ClassNK approves RIMS RIMS (Robotics In Maintenance Strategies) continues in their quest in the practical integration of drone technology in the world maritime surveying with yet another class society approval for the use of Remote Inspection Techniques (drones) during surveys of enclosed spaces, this time from ClassNK. Over the past 12 months RIMS have successfully secured class approvals from multiple societies; Bureau Veritas, Lloyd’s Register, ABS, RINA, KRS and now ClassNK. The certification for the use of Remote Inspection Techniques (drones) during surveys of enclosed spaces, from these classification societies opens the option of drone use to more shipowners and managers for inspections. The use of drones during surveys enables remote live on-screen object inspection, which can result in the elimination of the use of costly access equipment such as scaffolding and cherry pickers. The technology used in this way in turn then offers additional substantial benefits to shipowners and managers such as; reduction in the time to carry out a survey, minimising of risk, as well as cost savings.
Royal IHC to build four new vessels for DEME
David Knukkel, CEO, RIMS said; “We want to ensure we can offer our services as an option to all, and we shall continue to put our efforts into obtaining further class approval to ensure this is the case. “Our journey and the future of the technology is looking promising and we are really seeing a positive shift which these class approvals only enhance further. The benefits of the drone technology are vast, and we will continue in our mission to demonstrate what these benefits are to the maritime industry.”

dredger (TSHD) Scheldt River, a 2,300 cubic metres TSHD, and two 3,500 cubic metres split barges. The compact design of the 2,300 cubic metres TSHD is characterised by a small draught and can be deployed for projects in shallow water worldwide. The two split barges are based on the IHC standard split trail 3,500 design. The ease and speed of disposal makes them highly attractive for use in combination with backhoe dredgers, grab hopper dredgers and CSDs such as the Spartacus, which is currently being built by IHC in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands. Dave Vander Heyde, CEO of Royal IHC: “IHC is proud that DEME has ordered four highly competitive new vessels. With this order, the designed and built by IHC, adds up to 21. The partnership with DEME has proven to be successful in the past, and we are pleased to continue our partnership with them by adding more value and technical capabilities to their advanced fleet.”

The Dutch contribution to the aquaculture industry MARITIME HOLL AND | NO. 6 | 2018
The aquaculture industry as we know it today really kicked off in the 1970s. It was in this decade that fish farming activities began drawing on scientific knowledge instead of solely on operational experience. Furthermore, it was in 1975 that aquaculture was first recognised by the United Nations as a clearly defined economic business sector. Since the 70s, the aquaculture sector has shown massive growth. Looking closer at the salmon industry, for instance, salmon farming alone is currently estimated to be worth $15.4 billion; accounting for 2.5 million tonnes of fish. The most important countries of production are Chile, Norway, Scotland and Canada.

Making the sea a safer place Bodac and N-Sea clean up unexploded ordnance for Nord Stream 2 project The sea has been a place for economic activities for a long time. Trading would not be the same without ships and in recent times the sea is the work area of the offshore energy sector. But, from time to time, it was also the place where wars were fought. Ammunition from those battles still litter the ocean floor. The Dutch company Bodac is a specialist when it comes to detecting and clearing dangerous ammunition from the ocean floor.

INDUSTRY’S VIEW
MARITIME HOLL AND | NO. 6 | 2018
Where offshore wind and oil & gas meet Putting the offshore wind and oil & gas (O&G) industries in the same pot often creates a contrasting image: clean vs. dirty, green vs. black, new vs. old. A lot can be said about them being opposites.
028
Testing this transfer method on a wider scale showed that W2W is a safe and efficient alternative to conventional offshore accommodation and transfer methods. This is especially true for tasks such as turbine commissioning, inter-array cable installations and personnel and cargo transfers in higher sea states. After gaining this insight and following the demand of big industry players like Siemens, Ørsted or Vestas for safe and reliable year-round maintenance, a whole new vessel type was introduced to the market – the Service Operation Vessel (SOV). Several shipowners, traditionally only active in the O&G sector, took the chance and offered newly-built, tailor-made vessels or conversions to fulfil this demand against long-term charter contracts. Yet, it is not just the shipowners that can benefit from the exchange of knowledge and experience. The safety of the offshore workers – essentially the most important assets – is improving significantly, too. While crew transfer operations in the North Sea’s O&G sector have been mainly conducted by helicopters, which are statistically a very safe method of transferring personnel, in many other regions of the world, swing roping, bumpand-jump or baskets are still common methods of offshore access. After the extensive W2W experience gained in the renewables sector over the last years, Ampelmann – as the leading While that may seem true at first glance, the two have more

RSD Tug Innovation The RSD Tug 2513 Innovation is a new harbour tug design developed by Damen Shipyards. The vessel is characterised by a compact, wide hull with a high freeboard and, consequently, a large dynamic stability. The hull is provided with two high-aspect ratio fins, instead of the usual skeg at the centreline, to achieve predictable and stable sailing characteristics. RSD is short for Reversed Stern Drive, which refers to the tug’s double bow at both ends of the vessel, with equal height. Therefore, it can operate safely and optimally as both a front and stern tug. Together with several knowledge institutes and owners of this type of vessel, Damen Shipyards has worked on the development of this concept for more than four years. The ultimate goal was to achieve a safer, sustainable and efficient harbour tug, capable of handling the ever larger (container) vessels. This required a large installed power of 4480 kW and high bollard pull (ahead 75 tonnes, astern 70 tonnes), whereas vessel dimensions and draught remain limited to be able to operate in narrow spaces and restricted water depth. The development of this tug received subsidies from the EU (the Horizon 2020 project Lean Ships) and Dutch research funds. The design of the RSD Tug 2513 can be seen as a further development and improvement of the so called tractor-tug that was developed by Voith-Schneider a long time ago and This development is a step forward compared to the Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tug.

The aluminium vessel, fitted with an innovative hybrid operating system, redefines the highest standards for this specific market segment. For a large part of the time, the ship operates at low patrol speeds. Ship inspections must, however, be carried

out swiftly and safely, and in the case of emergencies, the ship has to be able to operate at high speed. In all of these conditions, the ship must operate with low fuel consumption and a low level of emissions. In addition, the ship must comply with the requirements set for the height of radiated waves, both at cruising speed and maximum power. The Fast Displacement Hull developed by Van Oossanen, fitted with a Hull Vane, turned out to be the right platform for Kooiman to start the design. The propulsion system has been developed in collaboration with Hybrid Ship Propulsion (HSP). In the past few years, a number of coasters have been converted for other purposes, such as fishfood carriers, cement carriers and roro-vessels for the offshore wind industry. Usually, these have been fairly young vessels – sometimes even mothballed during construction – that were confronted with the turndown of the shortsea shipping market. A conversion was the way to save on build time and build costs, resulting a cost-effective but still very much specialised ship. The story of DC Brugge is a little bit different. Aggregate dredging

Dredging The dredging for material is somewhat different than maintenance or land reclamation dredging. In this case, it’s not so important what is removed from the seabed, but it is important what ends up in the hopper. To ensure consistent quality of the granulate, which means grains of a similar size, the dredge pump discharges on a large sieve on deck. Both the perforated top of the sieve and its angle can be varied, ensuring that only the right grains go to the hopper, while the rest is discharged immediately overboard. The dredging pump is a single-walled diesel-driven inboard pump, connected to a 600 mm dredge pipe. The maximum dredging depth is 30 metres. A power-take-off on the diesel engine which drives the dredge pump is used to provide hydraulic power for the dredge pipe derricks and the dry unloading system. All ballast tanks aboard were converted to void spaces, eliminating the need for a ballast water treatment system, except for two. These are used for an anti-heeling system. On each side there is 35 tons of technical fresh water, which can be pumped to starboard or portside with a Veth Ballastjet pump. This pump is controlled manually on the bridge. While the engine room in the aft ship remained largely as before, Kooiman created a new pump room forward, with a generator in it and a 378 kW motor for the bow thruster. This is a 4-channel thruster, enabling thrust in any direction. Dredging is typically done at a speed of two to three knots, but it is possible to do this with the current propulsion system As part of the new accommodation, a

RADAR DETECTS OIL SPILLS
Oil spill recovery For many years DC dredging has had a contract with the Dutch government to supply an on-call oil spill recovery service. All their dredgers are equipped with a derrick and and an oil recovery boom with integrated floating pump, to quickly intervene in the case of an oil spill. The vessels are ideally suited for this, as they are always operating in or near the North Sea, and have sufficient capacity in the hopper to transport a large amount of fuel. DC Brugge will enter the same pool of vessels and therefore has also been equipped with the oil spill recovery equipment. Additionally, the vessel has a Sens2Sea radar signal processing system, which can detect oil spills at a distance by analysing the wave pattern. The company Sens2Sea, based in Schiedam, claims the system can detect a spill as small as three litres. The same system can be used to detect small floating objects in a rough sea, for example for search & rescue operations. As every dredger working on aggregates dredging, the vessel is equipped with a blackbox, making every movement traceable. This ensures that every contractor stays within the designated areas for which they have acquired a concession.
Delivery time in January 2017, the hull of DC Eems was scanned in February 2017 and the vessel arrived for the conversion at the shipyard at the end of April 2017. The aft ship was in a slightly worse condition than expected, so there was quite a bit of work to bring that to current standards. She was delivered in June 2018 and renamed to DC Brugge. The vessel flies the Dutch flag and is classed under Bureau Veritas. 043

DC BRUGGE
Circular economy It’s remarkable to see how a vessel, of which the aft ship dates from 1974, the foreship from 2001 and the main engine from 2010, was upgraded to a fully functional, modern and profitable dredging vessel. While ship recycling is common nowadays, a significant amount of cost, work and energy is spent on dissecting the ship to its components. As the steel itself doesn’t age over time when maintained well, it seems to make perfect sense to do this type of major conversion on more ships, rather than sending them to the shipbreakers as now often happens with much newer coasters and offshore supply vessels. Upcycling is common in the construction industry, a rarity in the car industry and non-existing in the aviation industry. Is the shipbuilding industry ready for this next step of the circular economy, or was this just a one-off? Photo contributions by Kooiman Marine Group

A swell compensating system has been installed to maintain the dredge mouth position and pressure on the seabed at all times, when the vessel is dredging on the move. To facilitate the stationery dredging capability, or when dredging silt and mud, a dedicated suction mouth with high-pressure jets can be fitted, which loosens the seabed by injecting water into it. During normal trailing dredging, the drag head teeth - which are no longer useful when the vessel is stationary - cut into the riverbed in the normal fashion. When stationary dredging, the system

can maintain a required distance from the seabed to allow the pressure jets, referred to above, to work at their highest efficiency. The vessel is capable of discharging the dredged spoil by four different means. It can be dumped out of the bottom of the vessel through conical valves - of which there are seven at centreline in the hopper bottom. Alternatively, it can be pumped ashore from the bow through a (floating) pipeline or by what is known as ‘rainbowing’. This means discharging from the bow by means of a high-pressure spray,

to create an area of reclaimed land. When the liquefied material is being discharged, water injection pumps are employed, which liquefy the spoil via injection nozzles on both sides at the hopper bottom. Three suction points, situated opposite of the jet nozzles, lead the spoil into two bottom channels - transporting two times 800 cubic metres per hour to the bow discharge assembly. However, DC Orisant will primarily use its dry discharge system, which has twelve buckets on a vertical bucket wheel, scooping material from the hold onto a conveyor belt. Hollandia’s ‘King of PLET’s’ Last year Hollandia has fabricated a giant PLET (Pipeline End Termination) for SRI-EMAS in Ghana. This PLET consists of a 60 tons weighing frame, installed with complicated piping, valves and connectors. The special piping is made of carbon steel with an Inconel layer on the inside that can withstand extreme temperatures and aggressive gases. PLET’s are placed at the bottom of the sea, sometimes hundreds of meters deep and form the underwater infrastructure of an oil and gas field.

This special PLET, that bears the nicknames ‘Technological Jewel’ and ‘King of PLET’s’ has recently been placed at 850 metres deep in the Gulf of Guinee. Before placement it was first welded to the main pipeline.

tensile strength which makes it lighter to construct and is relatively corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant. Basically a golden combination. However, history has shown that the processing and welding of the material will not automatically lead to success. In the Netherlands PMF Mechanical is one of the companies where piping, high pressure vessels and large vessels are made in duplex and super duplex. In order to guarantee the special properties of this material in the products mentioned, the control of the welding process is important. At PMF, over the years knowledge and control have been extended in practice and, in cooperation with inter-national experts from the leading oil companies, these are being developed ever further. Based on this expertise and perfection of the manufacturing process, PMF Mechanical is among the select group of suppliers of duplex and super duplex vessels and piping which can meet the requirements for welding, materials, processing and coating.

No emission sustainable duty cycle cranes Cost efficiency and sustainability, two topics that are frequently discussed in the offshore, dredging and maritime industry. There are many developments and innovations going on in these areas. The company Mteck cranes has developed duty cycle 4-rope cranes with these characteristics. The wide range of Mteck cranes, all custom made, are mostly full electric driven. No risk of oil spill, very low maintenance costs. With the special developed Mteck crane software everyone can run these cranes. They are stronger and quicker and last but not least the costs per hour is the most efficient in the world. These cranes are ready for the future, it took the owners and the complete team of engineers two years to develop these heavy cranes. The assumptions were to make no concessions in lifting capacity and hoisting speeds and still run on very low energy costs per hour. Because the long-term costs and sustainability are already taken into account with the development of these cranes, it was possible to make the cranes not just more sustainable in the use but also with the purchase. The materials that are used for these cranes are namely produced in a durable way and therefore last more than 30 years.

The industry’s first heave-compensated drill floor In the near future a large number of wells need to be drilled in the North Sea with MPD from floaters. The key challenge for floating rigs in the North Sea is reduction of NPT caused by downhole issues and Waiting on Weather, which can range from 15 to 35 per cent. MPD on floaters is difficult as heave causes downhole pressure fluctuations. This applies to both surface backpressure and CML type MPD systems. By introducing the Heave Compensated Floor (HCF), a movable drill floor which can heave compensate the tubulars when hung-off in the slips, creates a way of handling tubulars which is heave compensated anytime, enabling MPD system on floaters in heavy seas. The HCF can work in two modes. Conventional fixed to vessel mode; the floor is lowered flush with the main deck. Riser tensioners support the riser via a TJ. And also above mentioned HC mode; hydraulic cylinders compensate the floor. The TJ is fully stroked out.

When it comes to lashing and lifting, industries across the globe have always used steel chains to get the job done. These chains are strong, but they are also heavy, awkward to use, and can damage the very products they are trying to serve. Now, Green Pin Tycan – the leading manufacturer of rope and chain fittings – is transforming the way companies lift and lash with ultra-lightweight fibre chains. One of the most important innovations in recent years is the new Green Pin Tycan fibre chain, which is made with a fibre called Dyneema. It combines the almost paradoxical characteristics of being feather light and soft to the touch while providing the strength of steel. Green Pin Tycan is up to eight times lighter than a steel chain while providing the same tough and resilient strength. Green Pin Tycan has been thoroughly tested in production facilities and in real-life circumstances, and is qualified for both lashing and MARITIME HOLL AND | NO. 6 | 2018
lifting operations by DNV-GL . “We are very excited about bringing our innovative Green Pin Tycan Chain to market and delighted that world leading companies like Mammoet see the benefits of using it for both lashing and lifting,” says Anton van der Zalm, Vice President Research and Development at Green Pin. Indeed, it is the respect that the chain garners from respected industry players in terms of quality and performance that really makes people sit up and take notice. “Green Pin Tycan Chain is so light and easy to use that our team loves to work with it,” says Brian Steentjes, Manager Planning AE & EMD at Mammoet. “Combined with its soft touch, we believe Green Pin Tycan can reduce damage and injuries to cargo and crew alike.” 070

DNV GL’s 2018 Energy Transition Outlook, an independent forecast of the world energy mix, predicts global upstream gas capital expenditure to grow from 960 billion dollar in 2015, to a peak of 1.13 trillion dollar in 2025. Liquefied natural gas capacity will also increase as production rises. DNV GL expects it to double by the late 2040’s, as the sector connects shifting sources of gas with changing demand centres. Seaborne gas trade is forecast to treble from North America to China by 2050. An increase in trade from Sub-Saharan Africa to the Indian Subcontinent and South East Asia is also expected. 071

change in the approach to the design of offshore accommodation modules if the term ‘lightweight’ was to be meaningful. The weight of offshore platform topsides has an impact on the overall CAPEX & OPEX. In many cases today’s topsides have reached their weight limitations. Accurate calculation and management of the topsides weight is becoming a critical factor. H2M has invented lightweight accommodation and workspace modules that are less than half the weight of comparable steel units without compromising the quality end high industry standards. The idea was picked up by the front runners of the escort tug world and Kooiman has been asked to design a retractable staple that could receive a line already connected to the escorted vessel. Positioned on the most forward possible position of the escort tug, this would make the last bit of bringing the vessel to the quay much easier and faster. When not in use, it is retracted, leaving a flush and free forward bulwark. All Kooiman towing pins have a LR Design Appraisal and standaard designs are made. Monitoring streak for ECE’s OASYS The year 2018 has been a good year for OASYS Cable. The cable monitoring system is deployed for more than 150 days on the construction of one of the largest offshore wind farms in the UK. To provide customers with real-time installation data during the project, OASYS cable monitoring units were also used at Borkum Riffgrund and Kriegers Flak during the summer season of 2018. The system has been utilised successfully to monitor the cable’s integrity and to visualise subsea objects and features in real time, such as the cable protection system, the quadrant, cable trenches and scouring pits. “This year has proven that OASYS Cable is a mature cable installation survey solution that exceeds other systems in terms of accuracy and workability. New features, in order to meet and exceed future demands in our journey towards ROV-less cable monitoring, are planned for 2019,” said Reinier Nagtegaal, CEO at ECE Offshore. OASYS Cable creates a live 3D image of the seabed bathymetry and automatically detected cable, making it more accurate, faster and less sensitive to human error. OASYS also features automatic position monitoring and tracking of subsea tools. New features such as pipelay

monitoring are under development.
A few years ago, Pronomar successfully started the cooperation with Jo Bird & Co. Ltd, a company dedicated to designing and manufacturing safety equipment storage. This development lead to an exclusive product line of GRP drying cabinets. The combination of Pronomar’s robust drying systems, together with JoBird’s high performance cabinets, resulted in a reliable solution for offshore applications. Companies that require a drying cabinet for their immersions suits, life vests, rebreathers etc. on deck, that have to endure the most severe weather conditions, are at the right address with Pronomar and Jo Bird. Especially for those industries where the most inhospitable environmental situations can occur, the GRP drying cabinets are in MARITIME HOLL AND | NO. 6 | 2018
high demand. The GRP cabinets can weather temperatures of -40C to +50C and can resist tempestuous circumstances with water, ice, sand, dust and wind, from hurricane-force winds to sandstorms. The fitted drying systems inside the cabinets use a large amount of warm air, which flow through continuous stainless steel hangers. The efficient way of drying ensures that the level of hygiene significantly increases, staff illness decreases and the team moral improves, while at the time the lifespan of the equipment will be prolonged. Recently, BP purchased GRP drying cabinets for a project in Kazakhstan, which ultimately proves the level of quality.

IHC launches installation technology for offshore wind sector Royal IHC introduces its new solution for the installation of monopiles – the Dynamic Outrigger Frame. This is designed to install wind turbine foundations from a floating heavy lift vessel, which is kept in position by means of a dynamic positioning (DP) system. The Dynamic Outrigger Frame ensures the correct pile position, orientation and verticality during the pile-driving process. With this solution no anchors need to be deployed to keep the vessel in position, which results in reduced installation cycle times. In addition, redundancy in its architecture provides a highly reliable system that can maintain operations in severe sea conditions. IHC has an extensive track record for designing and delivering crucial technology such as handling and clamp tools, hoisting and motion compensation systems, and dynamic positioning/dynamic tracking systems. This new solution is another example of the company’s innovative technological developments. The system can handle monopiles with a diameter of between six and ten metres. With

additional options – such as a noise mitigation system, operator training simulator and the ability to increase the monopile diameter – IHC is able to provide a turnkey solution for the offshore wind market.
With Viega Seapress, Viega Nederland offers a pipeline system that was specially developed for shipbuilding applications. The system meets high material requirements and can be installed easily, safely and quickly thanks to the cold press technology. In addition to the standard version, a Seapress XL version is also available, so that pipe installations in sizes 15 to 108 can be pressed. Viega Seapress is characterized by the use of cold pressing technology. Pipe lines are not connected to each other by means of welding or groove connection, but with a press fitting and pressing machine. The cold pressing technique has a number of important advantages. Working with a pressing machine and press fittings is a lot faster. In a few steps the connection is a fact: inserting, pressing and ready. A welding installation is therefore no longer required for a connection. MARITIME HOLL AND | NO. 6 | 2018
Unnecessary lugging with gas bottles and fire-prone situations will therefore be canceled. Depending on the size, Viega Seapress can save between 30 and 70 percent on assembly time. The fittings of the Seapress system consist of a copper-nickel-iron alloy where a small amount of manganese has been added. This alloy meets the stringent requirements for seawater applications. Viega Seapress is also part of the Viega system technology. This allows the system to be easily combined with other Viega systems on board ships and offshore installations. 080
