e spend a lot of time speaking and writing about the importance of being present every Sunday for the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. We do not however spend much time speaking and writing about the importance of the service that precedes the Divine Liturgy: the Orthros / Matins service. The Orthros service is both a prayerful, inspirational and educational time. Through the beautiful hymns and profound prayers of Orthros service the faithful present not only praise and thank God, but are instructed and illumined about the many truths of the Orthodox faith.

O

rthros is not only a time of preparation for the faithful but for the priest as well. Through some of the specific prayers of the Orthros service, the priest is given the opportunity to get focused and to prepare himself for the forthcoming Divine Liturgy. Orthros is also the time when the priest prepares the Gifts placed upon the Holy Altar during the Divine Liturgy. The following few paragraphs offer a brief explanation of some of the preparatory highlights that take place during Sunday morning’s Orthros service.

A

fter the traditional prayers of the Trisagion said by the priest and chanter, the chanter then begins to read the Six Psalms (3, 38, 63, 88, 103, 143). The major themes of the psalms are rejoicing in God, forgiveness and courage. While the Six Psalms are being read the priest prays the twelve morning prayers on behalf of the community and more specifically, for those present. The major themes of those prayers are thanksgiving, glorification and illumination. From this point forward there are three major events or activities that take place with regard to priestly responsibilities.

T

he first event takes place while the resurrection Kathismata (the hymns while sitting) and the Evlogetaria (the blessed hymns) are chanted. Like most hymns, these hymns are hymns of instruction and praise. As these hymns are offered the priest stands on the solea before the Royal Gate and is now ready to take his Kairo (recite his personal prayers of preparation). This prayer of preparation (Kairo) is a brief service in which the priest venerates the icons and asks for forgiveness from both God and any faithful present. The Orthros service continues until the chanting of the Katavasia. The Katavasia are a seasonal set of hymns specific to a certain feast or time of year.

T

he second event takes place as the Katavasia are being chanted. It is at this time that the priest puts on his vestments. He begins with the Sticharion / tunic (a one piece Continues on p. 3 >>>

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL Christ is in our Midst! I hope you are enjoying the Fall season now that the kids are all in school and our families are back to our regular routines. Of course, the main routine is attending Church regularly with our families and worshipping together as One community. It does my heart good to see so many families together in Church partaking of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. My fellow parishioners, Sunday is a special day not because you can sleep in, catch up on chores from the weeks activities and watch football but because we can come together and experience the Divine Liturgy together. The rest of the day is really meaningless without it. The highlight of my week is Sunday morning being in Church worshipping with each and every one of you. Did you get a chance to read the “How Can we Keep our Children in Church” article in last month’s newsletter? Father Andrew brought this article to the parish council’s attention a few months back and having met Doria Saros personally last year when I was in Minneapolis I asked to have this article printed in our newsletter. I have had a few of you tell me how inspiring this article was and, parents, believe me you will love it as it puts everything in perspective. If you haven’t read this

article PLEASE look at last month’s newsletter or go online to theshepherdnews.com. One part I would like to highlight from the article is “Time after time we have observed that the youth who really connect with the Church are those whose parents have truly and joyfully connected themselves with the Church. Parents who continue to grow in the faith through reading, bible study, retreats, service, frequent and prompt worship attendance, Orthodox Community fellowship, and who do so with joy in their hearts… it is their children that we see in Church School, at GOYA, at Church Camp, and at 9:45 sharp on Sunday mornings … into adulthood”. On Tuesday, October 9th, the Legacy and Gift Planning Committee will be hosting the Seniors Luncheon in the Church Hall. Please come and hear Themis Gallanis give us some information about this important Church committee and how all of us can help. Please RSVP with the Church office or by contacting Sophia Mellos by October 4th so the proper amount of food can be ordered. It’s still not too late to sign your children or yourself up for our Greek School. As we all know having the grasp of more than one language can help us in life in so many ways. If you are Continues on p. 14 >>>

inner robe). As he prays and pulls the robe over his head, it reminds him of the purity of the/his baptismal garment. The priest then puts the Epitrichelion (Stole) over his neck. The Stole is the sign of his priestly order and constantly reminds him of God’s grace. The priest then ties the Zoni (belt) around his waist. The Zoni (belt) reminds the priest that it is God who strengthens, protects and guides him in his ministry. The priest then places the Epimanika (cuffs) over each of his wrists. The priest then puts the Phelonion (cape) over his head. Having finished vesting the priest then washes his hands. Needless to say throughout the vesting process the priest recites many prayers appropriate to each garment.

T

he third event takes place just after the morning Gospel reading, the 50th Psalm and the incense that is offered in honor of the Theotokos. Following the offering of incense the priest prepares the bread and wine, (the Gifts) which will become the Pure Body and Precious Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Taking a round loaf of bread (Prosforon/ the bread offering) the priest begins to pray and extracts three pieces from the top of the bread. He forms a cube from the middle of the bread, which is called the Lamb representing Jesus Christ. He then cuts a triangular piece representing the Theotokos and places it on the left side of the Lamb.

T

he last piece offered is a small square, which represents the nine orders of saints and places it on the right side of the Lamb. After the appropriate prayers are offered, the priest then says prayers for the living and for the dead. He prays for both the health and wellbeing, and for the peaceful repose of the servants of God. All these pieces are placed on the disk or paten and along with the chalice filled with wine and water, are what the priest is holding during the Great Entrance. The priest then finishes the Service of Preparation by covering the gifts to be offered (the bread and the wine) with the Kallimata (three piece embroidered coverings / veils).

A

s the chanter offers the hymns of praise (The Exapostilaria and the Lauds) the Orthros service is nearing its end. Standing before the Holy Table, the priest offers the last two sets of sentence prayers. As the Doxology begins, the priest censes the whole Church. Returning to the front of the Holy Altar, he asks for God’s peace, strength and forgiveness as he begins the Divine Liturgy. Continues on p. 3 >>>

M

y Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I know that in some cases it is all that we can do to make it on time for the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. We hardly even think about what may come before that celebration. However, much does come before it and it is important that we are at least aware of it and what basically takes place during that time. As was mentioned above the Orthros service allows us the time to fully prepare for the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, instead of walking in “cold.” I pray that you consider joining us for this important time of preparation, inspiration and education which for us begins at 8:30am on Sunday mornings.

I

understand that it may not be the “right” time for some of us (doing all we can to get ourselves and/or our kids ready in the morning, driving a long ways to get to St. Spyridon, work responsibilities, etc.) and that is alright for now. However, for those who may not have even been aware of what takes place in the morning and the importance of Orthros, please reconsider, join us and receive the blessings offered through the Orthros service.

NEWS FROM THE LOFT Dear Friends of the Choir,

Dear Seniors,

We hope you and your families enjoyed a nice summer. The ecclesiastical year has begun and we are off to a busy start! The choir has been working throughout the summer learning the Liturgical music of Dr. Tikey Zes. His pieces are beautiful while adding to the richness of our Liturgy. We have incorporated several different composers throughout the service that enhance our Liturgy.

Please join us at our next meeting on October 9th at 11am. The Legacy and Gift Planning Committee will be sponsoring a luncheon as a speaker will be introducing the purpose of the Legacy and Gift Planning Committee, their services, and how to utilize them. Hope you can make this event!

October is the month that all church musicians throughout the United States are honored. It is officially called “National Church Music Sunday”. We will honor our senior choir members, youth choir members, and cantors on Sunday, October 7th. It is always nice to show our appreciation for the dedication and hard work of these many volunteers. It is a labor of love that we give back to our community every Sunday throughout the year. October is proving to be a busy month. Sts Constantine and Helen and our own choir will be hosting a Church Music Institute workshop on October 13th at Sts Constantine and Helen. Our Metropolis Church Music Federation works hard, on a very small budget to provide these workshops so choirs can learn different music and sharpen their skills. This is just one of the many programs the Church Music Federation provides for our community choirs and directors. I thank the choir at Sts Constantine and Helen in advance for helping host this event. The youth choir and I have begun rehearsals and are excited to be back together again and begin the work ahead of us. The purpose of the Youth Choir is not only to teach them the Liturgical music of services, but most of all, to inspire them and “transition” them into the adult choir in the future. Learning music for the Folk Dance and Choral Festival competition is an added bonus, but not the reason we rehearse each week. Our main focus is serving our church, community, and being good role models while singing God’s praises! As always, we welcome anyone who loves to sing our hymns to join us up in the loft. Choir rehearsals are on Thursday evenings. We are a fun, loving, close knit group. Please join us. Katherine Meck Choir Master

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Philoptochos sends a heartfelt thank you to the St. Spyridon volunteers for Camp Agape 2012: Marina Dimas, George Fahouris, Christine & Nektarios Tradas, and Stella Weil. 28 families with children suffering from cancer and life threatening illnesses gathered Labor Day weekend in the beautiful Julian mountains for well deserved fellowship, rest, and relaxation. The families enjoyed numerous crafts, nature hikes, fishing, archery, sing a longs, a visit from Police and Fire Fighters, an ice cream social, and some luxurious time in the Camp Agape Spa. We met many news friends and shared special moments with them. It was bittersweet leaving camp and we wish them continued blessings for good health along their journey. May God be with them. The chapter enjoyed the annual Welcome Back Luncheon on Saturday, September 15th. Tony Petroulias with Amvrosia Catering provided a delicious and refreshing brunch. The chapter heard a report from the 2012 National Philoptochos Biennial Congress held in Phoenix, Arizona. Highlights included a recent donation of 160K to non-governmental relief agencies in Greece to help relieve suffering brought on from the economic collapse. Philoptochos raised more than $2.9 million for the Children’s Medical Fund since 1989. Social Services committee stated that nearly $310K in emergency grants had been made in the past year to help stave off eviction and foreclosure, pay for funerals, supply heating oil, and help pay for homecare costs. Since 2010 Philoptochos has donated $2.8 million to various philanthropic endeavors and ministries since January 2010. As an organization, we are poised for the next generation, into our own offices through the purchase of a building in New York called the Philoptochos Center of Philanthropy. Lastly, the convention was marked Philoptochos’ 80th birthday. A gala was held at the unique Musical Instrument Museum, where Philoptochos 6

ΝΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ members from the Metropolis regions were honored with the Agape award. Our chapter’s Agape Award nominee is Julie Karagianides, documented by a certificate of merit and signed by Archbishop Dimitrios and National President Aphrodite Skedeas. Dr. Eve Tibbs dean of St. Katherine’s College and professor gave an enlightening talk on “Busy Women and the lives of our Saints”. On behalf of the chapter, we send our gratitude to Dr. Eve Tibbs and to Michelle Defelippi for chairing this most successful and informative luncheon. Next up, we would like to invite the community: In affirming our appreciation of our Church Musicians Sunday, on October 7th. A special prayer service will take place on Sunday, November 4th as we honor our Veterans and Military (Veterans and Military Appreciation Sunday. Proceeds from the fellowship hour will be matched by the chapter and donated to the Armed Services YMCA. Celebrate Thanksgiving with Philoptochos. This time honored gathering will take place on Sunday, November 11 with details to follow. The Anthousa Chapter of Philoptochos announces that it will be celebrating its 75th diamond jubilee anniversary on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12, 2013. The two day event will include: Reception with the annual Opportunity Drawing to win a gorgeous Kostantino collectable jewel, new this year is the Designer Accessory Gallery, followed by a gourmet spring luncheon with live auction, nostalgic DVD presentation, and historic couture EnVogue fashion show. The following Sunday will culminate with a Hierarchal Liturgy celebrated with Metropolitan Gerasimos as he will preside over the Anthousa Award ceremony, followed by a Philoptochos hosted fellowship hour. Mark the date as we celebrate this hallmark occasion. No special invitation is necessary, if you would like to serve on this dynamic and historic committee, we need you. Please see any of our board members, or contact me. Invite, Embrace, Involve Alexandra Mouzas, Anthousa Chapter President

Do you know remember that our Epiphany Cross-Dive and luncheon celebration will take place on Sunday, January 6, 2013? As you know the date of Epiphany falls on a Sunday just once every 5 years so we are planning a San Diego GOYA retreat on Saturday, January 5th wrapping up with the cross-dive and luncheon celebration on Sunday January 6th. As you know, I have chaired the cross-dive luncheon for the past 3 years and have been anxiously awaiting this date. We have a small group of parishioners planning this weekend’s memorable activities but we could always use some more help so if you are interested please see me ASAP.

Of course, with Fall arriving the second general assembly of the year is right around the corner on Sunday, December 2, 2012 immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Look for an agenda in the November Monthly Newsletter. Please plan on attending this important meeting of our Church as our preliminary 2013 budget will be presented as will our 2012 Festival financials. Lastly, please consider taking a leadership role by chairing or co-chairing our 44th Annual Greek Festival which will take place June 7 – 9, 2013. I would love to see a non parish council member take on this role next year. As you know I asked this same question last year and four Parish Council members stepped up in 2012. Please pray about this and seriously consider chairing or co-chairing next year’s Festival. You and the Church will both benefit by your generosity. If you are interested please see me after Church or call the Church office. I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church on Sunday mornings. In Christ’s holy name, Bill Navrides
