15th Annual Trailblazers Luncheon Trailblazers began in 2005 as NAWBO-Indianapolis sought to have successful women business leaders in the community share their stories with other woman entrepreneurs. From that first panel of five women to the ones here today, Trailblazers has annually sparked conversations about how to grasp opportunities, overcome challenges, build successful careers and businesses, balance work and family and give back to community.

Each panelist’s willingness to open her heart and share her journey has had a lasting impact on other women. Their vision and determination are inspiring, and the trails they have blazed continue to move women forward everywhere. NAWBO-Indianapolis is pleased to present Trailblazers 2019, its 15th annual luncheon, in a continuing effort to empower, inspire and educate women of all ages, especially women business owners. We’ve included quotes that have inspired some of our previous Trailblazers throughout this year’s program.

Do one thing every day that scares you. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

Angela Adams Owner and Managing Attorney, Adams Immigration Law Angela’s experience with both family and employment-based immigration is extensive and well-rounded. Having practiced since 2004 as Associate Attorney at Lewis & Kappes for seven years, as Equity Partner at Lewis & Kappes for two years, and as Associate General Counsel for immigration at Indiana University (IU) for three years, Angela has used her expertise in immigration law to help clients navigate the complex and often confusing world of immigration. Because she has personally petitioned for family and helped numerous good friends with their own cases, she understands the practical and emotional difficulties involved in family-based immigration cases. Her knowledge and experience uniquely position her to own, operate, and manage Adams Immigration Law, LLC. As a native Hoosier who grew up in Carmel, Indiana, Angela explains how her duty and purpose connect in practicing immigration law: “People ask me all of the time: why can’t undocumented immigrants just get legal? Because this question came up time and time again in my role as an Education Consultant for the Indiana Department of Education, I was resolved to finding answers and therefore became an attorney. I found duty and purpose in educating employers, universities, immigrants, and the collective community on how the immigration system actually operates. With my understanding of immigration law and background in education, government, internal corporate structure, human resources, and international services, I seek to serve this great community and work as a bridge between employers, legislators, special interest groups, and immigrants.”

16

NAWBO-Indianapolis

Angela is past Chair of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Indiana Chapter. As a frequently requested speaker and writer on various immigration issues, Angela has consulted on immigration policy in the Indiana General Assembly and in Washington, D.C. In addition, Angela served as the Midwest Regional Coordinator for “Bibles, Badges, and Business for Immigration Reform, a project of the National Immigration Forum in Washington, D.C. She also served as co-counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to oppose parts of the Indiana immigration law which were struck down as unconstitutional. She was a driving force behind the Indiana Compact, a statement of principles to guide a productive conversation on immigration, and also served on the Indiana Farm Bureau Policy Advisory Group. Angela has long been committed to the issue of in-state tuition for undocumented and DACA students in the state of Indiana and recently advised lawmakers on professional licensing for DACA recipients. In 2014, Angela was recognized by the Indiana Latino Scholarship Fund (ILSF) for her efforts to increase educational opportunities for immigrant students. In 2013 and 2014, she was honored by the Indianapolis Business Journal (IBJ) with the Women of Influence Award and Forty Under 40 honor. In 2018, she was recognized by the Indiana University Latino Alumni Association as Distinguished Alumni of the Year. As a seasoned and objective professional, Angela is prepared to help businesses and universities in any immigration matter. Melody Birmingham-Byrd SVP and Chief Procurement Officer, Duke Energy Melody Birmingham-Byrd is senior vice president and chief procurement officer for Duke Energy. In this role, she is responsible for both the sourcing and supply chain functions for the company’s regulated and commercial operations. She assumed her current position in November 2018. Previously, Birmingham-Byrd served as president of Duke Energy’s Indiana operations, the state’s largest electric utility, serving approximately 825,000 customers in 69 of Indiana’s 92 counties. She was responsible for the customer experience and financial performance of Duke Energy’s regulated utilities in Indiana, in addition to managing rates and regulatory strategy, government affairs and community relations. Birmingham-Byrd has more than 24 years of leadership and managerial experience in the electric and automotive manufacturing industries. She has served in roles within distribution, transmission and fossil generation. Prior to the merger between Duke Energy and Progress Energy in July 2012, Birmingham-Byrd served as vice president of the Southern Region for Progress Energy Carolinas. Prior to becoming Indiana’s state president in June 2015, Birmingham-Byrd served as senior vice president of Midwest delivery operations, overseeing the company’s electric distribution system in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. This included construction, maintenance, operations, engineering, and resource and project management.

18

Birmingham-Byrd currently serves on several community, state and industry boards, including the United Way of Central Indiana, Special Olympics Indiana, Indiana Energy Association, Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, American Association of Blacks in Energy, Marian University Board of Trustees and the University of Missouri Financial Research Institute. Birmingham-Byrd also serves as an independent director on the boards of 1st Source Corporation and 1st Source Bank. She was also pivotal in launching Duke Energy’s Indiana Business Women’s Network, an organization that provides the company’s women a forum for enriching their work experience at the company. AS YOU CONTINUE ALONG YOUR PATH OF SUCCESS, AND YOU HAVE MORE MONEY THAN YOU NEED, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?

Moira Carlstedt President and CEO, Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership As president of the Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership, Moira Carlstedt is charged with finding ways not just to place low- and moderate-income families in their own homes, but also to keep them there. A former director of the city’s Department of Metropolitan Development, she has moved from working with the city’s most high-profile public projects to myriad smaller efforts that help create a more financially secure population. Moira spent the first years of her working life in the private sector. She never considered going “public” until she became director of the Department of Metropolitan Development at the behest of then-mayor Steve Goldsmith. In 1998, she signed on with the INHP, a not-for-profit engaged in home ownership education, housing finance and community development. Her leadership allowed it to survive the upheaval caused by the mortgage crisis. Lately one of her biggest hassles has been keeping INHP clients abreast of exactly what mortgage companies demand these days from potential clients. “Families we serve in our homeownership preparation program are challenged by changing expectations as to the requirements to secure an appropriate mortgage they can sustain over the long term,” Carlstedt said.

20

NAWBO-Indianapolis

Not that such difficulties have led to a slowdown in interest. Far from it. The INHP has experienced unprecedented demand for three reasons: historically low interest rates; an abundance of housing inventory; and a general recognition that success as a long-term homeowner requires preparation, and that it’s never too soon to start down that road. Carlstedt has spent much of her time introducing hardnosed private business practices into INHP’s operations. Two of her biggest accomplishments are collecting data on people the organization helps in order to develop well-grounded, data-based strategies for the future. She also led the implementation of multiple loan pools to create INHP-direct mortgages for low- and moderate-income families. During her tenure she’s executed five loan pools totaling more than $100 million in capital, making loans to more than 3,000 families between 2000 and 2010. In the coming years Carlstedt sees two major challenges: preparing her clientele for home ownership in a world of ever-changing rules, and coping with ever-increasing demand for her group’s services. “INHP must remain disciplined, accountable and transparent regarding our purpose and capacity to execute our mission,” she said. In her free time Carlstedt enjoys reading, hiking and spending time with her friends and family—husband Bill and their three grown children, Matt, Kate and John. “It wouldn’t be uncommon to find me wandering one of the city’s museums on a weekend,” she said. She was recognized in 2010 as an IBJ Woman of Influence. AS YOU CONTINUE ALONG YOUR PATH OF SUCCESS, AND YOU HAVE MORE MONEY THAN YOU NEED, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?

Increase my philanthropic support. Take more risks!

Barbara Duncombe Practice Group Chair and Partner, Taft Stettinius & Hollister Barbara is an attorney who advises regional and national businesses on the legal and compliance issues that arise when doing business with the government. For over 25 years, she has worked with general counsel, business decision makers, prime contractors, subcontractors, and public buyers on a variety of public contracts issues. Barbara’s collegial, hands-on approach with clients has established her as a go-to resource for help with resolving public contract formation, administration, performance, payment, and dispute resolution issues. When necessary, Barbara has successfully used Alternative Dispute Resolution and litigation to resolve her clients’ government contracts issues. She has experience litigating protests in front of the Government Accountability Office (GAO), federal claims before the Armed Services Board of Contract Appeals (ASBCA), protests and federal claims before the U.S. Court of Federal Claims (COFC) and other procurement-related matters in various federal and state jurisdictions. Barbara’s extensive knowledge and track record in government contracts are among the reasons why she has been honored repeatedly by the Dayton Business Journal and the State of Ohio General Assembly and has been asked to lecture about government contract and procurement issues nationally and internationally at the George Washington University School of Law Government Contract Program, the United Nations, UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Panama Canal Commission.

22

NAWBO-Indianapolis

Barbara is just as active in her community as she is in the courtroom. Barbara plays an active role in helping promote accessible, affordable housing in the Ohio area as a board member of County Corp. Barbara helps promote accessible, quality education as a member of the Wright State University Foundation Board of Trustees. Barbara also is actively engaged as a member of Taft’s Executive Board. Barbara earned her J.D. with honors from George Washington University School of Law and received her B.A. from American University’s School of International Service. Barbara is also highly-awarded, with recognitions from Dayton Business Journal as a “Who’s Who in Aerospace & Defense” Honoree and Dayton BizWomen Power 50 Honoree, from The Business Journal as an Influencer: Law List Honoree, from the General Assembly of the State of Ohio as an Outstanding Achievement Award Honoree, from Dayton Business Journal as a 50 Most Influential Women Honoree, and from her own organization as a Robert A. Taft Service and Leadership Award Honoree. AS YOU CONTINUE ALONG YOUR PATH OF SUCCESS, AND YOU HAVE MORE MONEY THAN YOU NEED, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH IT?

I can’t wait until that time comes! I have been and will continue to invest in social organizations which provide educational opportunities and emotional safety for children and women, at home and abroad.

Going above and beyond.

Real progress starts with people who are inspired to make a difference. At Duke Energy, inspiration is our fuel. It’s what drives us to generate the power of innovation. Here’s to those who look at things differently. Those who set the example. Those who inspire and serve others. And with that, Duke Energy congratulates Melody BirminghamByrd, the other Trailblazers, and NAWBO-Indianapolis.
