EWEA Meeting EWEA The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) is the largest and one of the most powerful wind energy networks in the world. It is the voice of the wind industry in Europe and is ideally situated in the heart of the EU quarter in Brussels in close proximity to European decision makers.
EWEA has over 700 members from almost 60 countries, including manufacturers with a leading share of the world wind power market, plus component suppliers, research institutes, national wind and renewables associations, developers, electricity providers, finance and insurance companies and consultants. This combined strength makes EWEA the world’s largest and most powerful wind energy network. The association’s main activities centre on coordinating international policy and formulating policy positions for the wind industry on key issues, communications, research and analysis both independent and in cooperation with industry and research institutions, and providing support to members. EWEA also organises high profile industry events including the EWEA annual event, the bi-annual offshore conference and workshops in the EU and beyond.

EWEA’s communication activities include producing a large variety of information tools, managing high profile campaigns in support of wind energy, producing a bi-monthly magazine and a blog updated several times a week, and frequent press-related activities all aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of wind energy, dispelling the myths and providing easy access to comprehensive information. Our aim is to communicate that wind energy is a popular, mainstream power technology and a key solution to the emerging energy, climate and jobs crises. Our overall mission is to ensure that wind energy will be the leading technology in transforming the global energy supply structure towards a truly sustainable energy future based on indigenous, non-polluting and competitive renewable technologies. To do this we use effective communication and engagement in the political decision-making processes to facilitate the national and international policies needed to strengthen
the development of European and global wind energy markets, infrastructure development and improvement of technology. Wind energy has been growing very strongly in the last ten to fifteen years to the point where it is a mainstream power generating technology. By the end of 2010 there were 84GW of wind energy capacity installed in Europe, providing 5.3% of its electricity, avoiding CO2 equivalent to 35% of the EU’s Kyoto Protocol obligation and representing €12.7 billion of annual investments. While the initial pioneers of wind energy were Denmark, Spain and Germany, more recently a new wave of strong onshore wind energy markets has been emerging, including countries like Romania, Poland and Belgium. The other major area of growth is of course offshore wind energy, with the most significant additions made last year in the UK – now the global offshore market leader – Denmark and Belgium. The enormous potential of the offshore wind energy is being celebrated, analysed and explored further at EWEA’s OFFSHORE 2011 conference and exhibition. It is the world’s largest offshore wind energy event and will take place from 29 November to 2 December in RAI, Amsterdam. For more information: www.ewea.org/offshore2011 Cumulatively, by the end of 2010 there were 45 wind farms in the waters of nine European countries, totalling 2,946MW. In just the first six months of 2011, four new offshore farms - 101 new turbines – came online, reaching a total of 1,247 turbines with a capacity of 3,294MW in 49 wind farms. By 2025, EWEA expects offshore capacity to exceed the capacity of wind operating onshore at the end of 2010, and is expected to exceed onshore capacity altogether beyond 2030.

EWEA estimates that by 2020 there will 40GW of offshore wind energy capacity, providing 4% of Europe’s electricity, and that by 2030, there will 150GW offshore, providing 14% of EU electricity demand. Annual investments in offshore wind power are expected to increase from €2.8 billion in 2011 to €10.4 billion in 2020 and to €17.1 billion in 2030.
Industry, meanwhile, must work with the private sector to overcome supply chain bottlenecks and with the relevant institutions to deal with skills shortages while the financial sector needs to become more familiar with opportunities and challenges of offshore wind. However, to enable industry to develop the market, governments and EU must ensure a progressive and stable policy framework including a binding 2030 renewable energy target, implementation of a single market in electricity, and actions to ensure the constructions of an offshore grid.
In addition, EWEA has long called for governments to facilitate R&D investment to enable the technology to follow the same cost reductions as onshore wind.
AWEA Meeting AWEA The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) is the national trade association representing a broad range of entities with a common interest in encouraging the deployment and expansion of wind energy resources in the United States. AWEA has over 2,500 members and advocates which include wind turbine manufacturers, component suppliers, project developers, project owners and operators, financiers, researchers, renewable energy supporters, utilities, marketers, customers, and their advocates.
AWEA is pleased to support the growing momentum within the U.S. offshore wind industry. Offshore wind’s significant job creation potential, proven environmental benefits and close proximity to demand have attracted developers to pursue projects along the East Coast, and in the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. Continued and expanding commitment from states, the federal government and environmental organizations bolsters the prospects for the offshore wind industry in America. There were a number of significant offshore wind development milestones in the U.S. in 2011: • Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Energy Steven Chu unveiled a coordinated strategic plan to pursue the deployment of 10 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2020 and 54 GW by 2030. • In order to expedite permitting, Secretary Salazar announced the creation of high priority mid-Atlantic Wind Energy Areas off the coasts of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia and issued an initial environment review for these areas.

• Secretary Salazar and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) Director Michael Bromwich announced the initiation of the process to offer the first commercial offshore wind lease under the “Smart from the Start” Initiative off the coast of Delaware . • Secretary Salazar announced that BOEMRE approved a Construction and Operations Plan (COP) for Cape Wind.
• Secretary Chu announced the Department of Energy’s commitment of $43 million over the next five years to help speed technical innovations, drive down costs, and shorten the timeline for deploying offshore wind energy in the U.S. 41 projects across 20 states were awarded funding. The U.S. offshore and land-based wind power industries must have stable state and federal policies. The land-based segment of the U.S. wind industry has proven that stable policy can rapidly grow an industry – with domestic manufacturing capabilities increasing 12-fold since 2004. With over 1,400 attendees and 100 exhibitors, AWEA’s 2011 Offshore WINDPOWER Conference & Exhibition is proof of the growing interest in the U.S. offshore sector. The 2012 Offshore WINDPOWER Conference and Exhibition, on October 9-11 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is poised to build on the successes of this year’s event, just as companies expect to reach new benchmarks along the way to making the U.S. offshore wind industry a reality. BWE Offshore wind is gaining momentum
The German Wind Energy Association (BWE) represents the interests of the German wind energy sector. Its members are turbine manufacturers, suppliers, planners, and service companies, but also a large number of private individuals. Through its broad-based membership the association actively engages in the fields of on - and offshore wind energy.
In Germany, offshore wind farming is still in the early stages of development. Long distances from the coast, deep waters and varying substrates ensure that much new experience is gained. Internationally too, this is entering unchartered waters, and the road ahead is not always free of risk. It is all the more important that Federal government has recently created a credit scheme worth â‚Ź5 billion to help overcome financing difficulties. What is the current status of offshore wind energy in Germany? According to the German Wind Energy Institute (DEWI), an installed capacity of about 200MW had been connected to the grid by mid-2011. This is down to three wind farms: the alpha ventus test field, parts of Bard 1 (both in the North Sea), and Baltic 1 in the Baltic Sea.

Even though no further offshore wind farms are likely to be connected this year, the BWE believes that offshore developments are now gaining momentum and more wind farms will follow suit in the years to come. 25 additional offshore wind farms have already secured planning permission in the German North and Baltic Sea, with an additional 60 currently in the approval process. Despite this large number, due to the difficulties described and the slow start of offshore wind farming in Germany, we do not believe that the
government’s target of 10 gigawatts of installed power can be achieved. We consider a maximum of 7 gigawatts to be realistic by 2020. A key factor is that onshore wind energy will continue to play a central role in Germany: We assume that a minimum of 45 gigawatts of installed onshore power will be available by 2020. And this makes good sense, since onshore wind energy is much cheaper for consumers and the experience already gained in this area is vital for the rapid phase-out of nuclear power. Both the on- and offshore sector have enormous impact on Germany as an industrial location, not least as a job motor. About 100,000 people already work in this young sector. Recent studies have concluded that by 2020, up to 160,000 people will be employed in the onshore wind industry alone. This is complemented by value added in the regions, benefiting in particular those regions that are structurally weak. The maritime sector also profits from the development of offshore wind: entirely new perspectives can open up for shipyards for example, many of which have recently experienced difficulties. DWIA Anniversary: 20 years offshore adventure
In 1991 the first offshore wind farm ever seen was established offthe coast of a small Danish island, Lolland. The farm was named Vindeby and became the first milestone in the story about a project that blossomed into a modern business adventure. What started as a philanthropic experiment have now become a global industry and an alternative to fossil fuels. 2011 marks 20 years in an ongoing story about passionate entrepreneurs, innovation and cooperation.
Several offshore wind farms have been established since, securing clean and reliable power to the Danish population. This year we celebrate the 20 years offshore adventure by marking another historic milestone in the story of the offshore industry: Denmark is the first country in the world to reach 25 percent wind in the power system. This wouldn’t have been possible without having some of the world’s largest offshore wind farms like Horns Rev II that alone covers the annual electricity consumption of 200,000 Danish households. And more offshore wind farms will be established. The Danish government just recently released its targets on renewable energy and CO2 emissions. Wind power is targeted to deliver 50 percent of the total power consumption in Denmark in 2020. Offshore wind will play a major role in the government’s urge to reach that goal.

These targets contain great possibilities but we must also be aware of the challenges. Throughout the recent decades we’ve successfully lowered the cost of energy (CoE) onshore and thereby ensured a price competitive alternative to fossil fuels. But compared to onshore technology, offshore is still in its early stages. CoE reductions will be the overall challenge for the offshore industry in the next decade, and to meet this challenge, innovative solutions must be developed. In Denmark, the Danish wind industry and the research community have addressed the
main RD&D challenges in an offshore strategy from a joint strategic partnership called ‘Megavind’. With the offshore strategy, Megavind has a 50% CoE reduction target by 2020 and three main achievements must be realized by industry and research between now and 2020 to reach this target. Firstly, newly built offshore wind farms must be able to produce roughly 25% more electricity per installed MW. Secondly, the capital expenditure including costs per installed MW must be reduced by approximately 40%. And thirdly, the cost of operation and maintenance per installed MW must be reduced to about half. The strategy report describes 7 thematic priorities and lists specific RD&D priorities for each. These are selected by Megavind on the basis of their potential to contribute to the CoE reduction. On 16-19th of April 2012 EWEA’s Annual Event will be held in Copenhagen. This event includes the industry’s brightest minds who will meet to exchange the latest knowledge on offshore technology in order to find more effective solutions. Furthermore EWEA 2012 is a great opportunity for future business relationships. I personally encourage you all to participate. Founded in 1996, the France Energie Eolienne (FEE) association is currently a group of almost 250 members participating in developing the wind power industry in France. Since 2005 FEE has also represented the wind power part of the Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER).
FEE works for the controlled, balanced progress of wind power in France by intervening with all participants in the industry. Its mission is to defend the rights and interests of its members. To this end, FEE represents the members at authorities and regulating bodies at local, national, European and regional levels. France Energie Eolienne also promotes the benefits of wind energy to the public and the media.

France Energie Eolienne is split into commissions, sub-divided into specific working groups focusing on the following topics: Laws and Regulations, Connection, Technical Projects, Offshore, Economics, Communication, Industry, and Operation. It communicates any useful information to its members (e.g. draft regulation documents), takes part in preparing new laws, decrees and other texts, meets government members and their cabinets, members of parliament, civil servants and journalists, and acts in favor of the development of the wind power industry in France. FEE also works to create and strengthen links between the various French and foreign partners in the wind power industry. Offshore France is ranked 2nd in Europe regarding the offshore wind potential, just behind the United Kingdom. In 2009, the objective was enacted of 6GW of offshore wind power by 2020. There is so far no offshore wind farm operating in French waters. However, the French Government launched in July
2011 the first tender for a total capacity of 3GW, which is planned to be followed by a second 3GW tender early 2012. This first call concerns five zones facing the North Sea Coast and the Atlantic Coast. This tender represents a huge opportunity for France. It also has one of the strongest industries considering its industrial know-how and historical experience especially in electrical, aerospace and automotive components, steel, maritime and oil & gas works, and shipyards located on the Atlantic coast, which are now positioned to manufacture steel foundations. France also has important assets regarding its port capacities and dimensions (Dunkerque, Cherbourg, Rouen/le Havre, Brest, Nantes Saint-Nazaire and Bordeaux), which are well adapted for the assembly and the storage of wind turbines and for further activities in operation and maintenance. France, given its position can also be an important stakeholder for the equipment of offshore wind farms in the UK, which has announced high objectives. For instance Vestas chose the Dunkerque port for the assembly and storage of components of wind turbines for the Thanet offshore wind farm, located in the English waters and in operation since 2010. FWPA Positive signal from Finnish government to offshore wind power
The wind power development in Finland has been relatively slow and the installed capacity was still a modest 197 MW by the end of 2010. This modest amount of installed capacity is due to lack of an effective support system mechanism that has hindered the development until now, but the new feed-in-tariff system, implemented in March 2011, will boost the development in Finland. Already by May 2011 the pipeline had reached 6 300 MW.
Approximately half of the capacity under development today is onshore-projects, the other half offshore projects. The current feed-in-tariff, 83,5 €/ MWh, is not enough for offshore projects. The new government, elected in spring 2011, has started the work to design an investment subsidy for a large demonstration offshore project. This is very good news for the Finnish wind farm developers. With the demonstration project the overall supply chain necessary for a large offshore wind farm can be tested. The demonstration offshore wind farm can also be used to define the correct feed-in-tariff level for offshore projects in Finland.

The conditions where Finnish developers develop their wind farms differ from those of other countries. The Finnish waters are rather shallow, typically the wind farms in Finland are planned in areas where the water depth is between 5 and 20 meters. Also the distance between the shore and the wind farm location is relatively short: only between few hundred meters to 20 kilometres. The main difference between the Finnish offshore projects and other European offshore projects is the weather condition. In Finland the sea can be frozen for several months a year. This sets high requirements for the foundation and the tower of a turbine. They should be able to resist the force of packed ice that the wind sometimes pushes towards the offshore constructions (e.g. lighthouses, beacons). The ice can also sometimes limit the access to the turbine and make the maintenance more difficult than for onshore turbines. All these issues can be managed with thorough planning of the project.
There are currently 11 semi-offshore wind turbines (on artificial islands), one offshore wind turbine and one offshore test foundation and a tower in Finland. The test foundation was installed in summer 2009 few hundred meters outside of Kemi and the offshore turbine in the summer of 2010, a few hundred meters offshore from Pori. The results from both of these sites have been promising: there has been no damage to the test foundation caused by ice during the last two winters. Also the offshore turbine did not suffer from any damage last winter. These results together with the demonstration subsidy for a larger offshore wind farm promised by the Finnish Government provide very encouraging news for the Finnish wind farm developers. The Finnish Wind Power Association (FWPA) is a non-governmental organisation that promotes Wind Energy and increases the wind energy knowledge in Finland. FWPA is also active in the public and political discussion concerning the wind energy. The member companies of the association are from various fields of business. The membership list includes, for example, project developers, turbine manufacturers, consultants and component or material producers. All of these companies share the same point of view concerning the wind power: it is a good and beneficial energy production method that should be promoted in Finland. NWEA Dutch success in offshore wind The Netherlands Wind Energy Association (NWEA) is the voice of the wind industry, actively promoting the utilisation of wind power in the Netherlands, on land and offshore. The main aim of the organisation is to lobby the national government on behalf of our members and the industry.
Among the members of NWEA are developers and owners of wind farms, manufacturers, constructors, research institutes, electricity providers, consultants and maintenance companies. NWEA is the initiator of Wind Force 11, the project that will be displayed at EWEA OFFSHORE 2011 to show that the Dutch offshore wind sector has a lot to offer.

Status and outlook for the Netherlands The Netherlands completed one of the first offshore wind farms in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Although we were making strong progress, our neighbours have caught up with us in the meantime. Currently there are two wind farms in operation off the Dutch East coast, Egmond aan Zee and Prinses Amaliawindpark, producing a total of 228MW. There are also three projects in various stages of planning in the North East of the Dutch sector, with a total capacity of 700MW. The project developers expect to build two of these projects within two to three years. In 2020 we expect to have 5200MW off offshore wind according to our National Action Program. By the start of October 2011 the Dutch government and the Netherlands Wind Energy Association had jointly signed a Green Deal on offshore wind energy. For further development of wind energy in the North Sea a substantial reduction of the cost is required, reaching a 40% reduction by 2020. Innovation and policy adjustments form an essential part. The Green Deal incorporates
topics from pilot projects to testing new ideas. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture & Innovation (EL&I) and the Ministry of Infrastructure & Environment (I&M)have established a round table council with the NWEA as the industry’s representative to make the Green Deal a reality. The NWEA stresses that offshore wind energy offers great opportunities not only for the Dutch economy but it is also absolutely essential to meet the European renewable energy targets. Therefore the NWEA will form a business coalition of companies and organisations. This coalition will contribute to lower the costs of offshore wind energy by innovation. The current status of this coalition will be presented during the EWEA OFFSHORE 2011 conference in Amsterdam. With this Green Deal, the government clearly indicates that offshore wind energy is an important of the sustainable policy and it recognises the importance of a strong domestic market to improve the export opportunities for Dutch industry. The current position of the offshore industry will be strengthened and expanded by this Green Deal and by the construction of Dutch offshore wind farms. Following the example of Britain and Germany, this will provide many green jobs in an industry that is typically Dutch by origin. It is no coincidence that, to date, the Dutch offshore wind industry sector has played a part in every existing offshore wind farm project in Europe, and the NWEA is working to maintain this situation.

With 487 turbines installed on 14 offshore wind farms, the United Kingdom is currently the world leader in offshore wind. According to the latest research by RenewableUK, published in October 2011 in the organisation’s annual State of the Industry report, the country is set to retain its leadership position, with a total of 8 gigawatts (GW) of capacity installed by 2016, and a further 10 GW by 2020. The industry is confident of achieving the Government’s scenario of 18 GW of offshore wind within the next ten years.
In fact, the country already gets close to 2% of its net electricity consumption from offshore wind, and this share is set to grow to between 17% and 20% in 10 years time. This is a colossal achievement, considering that the first experimental near shore installation in the UK was built in 2001. Other statistics about the country’s offshore sector are equally impressive. In 2008 RenewableUK published its first headcount of number of employees in the offshore wind industry, which at the time stood at around 800. This year a similar study conducted by Cambridge Econometrics put the number of employees at around 3100. The conclusion is that the sector not only managed to increase the amount of green electricity it supplied to the grid, but also to create much needed jobs and business benefits to the UK economy. The second part of the study quantifies the potential of the offshore sector to create 47,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2020.

Offshore wind in the UK is a thriving industry, led by dedicated individuals from across a number of traditional and emerging industrial sectors. For instance, to deliver a 180 megawatt (MW), 60 turbine wind farm, it takes around 170 vessels, 24,000 tonnes of steel, and years of planning and preparation. Beyond the immediate pipeline of projects there are 45 GW of capacity currently at various stages of
development, ready to provide close to 140 TWh of electricity per year (out of a total consumption of 370 TWh). This illustrates the sense of opportunity in the UK’s offshore wind sector. On 13-14 June next year the world’s offshore wind sector will converge in London for the Global Offshore 2012 conference and exhibition. Held at the EXCEL Arena in the heart of London’s Canary Wharf financial district, it will draw the major offshore players from around the world and offer national pavilions so that each wind energy association can present developments in its own offshore sector. A closer look at our most recent projects Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm Location: Irish Sea Client: Vattenfall Wind Power UK Period: March 2011 – August 2011 A2SEA’s specialist jack-up barge SEA JACK and her experienced crew transported 30 5MW REpower turbines from Belfast harbour to the Ormonde Offshore Wind farm where they lifted the components into place ready for in situ assembly by an external crew. Towing SEA JACK with her load of giant turbine components through the narrow shipping canal to open sea took a great deal of meticulous planning and preparation. London Array Offshore Wind Farm Location: Outer Thames Estuary Client: London Array Limited Period: February 2011 – November 2012 SEA WORKER, A2SEA’s specialist jack-up barge is operating in waters so shallow that parts of the site lie 20 centimetres above sea level at low tide. Her crew are installing 54 of the project’s 175 turbines and 56 of the 177 foundations in the first phase of the London Array which, on completion, will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world. Hot off the press A2SEA signs cooperation agreement with the Teekay Corporation to provide marine services for the construction of offshore wind farms. A2SEA signed an MOU Agreement with Teekay Corporation to design, deliver and operate a new generation of transportation and installation vessels. Able to work on more challenging offshore sites in deeper waters, the new vessels will handle the installation of new types of foundations, such as tripods and jackets that are likely to be commonplace in Offshore Wind construction. The vessels will be owned and operated by Teekay while A2SEA provides project management and operational expertise.
At Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm, A2SEA is providing with project planning and solutions for logistics and installation. This includes operating GMS ENDEAVOUR, a third-party vessel chartered by the wind farm’s owner, Scira Offshore Energy. In September 2011 SEA JACK joined GMS ENDEAVOUR at Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm where she will be installing turbines until January 2012 when she will leave for foundation installation at Teesside.

The remaining three degrees of freedom, one translation (heave) and two rotations (roll and pitch), are compensated by the Barge Master, a platform driven by 3 hydraulic actuators. By measuring the heave, roll and pitch and controlling the actuators supporting the platform to produce the counteractive motion, the platform is kept in an earth fixed steady position. Scale model tests at the Dutch Maritime research center (MARIN) have shown compensation percentages upward of 95%. Applications Barge Master is a product with a broad range of applications. Technology Roll, pitch and heave have a significant impact on the workability of supply vessels during offshore transport and installation activities. These movements often restrict the operational window of supply vessels, as the relative movement between the vessel and a fixed object (jack up barge, platform) exceeds present limits. The implications hereof for both project planning and costs are obvious. In a three dimensional world, six degrees of freedom (DoF) need to be compensated to keep the platform from moving. Three DoF’s are compensated by restraining two translations (Surge and Sway) and one rotation (Yaw) of the vessel or barge by using a dynamic

BOW Terminal Breakbulk and Offshore Wind terminal in Vlissingen Within the port of Vlissingen the new BOW Terminal has been operational since 2010. This terminal, covering an area of 20 Ha, and with a quay length of 340 metres (the BOW quay), is ideally located on the North Sea coast at the mouth of the Westerschelde, with direct access to open sea, without any locks or bridges. Additional to the mentioned BOW quay, an extra quay length of 1.400 metres is available, equiped with five mobile harbour cranes for regular cargo, blades and containers. The availability of permanent heavy lift capacity makes this terminal a perfect location for breakbulk and offshore (wind) projects.

Currently, BOW Terminal is being used during the construction of three major UK-based offshore wind farms.

One of these offshore wind projects is contracted by Statoil, operator for the development phase of Scira (Sheringham Shoal Offshore Windfarm). In relation to this project the MS Oleg Strashnov, owned by Seaway Heavylift, has made regular visits to the BOW terminal project quay. For the Lincs offshore wind farm project, BOW terminal provided the handling and storage of 75 foundation piles. Unloading river barges and loading North Sea barges on weekly
basis including sea fastening and grout & waste logistics. During the summer of 2011 the BOW terminal has also been involved with the handling of transition pieces and monopiles for the London Array project, in close co-operation with the installation company and EPC contractor. During this project, jack up vessel MPI Adventure berthed at the BOW terminal three times to load more foundations. The BOW terminal has also been used for the loading of transition pieces on North Sea barges and for towing floating out to their destination for this same project. Additional works on site during these major projects can also be offered inhouse, as well as Port Agency for

CG Building renewable energy for Europe In a recent major offshore engineering project, CG again confirmed its reputation as a leading innovative electrical engineering corporation. The challenge was to deliver a complete 1,100 ton high-voltage substation for the Belwind wind farm, 46 km from Zeebrugge in the North Sea. Belwind is the largest green energy project in Belgium with a total capacity of 330 MW. In spite of several unique challenges, CG with its consortium partners, Fabricom and Iemants, completed the project in one year.

CG was responsible for the engineering and delivery of the high voltage installation, including the transformers and the connection to the ELIA network. The construction of the station was completed inland in Fabricom’s module yard from where it was rolled out and hoisted by crane onto a special vessel to be transported to its destination. The provision of an ‘onshore’ transformer to an offshore wind power facility was a major achievement made possible by CG’s booster technology. The station has been installed on a monopile in the seabed from where offshore electricity is fed to the Belgian HV grid via an onshore
booster transformer. This procedure significantly lowers the risk of failure while optimising maintenance and providing maximum plant availability. Recently the focus shifted to the German North Sea where the same consortium was awarded the design, delivery and installation of the high voltage substation platform for the 288 MW Butendiek offshore wind farm. Here the WPD group, a worldwide developer and operator of wind farms, will install 80 turbines of the 3.6 MW class. CG will design, engineer and supply the high voltage substation, complete with power transformers, high and
medium voltage switchgear and the auxiliary reactors and transformers. The substation will connect the 33 kV wind turbines to the 155 kV national grid. Innovative AC/AC connecting technology, will also be applied here to ensure lower costs at high efficiency levels. ‘There is no single way to build and operate an offshore wind farm’ The Damen Shipyards Group is looking closely to all aspects of the offshore processes of a wind farm, from development and installation to operation and the kind of solutions the company could bring to the market. We have already learned that there is no single way to build and operate an offshore wind farm. Indeed the challenges of scale, water depth and distance from shore are such that the optimal solutions are still being developed. Vessel types Our first steps into the offshore wind market are marked by the FCS 2610. But clearly this is not the only vessel type
you would see in the various phases of offshore wind farm development. Typical other vessels are: survey vessels, foundation installation vessels, cable laying vessels, diving support vessels, turbine installation vessels, anchor handlers, workboats, accommodation barges, etc. Remarkably, quite a few of these types have already been built by Damen Shipyards or are presently under construction. Market trends We recognize several interesting market developments and trends. Utility companies are starting to become ship owners and sometimes operators as well. This is mainly driven by the desire to prevent any logistics bottlenecks by
being able to use their own installation vessels. There is also a tendency of using a free floating vessel (DP2) for foundation installation instead of a jack-up vessel. Jumbo Offshore has been the pioneer in doing so with its Damen-built DP2 Heavy Lift Vessels. Especially the last trend is focussed on driving down cost and improving efficiency. Various governments have put targets to the industry of reducing cost by 40% before the end of this decade. Those challenges are even more difficult when combined with the tendency that wind farms are being planned and built further and further offshore. This will certainly not drive down the cost.
Despite all this, the offshore wind market will be booming. In Europe before the end of 2020 there will be 40GW operational. We still have 36GW of that total amount to go. The USA is planning to realize 54GW by 2030, China is planning for 30GW in 2020 and Korea 23GW by 2030. All in all, there are many opportunities and Damen, already present with a number of proven vessels designs, is evolving towards a complete Damen Offshore Wind product range. Hovercrafts are able to transit water, sand, ice mud and other obstacles to conventional ships or work-boats and the infrastructure required is minimal with no requirement for jetty or harbour.
With speeds up to 45 knots, accommodation for 12 or more engineers in transit, a well deck and crane for stores and even a vehicle if necessary, the advantages of the larger craft are clear to see. Bow thrusters and a stable platform capable of some “dampening of the wave effect” through hover height when docking, all add to the effectiveness of this type of operation in turn-around time and greater accessibility.
In extreme cold weather, the hovercraft is often the only method of accessing the operation across solid or broken ice, making them invaluable for routine engineering or crew rotation, stores or spares supply, and of course search & rescue. Similarly, hovercraft support allows wind farm operation in the “transition zone” of inshore tidal areas because mud and sand banks are accessible 24/7
and hover barges are also now used in construction. The Swedish Coast Guard has recently taken delivery of another hovercraft and the Canadian Coastguard has recently ordered another addition to its fleet. Offshore applications Last year, Holmatro hydraulic cylinders were used for the installation of the Walney offshore wind farm off the west coast of the United Kingdom. Wind Turbine Shuttle The Wind Turbine Shuttle, a dynamically positioned, fast sailing (14 knots) SWATH-type installation vessel which can carry and install two wind turbines in one piece, is another example of a dedicated offshore wind turbine installation product design. By combining low vessel motions, compensating systems and a mooring system, the wind turbine is kept virtually stationary in relation to the fixed foundation. The SWATH-type floating vessel provides excellent vessel motions and therefore a large workability. The vessel is able to install wind turbines with a maximum significant wave height of 3.5m. This gives the unit a workability
of approximately 80% of the year, in North Sea conditions. Plate bending Kersten Europe rolls plates of ferrous and non-ferrous metals into dishes, cylinders and cones. Kersten Europe bends plates up to 150mm wall thickness. complex 3D cuts or tube-to-tube connections are made possible even with changing welding preparations. LD TravOcean Submarine Cable Trenching LD TravOcean was incorporated in Marseilles in 1977 to meet the local and international demand for marine engineering works. In 1978, the French National power utility EDF contracted LD TravOcean for the installation of 2 pairs of subsea power cables, each 45 km long, between France and England («IFA 2000» link). This project was for LD TravOcean the first of a long series within the power cable industry.

Over the years, LD TravOcean accrued considerable know-how in the laying and protection of submarine cables, with acknowledged expertise both in the design of burial systems (trenchers, ROVs, jetting vehicles, fixed and vibrating ploughshares) and in their worldwide operation out at sea. Diversification into wind farm cables has therefore been a logical next step. LD TravOcean had its first experience of burying inter-turbine cables last year with the 51 cables of the Walney 1 Project in the Irish sea. This experience has since then been renewed and
comforted with the completion of the neighbouring Ormonde project (32 infield cables) and the ongoing burial works on the Walney 2 project (51 infield cables). All in all, more than 80km of cables were successfully buried at 2 meters below seabed. LD TravOcean will reiterate this performance next year with 140km of trenching works and the burial of 111 infield cables on the Anholt project in Denmark.

LOC has undertaken a number of risk analysis studies on potential offshore wind farm sites and advised contractors on methods of reducing their exposure as well as assisting in the development of the latest DTI and BWEA best practice guidelines. We provide advice and approvals to ensure that planning and procedures are well developed and implemented to
minimise the risks during all aspects of offshore works, maintaining an active and constructive dialogue with the key developers, contractors and engineers. With the growth in renewable energy, there is an increasing focus on offshore wind. MARIN too, is actively participating in the development of the offshore wind energy sector. It launched RENT (Renewable Energy Team), a MARIN-wide team of specialists covering all the aspects needed to make offshore renewable energy a success.
At the end of 2010 MARIN performed a series of pilot model tests, with a special model of an offshore wind turbine with realistic flexibility tested in extreme seas. The tests confirmed that breaking waves can induce significant oscillations and accelerations in the turbine, resulting in extreme fatigue loads on the foundation, tower, turbine blades, shaft, gearbox and generator. To further study this subject MARIN, together with ECN and other partners, will start up a Joint Industry Project ‘Wave impacts on Fixed Turbines’ (WiFi) to optimize the development of offshore wind turbines. 67
The RENT team is involved in the hydrodynamic design of fixed and floating offshore wind turbines for which the challenges are very similar to those of the offshore industry: safe and economic design, production, transportation, installation, maintenance, repair and removal. To improve its services for the design and development of
these offshore wind turbines, MARIN developed the following new ‘tools’: • High-quality wind setup for model tests with floating wind turbines in the Offshore basin, as the generation of a high quality wind field is of great importance for the correct coupling between the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic behaviour of floating wind turbines. • Time domain numerical calculation model. MARIN and the Dutch Research Centre on Energy (ECN) have coupled aNySIM with an aerodynamic tool of ECN called PHATAS. This new time domain numerical calculation model integrates all loads acting on the entire wind turbine, including rotor loads.

This commitment allowed the company to break industry records in 2010. On 24 June, more than a month ahead of schedule, MPI Resolution completed the installation of 100 turbines in 100
days at the Thanet Offshore Wind Farm. Delivered in 2003, the MPI Resolution is the world’s first purpose built vessel for installing offshore wind turbines, foundations and transition pieces. The vessel is a unique combination of tested technologies applied in innovative ways to provide a single vessel transport and installation solution for the offshore wind sector. MPI Resolution, currently in action on the Lincs project, has been specifically designed to overcome the challenges presented by the offshore environment including limited operational weather windows and dependance on high numbers of infield logistical support vessels. Capable of operating in water depths ranging from six metres to more than thirty five metres, conversion of the MPI Resolution from a vessel to a stable working platform is achieved quickly and efficiently by the application of two class leading technologies. It is manoeuvred into position by its Kongsberg Simrad SDP-11 dynamic positioning system, then 48 large sized hydraulic cylinders allow the 130-metre vessel to be jacked clear of the water at a rate of 0.5 metre per minute. Both the 600 tonne main crane and the 50 tonne auxiliary crane have been selected because of their ability to operate in wind speeds up to 20 metres per second, well above the design parameters laid out in offshore turbine erection procedures.
The main crane also provides the capacity (reach and radius) that is necessary to place a complete wind turbine generator to a hub height over 100 metres above sea level. With a large cargo capacity capable of carrying multiple WTG components and high performance main and ancillary cranes providing the lifting capacity, the MPI Resolution outperforms any other vessel currently installing offshore wind turbine components. Launched in 2010 and now operational on The London Array project, the MPI Adventure is the ‘next generation’ of wind turbine transport and installation vessel. In terms of jacking speed, deck space, lifting capacity and positioning capabilities, the MPI Adventure is the world’s most advanced and most efficient Wind Turbine Installation Vessel (WTIV). The vessel’s enhanced characteristics have been achieved without losing the original concept of a unique combination of tested technologies, pioneered by MPI on its first WTIV, the MPI Resolution. The experience gained from operating MPI Resolution in the offshore wind turbine installation market since 2003 has proved vital in implementing these enhancements. Key features on the MPI Adventure include a 1,000-tonne-capacity main crane, a 50- tonne-capacity auxiliary crane, accommodation capacity for 112 persons, a maximum operating depth of 40 metres (at 5.0m leg penetration and 7.8m air gap) and an ability to jack with 6,000 tonnes of cargo onboard.

This last turbine, C16, was erected at 00.15 and was Seajacks’ 175th turbine installed to date. When Walney is brought on line in late 2011, it will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm comprising 102 Siemens 3.6 MW 120 WTG’s. Seajacks Kraken was initially contracted by DONG Energy to install 46 of the 51 turbines on Walney 1, whereas both Seajacks Kraken and
Seajacks Leviathan were contracted by DONG Energy to install turbines at Walney 2 so that the installation activities could be completed within one summer season. This third vessel is a modified version of the GustoMSC NG5500 design, which incorporates a fully redundant DP2 propulsion system, accommodations for 90 persons, and an 800T leg encircling crane designed by GustoMSC. Next to the SIWT SPT Offshore has developed several Self Installing Platform (SIP) concepts, which can also be used for the large offshore transformer AC and AC/DC substations. The Self Installing Platform (SIP) concept is well suited for the larger platforms up to 15,000 ton in weight and up to 40m water depth. In September 2010, SPT successfully installed the SIP gas platform for Centrica in the centre of the North Sea in 40m water depth. The SIP platform measured a weight of some 10,000 ton and was the world’s first platform installed in record time of 2 days and 4 hours.

A new developed smaller cable reel carrier from NICOLAS with 50 ton payload has been brought to the market now. In comparison to transportation of cable reels with forklifts, the new NICOLAS reel carrier avoids high ground pressure.

Winergy AG A pioneer in the offshore wind business Winergy, one of the pioneers in the offshore business, introduced its first industrialized gearbox for wind turbines in 1981. Ten years later, in 1991, the first offshore wind park in Vindeby, Denmark, was equipped with eleven 450 kW Winergy gearboxes - an important step for the wind industry and the crucial move for Winergy to build up experience in the offshore business. Focussing on offshore applications since then, Winergy introduced a gearbox especially for offshore applications in 2003, which had more than a 10-times higher power rating: The first 5 MW gearbox prototype - a milestone for gearbox technology.

Multi Duored – New drive train concepts for the offshore industry Next to the highly reliable and well proven gearbox design with two planetary stages and one helical stage, Winergy also developed new offshore drive train concepts like the Multi Duored gearbox. This 6.5 MW gearbox is especially designed for offshore applications and has an 8-fold power split, which is realized through helical gears. Another specialty of this product are the two generator output shafts. The utilization of two generators allows a very compact design for the complete drive train, which reduces the overall length by up to 35%. The reduction of size results in a lower overall nacelle weight.
