Nikki’s Note What legacy are you leaving?

The time has come. We are about to say goodbye to the year 2016. Does anyone else think this year flew by? I feel like I say that every year. I guess it’s true that the older you get, the quicker time goes. How was your year? Some of you may have had a great year, others may have had a harder year. Despite what 2016 brought you, my favorite part of the New Year is that we get to essentially start fresh. There is always room for improvement, no matter how great a year you may have had.

I like these questions because, really, the answer is always no. You can never love, give, spend time, pray... enough. There is always room for more. These are the things I want to be priority in my life. So, when I reflect back on the year, I like to come up with ways I can do things even more in the new year. What legacy do you want to leave? Are you on track to leaving it? Life is not about checking off items on your bucket list (though that IS fun!). But life should be about leaving a legacy and using your life to make a difference in other people’s lives. What can you do to make a difference in someone’s life this year? It doesn’t have to be dramatic. Maybe it’s mentoring a child. Maybe it’s paying for the car behind you in the drive up. Maybe it’s fervently praying for a friend who does not know the Lord. Maybe it’s volunteering in your child’s school. Or saying hello to a stranger in the supermarket. However, many random acts of kindness you did last year; your goal for this year could be to one-up that number. When we love, and give and pray with all that we have, we are changing the world. No matter how small it may seem to you. So push through, my friend. Leave your legacy. Forget your to-do list and focus on love. You will be truly blessed because of it.

I am not huge on resolutions. I like the idea of them, but I rarely follow through and accomplish them. Instead, I like to ask myself a few key questions and plan to improve that way. For example, some questions I would ask are “Did I love enough?” “Did I give enough?” “Did I pray for others enough?” “Did I spend time with my family enough?” “Did I nurture my friendships enough?”

The Importance of Traditional Play in a Digital World by Sarah Lyons

Play comes naturally to kids. They use it as a way to express their feelings and learn new things. In the age of electronics we live in, video games and television can take over a child’s free time. It is important to be intentional about creating opportunities where children can play freely, use their imaginations, and have fun. Traditional play can provide the following lasting benefits for children:

Social skills and leadership development

Children learn valuable social skills that will help them be successful as they grow. By taking turns, sharing, and interacting with others they are learning how to appropriately respond to others. During play, they are able to practice both their verbal and nonverbal communication skills. They also learn to negotiate when things don’t go as planned. Experimenting with different roles in their family and community as they pretend to play house, school, or store helps them gain insight into the world around them and interpret the feelings of others. (www.education.com)

Motor skills development

Children develop their fine motor skills through play. Using crayons to color a picture helps develop fine motor skills. Other activities that help develop fine motor skills are playing with play-doh,

6

www.ncwkidconnect.com

practicing scissoring, stringing beads, and using lacing cards . Gross motor skills are also developed during play time. Games like tag or hopscotch integrate the large muscle movement which will help children gain balance and spatial relationship to the world . Playing and climbing at the park helps kids learn to use their bodies and provides vital exercise for children. (www.handsonwegrow. com)

Problem solving skills and emotional development

Kids can work through their emotions by simplifying situations through play. This helps them express their feelings and regain control. “Play supports emotional development by providing a way to express and cope with feelings.” (www. education.com) They may act out something that scared them, like a car accident they saw while

driving past. They may also play out something they are not allowed to do and then work through the consequences through play. “Play can be safe outlet to work through situations that cause them anxiety, such as starting school or visiting the doctor. Letting the child take on the roll of the authority figure will help them process how events may unfold.” says Early Childhood Education Educator, Kara Thomas.

Development of imagination

Play builds a child’s imagination. You can help your child with imaginative play by role playing with them. Call them on the pretend phone, ask them to cook you lunch in the play kitchen, or have them use the doctor kit to do a check up on you. Engage them in conversation while you act out these scenarios. Often, you will be surprised at their perceptions. By role playing, they learn to better understand their surroundings and build their imagination. Traditional play time allows kids to work through their emotions in a healthy way and develop important skills. It is vital to provide a child with adequate play time in their day, especially with all the distractions in today’s digital world. The best part is, the kids will be having so much fun, they won’t realize they are learning.

Why Parents Should Play with Their Kids

Kids enjoy playing alone or with other children but nothing quite compares to playing with a parent. Although we may be busy with work or household tasks, taking time to play with our children has lasting benefits.

• Makes the child feel special • Helps you understand your child • Provides quality time together • Creates are one on one time with the child • Keeps you young and active • It’s fun for everyone

A Joyful New Year:

Create A Great Year For Your Family By Focusing On Joys Rather Than Resolutions By Christina Katz

New Year’s resolutions have become heavily commercialized. Messages coming from all directions would have you believe you are falling short as an acceptable human being in a multitude of ways. You are too poor, too unfit, too uneducated, too lonely, too busy, too selfish, too boring. You name it and you need to change it, preferably starting on January 1st. But unless parents are clear that they are enough as they are, you risk passing this annual habit of self-recrimination on to your children and their future children. This year, resist external messages designed to make you and your family feel inadequate and flip New Year’s resolutions on their heads. Resolve to no longer let an annual holiday undermine your family’s sense of wholeness and worth. Resolution comes from the word resolve, meaning to make a decision or determination. This January 1st, why not become determined to resist self-criticism altogether? Take some time over the New Year transition to assess everything you enjoy. Here are a few family discussion topics that will help you focus on building your family up rather than on tearing each other down. Because, of course, when you feel critical of yourself, nit-picking your kids swiftly follows. Instead, start discussing these topics over the holidays and, as the New Year approaches, watch the never-good-enough season transform into the joyful ringing in of the New Year every family craves.

Discuss what was joyful last year. What choices did family members make that brought them joy? Were there some decisions any family members made that created disappointment? You can learn as much from what did not work as you can from what did work, so don’t be afraid to admit to any mistakes you feel you may have made. A balanced year is full of ups and downs.

Affirm each other’s visions. After everyone has shared, family members will feel motivated to help each other. First affirm the validity of each family member’s dream. New Year’s Eve Family Share This New Year’s Eve, go ahead and try to stay up until the ball drops. You don’t have to stay up until midnight unless it makes sense for your family. If you have younger children, why not watch a television broadcast from an earlier time zone? Most likely you can stream the broadcast online, if you can’t find it on television. After dinner, before the New Year arrives, have each family member share a bit of their joy from the previous year. Younger kids may need help, but try to let them gather materials and present on their own as much as possible. Emphasize how well each family member is sharing for someone their age. Notice how younger children’s enthusiasm might give older family members permission to be more effusive. Encourage the whole family to show interest and ask questions so each presenter can make new discoveries about their passions. Here are some ideas for what each presenter might share: • Toast your joys with sparkling juice • Read a favorite book passage aloud • Teach others in the family how to do something you enjoy • Play a favorite video or board game together • Perform a short skit • Prepare a favorite dish or dessert • Sing a song • Make collages of your joys • Do a dance • Show a favorite television or movie trailer • Present artwork • Make a family joy alter with photos and candles or string lights • Take the family on a guided tour using Google maps • Share a video of you and your joy in action • Daydream out loud about future, imagined joys

Nikki’s New Years

Pinterest Picks A Balloon Drop

How to do it: -->Cut a plastic table cloth in half. -->Punch holes along the edge of both halves. -->Overlap the holes and thread a string through the holes to use as your pull cord. -->Hang the table cloth up, leaving some slack for the balloons. -->You can use duct tape or command hooks to attach to ceiling. -->Fill up with balloons. -->Throw some confettii on top on balloons if desired. -->At midnight, pull the rip cord and wait for the squeals! -->Such fun for both kids and adults!

Set Some Goals Sometimes being able to break down “resolutions” into smaller, more specific categories can be easier for kiddos. Take this approach to help your kiddos set some goals for the new year. Get this free printable online here: theteacherbag.com/2015/12/27/new-years-resources-freebie 12

www.ncwkidconnect.com

Memory Jar Not really something you can do this New Years Eve, but this would be a fun tradition to start! Have a jar in a centralized location (maybe even incorporated into your dining room centerpiece, or on your fireplace mantle). Write good things that happen on little pieces of paper throughout the year and place them in tihe jar. These can be accomplished goals, funny moments, milestones hit, kind things done for you, etc. On the next New Year’s Eve, take them out and spend some time reading them together as a family to help you remember the year and reflect on y our blessings.

Hourly Balloon Pop This is a fun activity to do, especially if you are having a party with other kids, or even if you are just staying at home all day with just yourselves. This helps take the “I’m Bored” factor out of the agnonizing waiting that takes place on New Years Eve. Put a slip of paper into each balloon with an activity written on it. It could be playing a board game, making pizzas, making cookies, the first clue on a selfie scavenger hunt, ‘read a book’ (a fun new, New Years book that mom or dad surprisingly pulls out from hiding), etc. Fun games to play during this evening could be Apples to Apples, Left Center Right, Loaded Questions, Pie Face, Speak Out, Heads Up, etc. Most importantly: HAVE FUN! Many families have enjoyed the small mom-andpop shop of the Academic Toolbox. I remember discovering it the first year we moved here. I went in and thought “oh, boy. I could get into a lot of trouble here and leave with way more things than I need and spend way more than I have to spend!” And I did just that. The atmosphere of the store, the love and kindness of the owners, Dwight and Sharon, were addicting. Academic Toolbox has been Wenatchee’s specialty toy store since 1999. They have also been a dream for our teachers in the Valley. Dwight and Sharon Byers go above and beyond for their customers and could direct them to exactly what they needed or were looking for. My husband’s grandpa, along with many grandparents, could go in, tell them the ages of their grandchildren and maybe something about them, and leave the store with the best present that child would receive at his/her birthday. They have a gift, that’s for sure. Pair that gift

with their heart for the community and you have some people amazing people! Through the years, the internet became their nemesis. Then slap on the budget cuts from the schools and their business was quickly being affected. Through much prayer and consideration, and many trials and fails of changing things up at the store, they decided it was ultimately time to close her down. They took the leap of faith and put the building up for sale. And it sold a lot quicker than they had anticipated. “We knew that God could move mountains, but boy, did he move a huge one for us!” says Sharon. They got to work, getting product, racking and fixtures priced to sell. They hand over the keys December 23rd.

Since the announcement of their closure, Sharon says they have been in awe of the generosity of their customers who have come in to shop and express their sadness of the toolbox closing, but also understanding at the same time. “We have so many wonderful memories which we will carry for a lifetime and it is our prayer that the many folks and kids who have shopped with us will have memories of their own.” Sharon says, fighting back tears. *continued on page 16

As a reader on their Facebook page says, “Academic Toolbox will leave a legacy”. As Dwight and Sharon prepare to move forward and close this chapter of their lives, it is greatly apparent that they have left a legacy. They have truly enjoyed all the years at the shop and watching our little ones grow up, but at the same time, they are finding peace in the Lord and trusting in His timing. When I had to tell my kiddos that the Academic Toolbox was closing, it was quite the process of grief. Especially for my oldest daughter, KaeLee, who aspires to be a teacher one day. She loved going into the store and rifling through all the teacher supplies and classroom décor. She likes to imagine how she will set up her classroom and loves to look through the awards and all-things teacher-related to get inspired of what kind of teacher she will be and what her classroom will be like. It is quite the devastation for her. But Sharon told her that her dream can still come true, even without the Toolbox there and whenever she wants to stop in for a hug, Sharon will be ready and waiting. KaeLee beamed and her spirit was lifted. So, thank you, Academic Toolbox, Dwight, Sharon, and all the staff, for your dedication to our Valley. You will be greatly missed. Kid Connect wishes you the best of luck in whatever God has planned for you next! Be sure to stop in at the store while they are still open! Buy some Christmas gifts and say your goodbyes! And don’t forget your free hugs!

Meet the Green Family This is the Green Family. Meet Tyler, Kelli, Cooper and Tate. Tyler and Kelli both grew up in Cashmere and have known each other nearly all of their lives. However, it wasn’t until college when they started dating. Kellie graduated from dental hygiene school in Yakima and Tyler graduated from Eastern Washington University. They got married twelve years ago and moved to Philadelphia while Tyler attended Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry for four more years. After he graduated in 2008, they promptly moved back to Cashmere, where they knew they always wanted to venture back to ‘home’. Afterall, this is where the majority of their extended family was and they wanted to be a part of the close knit community they remembered so well. They were also able to follow another dream of theirs: to start a business in the Valley and begin expanding their family. Tyler is a dentist and owner of Green Dental in Wenatchee and Kellie

is a dental hygienist. Cooper is now seven and Tate is four. They are the light of their parents’ eyes and nothing brings greater joy than watching them grow up in the same community that Tyler and Kellie were so fortunate enough to have grown up in as well. There’s no better place to live, especially when you’ve got family by your side! *The Green Family’s interview is continued on page 18

DYourayGuidebyto FUN Day C alendar in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities.

However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. Sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), there will be a few every so often. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 24! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Winter. Happy Planning!

Plot Synopsis: Apple Valley Community Church has been presenting the same popular Christmas program for more than 40 years, with same lead actors each time. Over time, the production has gotten increasingly elaborate and extreme, as have the lead players’ egos and demands. But because this is a now the premier event for the “who’s who” of the region, no one in the church dares to say anything. Besides, everyone is too busy running the event to question it. But in the midst of the excess, four people serve in the background, quietly helping and cleaning up the mess. And when a very real human need presents itself, these wise people help the entire church see the true meaning of Christmas and the servant Savior it celebrates. But what if this The very word “Christmas” has been emptied of Christmas were better than any Christmas you have its meaning, drug through the gutter, and given back to us, minus its power. “Apple Valley Community Church” keeps making its Christmas program bigger and better every year, and now 40 years later, the production and the actor egos have grown to hilarious excess. But in the midst of the craziness, four people serve in the background, quietly helping and cleaning up the mess. And when a very real human need presents itself, these wise people help the entire church see the true meaning of Christmas and the servant Savior it celebrates.
