Nikki’s Note As Mother’s Day will be here before we know it, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you my own mom (she hates the term “mother”....!) My mom has been such an encouragement to me in my life and this magazine endevour may have never happened if my mom hadn’t convinced me that it would be “a piece of cake” (what a lie that turned out to be!) As I have become a mother myself, I have come to realize how important it is to be a good mom and looking back, I had (and have) a great role model for what that looks like. I cringe at times, thinking about my own three girls and think about the fact that they are all just as stubborn (or worse!) than I am, so I know that they may not really “like” me until they are 23 years old and won’t appreciate the role of motherhood until they have kids of their own. This could turn out to be a long 20 years ahead of me! No wonder my mom’s hair is gray! This is also why connecting with other moms is so important--so we can support each other and grow gray together! I love you Mom and thank you for everything. I also wanted to thank all of our readers for attending the Family Expo in April. We had a great turnout and everyone seemed to have a blast. We truly hope you found some valuable information and got your kids signed up for some type of summer activity! We look forward to hosting this event again next year. The plans are already in the works for an even better and bigger event. Also, a huge thank you to all of our vendors for entertaining this idea and going along for the ride with me. A special thanks to Dr. Cara’s Children’s Dentistry for sponsoring Reptile Man, and to Academic Toolbox and Wenatchee Pediatric Dentistry for donating raffle prizes!

Adventures in Real Food

by Bethany Byington

Like many other moms, I worry about what my children eat and specifically what is in the food that they eat. However, we live in a time when everyone is always in a hurry and on the go. Food companies know this. This is how they make money. They know that it’s much easier to grab the instant noodles and boxed macaroni and cheese then it is to cook from scratch. Also, kids just go crazy for that instant, prepackaged, and well-preserved stuff. As a busy mom of many kids, each with their own schedules, the quick and easy route was the way I took for a long time. However, the beginning of this year I made a resolution to change the way our family eats for good! I’m not even going to pretend that switching from highly processed food to fresh and whole ingredients was easy or even fun. At one point, my children literally thought I was torturing them with parmesan potato pea puree. Don’t even ask them about the vegetarian cabbage rolls I made them try. And quinoa - they couldn’t even pronounce it, much less want to try it. Yet, try we did, over and over. We tried a great assortment of new recipes and new ways of cooking. While the complaints rolled in at the beginning, the only way to get through it was to keep at it. Knowing nothing about healthier ways to cook and prepare our food, I did what every mom of the 21st century does; I turned to Facebook and Google. It turns out there is quite an array of options to help the busy mom cook healthy. Two of my favorite informational sources were 100 Days of Real Food, and of course Pinterest. The website 100 Days of Real Food is written by an actual mom who also wanted to start her family on a healthy eating quest. This website became my healthy cooking survival guide, complete with a step-by-step process for newbies to healthy eating, recipes, and even meal plans on a budget. The following is a partial list borrowed from the 100 Days of Real Food:

What you can eat:

Whole foods Fruits and veggies Dairy products 100% whole-wheat and whole grains Seafood Locally raised meats Natural sweeteners

What you cannot eat:

No refined grains No refined sweeteners Nothing out of a box, can, bottle, or package that has more than 5 ingredients No deep fried foods No “fast foods”

That list can scare even the most wellintentioned parent. Cooking from scratch definitely takes longer then opening up cans and boxes. However, eating healthy can still be achieved while tight on budget and short on time. Preparing things ahead is the biggest time saver of all. Vegetables for the week’s dinners can be pre-chopped and placed in the fridge for an easy toss and heat kind of weeknight. Many meals can even be made to freeze. Anyone can make eating healthy work for their family. I am no healthy food guru, by any stretch of my imagination. I still have a lot to learn. My children still mostly hate healthy food and crave artificial preservatives. However, little by little, quinoa seed by quinoa seed, I am getting them used to healthy eating.

Camping with Kids

~Do a practice run first! A child’s first camping experience can be super exciting as well as sometimes overwhelming. Don’t drive for hours to find out that your little one has a hard time sleeping in a tent and is up all night. Do a few practice runs in the backyard so your child knows a little of what to expect. ~When you arrive at your site, walk the boundaries with your kids so they won’t wander out of site. If they know their boundaries from the beginning, you can go about setting up camp without worry. ~ Think Simple. Trying to do too much can easily overwhelm everyone. One or two days will suffice. ~ Don’t Stress. Camping with kids almost never goes as planned. Relax. Your attitude will rub off on the kids. ~Just let them play. Plan a lot of down time so your kids can just enjoy being outdoors. Kids require very few things to make them happy. Usually rocks, sticks and dirt suffice. If there is water, even better. Buckets, shovels, balls, frisbees are great to bring along.

Oasis RV Park & Golf Resort Oasis is a great place to get away for the weekend, especially if you are looking for a place nearby or a place you can easily go with a group of friends. Only a short one hour drive to Ephrata, this campground offers mini-golf for the whole family, a nine hole golf course, a swimming pool, a fishing pond and walking trails. There are RV and tent sites, plenty of green grass and play areas/equipment for the kids, showers and flushing toilets. Be sure to wander into town and check out some of the unique shops. Reservations are not required but recommended as they can fill up quickly during the busy summer months. Details: www.oasisrvandgolfcourse.com Full Hook-ups, free wi-fi, and spacious tent sites Rates: $20-$30 Oasis RV Park & Golf Resort, 2541 Basin Street SW Ephrata, WA 98823

~ Consider bringing a potty seat for toddlers. ~Pack fun food items that are not normaly in the house (a small, individual sized box of cereal is WAY more fun!) ~If you have teen or tweens, they are probably more interested in going on walks or bike rides without you. Two way radios are a great way to provide peace of mind if this is something you’ll allow them to do. (and have no cell service)

9 Wallowa Lake State Park, Joseph, OR As a child, my extended family would all make the trek down to Wallowa Lake every summer. My uncles would bring their boats and we spent many hours on the water with our intertubes, water skis and knee boards. (Okay, I never used a knee board, but my older male cousins did). Then we would venture into town and enjoy the bumper boats, miniature golfing, go-karts, etc. We also would rent the paddle boats and have races on the water. Other fun things to do include hiking wilderness trails, horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, fishing, parasailing, shopping, and riding a tramway to the top of one of the mountains (which I have also done!). There is an endless amount for families to enjoy here! Lots of camping spaces—for tents, RVers, Yorks or cabins. Reservations are recommended as they fill up quickly in the summer months. Details: Rates: $21-$38 121 hookup sites, 89 tent sites For information only, call (541) 432-4185 To make reservations, call 1-800-452-5687. 6 miles south of Joseph, OR, about 5.5 hours from Wenatchee.

A Dad’s Perspective <<<

I am married to an incredible woman and I receive daily reminders of this fact. A few weeks ago, she took a day off from work to escort our son’s Cub Scout Pack to Seattle on a train trip. While trying to herd these boys to the right side of the sidewalk to make room for others, she missed seeing a joint between two pieces of concrete. Her foot got wedged in this gap and she found herself attempting to fly. Unfortunately, gravity won the battle and she managed to shove her left arm into the hardened walkway with great force. Rather than ruin the trip for all, she alone was taken to hospital where they x-rayed, scanned, pulled and twisted her left extremity to learn the extent of the damage. During this torture, she refused all but the most basic of pain medication, as she expected to be able to join the boys later in the day and wanted to be coherent. So, a few hours later, she did rejoin the group, her arm now in a sling, her elbow dislocated and only over the counter pain medicine in her system. This is not the first time my wife has proven she is made of the toughest stuff. I remember back to when she spent 36 hours in labor. Because of past back issues, no one dared to give her an epidural. We had talked about avoiding pain medicines, but we had not really planned on it. She fought for the last twelve hours to give birth without the assistance of either pain medication or surgical intervention. She wanted to see this through the way she pictured it in her mind. It was not her idea to go for a surgical birth, but that of the doctor who saw the toll the hours of exertion where taking on the love of my life. When asked if she would agree to this shortcut, my wonderful partner tried to refuse. However, as the hours towered over her, even she began to see the futility of this noble struggle. It was only at 10 in the morning that she finally consented to go into surgery for the birth of our son. Despite this trauma, she pushed herself back to work only six weeks later.

Yes, we are all married to some incredible women. Not only do they endure the pain of birthing children, but the melodramatic turns that these children create for us during our lives. And despite all of these torments, she still puts up with me every day. She responds: AND DON”T YOU FORGET IT!

***Mommy Business*** article and photos by Wendy Lane Hulse

Chasing dreams of owning your own business while also chasing your toddlers? Wondering if it is really realistic to do both? These successful businesswomen mommies offer some tips from the trenches. “My photography business, Truly Me Photography LLC, featured on this month’s cover, celebrates its first year in business this June. I’m completely blown away that I’ve managed to sling my fouryear-old son on one hip and my two-year-old daughter on the other while pursuing my dreams of turning my creative hobby into a business. When I pitched the idea of the business to my husband a year ago, I think I expected him to veto it outright. Instead, he picked up a camera and became my second shooter. Support on the home front makes it possible to balance my family’s needs with the demands of the business but it is still a challenge. I’ve learned a few things this year and I’d like to share. I’ve also gathered the advice of a few of my businesswomen mommy friends in order to offer some pointers as you decide whether or not, and when, to set off on your own adventure.”

{Dare To Dream}

You can't begin to do it unless you first dare to dream it. As mothers, our energy is often entirely devoted to nurturing our children and our marriages. It is easy to forget that our first and foremost obligation is to care for ourselves so that we have something to give to our loved ones. Much as in the airplane example of putting on your own oxygen mask before helping your children put on theirs, we need to pursue our own dreams if we want to teach our children to reach for their own.

{Be Flexible}

Have clients over to your home during nap time. Meet at 3pm on a Saturday when dad or grandma is available to watch the kids. Get a baby sitter. Set up a photo studio in your garage or your parent's basement. Stop working when your kids get home from school and start again at bedtime. Work in the bathroom or between wash and dry cycles if necessary. It can be done, somehow, with some flexibility.

Suzi Graden, CPA, and mother to Colin (4) and Parker (3), says, "As my husband and I

worked through infertility and the adoption process, I worked as an accountant for many years before finally becoming a mother myself. I remember listening to clients' children crying in the background of our phone calls, and thinking that children are unpredictable but that tax deadlines are not. Now I have a whole new level of understanding of the unpredictability and flexibility needed to juggle work and motherhood. I have learned that if I can be flexible with a client’s needs, they are more than happy to accommodate mine. I sometimes tell clients I can meet with them in two weeks, no kids in tow, wearing business attire, or I can meet them tomorrow during nap time in my home and I'll be wearing jeans. I often find that they are more than happy to meet during nap time. However, there are limits to what clients and our children can accommodate. My advice: plan to work as little as your budget will allow including simplifying your budget if need be. You can always choose to work more but you cannot take back this time with your children."

{Get Creative}

Author Ariel Gore, of How To Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead and the Essential Hip Momma writes, "...We've all been conditioned, pressured, and bullied into believing that our creative lives are selfish nonsense. We want to be good, so we put creativity at the end of our to-do lists...No one ever does the last thing on their to-do list...Grab a pen and paper now and write it way up there at the top." Starting a business that allows you to express your own creativity through your work can be empowering.

Amy Edwards, a personal vocal instructor and private contractor

with Columbia River Music Conservatory, and mom to Holly (9 months), says, "It's nice to be able to educate other people's kids as well as my own. Being in business for myself gives me the opportunity to bring Holly to my toddler music classes with me so that I can share my creative musical abilities with her while I work. I love my job! I try out all of my new toddler music on Holly! As for my own vocal performance career, I don't get a lot of time to myself to rehearse anymore so I practice in the shower! I think it is very important to share your own creative outlet with your children."

{Do Your Homework}

I had some notion that the photography business would be demanding in terms of scheduling photo shoots, selecting and editing photos, and continuing with my own education in both photography and editing. I didn't have any grasp at all as to how much time and money were needed to acquire business licenses, purchase and learn how to use an accounting program, invoice clients, do effective marketing, pay taxes and basically all of the business aspects of running a business. It was eye-opening realizing how much of my time would be devoted to business administration rather than photography. Do your homework before you dive in so you have an accurate picture of what it takes to run your own business.

{Family First}

Many moms discover that motherhood changes their business outlook. Rather than striving to be consummate professionals, they seek to effectively balance their performance expectations at work and at home, nurturing their families' needs as first priority.

Jacqueline Thomas, ND (Naturopathic Doctor), owner of Alpine Valley Wellness

Center, and mother of Sophie (2), says, "I wouldn't say my patients come second, but I would say I took my patients from being first to being equal. I will say "no" versus thinking that I can help everyone if I think a patient isn't going to be a good fit in terms of requiring unlimited resources, time, and energy. My husband, Gary Piscopo, who is also a naturopath and my partner in practice, thinks it is a positive thing to set professional limits. I won't compromise on Sophie. I always want to be present with her, fully. I do my charts when she's napping. I have learned that I have to balance my own expectations of excellence in order to be a good doctor who runs a good clinic that helps enough people without trying to save the world."

{Respect Your Limits}

If you are sinking more time and money into your business than you are getting in return, when is it time to call it quits? Before you start your own business, give thorough consideration to the legal, financial, and emotional risks involved. If you discover that you can back off on or close down your business when need be without undue adverse consequences to your personal finances, you are in a good situation to weather the risks. If you give your business your best effort and find that your family's health and happiness is suffering because of it, it is OK to walk away. Know when enough is enough.

Jennifer Osborne, mother to Lucas (3) and Levi (6 months), decided

to close down her home-based business selling Usborne books when she discovered she was pregnant with Levi. Jen says, "You have to periodically reassess your priorities to see if things are still working as well as they should. I got into the book business primarily because I love books and wanted to have a ton of them in the house. I made some money at it, and had a good time meeting other moms. I filled up our house with free books! It was definitely worth it. But I knew how much of my time my newborn would require and I didn't want to worry about organizing book parties and moving inventory once he was born."

{Keep The Faith}

Your business provides a service to others, an adult social outlet for you, and contributes to the community. It is easy to think professional time for moms is somehow "selfish" and unnecessary. Keep the faith that you are being guided into the fulfillment of your own life's purpose. Only you can assess if the timing is right, and whether your business aspirations balance nicely with your family's harmony.

Nikki Cox, owner and editor of NCW Kid Connect magazine,

and mother to Lexi (4 months), Hannah (3), and KaeLee (4), has the following advice to share: “If you feel called to provide a much needed service to your community, maybe you should heed the call. I had been debating about starting NCW Kid Connect after moving here from Yakima where there were two similar publications. My background is in nutrition, so publishing has forced me to grow out of my comfort zone. But I was doing a ton of research about what to do with my own kids and figured I might as well share. Lisa Bradshaw, author of Big Shoes, spoke at my MOPS group about what she calls her Don’t Wait Project. After losing her husband early in life, she began advocating for asking yourself key questions, such as why wait? What’s making you not do it now? Since starting Kid Connect, I’ve had many faith-affirming examples that God is guiding my work. On one such occasion, we were $157 short of our print costs, when an unexpected contributor placed an advertisement for exactly $157. Keep the faith and don’t wait.

{Build A Community}

Turn your competition into comrades. You face the same challenges and share similar passions. Rather than a cut-throat, survival-of-the-fittest competition among you, why not share clients, insights, make referrals to each other when appropriate, and commiserate together over the tough stuff. There is plenty of business to be had by all. Use an abundance mentality rather than an us versus them approach. You may end up creating a fantastic support network in the process, and even a life-long friend or two!

Renell Holve, LMP, owner of

Massage-Zen Wellness Clinic, and mother to Rayanna (15 months), maintains a collegial relationship with other massage therapists, trading massages, business advice, and in some cases even helping other therapists start up their own private practices. “When you start your own business, it is important to understand who you are and who you are not, and to market yourself accordingly. In my own case, I built my reputation on medical massage and discovered my own niche. I’m happy to refer clients looking for a more spa-style massage to other massage therapist colleagues. The best thing that I have done to combine motherhood and business is to move my practice into a basement office in my home. I love being able to nurse my daughter between clients and see her throughout the day. If I weren’t a massage therapist, I think I would become a small business startup advisor.

{Do It Anyway}

Sometimes I feel as if my business is my third baby, compelling me to love and nurture it, providing in return a tremendous sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. Sometimes it cries for too much of my attention, and it doesn't always share nicely with its big brother and sister, but I am grateful to have given it birth and I love watching it grow. Starting a business in today's economy seems as crazy a decision as bringing children into today's world. If it is the right choice for you, do it anyway.

Renell’s Start-Up Business Tips • Don’t overly discount your work or give out coupons. Clients will only come to you when they get a bargain and won’t recognize the full value of the skill you are offering. • Ask for business cards from others rather than giving out your own. Followup with a courtesy e-mail thanking them for the good conversation and letting them know what service you offer. Cards may be stashed away and forgotten but personal contact is remembered. • Give incentives for wordof-mouth referrals. If you reward your best clients for sharing the news with their friends, they will send you other great clients. Be selective in your offerings. Don’t offer referral incentives to clients who no show for appointments or are behind in payments. • Figure out what you love about your business and where your strengths lie. Out-source or refer to others areas of your business you are not interested in doing yourself that may bring you down. May/June 2013

>>> Traditions We have a small summer-kick off party with the kids and their friends. We host a watermelon food fight, squirt guns, water balloons and, of course, a barbeque. ~Erica Hall The kids gather all their paperwork, projects and assignments they’ve done throughout the year, pick out their favorites that they want to keep (we usually limit it to about 20 things), then we have a campfire in the backyard that night and burn the rest of the papers. We roast marshmallows and share memories made over the last year and begin planning our summer fun. ~Tim Watts Glitter Toes! My girls and I always get a pedicure at the end of the last day of school. Such a fun tradition—one they look forward to every year!

End of School Year

We have our children write thank you notes to their teachers and we encourage them to list specific areas in which they learned a lot, or an area the teacher provided extra assistance. It helps them practice gratitude as well as writing. ~Gretchen Holmes

Have the child’s teacher write a note in the book “Oh, the Places You Will Go” by Dr. Suess. Then for graduation, wrap it up and give it to your child. Such a special gift! ~Shirley Merritt

We our kid’s “graduated” from elementary school, we allowed them to pick out some books to purchase for the school library. It makes them feel so grown up when they get to hand the books to the librarian and give back to the “younger” kids. ~Sherri Sutton We take a “last day” of school photo, much like we do on the first day of school. It’s amazing to see just how much they’ve changes in those nine months. ~MaryBeth Sparks We go out to dinner to celebrate, letting the kids decide where to go eat. ~Paul Woods When the kids off the school bus, they come into the house decorated with balloons, a snack bar with their favorite treats, and a gift bag full of fun things and gifts cards to places we plan to go. It’s a fun surprise for the kids as they get clues as to what I have planned for the summer. They especially loved the mouse ears I put in their bags the year we planned our trip to Disneyland! ~Trista Rolland

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day in my family has always been a day spent gardening. We would go to the nursery the day before and pick out a bunch of flowers, then my sister and I would spend the day helping mom plant the garden. Though my mom is gone now, my sister and I still pick out flowers together and go to her grave to plant them for her every year. Stephanie Bolhmann

I help the kids make a video each year for Mother’s Day. They record their thoughts and memories, sing a song, tell her why she is special, etc. They make a giant card or a sign and hold it up during the video then give it to her after she watches it. George Potter

My husband takes the girls out to the yard in the morning and helps them pick flowers to bring back inside for me. Then he makes (and cleans up!) breakfast. We usually go to the park or go for a walk, get some ice cream, go out to dinner and then he is kind enough to do bath time/bed time all by himself for me. Truly a special day where I don’t have to lift a finger! Maria Sheldon The entire family gathers together at my mom’s house. We have a pot luck dinner, play some games, and laugh a LOT! Good times. Melisa Hackman

Father’sDay

We have the traditional barbeque with extended family on father’s day. Michael Adams

We spend the weekend camping at my husband’s favorite campground. Rain or shine, we are there! Barbara Pires We get together with my brother-in-law’s family and all go to a Mariner’s game together to celebrate Father’s Day. Julia Little

Our daughters treat their father to breakfast in bed (though they usually have to send him back to bed so they can do it…. He’s an early riser and they are not…. In fact, it’s more like brunch in bed…haha!) Laurie Adnerson

We have a photo album titled “My dad, my hero” and every year for father’s day, we add pictures from the last year of the kids and their dad and things they did together throughout the year. Knowing this prject is coming each year is also a good motivator to send them on daddy/daughter—father/son “dates” and reminds me to take pictures of them together more often. Karen Kincaid

3 Moms. 3 Sisters. 3 Perspectives. As

Mother’s Day quickly approaches, we stop to enjoy what Motherhood means to us and we evaluate what kind of mom we are and if it fits in line with what we dreamed motherhood to be. Mothers come in all different shapes, sizes, ages, colors, and languages. One thing I think most all moms have in common is mommy guilt. It’s not always in the same form or fashion, but it’s there. For many moms, our work situation may be one of the areas of our mommy guilt. For me personally, I have experienced a full range of situations from working full time to working part time, to working from home and to being a full time stay at home mom. Though I have had struggles, hardships and mommy guilt with each of these scenarios, personally, I think the hardest of them all is working from home. Trying to make any phone calls is near impossible if it is not nap time, and then you feel like you have to whisper because the last thing you want to do is wake them up prematurely! Maybe it will be better when the kids are all in school during the day. It’s funny how people think you have all the time in the world to do anything you need/want to when you stay at home with your kids, but if you are anything like me, you are counting down the days when the last child gets into full day kindergarten. My list of “I’ll have time when the kids start school” has grown to about 3 feet long now. And if you have chosen to homeschool your kids, I have no words of hope for you. I guess your countdown will have an extra 17 years…. God Bless You.

The following three women are mothers. Not just mothers, but also sisters. And they have each found what works for them and how they can best serve their family. Perhaps you can relate to one (or more) of their stories. I have recently ran across a quote by Neil L. Anderson that sums up what motherhood means to me. “Motherhood is not a hobby, it is a calling. It is not something to do if you can squeeze the time in. It is what God gave you the time for.” There are thousands of different ways to be a mother and God has equipt you with the talents and skills necessary (or resources to learn these skills) for what is right for YOU. God did not surround you with other mom’s so that you could compare yourself to them and put yourself down. He surrounded you with other mom’s so that you could be supported and have other moms to bounce ideas off and get advice from. As a mom, I feel like sometimes I specialize in compare and contrast, between myself and other moms. I often think, “oh no, I should be doing what that mom does”, or “why doesn’t that mom loose her temper?” and on and on. As moms, we really need to stop this charade of “Well at least I’m not as bad as that mom” and “That mom seems to have it all together and is way better than I am”. I encourage you to be confident in your parenting and encouraging and supportive to the moms around you. We need each other and we need to stick together. Parenting is a tough job and one that goes unappreciated for many many years. ~Nikki Cox

Shhhh....I have a secret. I am a full time working mom and I am not burden with guilt. In fact, most days I feel like I have won the lottery. Ok, not the financial lottery, but life’s lottery. I have a wonderful husband of 20 years and a phenomenal 4 year old son that makes our family so complete that sometimes I feel giddy. I realize that I’m supposed to say “if I could afford to, I would love to be a stay at home mom”. But it’s just not true. I am not a diehard career driven woman, nor am I the bread winner in our family, although I do contribute significantly to our household income. I just like to work. I enjoy my job. I love being a mother and a wife, but I am better at both of those when I work. I am fortunate to be able to take vacations when I want to, call in sick when my son isn’t feel well, spend an evening out with my husband while my in-laws take care of our little guy, and shop at the department stores of my choice. The down side of this is when I’m at my son’s best friend’s birthday and the mommies are complaining about working or pitying me because I do work. I actually feel bad that I don’t feel bad. The rest of the secret is……I’m not the only one out there. I have several friends that choose to work. I know, how dare we! Trust me, I get that look of you can’t be serious, or that’s terrible that she wouldn’t rather be at home with her child. And I tried for years to feel bad about myself, but my son attends a preschool that we

spent a long time choosing and all three of us love it! We take him to school as late as both our schedules allow for and pick him up as early as either one of us can get there, but this is not done out of guilt, we all love to spend time together. There are days when our son whines about going to preschool, and I do wish those days never happened, but I also wish that he ate his entire dinner before asking for dessert. His teacher sends me pictures of him playing or learning something new and it warms my heart. I love that he is having fun learning with friends and caregivers that absolutely care about him too. Our only child will have the pleasure and privilege of growing up and learning from a conglomerate of people. Is this the best choice or decision? For me, absolutely! It is not the choice that either of my sisters made and I completely respect each of their decisions. I am often on the phone with my youngest sister during the day and I can hear several events occurring in her home at the same time (anything from a little one wanting a meal fixed, to needing Kindle bucks, having her husband pop home for lunch, her youngest creating a new mess to clean, packing up the kids in the car to go and pick up one of the other kids, etc), and that is when I look around my office and appreciate exactly where I am in my life. An “older” first time mom, who loves her child and her husband, and also loves her job. ~Jen Francis

>>> Perspective Growing up my big aspiration in life was to be a stay at home mom. Never in a million years did I think my life would go down the path that it has, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am a working mom of two beautiful girls (ages two and four). My job at a school district allows me to have the flexibility to work 4 days a week, work from home in the evenings and take Fridays off when need be. I also have Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer break to get a taste of the life of a stay at home mom. By the end of the summer of doing daily outings with my girls and engaging in very little adult conversations I am ready to go back to work. Conversely by the end of the school year I am glad I work in the field I do and get to be a stay at home mom all summer.

There are pros and cons to being a working mom. I believe in the benefits of a quality childcare, even at a very young age. My oldest daughter started daycare at 8 weeks old. She has created bonds with peers her age ever since she was in the “infant” room. She and another infant were often found holding hands and seemed to seek each other out to do so. Having the energy to do more than provide dinner, give the girls a bath and get them to bed as well as making this quality bonding time is a negative of being a working mom. By the end of a full day at work it can be challenging to be “fresh” and energetic enough to keep up with a 2 year old and a 4 year old. I admire my older sister, working 5 days a week, a full time working mom. She gets vacation time, but she doesn’t get the entire summer off like I do. That too would be very tough for me.

There are also several pros and cons to being a stay at home mom. Yes, you get to be involved in just about every aspect of your children’s lives. Yes, you get all the snuggles. Stay at home moms are in mommy mode 24 hours a day, with very little breaks. Honestly, I don’t know how my younger sister does it, and she has four kids. Working, having adult interaction, and feeling important in my career keeps me sane. In my opinion, I have the best of both worlds. I get the benefits of being a working mom as well as the benefits of spending large chunks of time of the year being with my girls on a regular basis. Being a full time working mom is demanding. Being a full time stay at home mom is not easy . They are both equally as difficult, but in different ways. I am very thankful to have a nice mix of both. ~Dixie Willwerth

o Me Ph Truly I wake up just as the sun is beaming through my windows. I stretch, take a deep breath and meander into the bathroom and continue to get ready for my day. I ponder all the things I want to accomplish that day and properly place makeup on my face and have my hair done just right………ahhh…. who am I kidding. Although these things sound quite routine, they are just a fantasy to me. I wake up scrambling (any stay at home mom truly knows and understand the phrase ‘hits the ground running’)…. hoping I can shower in time to get my youngest out of her crib. As soon as I turn off the water, I hear her, throw clothes on, by this time my other three kids have already been up for an hour and to my surprise I get to either play referee first thing in the morning or have a huge mess to start off my day. Breakfast, lunch, dressed for school, drop of one at elementary school, another at preschool, then my sanity belt…the gym. It’s my me time. Before I know it now I am off to pick up my preschooler, lunch time, get dinner ready and now time for my oldest to come home from school, dressed in the car ready for dance, then straight to soccer for her and my boy, add T-ball in the mix, along with other volunteer opportunities my husband and I do you can say we are a very busy family. I am often greeted by, “Wow you’ve got your hands full”, “Are they all yours?”, “You are a busy mom” I smile and gracefully nod, as I do not want my kids to think for one minute that they are too much for me or even a burden. It is quite funny to watch my kids as we walk away from someone who has said one of the above comments my three older kids (8,5,3) all roll their eyes and say “they always say that” in unison.

People often think that I am a stay at home mom, my house must be clean all the time, I have tons of time to do everything, and that we must be well off. Although there is no greater joy than being a stay at home mom, there are days when I forget these “joys”. My house is tidy (at times), and there are moments when I have a couple extra minutes (usually to eat), and we are doing ok budgetwise (my kids still have holes in their jeans, and we have student loans to pay) I worry if I am doing enough for them. My sisters have their kids in quality childcare programs, I always question if my kids are where they need to be school wise. They are with me the majority of the time until they start preschool, I just hope that they don’t have to play ‘catch up’ when they start preschool. Do I think that being a stay at home mom is the greatest thing for our family? I can say 100% I wouldn’t want it any other way. I love being able to see every little success, mistake, and milestone that my children make. I love to know that I am doing all I can to raise children that will one day be a vital part in the community. I love to know that when push comes to shove they know that I will be there for them. But most of all I love to know that I am doing my part in making their future brighter for everyone. I know that my kids do not even realize the sacrifice I make for them to be at home, I also realize that it might be many years before they even realize what all I have done. It wasn’t until I was grown, married, and had four kids of my own that I realized the sacrifice that my mother made for my siblings and me.

Why I Do What I Do.... by Sarah Fitzgerald

Last month I spent a day at Wenatchee Valley College talking to middle school students about the reason I am passionate about my job as a recreation coordinator for the City of Wenatchee. At each session, we started out playing a silly game all together and then I posed the question to them, “Besides just having FUN, what are the benefits of playing together?” The crickets would chirp for a moment or two before the answers began.

“Physical fitness!” “Exercise!” Yes, definitely.

“Something to do!” “Laughter.” Absolutely.

“Being together!” “Family time.” Bingo.

Why do we spend time with people we love – our friends and our family? It’s a bonding experience. It’s shared time and focus. It helps weave us together as friends, as families, as neighbors, and as communities. Fun and recreation can break up the daily routine and help facilitate those experiences that are worth remembering. Have you ever played a sport or exercised with someone and found it so much easier to talk to them about any number of things in that moment? Did your family take a vacation together when you were young that will always be a treasured memory? Have you ever felt the rejuvenation of real, deep laughter with a friend? What about the joy of finding an activity that you and your child can enjoy doing together? When our friendships and our family relationships are strong and healthy, our communities also become stronger. There is so much that is essential to build a vibrant, healthy community; infrastructure, jobs, education… But if building a better community was a recipe for a delicious cake, recreation would be the sugar. I am passionate about giving families and friends in our community ways to connect – opportunities to recreate together in ways that are new, convenient, accessible, appealing, productive, and FUN. I’m not in the business of creating more things to add to the busyness. I’m not even in the business of trying to make a profit, and for that I am so grateful. I am in the business of helping people make memories, hopefully making their relationships stronger, and in turn making our community a better place to live.

Parks & Rec <<< I do this by making it possible for a family to sit on a blanket under the stars and laugh together at the showing of a classic movie in the park. I do this by arranging a chance for a father and daughter to go canoeing together on the Columbia River for free. I do this by planning sporting and social events for individuals with special needs so that they can cultivate a new talent or a new friendship in a welcoming environment. Young friendships are born in our summer day camp, memories that will last a lifetime begin in the joyful days at the city pool, families dance together on warm summer evenings at our free Summer Concert Series, or a young boy feels pride in his athletic improvement in our tennis lessons. This list goes on. This is why I do what I do. I do this so that maybe in 30 years there will be a kid who says, “Mom, remember that time went snowshoeing one Saturday morning with Parks & Recreation? That was so much fun. I want to do that kind of thing with my own kids.” And the cycle of continues… “Fitness.” “Something to do.” “Family Time.” Whether it’s with Parks & Recreation, or it’s an annual family camping trip, or even just a game of catch in your backyard, I would encourage you to be intentional about having fun with your friends and family. Use recreation of all types as glue for your relationships. (And as a side note – it doesn’t all need to go perfectly to have a lasting effect. An ideal camping trip can provide laughter for a weekend, or the experience of an excursion gone completely wrong can be a source of laughter for years.) You don’t need Parks and Recreation programs and events to make memories with your family. But I am here, doing what I do, ready to include you anytime. Bike ‘n Juice Festival Little kids riding bikes always sport some of the widest smiles around. And for good reason. Their ability to combine balance, steering and pedaling (or lifting their feet up to glide on a balance bike) is newly acquired, and they feel deservedly triumphant. Kids experience a big “Wow!” factor when moving faster than running, without any help from Mom or Dad. Parents, grandparents and friends can stand back and cheer as the biker’s skills and confidence grow. At the third annual Bike ‘n Juice Festival on June 8th, kids of all ages can show off their clever biking, challenge themselves with an obstacle course and trail races, and be rewarded with treats, games, raffle prizes and plenty of healthy fun. Before the kids race, they can bedeck their bikes with streamers, stickers and cards for their spokes. To match their bold and colorful bikes, the racers can also decorate their helmets and flaunt some seriously fun face paint. No matter the biker’s preferred ride, there’s an event for her/him. Balance bikes, training wheel bikes and small 2 wheel bikes all have their own divisions. The younger kids get to test their cornering skills with a twisty but flat course. Older riders, up to 12 years old, take part in trail races of four distinct lengths (.5km to 3km). They cruise up and down wide trails, under a forest canopy with lupine and balsamroot flowers brightening the edges of the paths. Do parents want to try the obstacle course too? They can, in their own event, but they have to ride kid bikes. After the race, each participant is refueled and satisfied with juice, homemade cookies and a barbeque lunch. What more could one want on a beautiful June weekend? But wait, there’s more. The mission of the Bike ‘n Juice Festival is two-fold. The founders want to promote children’s health through outdoor recreation but also want to promote early childhood development by donating funds to four local schools (Cascade School District’s early childhood grades, Mountain Sprouts Children’s Community, Upper Valley Cooperative Preschool and Upper Valley Christian School). Last year the festivities attracted 99 bikers and raised $1200 for the schools. Please help make this year’s Bike ‘n Juice Festival an even greater success. Bring your family and invite your friends. This event is on Saturday, June 8, from 9-noon at Ski Hill in Leavenworth. Race courses for 2-12 year olds. The entry fee of $15 for the first child, $10 for each additional child, includes the barbeque lunch and a raffle ticket. The Help is about a young white woman in the early 1960s in Mississippi who becomes interested in the plight of the black ladies’ maids that every family has working for them. She writes their stories about mistreatment, abuse and heartbreaks of working in white families’ homes, all just before the Civil Rights revolution. This book is quickly becoming a “classic” and will surely be one that future generations will read in school. A definite must read. You will laugh, you will cry and you will not be able to put it down.

Home Front by Kristin Hannah Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life---children, careers, bills, chores---even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then an unexpected deployment sends Jolene deep into harm’s way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear

and fight a battle of his own---for everything that matters to his family.

Reading Corner Today I will Fly: An Elephant and Piggie Book by Mo Willem. If you have not read any books from this series, you are in for a treat. Some say this is the next Dr. Seuss with the popularity that these books bring to the kids. They are easy enough for beginner readers and fun for parents to read to their kids as well. Simple. Silly. And oh, so fun.

Heat by Mike Lupica Michael Arroyo has a pitching arm that throws serious heat. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family’s escape from Cuba, Michael’s only family is his seventeen-year old brother Carlos. If Social Services hears of their situation, they will be separated in the foster-care system? or worse, sent back to Cuba. Together, the boys carry on alone, dodging bills and anyone who asks too many questions. But then someone wonders how a twelve-year-old boy could possibly throw with as much power as Michael Arroyo throws. With no way to prove his age, no birth certificate, and no parent to fight for his cause, Michael’s secret world is blown wide open, and he discovers that family can come from the most unexpected sources. Chapter book. Recommended for ages 10+

>>> Take 5 It’s quiet in the house. A rare moment. When nap time collides with reading time and I throw on a sweater to escape to the porch. Except the porch is shaded so I crawl onto the walkway to feel the warmth of the sun on my face. I need the air. I need the heat warming my back. I need to feel the cool spring breeze brush my skin. For a moment, in this moment, I can breathe. It’s only a matter of time before life will summon me. Nap time will end or someone will get thirsty. But for a few solitude moments...it’s freedom. It’s rest. And sure enough, I all too soon hear the cry of a babe and motherhood calls me out of the sun and into the house. It may have only lasted a few minutes, but that was all my soul needed to recharge. A gift. A blessing.

Breathe

I often pass up opportunities in my day to take a moment for myself. I see these small chunks of time as an opportunity to fold a load of laundry, scrub a shower, or return a phone call. With so much to do, how could I possibly pass up a few child-free minutes to accomplish a task or two? The past few days weeks I’ve been struggling to keep it together most days. By nightfall, I am broken and beaten and I am anything but pretty to be around. I NEED a break. But there is so much to do. How selfish of me to want to just take a few minutes for myself! But what I realized today, as I felt the suns rays wrap around me, is that I was selfish alright!

I was selfish for thinking that I could do it all. I was selfish for clinging to my pride instead of admitting that I needed help. I was selfish for choosing impatience and frustration and yelling over a few minutes to myself. Even Jesus needed to get away from it all. He hopped in a boat to escape the crowds. He retreated to the garden to be alone and pray. We NEED to take time for ourselves. It is part of who God created us to be. On the seventh day, He rested. Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy. When did we as mothers get the idea that we were exempt from needing rest? So if when you’re feeling tired, and weary, and like you just need a break, take a few minutes to just get away from it all. Better yet, schedule time for yourself before you feel like you’re going to break. Maybe it’s a trip to the gym, lunch with a friend, a drive in the car with the windows down and the music blaring. Maybe it’s just a long, hot shower when you don’t have to rush. Make time for yourself. Take care of yourself. It’s ok. It’s more than ok. It’s what you need. What you’re kids need. When you are well, you are so much more capable to love and serve your family. So get in that boat, mama! Go find yourself a garden to retreat to! Find the air, and breathe.
