may find yourself dealing with.

Buttermilk: buttermilk contains lactic acid, one of the hyrdoxy acids. These compounds act as exfoliants on the skin, breaking apart and removing dry, dead skin cells for a more fresher look

Shes Butter: Shea butter can alleviate eczema, sunburn and insect bites. Look for products that are 100 percent shea butter and don’t use any product other added ingredients.

Banana Deep Conditioner for Dry Hair Bananas are one of the better kept secrets when it comes to treating dry hair, as they are rich in beneficial vitamins such as potassium and Vitamin A. Olive oil is used to help penetrate and add moisture to parched strands. Greek yogurt will provide the hair with a healthy balance of moisture and protein to help soften dry hair strands.

You will need: 1 ripe banana 2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup tablespoons plain Greek yo足 gurt 1 tablespoon pure honey plastic conditioning cap How to Use: Mix banana and EVOO in a blender until very smooth, then add remaining ingredients and mix well until there are no lumps. Pour mixture through a strainer to remove any extra lumps or banana pulp before applying to your hair. Apply to wet hair, cover with plastic conditioning cap and leave on for a minimum of 30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

Eating healthy foods is important to keeping a healthy body throughout life. In todays busy world the fast food convenience has replaced the good ole’ tradition of preparing home cooked meals. With the healthy food trend growing at rapid speeds the fast food chain is slowly catching up, but finding healthy quality foods for your natural body maybe a bit difficult not to mention it can be expensive. But no worries our Natural Woman team has come up with some easy option for anyone whether you are in college or a busy single mom on the go. Getting into the habit of preparing your own meals may take some of your time, but you will save more and gain less.




Chia – Chia seeds are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and both soluble and insoluble fiber. These powerful little seeds help control blood glucose levels, are anti-inflammatory, aid in hydration, and also contain many antioxidants. Dark Chocolate – The flavonols in chocolate improve blood vessel function, which in turn improves cognitive function and memory. Chocolate also improves mood, can ease pain, and is full of antioxidants. Nuts – Nuts, especially walnuts and almonds, are extremely good for the brain and nervous system. They are great sources of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, vitamin B6, and vitamin E. Vitamin E has been shown to prevent many forms of dementia by protecting the brain from free radicals, and it improves brain power. Nuts contain some anti-nutrients, like phytic acid. Since we consume a relatively small amount of nuts, this isn’t a huge problem, but they are far healthier if you soak them overnight (about 8 hours) before eating them. Quinoa – Like beans, legumes, and whole grains, quinoa is an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and fiber to balance blood sugar while providing the essential glucose the brain craves. Quinoa is also a good source for iron to keep the blood oxygenated and B vitamins to balance mood and protect blood vessels. It is also gluten free for those with sensitivities to this protein. And, like most seeds, grains, and nuts, contains phytic acid. Quinoa also contains saponins; it should be soaked overnight before cooked. Red Cabbage – Red cabbage is full of polyphenols, a powerful antioxidant that benefits the brain and heart. Red cabbage also has glucosinolates, compounds that fight cancer. Rosemary – Rosemary has been shown to improve memory and cognitive function with its scent alone. It improves blood flow to the brain, improves mood, and acts as an antioxidant. Rosemary is also a powerful detoxifier, fights cancer, boosts energy, and combats aging of the skin. Spinach – Spinach can prevent or delay dementia. The nutrients in spinach prevent damage to DNA, cancer cell growth, and tumor growth, but also slow the effects of aging on the brain. Spinach is also a good source of folate and vitamin E.


Avocado – Avocados are a source of monounsaturated fats, omega 3, and omega 6 fatty acids. These increase blood flow to the brain, lower cholesterol, and aid in the absorption of antioxidants. Avocados also come with many antioxidants of their own, including vitamin E, which protect the body and the brain from free radical damage. They are also a good source of potassium and vitamin K—both protect the brain from the risk of stroke. Coconut Oil – Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides that the body uses for energy, leaving glucose for the brain. It also seems to have a beneficial effect on blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. Anything that benefits the heart and circulation also benefits the brain. Coconut oil acts as an anti-inflammatory as well and has been linked to helping prevent Alzheimer’s and dementia. Beans and Legumes – Beans and legumes are excellent sources of complex carbohydrates. These complex carbohydrates are also mixed with fiber that slows absorption, giving us a steady supply of glucose for the brain without the risks of sugar spikes associated with many other sugar sources. Beans and legumes are also rich in folate—a B vitamin critical to brain function—and essential omega fatty acids. Blueberries – These berries are antioxidant powerhouses, protecting the brain from oxidative damage and stress that lead to premature aging, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. The flavonoids in blueberries also improve the communication between neurons, improving memory, learning, and all cognitive function, including reasoning, decision making, verbal comprehension, and numerical anility. Other dark berries are good for the brain too, like blackberry, açai, and goji berries.


Ingredients 1 extra large Napa cabbage 1 large red bell pepper 2 large carrots 2 medium cucumbers 1 (12 oz) package extra firm tofu (always choose Organic tofu if possible!) 1 bunch of cilantro 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1 1/2 tablespoons GF low sodium tamari 1 teaspoon honey 2 cloves crushed garlic 1 lime 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes- adjust to heat preference! coconut oil

Method Thoroughly coat grill pan in coconut oil. Drain tofu, slice in half and press with cloth until dry, squeezing out as much moisture as possible. Grill tofu 5 minutes on each side or until crispy. Remove from heat and slice into strips. To create the peanut dipping sauce combine peanut butter, sesame oil, tamari, garlic, juice of 1 lime, honey, red pepper flakes. Mix well. Add water to achieve desired consistency and additional salt to taste. To prepare vegetables use a julienne peeler, creating vegetable noodles out of carrots and cucumbers. De-seed and cut bell pepper into match sticks. Wash and chop cilantro. Rinse and dry cabbage leaves cutting off the majority of white stalk. Layer tofu, bell pepper, carrots, cilantro and cucumber in cabbage leaves and roll up! Use peanut sauce or toothpicks to secure leaves if necessary Recipe Courtesy of:http://ahouseinthehills.com/


Ingredients 1 1/2 pounds or range free chicken breast Cumin Spice 1 jar of your favorite salsa 1 Bunch of lettuce

1 pack of soft tortillas Method: Place chicken in the bottom of the crockpot Sprinkle Cumin and your favorite seasoning over chicken. Pour salsa on top. Cook on low (for 6 to 8 hours) or high (for 4 hours) Just before serving , use two forks to shred the chicken. Sir to evenly distribute salsa throughout chicken. Vegan Alternative use your favorite brand of Faux Meat from your local grocery


1 cups creamy peanut butter ¼ cup unsalted butter ¼ cup light brown sugar 1¼ cups powdered sugar 4 cups milk chocolate chips (two 11.5-oz bags) ¼ cup vegetable shortening

1. Line a mini-muffin tin with paper liners; set aside. Line a baking with parchment paper; set aside. 2. In a medium saucepan, combine the peanut butter, butter and brown sugar over medium heat. Heat until completely melted and starting to bubble a little, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat. Add the powdered sugar a ¼ cup at a time, stirring until completely combined with the peanut butter mixture after each addition. Set aside and let cool. 3. Meanwhile, melt the chocolate chips and shortening together in the microwave on 50% power in 30-second increments, until completely melted, stirring after each burst. 4. Using a small cookie scoop or a couple of teaspoons, spoon melted chocolate into the bottom of each lined muffin cup. 5. Use a heaping teaspoon to scoop out the peanut butter mixture. Roll it into a ball, and then flatten it slightly into a disk. Place on the prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Once finished with all of the peanut butter mixture, refrigerate both the muffin tins and the peanut butter patties for about 30 minutes. 6. Place a peanut butter patty on top of each chocolate-lined muffin tin. Then use a scoop or spoon to add more melted chocolate on top and around each peanut butter patty. (If the melted chocolate firmed up, just pop it back into the microwave at 50% power for 30 seconds or so to re-melt.) 7. Refrigerate again for 30 minutes, then they're ready to serve! Store in the refrigerator or freezer. You can keep at room temperature in an airtight container if you're going to serve them the same day, but they'll start to get soft if not at cool room temperature. If you expect to make graduation day, be sure to make it to class. In college there are parties and events happening all the time. It can be very easy for you to party too much and miss class. In college your professors are not going to baby you, you will not get a reminder or make up day. If you don’t show up you will pay the price

There is a lot of peer pressure in college. It can be very easy for you to get caught up in the wrong crowd. Especially of your away from home and live on campus. Make friends with people who share your same interest

It can be very easy to get behind on your school assignments in college. Unlike high school you do not have the luxury of having your parents and teachers making sure you stay up om your work. In college you are on your own, its your responsibility to get assignments in on time and keep friendly open communication with your professors.

Have a Back Up Food Plan Don’t Break Under Pressure Get Involved If you live on campus there will be moments where food will be scarce. Unless your one of the lucky ones and have a week and weekend food plan. Or a car to take you place to get food.

Do not spend four or more years in college and not be affiliated with any groups or organization. In this world its not about what you know its more about who you know. Get involved with groups and organizations that fit your interest. This can be very useful especially for our resume’

Avoid the Drama The drama does not end in high school, be prepared to see a lot of dramatic scenes go on in college. My best advice is to steer clear of the drama and the people who bring it.

Avoid Going In Blind If you have a close friend going to college with you. It would be wise to become roommates with someone you know. It's much easier working out certain issues with people you have some relationship with than with a complete stranger. Do not waste anytime putting in a request to become roommates. I recently watched an episode from Oprah's Life Class with guest Bishop T.D. Jakes. He said something that will stay with me always. "Surround yourself with people who have your same rhythm", because it does make a difference. Surround yourself with people who have goals and have the will and ambition not to give up on them. That way you both can feed off of each other because the desire success is contagious. Going In Blind You never know what to expect so be prepared for anything, but always hope for the best. The most essential advice I could give you is express your boundaries. You can't blame people for crossing lines you never pointed out from the beginning. Make those boundaries clear and simple for them to understand. Let the positive light inside of you shine through creating the right energy and attitude when you speak with them. Allow them to also be clear on what they need from you as a roommate, because it's not all about what you want. This discussion will lay down the ground work of what your intentions and

A belief is a thought has been repeated over and over until the thinker perceives it to be true. Racism is a belief that has been taught to society, to keep the people divided. We all play into the game of racism especially if you are the victim. As an African American I have had my time with racism, but through my conscious evolution I have begun to understand that racism is a disease that affects both parties involved.

When dealing with racism as the victim its important to understand racism only works if you accept the belief you are different. As dark people we have been taught to see ourselves as different as if we do not belong. This belief is only believable when you do not know yourself, or know where you come from. Now I do not want to get into our History as a people, because we have Hidden Colors for that but, what I do want to plant in your mind is the game that is being played on the platform of racism and how each and everyone of us can put an end to it once and for all.


Whether your black or white if you are racist or feel like you’re a victim of racism your in the game. In order for the system of racism to work you have to have both of these pieces. Remember racism is just a belief that we keep alive through our thoughts and emotions. Some people may debate that in order to end racism you have to get rid of the white man, but in reality the key here is to simply stop feeding your mind with the program of racism. Think it out of existence.

It’s no secret that mainstream media and entertainment feeds off of our negative energy. Everything you see on the screen is planting seeds of fear, sexual misuse, abuse, and violence into your mind. For example the incident in Ferguson , MI was a very tragic story that received major media attention. The problem is incidents like Ferguson happen all the time, but you never here about them. Why was Ferguson so important? The media controls the people whether you want to believe it or not. Racism is a tool that keep people on a hate vibration you are either going to hate the white man that racist or your going to hate yourself because of racism.

Your culture is key to breaking free from the inferiority complex racism plays in your mind. This is especially true for people of African descent. Without your culture you do not have an identity , your culture tells you who you are and where you are going. Being grounded in your culture allows you to be empowered by your culture. Knowing that you come from royalty feels a lot better then knowing you come from slaves. Know Thyself

Be empowered by who you are. We live in an abundant universe and everyone here has a special purpose to fulfill. We are all important, and no one has the right to tell you anything different. Racism can only affect you if you let it. It is time we begin to think beyond the game and establish something new.

The number one way to eliminate freedom is racism to think it out of existence. Every thought from everyone who plays in the racism cycle is feeding it energy to stay alive. If we are ever going to eliminate this vicious cycle we are going to have to stop giving it our power. Stop giving it your attention!

The power of wealth building begins in the practice of gratitude. Gratitude attracts wealth. What does wealth and gratitude have to do with each other? Its simple, it has everything to do with it. The practice of gratitude begins with being grateful for all the things you currently have - family, friends, experiences, and even material possessions. Wealth is much more than material things. It is the presence of having a life filled with happiness in being, doing, and having what you want in life. All too often, we fail to appreciate what we already have and because of this we continue to attract the things we do not want. Complaining, blaming, or venting brings the tidal wave of negative energy . Feeling gratitude creates opportunities for excellence. You will experience life in a new way and become a magnet for health, success and wealth. Energy follows thought. The more positive and excellent your feelings and thoughts, the more abundance you will magnetize.

Learn to live in the moment. Life is a wonderful adventure filled with enriching experiences and endless possibilities. Don’t just go through the motions of repetitive activities and boring tasks. Being a mindless zombie can make you more likely to take things for granted. Instead of doing something just for the sake of doing it, actually make an effort to savor the experience. Immerse yourself with inspirational thoughts and motivational quotes. Your feeling of gratitude is a direct manifestation of your environment. If you feel more driven, more passionate, and more alive, you are also bound to appreciate more, live more, and be more content.

You’ve heard of Motivation Boards, Disaster Boards and Dream Boards, so why can’t you have Gratitude Boards as well? Instead of posting your dreams and your disasters, it’s better for you to post the ideals that you feel grateful for. Just a hint: focus more on people and experiences rather than on materialistic stuff that don’t necessarily last very long. Control your thoughts. Of course you have the power to control what you’re thinking of! Consider this exercise, for example: if you find yourself thinking more and more selfentitled, stop. If you find yourself repeating negative junk, stop. And if you find yourself comparing yourself to other people, stop. You are given consciousness. Make use of it wisely. Always resist the temptation of comparing yourself with other people. As humans, we have the natural tendency to compare ourselves with others with the hope of attaining satisfaction. Right now, I’m telling you that this activity does not help you feel to be more grateful in life. It does the opposite! You will always be meeting someone richer, more attractive, more successful and more intelligent than you are. Comparison will just rob you off your self-worth and make you feel inferior to others! Don’t do it, please. Watch your words. You can feel more grateful in life if you are using more positive and more enlightening words. Words that stress you and make you feel worthless should definitely be eliminated. Appreciate what you have right now.

The happiest people are those who are contented with what they currently have, not with what they lack. Apply an abundance mindset in your way of thinking – every action begins with the mind, after all. Acknowledge the past, but move on. I’m not saying that you should ignore the past, naturally. That’s impossible. What I’m saying is that you should be aware of your past mistakes, past heartbreaks, past failures and past frustrations. Use them as stepping stones. Acknowledge the fact that

they did happen in the past and utilize the lessons you learned from them in the present so that you won’t experience them in the future. Be more grateful of the bad as well! Help other people and touch their lives meaningfully.

There really is nothing more rewarding in this world than helping other people improve their lives. This activity doesn’t only make you feel great about yourself – it also makes you value what you have in your life. Go on and sponsor a child’s education. Give your old clothes and books to a charitable institution. Donate your time and offer to teach children for free once a week. Hold feeding programs with non-profit organizations. Every little thing counts. You have the ability to make yourself feel to be more grateful in your life – never let anybody tell you different.
