Campus Catch Up Simon Says Words of wisdom from the Health & Safety Manager When I was first asked to write a column in the student magazine my immediate thought was of one of excitement (note to self to get out more!) For inspiration I turned to my daughters, both of whom can be classed as students. Being the classic parent, I proceeded to lecture them in relation to the disadvantages of loud noise and the effects that it has on your ears. My daughters’ theory in relation to music is why have it loud when you can have it really loud! The reality is that nearly half of young people experience hearing problems after being exposed to loud music, etc etc etc!!!!!

The point I want to make is this, we as humans are ‘Hunter Gatherers’. Because of this we need all our senses to be as finely tuned as possible. Placing headphones on our ears takes away quite a vital one. On a number of occasions there have been serious or fatal accidents in our local area where people have been listening to music on headphones and missed hearing either vehicles or trains approaching and, as a consequence, a collision has occurred. Unless you are related to The Terminator, all I ask is please think before you plug in and stay alert, Northbrook needs lerts!

Move It Musical Theatre students are the warm-up act for ‘Flawless’ - the amazing star finalist from Britain's Got Talent – at this year’s MOVE IT event at London’s Olympia. MOVE IT is the dance event taking Britain by storm! The show kicks off on 11th March at London's OIympia for an amazing four day celebration of dance in all its forms.

Student Success Northbrook Fashion Student in London Fashion Week Final A Fashion student made it to the final of the 2010 Fashion Awareness Direct Competition, beating hopefuls from 34 universities/colleges nationwide. Roxanne Goldstein was selected from over 100 entries and showcased her designs at Vauxhall Fashion Scout, as part of the off-schedule catwalk event. The brief required students to look back and explore the concept of memory to create a fashion legacy for future generations. Roxanne’s

whimsical designs are based on her love of Beatrix Potter and her outfits combine Victorian styling with contemporary pom-pom knits and appliqué rabbits. The judges included Linda Grant, Author of The Thoughtful Dresser; Sonnet Stanfill, Curator of 20th Century and Contemporary Fashion, V&A; Elizabeth Mcluskie, Fashion Buyer at Harrods and John Wolford, Director of Vauxhall Fashion Scout.

The final acts will go on to play to an audience of 23,000 and in front of celebrity judges, with the hope of winning the top prize of a recording contract and £30,000 investment. Abi said, “The competition has given me some great exposure so far which is really helpful for my career and I’m hoping the regional finals will help me to get more public recognition. My dream is not to be famous but to be appreciated for my work and simply to keep singing!”
