Who's On The Cover?
Nikki's Note As summer came so quickly, it is now halfway over! Oh, how the time can fly by…… especially when you have a household of little ones running around. Although, at the same time, it can also seem to drag on and on if you are like me and are anxiously awaiting the arrival of another little one (or, maybe in your case, your first one)! My name is Nikki Cox and I welcome you to North Central Washington Kid Connect’s premiere issue! I am so excited to be able to share this magazine with you! It has been a long time coming and something I have been craving since my family moved here to Wenatchee in March of 2011. This magazine is written for parents, grandparents, and caregivers of all children ages newborn through teenagers. My promise to you is to provide as much information as possible to keep you “in the loop” as to what is going on around the valley that you can enjoy with your entire family. In this issue, we take you on the journey of meeting little Makenna, who lives with Larsen’s Syndrome. This issue will also introduce some topics that you will see in every issue such as Road Trip ideas, Holiday Traditions, Favorite Books for both mom and child, “Take Five”- a quick devotional, and also ideas for how your family can help serve and give back to our community. I hope you enjoy reading this magazine as much as I have enjoyed creating it. I also hope you help pass it around and share it with other parents. If you are interested in being a part of Kid Connect, please see to the left.
Hannah Cox is a 2 year old who lives in Wenatchee. And, yes, she is my youngest daughter! She is wild and crazy and not afraid of anything! She loves to play with her dollies, help mommy in the kitchen and follow around her best friend and big sister, KaeLee around 24/7.
Now, hurry up and enjoy the rest of your summer! It will be gone before you know it!
Nikki

in the s d i K Kitchen
E
very kid loves to be a helper. And every kid feels so proud and special when they are allowed to help with “adult” things. I know for me, my kids love to “help” with emptying the dishwasher, folding clothes, separating laundry, putting clothes into the washer and dryer, wrap the cord up after I vacuum, etc. and they are only 2 and 3 years old. Although it takes a lot of patience and quite a bit of extra time, the lessons they learn from it and the character and responsibility they build are more than worth it. A bonus is the time you get to spend with them. They don’t care what you do with them during that time, they just like to be with you. Another way to get your kids involved is to get them into the kitchen. Find age-appropriate tasks that your kids can help with. Even just letting them sit on the counter to watch you is exciting enough to them! This recipe is perfect for those times when it’s your turn to bring snacks for your playdate group, MOPS, Sunday school, preschool, or even for a birthday party or a sports team. Have your kids paint (or color with markers) the clothespins, glue on the eyes, or maybe even just pick out the snacks to go in the baggies. This easy recipe is sure to be a hit wherever you go….. for both the kids AND the parents! Go ahead and let them envy the amount of time you have on your hands to create something so cool…… it’ll be our little secret how long it actually took….!
RECIPE
You Will Need: • Clothespins • Googly eyes • Colorful pipe cleaners • Snack-sized ziplock baggies • Snacks for filling o Can use goldfish, assorted cereals, grapes, blueberries, dried fruit, yogurt rasins, etc. How To Do It: • Decorate the clothespins with either paint or markers • Glue on the googly eyes • Fill the Baggies with your goodies, leaving enough “empty space’ in the middle • Clip on your clothespin • Add the pipe cleaners into the clothespin and twirl the ends a bit to resemble antennae
GIVE SOLES FROM HEAVEN
This is a ministry through Columbia Grove Covenant Church here in East Wenatchee that gives shoes to children in need just in time for back to school. They partner with Serve Wenatchee Valley and their annual Back To School Clothing Giveaway event. Every year, they give away more than 1,000 new pairs of shoes! This year’s event is taking place on Saturday, August 18th from 8:00am-12:00pm at Saddlerock Presbyterian Church. (1400 S Miller Ave in Wenatchee) The Back to School Giveaway doesn’t just give away shoes, either! They give away clothes, haircuts, face painting, balloons, books, goodies, food and more! If you and your family would like to help with this ministry and be a part of something amazing, please contact Linda Belton at the Columbia Grove church office 860-4001 or at 679-5497 or Serve Wenatche Valley at 663-4673. Please visit solesfromheaven.com for more information. You can donate shoes, monetary gifts or help at the event itself!

T E A E N M EN K A M
Makenna is a 9 year old girl who lives here
in East Wenatchee with her parents and her little brother, Connor. She is a bright-spirited young girl who has the whole world at her fingertips and she sure is eager to explore it! She loves to camp, play piano and hang out with her family and friends. If you were talking to Makenna over the phone, she would seem just like any other 9 year old girl, giddy about life and looking forward to her next sleepover with her best friends. But Makenna is a special girl, living with Larsen’s Syndrome. Larsen’s is a condition characterized by congenital dislocation of multiple body joints. Larsen’s Syndrome is unique in that it only affects 1 in 100,000 people. Shawn and Melissa, Makenna’s parents, have known about her condition since birth. They have spent countless number of days in Seattle at Seattle Children’s Hospital, but the older Makenna gets, the less they have to make the trip. They are down to going only every few months, the latest being just this April for a back surgery for Makenna. This was her 10th surgery. Melissa says that just because her outward appearance may be different than others, her heart is just the same. Though I think it’s probably bigger than most other 9 year olds! Makenna has a unique perspective on life because she knows how great it can be, despite the troubles going on. Makenna says, “Sometimes it can be tough. But sometimes it can be awesome!” and she just focuses on the awesome. Makenna is a strong girl who stays positive and sees through the hard times to the blessings that Larsen’s has given her. “There are some things that people with Larsen’s get to do that other people don’t get to do” said Makenna. One of these things she is referring to is Camp Korey. Makenna looks forward to Camp Korey every year and is so excited to return again this summer.
Camp Korey is a camp in Carnation, WA that provides special camps throughout the year for kids and their families with medical disabilities. And there is a week set aside just for skeletal dysplasia that Makenna gets to attend. Makenna says her most memorable day EVER was at Camp Korey when they broke out into “a gigantic food fight with noodles, cherries, melted chocolate and lots of other stuff” She described the camp as “AMAZING!” and “AWESOME!” Camp Korey also offers a family camp that Makenna’s family attends and loves.

What You Can Do
Makenna and her brother, Connor
Makenna’s support system here in Wenatchee couldn’t be greater. Their family has come to call her support system her “entourage”, as they are always there for her to welcome her home, send her off to Seattle, support her in the hard times and celebrate with her in the good. Her classmates and teachers at her elementary school have been especially supportive, sending her well wishes, cards, gifts, visiting her (including her principal!), and helping her raise money for Seattle Children’s Hospital. Last Fall, during Make A Difference Day, Makenna wanted to do something to help raise money. She rallied her family and friends together to put on a bake sale and raised over $3,000. Her uncle matched her earnings and made her total over $6,000! Another pretty exciting thing that has recently happened to Makenna is getting contacted by Make A Wish Foundation to get a wish granted. Though Makenna has yet to decide on a wish, she is THRILLED about this. Just another blessing that has come out of having Larsen’s that other kids don’t get. Though Makenna may be outwardly different from other kids her age, and her mom says she is the same on the inside, I think she has far surpassed other kids her age and her heart is bulging out of her chest with kindness and compassion. A true example that God only makes great things. Makenna and her family
When Makenna and her family are asked how they can help, they answer with supporting these foundations. If, after hearing Makenna’s story, you feel moved to do something, please consider these foundations. They are close to Makenna’s heart and have brought her so much joy throughout her journey. I know a road trip to Yakima may seem a bit boring, and I promise to deliver more exciting road trip ideas in future issues, but as the premiere issue of Kid Connect, I thought it would be a great way to show you all where I came from and hopefully show you that Yakima CAN be a bit exciting. Of course, having family in the town always makes it that much more enjoyable….! Technically, I grew up in Moxee, but since it is just 4 miles outside of town, it’s easier to say I grew up in Yakima. Having said that, there are actually quite a few fun things to do for kids in Yakima and I will share just a few of those here with you. Yakima is just a short 2 hour drive from Wenatchee, whether you take Blewett Pass or travel through Quincy. It’s a perfect distance if your kids are still taking naps! When my family plans a trip to Yakima, we leave at nap time and allow the girls to get a good nap in and then we head back home at bedtime and are able to just scoop the kids up and put them in their beds when we get home. They miss out on bath that night, but it’s worth it! A great place to start once you get to Yakima is Kids Castle. It is a huge indoor play area inside of Gymnastics Plus where the kiddos can get all their energy out plus more. They can climb, slide, go through the obstacle course, run through the tunnels and more! The best day to go is Wednesday when 2 kiddos can play for the price of one! After expending all that energy, the kiddos would get a kick out of visiting the Museum Soda Fountain. The Museum Soda Fountain is a working exhibit of a late 1930’s soda fountain. Sodas, sundaes, and milkshakes are created with Tillamook ice cream. Hot dogs, chili, soup and sandwiches are also available. This is a must see to appreciate! It is located in the Yakima Valley Museum and is open in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Next, head over to the Skateland Fun Center. This is a great place to get some exercise, have some fun, and learn a new skill (or maybe a few new tricks!). Though, during the week, Skateland is only open Wednesday afternoons or
12
Monday thru Thursday in the evenings. Each Wednesday afternoon, from 1:30-4:30 is Wacky Wednesday with a different wacky theme each week. Skateland accepts cash only as form of payment, so be prepared. Enjoy some quality family time with some good music and lots of laughs! Skateland carries children’s size 6 and up for skates, or you are welcome to bring your own. If you are in more of an outdoor mood, head over to Meadowbrook Family Fun Center and take the kiddos miniature golfing, let them take a few swings at the batting cages, challenge them to a go-cart race or see who can stay the driest on the bumper boats! Then head inside for some arcade games including, my favorite, SkeeBall! By this time, I am sure even YOU will be exhausted. For dinner, you must have a famous Miner Burger at Miners Drive In! The burgers are anything but “Minor”. Beware when you order your fries…. You may just need ONE order of fries for the entire family! And the shakes are to die for! They offer over 30 different flavors! There is a lot of seating, both inside and out. They make everything to order, so it will not be as quick as McDonalds, but definitely will be quicker than a sit down restaurant. This is a popular place for sports teams to stop after a game, so be prepared to see a few buses if you are there on a game night! For the drive home, grab a coffee to keep you awake (there seems to be a coffee stand on every corner in the city, but if it’s a late night, Crusin Coffee is open 24 hours!) and have a safe drive home! I hope you enjoy my home town as much as I loved growing up there!

Just For YOU
Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks is unlike any of his other books. This book is a bit darker and more suspense and mystery in it rather than focusing heavily on the romance factor (though there is still plenty of that!). This book has already been made into a movie and the release date into the theaters will be announced soon. So if you want to read this book before it hits the big screen, grab your keys and head to Hastings!
Heaven Is For Real by Todd Burpo is a book based on a little boy’s claims of visiting Heaven while he nearly died on the surgical table. He tells of his experience and what and who he sees. This story will take your breath away and will surely bring tears to your eyes. It is a very heart warming story that is sure to bring you hope and, hope fully, closer to the Lord!
Yada Yada Prayer Group Series by Neta Jackson is a seven book series that brings a group of women together at a conference and they become great friends, starting a prayer group. This book will take you on their life journeys and will teach you (or remind you!) of the importance of prayer. These women help each other with prayer, love and friendship. A truly heartwarming story and a great read!
We want YOUR favorites! Send us your favorite books - both for kids and adults! Please send your book suggestions to nikki@ncwkidconnect.com 16
This is one of my (and my kids’) favorite books. Sandra Boynton is a great author with silly books that young “readers” will fall in love with. Feel free to use your “silly voice” when reading this to your young ones and take advantage of this time to practice your dramatic abilities! This, and all other Boynton books make great baby shower gifts as well as 1st & even 2nd birthday gifts.
a great book for kids ages 3-10 years. It teaches children the important of kindness to others. It teaches the power that words have and the benefits of kind words. It is written in a metaphor, making it easier for children to understand and relate to. Every elementary classroom should have this on their shelves for sure! And what a great book to add to your child’s library at home too!

We are all broken. Every. Single. One. Of. Us. We all sin and
fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). As a stay at home mom of a 2 and 3 year old, I find myself several times a day asking God for patience and grace. What a struggle life is. Whether you are also a stay at home parent, a busy, working parent with a stressful job, a teenager struggling with peer pressure, a senior wondering where the good old days have gone, a teacher who is constantly trying to inspire students…. We all need grace.

Grace is a GIFT from God. It is not earned or bought by works. It is a FREE gift that the Lord blesses us with even though we do not deserve it. We need God’s grace. Not only for salvation and eternal life (Ephesians 2:8), but also for our daily walk with the Lord. We are weak and prone to stray, but God provides daily strength through his grace working in us. No matter what you have done, no matter where you have been, God’s grace is sufficient for you (2 Corinthians 12:9). I once had someone tell me, “There is nothing you can do to make God love you more, and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less. “ Let that soak into your brain and into your heart. YOU are enough for God. You and ALL of your imperfections. Need Some ideas for a night

Local Business SPOTLIGHT Smallwoods Harvest is a great place to be enjoyed by everyone in the family, no matter your age. Not only do they carry all the local fresh fruits and veggies in season; they have hundreds of specialty goods such as honeys, jams, pickles, sauces, snacks, and even their own private label wine. You can even shop for all these goodies online at smallwoodsharvest.com! There are countless activites for the kids to enjoy as well! There is a small Tike Trike Track for the little ones to ride the trikes around in the safe, fenced area. Let the kids take a ride on the Cow Train, check out the action at Lexi’s Egg Factory, feed the animals in the petting farm, or take their chances at making it out of the prop maze! There are also horseshoe pits, picnic tables and much more! In the Fall, expect to see a huge pumpkin patch and in the Spring, get ready for the big Easter Egg Hunt. Smallwoods is also visited frequently by L-Bow the Clown, who loves to perform for the kids (and adults!). In fact, upcoming performances by L-Bow can be expected on June 30th at 12:00pm, July 14th at 2:00pm, July 28th at 2:00pm and August 10461 Stemm Road 11th at 2:00pm. So bring your whole family Peshastin WA, 98847 out and support this local, family owned and (509) 548-4196 operated business since 1976.

This summer is all about the kids and making sure they have what they need to grow, learn and play. The church works all year to raise enough money through Soles From Heaven to purchase 1,000 new pairs of tennis shoes for the kids in our valley to be given away at the Back to School Clothing Giveaway on August 18th. Columbia Grove feels that kids can “run faster, jump higher and learn better with new shoes”. Over the past 8 years, Columbia Grove has given away more than 10,000 pairs of shoes and have raised over $100,000 for the kids.
To learn more about Soles From Heaven, please visit “Give Back” on page 9. If you would like to make a donation, go to columbiagrove.org, or solesfromheaven.com or call Linda Belton at 679-5497. If you would like to volunteer at the event, call Serve Wenatchee Valley at 663-4673
