Nikki’s NotE
So Fall is here. Well, it may not be officially here, but I can tell it’s right around the corner! Because our house is now filled with booming noise coming from the crowds on television and 3 little cheerleaders running around saying Go Nikki and her husband Shawn and their Seahawks! It has turned our family’s wardrobe three adorable girls, KaeLee (5), Hannah back to the green and blue team colors. And (4) and Lexi (almost 2) my regular shows get booted because there is football on that needs to be recorded and watched. Don’t get me wrong. I am a fan. A big fan. But maybe not the stereotypical “super fan”. I enjoy “half” watching the games. I can’t just sit down and watch the game (or anything else, really). But I will happily watch from the corner of my eye while I fold laundry, do dishes or play some Frozen on my tablet (yes, I admit, I love me some Frozen. If you haven’t played it and are anti-candy crush because you don’t like to follow the crowd like me, then Frozen is your game. Download it. ) But yesterday, I wandered down to the Farmer’s Market with my kiddos for a much needed break from the house. But, really, I was dying to get down there because for the last month, this day had been circled on my calendar. One of the vendors that day was an out-of-town visitor that owns her little business, The Twinkle Shoppe. She has some adorable necklaces that I just had to have! She makes “Frozen” themed necklaces which I sneakily bought (while my kids were all with me!) for a stocking stuffers in a few months, since I can never start Chirstmas shopping too early! But the main reason I was excited for her return was for her Seahawk necklace. It is adorable! And affordable! So, if you have a moment, you should look her up... on facebook, on etsy... and check out her necklaces! So, today, I humbly admit being “more” of a Seahawk fan today than I was a couple of days ago because I now have this adorable piece of jewlery and want to wear it every day. ...I also think my husband is secretly more attracted to me when I wear it.... ha! If you have a little human in your household that is a big fan, be sure to capture their Seahawk Spirit and enter our Cover Kid Photo Contest! Find the details on page 27 or on our Facebook page. And be sure to follow us on Facebook where will put the top three entries up for YOUR final judging!

Dressing Without Drama by Lara Krupicka
If you’ve ever left the house with a child wearing a super hero cape or princess dress, or if you’ve ever noticed your daughter’s socks don’t match as you’re dropping her at school or realized your son’s shirt was on backwards at the end of the day, you know the challenges of dressing kids. Whether it’s a matter of clothes not matching or convincing your child to bundle up in cold weather, handling wardrobe issues can be sticky. Here’s some advice from moms and experts on how to approach some common childhood “clothing conundrums:”
Mismatched clothes or socks Blame Little Miss Mismatch for the popularity of odd clothing combinations all you like, there’s still the issue of what to do when your child tries to leave the house in plaids and stripes. Shari Braendel, fashion expert and author of Good Girls Don’t Have to Dress Bad, suggests leaving well enough alone. “This is their way of showing individuality. They’re experimenting with their creativity. It may be an attention-getting thing, but
it won’t be attention-getting for long.” Braendel goes on to emphasize as long as doesn’t hurt them, there’s no reason to intervene.
Multiple Wardrobe Changes Kids may go through periods of time where they change what they wear multiple times during the day. It might not seem to be a big deal to anyone but the person who does the laundry. Or it can become a big deal if it prevents them from heading out the door on time. Aside from taking all their clothes away (which may work as a last resort), what’s a parent to do? “Sometimes too much choice can be overwhelming,” says psychologist Dr. Bobbie McDonald. “What I suggest, rather than giving them a completely open choice (or none at all) is to choose two or three outfits and say, ‘It’s cold outside. Here are three outfits choices, or you can mix and match. So which outfit would you like?” Colleen Sall, mother of two elementaryaged children, found a solution in selecting clothes the night before. “The

Lay Out Clothes the Night Before
Taking five minutes to do this will eliminate any last minute frantic complaints about lost or unwashed clothing
Common School Dress Codes: - Skirts and shorts should be fingertip length (when arms are straight at one’s side) - Pants must sit at the waist - Straps should be twofingers wide - No tube tops, halter tops or strapless tops - no bare midriffs or chests - no underwear visible
biggest problem was there hadn’t been any planning in advance to make sure they had everything they wanted to wear to get out the door to school. So there were a lot of last-minute changes going on. That was a problem because everything looked okay and then all of a sudden they’d put on a sock and it had a hole.” Now her children put out their entire outfits before they go to bed. They talk about what activities will be happening and what the weather forecaster calls for the next day. “I give a range of what the temperature is going to be like. They may ask for clarification like, ‘Do I need a coat?’ My daughter doesn’t feel like she’s being bossed around with what to wear. She feels like she’s getting some pretty solid advice. The best part is that it’s become so automatic.”
Clothes that don’t “feel” right Some children have tactile sensitivities that make it hard for them to feel comfortable in certain
8

clothes. The seam on the end of the socks may irritate them, or how a pair of pants rides on their hips. These sensitivities can make it difficult for parents to get them dressed and out the door. But there are ways to overcome this. “Those are real issues,” says Dr. McDonald. “A lot of times parents view that as their child being stubborn or rigid. Everybody is different.” Dr. McDonald recommends taking the child along to try on clothes before buying them. “They can get a sense of whether it feels itchy and scratchy or soft and comfortable. It can really help when it comes time for that child to wear those clothes. Too often what happens is, parents want to buy the clothes, bring them home and the kid should like it. They set themselves up for failure.”
Battles Over Clothing Choices When children are very young, they often have little opinion on what clothes they like. Sometimes they may have a favorite shirt or
dress, but otherwise they wear whatever mom buys. But as children get older and begin to assert their independence there may be a clash of opinions on what clothes are best. This issue happens most often at the clothing store while shopping for clothes. A parent may be used to picking out all the clothes they buy for their child. And one day that child begins to balk at mom’s selections. In turn, parents may object to clothes kids pick due to issues of appropriateness or revealing styles for girls. “It’s a struggle for parents on the whole because a lot of times when a style is ‘in’ it’s tighter fitting, lower cut. You don’t want your kids dressing abnormal. You want them to fit in. But when you have different values of how you want them to dress and the current style does not follow those, it’s very frustrating,” says Melanie Wozniak, mom to three girls and one boy. “You want them to dress like their peers and fit in, but you don’t want to compromise your values.” Wozniak says when her children ask
to buy something she doesn’t care for she redirects them. “I tell them, ‘let’s go look at something else. Let’s find something cuter.’” Braendel suggests preparing before a shopping trip by discussing what they can and can’t wear. Make it clear what clothes you’ll allow. “Agree together ahead of time what the guidelines will be. Then instead of saying ‘you cannot wear this’, tell them what they can wear. Give them really positive things to look for when they shop instead of negative advice.” Braendel notes an important concept when it comes to clothing issues and our children’s appearance, “What they put on is a reflection of who they are on the inside. We need to understand our child is not a reflection of us. We think they are. So we’re the ones who get embarrassed. We just have to get over that.” Dr. McDonald agrees. “It’s important to step past our own ego of what they should look like and let them have that freedom of expression. Because when we give that to them, it gives them a sense of self-confidence and self-empowerment.”
Kids’ Clothing Do’s and Don’ts Don’t: • Buy it if you don’t approve of it • Openly criticize your child’s clothing choices • Say, “you can’t wear that.” Do: • Provide guidelines for selecting clothes • Gently redirect poor decisions Involve kids in clothes shopping • Take kids shopping one at a time

Butcher Paper Table
5 Fun Games to Spark Dinner Time Conversation by Christa Melnyk Hines Finally carved out a night for your family to sit down and eat a meal together? Now that you are all present and accounted for, take time to catch up with each other. If you have trouble getting the conversation rolling, try one of these games. Not only will you make mealtime more entertaining, you’ll also strengthen your relationship with one another.
3) What is your Rose, Thorn and Bud? Many families discuss the ups and downs of the day to get conversation rolling. My 9-year-old son introduced me to this conversation starter: The rose symbolizes the highlight of your day, the thorn is the most frustrating or worst part of the day, and your bud is what you are looking forward to most the next day.
1) Two truths and a false. This game appeals to my kids’ imaginations, and I usually learn something new about their day that they forgot or neglected to tell me. To play, go around the table and take turns sharing two events that happened that day and one that did not. Who can guess which one is false? For example, “I got a B on my spelling test. I saw a goat at school. I sat with Gina at lunch today.”
4.) Conversation in a jar. Karen Conklin, mom of three, ages 9, 7, and 3, created a jar with dinnertime conversation starters on strips of paper.
2) Get creative. Christie Zemencik, a mom of three children, ages 18, 14 and 7, says she covers the table with butcher paper and puts crayons out. “My girls draw or write random things that usually lead to conversations as to why that was on their minds,” she says. You can also let them sit at the table and draw away while final meal preparations are being made. Conversations will be flowing in no time!
5) Table topics. Julie Melchior, a mom of three children, ages 15, 12 and 9, says she purchased a pack of Christmas-themed conversation questions last year. Each night during the holiday season the family selected a card to discuss.
10
www.ncwkidconnect.com
“An example is ‘Name two people that made you smile today and why,” she says. Her children enjoy adding conversation ideas to the jar, too.
“The kids couldn’t wait to sit down and get the cards
Conversation Jars Not sure how to get the family together for a meal? Velazquez offers the following tips: • Try breakfast, lunch or snack time together if dinner won’t work. • Start a tradition. Make Friday night taco night or Sunday spaghetti night. • Get everyone to the table by involving the entire family in meal planning. This will also help kids learn to plan and prepare meals. • Depending on your child’s age, put him in charge of preparing dinner once a week.
passed out,” Melchior says. “It was so interesting for my husband and I to listen to their answers and hear what they remembered from their past holidays. It gave everyone an opportunity to share and listen and we talked about things that probably wouldn’t come up in normal dinner time conversation.” Find Kid Talk: Conversation Cards, Crunch a Color Conversation Starters, Chat Packs or Table Topics at area retailers, book stores or online.
Family Talk is a great conversation starter! You can find them at Hobby Lobby for pretty cheap! They are also great for taking on long road trips!
Why family mealtime matters. “The union of a meal together fosters feelings of warmth, love and belonging,” says Jessica Velazquez, a healthy living director with the YMCA. “It promotes communication between family members and provides an opportunity for parents to give special attention to their kids.” Eating dinner together also provides parents with a valuable opportunity to model basic face-to-face social skills and etiquette. Skills that are increasingly important to develop in an era where much of our children’s communication is conducted through technology.

Halloween Party Games for Teens or Tweens
By Pam Molnar
Go Fishing
H
alloween has always been an exciting holiday for kids. They get dressed up, hang out with friends and know that a simple “Trick or Treat” means free candy. As our kids hit middle school, costumes are no longer cool and their days of trick or treating reluctantly come to an end. In an effort to keep the holiday fun for teens, why not throw a party?
I know what you thinking – “How am I going to come up with entertainment that is not lame and that will keep everyone amused?” Simple! Check out these ten teen approved party games that will challenge, gross out and deliver hours of good times and laughter. But beware, if the kids have too much fun at your party, they will want you to host again next year!
12
www.ncwkidconnect.com
– Fill a small swimming pool with water and live goldfish. On the bottom of the pool, place several marbles. Set as many chairs around the pool as will fit. Ask your guests to sit in the chairs and remove their shoes and socks. That’s right, they are going fishing for marbles with their feet. Add a little fear and anticipation by blindfolding the participants or turning off the lights.
Pumpkin Face –
Have the kids put a layer of Vaseline on their face. Pour several cheeseballs on a long table. On go, each person has to cover their face with cheese balls without using their hands. Set the timer for one minute and the person with the most cheeseballs wins. This is a great photo opportunity!
Plastic Wrap Mummy Race
– Break the group into teams. Choose one person from each team to wrap in plastic wrap (from the neck down). As soon as the mummy is wrapped, the team has to gently lower him to the ground and roll him down the race course.
When he gets to the finish line, you need to stand him back up and completely unwrap him. For a longer race, rewrap the next person and race back down to the other end.
Coins and Crickets –
Fill a large jar (like a sun tea jar) with 20 crickets from the pet store. Place several coins on the bottom of the jar and have each player try to pick up 5 coins. Make it more challenging by having the kids pick up only dimes or choose the winner based on the least amount of money (not coins) collected.
Create a Crime Scene –
Create a bag of things found at a mock crime scene but don’t include obvious murder weapons like knives or rope. Instead, find silly things like an
apple, wooden spoon, stuffed animal, a children’s book and a magnet. Break everyone up into groups of 4 or 5. Each group has to create a crime scene based on the items in the bag and present it to the group. This is a great activity to do while you are serving dinner.
Halloween Egg Hunt –
Fill plastic eggs or plastic pumpkins with candy and hide around the room or outdoors. Take advantage of the early setting sun and search for the eggs with flashlights. Try adding a few tricks instead of treats and fill some of the eggs with worms, crickets or cow eyes from the local butcher shop. (Be sure to open the eggs outside!)
...more ideas continue on page 14
Tired of pizza? Try these dinner options for teen parties. 1. Hot dogs on a stick – Leave the mess outside and let the kids roast their own hotdogs over the fire pit. 2. Taco Bar - Make your own tacos with meat, shells and all the fixings. 3. Spaghetti and Meatballs Whether they like red sauce or plain with butter, pasta is always a hit! 4. Comfort food – Fried or baked chicken, mac and cheese and baked beans. 5. Soup, Salad and Bread sticks - Great make ahead meal that is perfect for a fall evening! 6. Pizza Fondue – Warm pizza sauce in a pot and use pepperoni sticks, mozzarella cheese cubes and bread for dippers. 7. Sliders – Pulled pork, chicken or mini burgers. Serve with a side of coleslaw or fruit salad. 8. Sub Sandwiches and Chips – Order from your favorite deli or make your own, this quick meal is a crowd pleaser! 9. Baked Potato Bar – Serve bakers with sour cream, cheese, bacon, broccoli or chili. Yum! 10. Breakfast for dinner – Serve up trays of breakfast casserole, bacon or silver dollar pancakes.

...continued from page 14
Guess the Candy Bar –
Melt 5 different candy bars in the microwave. Be sure to crush up any large pieces. Place the melted mess inside a clean disposable diaper and place on the table. Have the kids smell or taste what’s in the diaper to determine what candy bar it is.
Fear Factor - Egg Roulette –
Hard boil 12 eggs and let cool in refrigerator. Place eggs on a table in front of your guests. Tell the kids that there is one raw egg among the hardboiled eggs. Challenge them to find it by choosing an egg and smashing it on their forehead. Get your cameras ready. Their expressions will be priceless!
Bubble Gum Pie
– Fill a pie plate with whipped cream and bury a couple pieces of bubble gum inside. Using only their face, the first kid to find the bubble gum, chew it and blow a bubble, wins.
Left, Center, Right –
This is a great way to end the night. LCR is a popular dice game that can be played with any size group. You can either purchase the LCR dice or use regular dice and determine which number is L, C and R. Normally you would play with chips or coins, but since it is Halloween, let’s use candy. Every player starts with three candies. As you roll, the candy goes to the left, right or into a bowl in the center. The winner is the person holding the last piece of candy! * Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mom of two teens and a tween. All of their parties include good food, lots of laughter and of course, games!

5 e k Ta Devotional By Megan Breedlove - www.MannaForMoms.com Yesterday was one of those mornings. Nothing “big” had happened, but every little thing seemed to be getting on my nerves. I was crabby. And to make matters worse, it was Sunday, so we were getting ready for church. So when poor Lindsey came up to me and said hesitantly, “I hope this won’t make you mad, but…would you…would you braid my hair?” I didn’t really want to. I sighed and said ungraciously, “Fine. Come here.” Lindsey handed me the two elastics she’d picked out—lavender, to match her dress— and a brush. I divided her hair into two sections and began to French braid it. And all the while, I was thinking, Nobody cares that Mama hasn’t gotten to eat breakfast yet. Everybody else’s needs come first. Though I remained silent as I worked, my attitude was getting worse and worse, until…. “Thank you for braiding my hair,” Lindsey said humbly. “You’re the best mommy in the world.” “You’re welcome,” I said, graciously this time, because I knew I’d been wrong. I also knew that more conviction was coming, and I was right. “I bet no other mommy would have done it,” Lindsey said gratefully and meekly—and trying to encourage me, of all things. “I bet any other mommy would have said, ‘No. There’s no time’.” “You’re welcome, sweetheart,” I said, and this time I meant it. And I wanted to cry. The sweetness of Lindsey’s spirit yesterday morning—her sweet, giving, generous nature—stood in sharp contrast to the smallness of mine. And I realized not only that I had been very wrong, but that I’m sure glad God has a far better attitude about giving to me than I did about giving to my daughter. God absolutely loves to give to me and to you, His beloved children. He delights in our asking Him for anything we need, from little things like having our hair braided all the way up to big things like…well, maybe that was the big thing. At least it was to Lindsey. And instead
of looking at her request as an opportunity to show how much I love her by cheerfully serving her, I only saw it selfishly, as if my getting to eat breakfast when I wanted to was more important than ministering to her spirit and helping her fulfill her desire to look nice for a special event at church. God, on the other hand, never reacts selfishly when I bring my requests to Him. He never says, “Oh, for goodness’ sake, I’m busy listening to the angels worship Me. Come back later.” He never fulfills my request, all the while making it clear that He doesn’t really want to. Instead, He gives freely, generously, and willingly, and He takes pleasure in doing so. Precious mom, our kids and their requests are not an inconvenience to us. Our children are precious gifts from God, and their requests are God-sponsored opportunities to flood our children’s hearts with love and the sense that they are worth Mommy’s time. We don’t have to be those “any other” mommies Lindsey spoke of. We can be the mommy of our child’s dreams. Responding to our child isn’t an interruption of something more important; it is the more important thing. But do we act like it? I’m ashamed that my answer is “no, not always”. But I’m working on my attitude, especially after yesterday. If you need to join me in working on yours too, I recommend that you listen to Scotty McCreery’s song “Dirty Dishes.” For that matter, this song is worth your time even if you are strong in this area. It’s not an overtly Christian song, but I promise you that there’s nothing offensive in it. The mom in this song has the attitude I want to have. She is grateful for…well, you’ll just have to look it up on youtube! Grateful for opportunities to serve instead of being selfish. That’s where I want to be. I know you do too. Philippians 2:3—Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
ALS: A Real Perspective It’s not just about the Ice Water
By Nikki Cox with excerpt from Bo Stern
Dan Sauve, AKA “Dan The Man”, passed away in April from ALS. He was always the life of the party and an avid Seahawks fan
The Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS has been making its way across the country on Facebook, television, sporting events, schools, hospitals, and just about everywhere. If you have no idea what I am talking about, then I am convinced that you are a Hobbit. Has it gotten your attention yet? Awesome! My congratulations go out to those who started it in honor of Pete Frates of the Boston College Baseball team. Have you participated? Then props to you for spreading the word! Have you donated? Then God Bless You. Really, you are making a difference! Even if it was only $5. When we band together like this, big things happen. Whenever something big like this happens, there are no doubt going to be people who take a negative stance on it. People who are annoyed with these videos clogging up their precious Facebook feed. People who think it is a waste of water when there are people around the world suffering from lack of clean water. People who are against embryonic stem cell research. I get it. There are other problems in the world. But why can’t ALS be in the spotlight for a while? I feel like everyone who voices these concerns has never actually had anyone close to them be diagnosed with ALS. Perhaps you don’t know exactly what it is? For those of you who ask “Why can’t people just donate if they want to donate and move on? Why does it have to be such a big deal?” I couldn’t respond better than this woman, Bo, who recently wrote a blog about her perspective of the ALS ice challenge: “Because here’s the deal: We are in for the fight of our lives with this monster, and the very LAST thing I want is for people to give quietly, anonymously, and then slink away. Raise the roof! Raise a ruckus! Call all sorts of attention to yourself! I will be happy for you and every Facebook like you receive, as you nudge ALS an inch or two closer to the collective public consciousness.”

ALS:: A Real Perspective Bo Stern, author and blogger at www.bostern.com/blog, knows the struggle of ALS all too well. Her husband, Steve, was diagnosed in 2011. She writes about the dark side of this disease and all the struggle that comes with it. Heartbreaking. It’s really the only word I can describe it. My uncle Danny (pictured on page 15) was diagnosed with this horrible disease and lost the battle less than two years later. He lived with it just long enough to see his beloved team, the Seahawks, win the Superbowl. It was pretty incredible, really. He wasn’t able to celebrate or cheer them on as he normally would be able to, but you can bet your last dollar his eyes were sparkling! You see, ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is called MND (motor neuron disease) in other countries and often Lou Gehrig’s disease in America. Those who suffer with ALS, experience the steady paralysis of all muscles until finally only their eyes and brain function. Little is known about ALS. There is This is my family last September walking for Team Goof, in honor of my uncle Danny, in the Walk to Defeat ALS. We will walk again, on September 20th in the Tric-Cities walk, though this year will be “in memory of” instead of “in honor of”. There is also a walk in Yakma on September 27th. If you would like more information on these or other scheduled walks (or how to start one in Wenatchee!), please visit www.WalktoDefeatALS.org

no cure and the cause is not yet known. The life expectancy for people who have the disorder, which is about 30,000 Americans, is two to five years from the time they are diagnosed. Bo, later in her blog post, wrote about what it is like to live with ALS and how we can try to relate to those suffering. She says it best, so in her own words, I would like to share that excerpt.
A Mile in ALS Shoes
People ask me often what it’s like to live with ALS. It’s a brave question because the answers are not very pleasant. But it’s also such a worthy question because understanding how this disease impacts those who suffer from it creates empathy which is so valuable; it carries us into another person’s world and allows us to understand what they’re feeling and how they’re hurting. As I watch my strong husband struggle with things that used to be easy and automatic, I sometimes wish that everyone could see life from his perspective.
1.
Pick up a 10-pound weight. Now imagine it’s your fork and move it from your plate to your mouth repeatedly without shaking.
2.
Sit in a chair for just 15 minutes moving nothing but your eyes. Nothing. No speaking, no scratching your nose, no shifting your weight, no changing the channel on the television, no computer work. Only your eyes. As you sit, imagine: this is your life. Your only life.
3.
Borrow a wheelchair or power scooter and try to maneuver quickly through the aisles at Walmart, without speaking. Note the way people react to you.
4.
Strap 25 pounds to your forearm. Now, adjust your rearview mirror.
5.
Using none of your own muscles, have your spouse or child or friend get you dressed and brush your teeth. Write down some of the feelings you have being cared for in this way.
6.
Before you eat your next meal, take a good, long look at the food. Inhale deeply and appreciate the aroma. Now, imagine never being able to taste that – or any other food – for the rest of your life.
7. Put two large marshmallows in your mouth and have a conversation with your friends. How many times must you repeat yourself? How does this make you feel? 8.
Go to bed and stay in one position for as long as you possibly can, moving nothing.
9.
Strap weights to your ankles and climb a flight of stairs, taking two at a time. That’s the kind of strength it takes for someone with ALS to tackle the stairs on a good day.
10.
Install a text-to-speech app on your phone or iPad and use it exclusively to communicate for one day.
Perhaps beyond the ice bucket challenge, you could pick a few activities from the list and try them out. Maybe, just maybe, you will have a deeper understanding of what it means to live with ALS. Maybe then, you will form some empathy to these families and will stand with them and for them and join together to raise funds to find a cure for ALS. It is about time it is out in the spotlight and that awareness spreads about this silent, deadly disease. I urge you, keep “liking” those ice bucket challenge videos. Keep spreading the word. And please, give what you can. The thing is, it’s not just about dumping ice water on your head. There are real people behind the challenge. And the fact is, this challenge IS working. And while dumping water on your head will not find a cure for ALS, we are currently over 40 million dollars closer to finding one because of it. And millions of people who knew nothing about ALS now at least know something. And that is incredible.
So dump on, my friends. Dump on.
Ho w Y ou C an He l p
If you would like to experience just a tiny corner of an ALS life, I have a list of Empathetic Experiences for you. These are things you can do to walk for just a mile in ALS shoes. If you try one, take a little time at the end to consider that people actually living with the disease have a million miles more to go.
If it is embryonic stem cell research that scares you away, I urge you to do your research and not just use it as an excuse. Though Adult stem cell research is primarily the research funded through www.ALSA. org, there are a few studies being done that involve embryonic stem cells, which could be a moral dilemma for you. However, you are able to designate your donation to a study with no stem cells by putting “no stem cell research” on your donation to the ALSA or you can donate to another ALS foundation that does not fund those projects. A popular one is Team Gleason project. (www.teamgleason.org) . There is also www.als.net, which only uses adult stem cells. Another option you have is to fund a family living with ALS and help them pay bills, buy necessary equipment, provide caregivers, etc. A couple of websites that can direct you to this if you don’t know a family personally is: www.ccals.org/home. php or www.theangelfund.org. Meet The Family
The Hawkins Family This.
They live in East Wenatchee and they LOVE the Valley! They live here the majority of the year, but also go to Olympia for the legislative session each year while Brad works in the House of Representatives. Yes, Brad was elected as State Representative of our 12th district in 2012 and has enjoyed serving the community in this way. His favorite way to spend any free time he has is with his family and friends, walking the family dog, Bailey, and exercising. He has always loved sports and running, completing marathons in his high school and college days. Brad and his wife, Shawna, were both raised here in the Wenatchee Valley. They met one night after a WHS football game at Baskin Robbins. Later, they both ended up going to Central Washington State University, where they began dating. After some long-distance dating while Brad was in DC getting his Masters, they married in 2002. Shawna worked as an elementary teacher in the Wenatchee School District before

This fa mily is truly a blessing to our Valley and watching their fa mily dyna mic is always so fun and genuine. This is the Hawkins fa mily. she became a stay at home mom to their two sons, Luke and Tyler. Shawna had been very active in Community Theater, playing roles as Sandy in Grease and Belle in Beauty and the Beast with Music Theatre of Wenatchee and she someday hopes to grace the stage again, with her sons in tow. Right now, though, Shawna enjoys being at home with her boys, taking photos, attending MOPS, and going to yoga classes when she gets the chance. Brad and Shawna have two energetic boys, Luke, who is six and a half and Tyler, who is five. Luke is a born athlete who loves every sport imaginable and is as competitive as they come. He has an empathetic heart and truly cares about others in need. Tyler is a performer and loves to dress up and be the center of attention. He loves super heroes and animals and his favorite thing to do is to have family movie nights and eat popcorn.
When I was little, I dreamed about being: Mom: A teacher and a famous singer/dancer/actress. I loved to put on shows and tell my brother what to do...in a loving way of course...! Dad: When I was young, I dreamed of being an astronaut because my mother said, “Bradley, when you grow up, you can do anything you want.” I asked if I could even be an astronaut and she said, “You can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough.” Now that we have kids….: Mom: My teaching and performing dreams have been replaced by puppet shows, character voices for read alouds, homemade science experiments, and dance parties in the kitchen. Dad: I’ve been able to watch lots of fun kids movies. My favorites include Cars, Planes, Rio, and Despicable Me 2. My kids surprise me because they: Mom: ...are so active! I can’t believe how busy they are all day long without wanting any sort of rest. I always say that I wish God gave Moms an extra dose of energy with each child! Dad: ...are so very different. Luke wants to compete in everything and Tyler enjoys the laid-back life. Our favorite family activity is: Mom: We love our family movie nights and summer vacations to Chelan. Dad: Family movie nights where we all squeeze onto one couch and enjoy popcorn.
Dad: She’s great at many things and she’s especially good at remembering important occasions and making them special. Dad (Brad) is the best at: Mom: Playing sports games with the kids outside--no matter what the weather is! Dad: Offering suggestions of how to fix situations (even when not asked for advice). What’s your secret for balancing it all? Mom: I have an awesome husband who supports and helps me and an amazing God who I can turn to anytime I am feeling stressed! Dad: Compartmentalizing my life between work, public service, and family time. When the kids are all grown, we are going to: Mom: Miss them when they move out! How can they be school-aged already? We will love spending winters somewhere warm and doing some fun little trips together. Dad: Be snowbirds and enjoy warm winters. Something that might surprise you about me is: Mom: I swam with sharks in the ocean on our honeymoon. I can’t believe it myself. Dad: I am a huge Neil Diamond fan and have seen him in concert twice. Shawna took me to one of the concerts as a surprise anniversary gift. He was awesome!
Mom (Shawna) is the best at: Mom: Reading stories to the kids at bedtime.

What I love about our family is: Mom: How much we love being together. We are really close and not afraid to let each other know how much we appreciate and love one another. Dad: We really enjoy our family time together and make it a priority. What’s left on your bucket list? Mom: Ever since I was little, I have wanted to hug a baby orangutan or chimpanzee. Weird, but true! Dad: Visiting Maine and Mt. Rushmore. Before I had kids, I never thought I’d: Mom: Love naps so much! Dad: Feel so old at 38. I still don’t think I’m old, but my kids think 38 is ancient.
October 25, 2014 “Make A Difference Day”
Favorite family hang out in Wenatchee area: Mom: I really love Confluence Park. The boys have so much fun in the sand and water and I love watching them play. Dad: We really enjoy our local parks and trails.
Drop Off Locations:
Our go-to place to eat in Wenatchee: Mom: We love Casa Tapatia! We used to go there so much before we had kids that we got to know the sweet owner, Hilda, really well. Now we try and go every Sunday after church on our family day. Dad: Casa Tapatia. I could eat Mexican food every day of my life. Our favorite thing about living here is: Mom: I love how beautiful the valley is and how everywhere you go, you are greeted by kindness and smiles. I also love having my family and friends here. Dad: We have many favorite things about living here, but one that I enjoy most is the scenery. In the Wenatchee Valley and throughout our region, it seems like there is a beautiful view everywhere you go. My favorite thing about Brad is: Mom: I am so blessed to have a husband that makes our family his priority. He has a lot of work responsibilities, but through it all, he puts us first and lets us know how much he loves and appreciates us. My favorite thing about Shawna is: Dad: ...that she is an awesome wife, mom, and best friend. Our lives are very busy but she works very hard as a stay-at-home Super Mom to provide a good upbringing for our kids.

Lice Intervention:
As back to school season is in full throttle and having my oldest entering the “real world” (aka, public school), there has always been a fear of the day my kid comes home with head lice. It makes me shudder just thinking about the (very real) possibility.
A couple of weeks ago, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and came across a question that someone had posted. “Would you rather your household get the stomache flu or head lice?” For me, that was, hands down, the easiest question to answer. The stomache flu! And as I scrolled through the many, many responses, I wondered how many of these people who had answered the same as I have (which was most of them!) had actually had head lice in their household. I haven’t. And maybe the people who responded with head lice had actually had it. And just maybe, it’s not as scary as I make it out to be? So I decided seek some answers to all my questions and gain some insight from Risa Barash, a lice expert and co-founder of Fairy Tales Hair Care. Please join us in our
A real conversation with a head lice expert by Nikki Cox
conversation as we learn about lice and, hopefully, end our conversation with confidence in knowing what it is, how to deal with it and how to keep our cool when it comes around.
What are lice?
Lice are a human parasite that needs human blood to survive. They live on the scalp because it is warm and humid. They are small, about the size of a sesame seed and can live on the head for 30 days. They can lay about 8 eggs (or nits) per day. Nits are small, yellowish, brown sacs usually found stuck on an angle to the hair shaft about 1/4 - 1/2 inch from the scalp. Once hatched, they migrate to the scalp to feed. In 9-10 days, they begin laying their own eggs. Lice are not dangerous and don’t spread disease, but they are contagious and bothersome. Their bites can cause a child’s scalp to become itchy and irritated. Unless treated, persistent scratching can cause infection.
September/October 2014
23
How does it spread? Can it really jump?
Lice are mostly spread through head to head contact. They can also be transmitted by sharing personal items such as hats, helmets, brushes, combs, hair ties, towels and headphones. They do not fly or jump, they crawl.
How common is it? Am I am “bad parent” if my child gets lice? Is it something I did? Lice are a common occurrence with 12-15 million cases reported each year. They infest regardless of social status and personal hygiene. In fact they prefer CLEAN hair, as it’s easier to attach to an uncoated hair shaft.
What product should I use to get rid of the lice?
Lice Good-Bye® natural treatment is free of harsh chemicals and pesticides. It is safe, easy and clinically proven. It is 100% guaranteed to eliminate lice and nits when used with Fairy Tales Terminator Nit-Free Comb.
Are there products I should use to prevent lice if I know it has been found in a child at school?
We advise parents to add a layer of protection every day before school, day care or camp. A spray a day keeps the lice away with Rosemary Repel® Conditioning Spray. Be sure to focus on the hot spots - behind the ears and at the base of the neck. Spray backpacks, coats and hats, too.
Use lice prevention hair care products every day! Organic herbs such as rosemary, tea tree and citronella found in Rosemary Repel® Hair Care are proven safe and effective to prevent head lice.
Also, teach children not to share hats, combs, brushes, hair ties, etc. And keep long hair up in a ponytail or a braid. At school, day care or camp kids should store jackets, backpacks and hats in separate cubbies. At naptime, teach kids not to share mat or pillow.
Rosemary Repel® is the daily choice of hair care for families since 1999 to help prevent lice naturally. Quality professional haircare gently cleanses, nourishes and conditions -- and the bonus: the scent helps head repel lice.
Are these products safe to use on my child? Are there natural alternatives rather than chemicals?
24
www.ncwkidconnect.com
Lice Good-Bye® is the safe, natural and clinically proven
alternative to harsh chemical treatments. And research shows chemical treatments are no longer effective at killing lice, as they have become resistant.
How To Prevent Head Lice
However, not all natural “treatments” are proven equal. Home remedies such as olive oil and mayonnaise may smother a live bug but do not kill the egg (or nit), which will hatch and infest. Only Lice Good-Bye® contains a natural enzyme that dissolves the sticky nit glue to ensure easy and effective removal of lice and nit.
How do I get rid of it in my house? Where do I start? What should be cleaned?
Wash all bedding in hot water and dry on the hottest setting. Stuffed animals can be washed and dried on high heat as well. For delicate plushies, place in zip-lock bag and quarantine them for 48 hours. Lice cannot survive off the head for more than 36 hours. Make sure to wipe down surfaces and vacuum under beds, couches and any place kids rest their heads - car seats too. Furniture treatments are not necessary.
How can I tell if my child has head lice?
Combs, brushes and hair ties should be replaced. Or soak them in hot water. Any hats or headbands should be bagged and put away for 48 hours.
Know the symptoms. If your child is scratching his/her head or has small bumps on the neck or scalp, do a head check, paying special attention to the hot spots - behind ears, back of neck, part lines. Be sure to check the entire family. Chances are high that siblings will also have lice. Even a single nit can quickly become an outbreak, so check their heads thoroughly.
How do you know if the treatment was successful?
How do you properly do a head check for lice?
Regular head checks are the best way to help prevent future occurrences. When a treatment is successful, there will be no further signs of lice or nit on the nit-picking comb.
Can pets get it?
Pets do not carry the same type of head lice as children.
Please see the quick and easy head check demonstration at the following link: http://www.fairytaleshaircare.com/ lice911/instructional-videos
What advice do you have if lice cross our family’s path?
First, do not panic! Lice are a nuisance
but not a health issue. And you are not alone. There are other families dealing with this right now. Just take a deep breath and follow our easy steps to eliminate them. And remember, a good offense is the best defense. Using Rosemary Repel® Hair Care daily will help prevent.
For more information on the products of Fairy Tale Hair Care please visit their website at www.fairytaleshaircare.com There you can also find how-to videos, advice, reviews and more. Day by Day Calendar Your Guide to FUN in the Wenatchee Valley
Brayden Crollard
Note from Nikki: We are ultimately a calendar of events for kid and family activities. However, you will notice that on occasion, I will throw an adult only event in as well. No need to panic, I just feel that sometimes (or rather, a LOT of times!), parents need a date night, moms need a girls night out, or there may be a fundraiser benefiting youth that I feel us adults shoud support. While it is not an enclusive calendar with ALL events happening in the Valley for adults (there are other great publications for that!), this will explain why I throw in a few every now and then. Also, don’t miss the weekly events in a separate box on page 31! We have them placed there so that they don’t jam up the entire calendar, hiding other new events. We hope this makes your planning a little easier as you can go through and highlight, for yourself, the events you want to attend this Fall. Happy Planning and Enjoy!

Confident Kids is a powerful support group for kids and their caregivers. It is a Bible based support group ministry offering a life skills curriculum that helps families with children ages 5-12 years old dealing with the stresses of living in today’s world. Through games, crafts, skits, and small group discussions, children learn important skills while in a safe place to talk about their life experiences. In a concurrent group, parents learn to apply these same skills at home while in a safe place to share their stories as well. In both groups, participants grow as they discover they are not alone in their pain. Parents/caregivers are required to attend the Adult Support Group.
