AMIT’S VILLAGE PART 1 Surviving the storm Amit stopped near the river and listened. Everything was very quiet. There were almost no sounds. There were no birds, and no animals. “Something is wrong!” thought Amit. Normally, there are a lot of sounds in the jungle. You can usually hear the wind blowing the trees and all the different birds making different noises up high in the trees. Sometimes you could hear monkeys. But today it is all very different. Amit felt afraid. He didn’t know what to do, so he ran home to his village, and his parents. Amit lives in a small village in the middle of a rainforest in India. He likes it there. There are lots of dangers, but it is also a very beautiful place to live. “Mum, dad! There’s something very strange in the forest.” “What’s the matter?” asked his mother, Kajal. “I don’t know,” said Amit. “There are no sounds in the jungle today. All I can hear is the river. There are no animals and no birds, and even the wind and the trees are quiet. What does it mean?” Kajal looked at her son. “Oh, Amit! It means that there is going to be a storm! All the animals are looking for a quiet and safe place to hide. Don’t worry too much. Everything is going to be okay.” But Kajal is very afraid. She remembers the storm that destroyed her village a few years ago. Every year the storms get worse. Amit’s father, Paothang, called him to come and help. The men are preparing their village for the storm because, if they don’t, the storm will wash their homes away. Amit helps his father in every way he can. There are some caves in the mountain near their home. They want to take everything with them, and hide in a cave. They hope that the storm doesn’t come too soon. They hope there is time! 3

PART 2 Rebuilding the village Amit and his family survived the storm. It wasn’t a bad one like Amit’s mother was afraid of. They moved back to the village from the cave. The houses were still there, but many things were destroyed. Now they needed to find food to eat. There was none left from before the storm. Amit’s father and some of the other men went out to hunt for some meat. There are wild pigs and just one pig would feed the whole village for two or three days. Kajal and the women of the village go to work to fix everything the storm destroyed. They don’t have much food in their houses, so they tell the children to go to the fields to find some potatoes, and some rice and maybe a few other things that are easy to get. Kajal said, “If you find some good things to eat, we will make a good meal. Then we can eat it with the meat your father brings back.” The children all go looking for food. They go to the rice fields, but there isn’t much rice that they can get. But there are some fruit trees there. They find a lot of mangos on the ground. They gather the ones that are good to eat. There are lots of coconuts on the ground, too. The storm blew them out of the trees, so now it’s easier to get them. The children are happy because they have found a lot of good food to take back home. “My mother will be very happy with all the fruit and other food we have gathered,” thought Amit. They now need to start rebuilding the village. At least everyone is safe and no one is hurt. This time they were lucky. The storm wasn’t that bad. 4

HYDE PARK THIEF PART 1 A visit to London and a pop concert Aimee and Mark are twins. Their family gave them some money for their birthday last month. They talked about what they wanted to do with some of the money and decided to go to a concert. They bought the tickets a few days ago. “Have you ever seen Madonna in concert?” asked Aimee. “My friend Kate said she’s really good. I’ve loved Madonna since I was really young.” Mark has also liked Madonna for about 5 years. So, they’re both really looking forward to the concert. The night before the concert, the kids went to bed really early. The next day they had to catch the train at 8 o’clock in the morning. The train arrived in London at about 10. Mark has never been to London, but Aimee has been there three times before. Last year she went on a school trip to the British Museum and the Tower of London. They decided to go in the morning, although the concert was in the evening at 8 o’clock. Dad would meet them afterwards and take them home. It was going to be a fantastic day. “Isn’t Madonna great?” said Mark. “She looks really good and she’s a lot older than mum!” “Yes, I know. That’s because she does lots of exercise and takes care of herself. It’s easier to do that when you are rich,” said Aimee. When they were in London they looked around the shops in Oxford Street. They went to Nike Town to find some new trainers. Mark wanted to get a new football. Aimee wanted to shop for some new clothes. She felt like she was in fashion heaven. At lunch time they looked for a place to eat, but everything was too expensive. They’ve brought enough money with them, but they don’t want to spend all of it. They went to Hyde Park to eat their lunch and rest. The weather was very good and very warm. They were happy and excited about the concert later that day. “It’s so exciting. I’ve never been to London without an adult,” said Aimee. “Yes,” said Mark, “I’ve never been to London at all. I’m a bit scared, to tell you the truth!” “Don’t worry, Mark. You’ll see that everything will be fine. Nothing can go wrong today.” 7

PART 2 The thief and the pop star They were both very tired because of their journey in the morning and all the walking. Aimee told Mark that she wanted to rest for an hour. So they went to sleep on the grass in Hyde Park. They slept for about an hour and when they woke up they weren’t tired any more. They were ready for more exploring. The next stop was the Tower of London. “Oh, no,” said Aimee, “Where’s my bag?” They looked around and couldn’t find Aimee’s bag. It was gone! It was stolen while they slept on the grass. Aimee cried. “The concert tickets were in the bag. And all my money, too!” They were really upset and didn’t know what to do. Mark started to feel a bit depressed. They found a policeman and told him about their situation. The policeman was very friendly and asked them what the bag looked like. “It’s a new blue sports bag. It was a birthday present from a friend of mine.” The policeman wrote down all the information. They told him about the concert later that day. He felt sorry for them, too. He took them to the police station so they could phone their parents and tell them about it. When they got to the police station there were a lot of people there. “Something has happened,” the policeman said. They wondered what all the excitement was about. They went inside and there in front of them was Madonna! That afternoon she spent her lunch time at Hyde Park and a man tried to rob her. But her bodyguard protected her and caught the thief. Madonna immediately called the police. She was at the police station now describing the robbery. The thief was the same one who had stolen Aimee’s bag. The policeman told Madonna what happened to the kids and so she invited them to spend the rest of the day with her, and come to the concert that evening as her guests. Wow! They couldn’t believe it! In the end everything turned out well. This was something they would never forget.

THE MAGIC MP3 PLAYER PART 1 A special gift Andy’s favourite uncle always gave him special gifts at Christmas and his birthday. They used to be great surprises and sometimes meant strange new adventures. He wondered what it would be like this year. The day came and uncle Vince gave him his little gift. It was just a small box and it didn’t look like anything special. Andy opened the box and inside was an MP3 player. It didn’t look very special. Uncle Vince looked at Andy and smiled. Later that evening Andy downloaded some music onto the player, and stayed in his room listening to music. He fell asleep listening to it. The next day when he woke up, things in his bedroom were different. His computer was in the same place, but it wasn’t his computer. He opened his wardrobe and looked at his clothes. He thought to himself “That’s a bit strange!” There were jeans and t-shirts but they were not the clothes he used to wear. 11

PART 2 2075?! When he went downstairs he got a big shock. The wall in the living room was a big TV screen. Then he realised what could be happening. “I have woken up in the future,” he said. He looked at the date on the news on TV – it was 2075! He watched TV for some minutes and realised that many things were the same, but there were a lot of different things too. He remembered what his uncle would say about a new adventure, “Just stay calm and learn everything you can!” So, Andy didn’t worry. He just ate his breakfast and went off to school like he used to. School was in the same place. But the buildings were different. “What is the classroom going to be like?” he wondered. He went to his classroom for his Geography lesson. It was very different from before. “The teacher is a robot and there are no books,” he thought. All the kids had computer screens on their desks and there was a hologram model of the solar system showing cities on Mars. The robot teacher asked the students if they knew the names of the canals on Mars. Andy didn’t know their names. He was a bit embarrassed…

PART 3 Good to be back! During the break time one of his colleagues, Annie, said: “Next week we are going to have a new teacher.” She told him that she was really excited because it would be a real teacher, not just a boring old robot or computer. Andy was surprised that Annie didn’t like the robot teacher. He wanted to know more about the future. “Is it going to be very different from my time?” he thought. The next class was History. That was really interesting because they talked about the things from Andy’s time. He knew a lot of the answers that the robot teacher asked the class. He had a great time! In the evening he went home. Annie asked him if he wanted to go out to the cinema. “I’m going to do my homework. I’ll call you later when I’m free,” he said. The cinema was really cool. It was a film about life in the future. Andy smiled… He was seeing the future of the future! He thought it was quite funny. That night he went to sleep again with his MP3 player still playing. When he woke up and looked around, everything was back to normal. He was back. He got dressed and went to school. He was happy to have his old teachers again. He could see that it was better to have a real person as a teacher than a robot or a computer…
