We established the Visionary Awards to publicly recognize the achievements of female business owners and leaders, and we appreciate you taking the time to celebrate with us. Kylie has anchored, reported and produced throughout her career. She has

reported on massive wildfires, the arrest of FLDS leader Warren Jeffs, severe floods and many other stories of national significance.

2019 Visionary Award Presenters Johna Cripe, Harmony Senior Relocation Services—presenting Entrepreneur Scholarship Johna Cripe is a founding partner of Harmony Senior Relocation Services established in 2015. After orchestrating the downsizing move for her in-laws, Johna realized that other senior adults might also welcome assistance with their own transition. Johna knows first hand that downsizing is not only physically demanding and time-consuming, but is also an emotional job for many seniors and their familes. Johna is an active board member of the Boomers & Beyond association, and a member in good standing of the National Association of Senior Move Managers. Prior to starting Harmony, Johna spent 25 years in the marketing research industry, and for 13 of those years was the partner/owner of a qualitative marketing research company, Blue Sky. She led project initiatives both domestically and internationally for key clients such as Eli Lilly, Merck, MedImmune, Centocor and others. Johna has a Master’s Degree in Market Research from The University of Georgia.

Michelle is a second generation hairstylist, the daughter of two

small business owners and is the founder of Edify Hair Care,

In 1988, the restaurant was sold and Beth made the jump to B&W, initially in an accounting role. As time passed, she gradually took on more of a leadership role in the company. As her parents began making plans for retirement, she along with 2 partners, purchased the business. Owning a small business is both a challenging and exhilarating process! Being a woman that owns a construction business is like being at the top of the roller coaster every day!

The satisfaction of helping a customer solve a problem is like none she has ever experienced. She is equally committed to her peers in business. She currently serves in the Programs Committee of NAWBO, where she’s been a member since 2003. She is also the Vice President of the Speedway Chamber of Commerce and on the Better Business Bureau’s Board of Directors.

Chelci R. Hunter, DBELO, Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation Ms. Hunter joined the IndyGo team in February 2017 as the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Liaison Officer (DBELO). In this position she is responsible for planning and facilitating vendor engagements as outreach and networking opportunities. Chelci is accountable for initiating vendor communications specifically revolving around certified minority, women, veteran, disabled, and disadvantaged businesses. Chelci completes these tasks by educating the community on the importance of the IndyGo Supplier Diversity program, hosting networking events and workshops, and holding personal one-on-one meetings with vendors interested in doing business with IndyGo. She believes relationships bridge barriers related to certified businesses receiving contract awards.

Networking with other local governmental entities and municipal corporations, and compliance is a continual focus of hers. Chelci is passionate about breaking barriers, improving extraordinary economic growth of the Indianapolis community, creating a level playing field, and increasing access for small businesses.

INDIANAPOLIS CHOICE AWARD AWARD CRITERIA The Indianapolis Choice award honors one outstanding individual who serves as a powerful advocate for NAWBO-Indianapolis and woman-owned businesses throughout the state. EMERGING ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR Andrea Marie Sloan, GroundBreakers, LLC Andrea is a native Hoosier and grew up on the northeast side of Indianapolis.  A product of Indianapolis Public Schools and is an Indiana University graduate.  Prior to graduating high school, she joined the Army and served for 6 years under the Adjutant General Branch as an Information Specialist.  She earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Affairs from Indiana University, Indianapolis and was selected to participate in the Indiana Leadership Program while interning with the Indiana Secretary of State’s office, under Todd Rokita.  After graduating, Andrea pursued a career in the finance industry and acquired her securities and insurance licenses. She worked as an Asset Manager at Fifth Third Bank and then an Internal Sales Wholesaler at Capital Group.  She stepped away from her career to raise her children until they started school and then subsequently started a Project Management and Consulting firm.  Adona Group was started in 2014 and worked with many clients including the Indiana Office of Technology and various local businesses.  She also consulted for the Indiana Department of Veteran Affairs and worked closely on the Governor’s Next Level Jobs initiative which focused on job placement and career development for veterans and transitioning service members within Indiana.  As, part of this initiative, Andrea worked with the Indiana Construction Roundtable to connect service members to construction jobs.  In 2018, Andrea had the opportunity to become President of GroundBreakers, Hydro Vac Excavation Services, and in 2019, after leading GroundBreakers for over a year, she took a majority ownership stake in the company.  She is laser focused on expanding its services offerings in Indianapolis and providing services in other states within the US.  Andrea is energized daily to work with the GroundBreakers’ team and excited about GroundBreakers’ outlook.

MEMBER OF THE YEAR Carol Curran, Phoenix Data Corporation Carol Curran is both a successful entrepreneur and champion for women everywhere. As someone who desires to live in a world where there are more women-owned businesses, Carol dedicates most of her time to connecting women to one another and creating opportunities for women to thrive throughout Indiana and beyond. Having started Phoenix Data Corporation in 2001, Carol leveraged her expertise in the technology industry, all while completely self-funding her firm’s growth and success. After the realization of her firm’s needs in niche industries, Carol accumulated numerous contracts with the State of Indiana, health care and logistics partners, and the United States Department of Defense. In addition to her professional work, Carol is highly involved within many boards and multiple health associations in Indianapolis. Carol is the past president of the Indianapolis Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and current president of the NAWBO-Indy Foundation, as well as an advisory board member for Enterprising Women and a member for the Indiana Chamber of Commerce. Carol is also an active member of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, Women in Defense and has served on the National Advisory Board of Key4Women as part of KeyCorp’s focus on women in business. At the end of the day, Carol stands by her core values of “courage, commitment, compassion and character,” and introduces those traits to everyone that she does business with. Carol is a tireless advocate for women business owners, as well as women everywhere – making her an individual that others seek out to become.

WOMAN BUSINESS OWNER OF THE YEAR Janet South, DECO Coatings Inc.

Janet South has served as President and owner of DECO Coatings, since its incorporation in 1995. DECO Coatings is an industrial coating/painting contractor which applies liquid protective high-performance coatings to extend the life of infrastructure by reducing corrosion. DECO’s manufacturing style 30,000 sfcontrolled environment is QP3 Certified to comply with DOT and military coating specifications. What began with a paint brush & roller knocking on doors evolved into an industrial 2-acre campus with 12 overhead cranes from 3-ton up to 10ton capacity. Janet has treated the company like a cruise ship rather than a row boat. Janet oversees company operations, finances, reviews and directs proposal preparation, and contract negotiation. Janet is a certified WBE, DBE, ACDBE, and two national certifications has been an active member of NAWBO-Indy since she joined in 2007 and was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors then NAWBO National Presidents’ Assembly. She serves on Indiana Subcontractors Association (ISA) Education Committee. Immersed in the construction industry, she is active in public policy for job training focused on technical education pathways for those who are wired to work with their hands. She belongs to the National Protective Coatings Society, Indiana Fabricators, and Indiana Constructors. Janet has been recognized for mentoring, business, promoting women in business, women in construction, best business practices, and philanthropic efforts. In addition, Janet supported Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom wounded soldiers and their family members in Washington, D.C. and San Antonio, Texas from 2004-2011 while assisting her critically wounded Marine during his extensive recovery. She continues efforts through a veteran’s caregiving program. Janet lives in Greenwood, Indiana with her husband, Kirby. They have 3 adult children, 3 grandchildren, and 7 grand dogs. Janet is the passenger on their Harley Davidson motorcycles. One is named Therapy and the other is The Hulk…yes, it is green. Janet and Kirby love to pack for motorcycle trips and experience adventure: no interstate and no map.
