Nikki’s Note
I know I talk about Fall every year once I get to this issue. But seriously, can we ever really talk about Fall too much? I mean, it’s really just Heaven-on-earth, is what Fall is, y’all! Everyone has their own favorite things about fall, but here’s mine! (and it’s important to note that you will see nothing with the words “pumpkin spice”... blech.)
These are just a few of my favorites. Ah, Fall. I’m so glad you’re back!

• School is back in session and I can have some breathing room. • The weather has calmed and I can wear my favorite outfits of jeans, flip-flops, a t-shirt and the occasional open-front cardigan. • I can stop shaving my legs. I’m down to just my ankles (because I truly do live in flip-flops until the snow becomes too deep and my toes get frost bite!) • The leaves are changing colors! Eeeeekkk!! • Football. I may not be a die-hard Seahawks fan. But I am a fan, and it gives me great joy knowing it’s football season again. I love seeing fans unite for a purpose! • T.V. Yup, all of favorites come back. Oh, how I’ve missed my Ellen, Grey’s Anatomy, Modern Family, Survivor and more! And have you seen the new show ‘This is Us’? If not, you must! • Hot Apple Cider. • The smell of the crisp air. • The shorter days. You know, when you can send your kids to bed even earlier without them arguing, since it’s already dark out! • Boots. Sweaters. Scarves. Fleece leggings. Layers. While I do not wear these things because I would sweat to death, I thoroughly enjoy seeing others in their cute outfits and great fashion taste. • Thanksgiving. Quite possibly my favorite holiday. I’m not a huge turkey fan, but I do love the sentiment of the holiday. Everyone is always more pleasant! • The decor. The colors, the pumpkins, the corn stalks, the hay bales. the colorful leaves. I love it all. • Going for walks. Walking in zig zags so you can crunch all the leaves on your way.

Thanks

Thanksgiving is an easy holiday to fall in love with. There is often a delicious meal with all the fixings. Travel to see people we love. And we get to focus on gratitude to open up the holiday season. Thanksgiving is an opportunity for meaningful quality time with loved ones, and one popular Thanksgiving activity is to share with our loved ones and dinner guests something for which we are thankful. Sharing what we are thankful for can be a fun tradition that helps us connect and bond with the people who are most important to us. This year, you can foster those connections even more by spicing up the way you express your gratitude. Here are four twists on the practice of giving thanks that will get your family talking and might even keep the kids busy while you’re cooking.
Use the kids. Invite them to use what technology they have available to them to make a slideshow or video they can share with your dinner guests. They could make videos of what they are thankful for with a narrative component. Another option is to interview different family members asking questions about gratitude, favorite Thanksgiving memories, or even just asking what their life is like in November of 2015. This can keep kids busy, happy, and out of the kitchen, and in the end, they will have created something to keep and share for years to come.
Make a gratitude wall or bulletin board. Choose an area of prominence in the house and leave sticky notes and pens close by. Invite family members to write down what they are grateful for so that it can be shared throughout the day. You can read them aloud later, or not, whatever feels right for you and your family. But definitely remember to take a photo. You might do it again next year and want to keep a record of the cool boards you create.
3-way thanks. If your family’s Thanksgiving tradition is to share aloud what you’re grateful for, consider a new approach on an old favorite. 3-way thanks invite’s each member of your Thanksgiving party to share three pieces of information: one object they are thankful to have, one person they are thankful to know, and one experience or event that happened in the last 24 hours for which they are thankful. As each person shares, it’s sure to inspire conversations to unfold. Keep a Thanksgiving journal. If you are the writer or diarist in your family, this might be the role for you. Or you can assign this to a child with an interest in record keeping. Have a journal available for family members to write a gratitude entry. You can also leave it more general and invite them to write about what is going on in their life. If you want consistency in your responses or think your family would write more if given a prompt, choose one or two guiding questions. Write the prompts on an index card that doubles as a bookmark in the journal and place it inside. When each family member receives the journal, he or she has the option to respond to a question. Bring the journal to Thanksgiving celebrations year after year and watch the shared gratitude journal fill up with the details about the meaningful elements of your life and that of your loved ones.

Wonder Woman:
The Working Wife and Mom
by Anita Mckaney www.daughtersofthedeep.com
Who needs to dress up for Halloween when you are already Wonder Woman?!
God is first. He is always first but then managing the rest of my life can be a struggle. If I did not put God first, there is no way I could handle my life. I am one of those ¬women who are a working wife and mom, the so called “Wonder Woman”. I loved that show by the way. I was an 80’s girl, so many of us young girls looked up to her, especially my best friend and I. Diana was strong and had beautiful eyes and hair. She had a man that loved her and a great job! The best part was her super powers!
8
www.ncwkidconnect.com
She fought injustice, evil and kept it all together. You go, girl! I knew if Diana could do it, so could I. Then it happened…. I graduated college and went into nursing full time. I married immediately afterwards and two children followed. I was Wonder Woman…without the powers. That is what I was missing most. We need power, the power to do what God has called us to do in whichever situation we find ourselves. Wives need wife power. Moms need mom power and we all need Work power.
Wife Power.
Have you ever read “Power of a Praying Wife” by author Stormie Omartian? Prayer is powerful. However, it is not the act of prayer, but rather, it is our faith in the One who we are praying to, that makes the difference.
Enter wife power. The power came in prayer. My nagging, manipulation and 5 star meals were nothing compared to God’s ability to steer my husband towards his wife. For example, I was so frustrated about his choice of music, maybe I was selfish, but I was also concerned for what was entering my household in the form of music. So this time…

I remember wondering how to manipulate my husband into doing what I wanted in our earlier years of marriage. There had to be a way, I thought. Maybe great sex was the key, maybe amazing food or cheering on his favorite team would sway him. To my surprise and disappointment, those things actually worked…temporarily. However, I did not get what I was really after. I did not want to manipulate. I wanted him to want to do what I wanted. Ever been there?
I prayed. I prayed for months and I trusted God. I mentioned it to my husband and left it alone. I left it to God and prayed for peace in my heart. To my astonishment, the Lord changed his desires, his internal motivation and it resulted in what I had prayed for. Keep praying (1 Thessalonians 5:17, KJV). Super wives are super prayer warriors!
Mom Power
I love that the Bible gives us pictures of God as a mother. He delivers us and is hovering over us as a protector who picks us up in His arms (Hosea 11:3,4, KJV). Motherhood is a blessing and a challenge for me. I struggle with mom guilt with the best of them. I constantly wonder if I am doing things “right”, being a good example and cooking regularly nutritious meals to name a few.
M

r e Pow
Maybe you can relate. A change of mindset brought me to the realization that I had been chosen for this role, I begin to see that the Lord had even empowered me for the role. You see, the power to be mom comes from God. Knowing that you alone were uniquely selected by God to rear your children is a game changing thought. No one can love them like you. No one can impart the Word of God like you. No one can teach them like you. Mom power began at conception and absolutely no one is as capable to fill that superhero role…but you.

It is not a chore. It is a service to others, a privilege even. You have the power to influence the world by your attitude while working. What a revelation. How powerful is that?

Work Power
It is seldom that our plans and God’s plans for us are seeing eye to eye. Since He is above all and knows that His plans are superior, we really just need to get on board! You see, perspective is everything. When you are in that valley, you have no idea how things look from the mountaintop. Trusting God with your work whether that is at home or elsewhere is powerful. I remember praying that I could find a job where I could not work weekends so that I could attend church with my family, but in that season, the Lord allowed me to minister to so many non churchgoers online. I was amazed. During a different season, I worked in the evening and I complained about that, but did not realized until later that I was able to volunteer at my children’s school regularly ¬ what a blessing! While working, God gives us the power to encounter opportunities that others never will. It is the power to find the blessing in your current environment. If you look for God, you will find Him. When you find Him, you find the desire and the power to work willingly (Philippians 2:13).

“Lord”, I prayed, “this was not the plan!”.

Perhaps you dread Monday mornings. If you are like me, maybe you only wanted to only work part time to help out and ended up being the breadwinner of the family for a season.

SUPER Power
Have you noticed the theme? Our superpowers are absolutely rooted in the power of God. We are weak, frail and insufficient in comparison. On our best day, we are prone to failure…again, but on our worst days, with the superpower of God we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). It is the One within you that gives you the ability to supernaturally be the best at whatever you put your hands to do. He puts His super on our natural and it enables us to live lives that glorify Him instead of ourselves. Hopefully, these practical tips will encourage you how to be Super, in any circumstance, We can be Wonder Women because it is….
God who calls us, empowers us and enables us to the task at hand!

F
rom yelling newsroom pundits and vigorous dinner party debates to divisive Facebook exchanges, tis’ the season when there’s virtually no escape from politics. Your kids may come home with questions about opinions overheard at school or elsewhere. From a parenting perspective, the democratic process--and political shenanigans--provides plenty of fodder for teaching kids lessons in independent thinking, respectful discourse, values and civics.
Nurture independent thinkers. Take
advantage of the political process to help your children learn to think for themselves. Ask your children open-ended questions to hear their point of views. “Find out what they’re thinking. What you want to do is stimulate their analytic, natural human curiosity,” says Dr. Fran Walfish, a child and family psychotherapist and author of The Self Aware Parent: Resolving Conflict and Building a Better Bond with Your Child.
Watch the speeches and debates together. Ask your child who he thinks is telling the truth based on body language or who seems more respectful during a debate. Whether you agree or not, ask her: “Why do you feel that way? How would you solve the problem?” Share your opinions with your children by prefacing your comments with “I feel” or “I think” and ask questions like: “I wonder how he’ll make that happen? What do you think? How would you make it fair if you were president?”
Avoid anger. As hard as it may be, try to refrain from making judgmental comments or calling candidates with whom you disagree colorful names.
“Shouting at the TV, or at one another, presents a very negative example of responding to conflicting opinions,” says Mary Jane McKittrick, author of the Boomer and Halley children’s series (written for ages 4 to 8), including the Mom’s Choice awardwinning book Boomer and Halley: Election Day.
October/November 2016
11
Through humor and embedded life lessons, McKittrick’s books tell stories of families and communities resolving difficult challenges by working together.
Model respectful dialogue. Not all parents
agree on politics, but what matters is how they discuss the issues in front of their children without raising a child’s anxiety. Make ground rules with your spouse before engaging in the discussion: No interrupting, take turns listening and no putdowns, insults or blaming. And, if you come to an impasse, agree to disagree. “I would love for parents to respect each others point of views. I would also hope that they will respect their children’s point of view,” Walfish says. “Be able to tolerate differences. We still love each other, and I can tolerate you having powerfully different feelings than mine.” If you find yourself getting drawn into a heated argument around the table with loved ones, keep your cool and suggest you pick up the conversation at another time.
12
www.ncwkidconnect.com
Play nice--in politics?! Political rhetoric may be difficult for your child to comprehend, but behavior in politics can often parallel real-life situations your child can relate to about how we should treat each other and who we can trust. “Here we are: two political figures. They’re going to say their beliefs right out front, but wouldn’t it be nice if that was all they were doing,” Walfish says. “Instead what they’re doing is using putdowns, criticisms, (and) willing to go forward at all costs to win.” Perhaps the vindictive nature of politics will never change, but parents can use examples of how politicians conduct themselves to teach values about what it means to win honorably, treat others with respect and be a trustworthy friend. For example, on the playground, a child might promise your child that he can have the ball next, but then passes the ball to an ally or continues to hog the ball. Even a young child understands that the other child’s actions are unfair. “A good friend is someone who treats you right all of the time. And that’s what we’re looking for in politics,” Walfish says. “And a lot of times people
will say anything to get what they want, which is to win. Our job is to try to figure out who’s telling the truth, who’s going to deliver on the goods.”
Civics 101. Talk to your kids about the
democratic process. Take your child to the voting booth and follow the results on election night together to help her see the election process in action and the connection between your vote and why it matters. Explain that politicians are public servants and they usually enter the political process in an attempt to make a difference in the lives of citizens. “Parents can offer examples from their lives to illustrate giving to others as a positive way to explain politics,” McKittrick says. “After all, politics exist in our families, communities, schools and workplaces--not just at the ballot box.”

ratitude fills us up. A little inner appreciation helps us stop grasping at things outside of ourselves for sustenance and satisfaction. A thankful attitude strengthens relationships, reduces stress, improves health, and helps us feel happier in every moment of any day. But maybe your family has fallen out of the positive habit of noticing what they appreciate. Gratitude isn’t automatic, after all. But it is a habit you can practice in a few simple steps. Follow the following five steps to get back in the gratitude groove.
October/November 2016
15
Step one:
Step three:
Step two:
Step four:
Put the kibosh on complaining, criticizing, or gossiping for a specified amount of time like one week or even a whole month. Discuss the definitions of each of these three words with your family. Then playfully bust each other when one of you breaks a rule. You will, and that’s okay. Build awareness of negative habits rather than shaming, and then redirect attention in a more positive direction. Be sure to explain that having legitimate needs and expressing those needs is encouraged and expected. No family member should feel like they can’t ask for what they legitimately need. If negative communication patterns persist, try interrupting them with the question, “What do you need right now?” You might be surprised to discover that meeting basic needs helps everyone shift into a more positive attitude. And don’t be afraid to ask yourself, “What do I need?” Once every family member is getting needs met, or at least getting needs on a schedule to be met, gratitude flows in.
16
www.ncwkidconnect.com
Recognize what you feel grateful for throughout the day. This can become a new habit if you are usually so busy you are just trying to keep up with everyone’s busy schedules. Try to pause several times a day when you feel happy and discover the source, so you can model the habit for the rest of your family.
Acknowledge something you feel grateful about by writing it down or saying it aloud to someone else. Or do both. Gratitude becomes more positive when appreciated by you and others.
Step five:
After you recognize and acknowledge something to feel grateful for, sit with it for at least a count of ten. Make your gratitude process at least as long as several deep breaths. This way you make something positive a little bigger and start to reap the benefits of your gratitude practice immediately. And who doesn’t want to be happier right now?
19 Daily Gratitude Techniques Still need more help? Try these techniques until they become habits.
5.
Every day, look for ways you can deepen your appreciation for everyday life. When you do this with conviction, you set a good example for the rest of the family.
6.
Write something you appreciated from earlier in the day on the calendar as the sun sets each day. Then you can look back at your calendar in the future and remember the month fondly.
1.
Find something around you right now to appreciate. Look around the room. What do you see, smell, hear, taste or feel? Our senses help us connect with our appreciation.
7.
Appreciate mistakes you make today. Tell your children stories of how bouncing back from misjudgments makes you a more humble person, who is not afraid to be human.
2.
Notice how your young children set an example of spontaneous gratitude and then follow their leads. Approach your day through a child’s eyes.
3.
Post reminders of things you appreciate about family members on sticky notes. Leave a message on the coffee pot for your spouse. Put a note in with lunch. Get in the habit of leaving little appreciation notes on go-to screens throughout the house.
4.
Keep an ongoing list of something you are grateful for right now. Use the notes app in your smart phone to keep track or keep a memo pad in your purse.
Take a moment to recollect what inspires awe in you whether changing seasons, a person who lifts you up, or someone who is really good at what they do. Don’t let a day go by without checking in with these inspiring touchstones.
8.
Say something kind to someone and mean it. Tell folks what you admire about them. If you like what a person is wearing, say so. If this person is always stylish, compliment them for it.
9.
Discuss lessons learned in the past. Everyone goes through challenges in life. Don’t try to forget yours. Turn them into a list of characterbuilding stories about your life.
continued on next page...
October/November 2016
17
Appreciate something with another person. Remarking, “It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?” helps you both focus on the positive and forget distracting thoughts.
10.
In moments that are hard, appreciate the opportunity to grow in character, even if you don’t like what is happening. Sometimes in life, we have to take our medicine.
11.
16.
Don’t keep good news to yourself. Notice good service and offer feedback about it before you forget. If you can’t get your hands on a comment card, ask to speak to a manager and report good employees.
15.
12.
At a weekend meal, ask everyone to share best moments of the week. You can do this around the dinner table or at tuck-in time. Even once a week is better than never. If kids are feeling down, ask for a positive and a negative to balance out all the feelings.
Always try to be as present as possible whether interacting with others, whether strangers or family members. Put your phone down or stop what you are doing. Be attentive, not distracted.
17.
Find a cause that is important to you and contribute time, money or energy. Remember that there is no perfect way to do this. Whatever you can do, let it be enough. Then be sure to share the experience with your kids.
18.
T h a n k someone daily for something no matter how small. If you want your kids to be more grateful, thank them for things you appreciate. Gratitude begets gratitude.
Accept a compliment from someone else, whenever one is offered. Stop, smile, and say thank you. Practice self-kindness with yourself so you can offer kindness to others.
14.
19.
13.
Appreciate nature and the earth. Where would you be without them? Stop to smell a beautiful flower or pick up a pretty stone to take home and put on your dresser or on a bookshelf.
Use the calendar on your phone to alert you to pause for a moment and find something to feel grateful about. Add it to your gratitude list or just relax for a minute and savor the moment.

Meet the Hinderer Family
Naoko and Garth met in Japan where he was teaching English after graduating from college. They got married in 2004 and moved back to Waterville where Garth was raised and had returned to work on the family farm. Naoko went from speaking Japanese to speaking English, from living in Japan to living in America, from living in Tokyo (13 million people) to Waterville (1,100 people) and from being single to being married. WOW! To say that it was an adjustment is an understatement.
construct an agenda for the trip. Each visit is something that they really enjoy as a family and is a highlight of the year. Wheat farming is at its busiest during the summer months which means they don’t always get a traditional summer vacation. Winter is a slower time, which is a big reason they have taken up skiing as the family hobby. It doesn’t hurt that they live less than five miles from Badger Mountain Ski Hill...!
Their family expansion began in 2008 with the birth of Hana. May was next in 2010 and capped it off with the birth of their son Asa in 2012. It has been a priority from the start for their kids to be bilingual with Japanese and English. Naoko only speaks to the kids in Japanese, and so far, it is working and has helped Garth’s Japanese as well. They say they just couldn’t imagine their kids not being able to talk to family in Japan.
Garth is a Wheat Farmer and a long time member of United Lutheran Church. He is also a Saxophonist in s local music group - The Proclaiming Brass. Naoko started making soap about a year ago as a hobby that quickly turned into something more. Field Moon Handmade Soap (fieldmoonsoap.com) is a growing business that has many customers and fans.
As their family has grown, it has become more difficult to go back to Japan for regular visits. When they do get the chance, it is a big deal and they spend many months planning and savoring each possible adventure as they
Garth and Naoko have three children, Hana, May and Asa. Hana is eight years old, an avid reader and can craft anything with paper, cardboard, scissors, glue, string and tape! May is 6 years old, who loves Drawing and has her

DYour ay by Day Calendar Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities.
However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. Sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), there will be a few every so often. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 26! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Fall. Happy Planning!

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24 HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Turkey on the Run 12K and 5K and Kids Race
9:00am at Rotary Park in Wenatchee Turkey on the Run is a great way to kick off your holiday season with a fun and fit jaunt in Wenatchee. This annual family friendly event has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition in the community and attracts both residents and people visiting for the holiday. All events start and end at Rotary Park on Western Ave in Wenatchee. This event is also used to raise money and collect nonperishable foods for the Women’s Resource Center in Wenatchee. We also continue our support of the Columbia Valley Girls On The Run program. During Turkey on the Run, hundreds of local girls, ages 8 to 12, will run in their first 5K! Each girl will have an adult running buddy to

Take 5: Devotional The Search for Happiness I just want to be happy. Happiness. We all want it, but few find it. Yet, so many decisions we make in life are driven by this desire. So what is true happiness? And does God even care about our happiness? The Bible shows us that God cares deeply about our desire for happiness and shows us where true happiness can be found. In the beginning, in Genesis, we see the world fresh and new. No sin, no pain, no turmoil. There we find Adam and Eve. Their entire role was to be fruitful and multiply, reigning over the earth in harmony and peace. Loving life and living the dream. This is the way things should be – true happiness, as God intended. Sounds pretty good, right? But there’s a problem. Looking at the world today, something’s clearly missing. Wars, economic uncertainty, broken families, the perfection and beauty of what God created has been lost. It seems happiness is something we all desire but few find. So what happened? Sin entered the world. As a result, we’ve become consumed with searching for happiness in all the wrong places. Is it a career? If only I had that next promotion, that next raise - then I’d be happy. What about a relationship? If only I meet ‘the one’ – then I’d be happy. Is happiness in our ‘stuff’? The newest technology, the faster car, bigger house – then I’d be happy. Looking for happiness in things will never satisfy. In the end, we find ourselves just looking further. Here is the good news: Jesus offers a solution. He came to offer us a real life, abundant life, far more than anything we could discover on our own. A life of joy and meaning and purpose and, yes, happiness. In what areas of your life are you searching for happiness and turning up empty? Start today by asking God to show you what true, lasting happiness looks like. This is Day 1 of a 15 day devotional on the Youversion bible app. Download the app today to start this reading plan! Even five minutes a day in God’s word will have a positive impact in your life!
