Senior Center Newsletter April & May 2022

In alignment with Cook County and the State of Illinois

MASKS RECOMMENDED

NOT REQUIRED FOR PATRONS & STAFF

Some exceptions may apply; patrons will be notified in advance. We ask the community to continue to show kindness, empathy and respect to others.

Hello Senior Center Members!

Since our last Momentum, I want to share with you the feedback I have received. So far, the top six areas (in no particular order) in which members have expressed interest are health and wellness education, trips, music and entertainment, arts and crafts, games and current events. This is by no means a comprehensive list; however, it is a starting point that I have used as a guide to schedule some programs for April and May that I hope will pique your interest.

In the area of health and wellness, arthritis is one of the most widespread health conditions among older adults. Therefore, in partnership with the Arthritis Foundation of Illinois and in observance of Arthritis Awareness Month in May, we will be offering you some special programs. See page 8 for details. For those seeking an opportunity to be creative, try a fun acrylic pour painting class, create a hanging macrame plant holder, or participate in one of our Art & Art History sessions.

Interested in music and entertainment, then I hope you’ll register for our upcoming trip to The Fireside Theatre for What Happens in Vegas. See page 11 for more information. America’s Musical Heritage series along with the Great American Music: Broadway Musicals series will have you exploring a wide variety of music along with facilitated discussions.

For game aficionados, join others with a similar passion and attend one of our Drop-In programs. Plus, try our new Game Day on the first and third Wednesday each month listed under our Drop-In programs. Games are good exercises for the brain and help improve one’s memory and problemsolving skills. Whether you’re playing cards, Scrabble, chess, backgammon or checkers, a fun time can be had by all. Please bring your own game supplies.

If you enjoy discussing what’s going on in the world, then join our Tuesday Current Events group.

As I begin to work on summer programming for you, I invite you to share your ideas with me. My door is always open, and I welcome the opportunity to chat with you in-person, on the phone or via email. I want to hear from you! Eilleen

The Northbrook Senior Center Knitting and Crocheting Group was featured in the Northbrook Herald for their homemade gifts of warmth and comfort that makes an impact in the community. Most recently, the knitters and crocheters created a colorful array of hats, mittens, and scarves that they donated to Senator Julie Morrison’s donation drive to help keep kids in foster care warm this winter. Senator Morrison personally thanked the group and presented them with a Certificate of Recognition for their generous donation of handmade items.

IN REMEMBRANCE…

Thank you Madeleine Fern and the Park Larks Singing Group for their donation in memory of Charles “Chuck” Sansone who was a valued member of the Northbrook Park Larks.

TPAC Membership Options and Rates

Track use requires a TPAC or Track Only Membership, or a daily fee of $4 for residents and $6 for non-residents.

* Senior Center Membership now includes complimentary access to the track on Mondays from 11am-1pm! This limited time offer is in effect through April 25.

I am a member of the Senior Center. Does my Senior Center membership include use of TPAC? No. TPAC membership is separate from the Senior Center membership. Members of the Senior Center need to be a TPAC member or pay a daily fee to attend group fitness classes, open gyms or use the fitness floor or track at TPAC.

Do I need a membership to attend group fitness classes at TPAC?

There are two options. The first is to have a full membership which includes access to regular group fitness classes, use of the track, participation in all open gyms and use of the fitness floor. The other option is to pay the daily fee. Daily admission includes group fitness classes, use of the track, use of the fitness floor, and open gym participation on that day. Daily admission is being offered at a

discounted rate of $18 for Northbrook Park District residents and $23 for non-residents.

Will group fitness classes be returning to the Leisure Center?

In 2022, a limited number of health and wellness programs will be added at the Leisure Center. The programs will be planned for older adults and will not be the same as group fitness classes at Techny Prairie Activity Center. Prior to the opening of TPAC, the fitness classes at the Leisure Center were offered to everyone but were often viewed as Senior Center classes because of the participants who chose to register. New and developing in 2022 are health and wellness programs targeted for Senior Center participants. Classes currently held at TPAC such as W.O.W., Chair Yoga and Zumba Gold, will not be duplicated at the Leisure Center.

Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC) Workshops & Specialty Classes
