1. Be water wise. Install a high-efficiency showerhead (one with the WaterSense label) and cut your family's water use by up to 2,900 gallons a year. Don't keep the faucet running when brushing your teeth or shaving only turn it on when rinsing the toothbrush or razor. For drinking water, forget those plastic bottles. Get reusable metal, glass, or plastic bottles, fill them at the tap, and keep in the fridge. 2. Turn lights off. Do this every time you leave a room and you'll stop wasting energy lighting up places no one is using. 3. Make a grocery list. Always do this before leaving for the market and you won't make a second trip for things you forgot, winding up using twice the gas for the same result. 4. Eat organic. Organic foods are grown without using pesticides or chemicals that can harm the earth. ey may cost a little more, but many people feel the value is there from better nutrition, as well as from the earth·friendly farming. 5. Eat less meat. Livestock is a high contributor to greenhouse gases. It's fine to enjoy eating meat; just include it on the menu a little less oen. 6. Cook greener. Cut energy when cooking pasta or rice. Aer you bring it to a boil, put a lid on the pot and turn off the stove. e food will cook just as well until it's done, according to green cooking experts.

Look online for more surprising green cleaning items. 9. Launder greener. Only wash full loads of laundry and use cold water and earth-friendly laundry soaps. Switch to an Energy Star washing machine that uses 20% less energy and 35% less water. Dry some of your laundry outside on a clothesline or on a rack in the laundry area or bathroom. Air-dry a third of your laundry and you're saving a third of the energy your dryer consumes.
