Rogers Jewelry Co was founded in 1937 by Harry Marks and Dr. Robert Moon. Since then, our family has grown to its 4th generation with six family members working in the stores.

The 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut) are the four traits that are used when determining a diamond’s rarity.
C A R AT W E I G HT
Carat weight tells you what a diamond weighs when put on a scale. It says nothing about the size of a diamond or any other factors that can lead to beauty.
C OL OR
Color refers to how many shades away from perfectly white a diamond is. It doesn’t tell you which color this is (unless it is in the fancy range) and is usually based on yellow, brown or grey. Some colors, such as red or blue, can add to the rarity of the diamond. Colors range alphabetically from D to Z, then progress to higher end colors.
CL A RIT Y
Clarity describes whether a diamond has a portion that is not fully crystalized (inclusion) and under what power magnification that portion is noticeable. This ranges from immediately noticeable (I3) to unable to be seen under 10x power magnification (Flawless).
CU T
Cut refers to two parts of the diamond. The first is the shape (round, princess, pear, oval, marquise, cushion, asscher, etc). The second is how well the diamond is cut, which includes how symmetrical the diamond is and how well it is polished.
While all of these qualities describe a diamond in terms of rarity, they do not tell the whole story. For that, you have to see a diamond for yourself. A diamond, just like a snowflake, is truly unique and when you find the one that catches your eye, you’ll know it. Because the most valuable diamond… is the one you are in love with.

Did you know that 14 karat white gold and 14 karat yellow gold have the same amount of gold? 14 karat means that 14 parts out of 24 parts are gold. This also means that 24 karat gold is pure gold. Why make gold with only 10, 14, or 18 parts gold (10kt, 14kt or 18kt)? There are two reasons: The first is that gold itself is a very soft metal and needs to be alloyed (mixed) with other metals to make it stronger and harder. The second is that gold is expensive and we want everyone to have a little gold in their life, so we dilute it down to allow people to afford this precious, elegant metal.

Are all 14 karats the same? No, 14kt means that 14 out of 24 parts are gold but what about the other 10 parts? Does it matter? Yes. If you are allergic to nickel and they put nickel in your ring to strengthen it, it can cause a rash. If they mix it with other materials like platinum or palladium, which are also rare metals, not only will the price go up, but the durability will as well, causing the piece of jewelry to be hypoallergenic and last a lot longer.

It may be hard to keep track of but, just like everything you use everyday, your jewelry needs freshening up. Just remember that when you get your oil changed you need to stop by the jewelry store and get your jewelry cleaned and checked. We recommend getting your jewelry cleaned and checked at least every 6 months. We always offer this service for free!
For the softer gemstones like Pearls and opals, remember the rule “Last on, First off,” meaning if you’re going to an event, put them on last, after your makeup and hairspray (these can cause discoloration or damage to these gemstones). And take them first when you get home.
CL E A N IN G YO UR JE WE L RY AT H OME When cleaning your jewelry at home, stick to lukewarm water, mild dish soap, and an extremely soft brush to brush away dirt and grime. (As a reminder for the softer stones like pearls, emeralds, and opals, use a soft cloth with no treatments as they can discolor or otherwise harm the stone).
IN SUR AN CE Be sure to have your jewelry insured through a homeowners policy or renters insurance. There is nothing worse than damaging or losing a beautiful piece of jewelry and not being able to replace it.
WHE N T R AVE L ING Avoid chlorine or salt-water damage by removing all jewelry before going in a hot tub, swimming pool, or ocean. Remove all jewelry before applying sunscreen and tanning oil, which can get caught in crevices and coat your jewelry, dulling the look of your gemstones or diamonds. Store all jewelry in a clean, dry place.

If you’re staying in a hotel, make sure to keep your jewelry in a safe when you’re not wearing it. Keep your jewelry in a fabric-lined jewelry case with compartments to prevent pieces from getting scratched or tangled.
