A Different Direction

Nikki’s Note

Summer is here. There’s no denying it. I know because my child wore a tank top and shorts to school yesterday. And usually, she is the one always hiding underneath her sweatshirt...! As a new season in the calendar approaches, it may be time for a new season in MY life as well. As I have talked about often, I have spent a lot of my time this last year in the school and in the classrooms. I was surprised/fortunate/blessed (take your pick, I had so many emotions!) to be asked to teach a journaling enrichment class this year for 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. It was amazing. I loved every second of it. It stretched me, it was challenging and it took me out of my comfort zone many times; but it was also in those same moments that made me wonder if this is what God has been preparing me for. I’ve felt it heavy on my heart the last couple of years that I am supposed to be in the schools in some form or another.

Because of this, I feel this would be an appropriate time to pass Kid Connect along to someone to take over. I don’t want to just quit Kid Connect and have it disappear. I know many of you enjoy it and look forward to it and use it as a resource for your family. And I LOVE that! So this summer, I am devoting myself to finding the right person to take over Kid Connect. Someone who can put the time and effort into it that it needs and can continue bringing this resource to you. If you or someone you know would be interested in this, please contact me. I need someone who loves the magazine and has the passion to continue it on and make it even better! And remember, I did not have any graphic design background when I started, so that is not necessarily a requirement! Blessings to you all this summer. Have a great one!

Dads Just Want to Have Fun! 33 Unforgettable Father’s Day Outings

by Christina Katz Before you start preparing that traditional breakfast in bed for dad on Father’s Day, consider some of these outings first. If dad is itching for an adventure this year, why not try one or even a few of these family activities? And don’t forget to snap photos of everyone enjoying dad’s special day because this is going to be his best Father’s Day yet.

1. High Score Dad Whether dad likes vintage

video games like Pac Man and Space Invaders or prefers a few rounds of Skee Ball and pinball, a trip to the arcade is a sure-fire way to light up the day.

2. Soaring Dad

Remember the song, “Let’s Go Fly A Kite” from the Disney film Mary Poppins? Stop at the store on your way to the best kite-flying park in town and you’ve got a great impromptu Dad’s day excursion.

3. Slip And Slide Dad

If you are fortunate enough to live near a water park, you’ve got a whole day of splashing-good fun ahead of you. Arrive early to beat the long lines.

4. Root, Root, Rooting Dad Take dad out to the ball game, take him out with the crowd. Buy

him some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and he will smile all day while he cheers for the home team.

5. 3-D Dad Surprise dad with the 3D or Imax

movie he’s most excited to see this summer. Or head for the nearest drive-in movie theater. There are 338 locations left in the US and you can find them listed online by state.

6. Rappelling Dad Does dad love an intense

challenge? If so, rock climbing at your local climbing center is a great idea. Be sure to make reservations in advance.

7. Biscuits & Gravy Dad Let’s face it, one

of the best places to go on Father’s Day is out to brunch. Hit dad’s favorite greasy spoon or surprise dad with a new-to-him restaurant you think he’ll love. Reservations are a good idea.

8. Angler Dad If dad loves fishing, don’t try to worm your way out of it. Dig him up some worms on Saturday or buy some at your local pet store. Then haul out or borrow the gear, and off to the nearest body of water you all go!

ily. You can always rent bikes for the day or borrow bikes from your neighbors for a whole family ride. Stay hydrated and bring snacks.

15. Putting Dad For some dads, there is no

9. Tomahawking Dad Some dads love nothing

greater joy than sharing a love of golf. If kids are young, mini-golf is a great option. When they get older, try the driving range, and eventually, the whole eighteen holes.

10. History Buff Dad Is a historic destination

For dads with tweens and teens, an afternoon at the paintball park can be thrilling, not to mention colorful. Just remember the wear safety gear.

more than a nice long game of Frisbee. So surprise him with a new disc to add to his collection and then head to the nearest Frisbee golf course. Check online for the location closest to you.

or re-enactment event within driving distance? If so, pile everyone in the car and travel back in time together.

11. River Rat Dad

Some dads are just water-lovers. If your dad is one of them, he’ll probably love of a day of kayaking, rafting or tubing. Be sure to wear a helmet when necessary.

12. Lip-smacking Dad Barbeques are

great, but today is dad’s special day and he’d probably like to be waited on rather than cook. So what’s it going to be: steak, BBQ, pasta? Go ahead and indulge dad with a fancy dinner on his special day.

13. Place Your Bet Dad

Naturally you don’t want dad blowing his paycheck at the track every month. But since he’d never do that, a trip to the horse races with the whole family to place fivedollar bets and cheer your head off makes for a memorable day.

14. Breaking Away Dad

You don’t have to own enough bikes for everyone in the whole fam-

16. Paint-splattered Dad

17. Sunscreen Dad

Even if dad doesn’t surf or even Boogie board, he may still long for a relaxing day at the beach. If visiting the coast is not an option, how about a lake or riverfront. Dads and water do mix!

18. Education-junkie Dad Have you noticed the

proliferation of local classes in your community? Why not sign the whole family up for a class you can take together? Search for “family learning” + your location and see what sounds intriguing.

19. Cowboy Dad If your dad loves the movie

City Slickers, maybe it’s time for that family trail ride. Wear jeans and sturdy shoes and get ready to sweet talk your ride.

20. Bouncing Dad Even though he might not

be prepared to do flips, dad might be up for an afternoon at the local trampoline park. Jumping is fun and relaxing. Call ahead to discover the leastcrowded times.

21. Bull’s Eye Dad Does your local sporting

goods store have an archery gallery? If not, find an archery store in your area and head on over for a few pointers before purchasing a bow and arrow set to use in your yard.

22. Tire-screeching Dad

Even though kids may not be old enough to drive, they can have fun racing dad at the nearest Go Kart destination. Search for both indoor and outdoor options and then rev ‘em up!

23. Everybody Now Dad Outdoor concert

opportunities abound in the summertime! Grab tickets ahead to attend a traditional concert. Be sure to choose a singer or group that will get dad grooving.

24. Stomping Dad Looking for a last-minute

adventure for Father’s Day that won’t break the bank? Hiking is perfect. You can either do a short afternoon hike or take more time preparing for an all-day excursion. Whichever dad prefers.

25. Puddle Of Dad Do you have a day spa or a

local massage center near home? If so, sign dad up for some treatments. If the place is family-friendly, everyone can join in. Otherwise, grab a bite while dad gets spoiled.

thumb, why not take a garden tour for Father’s Day? Or take dad to the biggest nursery in your area to select plants for the season.

30. Strike-loving Dad

Of course, dad doesn’t need to use the bumpers, but younger kids can. This means even young children can enjoy an afternoon or evening of bowling with dad.

31. Round And Round Dad For many dads the amusement park is a family favorite. How many times can you go on each ride before the park closes? You’ll have fun finding out.

32. Browsing Dad

If dad is the thoughtful type, his idea of the perfect adventure might be a literary roam through the stacks of your largest local bookstore. Give him a gift card and let him browse, while everyone else hangs out in their favorite section.

33. Up, Up And Away Dad

If you are looking for an unforgettable Father’s Day experience, consider taking the family up in a hot air balloon. Of course, this adventure is weather-sensitive, so be schedule-flexible for the safest experience.

26. Top Down Dad

How convenient, vintage car shows often fall on Father’s Day. If dad is a car buff, plan a day trip to a show in your region. Wash dad’s car before you go.

27. Helping Hands Dad If dad loves to vol-

unteer, why not pitch in as a family on Father’s Day? Charities often need more support during the non-holiday months. Contact your favorite for ways your family can contribute.

28. Roadrunner Dad

Lace up those sneakers and get ready to pound some pavement with dad. Families who run together can work their way up from short races to long over the years.

29. Down To Earth Dad If dad has a green 8

What Kids Really Want to do During Summer... by Nikki Cox

I had the pleasure of hanging out with an amazing second grade class at Vale Elementary in Cashmere a few weeks ago. We talked about summer and I asked them what they were looking forward to the most to do during summer and the responses I got were not what I would have imagined. The overwhelming response of their number one activity was something to do with water. Mostly swimming, but there were also water balloons, running through sprinklers, etc. Other responses included eating popscicles and ice cream, playing outside, playing with friends, playing catch, going to the park. It got me thinking about how best to lay out my kids’ summer schedule and what to plan for them. I have a friend who is amazing at making a summer bucket list and actually getting things crossed off. Then I have another friend who plans fun new outings nearly every day!

This year, instead of trying to make it the “best summer ever” by doing extravagant things, I will share my tips for a simple, yet fun and memorable summer

Camp section can be quite overwhelming, but if you know the type of camp he/she’d like to do, you can browse a whole lot easier.

Summer Camps

Vacation

I think back to last year and remember the lesson I learned. If my kids are going to go to a camp, then I would prefer that camp to be towards the end of summer! Last summer, I did it the opposite way and in the end, they had nothing to really look forward to at the end of the summer. Besides, I can’t be the only one who gets a bit tired of my kids during the last third of summer, right!?! So if they are dying to go to a camp, go ahead and let them choose one that is in mid-late August and it will be better for all of you! The Summer

10

www.ncwkidconnect.com

Out of 25 kiddos, only one student put “go on vacation” on his most loved summer events. So maybe this will be the year that you skip a vacation all together. If you DO want to go somewhere, even just a long weekend, there are plenty of places close by that are lovely! Stay close and the challenges will be minimal!

Water!

Water play is so simple! And this is what the kids chose the most! Here are some ideas of what you can do with water:

Bunch O Balloons Squirt gun fights Slip and Slide Water balloons a pool Sprinklers a hose Visit all the area public pools Float the river Walk down to the river and skip rocks Bring a friend to the pool with you Make a water blog Visit the local wading pools and/ or splash pad Sidewalk painting with water

Stay away from Pinterest!

As hard as it can be, Pinterest can be really hard to be on during the summer! Distract yourself so you won’t be disappointed. You don’t need to

be extravagant and this would be a great time to show off the creative part of your brain and let your kids know that you really DO have good ideas!!

Let Your Kids be Bored It’s okay for your kiddos to say “I’m bored”! We are parents. We are not personal entertainers! It’s good for your kids to be forced to be creative, and resourceful.

Keep the Routine

Don’t throw the routine out the window just because it’s

summer. Kids crave routine and a schedule. Be flexible, but maybe have some consistencies throughout the day such as eating times, quiet times, chores, etc. And much like in school, how they go to library once and week, and to PE once a week, etc. Go to a different park for your PE days. Plan a trip to the library every Thursday, or a special outing every Friday.

break from school. Sometimes I think we, as parents, plan a lot of these things for our kids because we never did them ourselves as kids. But that’s okay. They will eventually be able to do all those things on their own and you will be crying because the time when by too fast and they are truly only little for such a short period of time!

Regardless of what you do this summer with your kids (or rather what you don’t do!), they will still have a memorable

For The Love of Lemonade!

Easy Variations on a Thirst-Quenching Favorite! By Christina Katz What better time to celebrate the lovely lemon than during the dog days of summer? Lemons have a long history as a crucial superfood that provides multiple health benefits. So you can feel great about every glass of fresh lemonade you sip this summer. Each tall, cool drink is chock full of calcium, potassium, and vitamin C. No wonder lemonade always tastes so delicious and refreshing, especially once the temperature rises and staying hydrated becomes a priority. But these lemonade variations are not merely practical. Each recipe is also a tiny party in every glass. So if you are entertaining this summer or you just need a happy pick-me-up at the end of a steamy day, get in the habit of buying your lemons by the bag and look no further than the fruit and herbs you have on hand. These lemonade recipes always look and taste terrific.

Basic L emonade S y ru p

Syrup will stay fresh in your fridge for several weeks if kept in an airtight container. 10 organic lemons, unwaxed 2 cups of sugar 1½ cups of cold water Zest all the lemons and then juice them so you have about 1½ cups of liquid. Place all the zest, lemon juice, sugar and water in a saucepan and heat over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. But take care not to boil. Strain the syrup into an airtight container and let cool. Discard zest and seeds. Cover and refrigerate syrup for several weeks. You will have about four cups of syrup, which will make 16 glasses of lemonade. To prepare lemonade, mix a ¼ cup of syrup with ¾ cup of water and serve over ice. Garnish with lemon slices if desired. Keep reading for more lemonade variations! -->

June/July 2017

13

B erry L emonade Mash or blend ripe strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or any other type of berry you prefer. Add honey to sweeten, if sour, and mix. Spoon berry mixture into ice cube trays. Pop out cubes as needed and allow them to thaw in the bottom of a pitcher or glass. Unused frozen berry cubes can be removed and kept in a freezer bag, where they should last all summer. When ready to serve, top thawed berry cubes with ice cubes. Add lemonade, lemon slices, and a sturdy straw for stirring.

Wat ermelon O r Peach L emonade Use the same technique as Berry Lemonade but don’t add honey to mashed watermelon. Keep watermelon cubes in a separate freezer bag so you can mix up flavors as the dog days progress. Works just as well with fresh peaches.

C herry L imeade Follow recipe for lemon syrup but substitute organic limes. Increase the number of limes to 12 and reduce the sugar to 1½ cups. Otherwise follow the recipe as directed. Mix ¼ cup of syrup with ¾ cup of soda water. Add two maraschino cherries with a splash or two of cherry juice in each glass. Garnish with lime slices if desired. Sweetness of limes may vary. If limeade is not sweet enough, increase sugar in syrup recipe next time.

14

www.ncwkidconnect.com

Slushy L emonade Put four ice cubes per serving into blender. Pour in one quarter as much Basic Lemonade Syrup as you have ice for a thick slushy. If you desire a thinner consistency add as much water as syrup. Blend on high until smooth. Substitute berry or watermelon cubes for ice cubes as desired. Pour into short glasses and serve with a straw or long spoon. This approach works just as well with limeade.

A rnold Palmer

Add ice to glasses and fill halfway with fresh lemonade and halfway with sun tea made from black tea. Adjust proportions to suit tastes. Garnish with lemon slices or serve over peach ice cubes. To make sun tea, remove tags and strings from 10-12 regular size black tea bags. Add tea bags to a gallon of water in a glass container and place in direct sunlight for four hours. Remove tea bags and chill tea. Stays fresh for two days when refrigerated. Red Rose or your store’s generic tea bags work well and typically cost less than packaged sun tea bags.

For The Love Of Lemons

Ready for seconds? Why not? This is not medical advice, but lemon juice has long been rumored to help alleviate: Acne Anemia Arthritis Asthma Cancer Canker/cold sores Common cold Constipation

Digestive problems Fever Flu Halitosis Hypertension Indigestion Insomnia Kidney stones Nose bleeds Malaria Obesity Rheumatism Sore throat Stroke

Fresh Herbs That Compliment

Lemonade & Limeade: Mint Thyme Rosemary Basil Lavender (culinary variety) For a beautiful presentation, freeze sprigs of herbs into your ice cubes as well as using fresh sprigs for garnish.

9Tips

to Make Relocation Easier on Your Kids by Christa Melnyk Hines Moving a family is stressful and if the relocation comes with another emotional event like a death in the family, divorce or job loss, the transition hardly feels like a party. While it probably won’t be immediately obvious, with careful planning and generous discussion, your child can benefit from a move. According to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), “With the proper attention from parents and professional help if necessary, moving can be a positive growth experience for children, leading to increased self confidence and interpersonal skills.” Here’s how to ease the transition for your children.

1) Discuss the move as soon as possible.

2) Say your good-byes.

•Stay positive, explaining why relocation is necessary.

•A week or two before you move, throw a farewell party to give you and your family an opportunity to officially bid friends and neighbors adieu, exchange contact information and take pictures. Keep refreshments simple, like delivery pizza or sandwiches and refreshments.

•Discuss the perks of your new home’s location. •Help your child learn about the area with resources like maps, photographs and the daily newspaper.

16

www.ncwkidconnect.com

•Peer groups are especially important the older your child. Host a slumber party for your child to say good-bye to close friends. Provide a keepsake pillow case for your child’s friends to doodle and autograph with fabric markers.

•Create a memory book for your kids or provide them with a few craft supplies to make their own. They could include pictures of their friends and memorable outings. Ask their friends, teachers, coaches, and other people they’ll miss to sign it.

3) Revisit favorite haunts. •Whether a park, zoo or local eatery, take time to honor the places your family enjoyed most. •Together make a list of your family’s favorite hot spots you each want to visit before departure day. •Make a video journal or a photo book documenting the outings.

4) Coordinate moving day. •Ask the movers to load your children’s rooms last so their things come off the truck first at your new home. •Consider hiring a sitter or enlisting a family friend to watch your kids while working with the movers. •Unpack your children’s rooms first which can help ease initial anxieties by surrounding them with their personal and familiar belongings.

5) Celebrate a new chapter. •On the first night in your new house, organize a “Family Fun Night” with pizza and games to celebrate a new beginning together. •Invite your child to help make choices about his new room’s decor. •Return to the comfort of old routines like regular meal times and naps as soon as possible.

6) Use technology...with boundaries. •Help your child use technology like Skype or Facebook’s video app to stay in touch with old friends and extended family. •Keep extended family and close friends updated on how your family is settling in via email or a private blog. •Discourage older children from spending too much time on social networking sites. Seeing their friends returning to life without them can be painful and reinforce a sense of loneliness.

Additional Resources: A transition can take at least six months. If your child isn’t adjusting well and exhibits signs of depression, consult your pediatrician. Signs include changes in appetite, social withdrawal, a drop in grades, irritability, sleep problems or changes in mood/behavior.

7) Get acquainted. •Take walks around your new neighborhood. The exercise and fresh air will help relieve stress and familiarize you and your children with your new surroundings. •Play outside on nice days. Chances are you and your kids will meet a few neighbors. •After settling in, invite a few neighbors over for a potluck barbecue.

8) Prepare your child for a new school. •Before the first day, make an appointment for you and your child to tour his new school and meet his teacher.

18

www.ncwkidconnect.com

•Shop for required school supplies and go over the school day schedule, including pick-up and drop-off procedures with your child. •If possible, connect your child with other children her age in the neighborhood or through an extracurricular activity before school starts. A few familiar faces can help ease the transition to a new school.

9) Integrate into your new community. •Volunteer in your neighborhood, your child’s school/daycare, your church or other community organizations. •Check with your library, your child’s preschool/ daycare, your church or online to find parenting support networks in your area that fit your personality, needs and parenting philosophy. •Devote at least one weekend day each month for your family to explore and discover a new restaurant, museum, park or attraction in your new community.

Meet the Chalmers Kent and Annie Chalmers met at the University of Idaho, where they were both enrolled as music majors. Kent invited Annie to be in a newly formed brass quintet (he played Trumpet and she played French Horn). They were married during Annie’s senior year of college and then moved to Cashmere when Kent got his job as band director the following August. They feel so blessed that Cashmere is the place Kent’s teaching career began and continues to this day. Kent and Annie have now been married for 14 years and have come to absolutely love the town and people of Cashmere. They are both passionate about music education in the Wenatchee Valley. Annie was the band director at Kent’s ‘rival school’, Cascade High School for four years before deciding to be a stay at home mom. For the last eight years, Annie has been able to stay at home with their three kiddos, while working various jobs related to music education. Kent looks forward to having his kids in his band program in the (near!) future.

The proximity to outdoor recreation has been a huge part of their love for the area. The Chalmers enjoy hiking, camping, and mountain biking as a family. Kent also enjoying skiing and fly fishing and Aniie knitting and photography. Their lives can be very busy with the jobs they have, so they try to keep their children’s lives as simple as possible, prioritizing outside play and play time with friends. Their three children, Brooke (8), Oliver (7) and Finn (2) are some of the most kind and caring kiddos you’ll meet! Brooke loves to craft, going on outdoor adventures and playing with friends. She is patient with her two brothers and is such a good helper. Brooke is such a blessing with her kind heart. Oliver enjoys basketball and baseball. He loves to figure out John Williams’ melodies on the piano and he is often found curled up on the couch with a book. Finn loves to be on the go! He has always loved stroller and bike rides. His sweet and friendly personality can light up anyone’s day!

Day by Day Calendar

All finished with DC Dance Recital! Hannah Juchmes, Shaylee McFann, Colton Juchmes and Kaitlyn Juchmes.

Your Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities.

However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. Sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), there will be a few every so often. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 28! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Winter. Happy Planning!

Take 5: Devotional

Form New Habits A Devotional on Trusting God Day by Day by Joyce Meyer Readings for today’s devotional: 2 Corinthians 5:17

God’s Word teaches us that when we receive Christ as our Savior and Lord, He gives us a new nature. He gives us His nature. He also gives us a spirit of discipline and self-control, which is vital in allowing us to choose the ways of our new nature. He gives us a sound mind (see 2 Timothy 1:7), and that means we can think about things properly without being controlled by emotion. The way we once were passes away, and we have all the equipment we need for a brand-new way of behaving. God gives us the ability and offers to help us, but we are not puppets and God will not manipulate us. We must choose spirit over flesh and right over wrong. Our renewed spirits will then control our souls and bodies or, to say it another way, the inner person will control the outer person.

excessive in our actions because we behave emotionally. And after the thing is done and cannot be undone, we regret doing it. But we can choose to form new habits, not doing something just because we feel like it but instead doing what will produce the best result in the end.

We do not have to live in regret. God gives us His Spirit to enable us to make right and wise choices. He urges us, guides and leads us, but we still have to cast the deciding vote. If you have been casting the wrong vote, all you need to do is change your vote. Forming new habits will require making a decision to not do what you feel like doing unless it agrees with God’s will. Trust in Him God wants you to live out of your new nature, not your old one. Every time you put your trust in Him and cast the deciding vote to obey, His Spirit transforms you and makes you more like Him.
