Nikki’s Note Back to School = Back to Work.
Well, by the time you read this, my kids (and probably your kids) are back in school. What will I do with all the free time? Oh yeah, probably get my house back in order that my children so lovingly destroyed in their 80 days home... I always feel like this is the time when I will get things done that really need it (you know, like cleaning out the fridge or rearranging the furniture or organizing closets and junk drawers...), but nevertheless, a project always finds me. And I dive in and tackle in head on. This year, my distraction is leading a bible study. A good distraction to have, but a distraction nonetheless.
You may notice that this is a smaller issue, only September, instead of September/October. No worries, we will be back to our two month issues next month beginning with October/November! I feel like I should add a follow up to my last note... I was in shock that my two older girls were choosing to share a room and they were on about day 10 of sleeping in the same room when I last wrote. Well, I am completely shocked and utterly surprised to update you and tell you that they are STILL in the same room! Who are these children? They have changed so much over this summer, it is crazy. They really do grow like weeds! I hope you all had a great summer, full of adventure as well as lazy days. You may not have gotten to everything on your Summer Bucket List, but I hope you can look back and enjoy what you did do! And get to work on that Fall bucket list.... it’s coming up fast!

I am leading a study on a book called Anchored, written by Erin Cushman. It is for women who have experienced a miscarriage, a still birth, or an infant death at any point in their life. It will be a 10-week study and we will share our stories, pray together, read God’s word, ask questions and bond. There is nothing like the bond of moms who have experienced similar loss. If this describes you, I would encourage you to come join us! You can email me with any questions you have! The study begins on September 24th. And if you know anyone who would benefit from this study, please feel free to pass my info along to them. (nikki@ncwkidconnect.com)

tuning up your friendships
by Nikki Cox

www.ncwkidconnect.com
We have all heard the saying, “If mama ain’t happy, then ain’t nobody happy.” There have actually been studies shown that this is true for the most part. Arizona State University reports that in addition to a strong relationship with their partners, their friendships with other women played an important role in a mom’s well-being. Did you know that September is International Women’s Friendship Month? No better time than now to start strengthening and rekindling those friendships! Especially with school back in session and getting back to a normal routine. Friendship, especially for moms, is so important. After you have a child, your life seems to revolve around this little one, their nap schedule, bath times, feedings, snacks, meals, diaper changes, etc. And nurturing the friendships you already have, let alone making new friends, can seem like more of a challenge now than ever. And no matter how frequently you check your Facebook feed, social media is no substitute for spending time together in person. Getting together with other moms, whether it be one or a large group, can seem like a luxury. But really, it’s a necessity. Just like regular dates with your spouse are important, so are regular, scheduled dates with friends. It needs to be a priority. To help you find things to do together and ways to change it up (anyone else tired of ½ price appetizer dates at Applebees?), I have complied a short list of ideas to spark your interest and encourage you to get out there and enjoy some girl time. All you need to do now is pick a date, put it on the calendar and schedule around it. Make it a priority; don’t let life get in the way!

The Classics
Go to dinner, happy hour, go see a movie, do some wine tasting, see a concert, attend a play, do some shopping in Leavenworth, get a mani/pedi. The classics are great. And honestly, dinner with a friend doesn’t have to be fancy; I’d be happy to sit at Arby’s with good company! And if y’all need to wait until the kids are in bed before you can meet (you know, to help out those hubby’s…), go for some dessert! Who says you need a full on meal to make it worthwhile? The conversation is what you’re really after.
Take a Class
Take a pottery class or a glass fusion class at Inspirations. Schedule a night at Class with a Glass and do some painting while indulging in a good drink. Check out the classes offered at Craft Warehouse and Hobby Lobby. Call a bakery and ask if they will host a cookie or cake decorating tutorial for your group (most of them will!), learn a new dance… (the weekly events section has a heads up on some venues/days)
Be Artsy
Host a Pinterest party, where you two or three crafts set out and rotate through them. Have a card making party; it’s never too early get started on Christmas cards! Put together frozen meals and spend your time chopping veggie, cooking meat and measuring ingredients. Have a project party where everyone can bring a project they started and finish it while enjoying good company! Make some jewelry, seasonal crafts, scrapbook… etc. Even if you aren’t crafty, it will surely turn out to be a memorable night with some good pictures to boot!
Get Moving!
Go for a hike, ride bikes around the loop (you can rent bikes from Arlberg if you don’t have one!), try paddle boarding or kayaking. Go ice skating or bowling. Take a groups fitness class…. Spinning, Zumba, hot yoga, jazzercise… gyms will often have a ‘drop-in’ rate for these classes.
Volunteer
Put your organization skills to use and offer to organize a food bank, put together food baskets through packing friendships or just on your own. Serve dinner at the Lighthouse Mission or cook a meal for the Grace House. Have a packing party for Operation Christmas Child or Hope Mommies. Walk the dogs at the shelter. Bring
8

sandwiches or socks to the homeless. Hold signs on the street corner for a politician you are supporting. Go for a walk in the park while picking up garbage. Go to a nursing home and talk with the residents. Play card games if they are able or color pictures with them. Flower-bomb a parking lot with friends (buy flowers and stick one on every car in the parking lot with a simple note that says ‘smile’ or ‘have a great day’. Endless ideas on how you can serve together!
Game Night
Board games, card games, bunco, bocce ball, poker (who says it’s only for the men?!?). Host a trivia night (or find one happening in town! Saddlerock Brewery or upper Eastside Coffee are two places I know of off the top of my head that host regular trivia nights. Play left center right or have a scavenger hunt.
A Night In
Rent a Redbox movie or have a Netflix binge session. Have a themed dinner night, potluck style, where everyone brings something that goes along with the theme. Have a wine tasting in your own home; everyone brings a bottle of wine and you do a blind taste testing to determine your favorites without knowing the brands or prices beforehand. Host a Favorite Things party, where each woman brings four of the same item ($6 or less limit). Then you write your name down on four pieces of paper. All the names go in the hat and everyone picks out four names and ends up leaving the party with four new ‘gifts’. A great way to get to know people and try guessing who brought what and not only that, but you also leave with some pretty fabulous new items! What costs $6 or less, you ask? You could choose a favorite lip gloss, nail polish, gift card to fro-yo or coffee, candy, favorite kitchen tool, etc.
A date with the babes
If going out without your kiddos is not quite an option for you yet, there are still some options. Got babies? Go for a walk during nap time and let them sleep away in their strollers while you get some girl time in. Or go for a drive while they sleep in the car. Go through the drive-thru and grab some coffee or some lunch and enjoy the drive with some good company. Got toddlers? Enroll them in a gymnastics class with a friends’ kid and you get to gab for 45 minutes while they are in class. Go to an open gym, or a kaleidoscope play and learn group, or indoor playground (coming November!). Or you can drop your kiddos off at Teams Learning Center for a few hours (only $20 for three hours!) and go enjoy a mani/pedi date.**

Ways to Simplify Family Dinner
Many parents find themselves so busy with work, school, extracurricular activities, and errands that cooking weeknight meals seems impossible. In reality, eating at home can be faster, easier, and more affordable, even on those busy school nights. Try these tips for quick and easy meal planning. Make Two - If you are making one casserole, why not make two? One can be eaten now, and the other can be frozen and saved for dinner another night.
Stock the Freezer - Fill your freezer with both pre made and homemade items to have on hand for a busy week. Use the Slow Cooker - Toss some things together in the morning and come home to a hot meal after a long day. Buy Pre Made Ingredients - Pre cut vegetables, cooked rotisserie chicken, and ready to grill marinated meat are perfect for the busy family. Leftover NIght - Designate one night a week to eat whatever is in the fridge and save time and money Stock the Pantry - Have meals on hand you can turn to in a bind, such as spaghetti, bean burritos, or quesadillas
Double Duty - Use extra ingredients to make two meals. For example - Leftover taco meat could become enchiladas, nachos, or chili. Grilled chicken breast could be used for a salad, soup, or a casserole. Theme nights - Monday - Pasta, Tuesday - Tacos, Wednesday - Stir Fry…. and to make it even easier, repeat every week to streamline your grocery list, steady your grocery budget, and simplify meal planning. Love Eating Out? - Add a “Night Out” to your meal plan once in awhile to treat yourself and your family.
Make it Fun - Get the kids involved in meal planning, food prep, and most importantly, enjoy mealtime together. Bio: Sarah Lyons is a busy mom of six children who uses meal planning every week to make sure there is time for dinner with her family.

Questions to Pump Your Kids Up for School
by Lara Krupicka
A new school year. It seems you either you dread it or embrace it. For those who embrace it, a new school year is ripe with possibility and opportunities for growth and exploration. A new grade with new friends to make, new topics to learn about, new abilities to test. But not everyone jumps up and down for back to school time. Rather than bemoaning the start of school as if it equals the end of fun, why not poise your child for success by helping them frame it in a positive light. Encourage them to look forward to achieving goals they set for themselves both in and out of the classroom. And don’t leave all the anticipation to the kids. It’s also a great time of year to set your own goals.

Ways to Use a School Year Goals List with Your Family
For Kids:
-What I’m most looking forward to being in my new grade at school... -On the playground I want to... -This school year I want to join... -In gym class my goal is to... -At lunch this year I hope to... -When it comes to homework, a new thing I want to try... -This year at school I want to become known for... -The person I would like to get to know better ... -Before I finish this grade, I would like to be able to ...
For Tweens and Teens:
-What will be great about being a [grade/ year in school] is... -A school activity I would like to experience for the first time this year (picnic/social, dance, game, performance, etc.)... -I think I’m ready to take the role of... -I would like to hang out more with... -At lunch this year I hope to... -This year at school I want to become known for... -The club/team I plan to check out or try out for... -When it comes to schoolwork, I’d like to try... -Over winter or spring break it would be great to... -Before this school year ends my goal is to... ...continued on next page
School year goals make great conversation topics. As the year goes on, check in about how your child is progressing toward goals. “How’s it going on the playground? Have you made it across the monkey bars yet like you hoped to?” Talk about goals in the car or over dinner. • Look at your child’s list when signing up for park district or YMCA programs or other lessons. Has he expressed a desire to try something new or is it time to register for oneon-one training to improve certain skills? • Let her teacher know what she’s looking forward to about school this year and bring the teacher on board in helping her reach any academic goals she has set. • Sneak a note into your child’s lunch encouraging him to step out in fulfilling a goal. • Use report card time as an opportunity to celebrate goals successes and refocus energy for those not yet fulfilled. September 2016

For Parents:
-Goals for your child -My hopes for my child this school year include... -The person I would like to see my child interact with outside of school - for the first time, or more often... -The practical life skill (setting the table, taking a phone message, making a grocery list, etc.) I would like to work on teaching my child this year... -By the end of the school year I would like my child to...
Goals for yourself:
-To learn more this year, the book I plan to read or course I want to take... -A child, other than my own, I could consider becoming a mentor or role model to... -Another parent, co-worker, or neighbor I would like to work on building a closer friendship with in the coming months... -When it comes to volunteering, this school year I would like to...
For Families:
-On a weekend we would like to try... -A family we would like to invite to hang out with us... -At least once a week/once a month our goal is to... -Together we want to learn... Writing a school year goals list not only builds hopes for what will come in the school year, it also creates a sense of purpose and encourages kids to push themselves to reach their targets. Plus talking through these prompts with your child allows you to learn what’s important to them, what concerns them, and who they see themselves becoming. It’s a chance for growing closer and an opportunity for you to show your support. Given a list of September-to-June goals, when the school year ends you’ll have more to celebrate than the grades on their report card!**

Ways to Remember the Goals You’ve Set • Post them on the refrigerator or family bulletin board. • Write them in the back of an assignment notebook or planner. • Use a goal-tracking app such as Nozbe or GoalsOnTrack. • Set a reminder on your smart phone to pop up regularly (weekly, monthly) to check on goals.

We love the Mile High Mud Pie at Bobs Classic!!
DYour ay by Day Calendar Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities. However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. Sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), there will be a few every so often. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 44! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Fall Happy Planning!
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 31 We asked our readers where their favorite ice cream stop is... their answers can be found in the kid pics!
We love the banana splits at Shari’s! Actually...there is no ice cream that we don’t like!
Enjoying ice cream after a long hot summer day. Favorite place is a tie between Blue spoon and Ice at Pybus.

Robbie Schaefer 7:00pm-9:00pm at Snowy Owl Theater in Leavenworth Hi, I’m Robbie and I like to tell stories. Usually I tell them with words and music, a guitar strapped around my shoulder, and an earnest look on my face. Sometimes I leave the guitar at home and just use the words part. And sometimes, when I don’t feel like talking, I sit in my underwear at the kitchen table with a nice espresso and write the story down. Either way, what I’m really after with these stories is exploring that little space between you and me that I call our shared aliveness. I love that and find it the most authentic place to be. What’s more is I find that the more we live in that space, the more compassionate our world becomes. So, welcome gentle soul. And keep your feet off the sofa. It’s new. $22 General Admission / $24 at the door $12 Student / $14 at the door Free for ages 12 & under with Adult. For more information, visit icicle.org/ performances/robbie-schaefer

Take 5: Devotional Saved by Grace, Not by Works YouVersion Bible App ‘Essential Scripture For 30 Days’ This is Day 1 of this plan. Download the app today, find the plan and make it your goal for September!
Paul is writing a letter to the Christians in the city of Ephesus (hence the name of the book in the Bible is Ephesians). Paul explains earlier in this chapter that all people “were dead in their transgressions and sins” but are now made alive in Christ. In these verses, Paul is specifying how Christians are saved and have eternal life. By good works? Because we’ve earned it? No! He explains that we are saved by grace (God’s free, unearned favor and forgiveness of sins) and that we have this grace by faith in Jesus Christ, and that alone. Review: What did you learn about God? What did you learn about mankind? What will you do differently today as a result of these verses?
