very year on September Fourteenth the Church celebrates one of the twelve major feast days of the ecclesiastical calendar: The Exaltation of the Precious and Life Saving Cross. Like many major feast days there are three Gospel lessons attached to this feast day: the Gospel before the feast day (John 3:13-17), the Gospel on the day of the feast (John 19:6-30) and the Gospel lesson read on the following Sunday of the feast day (Mark 8:34-9:1).

F

rom the Gospel lesson before the feast day we read about the trial and crucifixion of our Lord and Savior. On the day of the feast day we read about the Old Testament account of Moses in the wilderness lifting up a pole in the form of a serpent, which preempts Christ being lifted up on the cross; and from the Gospel lesson after the feast day we read about Jesus instructing us to deny ourselves, pick up our cross and follow Him. Thus, we have the Old Testament prophesy, the New Testament fulfillment and the divine instruction from Christ Himself. Moses proclaimed it, Jesus fulfilled it and now it is up to each and every one of us to live it.

I

t is important to remember that Jesus was unjustly accused of several crimes and was brought before the authorities and before Pontius Pilate; and again, was found innocent. Although Jesus could have called upon a legion of angels he said nothing in His defense. Thus, He was unjustly tried and convicted of crimes He never committed and for that He was spat upon, tormented and whipped; and yet He never uttered an unkind word. Nails were driven through His hands and feet and yet, no cruel or unbecoming words came from His mouth. He then accepted the cross because He knew the Father’s will and what would flow from the cross: forgiveness of sin and our salvation.

B

eing human after the fall in the garden means carrying within ourselves corruptive passions and from one of the feast day hymns three truths are observed: 1) we are still being deceived in this life; 2) it is our corruptive passions which allow us to be deceived; and 3) we still need the power and protection of Christ’s cross to help us in our process of salvation. It is by deception that we become greedy, jealous, envious and all the rest. It is by deception that we, like Adam, are led away from God and commit sin, which is of itself, separation from God. Thus, since we are all born from Adam we all posses some kind of passion which has the potential to separate us from the One who truly loves us. The passion of lust, anger, laziness, selfishness, greed and the rest all have Continues on p. 3 >>>

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL Christ is in our Midst! Happy Ecclesiastical New Year! On September 1st not only is summer drawing to a close but the Church’s Ecclesiastical year has begun. This means our Sunday School program is about to begin. Our teachers and director are working very hard to make sure our children have a wonderful Sunday School experience. Parents now it is our turn. My request to all of you (Parents, Grandparents, Godparents, etc.) is the same one as last year to please sign your children up for our Sunday School program before the first day of class which is Sunday, September 9th. Registration forms were in the August monthly newsletter as well as this one and registration tables will be set up in the hall following the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. The sooner our Director and Teachers know how many children to expect the easier it is for them to purchase the proper supplies. Please remember Sunday School is the greatest way for the children of our Parish to learn about our Beloved Orthodox Faith. Secondly, I ask you please bring your children to the Divine Liturgy on time and then to Sunday School both on a regular basis. Our new Sunday School leadership deserves our full support. Just as we take our kids to school every day we must bring them to Sunday School every week. They will not only be learning about their precious Orthodox faith but will establish friendships with other Orthodox Youth that will last them a lifetime. As part of a new effort to highlight and thank those who have given to the Church in the past please read the first article in our series of those whose legacy gifts have made a lasting impact on our Church and community. Please see page 5 which has an article about Mr. Gregory Trompas written by his grandchildren. If you have a loved one whose story we can share please send it into the Church office. Your Legacy and Gift Planning committee will be featuring other members of our community in future newsletters that have designated St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in their wills or estates. The mission of the Legacy and Gift Planning Committee is to plan for, solicit, and manage long-term and large-scale donations to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. The Legacy and Gift Planning Committee also coordinates the capital campaign to raise funds for the future development of the parish. As one of our members said at a recent meeting, “…what do I want to be remembered for when I am gone and what will my Legacy be to the Church.” If you would like more information about this committee please contact chairman Themis Gallanis or the Church office. It is with great sadness that I announce the news that Anne Marie Almaraz has resigned from the parish council effective immediately. Anne Marie you will truly be missed at the meetings and your enthusiasm and commitment towards God’s Holy

2

Church are unwavering. On behalf of the Parish Council and all the parishioners thank you so much for all your hard work. Of course, Anne Marie has a very good reason for resigning she will be giving birth to her second child any day now. Between working full time, taking care of her young son Thomas and her husband Ramon she deserves a break. With the month of September beginning and only 4 months left in the calendar year I want to take this opportunity to ask you to consider serving your Church on the Parish Council. We have a diverse group of devoted Orthodox Christians that serve on the parish council this year and like all of you we are very busy with families and work. It is VERY important that we all take a turn on the parish council (young and old alike) as we all have different talents and treasures to offer to our beloved St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. Please don’t expect the parish council or our Priest to do it all, there is just not enough time in the day for the 16 of us, WE NEED YOU! As you know by now in my 1 ½ years as the President of the Parish Council I am not afraid to ask for help but I do love when you step up without being asked. Remember the Parish Council has two year terms with the next one beginning on January 1, 2013. If you are interested please see me after Church or call me and we can talk. I guarantee, you will benefit by this worthy endeavor and you will truly be blessed as you help our ministries and programs continue to grow and thrive. As I have mentioned in previous articles Bill Marianes will be with us in a few short weeks. Have you made your reservation yet for the September 22nd seminar retreat? PLEASE call the Church office today and join myself, the Parish Council, Father Andrew and the heads of all the Church ministries for this half day educational seminar which will include, besides other things, a complimentary luncheon. I have said it before but I must repeat it again, you will be inspired by Mr. Marianes as I promise he will strengthen your love and my love for God’s Holy Church and motivate us to deepen our faith in Jesus Christ. Lastly, please start to pray and reflect on your stewardship offering for 2013. The stewardship committee will begin the campaign in October and as we have said in the past our goal is to have all families of St. Spyridon become pledged financial stewards and that our combined stewardship pays for all the operating expenses of our Church. This is a lofty goal but with all of our help I believe in my heart it is a very achievable goal and one we can accomplish in 2013. I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church on Sunday mornings. In Christ’s holy name, Bill Navrides

rom Holy Scripture we read in several places Today is the day... now is the acceptable time... My Brothers and Sisters in Christ today, right now Christ and His Church offers us an opportunity to begin anew. At every divine service of the Church and especially at the celebration of the Divine Liturgy the faithful are given a gift and that gift is the opportunity to recognize and overcome negative passions and to start our spiritual walk unsullied once again. It is however, up to each and every one of us to be bold and mature enough to observe and recognize those passions which keep us from God and to nail them to the cross of Christ.

T

his year’s services for the celebration of the Exaltation of the Precious Cross are as follows: Thursday evening, September 13th - Vespers at 7:00pm; Friday morning, September 14th Orthros at 9:00 with the Divine Liturgy and the procession of the Cross to follow.

Honoring:

Connie Mastorakos Ralph September 29, 2012 6:00 p.m. Cypress Room St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church 3655 Park Blvd. San Diego, CA 92103

Mr. Gregory Trompas was one of the original founders of the Greek Orthodox community of San Diego in 1927, and served as Treasurer on the first Parish Council, and then as President from 1937 to 1939. Born in Naoussa, Greece in 1886, he immigrated to the U.S. at age 18, arriving in Ellis Island in 1904. After years of working in mostly food-related jobs across the country, he settled in San Diego in 1912 with his new bride, Maria, born in Stuttgart, Germany. His first job here was as the ice cream maker at the U.S. Grant Hotel. He and his wife worked hard raising their 4 children, and building their own ice cream and then confectionary businesses. He also made many real estate investments in San Diego, and became a very successful businessman. Mr. Trompas loved his culture and faith, and was able to give generously during his lifetime. He donated to the building of the original St. Spyridon Church on 24th and F Street, and initiated the fundraising efforts for building the current church on Park Blvd with this $10,500 donation. He also erected the St. Gregory Chapel in Greenwood Memorial Park in 1956. While Mr. Trompas was immersed in the San Diego community, he never forgot his homeland; he sent money back home, brought relatives to America, and donated 6,000 acres of useable forest and farmland near Naoussa for the benefit of poor families to make a homestead. Mr. Trompas died in Naoussa in 1967. It is important to note that even after his death Mr. Trompas was a great benefactor. He had the foresight to include St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church as a beneficiary of his estate. Through his living trust, St. Spyridon received regular distributions from his estate beginning in 1968 through 2009, as unrestricted gifts to be used as the church needed. The trust terminated in 2009, at which time the church received its final distribution of approximately $95,000.00. This amount has been set aside in the Choregos fund to be used, with the guidance of Mr. Trompas’ surviving family, on future church projects. The Legacy and Gift Planning Committee is ready to help with your gift made through wills and living trusts, beneficiary designations for retirement plans, and more. For more information, please contact the Church office.

G.O.Y.A. NEWS We hope you all had a great summer. I know we had vacations, sports events, and summer camp, just to mention a few things that kept us busy throughout the summer months. Also, several Goyans traveled abroad, which is always exciting to hear about, some visiting monasteries and blessed Holy Sites. How exciting! As our seniors prepare to depart for college, we wish them well. We will miss you all. We here at home are getting ready to start the new school year, and along with that, starting Sunday School. Several Goyans are moving up into the senior Sunday School class, which I know is very exciting for them. They have been waiting for “Mr. K’s class!” Our last summer gathering was so successful! Thank you Michael Balourdas for organizing the beach barbeque and bon fire. We had so many Goyans there from St. Spyridon as well as many from St. Constantine and Helen. We look forward to many more gatherings together. It is always fun to be together with old friends and to make some new. The weather was perfect, and the food and fellowship, as always, was great. As this article goes to print we are looking forward to our Pool Party at the Balourdas residence. We will look at the specific roles for our GOYA Board members as we look forward to the next ecclesiastical year and our new board members. We will also plan our calendar for the upcoming year. Our next GOYA gathering will be on Saturday September 15th, so be watching for an email flier. Looking forward to the 2012-2013 year, all God’s Blessings to you and your families. If you would like to join our GOYA group (all sixth graders thru 12th graders) or you are not on our email list, please contact Paulette Gallanis at Paulette@cox.net or see our GOYA president Michael Balourdas.

GREEK SCHOOL It is amazing how fast the time flies; it seems it was only yesterday when we said goodbye to our students, wishing them a playful summertime, and now we are already prepared to welcome them back to school. Registration will take place on Sunday, September the 2nd and Sunday, September the 9th at the church hall after the Divine Liturgy. Classes will start on September 13th (4:30 to 6:30 p.m.), September 14th (4:00 to 6:00 p.m.), and September 15th (2:00 to 4:00 p.m.) We offer classes for children (five years and older), teenagers, and adults of all levels. New students will be placed based on their age and knowledge of the Greek language. Experts agree and we all know by experience that a second language benefits everyone in multiple ways. Won’t you help your child, children, or yourself to acquire that special knowledge? The Greek language is an important link between the children’s intellectual and emotional growth and their ancestral and cultural heritage. Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your children’s education and their chance to meet old and new friends. I would like to remind you that high school students can earn credits for high school graduation and college entrance. Attention adults: We offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes, with flexible hours and affordable prices. For information related to the Greek Language School, please don’t hesitate to call me at (619) 282-3160. Respectfully yours, Helen Gevas Director, Greek Language School

Please join your St. Spyridon Focus team for a luncheon on Sunday September 16th following liturgy. We’ll be meeting in the church hall. The goal is to raise money for San Diego FOCUS’s local ministry of providing food, occupation, clothing, understanding and shelter for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are less fortunate. Adult lunch is $15.00 Child (12 and under) lunch is $10.00 6

To ALL the Faithful Members of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, We have the pleasure and honor to welcome Bill Marianes to our community on Saturday, September 22, 2012. Mr. Marianes will be offering an exciting seminar in the Cypress Room about the importance of Living Our Greek Orthodox Faith on a daily basis and what that truly means for each of us as Greek Orthodox Christians. Bill serves on the Archdiocesan Council and is a vital part of the Archdiocese’s National Stewardship Ministries and an integral part of its Legal Committee. He also serves the Metropolis of Atlanta in many and varied ways: he is the General Counsel of that Metropolis; he is on the Atlanta Metropolis Council and has been appointed to many of its committees. We had the privilege to hear Bill Marianes speak during the 2011 Metropolis ClergyLaity Assembly at St. Nicholas Ranch and at the recent 2012 National Clergy-Laity Congress in Phoenix, AZ. All who heard him were encouraged and inspired and we are sure that he will inspire and motivate you to deepen your faith in Jesus Christ and His Church. Your attendance at this seminar in September is very important, so please mark your calendar from now. We encourage you all to attend, as this will not only enrich you but your entire family as well. We are asking for your help in spreading the word to your family and friends, and to all your “Koumbaroi” not only at St. Spyridon but to the entire Orthodox community. To have Bill Marianes visit our community is truly a blessing. We look forward to seeing you and everyone you know on Saturday, September 22, 2012 from 10AM to 3PM in the Cypress Room. A complimentary lunch will be served. Please do mark your calendar today and make every effort to be with us. May God continue to bless you and your families and our beloved Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Parish. In His Service, Fr. Andrew Scordalakis, Parish Priest

How Can We Keep Our Children in the Church?

offer opportunities to learn and to grow spiritually, in a fun and joyful environment, utilizing a combination of discussion/lesson with games. Social events are a strong compliment to the learning programs mentioned above. However, Youth and Young Adult Ministry programs should protect against a purely social driven schedule, keeping multigoal programs at its core. Below are the Youth and Young Adult Ministry Goals of St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church:

By Doria Saros How Can We Keep Our Children In the Church? If only I had a nickel for every time a parent or parish council member asked me that question over my thirty plus years in Youth Ministry we could feed an orphanage in a third world country for many, many years! I began my tenure in youth ministry as a volunteer, then a paid parttime position, which grew into the full-time position in which I currently serve since 1998. The question of how to keep our children in the Church is one that the Archdiocese, the clergy and I have studied for all of those thirty plus years! Like many young youth ministries we started out by trying to “fix” the problem of how to help connect our kids to the church by offering simple social events, to make Church more “fun.” After a short-lived surge in attendance, and with the continued suggestions of parents we moved into “bigger” events on a more grand scale to include food, athletics and fun. We recruited more and more volunteers to help organize numerous activities ….but again after a brief surge attendance waned. The big question remained: How Can We Keep Our Children in the Church? As a ministry staff we believe the answer lies in much more than “fun.” While fun is important we know that social events alone aren’t enough. The ministry team wants more for our children than we may have had as kids. We believe the answer lies in “joy.” Anyone can find fun in the world; the difference is that God is within the truest concept of joy. If we want our children to feel connected to the Church, we must help them connect with God’s joy, so that they desire Him. An example of this is routinely experienced by many if not most of our campers each year. We ask the kids what they say to their friends upon returning from Summer Camp when asked if they had fun, and their response is very telling….they pause with a little frustration as they struggle to articulate something like, “well yeah, but it’s more than that….” Our kids return home a bit awe struck, because perhaps for the first time they have experienced a spiritual moment…they have experienced God’s joy….and God-willing they will never be the same, they will continue to pursue that joy. After living in true community for seven days, our campers play, pray, and want to stay together. It really goes back to our purpose in creation. God created us to choose Him, to love Him, to obey Him…..He created us in His Image, and He gave us as adults free will to choose to be in His Likeness. As parents we must joyfully choose for our children so that as adults, our youth will make similar choices. Choosing God “joyfully” is imperative as our kids are smart. Children generally learn to dislike the things that their parents dislike…and they learn to love the things that their parents love. So how do we help our children to desire Him, to know God’s joy? Perhaps we should start by rephrasing the question into something like: “How Can We Help Create the Desire for Our Children to Continue to Choose God as They Grow?” It’s about balance, ours is not a monastic community, but it’s more than simply barbeques, dances and basketball. As a church we must 14

Youth

and

Young

Adult Ministry Goals:

1. To offer inspirational programs that foster spiritual growth in Christ. 2. To offer religious education that applies to daily living. 3. To offer service to God and His Holy creation. 4. To offer fellowship that connects our youth and young adults to Christ, His Church, and the greater Orthodox community. As we study attendance lists of past social (fun) only events, it is very apparent that while fifty children might routinely attend the fun event, of those fifty perhaps only five remained regular attendees into adulthood. In contrast, when studying the attendance lists of multi-goal programs (that fulfill 3-4 of the stated goals) that were fun, but also intertwined with learning about God, serving one another and the sacramental life… many more of those attendees remained fervent in Church as adults. But one big challenge remains through time…and the challenge is the same for most of us adults every Sunday morning…. just getting the kids in the door. The devil is alive and active and never as apparent as when we’re trying to get to church! Let’s face it as soon as any child hears that he might have to learn something they don’t want to go…no matter how fun we make the experience. As parents we need to, “Train up your child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 I remember as a small child being groomed by my parents for Church Summer Camp from the time I was five…and I wasn’t old enough to participate until I was eight! But no matter, each year I heard them say, “You’re going to camp when you’re old enough.” Did you notice that I had no say in the matter? I was the child being guided by my parents. In much the same way that I had no choice about going to school, I also had no choice about my Orthodox education: Church School, Church Camps, Youth Group, Worship and Sacraments….I was going. We live in a society that stresses education, jobs, and success! While these things are important are they more so than our knowledge of God? Is our child’s education more important that his/her salvation? After all would we be content with our children finishing school in 6th grade? Are we so confident in our school’s educational system that we needn’t worry about how much our children are actually learning? Is it so important for our kids to love school that if they don’t like the

classes they shouldn’t have to go? If kids are too busy should they be able to skip homework? If they’re tired should they be able to sleep in and go late to school, or not at all? Then why is it acceptable for us as parents to allow this behavior in regard to our children’s spiritual growth and Orthodox education? Could it be that we as parents aren’t that connected to the Church? Could it be that it’s because of our own limited knowledge of the faith? Could it be that we are content and perhaps a little complacent about what we don’t know? I know that this was all true for me. As an Orthodox Christian of thirty years old, I never knew how wrong it was to arrive late to Liturgy….I just did what my parents by example taught me. At thirty-two years old and a regular attendee of Church I still could not articulate the basic differences between the Orthodox and any other faith…..because I never opened a book on my own. I never put any effort in continuing my Orthodox education after I completed Church School. Quite honestly (and God forgive me) it was because of my job in youth ministry and my role as a step parent that forced me to learn more about my faith….but thank God something got me back to study! It’s often said that, “The more you learn, the more you realize what you don’t know.” For many of us Orthodox parents this is sadly the case. As a result we rely almost solely on the Church to educate our children and to “make” them want to stay in the Church…and at the first sign that children balk at the idea of going to Church we panic! We panic because we don’t know what to do or say…..because we as parents don’t have the knowledge of God, the tools we ourselves need to pass on to our children. The Holy Fathers and Mothers of the Church instruct us to surround ourselves with Holiness and Holy people. It is interesting to consider what percentage of our own adult fellowship time is spent with other members of our Church community….. How would that percentage compare to a generation ago? Perhaps a more telling question is do we parents allow ourselves fellowship time in this day and age of

“busyness?” Some might suggest our parents today are not only overwhelmed (with jobs, transporting kids, and financial stress), but that they are starving for the kind and amount of fellowship that we had as children growing up. Is it possible that the desire for church provided fellowship events is more a reflection of parental desire to fellowship? The multi-goal programs of current Youth and Young Adult Ministry does provide fellowship….and more….it also provides an opportunity for spiritual growth! Time after time we have observed that the youth who really connect with the Church are those whose parents have truly and joyfully connected themselves with the Church. Parents who continue to grow in the faith through reading, bible study, retreats, service, frequent and prompt worship attendance, Orthodox Community fellowship, and who do so with joy in their hearts…..it is their children that we see in Church School, at GOYA, at Church Camp, and at 9:30 sharp on Sunday mornings….into adulthood. In study after study the greatest influence on the spiritual life of a child is…..their parent. - Group Magazine. The priest and the ministry team of the church have a responsibility and accountability to God and His Church to provide excellent opportunities for learning, joyful fellowship, service, and worship. The parents have a responsibility and accountability to God to guide their children through their own example, their ever increasing knowledge of the faith, and with the support of the Church. We’re never too old to learn. Let us all continue to learn and grow together as a community of faith, raising our children and young adults in His joy and love into adulthood and beyond. Doria Saros is the Youth Director for St. Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, MN. She is also actively involved with the St. Mary Orthodox Christian Summer Camp in Wisconsin.
