What are you Fighting For?

photo taken by CLR Photography

Nikki’s NotE

So I had something else to say to you, but then, tonight, about 12 hours before I send this issue off to the printer, I attended the Third Day concert in Wenatchee. Now, ‘deadline week’ is usually really stressful and filled with late nights and a lot of coffee. Going to a concert the night before an 8am deadline just never happens. But the Lord is good. And He made it happen. He gave me a low-stress week, where everything just fell into place and I was able to work with ease.

While he spoke, I could not stop thinking about friends of mine who are so close to closing their international adoption. They have been fighting for their daughter for months now, without ever even meeting her. And the fight will not end once they are able to bring her home. Oh, how bumpy the road will get. It’s an endless fight; fighting for our kids. But it’s worth it. She is a child of God and she matters. She is worth fighting for. Do you know someone who is in the middle of an adoption? It can be a long rollercoaster ride filled with every emotion in the book. Can you make an extra effort this month to reach out to them? November is National Adoption Month. The wait is hard and the struggle is real, my friends. But children of the Lord are always worth fighting for. Won’t you help them fight? Give them a note of encouragement, a coffee, support their fundraiser, give them a hug, pray for them. God has an army of angels, we need to have an army when we fight, too. This Thanksgiving, I am most thankful for these families who fight for children who have no families. God Bless You.

Well, tonight, one of the things the opening singer spoke about was what is worth fighting for. So often we fight over petty things that don’t even matter. What are you fighting for? I hope it’s your marriage, your family, God... I hope you are fighting for things that matter.

Artwork? by Nikki Cox

I have never been a very sentimental person. I am not the mom that finds an old pacifier and reminisces of the old days, tearing up that my kids are growing older. I have a tendency to get rid of everything. I never use to be like that, but my husband is an over-the-top, throw-away-junkie and he has rubbed off on me over the last 11+ years… As more of our kids are entering school and bringing home loads of artwork, papers, worksheets, etc., I am trying to respect their work and resist the urge to purge (right away, anyway). I have set in system in place that works great for us for how to deal with the clutter! I have a filing crate that sits in the corner of my kitchen counter with a hanging file (or two) for each child. When papers come home, I look at them, admire them, praise my kids and lay it back on the counter. If it is a special piece of artwork or something they are especially proud of, it goes on our display board. Otherwise, I leave it on the counter for a day, and then slip it into that child’s folder in the crate (okay who are we kidding.... I’m a pile girl... my goal is to transfer all papers to their file once a week!). If it is messy work, half done, torn, or crumbled, I quickly and quietly toss it into the recycle bin and place a paper towel over it so they don’t accidently see it later (don’t judge!). If it is too big to be placed in the file folder, I take a picture of it (either by itself or with the child) and it joins its friends in the recycle bin.

November/December 2015

9

At the end of the school year, I take out the file folder for one child at a time and sort it out; a pile of keeps, recycle, and maybes. The most important part of this step is to do this while the child sleeps. Otherwise they will want to keep everything! When my piles are complete, I begin taking the keep pile and put them into page protectors (I buy them in bulk from Costco!). I then put them into binders (also buy in bulk from Costco!). If there is enough room for the “maybes”, then I add them as well. You will have to decide what size of binder you want to start with… I would recommend a 2” binder; however, if you have a hard time throwing things out, you may need to be a 3” person. I print out a simple title page and spine label and slip them in accordingly. Then you must immediately get rid of all evidence that you did not keep all of it. Don’t just put it in the recycle bin, take it out to the big recycle bin outside! When they awake, they will be so impressed and will never notice any of the missing art.

A B

D C G

These binders will be treasured for many years to come! It’s amazing how often they will grab them off the shelf and flip through them (and you, too!) And when they are done with college and get a place of their own, you simply pass them on to your kids and let them store them and gain your bookshelves back! If you are counting the amount of binders you’d have to buy and store, realizing it can be up to 14, and starting to panic over storage space, just simply save less stuff and combine a couple years into each binder. Want to do something other than file it away? Try some of these clever ideas that will really show off your kids’ work!

Boyce Family

L

uke and Mariann Boyce are life time residents of the Valley (Mariann in Wenatchee, Luke in Peshastin). They have only been married about 5 months, but have known each other for 20. Their daughters both have a birthday coming up; Amelia (Mia) will 8 in November and Alexa (Lexi) will be 4 in December. Luke is a Journeyman Plumber, Advocare Independent Distributor, and L-Bow the Clown. He enjoys everything outdoors and currently sings with the Apollo Club. Mariann is a music teacher for Clovis Point Intermediate School in East Wenatchee. She is also a face painter (www.imanewcreation.com), enjoys acting and coaches for StageKids, vocal students and teaches piano. She currently enjoys everything outdoors or anything she can do with the family, loves acting and sings with Village Voices in Leavenworth when she has time. Luke and Mariann met at the Wenatchee Youth Circus where Mariann sang and played the Calliope and Luke did basically everything else, other than the flying trapeze. Their story is a very long story, but, like many others’, it’s filled with a lot of trials and a lot of grace from their families and from the LORD. Amelia is a 2nd grader at Grant Elementary in East Wenatchee. She is a very good artist, has a heart for people, very easy going and loves her sister. Mia’s biological dad, Marlon, lives in town with his wife, Bianca, and 4 boys (Caleb, David, Ethan and baby Kristoff), whom she also adores. Lexi is the resident ‘threenager’. She enjoys anything you are willing to watch her do. She is a good singer, a budding artist and loves her older sister Mia. Their family attends Grace City Church and loves helping out with their events such as the recent Hoedown on the Ave.

When I was little, I dreamed about being: Mom: A singer, music teacher and an actress Dad: An artist, Santa Claus and a logger Now that we have kids….: Mom: I dream even more about music/sing with the children and dream of being a stay-at-home mom Dad: I want to be an honorable husband and father; leading my family to the LORD My kid’s surprise me because they: Mom: are so forgiving and gracious. They also remember/pick-up on EVERYTHING

Dad: remember everything, love helping and I see a lot my traits (good and bad) in them Our favorite family activity is: Mom: Playing/being outdoors with the girls Dad: playing pillow fights, anything outside Mom (Mariann) is the best at: Mom: Staying organized and making each moment more about people than things or goals Dad: Praising God with her voice and starting each day on a positive note.

Dad (Luke) is the best at: Mom: Thinking of things to do with the family and being a constant supporter of doing things in and for the community. Dad: having a heart for people and never giving up or quitting. What’s your secret for balancing it all? Mom: Lots of alone time with God and lots of time with God’s people. Living in community and serving AND lots of SPARK (AdvoCare)! Dad: CHRIST, GRACE.....AdvoCare SPARK

When the kids are all grown, we are going to: Mom: Stay in community (this one or wherever God calls) and being financially free to give back more Dad: We plan to be debt free soon to allow us to give more, be more and do more Something that might surprise you about me is: Mom: I actually LOVE alone time just as much as being on stage as a teacher/actress/singer Dad: I’m pretty serious and emotional

loving “Act Like Men” by James McDonald. and Mariann’s meatloaf! What’s left on your bucket list? Mom: Write more music to finish my CD and have a 5-6 person accapella singing group that sings and leads classes for youth rallies Dad: I’d love to take an entire summer on the road in a camper and hit all 48 states with the family. Jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Quit my day job.

What I love about our family is: Mom: We are all very creative and like to think big even when doing something small. Dad: We cherish the time we have together and we are never bored

Dad: Probably a three-way tie between Smallwood’s Harvest, Walla Walla Point Park and the River and Grandma Pauline’s Lake house in Chelan.

If I was stranded on an island with one book and one meal, they would be: Mom: The Bible & a huge T-Bone steak with eggs and hash browns Dad: Just one book? The Bible for sure – and right now I’m

Our go-to place to eat in the Valley: Mom: Wok-About Grill Dad: Wok-About Grill Our favorite thing about living here: Mom: Outdoors and the arts in the community Dad: the Four Seasons and having family close by

Before I had kids, I never thought I would: Mom: Want and like alone time Dad: See the time fly by so fast or appreciate our own set of parents so much! Favorite family hang-out in the Valley: Mom: Backyard fire pit with family (singing) and fire-grilled chicken AND GRANDMA PAULINE’S LAKE HOUSE in Chelan!!!

My favorite thing about Mariann: Dad: She loves God above all else and values relationships and making moments count. My favorite thing about Luke: Mom: That he never settles for anything less than his best. He is always trying to be better as a man, husband and father by reading, praying, and joining in accountability with other godly men from our home church (Grace City)

Clutter-Free Holiday Gift Giving

by Nikki Cox

Give the gifts they will cherish the most

A

s we rush into the gift giving season, I am not sure about you, but I can easily find myself roaming the aisles of every store in town with no idea of what to get some of the people on my “list”. I have no idea what to get these people that have everything, don’t want anything, and yet, if I were to actually not get anything for them, it would break every unspoken rule and I would be banished forever. Or maybe that’s how it plays out in my head, anyway. Do you ever feel like sometimes you are just buying a gift for someone because you ‘have’ to? Gifts are so much more fun to give when you want to give them! And when the recipient wants the gift you give them! So maybe this year, we can break out of the traditional bubble we’ve been in and try something new.

16

www.ncwkidconnect.com

W

hen you think back to your childhood, your college years, your young adult, pre-kid days, what do you remember the most? You remember the experiences, right? So why not give the gift of EXPERIENCE? How do you give an experience, you ask? Well, let me give you a few examples:

A TRIP

To the Zoo, Museum, or their favorite attraction. You don’t have to go crazy and buy a year’s membership, unless you have a generous budget and/or not too many people on your gift buying list. You can buy a one days pass. Some favorites that are just a drive away include Slidewaters, Silverwoods, Wild Waves, Northewest Trek, Great Wolf Lodge, Triple Play, etc.

SPORT TICKETS

Pro or college, of course, would be amazing: Seahawks, Mariners, WSU, UW…. But did you also know that your local high school sells season passes? They are often called sport passes. You can buy them for a single sport, an all sports pass, for an individual, or for a family. Just call the school’s Athletic Office and they will fill you in on the how-to’s.

Experiences

SUBSCRIPTIONS

This doesn’t just include magazines anymore. With a bit of searching, I bet you could find a subscription for anything they are interested in! Here are a few I bet you know were out there: Netflix, Stitch Fix, Tinker Crate, Doodle Crate, Wine, Geek box, Target beauty box, Phone case of the month, candy club, munch pak, gluten free foods, mix cups (random k-cups), book of the month, Sockscribe Me (Socks), My Princess box… the list literally never ends. If you want a great resource to look at hundreds of options, check out mysubscriptionaddiction. com! Some of these boxes are even as low as $7/month. And most of these have the option of getting it every month, every other month, every three months, etc., which makes it easy to find an option within your budget!

BUCKET LIST ITEM

If you know the recipient well enough, chance are you know some things on their bucket list… swim with the dolphins, climb a mountain, go zip lining, learn to ride a horse, get a tattoo… etc. Often, bucket lists are comprised of things that are either too expensive, take a lot of time, or take a lot of courage. Sometimes it’s even just the simple fact that they don’t want to do it alone. So go with them, be their encouragement, or start a piggy bank fund towards a larger goal! Bonus: When you do something thrilling/fear-conquering with someone, your relationship will grow and you bond will be even stronger!

CONCERT OR SPECIAL EVENT

Check out what’s coming to the Valley (there happens to be a calendar of events conveniently located at the back of the magazine…). If you give this gift to multiple people, you can even get in on the group rate, if one is offered!

DISCOVER PASS

For the family that loves to be outside. For the family that loves to explore. What a great experience gift this is! The best part is they are a very affordable $30! To purchase a discover pass, go to discoverpass.wa.gov

MASSAGE/SPA

A manicure, pedicure or other spa treatment is something that most women don’t purchase for themselves not because it’s necessarily expensive, but when it’s money being spent on themselves, it feels like it’s way too expensive. What would be even better is if you are able to purchase two and join them in the fun. The experience is always better when you do it together!

PLAN A TRIP

Obviously this is a spendy one. But it’s also one they will remember forever. If you can rally others to helping you (siblings for you parents, co-workers for a boss, friends for another friend, church members for a pastor, etc), the financial part won’t be nearly as shocking. Or if you own a vacation rental (lucky you!), consider lending it out for a week. Or gift your adult children a simple weekend away, 2 nights at a hotel (it doesn’t even have to be far away!), while you watch their kids!

November/December 2015

17

Another way to be “crazy” in your gift giving is to give something that won’t make their first thought be “where am I going to put this?” or “Yay. Something else to dust”. How do we give something that is visible and takes up space in a box, but yet, is a clutter-free gift? It’s all in the wrapping. Here are some Clutter free gift ideas and some wrapping magic that will solve all your problems. You are not creative, you say? No need! I have done the work for you. Just read on, my friend.

GIFT CARDS

I know, I know, “Boring” you say. And you feel like you are taking the easy way out. But I assure you, friend, you are most definitely not. You are actually thinking of them. You are respecting their space, their taste and their time. Now, if you give a coffee card to someone who pukes at the smell of it, then that’s a gift giver problem, not a gift problem…! Have a college student on your list? Think of grocery stores, gas cards, car washes, places to eat, movie theater, red box, or coffee. Here are some creative ways to dress up these and other gift card options.

Netflix, Movie Money, Red Box—

.. .Gift Cards

Tape them to candy bars, popcorn, bottle of wine or their favorite pop.

Fast Food or Coffee Cards—get several $5 gift cards and put them into a photo album. Attach the gift card to their favorite treat and put it in a box, then in another box, a bigger box, a bigger box, and so forth. Weight it down with some rocks for a more dramatic effect, or create a scavenger hunt to lead them to it.

Mall/Clothing Store—Hide it in the sleeve or in the

pocket of the most hideous thrift store shirt you can find. Just make sure they eventually find it and don’t think you are pushing your terrible style on them...

Restaurant—pair it with a free babysitting coupon or with a plate of cookies for dessert.

Office/Craft Store—Hide it in a box of crayons, tie it around a bundle of pens or pencils. Spa/Salon—pair it with fuzzy socks, nail polish, lotion, wine or chocolate

iTunes—Pair with earbuds, a portable wireless speaker, or place it inside an empty CD case with a homemade label. Visa/Mastercard/America

Express—I don’t recommend these, personally, because they are prine to hidden fees. One being if you forget how much you have left on the card, you are charged to call and find out. If you want to give these gifts, you are better off giving cash.

Amazon—consider not only an Amazon gift card (which everyone can use!), but maybe a year of Amazon Prime? I am an Amazon Prime member and I can tell you that this perk gets used nearly every day and is worth every penny! 18

CASH

.. .Cash

Cash needs it’s own category. Cash can seem even more impersonable and boring, but it’s the most practical and most likely to get used! Just amp up your creativity in “wrapping” it. Here are some ideas. • Fold it. Get all origami on them and make it something new. There are countless videos online on folding money, believe it or not. YouTube is your friend. • Make a Money Tree • Put the bills inside balloons. Especially great for younger kids; it’s way more fun “opening”. • “Cold Hard Cash”. Fill a container with water, place your money in a ziplock baggie and freeze the water. Once the water is beginning to solidify, insert the baggie into the ice, letting it stick part way out. Patience is a virtue and they will need it to get to this gift! It’s also fun to watch them get impatient and try to bang it out on the sidewalk, run it under hot water, use a blow dryer on it, etc.! • Want your gift to have some weight? Give rolled coins instead of bills. • Place the bills in a picture frame with the words “In case of emergency, break glass” • Give a box of chocolates with money folded up in place of the chocolate. (win win—you get to eat the chocolate before replacing with cash!) • Mix Dollar bills and 100 grand bars and fill an empty 2-liter with them. (you will have to cut the top off, fill it up, then tape the top back on. Simply wrap some ribbon around the bottle to cover up the tape or use a decorative duct tape)

3 Reasons Why Gift Cards Rock

can get them for cheaper than face-value. Be on the look out for groupon deals, gas eYou rewards at Fred Meyer or Safeway, and check out gift card marketplaces like CardPool.com and PlasticJungle.com. This allows the recipient to not only use the card when he/she finds a great deal, but they are actually getting an even better deal!

sales after Christmas are, most of the time, better deals than before Christmas, as eThe retailers are trying to get rid of their overstock before the new year. This just leaves your gift recipient able to get more out of it!

like gift cards! They can buy what they really need, instead of asking for toliet ePeople paper for Christmas. They pack well in a suitcase if the guest has flown from out of state.

They ship well and have no extra postage fees. And they are much preferred over a cheesy, generic gift you bought just because you had no idea what to get them. They care that you cared enough to let them pick it out!

November/December 2015

19

Another Clutter-Free gift idea would be FOOD. Its consumable; no need to store it, no need to dust it, fix it when it breaks, wash it, or figure out who it goes to in your will. Here are some simple food gifts that not cheesy

...Food

CANNED GOODS

If you are not a canner, please do not take this suggestion as trying to become one. Your recipients do not want to be your Guinea Pigs. And this is supposed to be helpful and save you time and money. I do not want you watching canning tutorials for a week, and then slaving away in the kitchen for another week trying to figure it out. Learn this hobby after the holidays. No need to add stress to your holidays! But If you are a canner, then this will be easy-peasy. Some ideas that make great canned gifts are jams, jellies, fruits, veggies, pie filling, applesauce or salsa. Wrap them up with crackers, homemade breads, chips or other item to make a quick gift basket.

CARAMEL CORN

Package up your favorite recipe or give a kit to let them make their own gourmet popcorn. Don’t have a favorite caramel corn recipe. Well you are in for the treat, because I am giving you my family recipe that has been passed on to me. I have only given it out to a couple of people, so you should feel pretty special that I love you so much. Once you try it, you won’t ever try another and you will make this your go-to gift for everyone. Trust me. And shhhhh….. don’t tell my family! (See sidebar for recipe)

JAR/BAG MIXES

Cookies, brownies, cake, or bread mixes in mason jars. Tie it up with a ribbon and a label and call it good! They can whip up a treat anytime (remember to include baking instructions). Some people may just prefer to have the plate of brownies without having to do the work, but also keep in mind that the holiday season can be overloaded with sweets, so this is a great way to save it for a time when their sweet tooth has been itching for a while.

A CANDY BAR

So simple, yet, who is going to turn down chocolate? Just buy King Size Hershey bars, gently pull off the outer paper (not the foil) and replace with your own wrapper that says something like “Wishing you a sweet holiday from the _____ family”.

A JUNK FOOD BASKET

It sounds bad, I know. But it’s always so well received…! You can do homemade treats or store bought. You don’t have to make it all junk— you can include things like dried fruit, mixed nuts, trail mix, popcorn, lemonade drink mixes, and instant via coffees or k-cups. Choose a fun “basket”—a sand pail, a bathroom caddy, a cookie jar, a Rubbermaid container… think of something they will find useful and/or reusable.

FREEZER MEALS

A great gift! Maybe pack them in a small cooler or Rubbermaid container. Be sure to include a recipe with cooking instructions.

Caramel Popcorn 1/2 cup of butter 1 lb of brown sugar 1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 cup karo syrup 1 teas vanilla 2 Gallons of Popcorn (approx. 3 bags of microwavable popcorn)

Combine butter, syrup and sugar and bring to a boil. Take off the stove and add the condensed milk. Slowly bring to a boil (Med/High.) and cook slowly (Med.) to a soft ball stage* (about 5-6 minutes). Add Vanilla and pour over popcorn (Stir as you pour) *Drop small ball into cold water.

A couple of tips to make your first batch easier.. . Make sure you have a very large bowl. Large enough for three bags of popcorn and room to stir. Then add 1/2 a bag of popcorn at a time, while adding a bit of the caramel each time, otherwise, mixing up that much popcorn can get frustrating. Oh, and this makes a LOT of popcorn! It’s gooey, it’s soft and it is delicious! Enjoy!

And then we have “those people” that truly do have everything and don’t want anything because they are just too humble and too selfless. CHARITABLE DONATIONS are a great go-to gift for them. Here are a variety of ways you can hit their sweet spot:

...Charity

• make a donation in their name to their favorite nonprofit • volunteer together • Sponsor a child for a year (through World Vision or Compassion) • Sponsor an orphaned child (allgodschildren. org/sponsor) • Sponsor a local child or family for Christmas. Do it with the gift recipient and decide to give to that family instead of giving gifts to each other. (contact Salvation Army, Serve Wenatchee, Catholic Family Services, or Children’s Home Society for leads) • Make boxes for Operation Christmas Child! (Just remember that box collection week is November 16th-20th. • Other Charitable Community Needs. In the December issue of Wenatchee Business Journal, there will be a “Giving List” that lists needs of different non-profit and charitable organizations in the Valley. Spend the day shopping with your gift recipient for some of these needs and deliver them together. Time together spent helping others is guaranteed for a fabulous, uplifting experience.

Whatever gift you choose this Holiday season, as long as you choose it with love, it will be received with love.

DYour ay by Day Calendar Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities. However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. No need to panic, I just feel that sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults should support. While it is not an inclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), this will explain why I throw in a few every now and then. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 26! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Winter. Happy Planning and Enjoy! Porter

Our meetings provide emotional support and a safe place to express your feelings. You are free to share or just listen, to cry, and even to laugh over happy memories of your child. For some, it may be the only place where they are able to talk about their child and their grief. All comments shared will be kept confidential. There are no fees for membership or to attend the meetings. We have no religious affiliation even though we meet in a church. It can take courage to make it to a meeting, but we encourage you to attend at least three. Take 5 Devotional by Nikki Cox

As a mom of littles, this verse can be so convicting at times. It is easy to think of your kids as ‘gifts from the Lord’ when they are behaving nicely, being polite and, well, sleeping. But sometimes we are harsher on our own children than we are with anyone else’s. It’s easy to be rude to them on a whim, especially when society flings these phrases around: ‘you are not their friend’ or ‘you know you’re parenting correctly if your children hate you’. It’s culturally expected to be annoyed with your kids. But when you step back and change your perspective; when you remember that you have been placed as the ‘foster parent’ of your kids, you realize that the little things matter. The love and kindness and the grace that we can give to our kids matter. Because in the end, our children are not ours. They are a gift from the Lord while we are here on earth. Make the most of your gift; it’s the best you’ll ever get!
