Nikki’s Note Those memories are priceless.
When I was pregnant with my second baby, my first baby was four month old. Yup--they are 13 months apart. And if you can believe it (because no one ever can), we planned it that way! When it came time for the ultrasound that reveals the gender, I was so excited and so nervous at the same time. Oh, how I longed to have another girl, so the two of them could be best friends! And imagine my shrieks and squeals when we found out that, indeed, it was another girl! I immediately imagined them sharing a room together, staying up late to whisper their secrets, cuddling up with one another to read each other books and comfort each other on hard days (And of course, later on, putting their heads together to whisper about cute boys and plans to conspire against mom).
Even on days where they may bicker a bit and bother each other, we always remind the older girl that she can always go sleep in her own room. But she never does. She chooses to sleep with her sister no matter the type of day they had. They work it out. Have I mentioned how amazing this is?!?! All my dreams are coming true! So, if you have hopes for your kiddos, no matter how small they may seem, don’t give up. They’ll get there. The bond of sisterhood can never be broken. I am so thankful that this summer they are creating memories that will last a lifetime. Memories that don’t cost hundreds of dollars by sending them to camp or traveling the world. Simple memories of late night giggles and secrets and lots of books. Those memories are priceless.

But for six and a half years, none of that happened. They have always been all about “my space” and needing complete silence in order to sleep. They have tried having “sleepovers” in each others’ rooms, but it never works out. One is talking too much, the other rolls around too much. That one snores. She hogs all the blankets. The list went on. Until the last day of school this year. I still have no idea what happened, but something clicked in them. They have, since the day school got out for the summer, slept in the same room together! It’s amazing! The lay in bed, taking turns reading chapters from their books aloud to each other. They whisper silly stories and make plans for the next day. They are bonding. And it’s amazing.

DIY Summer Camp by Nikki Cox
If you are like me, you put off registering for summer camps for multiple reasons: 1. You just don’t want to think that far ahead. You are busy enough with Spring Sports, end of the school year activities and the like. 2. You don’t want to ask your kids what type of camp they are interested in for summer because they change their mind every three seconds and you don’t want to shift their thinking to summer quite yet; they still have spring testing to focus on. 3. You dread spending hundreds of dollars on camp. and 4. I like to call my planning style “spur of the moment’, but my husband might label it differently (procrastination. But I prefer spur of the moment. Much better, don’t you think?) So when my lack of planning fails me and all the camps are filled up or I just can’t find a camp that is what I want in a price range that I like (you know, free... HA!), I like to get creative and figure out how to host my own summer camps at home. This way, not only do I get to join the fun and learn alongside my kiddos, but it is a great reminder why I don’t homeschool and renews my appreciation for our amazing teachers...! Last year, in the July/August issue, I wrote an article called Finishing Summer Off With a Bang. I encourage you to head to our website, ncwkidconnect.com and look up the archived article for the DIY camps I introduced to you last summer. They included: Art Camp, Science Camp, Photography Camp, and Cooking Camp. This summer, I want to introduce you to a few new ideas and themes that you can easily pull off in your own home. Either for just your kiddos, or you can team up with another family or two and plan it out together. Kids tend to behave better when other adults are present, anyway! (or is that just my kids?!?) In store for you this year are Etiquette Camp, Around the World in a Week, Olympics Week, and Holiday Camp Enjoy! And as you plan, remember this tip: Pinterest is your friend, but not your boss! Put your own spin on things and let the wonderful world of Pinterest be a guide, not a rule.

Etiquette Camp
Around the World in a Week This is a camp I am super excited about! How fun would it be to have a every day in the week be learning about a new culture! You could even do all the continents, combining Antarctica and Australia into one to fit the 5 days.
This is a camp I am implementing in my own house this summer. This idea sprouted after getting tired of my kiddos not being able to handle dinner time without falling out of their chairs, smacking their food, making up songs about poop, burbing and whining. WOW. And these are girls, FYI. So we are spending a week learning about table manners, how to act ‘properly’, how to dress for dinner, where your napkin belongs, appropriate table topics, how to pass food around and how to ask for something and more. We will learn how to set the table and where all the utensils go and what they are for, we will be singing songs about manners, playing games, attempting to walk with books on our head and practicing our skills out in public. For crafts, we will be coloring a placemat that will later be laminated, making a table centerpiece, we will learn how to fold fancy cloth napkins into shapes, and we will make conversation starter questions on popsicle sticks (placed in a mason jar) for polite table topics. We will be ending our week with a fancy high tea party. My girls are actually already looking forward to it so much, they are hosting their own camp ahead of time with their dollies. Ha!
What to do: Learn about the culture, what language they speak (learn a few phrases!), what they wear, the weather in the country, the foods the typically eat, etc. Do crafts that relate to the culture, listen to and dance to their music, play a game or a sport that is typical in that culture, etc. For an example, here is what a day could look like if the culture of the week is South America: Crafts: Make a rain stick, a toucan out of paper plates, a maraca, create an ojo de Dios... so many ideas! Learn: Find it on a map, see how much they know already... language, weather, etc. Activities: Play Futbol (Soccer) Learn some Spanish! Maybe even some jump rope rhymes in Spanish they can jump to. Listen to their music, watch you tube videos of their culture’s dance style and try to mimic it. Dress up in your own interpretation of their style and host a fashion show. Check a book out from the library that they have in both English and Spanish and read them (Elephant and Piggie books are great and come in both!) Eat: make tamales, homemade tortillas, Mexican ice cream, salsa, tacos, and more! Field Trip: Maybe eat lunch out at a Mexican Restaurant.
July/August 2016

olympic Week Since Summer Olympics just happen to be this summer, how fun would it be to have Olympics camp! Learn about Rio, the history of the Olympics, the meaning behind the Olympic Rings, discover the countries being represented, what sports are played, learn a new sport and make your own version you can play at home!
Holiday Camp Why save the fun of the holidays for their actual day? Pick a holiday for each day and have fun with it! Here are some ideas to get you started in your planning! Easter: Dye Eggs... try a few different ways of doing it, have an east egg hunt, make bunny crafts, resurrection rolls, read some bible passages pertaining to Easter week, sing Easter songs, poems and rhymes. Watch a Veggietales Easter video. Make egg shaped snacks and lunch. Christmas: Listen to Christmas music, make ornaments, make Christmas cookies, watch a Christmas movie, make graham cracker gingerbread houses, collect your unused toys and donate them, gather canned food and bring it to a local food bank, volunteer at the lighthouse serving meals (yes-they do this all year!), write a letter to Santa. Thanksgiving: Make Pilgrim Hats and have a feast, put on a play about the first Thanksgiving, read Children’s books about Thanksgiving, make a thankful tree and fill it up things you’re thankful for, make a cornucopia centerpiece, eat Turkey, make pumpkin pie, etc. Halloween: Dress up in costume, or have a costume fashion show, make a haunted house in the bedroom and do a walk-through. Tell or write your own scary ghost stories. Wrap each other in toilet paper and make yourselves into mummies. Cut Pumpkins out of construction paper and paint them with shaving cream. Make pumpkin shaped cookies and muddy buddy mix, etc. Other holiday options for the week could include Valentine’s Day, Fourth of July, New Years, St. Patrick’s Day, or even May Day!

www.ncwkidconnect.com
For crafts, you can make your own torches and have a torch relay, make some form of the Olympic rings, make your own Olympic flag, create a ‘uniform’ by decorating t-shirts, make snacks in the shape of a torch or the rings, read children’s books based on the Olympics, find some Olympic themed worksheet printables... word find, word scrambles, etc., create medals to hang around your necks Activities: Obstacle Course, Balloon Volley, Javelin throw with straws, long jump, a foot race, a water balloon toss, hula hoop competition, jump rope contest, three legged race, etc. Field Trip to SPRORT gymnastics, Bowling alley, or the swimming pool!
The ideas for this camp week are endless!
6 Easy Pre Reading Games for Little Ones
by Sara Marchessault
There’s something really cool about being a parent of a kid between the ages of two and five: change happens quickly. While every child is different, odds are good that most kids have a combination of explosive growth in one or more areas. One day they are waiting for you to hold the bottle and the next they are fighting you for the spoon. Some kids say hardly anything their first two years and then start talking away in complete sentences. As they grow, it often happens that they want to do more on their own and we are dazzled by the capabilities of these small creatures. It’s perfectly natural of us to think that since they just learned to count to 20, in Spanish, know all the shapes, and can name any body part we point to, they are ready for more. Why not teach him or her to read? With the best intentions, we set out to have our little one, maybe at age three or four, start
to practice reading skills in a formal way. We introduce them to letters, sounds, and even sight words. At first kids pick up quickly because the ABC song is one they’ve heard their whole life and if they can connect what they are being asked to identify to the song, then it all makes sense. If it works, great! But, what about the times it might not work? What about the kids that push back, that resist sitting still for formal instruction? It does not mean they won’t read. Or that they aren’t capable. It does mean that maybe they aren’t ready for the formal structure of reading. The good news is that there are simple ways to get your kid excited about reading and practicing skills that do not require you to sit down and provide formal instruction. These activities are fun for parents and kids and extremely helpful for all of the reading teachers in the not-so-distant future.

Beef up your alphabet song. Most kids know the basic ABC song from a very young age. Learning the song comes first, then identifying letters, and eventually letter sounds. Adding those letter sounds is how you beef up your ABC song. One example is to start each verse with a word that starts with a particular letter, say the sound, and then the letter name, doing each of these twice. The format for the letter A might be: Apple. Apple. Short a sound. Short a sound. A. A. “Apple, apple, ă, ă, A.” Then “Baby, baby, /b/, /b/, B.” Choose whatever tune you want or make up your own. Organizing your alphabet sound song by theme is fun too. My kids have enjoyed a version where each letter is a food item or name of someone we know. Singing this helps commit it to memory and it’s easy to do in the car or at home.
Rhyme game. Rhymes are a popular way to introduce kids to word families and phoneme chunks. When starting out, model rhyming words by stating them in pairs. “Cat-rat.” Bat-sat.” Kids might catch on quickly and make up their own rhymes, or they might just listen and process, saving what they hear to apply at a later time. When they start to make their own rhymes, be careful not to dismiss silly sounding words. It’s tempting to correct them, but they are just getting the hang of word sounds and that some words sound like others. If you say “what rhymes with fish?” and the response is “smish” just have a good laugh about it and point out that their word does have the same ending sound. For some real fun ask them what smish means. Writing practice. Lots and lots of pre-writing practice. Paper, pencils, markers, dry erase boards, chalk on the driveway, paint, etc. If you can write with it, and you can stand the mess it may make, let your little one scribble to his heart’s content. Fill those pages with ink and paint and talk about letters while the writing is happening. Every scrap of paper with scribble and blobs of paint is practice for writing skills down the road. And when you talk about letters and sounds while writing, your child is soaking it all in to apply to more formal instruction that is coming down the road.

Spelling. Starting with their name, encourage them to start thinking about how spelling works. Try spelling names out loud. If you are writing a grocery list, or addressing a letter and your little one is in the room, spell a few words aloud so they can hear you break the word into letters. Spell the names of items on the dinner table, noticing the beginning, ending, and middle sounds. When they are really into a toy or character casually ask what letter is the first sound in the name. You can always ask, with a fun lilt to your voice, “hmmm…. how do you spell popsicle?” Encourage them to listen to the word and talk about what sounds they hear. Encourage unique spelling. Students I’ve taught to read and my own children enjoyed playing a game where they put random letters together and ask me to “spell it.” What they really meant was read it, or tell them what word they just spelled. This game usually ends in hilarity. Kids will say things like “j-m-e-p-t.” When parents sound it into a word and try to pronounce it, expect lots of giggling.
Reading with a twist. Read with your kids as often as possible. This is an old adage that we have heard repeatedly. The twist is for you, the reader, to leave out words and encouraging your little one to fill them in. Start with a story you have read over and over and just leave off the word at the end of the sentence. “I do not like green eggs and ____. I do not like them Sam I __.” Give her a little nudge if she needs it, or ask her to read with you. For an added bonus, put your finger on the page under the words so she can start to make the connection that each word stands on its own.

Jake and Mallory moved to the Valley (Cashmere) three years ago to open up their practice, Abundant Life Chiropractic. They have two kids, Kayson (4) and Kinsley (1). Jake and Mallory were both raised in small towns outside Spokane. They met in high school at the county fair dance and have been together ever since! They both went to Eastern Washington University where Jake played football and Mallory played volleyball. After completion, they got married and moved to Iowa for graduate school then went on to Georgia for Jake’s preceptorship (residency). Mallory retired early from teaching 5th grade to stay at home with the kids and help run the office. Jake loves meeting and helping lots of people through Chiropractic! They are currently active in their church and enjoy doing service projects for local non-profits through Abundant Life Chiropractic. Kayson just turned four and is all boy! He loves tractors, dirt, sports and making his mamma nervous! He is currently working on learning English letters and sounds all while his Dad is trying to teach him Spanish! Kinsley can almost hang with her big brother. She just turned one and is trying to go straight from crawling to running! She is an awesome baby, loves to sing and play, but to her mom’s dismay - still hasn’t managed to sleep through the night! Jake and Mallory are super grateful to have two happy, healthy kiddos with big personalities!

What’s left on your bucket list? Mom: I would love to RV around Alaska! Dad: Exploring the world. I would love to travel around Europe and the South Pacific. Before I had kids, I never thought I’d: Mom: Love so deeply or have such an unconditional love. Dad: Love another person so much.
What is the best advice you have received regarding parenting? Mom: Sometimes you have to throw the book out the window and go with your mommy heart and instincts. Dad: Parent with relationship in mind, not obedience or my personal reputation in mind. The goal being our kids would want to come home when they longer have to. -Andy Stanley
What would you do with the money if you won the lottery? Mom: Have someone else manage it! I would love to buy a large rand or resort and have a place where people who are terminally ill or chronically ill could go for free and have a nice, relaxing vacation with their loved ones. Dad: First we would tithe, then not do anything for 6 months, restrain my wife from spending.... but having an airplane and piolet would be awesome!
What one thing would you change if you had to do it over? Mom: Slow down... enjoy ALL my moments. I wish I would have done a couple of long-term mission trips before kids... maybe we can do that when they are all grown up! Dad: Learning Spanish fluently when I was younger. That would have made things easier.

Would you rather camp in an RV or stay in a tent? Mom: RV with kiddos…Tent without Dad: TENT! Or build your own shelter, gather your own food… How do you take your coffee? Mom: Cream AND (too much) sugar! Dad: Freshly ground, black, with some raw sugar. What apps do you use the most? Mom: Pandora, FB, Bible App Dad: Twitter, Facebook, Bible App, ESPN, Starbucks, Pandora Favorite family hang-out in the Valley: Mom: Cashmere Pump Track Dad: Pybus Our go-to place to eat: Mom: McGlinns or Milepost 111 Dad: McGlinns or Watershed
Where do you most want to travel, but have never been? Mom: The South Pacific or the Mediterranean. Dad: I would say somewhere in the South Pacific, like Fiji. What has been your biggest challenge/obstacle to overcome? Mom: I would say moving away from friends and family. However, that being said, we have gained and made a lot of great relationships along the way! Dad: Probably moving around the country for school and starting an office from scratch.
at Lake Roosevelt. Dad: Going to explore where we live, spend some time in Chelan!
If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? Mom: I would love the pioneer/ homesteading days, however, my husband thinks I wouldn’t last a second and that I’m naive. Dad: Probably the mid-1990’s--the music was so much better! Do prefer nights out or an evening in? Mom: If I have a clean house (never?) then I love cozy nights in, but going out for dinner is always a win! Dad: Probably depends on the day, but I would lean towards nights out. Do you have any summer plans in the works yet? Mom: Hanging out in the area, spending some time with our families
Our favorite thing about living here is: Mom: I love the culture of the valley – people are seriously awesome here! It’s a smaller town, but with a lot of great amenities! Dad: Amazing people, & everywhere you look, it’s absolutely beautiful! My favorite thing about Jake is: Mom: He is the most genuinely kind and non-judgmental person I’ve ever met, an amazing husband, dad and doctor. He is humble, hard-working and loves the Lord. He has his priorities straight and is focused on fulfilling God’s purpose for his life all while encouraging us to do the same. My favorite thing about Mallory is: Dad: She does more than anyone I know and does it with love, grace and excellence. She is beautiful, selfless, generous, an amazing mom…I could go on and on.

DYour ay by Day Calendar Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities. However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. Sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), there will be a few every so often. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 44! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Summer. Happy Planning! Ava during Aviation Day at Pangborn!

Take 5: Devotional The Pocket Prayer The Power of a simple prayer.
by Max Lucado YouVersion Bible App
We aren’t the first to struggle with prayer. The sign-up sheet for Prayer 101 contains some familiar names: the apostles John, James, Andrew, and Peter. When one of Jesus’ disciples requested, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1 NIV), none of the others objected. No one walked away saying, “Hey, I have prayer figured out.” The first followers of Jesus needed prayer guidance. Maybe you do too. When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he gave them a prayer. Not a lecture on prayer. Not the doctrine of prayer. He gave them a quotable, repeatable, portable prayer (Luke 11:1–4). Could you use the same? It seems to me that the prayers of the Bible can be distilled into one. The result is a simple, easy-to-remember, pocket-size prayer: Father, you are good. I need help. Heal me and forgive me. They need help. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, amen. Let this prayer punctuate your day. As you begin your morning, Father, you are good. As you commute to work or walk the hallways at school, I need help. As you wait in the grocery line, They need help. Keep this prayer in your pocket as you pass through the day. Prayer, for most of us, is not a matter of a month-long retreat or even an hour of meditation. Prayer is conversation with God while driving to work or awaiting an appointment or before interacting with a client. Prayer can be the internal voice that directs the external action. This much is sure: God will teach you to pray. Don’t think for a minute that he is glaring at you from a distance with crossed arms and a scowl, waiting for you to get your prayer life together. Just the opposite. Prayer is not a privilege for the pious, not the art of a chosen few. Prayer is simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. My friend, he wants to talk with you. Even now, as you read these words, he taps at the door. Open it. Welcome him in. Let the conversation begin.
**This is day 1 of a five day reading plan in the YouVersion Bible App. Download the app today and continue this “Power of a Simple Prayer” devotion. Five minutes a day in the bible can change your life. Are you in?** 66
