Towards 150 and Beyond

BE PART OF OUR NEXT 150 YEARS –GIVE THE GIFT OF OPPORTUNITY.

Newcastle High School for Girls is built on the pioneering spirit of determined women and for nearly 150 years we have educated our pupils to be pioneers. We have recognised and nurtured talent and determination and have been instrumental in educating and forming the characters of women who have gone on to be politicians, entrepreneurs, medical pioneers and held leadership positions across hundreds of industries.

Since we opened our doors in 1876, we have made the education of girls our priority and our bursaries have made this education accessible to girls from all walks of life for nearly 150 years.

Bursaries are embedded in our history, and we are committed to the advancement of women’s rights and equality through education. Bursaries help overcome the hurdles imposed by economic circumstance and break down the barriers to achievement faced by girls and young women.

15% of the pupils in our Senior School today are in receipt of a bursary award. This far exceeds the national average across the independent school sector of just over 1.5%. It is the extraordinary generosity, foresight and understanding of our school community that makes this possible.

We are now in the 150th year of the Girls’ Day School Trust, and as we approach our own 150th anniversary in 2026, we want to highlight the significant impact bursaries have upon our pupils and how education has the power to change lives and minds.

I am delighted to send you this Philanthropy Review to thank all our alumnae and friends that have given so generously to our School and hope that it conveys how much your support is valued and appreciated and that your generosity is making a difference.

Thank you for believing in us and what we do, and thank you for believing in the amazing young women of the North East who have so much to contribute.

I hope you will join us in our efforts to build our bursary endowment and invest in the future of the North East by giving the gift of education to our next generation of talented and determined girls.

Yours sincerely

03

For generations, NHSG and its predecessor schools have educated and shaped the young women of the North East, providing an inspiring and rigorous education founded on academic and sporting achievement, friendship, tolerance, compassion, social responsibility, courage, self-reliance, enthusiasm and joy.

We are immensely proud of our distinguished history and of our important contribution to the education and emancipation of women. Since our earliest foundation in 1876, we have withstood some extraordinary challenges. War, pandemics, economic depression, strikes, nuclear threat and immense social change have all been met with the adaptability, courage, kindness and resilience that have characterised our schools. We are proud of the intelligent, fearless young women we have taught, who grasped the opportunities offered to them.

These women have come from all walks of life. Since we first opened our doors, bursaries have been fundamental to the ethos of the school. Hundreds of girls since have received their education here thanks to financial assistance. Our bursary programme remains an integral part of our School today and it is our mission to continue to make this educational opportunity accessible to girls and young women with potential and determination. We want to do this for even more pupils in the future – regardless of their economic circumstances or other hurdles they may face.

MEET SOME OF OUR BURSARY RECIPIENTS

05

Saffie Saine Year 8

Saffie joined us from Hazlewood Community Primary School in Wideopen and has been at NHSG for a full academic year. She has already made her mark, winning the School’s Embodiment of School Spirit as well as the Vane International Women’s Day Prize for her poem How Did She.

I was over the moon when I found out that I had won a bursary award to join NHSG. It is a very friendly community, and I don’t feel any different as a bursary holder, just lucky that I am here.

The School has changed my perspective, I feel prepared to take on any challenges and when I leave NHSG I would like to study Medicine.

Advice I would have liked to give myself: Be more organised!

Advice I would like to give to other girls considering applying for a bursary: Don’t worry, you will enjoy it - everyone here is kind and generous.

What would you like to say to anyone that has given or is considering giving to the NHSG bursary fund?

I would like to thank you so much for supporting me. It really does make a difference and I really do appreciate it – it really is worth it. It might not feel like much, but you are widening a young girl’s life and giving her face a bright smile.

07

Afefa Aymon Zamil Year 11

Afefa joined us in Year 7 from St. Bede’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Jarrow. She has now been at NHSG for four years and last year won the Gilliane Thompson Mathematics Prize and the Food Technology Prize.

I was very excited to learn I had won a bursary place at NHSG. Since being here, I have felt endlessly supported both educationally and pastorally; there are so many opportunities open to me here. Since starting at NHSG, I have realised that I can make a difference and like many of our alumnae, go on to make a big impact in my field – which I think will be Medicine for me.

Advice I would have liked to give myself before starting at NHSG: Don’t be nervous – everyone is very welcoming, and you will make new friends.

Advice I would like to give to other girls considering applying for a bursary: Be confident and try your best.

What would you like to say to anyone that has given or is considering giving to the NHSG bursary fund?

Just thank you – thank you so much for enabling me to have this opportunity and this experience.

Lucy Henderson Year 13 Deputy Head Girl

Lucy joined us last year from Tanfield Comprehensive School in County Durham. She holds the Reece Award, a Sixth Form bursary funded by the Reece Foundation for pupils who intend to pursue a career in STEM. She is a very active member of our school community and is Deputy Head Girl on the pupil leadership team, with particular responsibility for mental health issues and hidden disabilities.

NHSG has made me more independent and self-motived. It has changed the way I perceive myself and the world – I always thought I couldn’t do certain things because of where I come from, but here I am surrounded by people from different backgrounds, all succeeding and showing me that I can do anything.

I used to have social anxiety very badly before coming to NHSG – on my first day, I was terrified and ended up crying. I was treated with such kindness and understanding that I felt welcomed and like I belonged from day one.

I want to go to university (Oxbridge, Bath, Edinburgh or Imperial) to study either Theoretical Physics, Computer Science, Astrophysics or Engineering – and ideally to a Masters level. After that, I would really like to become a quantum computing engineer at the National Quantum Computing Centre that is going to open in 2023.

Advice I would have liked to give myself before starting at NHSG: There is nothing to be scared ofyou will make friends for life and be accepted properly, so there’s no need to be afraid of not fitting in.

Advice I would like to give to other girls considering applying for a bursary: Please, please 100000% go for it!

What would you like to say to anyone that has given or is considering giving to the NHSG bursary fund?

Thank you for the new life you have given me. I feel like I’m where I belong, and it’s like I’m an entirely different girl – I’m happy, taking advantage of all the opportunities you have given me, and I have so many friends!

Your kindness has changed my world, and I’ll always be grateful for it every single day.

Jessica Spearman Class of 2022 History at Cambridge University

Jessica joined us from Walkergate Community School in Walker in 2015 on a full Senior School bursary. Jessica excelled at NHSG and is now reading History at Cambridge University. Jessica was part of the pupil leadership team (responsible for Teaching and Learning), was House Captain and part of the Debating Society, FemSoc, History Society, Current Affairs Club, Oxbridge Club and our two most recent school musicals Grease and High School Musical. She also worked as a Young Language Leader supporting younger pupils in developing their linguistic skills.

The education and community at NHSG is like no other, the allgirl environment has meant that I have not felt uncomfortable in class discussions and it showed me the value of female contributions to education and the world in general. It puts you in the best position for future endeavours with a supportive network for years to come.

I have always felt completely supported by my peers and staff at NHSG, it has given me so many more prospects than I thought possible. Since attending NHSG I am now aware of all the things I can do and achieve. I have loved my time at NHSG, it has given me a mindset that will allow me take adversity and challenge head on and know that I can achieve anything.

Advice I would have liked to give myself: Don’t worry, you are just another pupil of NHSG, no different to anyone else.

Advice I would like to give to other girls considering applying for a bursary: Never feel out of place. You are so worthy of a place here and applying will truly change your life for the better and allow you to inspire so many more people.

What would you like to say to anyone that has given or is considering giving to the NHSG bursary fund?

Thank you endlessly. An infinite number of thank yous could not begin to cover my gratitude. Your kind donations have allowed me to receive a better education with better future prospects, and a community of support.

Jasmine Summers Class of 2015

Project Consultant at the Household of TRH

The Prince and Princess of Wales Governor at Newcastle High School for Girls

Jasmine joined Central Newcastle High School in 2007 on a bursary and was a member of the first cohort to graduate from Newcastle High School for Girls in 2015. She studied Economics at the University of Edinburgh, before moving to London to pursue a career in investment banking. She spent two and a half years at Lazard and is now a Project Consultant at The Household of TRH The Prince and Princess of Wales. Jasmine also sits on the Board of Governors for Newcastle High School for Girls, the youngest GDST Governor to date.

Having recent experience of school life, I hope to offer a fresh perspective to the Board and relish the opportunity to inspire younger generations of girls whose position I was recently in. Given my background, I’m especially keen to support the school with its bursaries and scholarships programme, as I strongly believe that nobody’s future should be limited by their childhood circumstances.

My bursary undoubtedly changed my life. NHSG opened doors to opportunities I could’ve only dreamed of at my previous school - from work experience opportunities, to sport, to the range of academic subjects. Being surrounded by such intelligent pupils, who were equally driven as me, and teachers who were truly passionate about education, gave me the belief that anything was possible, and I could go on to be whoever I wanted to be. I’m eternally grateful for the confidence and resilience the school taught me, and the people

I met from my school days. I hope one day I will be able to donate in order to give young girls the chance that I was once given, back when I was 11 years old.

Advice I would have liked to give myself: Savour your time at school because it will go by far too quickly.

Advice I would like to give to other girls considering applying for a bursary: Don’t underestimate the power of education and the opportunities a school like NHSG can offer.

If you’re considering applying for a bursary… Do it!

What would you like to say to anyone that has given or is considering giving to the NHSG bursary fund?

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your generosity will change a young girl’s life.

UNLOCKING HER FULL POTENTIAL

Everyone should have access to an outstanding education. Here at NHSG, we believe that every girl with the determination and aptitude should be given the opportunity to realise her full potential. Our bursaries are awarded based on financial need and academic potential while our scholarships are awarded for outstanding academic merit, are non means tested and funded by the school.

NHSG bursaries and scholarships are available to any pupil and are allocated on entry either to Year 7 or to the Sixth Form. When awarding bursaries, a range of factors are considered in addition to financial circumstances – for Year 7, this includes entrance exam performance, the statement received from primary school and how a pupil engages in an interview situation. Entry for Year 12 is assessed by interview and previous academic performance. However, what is also vital is that we consider the potential of each applicant, whether the pupil will thrive in the educational environment NHSG offers and what contributions they may make to the school community. This approach ensures that our awards are made to the girls and young women who will benefit most – this is vital given that we have limited awards available and receive far more applications than we can offer awards.

Bursaries range from 30% to 100% of fees. Most bursaries at NHSG are for 100% and in addition cover the cost of uniforms, lunches, travel and compulsory academic trips.

To assess who is eligible for a bursary, we consider a range of objective criteria including the income and capital resources of the families applying. It is anticipated that bursary awards will last for the duration of the pupil’s time at school.

We re-assess every year to take account of significant changes in family income and circumstances.

A bursary may go up or down to reflect these. This ensures those most in need receive our support. Financial assessment is carried out by the Girls’ Day School Trust.

Bursary applicants for NHSG come from across the North East:

For many years as a headteacher, it was my privilege to watch the progress of my pupils and to share their pleasure in their achievements. It was particularly satisfying to know that those girls to whom bursaries had been awarded were, with the School’s encouragement, reaching their full potential both academically and as members of our school community.

As a school, we felt the benefit of their contribution, their experiences, their ideas. It was a fresh look at the school through their eyes. That is the true value of the bursary system.

At the age of eleven I too was awarded a bursary, to a small private school, where I remained until I left for university. There I met people from widely differing backgrounds, some of whom are still

my friends, – I had access to music, drama, sport. The teaching was excellent, and I was given guidance on my further education, which, looking back, was invaluable.

I am full of admiration for Newcastle High School for Girls and for its excellent bursary scheme. I am proud to be linked to it in however small a way.

As a donor, a recipient and as a former GDST employee, I feel qualified to say:

“Please consider making a gift to the bursary fund, you could change a life.”

A note from our philanthropy manager Polly De Giorgi

Every day I see girls in receipt of a bursary award thriving here at NHSG. I see them growing in confidence, making friends and finding themselves. As a school, we encourage our pupils to be the best versions of themselves and I think that is what makes us so special – every girl is noticed and appreciated for who she is as an individual. It is also what makes us so successful at welcoming girls from all different walks of life.

I received a bursary and to be honest, at the time, I don’t think I realised the enormity of the opportunity I was given until much later in my life. On reflection, I wouldn’t have done half of the things I have without that start in life. ‘It gave me guts’ is, I think, the best way to describe it – a solid belief in my capabilities and a lifelong desire to pursue adventure and to find adventure in even the small things.

My school was a relatively small boarding school in Scotland and what would have been a very narrow demographic was widened by their bursary scheme, making it a melting pot of different people, experiences and ideas. It opened hearts and minds and developed understanding and tolerance for different opinions and cultures that would not otherwise have formed part of their lives.

My education opened doors to a completely new world for me and it was life-changing. I was very privileged to have the education I did, and it is absolutely the reason I now do what I do. Every day I come to work, I see first-hand the results of my work and I would like to thank both our donors and our bursary recipients for making me want to come to work every day!

Thank you

& an invitation to be part of our future

NHSG and its founding schools have made a remarkable contribution to female education. With your help, we have transformed thousands of lives.

We are enormously grateful for the generosity of the individuals and organisations who have made it possible for us to teach, inspire and enable generations of bright, talented young women whatever their backgrounds.

We are committed to continuing this opportunity. Bursaries do transform lives and can have a lasting impact on social mobility and outcomes. To the individuals that receive them, bursaries offer a life changing opportunity; to the School community, our bursary holders bring different life experiences, perspectives and ideas.

Our campaign mission is to open doors, hearts and minds. A NHSG education offers access to an education founded on excellence, integrity, opportunity, individuality, family and community which makes a brighter future for everyone.

If you believe in the importance of girls’ education like we do, then please consider making a gift to secure bursary places for future generations.

Making A Gift

Donations at all levels will help us to achieve our aim to reach as many girls as possible. Donations can be spread across a number of years and as the GDST is a registered charity, Gift Aid can be claimed, thereby increasing the value of eligible donations at no cost to the individual giving. There are additional benefits available for donations given by higher rate taxpayers.

100% of the donations made to our Bursary Fund will support pupils at Newcastle High School for Girls, as all administration costs are covered by the School and the Girls’ Day School Trust.

Gifts can be used now to support a pupil and we would be very happy to discuss creating a bursary in you or your family’s name.

Making a gift of shares or investments is a simple, tax-efficient way to support our bursary fund. You won’t

have to pay any capital gains tax on the shares you donate, and you may be able to claim income tax relief too.

The cost of a bursary £120,000 will fund a girl through the full seven years of Senior School including travel, uniform, curriculumbased trips and activities so that she can make the most of school life.

£34,000 will fund a Sixth Form education for an ambitious pupil, including careers support and access to the GDST Alumnae network of over 70,000 women working in industries globally.

£17,000 will pay for one year’s fees and costs for a bright, determined girl to study at NHSG.
