It’s back! May has, once again, rolled around at just the right time! My favorite month. My favorite time of year! I just hope it lives up to my expectations! How’s the year going for you so far? We are about halfway through. How are you doing on your New Year’s Resolutions? Or can you even remember what they were?!? I can’t. So I just use this check in point to make new ones with the hopes that they may last a little longer. My half point resolution for this year is to be a little more organized this summer with my kiddos, in hopes of lessening the “I’m so bored I think I’ll go hit my sister” moments.
Mondays: Make it Monday (bake/cook something, do a craft, build something, etc.) Tuesdays: Take a Trip Tuesday (go to a movie, a museum, on a hike, etc.) Wednesdays: Wet & Wild Wednesday (swimming, water park, splash pad, etc) Thursdays: Thinking Thursday (library, science experiment, etc.) Friday: Fresh & Fun Friday (Do one of the fun things we’ve found on Pinterest) Sounds easy enough? I also saw one that had Fridays as “Friendly Friday”, with a play date scheduled. But, there’s no reason we can’t combine them both, right? So that’s my goal. I better get to work to put some ideas for each down on paper NOW, so that it doesn’t just stay as a “good idea”! What do you have planned for the summer? What do you to prepare for summer? I know some people who don’t plan a single thing and just let it pan out however it ends up. Then I have other friends who plan each and every day. I don’t think I could take either of these approaches! I think the girls will both do a couple of camps and then I am going to try and stick with something I found on Pinterest (I can feel my husband rolling his eyes at me while I type that out. Pinterest, honey. yes, I love it. Get used to it.) Here’s the thought; maybe you’ve seen it:

y mom, as all our parents do, has taught me so many lessons throughout my long 31 years of life (HA!). There are too many lessons to list, so I thought I would share my top ten with you, in no particular order. I hope it will inspire you to stop and think of how much YOUR mom has taught you and that you will give thanks to her this Mother’s Day.

Be your child’s biggest fan. I remember my mom being at every single event of mine. Every single one. And let me tell you something: I was a busy little girl! I played year-round basketball for 10 years. Yup. If it was Saturday, you knew where to find us. And the amount of tournaments we entered was crazy. And then there were Nationals in Utah one year and Oklahoma the next. I also ran track and played Volleyball for six years each. Then there were award ceremonies, class presentations, fundraisers, dances, field trips, and the list goes on. You would have never known that my mom had a full time job. Or three other kids that she did the same for! And even though, at the time, my mom could be embarrassing and she had the loudest voice in the crowd and carried around a cowbell (oh, yes, she did!), the impact of my mom being my number one cheerleader has had a lifelong effect. As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that not every child has that. And it breaks my heart. If you were to ask me what makes me cry the most in life, my answer would be when I see a parent cheering for their kids. Tears are to be had every time. I love seeing parents love on their kids by cheering for them.
Work Hard. My mom was (and is!) the epitome of a hard worker. She would work long hours during the week, bring work home, go in to work early or on the weekends. There were several reasons. Mostly she wanted to be sure she could make it to all of her kids’ functions. Others were because she loved to work and she can’t handle leaving things unfinished. I can’t even tell you how many times we celebrated my mom getting a raise or a promotion or a bonus. She’s pretty amazing. And the work wasn’t all paid, of course. She would clean the house every week. She was constantly doing laundry; constantly working in the garden. She worked hard. She set a great example of what working hard meant. Along with working hard, she taught me that if I am going to do something, then do it right and do it well. I can only hope to instill this same quality into my kids.

The art of is to teach the art of living to children. Elaine Heffner Family is forever. Put them first. Growing up, I think I remember my mom telling me this more than anything: “Your friends will come and go, but family is always there”. Mostly this was during my rebellious teenage years when I didn’t want to be seen with my parents, let alone choose a camping trip with them over a sleepover at a friend’s house. And as much as I may have brushed that comment off, I hate to admit that she was right again. We all have seasons of friendships. Some may stay in our lives for longer than others and very few will actually be your friends for life, but family doesn’t go anywhere. You can always count on them to be there, no matter what. So you may as well treat them with love and respect. Speaking from experience; your best friend from fourth grade is not likely going to be the first one you call when you wake up at 2am, massively bleeding during your second trimester of pregnancy. So, yeah, I guess she was right.

The key to people’s hearts truly is through food. My mom may have spent a lot of time at work, but she may have easily spent just as much time in the kitchen. She was constantly cooking. She not only made dinner and packed our lunches; she made cookies. Not the simple pre-made cookie dough cookies. But the sugar cookies made from scratch with homemade frosting. In fact I didn’t even know they made such a thing as “frosting in a can” until I moved out of the house! She made lots of goodies, but these are her signature cookies. She would make them for every holiday. Pumpkins for Halloween, each with a unique jack-o-lantern face. Christmas Trees for Christmas, all decorated differently. Hearts for Valentine’s day, each with their own special “conversation” on them or each classmate’s name on them. She made cakes for our birthday. Beautiful cakes. Another thing I didn’t know existed: pre-made cakes bought from a bakery! And not only did she do all the special baking for holidays (which she always over-did!), but she cooked for team dinners galore! And she had three boys… who all played sports too and would have about 15-20 boys over for team dinner… wow do they eat A LOT of food! She also equipped us with snacks for the bus rides to away games. And she knew that the other girls liked her snacks the best, so she always made extra for the team. Lesson to be learned: Give food. As a gift, just because, as an excuse to have people over, for holidays, for special events… whatever the occasion. Everyone loves food. I think the real reason she did it was because she knew our friends may be more likely to hang out at our house if they knew they were going to be fed. This way, she could keep a closer eye on us.
Apologize. Apologies don’t come easy for me. But I have learned through being a parent, how important they are. We, as moms, are not perfect. And when we mess up, we need to apologize. Including to our kids. I remember my mom coming in my room after a fight we had (on multiple occasions, of course) and sitting on my bed, apologizing to me. I realize now, since I’ve had to do that myself, how hard it must have been for her. But I am so thankful that I had that example of a mom who apologized, so that I could know how to do that for my kids.

Be engaged. I don’t think I remember my mom ever doing anything that didn’t involve us kids. We were involved in everything. Even when my parents had friends over or my grandparents came over to play cards, I was always at the table keeping score and watching them play. Even if it was just our tax guy who came over, I would sit out in the kitchen and listen in to the conversation. My mom was completely engaged in our lives. She read to us a lot. Which is probably why I learned how to read at the age of three, and still continue to love to read. I don’t remember my mom having a lot of hobbies that she did without us, but I do know that she has hundreds of books. That was her go-to activity when we went to bed. She would stay up and read. Besides reading, my mom really took time to spend with us. We did a lot of puzzles in our family. We played a LOT of board games. We would go outside and play HORSE with the driveway basketball hoop. We’d go for a walk. She helped with homework. We couldn’t turn anything in without letting her proof read it first. I remember countless mornings hanging out in her bathroom while she curled her hair and gave me my spelling words. Then sending me off to go write every word I missed 20 times. She was fully engaged in every part of our lives. And part of being engaged was being an advocate. There were times when my mom contacted a teacher of mine that I never knew about until long after I graduated. Parents know their children better than anyone, and because of that, we NEED to be the biggest advocates for our kids.
Go to Church. We were at church every Sunday. Rain, snow, sun or power-outage, we were at church. Why is this important? Because it teaches our kids that no matter what your week may have looked like, good or bad, God is always good. He always loves and He always cares. And He needs to be first in our lives. Discipline can sometimes mean doing things you don’t feel like doing. So even if maybe you want to sleep in, church is something we did. Now, even though I have chosen a different branch of Christianity than I grew up with, those values still hold true. Jesus needs to be a HABIT in our lives. We need to be hearing God’s word on a consistent basis so that when we are being attacked spiritually, we can know the never changing attributes of God and know the truth of what God thinks of us, not what others say. Whether you think your kids are paying attention or not, God will be sure that they hear and retain what they need to. Our job as parents is to just get them there and give Him that opportunity to speak to them.

Be Generous. Whether giving of time, talent or money, giving was always a top priority of my mom. She was quick to volunteer for anything and everything. Field trips, bake sales, fundraisers, potlucks, greeters at church, Sunday school teacher, working the concession stands, carpools, keeping score at ball games, food drives, adopt a family, etc. The list could be never ending. I think one of the best things we can teach our children is to be generous. We would talk about tithing when I was growing up, but in our house, that did not just mean giving 10% of your income. It meant more than that. It was giving back your time and your talent to the Lord and using it for His greater good. In the church, in the schools, in your kids’ friends’ lives, in the community, and around the world. My mom was not only a baker, but she was also an artist and often took on simple tasks of making yard sale signs, congratulations banners for anniversaries, weddings, etc. Making backgrounds for school projects, dances and plays. She truly gives out of every area she is able and with every talent she has been given.
Be Kind. I’ve always thought that this lesson came from Ellen DeGeneres, but in truth, it came from my mama. As a huge Ellen fan, I love that she says “Be kind to one another” at the end of every show. Though she may not have kids of her own, she is being a great ‘mom’ to those that look up to her. Teaching your kids kindness is hard, but oh so necessary. Kindness is different from being ‘nice’. Being nice literally means ‘to be pleasant’. You hold the door open for the next person, you smile when someone smiles at you. Kindness, however, comes from the heart. It means being compassionate and having empathy. It means doing things for others without expecting something in return. It’s treating others (and yourself) how you would want to be treated. Seeing others through the eyes of the Lord. My mom had two things she would say a lot to me. The first was “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. We’ve all heard it. But she would remind me of this almost daily if I came home complaining about something or someone. In fact, she still says it to me if she senses I am about to say something not-so-nice about someone. Words are powerful and when you say them aloud, they can do a lot of damage. The other thing she said a lot is “Kill `em with kindness”. I would always groan when she would say this to me after I told her about what someone said to me at school that day, or if I told her that someone was mean to me or left me out at lunch, or didn’t invite me to the birthday party. We’ve all been there. We’ve all had our feelings hurt. But my mom’s response was always the same: Be Kind.

Being a “parent” IS being their best friend. (They just don’t know it yet). You’ve heard the phrase “I’m your parent, not your friend”, right? Well, I’ve never understood that, because to me, they are one in the same. You realize, years later, that not only was your mom not being the “mean” mom by not letting you go to that party when the parents weren’t home, but she was actually being your friend by not letting you do something stupid. Isn’t that what a (true) best friend does? Sees what is going to happen before you do and do her best to keep you from making a stupid choice? And once you have kids of your own, no matter what age you are when that happens, you instantly recognize your mom’s intentions and why she did what she did. And all the drama is gone. You are no longer holding a grudge against her for not letting you wear that tube top to school. You are now looking to her wondering, “How do I keep MY child from wanting to wear a tube top to school?” You are instantly doing all the things your mom did that you hated. Except now, you realize why and you can thank your mom, while assuring your child that “someday you will have children and will finally understand”. So thank you, mom. For all the lessons you taught me intentionally or unintentionally. For being an example of a great mom. For being my best friend. I can only hope to be half the mom you are.

You may very well recognize this gorgeous family! Geoffry Ping and Asia Delzacruz are pediatric dentisits at Wenatchee Pediatric Dentistry. Their family loves to be outside, and especially on the river. Whether it be out on the boat, hanging out on the shore, on the water via skies, tubes, a board... you name it... that is their happy place. They are an amazing family with a huge sense of humor and a lot of fun up their sleeve! They are kind, caring and truly have a passion for the kiddos in our Valley. Geoff and Asia met in dental school at the University of Washington, were married in 2006 and then both went to Pediatric Specialty training at the UW-Yakima program. After spending four years in Yakima, they were excited about the opportunity to return back to Wenatchee, where Geoff grew up, and open their own practice together in 2009. They were able to establish themselves here as being the only trained pediatric dentists in North Central Washington. Increased demand has led them to opening up a second location in Moses Lake in 2013. They now have 3 beatiful children, Jalen (7), Giana (5), and Jameson (2). Asia enjoys helping with various community projects through the Junior Service League and they are also very active in oral health education in day cares, preschools and elementary classrooms throughout the Valley. They are also proud supporters of the Wenatchee WILD and the Walt’s Kid’s club and they love to sponsor baseball, soccer, gymnastics, football and other activities for the kids in our Valley. And we are so lucky to have them! May/June 2015

Meet The Family
When I was little, I dreamed about being: Mom: Not sure I can say I necessarily dreamt about being a dentist, but because my dad was a dental technician, I always played with dental models and wrote “prescriptions” for patients’ dental needs. I always wanted to be a mom. Dad: I wanted to be a firefighter, PE teacher, basketball coach, and a professional hunter. And Batman. I’ve always wanted to be Batman.
Now that we have kids….:
Our favorite family activity is:
Mom: I have many opportunities to practice patience and I have learned to let things go that may have otherwise driven me crazy around the house. Dad: I appreciate what my parents did for us when we were kids. It is NOT easy trying to be a great parent!
Mom: hanging out together by the water, beach or on the boat. Dad: owing snowballs at unsuspecting neighbors. But since mom doesn’t approve, and there’s hardly ever snow… we like to play card games, or hang out on or near the water. And play hide and seek or build forts in the living room
My kid surprise me because she: Mom: pick up on things so quickly. Sometimes when I don’t want them too! Dad: Remember so many things so easily. And they like to hide behind the door and jump out screaming. That’s always a surprise.
Mom (Asia) is the best at: Mom: consoling and making owies better Dad: keeping me and the kids in check with important things…like bathing and bedtime routines… and not sleeping in the forts we made in the living room every night. Dad (Geoff) is the best at: Mom: All the fun stuff! Dad: Coming up with crazy big picture ideas and always finding more to pile on top of our already busy life What’s your secret for balancing it all? Mom: Who said anything about balanced?! A good support system and prioritizing helps keep us sane. Dad: Hahaha! I’m open for suggestions! I guess just trying to take one day at a time, and prioritizing the never ending tasks that need to be tackled. When the kids are all grown, we are going to: Mom: continuously be looking for ways to entice them to come back and visit us. And maybe travel more.

Dad: celebrate with an epic “high five”, sleep through the night, travel a little, and pray for healthy grandkids Something that might surprise you about me is: Mom: I was president of the math team in high school and we traveled to national math competitions. I danced for the Sonics Dance Team, along with my sister, while I was in dental school. Dad: My favorite color is pink. And blue too. I like blue. And I used to work as a deputy sheriff and also a window washer. Oh, and a carpenter apprentice and also a janitor. What I love about our family is: Mom: They are mine and I know them better than anyone! Dad: The never ending entertainment (and challenges) our kids provide

Mom: Be so excited to go to bed! Dad: Be able to function so well on so little sleep Favorite family hang-out in Wenatchee area:
Mom: the summer weather and the feeling of community. Dad: This is God’s country and I feel like I can be in His creation and “away from it all” in a matter of minutes. Water, sun, mountains, and wildlife. And the people here are so genuine and nice. There really isn’t a nicer family/faith-centered community than here in the valley.
Mom: This is so boring, but I honestly love to be at home. We also spend quite a bit of time by the water. Dad: The Columbia River…on or near Our go-to place to eat in Wenatchee: Mom: Red Robin (if the kids have any say), Garlini’s, Shakti’s on date night Dad: Definitely Shakti’s, or Red Robin with the kids. But we love Garlinis, McGlinn’s, Lulu’s, and Matt’s house is always great too. Hi Matt.
My favorite thing about Geoff is: Mom: his sense of humor and business smarts My favorite thing about Asia is: Dad: Her attention to detail and sweet spirit.
If I was stranded on an island with one book and one meal, they would be: Mom: A reference book on natural remedies for ailments and pizza. I am sure we could find some greens to balance out the meal! Dad: I would bring “How to survive on an island” by Sandy Beechcomber. And Pizza. Because pizza is good hot or cold What’s left on your bucket list? Mom: Travel to Italy Dad: wow. I need a bigger bucket. There are so many adventures on my list…most involving the outdoors. And I’d love to invent a cure for dental disease in kids under 5. It breaks my heart treating kids who are suffering from dental disease.

The Truth About Teacher Gifts (and what they really want)
So here’s the thing: I kind of LOVE teachers. I mean, if I had just met you and you told me you are a teacher, my love-o-meter starts going crazy! In fact, if you tell me this over the phone or if I read it on your Facebook page, you can be 100% positive that I am, at that particular moment in time, doing a little jig and letting out a squeal pure joy. I. Love. Teachers. I am pretty sure that while growing up, I spent more time with my teachers than with my friends. I would stay after class, go to school early, skip my recess to be a class helper, eat lunch in their classroom instead of in the cafeteria… the list goes on. As previously mentioned, I love teachers! While I don’t remember my Kindergarten teacher at all, I CAN tell you that my first grade teacher was amazing. And also that I have very limited memory of anything before 5th grade, so the fact that I remember how sweet my first grade teacher, Mrs. Lasater, was, should tell you something. And I remember that the summer after first grade, we wrote to each other (via snail mail!) throughout the entire summer! As I look back on that, I realize now how amazing that was of her! I had a pen pal! This same teacher, when I graduated High School, attended my graduation and gave me the best gift ever. It was a letter, with her thanking me for our relationship and the memories that I gave her, and she included pictures from the year I was in her class. Pictures of us on a field trip, of me being the “rock” in a play we did (about the book,

“Runaway Bunny”), and our class picture. This has all now been lovingly placed into my senior year scrapbook and I just love flipping it open to look at it periodically. I have many “loves” in my life. Actually I am a pretty extreme person and I either love something or I hate it. So, if it’s a part of my life, then I probably love it. Another one of my loves is gift giving. If you are familiar with the 5 love languages by Gary Chapman, you know that gift giving is one of the five love languages (when someone might feel most loved when given a gift). Well, for me, this is one of my favorite ways to SHOW love, but not necessarily receive love. So, I love to give gifts to people I love. I loathe buying gifts for people that are simply “on my list” and rarely do it. I like to be personable. I don’t want to give someone a gift because I have to give them a gift… a gift should mean something. It should have a purpose and it should be given in love. So with the annual Teacher Appreciation Week coming up (May 4-8!), some of you will probably be thinking of ways you can show teachers your appreciation. What do you get the person in your child’s life that quite possibly spends more time with them than you do during any given week? Well, I asked around. And by “around”, I mean I asked local teachers. Who better to tell us what they want, right? Well, the verdict is in and here’s what I learned:

Teachers have a lot of students, and most teachers have been around a while. What does this mean? It means they’ve accumulated a lot of “stuff”, trinkets, knick-knacks, framed photos, candles, coffee mugs, apple themed décor, and crafty projects. And while they are quick to be clear that they so love this stuff, and love watching their school kids give it to them with joy, they have simply run out of room to store it all. So, before you are tempted to buy that cute little # 1 Teacher, apple shaped coffee mug, please take a moment
to consider how many other students over the last 13 years your child’s teacher has taught has also gotten something that is strikingly similar. 13 years multiplied by about 6 mugs a year (I’m probably low-balling that number even!)…. that adds up to 78 coffee mugs! Good heavens, I don’t think I have the space in my cupboard for those… do you? And no matter how much your child’s teacher may love coffee, surely they run the dishwasher at least once a month, right? I don’t think there is a shortage. So what do we do? Uh oh… it sounds like we have to get creative. Creativity and I don’t get along very well. In fact, there is rarely any communication between us! But fear not! For here, my friends, is your answer! They want to know you appreciate them! That’s it. They put a lot of time outside of their classroom time to plan and prepare everything for the year, to find creative ways to teach so that your student learns it faster and will remember it for longer. They plan their lessons out so that they are teaching to all learning styles. They mull over seating charts so that your kids can be socially successful, as well as academically successful. They do this all with love, joy and dedication. Show them that you notice! Here are some great ways to show your love to teachers without breaking the creativity bank!

Send a Card. You don’t have to wait
for Teacher Appreciation Week. You can send it at any time of the year. While this is always my intention, it’s much like a new year’s resolution and doesn’t last too long. So I am grateful for dedicated weeks and days on the calendar that remind me to do so. Teachers love hearing that you get it. You get how much time, effort, and love that they put into your child.

A Gift Card. Now I know this seems like the easy way out and like a thoughtless gift. But this is one of teachers’ most favorite gifts. Why? Because it doesn’t take up space. They don’t have to find any other place for it other than their wallet or purse. And they can use it for whatever they want, whenever they want to. If you want to be sure they use it on themselves and not on school items, consider a coffee card or a gift card to the spa, or a restaurant. If you want them to be able to spend it on their classroom, consider Amazon, Target, Staples, etc. I happen to know that my child’s Kindergarten teacher is moving into a new classroom over the summer. A bigger classroom. She had casually mentioned how empty her room is going to feel once she moves in and that she has an upcoming trip to IKEA and will have to restrain herself from buying like crazy before she actually moves into her room and sees what she needs. So I am planning to give her (spoiler alert if she is reading this!) a gift card to IKEA.

Something Practical. Something they need or that they really like. This may be the hardest if you are not involved in the classroom or do not know them on a personal level. But sometimes just taking a look around their classroom can give you clues, or asking your child what their teacher loves, ask them if they ever have a coffee on their desk, if they have kids, if they are going somewhere for the summer. Often times these bits of information can give us just the clues we need towards a more personal gift. And, while I would never encourage stalking, I have been known at times to casually try to seek someone out on Facebook (crossing my fingers that they have a ‘public’ profile) and browse their timeline and photos for ideas as well. You can often find things out by looking at the different places they’ve “checked into”, pictures of activities they love, etc. And if they happen to have a link to a blog they write… well, let’s just say you know what I’ll be doing until the wee hours of the night…
Time. Sometimes, the gift that is most helpful and appreciated by teachers is simply your time. If you are able, ask your child’s teacher what you can do for them. Whether it is spending time in the classroom, leading story time, passing out snacks, chaperoning for a field trip, passing out wipes before lunch, or making copies. Or even something you can do at home like cutting out shapes, assembling copied booklets, or whatever else it may be… they would love to have your time.
So here’s the thing: Giving gifts is awesome! Teachers are awesome! And the best part is this: the teachers don’t care how much you spend on them! They will tell you that they don’t even need any gifts; that your child IS their gift. But a small gift or word of encouragement is a great pickme-up after a rough day. And trust me; teachers are prone to have them. Especially teachers who have MY children in their classrooms…. (Can I get an AMEN?!)! So write a note with some kind, encouraging and thankful words, lovingly place a

$5 coffee card in it and Voila! You have just taken your child’s teacher out to coffee and given her energy to survive another day with your kid! No need to get all caught up in the competition with the “Pinterest” moms (I can say that because I have been called one!). It doesn’t have to be a Martha Stewart craft or cost a lot of money. It can be free! Just make it from the heart.
A few things to keep in mind: High School Teachers: The older your kids get, the less likely their teacher is to receive a gift. If they are a great teacher, show them with a note and a small gift card. It will be a great surprise to them! Specialty Teachers: Music, Spanish, P.E., Electives, etc. can often be overlooked since your child doesn’t spend as much time with them. Keep them in mind and consider getting something for these hard workers as well. Support Staff: If your kid is always in the nurse’s office or bugging the librarian, why not send them a nice note at the end of the year too? What other teachers or staff are a large part of your child’s school day? I know my daughter has a particular recess teacher she loves! The extra thoughtfulness is always a great surprise and much appreciated!

I used to be smart. I used to be calm, cool, collected. I was in control … then I had kids. In the last four years, I have questioned every belief I’ve had. I’ve even questioned my sanity. And I wouldn’t change a second of it. I entered into this parenting thing with nothing short of arrogance. I was confident to a fault. Looking back, I’d like to go back in time and roll my eyes at myself. I had it all figured out. I knew exactly what I needed to do to take care of any problems that came my way. I was Johnny-on-the-Spot. It all started so well. I quit smoking. We found out my wife was pregnant. And immediately went out and bought a stuffed animal and a bedtime book. I read that book to my wife’s tummy the entire time she was pregnant. (Well, all but three nights, but I digress.) I did all the right things. Then, my wife called out to me one morning. “Honey…I think something’s wrong…”. She had that tone in her voice. If you’ve been married long enough, you know the one. It took me all of one second to go from asleep to standing at attention in the restroom …. where it looked like someone slaughtered a goat. There was so much blood. It took everything I had to hold it together while we got ready and hauled butt to the ER. She wasn’t far enough along to be admitted to the L&D unit, so we weren’t going to get baby-specific care. We were shuffled along to the regular ER. It really felt like “Ooooh…sorry, you’re baby’s not old enough for us to try to save. Please, go have your miscarriage downstairs please.” I know that’s not what they were saying … NOW. But back then, I was losing my mind and just wanted them to do something to save our baby. There was so much about that day that tested my resolve as a parent. But when the ER doctor, who we later found out was the HEAD of the whole freakin’ show down there, looked down there and said, “Wow…that’s a lot of blood.” I almost melted into a puddle of screams on the floor. Suffice it to say, I was knocked down a peg that day.

Then we had the birth, which was a whirlwind of labor and emergency c-section and thirteen hours with no food … just pure adrenalin. Remember when I said I was reading stories to my boy from the day we found out my wife was pregnant? Yeah, that came in handy. I’ve never seen a L&D nurse stand in shock. Literally, her mouth was hanging open. The big moment had arrived, they pulled Little Man out and he was screaming mad. They waved me over and I walked up and looked that little dude in the eye and did the absolute last thing that would ever come across like I knew exactly what I was doing. I said, “Hey, buddy. Glad to finally meet you. How you doing?” He stopped crying and cocked his head at me. That was the last time he cried the entire night. The head nurse just stared at me for a long while before saying, “I’ve been doing this a long time and I’ve never seen that happen before. Ever.” Yeah, I was walking around with the puffed up chest and my peacock feathers in full display. Don’t mess with me, folks. I’M A DAD. Before leaving the hospital, we had to watch a movie about Shaken Baby Syndrome. I watched in horror as they paraded a whole group of deficient parents before our eyes. All of them had killed, or injured their babies so grievously as to require lifetime medical care and all I could do was shake my head. Too bad they weren’t awesome like me. Fast forward a few months. I’m tired. I’m beyond tired. I’m a level of tired I didn’t know existed. Night times were the worst times. Little Man was a night owl to begin with, he would not sleep for more than an hour at a shot before the screaming would begin. Desperately, I clung to the hope that he would go back to sleep quickly, thus letting me get back to sleep quickly. And when he had other plans, desperation welled up in me. For an instant, I looked into the future and all I saw was hell. A long, sleepless, hell. And as he screamed and cried, I checked his diaper, I tried to feed him, I gave him gas medicine, I begged, I pleaded, then I found myself at wits end. And I almost shook the crap out of him. I was close. I looked at my hands in horror as I realized I had become one of those parents from the video. I walked into the other room and cried it out while he screamed in his bedroom. One line kept repeating over and over in my head as I tried to regain composure. “A baby shouldn’t have to suffer a lifelong injury just because they’re having a bad day.” So, I grabbed little man, walked calmly into the kitchen and brewed a pot
of coffee. I surrendered the hope of ever sleeping again and in the process, regained my sanity. It took a three month old to push me to a psychological breaking point that 38 years of my life never could. Sure, I won the battle, but I was fundamentally changed by it. Then, several months later, Little Man fell down in the shower and hit his forehead on the marble tile. It gashed his eyebrow wide open. I went into “Super Dad” mode and got him calmed down as I stopped the bleeding. When everyone was dressed, we drove to the hospital. The entire drive was me running every option through my head. Do I take him to the ER or the Urgent Care Clinic? Who would stitch him up best? What if he had a concussion? Would an Urgent Care Clinic be able to find bleeding in his brain? What if we just got him stitched up and then there was something far more sinister going on? What if we take him to the ER and nothing else is wrong with him? Wouldn’t the ER be overkill? What if the ER is busy? Wouldn’t an Urgent Care Clinic be faster? This storm of self-doubt raged in my mind while my wife and I sang “Itsy Bitsy Spider” about a hundred times trying to keep his spirits up. Once at the ER, I had to hold my son down while they sewed his head shut. The local anesthetic didn’t take and he felt the last two stitches in their entirety. All I wanted to do was punch doctors in their throats and grab my boy and hold him close while grunting in a corner like some primeval super dad. He looked at me wondering why I wouldn’t stop them from hurting him and why I wouldn’t let him see mom. And when we decided it was best for me to quit my job and become a stay-at-home dad? Don’t even get me started on THAT! Before finding my footing, it was a daily battle with indecision as my boys tested my patience, my tolerance, and my very beliefs about what it means to be a good parent, and an involved and caring dad. Dads who change diapers are also changing what it means to be a dad. Long story short, there’s a dozen more stories just like these throughout our short time as parents. My sons test me daily. They are my best/worst mirror. They show me where my warts are but they also show me where the good is. And we focus on that. But make no bones about it… This Takes Guts!

CHEERLEADING Pop Warner Cheer Season
Central Cascade Pop Warner offers a great cheer experience for youth who want to cheer for a team and also participate in exhibitions. Cheerleading is offered to youth ages 5-15. CCPWL offers the opportunity to learn and improve cheer skills and have fun cheering for football players, parents and fans. Cheer runs the same as football season, from August to November. We practice during the week and cheer for games on Saturdays. Uniforms are provided with registration. These include shell, skirt, briefs, poms, and hair bow. The cheerleading squads are assigned to football teams and accompany them to all their home and away games—including postseason play at invitational bowls and regional/national competitions. The cheerleaders cheer during the games and also perform at halftime. Cheerleaders will be placed according to age, experience and the number of girls registering. Team preference and sibling players will be considered in squad placement. Young Filmmakers Camp
August 17-August 21: Land Sea and Water! Film campers are in for a fun and exciting hands-on introduction to the media arts in a beautiful natural setting. Start the week filming around the natural beauty of the Icicle Creek Campus, followed by two days of editing and post production training at the Wenatchee Valley Technical Skills Center. From concept to final cut, young filmmakers will experience each step of the creative process and experiment with new technologies. Campers will learn how to conduct a meaningful interview, handle a camera, set up a shot, record audio, shoot aerials from a drone and even get their feet wet learning the basics of underwater cinematography. And once the footage is all gathered, of course, it all has to be organized and edited. By the end of the week, campers will have planned, shot and edited their own movie and we’ll cap it all off with a family screening complete with popcorn! Summer Symphony Camp
June 21-27. An inspiring and intensive week of orchestral study and performance for young musicians in a spectacular setting. Under the leadership of acclaimed music directors and coaches, this program allows talented young musicians to participate in intermediate and advanced musical studies. Looking for performer’s age 11 to 18 years old who want to develop their musical talent and compete to be the best. The four day camp gives performers an opportunity to work with coaches on perfecting their craft and ultimately competing for a $100 cash prize. Each artist will come to camp with two prepared songs and work each day competing and polishing their skills to culminate to a finale concert that will be voted on by the public. Everything around us was created to have shape, texture, and color. Lines and spots and swirls and patterns… all around us everyday at camp, allowing us to make art that is influenced by and incorporating mother nature herself. We will combine the elements of art with the elements of Earth to innovate and add your own sparkle to nature. Leavenworth Adventure Camp
August 17-21, $300, for kids entering grades 4-7/ This camp is truly an outdoor adventure! Campers will challenge themselves through team building exercises, rock climbing in the stunning Icicle Canyon, stand up paddle boarding along the Icicle River, and mountain biking over some of LEavenworth’s finest trails. Grades 5-7 in May 2015 T-Wave is a Teen Day Camp Program. The Y provides staff leadership and transportation and allows participants to plan their own schedule each week. Participants will experience service learning, team building, budgeting, and varying recreational activities in an environment of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Special Olympics is sport training and competition for individuals (8 years and older) with developmental disabilities. We have competitive Special Olympic sport teams in: Basketball, downhill skiing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, bowling, softball, golf, soccer, swimming,cycling, and track & field. Camp Erin™ Wenatchee is a free, weekend bereavement camp for children and teens ages 6 through 17 who are grieving the death of someone close to them. Partnered and funded in part through a grant provided by The Moyer Foundation. The Moyer Foundation continues to provide a long-term commitment to bring hope and healing to thousands of children each year by offering this camp in select locations across the U.S. Campers participate in fun, traditional camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support, led by Grief Place Support Staff and trained volunteers. Camp Erin is held at Tall Timbers Ranch, near Leavenworth, on a weekend (Friday - Sunday) in late August every year. Registration and intake are required prior to attending. Campers will sleep under the stars, cook a meal over a fire and choose an adventure that matches their interest. Adventure overnights include: rock climbing, biking, canoeing, river rafting, and horses Junior camp: July 5-10, for campers entering grades 4-6. $309. Fun activities include cooking over an open fire, archery, climbing on the rock wall, Giant Swing, horse rides, BMX bikes, hikes, swimming in the river, water slide, arts and crafts, campfires, great friendships, outstanding games and recreation, Bible study, and more. There will be an expanded Nature Program at both camps where we will be learning about God’s marvelous creation. Film Camp 101: July 12-17, for campers entering grades 8-12. $369. This 5-day camp will introduce campers to the process, language, and techniques of filmmaking. Teams of 4-6 participants will write scripts, organize shoots, direct actors, edit video, and produce a short film. Various instructional workshops presented by other young and experienced filmmakers will give campers the skills needed to present their creative work on the screen. The mountain setting of Tall Timber Ranch will provide young filmmakers with the inspiration to create movies in a manner that glorifies God. The week will conclude with a film festival where participants’ families and friends will be able to see the world premieres. Primary Plus Camp: July 12-16, for campers entering grades 2-5. $246. Primary Plus Camp is the beginning of many great memories at Tall Timber. Because this is often a first-time camp experience for many children, there are extra counselors at this short week. The fun activities include Bible times, crafts, nature studies, swim time at the river, horse rides, great games, a cookout, and singing at the campfire. We end with a special picnic program for the folks. Junior High Camp: July 19-25, for campers entering grades 6-8. $369. There will be plenty of thrills at Junior High Camp. You will go on adventures, make loads of new friends, and learn more about Christ. The ropes course, rock wall, giant swing, 1,000’ zip-line, bmx bikes, mountain boards, horse rides, swimming, crafts, and crazy fun await you! This camp is nestled up Chumstick Creek Road in Leavenworth. However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. No need to panic, I just feel that sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults shoud support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), this will explain why I throw in a few every now and then. Events include familyfriendly activities such as a kid’s zone and Dutch oven cook-off, raffle and auction where proceeds will go to support the conservation efforts of American Whitewater. The Wenatchee River Festival reaches out to the public with the goals of increasing awareness of river conservation, access and safety issues in the Pacific Northwest. For some, it may be the only place where they are able to talk about their child and their grief. All comments shared will be kept confidential. There are no fees for membership or to attend the meetings. We have no religious affiliation even though we meet in a church. It can take courage to make it to a meeting, but we encourage you to attend at least three.
