Dear Readers: When the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute (PAOI) began to plan the celebration of its Frosene 30th anniversary they embraced a theme that embodies Phillips its spirit with “Keeping the Dream Alive.” Editor It is fitting then that they chose two noble men to honor this occasion: The Very Reverend Dr. Leonides C. Contos of Blessed Memory (page 5), founder of the PAOI, and George M. Marcus (page 4), philanthropist, advocate and supporter of the Hellenic spirit. Once again, the Getty Villa presented another beloved Greek treasure at its seventh annual outdoor theater last month with the production of Euripides’ Helen. “Beginning with the first woman,” writes Mavis Manus, “the ancient Greeks believed that female beauty was intrinsically linked to bad character.” Enter Helen of Troy. This HJ spotlight is featured on page 6. Dr. Effie Liakopoulou is a specialist in Hematology with interests in Hematological Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation. Her distinguished career is chronicled this month in Theo Dracopoulos Argue’s column, which you’ll find on page 9. PAOI to honor George M. Marcus

he Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute (PAOI) will honor Dr. George M. Marcus, Ph.D. for his many humanitarian contributions when it celebrates its 30th anniversary on October 27, 2012. Keeping the Dream Alive will be held at the San Francisco Ritz Carlton Hotel. George Marcus is well known in the world of higher education, leadership and governance. At the age of four, George Moutsanas immigrated with his family from Limni on the island of Evia in Greece to San Francisco, California, where he completed elementary and high school. From San Francisco State University he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. Enjoying education, George Marcus also earned degrees from the Harvard School of Owners/Presidents Management Program as well as the Georgetown University Leadership Program. Having founded the Marcus and Millichap Company in 1971, he became a success story. George Marcus is a well-known Hellene who has made many contributions to humanity. He is also a leader

in education; a former 12-year member of The Board of Regents of the University of California, and he has also served on the California State University Board of Trustees. Currently, Marcus is a member of the California State Universities Foundation Board of Governors. George Marcus has supported many educational programs. He promoted to a high degree the International Center for Creative Arts at San Francisco State University, as well as a variety of exhibits at the San Francisco Museums. In 1989, he was a generous patron of “Holy Image, Holy Space,” Icons and Frescoes from Greece at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco.

This exhibit became a very popular one at which the PAOI Women’s Board hosted a special opening night reception. George Marcus is Chairman of the Board for Modern Greek Studies at San Francisco State University. For several years he served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer of the IOCC, International Orthodox Christian Charities, the humanitarian arm of the Orthodox Church in North America. He is a member of Leadership 100. He is also a founder and board member of the Elios Society, a charitable organization for the promotion of Hellenic culture. For his numerous good deeds to give back to the greater community, Marcus has received highest honors. In 1991, he was awarded the prestigious AXION Award from the Hellenic American Professional Society of California for his education, for reaching high goals in his endeavors and for giving back to humanity. The Ellis Island Medal of Honor was bestowed on him and he also earned the Elios Cultural Achievement Award and the Patriarch Athenagoras I Humanities Award. In 2006, Marcus chaired the successful Fifth Annual Conference on “The Future of Hellenism in America.” In his opening address he honored his Hellenic roots. In 2008, Marcus was instrumental in organizing the National Hellenic Society to support worthy causes and to provide resources to promote Hellenic ideals. In 2009, Marcus was honored with the AHEPA Archbishop Iakovos Humanitarian Award. He is an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, Order of Saint Andrew of the Greek Orthodox Church. In 2012, he received the Compassion at Work Award from the IOCC as one of five visionary men selected to receive the inaugural award for their extraordinary philanthropic contributions to the Mission of IOCC and its continued success in the past 20 years. Remembering The Very Reverend Dr. Leonidas C. Contos By Virginia Lagiss

he Very Reverend Dr. Leonidas C. Contos of Blessed Memory will be remembered for establishing the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute (PAOI) in 1981, and for creating an Orthodox presence at the Graduate Theological Union when the PAOI celebrates its 13th anniversary on October 27, 2012. The grand event will be held at the San Francisco Ritz Carlton Hotel. The Very Reverend Dr. Leonidas C. Contos of Blessed Memory was respectfully and fondly called Father Leon by many who knew him. Father Leon is also remembered as the “Prince of Priests” and the “Mighty Oak.” In 1981, Father Leon began to develop the Orthodox Institute in Berkeley, California. At the same time the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley encouraged the Greek Orthodox Diocese of San Francisco to become part of the GTU. Bishop Anthony of Blessed Memory asked Father Leon to organize the Orthodox Institute at GTU. Father Leon, with great vision, developed a vibrant and respected Orthodox Institute at the GTU that exists today as a permanent memorial to his efforts. In 1987, Father Leon was elected to the GTU Faculty. At the same time, the Greek Orthodox Institute on Hearst Avenue, Berkeley announced its new name, The Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute, which commemorated the centennial birth of the Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras I, who was a distinguished ecumenist. From ORTHODOXIA, September 1995: “For the PAOI, he was the inspiration that led us to develop the Institute to its recognition as a Patriarchal Institute, a serious center for the study of Orthodoxy and an a ctive/visible witness of Orthodoxy at this vital and ecumenical locale of national and international significance.” Father Leon encouraged women to be active in the PAOI. Paul Manolis, a former director, organized a group of women into what became the Women’s Board in 1988. Helen Lambros, a dynamic individual, organized the Southern California Auxiliary. Both women’s groups are active

and work to raise awareness and funds to support the mission of the PAOI. Father Leon was born in 1920 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He completed his undergraduate studies in Theology at Holy Cross Theological School in Ponfret, Connecticut in 1943. He married Athena Evergates and was ordained to the priesthood in 1944. He has a daughter, Tanya, and a grandson, Alexander. His first parish was in Stamford, Connecticut. Then, he served as Dean of Saint Sophia Cathedral, Los Angeles, from 1951 to 1965. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Oxford, England Honorary Doctorates were bestowed upon him from the University of Southern California, University of Lowell, University of Bridgeport, and Hellenic College. Father Leon became Director of Communications and Ecumenical Relations for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese in 1965, and from 1966 to 1972 he served as President of Hellenic College / Holy Cross Theological School. In 1972 he became senior editor of the “Saturday Review.” In 1979, Bishop Anthony introduced Father Leon to the Parish Council of The Church of The Holy Cross, Belmont, CA, where he served as their new Pastor. During his tenure at Holy Cross, the Church community was very pleased with their beloved Father Leon. They discovered his charismatic personality, as well as his special style and spirit which created a pervasive atmosphere of calmness and dignity that well befitted the perfection that surrounded everything he did: parish ministry, scholarship, teaching, writing and even artistic talents. Before he left Holy Cross in 1989 to serve as Vicar General of the Diocese of San Francisco until 1992, the Belmont congregation honored him at two grand banquets. Among his many honors, Father Leon received the AXION Award in 1983 from the Hellenic American Professional Society of California for his education, his reaching of high goals in his endeavors and giving back to the community at large. In 1993, George Marcus chaired a dinner show at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco to honor Father Leon. For this successful event, Helen Lambros wrote, produced

and directed her delightful “Contosbury Tales” which was performed on stage. Father Leon was a distinguished teacher, author and translator of numerous works relating to Orthodoxy. In 1990, newspapers praised highly the Very Reverend Dr. Leonidas C. Contos for his dignified and erudite service as a translator for Patriarch Demetrios of Blessed Memory during the Patriarch’s visit throughout the United States. Father Leon was President of PAOI, and concurrently served as the first Alexander G. Spanos Professor of Orthodox Studies at the GTU. He stated that to him it was a privilege to teach the riches of Orthodox history to graduate students. In 1995 he became Professor Emeritus. He was member of Leadership 100. When asked how he could accomplish so much in his life, he responded, “I never really thought of trying to achieve anything. I just set out to do the best I could at whatever came my way.” Extolled for his work, the Very Reverend Dr. Leonidas C. Contos, Father Leon as many still call him with love and respect, fell asleep in the Lord in 1995. AXIOS! May his memory be eternal. In 2004 the GTU and the PAOI began offering a Masters Degree in Orthodox Christianity. Today, we are all honored with the presence of His Eminence, Metropolitan Nikitas as Director of PAOI. eginning with the first woman, the ancient Greeks believed that female beauty was intrinsically linked to bad character. Therefore Helen of Troy – the most beautiful woman of her day – was accordingly also viewed as the most destructive. The playwright Euripides, however, defied the cultural preconceptions of his time to show Helen as a paradigm not only of beauty but also of virtue.

Euripides’ Helen was the seventh annual outdoor theatrical production at the Getty Villa in September. Directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera, artistic director of Los Angeles-based Playwrights’ Arena, this production featured a new adaptation by playwright Nick Salamone and a score by composer and musical director David O.

In Helen he asserts that the rationale for the war was faked from the start: an illusion. (By modern extension, the illusion concerning weapons of mass destruction.) A particularly fine performance was given by badly wounded soldier Robert Almodovar, who had the strongest and most effective speech about the pointlessness of war. Charles McNulty of the L.A. Times wrote, “The production, enriched with Adam Flemming’s video design and Mylette Nora’s flamboyant costumes, is a jaunty visual stew.” The Getty Villa’s annual outdoor theater performance is part of an innovative theater program that enhances the visitor’s

Over 100 contributors shared 400 recipes, including recipes from over 20 members who have departed this life as well as recipes for all the menu items served at the festival. Lenten recipes throughout the book are marked with a cross for easy identification.
