he game of golf has created champions from all walks of life. Champions individually such as professionals like Tiger Woods and champions collectively such as those that play for the love of the game, for a purpose, or for a little parea. On Monday, August 27, Ascension Cathedral’s 44th Annual Golf Tournament in honor of John A. Andronico welcomes golfers,
friends and aficionados to Sequoyah Golf and Country Club, a private club tucked away in the Oakland hills. One of the Cathedral’s
primary fundraising events as well as one of the Bay Area’s firstrate tournaments, participants welcome a mouthwatering lamb lunch, a chance to win a Jaguar, an extravagant cocktail hour complete with oysters and more, a silent and live auction that includes premiere wines and sports memorabilia, all topped off with a fabulous prime rib and traditional Greek-style chicken dinner prepared and hosted at the Cathedral under the leadership of Chef Peter Phillips. Now there’s a reason to shout ‘fore’ with glee. Since its inception, the tournament has raised over $1.1 million – funds that have helped improve the cathedral facilities and reduce the debt of its community center over the years. In 2002, however, the golf committee pledged to raise $700,000 for the Cathedral’s Capital Campaign as its share of the community-wide effort to build a Parking Pavilion and Chapel. With the Parking Pavilion complete and the Chapel exterior, the committee has raised $588,000 to date. That’s a lot of golf balls, golf carts and lamb sandwiches! In 1968, Ascension Greek Orthodox Church founded its annual golf tournament to support projects and ministries of the church. The original founders included Dr. John Karsant, Greg Kosmos and Alex Phillips. Chairman Greg Kosmos served through 1971 until his co-chairman John F. Andronico joined him. Together they co-chaired the event from 1972 to 1986. Andronico served on the tournament committee for more than two decades and during that time, he and his family along with a network of friends generously donated the food, beverage and supplies. “I was asked to join the golf committee in 1984 when John

Energy leader Dr. Alex Papalexopoulos and project HELIOS
Greece’s ambitious clean energy project selects Dr. Papalexopoulos’ San Francisco-based company ECCO International as consultants
Internationally recognized energy expert Dr. Alex Papalexopoulos offered a detail account of Greece’s ambitious clean energy project HELIOS in the July HJ. Dr. Papalexopoulos’ San Francisco-based company ECCO International is one of three companies that have been selected for the project. “Green energy development is currently one of the most dynamic growth areas in the economies of many countries,” he says. “This clearly is the case for Greece.” Part two of the story continues here. Do you believe that the energy sector could constitute part of an economic strategy that Greece can implement for long term growth? Green energy development is currently one of the most dynamic growth areas in the economies of many countries. This clearly is the case for Greece. For the first time ever de-carbonization is an explicit goal of the next EU budget. And it shows: the European Commission wants to devote fully 20% of the € 1 trillion budget, which runs from 2014 to 2020, to climate-related actions. The goal is to change the face of the European energy system and sow the seeds for a low-carbon economy by 2050. The project HELIOS fits very nicely with this strategy and if it is successfully implemented it can become a vehicle of growth for Greece and a catalyst of similar projects in Europe. What is the role of your company, ECCO International, in project HELIOS? ECCO International is one of the three companies that have been selected through a competitive bidding process by the Hellenic Republic to provide financial and technical consulting services for the

project HELIOS. The other two are the National Bank of Greece SA and the Guggenheim Partners LLC, a New York financial services company. ECCO will provide technical consulting services in the areas of energy market and regulation, system operations and transmission. Guggenheim Partners will work alongside National Bank of Greece on the financing, structuring and the staged deployment of the HELIOS project. What is your specialization in the energy sector? What are the advantages of your company in the scientific and analytical modeling and energy simulations related to the energy markets? I hold a Ph.D. in energy modeling and for 25 years I have focused in the areas of system operations, reliability, planning and real time control, electricity policy, regulation, and energy market design. ECCO International, based in San Francisco California, is a specialized consulting and software company that provides energy market design, system operations and reliability services to a wide range of clients worldwide. Over the last 15 years we have designed some of the complex energy markets in North and South America, Western and Eastern Europe and Asia. We also offer software services for simulating energy and transmission markets, predicting market outcomes, and developing hedging and bidding strategies and investment plans for various market participants including financial institutions. After five years of research and development we have recently managed to reduce the speed for thousands of simulations by tenfold and make it possible to include full transmission networks in Monte-Carlo based system reliability studies for very large scale systems. This is a major breakthrough in system reliability studies especially as the level of RES penetration in power systems increases. As far as we know we are the only company that currently
offers these services. You are a Greek scientist and businessman based in San Francisco. Which markets are you focused on? Why was the Greek market of interest to you? We design energy markets for Transmission System Operators and Power Exchanges worldwide, but mainly in the U.S. and Europe. We also provide energy consulting and software services to Market Participants and RES developers. Over the last 10 years we have been very active in the energy market in Greece. We have participated in the design and implementation of the Greek wholesale market since its inception. All the major energy stakeholders, including the System Operator, the Regulator, the Public Power Corporation (PPC) and other major energy players have been our clients during this period. Over the last 2 1/2 years we have been very active in supporting PPC to design and implement the reforms pursued by the European Unit, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund (the TROIKA) with respect to liberalization of the Greek energy market. This includes the development of divestiture plans for selling PPC lignite generation assets, design of energy swaps, design of Virtual Power Plant Auctions, the development of the market Codes for the Market Operator and the Independent Transmission System Operator and the Operating Agreement between the two companies. Clearly, our projects in Greece are of special importance to me personally because they give me the opportunity to stay in touch with my country. I am personally involved in each one of them, something that I cannot say for other foreign projects. This is especially true for the TROIKA related projects which over the past 2 1/2 years had totally consumed my time. How do you and other Greeks PAPALEXOPOULOS continued on page 13

Washington’s Spectrum Open benefits Pano Koumantaros Cancer Research Fund By Frosene Phillips
P
anayiotis “Pano Koumantaros was a local entrepreneur and beloved philanthropist in Washington before his death in 2005 at the age of 61, following a courageous six-month battle against bladder cancer. Widely recognized as one of the foremost experts on retirement plan consulting and design, Pano launched an independent pension benefits consulting firm, Spectrum Financial Planning, in 1975. In 1978 it was incorporated under the name Spectrum Pension Consultants, Inc. At his request, a cancer research foundation was established in his memory following his passing. In 2006, the Spectrum Open: Charity Golf Tournament and Dinner was born, benefiting the Pano Koumantaros Cancer Research Fund. GOLF continued from page 4
“Transition was a theme John established with me, holding my hand and making sure all things were in place, he said. Together, Andronico and Vlamis developed a manual of activities and timelines that are still in place today. “He truly was a man of detail and I appreciated his coaching. When the time came for Andronico’s son Bill to take over, Vlamis proceeded to do the same for him. Generation hand-off began and so when Bill brought George Banis on as a Co-Chair he did the same for Banis.
To date the monies collected from the Spectrum Open and other memorial contributions total over $700,000. “The net proceeds from the event are sent to an endowment fund administered by the Franciscan Foundation, said Maria J. Koumantaros, Principal & Director at SPC and wife of Pano. Additionally they raised enough money during its Fund-A-Need Projects to assist with costs for purchases including a room dedication in Pano’s name and a bladder scanner, for the oncology unit, among others, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Tacoma. Also in 2011, the South Sound (Washington) Cancer Awareness and Research Expansion (C.A.R.E.) Foundation was awarded $63,000 to further the advancement of cancer care. “This money was used for clinical trials involving
10 cancer patients, said Maria. “All 10 patients had various stages and types of cancer, ranging from ovarian cancer to breast cancer. Incredibly, all 10 patients who were enrolled in the trials last year have survived to this day! This year a portion of the FundA-Need effort at the Spectrum Open will benefit breast cancer research as well. This is something close to Maria as she recently marked the tenth anniversary of her own bout with breast cancer. “We’re going to have a Greek dessert frenzy too, she shared. Guests can bid on the array of desserts – a sweet finale for a fabulous cause. The 7th Annual Spectrum Open is held at the Fircrest Golf Club, Fircrest, WA. For more information and to register for the Spectrum Open tournament, visit www.spectrumpension.com or call 253-565-2100.
“Currently, Gus Triggas is going to join George Banis as co-chair and the theme of ‘transition’ is in place. Gus has been on the committee for over 10 years ‌ members have been on the committee for an average of 18 years,â€? said Vlamis. Together they continue to raise the bar regarding their financial goal of $50,000 each year. “Fortunately we have found ways to exceed that goal,â€? said Vlamis. “Ascension has been blessed to have the support of the Andronico family,â€? he added. “The tournament is known
as the ‘crème de la crème’ of tournaments in the East Bay.â€? The Golfer fee of $400 includes the famous lamb lunch, golf at beautiful Sequoyah Country Club, tee prizes, cocktail reception and awards dinner. Cocktail reception and awards dinner tickets only are also available at $75 per person. The theme carried over to the National Philoptochos Convention, the Archdiocesan Presbyters Council, the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Musicians, the Retired Clergy Association, National Sisterhood of Presvyteres, and Archons of the Order of St. Andrew—all meeting simultaneously. The Congress was attended by 790 participants, 651 of which were registered delegates from 326 parishes. The National Philoptochos “
Convention had its second highest record of participation with 372 delegates. As the host hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco welcomed Archbishop Demetrios of America, Metropolitan Sotirios of Toronto representing His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and the other Metropolitans, clergy and laity from around the U.S. Metropolis Council Vice Chairman Fanis Economidis of Los Altos, CA,
and Council Secretary Isidoros Garifalakis of Vancouver, WA, were the Congress chairs. Archbishop Demetrios, at Sunday’s Divine Liturgy at Holy Trinity Cathedral, said, “In order to go and bear fruit, it requires a proper attitude.” In his keynote address on Monday, he expanded on the theme and also gave thanks to God for the past two years in the life of the Church, recognizing Metropolitan Maximos and his successor Metropolitan Savas, the agreement with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to build a new St. Nicholas Church at
Ground Zero, Holy Cross School of Theology’s 75th anniversary, Philoptochos’ 80th with its 27,000 members, Leadership 100, FAITH endowment fund, 30 years of St. Photios Shrine, and more. Metropolitan Gerasimos in his welcoming remarks pointed out, “The point of this congress is to grow in our faith … The process begins here to go and bear fruit … That is why we are here; to learn from the Archdiocese and

ministries.” In the Hierarchical Breakout Session which he led, the Metropolitan said that the Orthodox message is a total package. “We cannot choose certain aspects only. We must prune, yet we must water to bear fruit. We are connected to one another and cannot do this alone. Challenges will not go away. What are we doing about the environment and profound poverty? We must walk out of our comfort zone to bear fruit.” Many Archdiocesan departments have created great printed materials, available for parish use, to assist parishioners in growing in the faith: four-color pamphlets on Stewardship, Outreach, and Evangelism, and a ministry profile from that department on the necessity and details of setting up both a Church library and an Orthodox bookstore. ministries have issued pamphlets on marriage and family issues, youth programs from preschool to college, and more. More than 20 church ministries had displays in the exhibit hall, along with many ecclesiastical businesses. For ministry details and contact information, go to www. goarch.org. In less than two days, ten ministries presented 22 workshops, teeming with valuable information. Holy Cross School of Theology presented its Distinguished Ministries Award to Fr. Spencer Kezios, a member of the School board who had served St. Nicholas Church in Northridge, CA, for 45 years and in the process, among his many accomplishments, co-founded with the late Rev. Dr. Leonidas Contos Narthex Press which developed the Orthros book and other service books used by many chanters, priests, and parishioners. On July 4, the plenary session was held with reports by Archdiocesan Advisory Committee on Science and Technology (AACST); Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate; Chaplaincy, Communications; Family and Marriage, Finance; Greek Education; Internet; Leadership 100, Missions and Evangelism; Outreach, Parish Development; Stewardship; Religious Education; Youth and Camping Ministries; and the Administration Committee. That committee brought to the floor resolutions from three Metropolises suggesting the congress meet triennially rather than biennially. After a lively discussion, Congress delegates voted to maintain the twoyear cycle. The 2013—2014 budget was adopted. The delegates also adopted five resolutions; one to continue support to the suffering Greeks; a second regarding the safety of the Patriarchate of Antioch (with the conflict in Syria); the third to urge religious freedom for all Christians in Egypt; the fourth recognizing the need of people with disabilities to have accessible church facilities, and finally a traditional resolution of appreciation to Congress organizers and hierarchy. Archbishop Demetrios of America, in closing the daylong wrap-up meeting, thanked the delegates and Metropolitans. His Church-wide directive was to reach out to college students and young adults, to Orthodox Christian families, to the un-churched, to

The delegates broke up into “Straight Talk” discussion groups for increasing membership. On Tuesday an informative and thought-provoking panel discussion was held on “Domestic
Violence.” The 2012 Chapter Challenge results were presented on Tuesday and Wednesday. Assumption Church in Long Beach, CA created a project of “Ladies helping Ladies in the Military.” Also on Tuesday, Presvytera Pat Tsagalakis of Holy Apostles Church in Shoreline, WA, shared her talk on “Are you a Martha or a Mary: Balancing the Art of Giving and Receiving.” Tuesday evening was the gala awards night at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. Following the delicious buffet dinner, delegates toured the museum with its amazing worldwide collection. The 2012 AGAPE Awards (All Generations Accomplishing Philanthropic Endeavors) were presented to nine outstanding members, tireless workers in their Chapters and inspirations to other members, the parish community, and beyond. The San Francisco Metropolis recipient was Dorothea Love of St. Paul Church in Irvine,

This year it was dubbed ‘Valentine Tea in June’ and drew many women (and some men) from the area Greek Orthodox churches for an afternoon of elegant enjoyment. Two of the ladies appropriately clad in Valentine red were Roula Gouloumi and Carol Polimenakos, both of Seattle. See Northwest and Pacific Notes column on page 11 for details on the center’s opening.

S.F. Holy Trinity Panegyri prepares for 1,000 Throughout Greece, August 15th is traditionally a day of celebration and feasting following the 15 day fast for the Dormition of the Theotokos. In any given village lambs and pigs are cooked on a spit, people dance for hours, kids of all ages play games, and everyone is welcomed as a close friend and neighbor, even if they’re strangers – a true community celebration for all. This desire to recreate the
close-knit feeling of the village and community celebration led Holy Trinity of San Francisco’s organizers to start its unique Panegyri event two years ago. “Our Panegyri is unique in that we aren’t looking to turn a profit,” says Peter Misthos, committee member. “This is one of our acts of love for the Bay Area community; a true sacrifice. The more we can welcome the better!” S.F. HOLY TRINITY PANEGYRI continued on page 13

in the Silicon Valley deal with the economic crisis in Greece? The Greek crisis has affected many of us in multiple ways because we feel very close to our native land. It is the main topic of conversation in every discussion we have. And even when we do not, our American colleagues ask us about the crisis every time we meet. There is no escape of that. The Silicon Valley area went through a serious downturn over the last three years but is coming back now. High tech companies have started hiring again and Venture Capital has substantially increased funding in startups, especially in clean tech. Silicon Valley rewards new ideas, entrepreneurship and risk taking. These skills are part of a culture that Greece should adopt to maximum extent possible as it embarks to devise a new path for its future away from a corrupt political system and an over-bloated public sector. How do the Greeks of Silicon Valley try to assist Greece in this difficult period? Yes. It is a topic we often discuss. At the present time a group of us have formed a fund to financially support and mentor Greek startup companies consistent with Silicon Valley’s best business practices. It is crucial at these trying times for our country to do whatever is possible within our power to unleash the progressive S.F. HOLY TRINITY PANEGYRI continued from page 11

forces of our society to foster competitiveness and sustainable growth. There is another side of Greece that exists but needs to emerge and take charge. The technical talent in Greece is immense. There is hope. You graduated from the National Technical University of Athens; hence you left as an adult for the U.S. to continue your studies. What motivated you to stay in the U.S. and build your career here? This is the million dollar question for me. The U.S. clearly offers unique opportunities for smart and energetic people who are willing to take a risk and dedicate their time and efforts to a goal. What is required is a passion for an idea, dedication and commitment to make it happen and willingness to take some risks along the way. This was clearly true in my case. However, clearly this is not a path I recommend for everyone. How Greek do you feel? Under which circumstances? I feel very Greek all the time. I have many friends and relatives in Greece and I am in close touch with them. The “Greekness” in me is a constant and cannot change. This, of course, does not prevent me for being fully integrated in the U.S. society. As a matter of fact, I see it as an asset. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be able to offer my services to Greece at this very critical junction of its history. welcomed over 1000 people to Holy Trinity for the Panegyri and some have even decided to stay and join our vibrant and growing community,” says Fr. Aris Metrakos, Holy Trinity’s proistamenos. “We’re blessed we can share this special day with so many.” The Panegyri follows the 10:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 19, at Holy Trinity Church, 999 Brotherhood Way in San Francisco. boys were taught to help the younger ones. Jim’s life included adventure and challenge. He was an ethical hunter and fisherman who gave to nature. He adventured in several countries. He also led a number of groups of hunters to South America to help farmers to reduce in number the thousands of birds who were destroying their crops. The birds they shot were cooked to feed the hungry families. Jim joined The Church of The Holy Cross, Belmont, California in 1955 and served on the Parish Council in the 1960’s. Because of his concern for the Sunday School children crossing the street to use the oil station lavatories, he hired and paid for two builders to add a lavatory building with two lavatories attached to the Church. He enjoyed showing adventure slides to raise money for the Youth Group, also.
Jim was a member of the Mzuri Wildlife Foundation since it’s inception. The members are all ethical hunters who give back to replace the wildlife in Africa and other places in the world. As a factory representative, he was able to obtain items in addition to his own donated items for fund raising. On one occasion he raised $100,000 for the Foundation. Mzuri means good in Swahili. Jim earned many awards and honors for his efforts, including “…the 1986 California Water Fowl Association Life Time Achievement Award for greekfuneralmemorials@gmail.com
