Visiting Our Florida Beaches? Please Read! In preparation for Labor Day weekend in early September, I wanted to give you a quick update on the conditions of our beautiful beaches with the current red tide situation. Red tide it’s not a new occurrence in Florida, but water pollution, climate change, and the recent Tropical Storm Elsa may have worsened the proliferation of this naturally occurring phenomenon. During red tide, a collection of harmful algae and other microscopic marine organisms called “Karenia Brevis” grows and accumulates in toxic and harmful “blooms,” which are highly deadly to fish and unpleasant for humans. High concentrations of red tide “blooms” have been reported throughout several counties, including Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee, and Sarasota. Tons of dead fish carcasses have been washed ashore in Florida’s Gulf Coast beaches and waterfront parks due to the harmful effects of red tide on marine life. The Tampa Bay Beaches Chamber of Commerce (TBBCoC) released an update stating that on Wednesday, July 21, “the water along the beaches from St. Pete Beach to Belleair Shores is very discolored, and the aerosols were extremely strong. The beaches from Madeira north to Indian Rocks are heavily impacted. Each municipality has been actively working to remove the dead fish, and contractor resources were deployed as needed to assist.” That characteristic “gross dead fish smell” is definitely more overpowering in certain areas, and respiratory irritation has been reported by several residents of Pinellas County and Hillsborough county. If you or any family member experience respiratory discomfort and irritation, please wear a mask. Make sure to cover your nose and mouth to filter

out marine aerosol particles containing red tide toxins. If you’re asthmatic or have chronic lung disease, be vigilant about taking your prescribed meds daily. The state health department recommends that people with such diseases try their best to avoid beaches currently affected by the red tide. Always seek medical care if your symptoms worsen. Bathing and swimming are okay for most people. However, red tide can cause skin irritation and burning eyes. Use common sense— if you are particularly susceptible to irritation from plant products, avoid red tidewater. If you experience irritation, get out and thoroughly wash off. Avoid swimming among dead fish because they are associated with harmful bacteria. Ongoing cleanup efforts are slowly but effectively improving the beaches’ condition, but you must proceed cautiously. I would personally like to take this opportunity to thank our Governor, city officials, city workers, shrimping boat captains, local fishermen, and every member and volunteer involved in the cleaning efforts of our beaches. For the latest Red Tide status report (available by phone), call 866-300-9399 at any time. I encourage anyone planning a fun beach weekend to check out https// visitbeaches.org for the most updated information on beach conditions. P.S. Happy National Dog Month to all Dog Owners!!! Just make sure your pup stays away from the dead fish if you’re strolling down our beaches! August celebrates our lovable canine pals, so make sure you do something special for your four-legged best friend during these dog days of summer. Until next time,

Carla M. Dubis Tedeschi.

Tech Talk with Bob: Did you keep the box?

Do you act like a kid when you get a new tech toy? I know I do. It’s fine to be excited when you open the box. I would suggest however, you open it in a manner that does not destroy the integrity of the box and not damage or obscure any labels attached to its exterior. Be gentle because even after the device is removed, the box can still offer valuable protection. Most stores offer return policies if your new device doesn’t work. Become familiar with the return policy of any store before you spend your money. Some stores give cash refunds. Others only offer exchanges. Rarely you may find a store that has no return policy, and you must deal directly with the device’s manufacturer warranty. Know your options should your new device come out of the box defective. Keep the box in nice condition until you know your new device is functioning properly. Most stores will not accept returns without the device’s original packaging. If you purchased online, you need the box to safely ship it back to the seller. How long should you keep the box? At minimum, at least as long as the store’s return policy. Unfortunately, I have seen people get stuck with a lemon because they

8 AUGUST 2021

threw the box away too soon. Hey if you bought a new laptop computer and it works, that’s wonderful! That’s what you expect. However, if you throw the box away the day after you buy the laptop, and then it fails a week later, you may have a difficult time convincing the store to take it back. Then your only recourse will be dealing with the manufacturer. And that could take weeks or even months. Whereas if you had the packaging, you could take it right back to the store for an immediate refund or exchange. When the time finally comes to discard the box be sure to do this first. Either scan or take a picture of the labels on the box exterior that give the details of your device. I have included an example. This is a great way to identify and document your laptop’s particulars, especially if it is lost or stolen. The brand, model, series, part number, serial number and other details are on these labels. Did you write down the serial number of your laptop? Taking a couple of pictures can avoid not having this information and avoids mistakes or illegible handwriting. In the world of computers, there is a big difference between the number zero and the letter O; the number one or the letter I. What’s the saying? A picture is worth a thousand words. Just remember to save the picture somewhere other than on the laptop itself and always print a hard copy for your paper file. Never forget, cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Whether you are a business or nonprofit who keeps records about clients, customers, prospects, employees, vendors, sales, budgets, inventories… you get the idea. It is your responsibility to protect your personal network, your computer’s operation, and your data. Even a home user who may keep records

about club members, kids sports leagues, volunteer work, or just filing your income taxes on your home computer, is a target. How safe is your computer? My staff and I are here to keep your computer safer and stay running. You don’t have to go it alone my Friend. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re here to help. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: FALL IS HERE! By Dr. Wayne Adams FALL EXAM DATES: SAT: August 28, October 2, December 4; ACT: September 11, October 23, December 11. Summer vacation went by too fast! Now that school has restarted (or is about to), everyone gets to refocus and get ready for the fall. Happily, most Covid 19 concerns are behind us, college campuses are reopening, and life is moving on. For Seniors, it’s a combination of doing well academically, activities, and preparing the best college applications. From my prior articles, you know that more and more and more colleges are admitting up to half their classes or more with early admissions and the chances of admissions are about three times higher than with applying at the normal time. Check out these dates and requirements on the college websites, or call the admissions office. If your SAT and/or ACT scores are not where you want for admissions and/or Bright Futures, give me a call. For Juniors, it’s the middledistance lap in high school balancing academics and activities with doing well on the PSAT in October and building a resume for college applications. If you are aiming high, for a “top 25 school”, know that the best way to really “stand out” is to build a distinctive strength, to become outstanding in some field that you enjoy. There is a myth around that colleges are looking for “well rounded” students. Top colleges want “lopsided” students, those who have something outstanding (other than grades and SAT/ACT scores) and can change the world. They equate “well-rounded” with mediocre! For Sophomores, it’s the next lap in a longer-distance run with academics, activities, and longer term planning for college applications. On occasion,

12 AUGUST 2021

schools will give an SAT or an ACT exam for “placement”, which means determining which academic level courses that student can take. If you are aiming high for colleges it is not too early to start preparing for the SAT and/or ACT exams. I continue to innovate with new approaches to all areas of exam prep. For example, Reverse Engineering and interactively taking the Writing and Language section of the SAT and English section of the ACT produce major improvements; “6 strategies” on the ‘yellow brick road” is a smash hit for Reading on the SAT, and “Reading for what you need” on the ACT do the same on the ACT Reading giving most students an additional 4-5 minutes to find the answers on this exam; special preparation for “Curve Balls” in math jump a student’s score while greatly improving self-confidence on both exams; and “Bottomup Reading” and “Five key strategies” are making a great difference on the Science part of the ACT. My guide Achieve and Maintain Your Peak Mental Performance Zone On The SAT, ACT, And In Life has proven to be very helpful to all students in handling “test anxiety”, maintaining focus, and reestablishing control during these exams. A surprising finding about the staggering level of student debt at $1.7 trillion (with a “T”) recently exploded with a Wall Street Journel expose article about how elite and other universities are heavily marketing master’s degrees that they know will never pay back enough to justify the education. For example, a Master’s in Fine Arts from Columbia in NYC puts many students $300k in debt for jobs that maybe pay $50k a year. Another article showed that an MBA from Harvard Business School produced a 1.8 multiple

from the average debt to the average first year compensation including hiring bonus. UF ranked second on this relationship with almost a 6:1 multiple. Plus, UF grads usually work in lower cost areas, so their money goes farther. The point is that, when considering an undergraduate major, take a close look at options for a masters degree in that field including costs, possible debt, and starting salaries. Never forget that universities are a business, and many make a 70% cash flow profit on their masters degrees, get paid up front, and saddle many students with debt for the rest of their lives without blinking an eye. See https://www.wsj.com/articles/ financially-hobbled-for-life-theelite-masters-degrees-that-dontpay-off-11625752773. You can find many more articles about this on-line. As you know, my goal for my students and their families is that they have their best possible futures – which includes doing their best on the SAT and/or ACT Exams. This is part of the college admissions counseling and planning we also do during our course. If You Would Like To Talk More With Dr. Adams About Your Student … Please contact him at 727-253-0639 or send an email to wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors

in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 300 points on the Writing, Reading, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 5 OF THE “Topo 5”, 9 of the “Top 10”, and 18 of the “Top 25” universities, and many more schools in Florida and around the country. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force - Naval, a- Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. He has also tutored three juniors who became national merit finalists with their scores on the PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Free Prodigy® Visual and Performing Arts Classes for Kids and Teens Heading into its twenty-first year, Prodigy® Cultural Arts, a University Area CDC (Community Development Corporation) year-long program, pairs children ages six to 18 with professional artist mentors in the field. The goal is to tailor their free programming to precisely what kids want to do. Prodigy® members visited children in the community and asked what would interest them in attending a summer or after-school program. The group of teens responded that they wanted to create music. The Prodigy® team put on their thinking caps and transformed a room, an office generously donated by a staff member, and created a music production studio. “We huddled up and said, ‘we need to build a production studio, but how do you do that?’ Google was our friend,” said Sarah Combs, University Area CDC executive director. “We figured out how to build a music studio. What was so amazing about that class was that we got the teens involved because it was something that they were interested in. That’s why our classes change every year. We are doing what the kids want to see. One year doesn’t look like the next year because The Prodigy® team listens to what the kids say and tailors their programming around their requests. “We want to make it fun to come to class.” Examples of classes offered include music production, comedy improv, guitar, coding, culinary arts, visual arts, STEM, and more. “We use visual and performing arts to help young people develop life skills like communication, leadership, problem-solving, anger management, and goal-setting,” she said. “The idea is that through art, young people begin to build confidence and learn how to showcase their skills and develop lifelong positive habits for success in the future.” Through Prodigy® Moves, two fully outfitted vans bring teachers directly to the kids in underserved communities through 10 counties in west-central Florida. They’ve partnered with local churches and serviceoriented organizations to bring Prodigy® classes to those unable to come to the center. “One of the beautiful things about Prodigy® is recently, we’ve had seniors request our program. One of our favorite and most requested classes is our seniors’ linedancing class.”

16 AUGUST 2021

“We’re flexible. We ask how we can be a program that changes with the youth and what’s happening in the world - being adaptable, being nimble, and somewhat flexible to change. That’s why our program has been so strong. We tailor it to the youth and make sure it stays relevant to the topics they are interested in. We truly offer something for everyone. Every kid is different. Some may be interested in art. Others art or dance. Whatever that is for you,

you’ll find it here at Prodigy®.” If you have already registered in the summer, no re-registration is necessary to continue through the fall. No fee is required to attend Prodigy® classes in the summer or the Fall. Classes are filled first-come, first-serve. Registration is available online at uacdc.org/prodigyregistration. Anyone requesting a Prodigy® Moves program for their area should visit uacdc.org/ prodigymoves or call 813-558-5212.

Red, White, and Back the Blue Celebrates Second Year Fundraising for Fallen Officers By Deborah Bostock-Kelley In the tumultuous year of 2020, Lisa Campos’ father asked if she could do something to honor law enforcement. Lisa stepped up to the challenge. Using her expertise as the founder of the non-profit Investigation Station, she reached out to the community. She partnered with Pasco Backs the Blue, a local non-profit organization created in 2020 to show local law enforcement agencies that the residents of Pasco County support their sheriff’s office and police departments. On October 17, 2020, the fundraising rally, “Red, White, and Back the Blue,” was born. (October 17 was the day of the event itself. The idea was “born” in July, about eight weeks before the event took place.) Gill Dawg, a waterfront dining, recreation, and entertainment hub, was one of the first to answer their call, followed by a slew of other businesses eager to sponsor and honor those who put their lives at risk every day to protect their community. The event was kicked off by Congressman Gus Bilirakis praising and thanking dedicated law enforcement officers. Nearly 2,000 guests attended to offer support, fundraise, and enjoy live music, food, and drink. By the close of the rally, between sponsorships and guest purchases and donations, $11,000 was raised for the Pasco County Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Memorial and Benefit Foundation.

20 AUGUST 2021

Now, in its second year, the “Red, White and Back the Blue” event is returning, hosted by Investigation Station and Pasco Backs the Blue on October 16 at Gill Dawg in Port Richey from 2 – 10 PM. For a $10 ticket, the concert event and fundraiser feature(s) guest speakers, live music, food, drink, and raffle baskets. Featured musicians include country singer, Patrick Gibson, joined by local bands, The Bearded Brothers, and the Journey tribute band (Never) Stop Believin’. Lisa said, “It’s going to be an afternoon-long festival of music, raffles, and vendors at Gill Dawg. All proceeds raised will go to Investigation Station and the Pasco County Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Memorial and Benefit Foundation. Pasco County is the (only) county (left) in the state of Florida that doesn’t have a memorial for its fallen officers.” The Pasco County Fallen Law Enforcement Officer Memorial and Benefit Foundation has been working to build a memorial for Pasco, to recognize law enforcement officers hurt or killed in the line of duty. Once the memorial has been completed, all remaining and future funds will help such officers and their families with financial burdens. Lisa’s non-profit, Investigation Station, creates free interactive exhibits for children and their caregivers in Pasco County. With three public exhibits under their belt, (one of) their upcoming project(s) reflects patriotism an exhibition of the history of

flags of the US and Florida. If a business wants to donate a basket for their raffle or a bottle of wine for their spirits table, the opportunity to be showcased as part of the 2nd annual event is still available. “Include your business card, and we’ll make sure you get recognition for your

donation.” Corporate Sponsorships are also available in amounts of $100 to $2,500, with different benefits attached to each level. Vendors can participate for as little as $50. “Last year, everyone had a really good time, and they were so generous with not only with their time coming

out to support the cause but with their money. So many people gave donations and bought our ‘In Pasco, We Support the Blue’ tee shirts. It was a beautiful event. The sponsors, the volunteers, the bands, and the crowds that came to support the event – it was an awesome event,” said

Lisa. “The audience should expect to feel a sense of pride, respect for our fallen law enforcement officers. The day will be filled with some nice speakers at the beginning and live music all evening long. The venue is covered, so it should not put a damper on our event even if

it rains because the pavilion is enormous. I can’t wait for this year.” Red, White, and Back the Blue is Saturday, October 16, at Gill Dawg, 5419 Treadway Dr., Port Richey, from 2 PM

Small dining room details that can make a major statement by Decorating Den | Design Inspiration The dining room is a place for family and friends to gather after long days apart. It’s a place to play catch-up over a hot, home-cooked meal. A place to have game night and share laughs for hours. No matter how you utilize the dining room, it’s a special place for many. It deserves stylish decor and design elements that will make it shine. The dining room table is generally the focal point of this space, but there are many ways to decorate around this statement piece in an effort to unite the whole room. Thinking of giving your dining room a revamp in the near future? Here are a few small ways to make a major statement on your journey to redesign:

paint, or you can use wallpaper to add more texture in the space.

1. Add an accent wall Instead of repainting all four walls of the dining room, pick some vertical space to create a stunning accent wall. You can do this with another shade of

2. Choosing shelves instead of cabinetry Placing a large form of vintage cabinetry in the dining room is the

22 AUGUST 2021

traditional route. If your design style is more transitional or contemporary, choose from the many outstanding buffets that will make your dining room the room in which you will want to entertain and show off. 3. Don’t forget the area rug

For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com

An area rug is a must in the dining room, as it can add that level of comfort you’ve come to crave in this area of the home. If you want to go big and bold, choose a color, pattern or texture that makes this the focal point of the space. Make sure that the area rug extends out far enough so that chairs will still remain on top of the rug when they are pulled out for use. 4. Mix up the centerpiece Instead of having a concrete centerpiece, why not mix things up to match the season? This can be a fun opportunity to follow seasonal themes while choosing pieces that still complement the rest of the room. 5. Decorate with mirrors The dining room is a

place for conversation, a space that exudes livelihood. The easiest way to keep this place vibrant and refreshing is to prioritize natural lighting. Sheer curtains is one way to do this, but decorating with mirrors is another hack that works. It’s a simple way to bounce the light around the room and can even make the space feel larger than it actually is. Need help along the way? Call Decorating Den Interiors (see our ad on page 11!) With a level of normalcy finally entering our lives again, it’s safe to say that you’ll likely be gathering with family and friends on a more regular basis in the near future. It’s always a great time to make your living space feel more like home.

“Best of Philly” story continued from page 1 Since taking over Best of Philly in March 2020, owner Ben Cellini has continued to amaze regulars going to the Cheesesteak house since former owner Mike was running it. “Ben was super nice and made my food the way I ordered it. I want to thank the horrible sub place across the street for telling me about this place. Ben, you were right, I will be back,” says recent customer turned regular Jennifer S. Regular Samantha O. says, “After trying so many spots, I finally found my ‘goto’ place for authentic Philly Cheesesteaks! They are so delicious!!! They taste just like the ones up north, or better! Ben does a great job!”

surrounding the authentic Amoroso roll. If you want a genuine and delicious Philly Cheesesteak in a family environment, you’ve come to the right place. As Ben always says, “Best of Philly’s cheesesteaks only rival his old home of South Philly regarding flavor and quality.” Another cheesesteak enthusiast named Sharon agrees: “Best of Philly has amazing cheesesteaks!!! The only place I’ve found after 13 years in Florida that is comparable to the ones from home (and is actually better than some of the places I used to order from up there!).”

Serving the Trinity community and surrounding areas for over a decade and known to the locals as a “sandwich lovers’ dream,” Best of Philly Cheesesteak House boasts the best Philly cheesesteak sandwich around! And not just any cheesesteak – an authentic cheesesteak with natural Philadelphian ingredients, cooked by a Philadelphian native who knows how to make it “just right,” and in my opinion, even better. The quality of the real Philly “Absolutely DELICIOUS! meat tastes fantastic, and This place is the sandwich the cheese melts into the place I had been looking perfect combination of flavor for! Florida’ with mushrooms, onions, and sweet peppers,” says recent customer Nicholas N. in his 5-star Google review. This particular Philly happens to be the Best of Philly’s “favorite and most popular item” of them all! This Philly “does this thing where it just makes your mouth water,” says Ben, who also enjoys gobbling up one of these delectable sandwiches when he gets the chance. And you know that if Ben, a Philadelphian native, likes it, it’s going to be good! “I’m just proud of the product,” Ben says, and of course, so many others are pleased too. “People love our cheesesteaks so much that they rarely try anything else, but we have so many delicious choices on our menu,” says Ben. “I always try to encourage our regulars to try something

new, but that is a hard battle to win once they have tasted our Philly! You obviously can’t go wrong with a Philly Cheesesteak from Best of Philly, but keep in mind that there are many other delicious items worth trying as well. Start your order with a fresh and healthy salad or whole deli pickle. Indulge with some fried ravioli, mac and cheese bites, jalapeño poppers, or with one of my favorite treats; their freshcut french fries! These fries are the perfect side for your Philly, or just on their own with a side of gravy or hot cheese. Gravy for your French fries is the ultimate comfort food, and you will love them! Local food guide Mary LaPierre says, “This was

dogs. Every kid’s meal includes fries or chips and oreo cookies. Enjoy the Best of Philly without leaving the comfort of your home! If you want to kick back without having to step foot anywhere, the cheesesteak house delivers to the local area! Order a delicious and filling meal of $10 or more, and your delivery fee is only $1! Best of Philly is currently open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM, with deliveries ending at 7:30.

my husband and my 1st time at this phenomenal dining establishment and as Ben said, ‘It won’t be your last time!’ Well, Ben, you were 100% right. The homemade fries w gravy were out of this world!! The Philly steak sandwiches doing it the “Florida” way proved to be the “Philly way!!!!!” Highly recommended!!!”

“We are 90% pick-up and delivery, but if customers want to sit down and eat, we’re happy to accommodate them,” says Ben. “We’re currently offering nearby local delivery, and we’re on GrubHub and UberEats.” Despite Covid 19, Ben has continued to keep Best of Philly’s growing number of customers happy in a clean and safe environment.

Pair those mouth-watering fries with any one of their delicious clubs (BLT sandwich, BLT club, turkey club, ham club); or any of their hot sandwiches (grilled chicken, chicken parmesan, sausage & peppers, sausage & peppers parmesan, breaded fried chicken, breaded fried fish) or cold hoagies (Italian, Ham & cheese, salami & cheese, turkey & cheese, extra cheese) and you’ve got yourself the perfect meal!

Now, if you’ve never tried a Philly Cheesesteak before and you step inside Best of Philly, Ben may warn you that, “You might not want to try it.” And then you might ask yourself – why would the owner of Best of Philly Cheesesteak House with some of the best said Phillies in Florida and even in Philly, according to some, say such a thing? Well, the answer is really simple, as Ben says: “Cause once you eat one, you’ll be back every week.”

Other favorites are their bone-in wings, boneless wings, burgers, fried mushrooms, crispy onion rings, and breaded fried shrimp. There’s also a kid’s menu that includes favorites such as chicken tenders, grilled cheese, and hot
