Am I the Only One?

photo taken by CLR Photography

Nikki’s NotE

I am not a huge fan of summer. I would love to just skip summer and go straight to Fall. However, most of my reasons have to do with the fact that I am not a fan of being hot and sticky and the brightness of the sun. My ideal, year-round weather would be about 72 degrees with the sun behind a cloud. Though, regardless of my tendency to whine a lot during summer, there are also a lot of perks of summer. One of my favorites is the relaxed atmosphere. For some, Summer may be a busy time, running kiddos around to every camp in and out of town, participating in everything they can find.

And then, because my husband and I are so bright, we decided that this also sounded like a great time to put our house on the market, buy a “fixer upper” and be homeless for a few months while we renovate it. It sounded like a great idea. Until I find myself not sleeping for a week trying to get my work done, the house ready to sell, complete my volunteer jobs and other obligations.... oh, and then there’s these kids who annoyingly want to eat. All. The. Time. Seriously--didn’t I JUST feed you? Like I’m some chef or something.... So, for the first time in forever (literally), I am counting the days until summer. Hurry, Summer! Come quickly! I’m drowning over here in Spring!

I, however, do the opposite. I run away from the people. We hang out a lot at home. I do art camp with my girls at home. We do Science projects, Summer Bridge books, puzzles, read books, watch movies, play outside, go for walks, swim, etc. Summer is my chance to rid all my obligations and commitments and by the time I get to Fall, I can start with a clean slate. And it’s SO needed. Because, I don’t know if I am the only one, but as the school year gets closer and closer to the end, I find myself drowning in things I need to do.

How to Create Your Own Little Free Library by Lara Krupicka

6

www.ncwkidconnect.com

My family loves to read. And we love sharing great books with others and discovering new reads. So when I heard about the Little Free Library movement, I knew we had to get involved. These small book-filled structures situated along neighborhood sidewalks encourage passers-by to take home any book they fancy and invite them to participate by donating books if they wish. In our case though, we didn’t only want to visit a Little Free Library - we wanted to host one. If you would like to do the same, then read on! Little libraries come in all shapes and sizes. You could put out a plastic container of books with a sign inviting people to take a book. Or, if you have basic construction skills or know someone who does, you could build a wooden library. Just follow these eleven steps.

1.

Decide on a design. What type of roof will your library have? Will the peak face the front or the side? Double door or single? One shelf or two? Do you want to make it in the shape of your favorite object? How much of an overhang will you leave on your roof? This may sound like a lot to consider for such a simple building. However, it all makes a difference when it comes down to construction. Once you have made those decisions, you will want to plot out measurements for each piece of your library - floor, sides, door, window, back, roof. A common finished size for Little Free Libraries is 20” wide x 18” to 28” tall x 12” to 15” deep.

2.

Once your wood is cut, sand it. Start with a rough grade of sandpaper and sand each piece, making passes with increasingly finer grits. Your patrons will appreciate not having their clothing catch on a rough door or splinters in their fingers as they pull a book out.

4.

Paint the library. Before you assemble your building, mark which side of each piece will face inside. Paint those first rather than awkwardly reaching inside a finished library.

Gather materials. You will need:

--5/8” plywood for the structure itself --4” x 4” post for mounting it on --nails or screws --wood glue --caulk --exterior-grade paint --hinges --door handle --acrylic sheet for a window in the door --hook and eye to latch door closed Some library stewards aim for an environmentalfriendly creation by salvaging construction supplies from what they already have.

3.

If you don’t own a saw and can’t borrow one, bring your measurements when you purchase the wood. Many lumber and big box stores will cut to order for free or a nominal fee.

Cut and sand the wood. Measure and mark the dimensions of each piece. Then using a circular or table saw, cut the pieces to size. For the front of your library, you will also need to mark the opening for your door and cut it out. Then, in the piece you removed, you will want to cut the opening for your window. For the window itself, cut a piece of acrylic one inch larger than your opening (to overlap ½” on all sides).

When the paint has dried, flip the pieces over and paint the outside, unless you are painting a special design on the exterior, in which case you should assemble your library before painting the rest.

5.

Assemble your library. Position the sides of your library at the edge of the floor piece, painted sides facing in. Drill pilot holes before nailing or screwing them together. Do this for both sides and back. Then place the front piece with cutout in position and fasten as you did the others. For added stability, you can run a line of wood glue along the edge of each board before fastening.

6.

Attach the window and door. Attach the acrylic sheet to the backside of the door: center the acrylic atop the door interior, insert short screws with washers snug against the edges of the window so that the heads overlap the acrylic to hold it in place.

May/June 2016

7

Fasten the hinges on the door, ensuring it hangs plumb as you do so. Then attach the handle and hook and eye.

7.

Caulk the interior. Run a bead of caulk along all the corners where the sides of your building meet. You may want to leave the edges where the walls meet the floor untouched. In the event that moisture enters your library, it will have a place to escape.

8.

Attach the roof. Match your roof pieces at the peak, measuring for an even overhang on all sides. Clamp in place and fasten as you did the sides. Then caulk inside along all roof and wall joints.

9.

Insert your library post. Dig a posthole approximately two feet deep. Drop in your post. Using a level to position the post upright in all directions, fill halfway with crushed stone followed by sand, tamping down between layers. To make it even sturdier, mix and pour concrete around the base.

10.

8

11.

Host your grand opening! Fill library with books, leaving space for visitors to add their own contributions. Attach a Little Free Library charter sign (obtained through littlefreelibrary.org), if you have one. Then invite your friends and neighbors for an unveiling party! Serving as Little Free Library stewards (as owners are called) can be satisfying for kids and adults alike - watching cars pause in the street to look at your building, receiving messages from friends about the books from your library their kids are reading, venturing out to see what new books have appeared and which ones have been claimed. The few hours of work that go into building one pay off many times over in community interactions and promoting literacy. Looking to grab some books for you and your bookworm(s) in a neighborhood Little Free Library near you? Go to littlefreelibrary.org and click on the map. They certainly aren’t all registered, but it’ll get your literacy party started! And don’t forget to register yours when you’re done building it!!

Mount your library to the post. You could add two angle braces (like those used on mailboxes) for extra support. **Lara Krupicka, along with her husband and daughter, created and

installed a Little Free Library at their home. They love watching books disappear from their library and new ones appearing.

Tips to Keep Summer Relaxed

by Alissa Marquess creativewithkids.com

As the days get longer I begin to get as antsy as the kids for the freedom of summer. I long for the relaxed summer days I loved as a kid. The problem is, sometimes all that freedom turns into frustration and crankiness when nobody knows what’s next and everyone gets bored. Luckily in the past few years I’ve come up with a few ways to let us enjoy freedom, but to keep us from turning into a frustrated grumpy crowd. Here are my top 5 ways to enjoy a relaxed summer with your kids.

May/June 2016

9

1. Have a basic Daily Plan. This is key for making your summer run smoother! Having a basic outline for your days gives you space to live the intention you have for this summer, and helps everyone know what to expect. Look for “way points.” These are the events in the day that get you back on track if your day is feeling wonky: after THIS, then THAT happens. More ideas on making a flelixble routine here. What routines do you have from the school year that already work – wake up routine? afternoon snack? other normal way points? Having a loose framework during your day will help everyone feel more relaxed.

2. Make a low pressure bucket list I don’t want too get to the end of summer and feel crushed that we never made it camping, didn’t visit the creek and missed out on farmers market, but without some sort of list it’s easy to forget. No need to do everything on the list, and no need to pack these items into the first week of summer – but we’ll be able to look at it and aim for doing something each week. I’ll know we’re making memories we’ll treasure when we choose to do something on the list.

3. Outside time every day. Rain or shine, outside play is the key to my kids getting along and me getting along with them. Summer memories are made of the texture of mud, the smell of leaves and the exileration of climbing the tree you couldn’t reach the year before.

4. Alone time, down-time each day. We all need a little time to ourselves, and we all need time to breath when a day’s been busy. You can try a quiet reading time, or a down-time at a regular time each day, maybe have specific toys put aside for that. If you’re more go with the flow you can just anticipate that in the normal rhythm of the day any burst of energy and togetherness will do well to be followed by a breath of calm.

5. Make a Media Plan Put some thought into when you’re ok with the kids doing media and then stick to the plan – they might not like it at first, but they’ll be happier when they know what it is. Some of the things to consider are: Do you want them going outside to play first? When is media most disruptive in your family? When do you as a parent or caregiver want that break that media might give? How will you enforce your rules, and is everyone clear on what the rules are?

Meet the Sandbergs The Sandberg family have been around the Wenatchee Valley for ‘a while’ now. Crystal grew up here, graduation from Eastmont and Jeff’s family moved to the Valley from Yakima after he graduated from high school there.

also volunteers with Awana and other kids’ programs at church and even plays the trumpet on occasion. In her loads of free time, she loves sewing, DIY projects, and enjoying the outdoors.

They have been married for almost 12 years, first meeting at Central Washington University where they both majored in Music Education. To say they are a musical family would be quite an understatement. Jeff is a Music specialist at Clovis Point Intermediate and on staff part time at their home church, Saddlerock EPC, as a musician. He also volunteers with Awana and youth group and is a freelance musician, performing with a varitey of musical group in the area (mainly saxophone, guitar and drums). Since most parents have loads of free time, Jeff likes to spend his reading, doing anything with computers and, of course, making cold-brewed coffee.

Jeff and Crystal traveled to China in 2012 to adopt their son, TonJie and again in 2015 to adopt Ezekiel. TonJie is five years old and attends Pre-K at St. Pauls. He loves trains and numbers and is good at gymnastics, climbing and running. He is fast and very agile and has a quick wit about him.

Crystal is a part time stay at home mom and a part time music teacher at Washington Elementary. She

Ezekiel is two years old and always talking. Ezekiel has albinism, so he lacks pigment in his hair, skin, and eyes. This causes impaired vision and light sensitivity, but you would hardly know it because he gets around just fine. Ezekiel loves books, swings and slides, copying anything that big brother TongJie does, and eating.

The Sandbergs Interview: When I was little, I dreamed about being: Mom: a zookeeper Dad: the usual stuff – being an astronaut, fireman, police officer Now that we have kids….: Mom: I love being a mom even more than I imagined Dad: I want to be home with my family. My kid’s surprise me because they: Mom: they are so different from each other! They each amaze me with how quickly they learn new things. Dad: Learn so fast! Zeke is talking like crazy, and TongJie asks clever questions about Jesus for a kid his age. Our favorite family activity is: Mom: going to parks, going for walks Dad: Going to the park, so Crystal and I can push the kids on the swing while we talk. Mom (Crystal) is the best at: Mom: keeping things organized, such as meal planning, budget, etc. Dad: organization, sewing (she’s so good – and fast, too!), keeping calm… Dad (Jeff) is the best at: Mom: being spontaneous Dad: winding the kids up before bed! What’s your secret for balancing it all? Mom: We don’t necessarily balance it all, but we do try to live as simply as possible and not commit to too many activities Dad: God is a good father. He reminds me more than I remind myself of what’s important. When the kids are all grown, we are going to: Mom: wonder how they grew up so quickly Dad: Do all the things we have had to do in hiding, like eating pie for dinner and late night stops to Dairy Queen! Something that might surprise you about me is: Mom: I‘m a lot less serious than people think Dad: I love theology, and I love trampolines! What I love about our family is: Mom: the people in it! It has been amazing to be a part of our family coming together in the way it has. Dad: we love being together.

12

If I was stranded on an island with one book and one meal, they would be: Mom: the Bible and veggie pizza Dad: a copy of Pilgrim’s Progress and some mac & cheese! What’s left on your bucket list? Mom: I don’t really have a bucket list, but it would be cool to run a marathon someday Dad: Join CrossFit, learn Chinese, and do a professional jazz recording. Before I had kids, I never thought I’d: Mom: Drive an alternative route to get a better view of a train Dad: know the name of EVERY SINGLE ENGINE on Thomas & Friends…and like it! What would you do with the money if you won the lottery? Mom: Maybe add on to our house so we’d have room to adopt another kid or two, then save some for kids’ college. After that, it would be fun to be able to give lots of money to worthy causes to make a difference in people’s lives. Dad: Give to church and missions, update and build on to our house, adopt some more kids, hire a Chinese tutor, join CrossFit, do a recording! Where do you most want to travel, but have never been? Mom: I want to go back to China, even though we’ve already been there Dad: Scotland! Braveheart had me at “hello.”

What one thing would you change if you had to do it over? Mom: I would not have cared what people thought of me Dad: I would have purchased this beautiful Low A Selmer Mark VI alto saxophone instead of my Series III. I’ve regretted that decision almost every day for the past 15 years. … gosh, what a beautiful horn that was. What is the best advice you have received regarding parenting? Mom: Probably the advice I’ve heard the most: enjoy your time with your kids; it goes by way too fast. Dad: Give your wife and kids first priority when you get home from work. If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to? Mom: Back before there was all this technology and life was a slower pace Dad: Creation. I’d love to be a newly-created fly on a newly-created wall! How would your friends describe you? Mom: Calm and laid back, practical Dad: Perfectionist, moody, introspective, humorous Do you have any summer plans in the works yet? Mom: This will be our first full summer together as a family of four. I hope we’ll get to spend a lot of time playing at the river and maybe do some camping.

Dad: Camping, and daily visits to the beach on the loop trail near Walla Walla Park. How do you take your coffee? Mom: I usually prefer tea, but the cold brew coffee that Jeff makes is alright because it doesn’t taste as bitter as regular coffee Dad: Cold brew heated up on the stove with a spoonful of sweetened condensed milk. What apps do you use the most? Mom: Probably our budget app on my iPad. I don’t even have a cell phone! Dad: Evernote, YouTube, Spotify, Kindle, Pinterest, Rosetta Stone Favorite family hang-out in the Valley: Mom: One of the parks (Pioneer, Washington, or Walla Walla seem to be the favorites right now) or Pybus Dad: The swings at Pioneer Park when it’s warm; Starbucks when it’s cold. My favorite thing about Jeff is: Mom: He’s really understanding and never makes me or the kids feel bad for making mistakes. I’ve done some pretty dumb things and he doesn’t even bat an eye! My favorite thing about Crystal is: Dad: She is compassionate, caring and practical.

What has been your biggest challenge/obstacle to overcome? Mom: becoming a parent for the first time was a big challenge. It’s still a challenge, of course, but I love it Dad: Balancing work and family. What does your perfect day look like? Mom:Hiking or doing something outdoors with my family, relaxing at home, then sitting outside by our fire after the kids are in bed Dad: Sunday, April 10th. It was simply delightful.

Just imagine, 65 two and three year olds getting ready for the line up. Kids on balance bikes, smaller two wheel bikes or bikes with training wheels race on the Sprockets course. Don’t miss the opportunity for the parents to race on their kid’s little bikes too!

This event would not be possible without our generous sponsors, donators and over 30 volunteers from our community. Bike n’ Juice is grateful for all the community support since its inception. Proceeds from the event cycle back into the community, supporting local 501c3 non-profits that serve children. Visit www.bikenjuice.com to view the map, sponsors or more information. We have two specific goals for our Theater Camp. One is to provide a theater experience for young people who have developmental disabilities, and the other is to provide camp opportunities for this population. Neither of these exist anywhere on the eastern side of Washington State, and we’ve only been able to identify two similar camps anywhere in the entire United States. The Icicle Players will meet the last full week of June each year, beginning with an orientation meeting on Sunday, and ending with two performances, one on Friday night and one Saturday afternoon. We will be producing Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. in 2016. Camp tuition is $275.00. Some camp scholarships are available - please ask about those if you’re interested. Admission to both performances is by donation. All proceeds go to help support Upper Valley Connection. For more information on Theatre Camp and the Workshop use the form on the Contact Us page of uppervalleyconnection.org, email us at uppervalleyconnection@gmail.com, or call us at (509) 888-4181

DYour ay by Day Calendar Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities. However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. No need to panic, I just feel that sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), this will explain why I throw in a few every now and then. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 30! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Summer. Happy Planning! Take 5: Devotional

I know both how to have a little, and I know how to have a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content—whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. - PHILIPPIANS 4:12 -

The Secret of Contentment

by Amanda Bible Williams SheReadsTruth.com

Imagine you wrote a book about your life—let’s say it’s a spiritual memoir since those are my favorite and, obviously, I’ll want to read it. What would the title be? Would it be something dramatic and decisive, like “Tales of Triumph” or “Leap of Faith”? Or maybe it would follow more along the lines of “Carefully Calculated Efforts” or “Fully Vetted, Risk Averse, Partially Trusting Hop.” (I call dibs on that last one.) I’ve never been much of a leaper myself. I’m actually more of an all-out leap avoider. I like to know where I’m going before I get there. If I sense God calling me to something, my ideal scenario would be to send someone ahead to see what I’m really in for. A faith scout, if you will. Someone to take a look at what’s on the other side and send a postcard back with a full report. Then, I could make a properly educated decision: is it worth the leap or not? If you, too, are a partially-trusting hopper, I have good news! Philippians is essentially that postcard. Paul has gone to that most faithful, gospel-believing, Christtrusting place where so many of us long to go, and he has sent back a letter to describe his panoramic view from the other side of the journey. The end of Philippians is the close of what could, for all Paul knows, be his life’s last letter. He has witnessed firsthand the life-changing power of the gospel and the saving grace of Jesus Christ. He has endured sacrifice, struggle, and suffering. And, as he says in verse 12, he knows how to have a little, and he knows how to have a lot. Sitting in prison at the potential end of it all, Paul delivers his final sentiments with profound joy and certainty: In Christ I have all I need. And, friends, so do you. At the end of a life of audacious faith, the great apostle has two simple goals: to give glory to Christ, and to encourage his brothers and sisters in the gospel. Tucked inside Paul’s beautiful litany of faith is the very verse we Christians like to use and misuse to talk ourselves out of those faith slumps we’ll likely write

about in our book: “I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). Rather than tossing that single line out today and ending this study with a with a “Go get ‘em, Tiger” pat on the back, let’s follow Paul’s lead and zoom out a little. Read verses 1014 again, focusing on the context of verse 13. Notice: Christ’s strength in Paul produces something far richer than achievement; it produces contentment. Christ’s strength in me fuels something far more significant than my best efforts; it fuels my faith. Like Paul, we will know what it is to have a little and what it is to have a lot. Like Paul, our story will include sacrifice, struggle, and suffering. And like him, we have been given profound joy and unending riches in the gospel and glory of Jesus Christ. The God who provided for Paul—and for the church at Philippi, as well as for generation after generation of believers who have come before us—also supplies all our needs “according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). May His strength be our contentment. May His grace fuel our faith. And may the message of our story be simply this: In Christ I have all I need. And, friends, so do you.
