U.S. Offshore Wind Marketplace Maturing Faster than Expected Liz Burdock President and CEO, Business Network for Offshore Wind

For five years, The Business Network for Offshore Wind (Network) has supported the launch of the U.S. offshore wind industry, but now I am proud to say we support ‘the advancement of offshore wind in the U.S.’. The U.S. has 1.8 GWs of offshore wind in the pipeline, and we expect that number to double next year to more than 4 GWs. The Network is a membership-based organization with over 200 members.

Our focus is to provide education and create partnerships between businesses and to build the offshore wind supply chain.

We follow U.S. offshore market development every day and we think of ourselves as U.S. market experts. We provide our members with insights and updates by covering all state and federal developments.

The need for offshore wind is compelling in the U.S. because over two-thirds of the population lives along three coasts (38% East Coast; 16% Pacific Coast; and 12% Gulf Coast). This creates a huge electricity load next to areas with great wind speeds and water depths.

In America, states drive energy policy.

The importance of states creating the U.S. offshore wind market cannot be overstated. States request the federal government to convene a stakeholder task force for a wind energy area off of their coast. The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) de-conflicts the site and leases the area through an auction. Developers buy the lease through an auction process.

The BOEM Leasing Process has established 13 wind areas that have

been leased to developers representing 17 GWs of offshore wind potential. By the end of 2018 there will be two more leases in Massachusetts; and then four areas will be leased in New York.

Currently, there is one completed project and four projects under development in the U.S. The recently announced Massachusetts’ Vineyard Wind project will soon start to select some of their Tier 1 contractors – including foundation suppliers and installation contractors.

They hope to start construction next year and begin delivering clean energy in 2021.

The U.S. is moving forward and seizing the opportunities provided by the offshore wind energy marketplace and U.S. offshore development will reach 8GWs if not more by 2030. U.S. supply chain capacity remains an issue and my organization is working to bring European expertise to partner with U.S. businesses.

Marius Ottolini Installation engineer, Heerema Marine Contractors

During Offshore Energy Marius Ottolini, installation engineer at Heerema Marine Contractors, won the Offshore Energy Young Engineer Award.

This award recognizes outstanding achievements of an engineer under the age of 36.

Jury chair Didi te Gussinklo Ohmann, operations director, Van Oord Offshore Wind, commented: “Marius received his award for being one of the big drivers within Heerema in the development of silent foundations, with the aim to reduce or eliminate piling noise. Such noise can affect the marine environment to a substantial degree. He has developed several alternatives which are a step change in foundation design; in particular because the foundation can be installed

“There are many talented young professionals, so I am very honored to have been selected.” Comments Ottolini during an interview earlier this month.

After finishing his is Master of Science, Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Delft, Ottolini started working as a Geotechnical Engineer with Heerema Marine Contractors five years ago.

Silent foundations

Last year he made the switch to Installation Engineer within the renewable department.

“I jumped at the opportunity to work in silent foundation. Piling offshore is very noisy, which is harmful to underwater life.

Of course there are requirements to bring noise to a minimum, but at Heerema we want to go one step further and that is to

eliminate all noise.” Ottolini works on this project fulltime and has already developed various alternatives that influence design and foundation. “In doing so I not only look at the technical aspects, but I also regard the whole chain. Sometimes you have to really zoom in on technical details, but it is also important to see the bigger picture and to remember the fact you are looking at a smaller part in the complete offshore industry”, comments Ottolini.

Further ambitions

Heerema will start testing the new silent piling technique next year and hopes to tender this in 2020. Will Ottolini remain part of the project until then? “I think I am better at developing new, weird and wonderful ideas. So really working at the start of a new idea versus checking all the last details in the final stages. Others are better at this and probably enjoy this more.” What are this talented young engineer’s further ambitions? Ottolini considers the questions and quips: “I am keen to keep on learning and developing and have a hunger for new ideas and knowledge. Where that will take me, I do not know. This project was also an opportunity that came my way and I do not believe in planning everything. The most important thing, I believe, is to jump at the opportunities when you have the chance and to take risks. Trust that it will all work out.”

Contributors to the energy transition If there were two key words spoken during the OEEC 2018 conference it was energy and transition. During the event we spoke to many visitors on why they were attending and what they were looking for. Let us introduce you to one of our 2018 visitors here.

We spoke with Nermina Saracevic during the Offshore Wind Conference.

Currently she is a graduate student in M.Sc. Wind Power Project Management at Uppsala University in Sweden. “This Master program is a unique blend of technical and managerial courses that fitted perfectly into my non-engineering background.” Nermina hold B.Sc. in Political Sciences and Economics from Cairo University in Egypt and MA in Development and International Cooperation from Bologna University in Italy. “For the past ten years, I worked in the Directorate for European Integration in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where I come from. I focused on the programming and coordination of EU financial assistance, supporting socio-economic development and EU pre-accession process of my country. My work involved infrastructure project planning and development in the transport, energy, environment and social sectors in close cooperation with the European Commission, European development and investment banks, international agencies and the national stakeholders”, Nermina explains.

Most pressing challenge

A great and interesting career. Why did you decide to switch? “Ever since my university days, my academic and professionals endeavors have been aimed at some sort of transition and improvement of a governmental system, organization or social environment.

One of the sectors I covered in my previous job was the energy, where I became aware of urgent actions needed to sustain climate change and ensure sustainable and clean electricity production worldwide. I perceived this as the most pressing challenge now for our 6

I became aware of urgent actions needed to sustain climate change and ensure sustainable and clean electricity production worldwide civilization, so last year I decided to shift my career to renewable energy sources and to wind power, in particular.

Nermina enthusiastically goes on: “Wind resources are available almost everywhere onshore as well offshore and it is amazing how much we can use the technological innovation to optimize extraction and conversion of the wind power into electricity.” She also switched to renewable energy resources because of her field of interest in politics, economics and cooperation. “As many other countries in the world, my country is also heavily dependent on the fossil fuels for electricity generation, which has hazardous impact on the human health and nature due to greenhouse gas emissions and in a long run is not sustainable. Besides that, increasing renewable energy sources in energy systems worldwide can contribute to reduce ongoing conflicts over fossil fuel sources and also enable less developed countries to access cheaper electricity, supporting their economic development.”

Contributing to the energy transition That is why Nermina wants to contribute.

“I believe that the energy transition from

a carbon dominated to a system with the high percentage of renewable energy source is a battle to be won over the next two decades and I want to contribute to that goal. With each installed MW there is a concrete, tangible impact and the change towards energy transition that in the end of the day makes you feel happy and fulfilled to be part of this industry.”

Despite her enthusiasm and drive, she explains that she had to go a very steep learning curve.

“It was a challenge to master engineering areas such as wind turbine technology, wind resource assessment and wind turbine grid integration over a short period of time”, says Nermina.

Comparing floating offshore wind concepts

She is currently doing an internship at Van Oord Offshore Wind BV, as part of her Master graduation program. “For my graduation project, I chose to compare the floating offshore wind concepts in terms of electricity production and costs.

I performed simulation of electricity production of spar-buoy and semisubmersible floating offshore wind turbines in an aero-elastic code, ASHES.

INTERVIEW

ASHES can be used to analyze behavior of onshore as well as offshore turbines (including floaters) in a fast and userfriendly way, coupled with advanced visualization effects. I analyzed AEP for the both floating wind systems under the same environmental conditions in the North Sea to check the differences in the electricity output related to the floater motions in heave and pitch.

Second part of my research relates to comparison of Levelized Cost of Energy between different floating offshore wind concepts.”

Achieve optimal results

In the next couple of months, Nermina will complete her internship at Van Oord. “Under my graduation project, I was looking to link the theoretical research with the practical knowledge in the offshore wind industry in order to achieve optimal results. I am very much grateful and happy that Van Oord Offshore Wind BV as one of the leading offshore wind contractors agreed to support my research.” How will the next couple of months look like for you? “Very busy!” says Nermina laughing. “I have to finish my research before the end of the year and then hope to find a job in the offshore wind industry.”
