Prayer for the Blessing of the Palms Lord our God, You who are enthroned upon the Cherubim. You who have raised up Your might and sent forth Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that through His cross, burial and resurrection, He might save the world at His coming to Jerusalem, for His voluntary passion, the people that sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, taking the symbols of victory, the boughs of trees and branches of palms, went forth and proclaimed by anticipation the resurrection. May this same Lord, also now keep us and preserve us, who in imitation of them, bear in our hands palms and boughs of trees on this day of the feast, and like those multitudes and children offer to You hosanna. We pray that with hymns and spiritual songs, we may be deemed worthy of the life-giving resurrection on the third day, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom You are blessed, together with Your all-holy, and good, and life-giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages and to the ages. Amen.

O

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, his coming Sunday, April 8, 2012 the Church celebrates Palm Sunday. It is the day that Jesus is welcomed into Jerusalem and is hailed as King of the Jews: Hosanna! Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel (John 12:12-14). Palm Sunday is the day for those who had been waiting for the Messiah, the Deliver; the King of the Jews had finally come. Jesus had finally made His way to Jerusalem and was making His triumphant entry into that great city. The people had finally recognized Him as the King who had come to deliverer the Jews from Gentile rule and they were very, very excited. They waived palm branches and boughs off the tress to welcome this savior. Along with their garments they threw the branches down at His feet and sang hymns of praise. This man called Jesus had come and almost all of Jerusalem welcomed His triumphant entry. ut, as we know, Jesus was / is much more than a King to one tribe of people. He is much more than an ethnic Messiah, much more than one nation’s Liberator. He is much more than a cultural Savior. Jesus is the King of Kings, the Savior of our Souls and Bodies. Jesus is He who liberates us from sin and frees us from death and corruption, and therefore we too should wave palm branches and sing hymns of praise, crying out Hosanna in the highest. he above prayer offered on Palm Sunday over the palm crosses is not so much for the blessing of the palms, but more directly, a blessing upon those who believe in the above truths about Jesus Christ and His triumph over death and destruction … May this same Lord, also now, keep and preserve us, who in imitation of them, bear in our hands palms and boughs of trees on this day of the feast, and like those multitudes and children offer to You hosanna. We pray that with hymns and spiritual songs, we (too) may be deemed worthy of the life-giving resurrection on the third day… The palms are still symbols

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ Is Risen! I know this Paschal greeting is 2 weeks early but with Great and Holy Lent almost over and Holy Week right around the corner we will be exchanging these beautiful words with one another in a few short weeks. I hope and pray you are all planning on joining us for the Joint Pascha Picnic with Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church on April 15th at San Dieguito Park. What a wonderful way to welcome their new Priest Father Michael Sitaras to the San Diego community. Both Parish Councils are very excited and look forward to praying the Agape Service all together. The Park opens at 9:30 a.m., and the Agape Service is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. On March 10th the Parish Council took part in a day long retreat to discuss the short and long term goals of our community. The results of this retreat will be made available very soon. With 15 members of the Parish Council we thought it was time to all get on the same page with a Parish Mission / Vision statement and short and long term goals. The results will also be given to the newly formed St. Spyridon Community Vision & Strategy Committee. As you remember, this committee was approved by all of you at the November 27, 2011 Parish General Assembly meeting. I want to take this opportunity to thank the 315 individuals and families that have filled out their 2012 pledge cards. I feel like when we prayerfully fill out our pledge cards we are promising to be active in the life of the parish for the coming year in three ways: physically, spiritually and financially. In 2011, we had 360 individuals and / or families that filled out pledge cards. We also had another 140 who made “contributions” to the parish for a total of 500 and we thank them all for their financial support. Completing a pledge card verses offering a “contribution” assists

the Parish Council in their operating budget efforts. Thus, if you are not on the Pledged Stewardship list for 2012 please consider making an honorable pledge to our beloved St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church before Pascha. Please remember this pledge can and should be spread out over the entire year, which may allow for a greater amount being pledged if one takes the whole year to fulfill that pledged amount. As the 2012 Festival planning is in full swing I encourage all of you to join this small yet mighty group of hard working parishioners who are planning our Church’s largest fundraiser. The next Festival meeting will be Tuesday, April 24th at 6:30 pm in the Educational Hall. The baking and preparation schedule has been published so please help during the pre-planning and especially during the weekend of June 8th, 9th and 10th. Lastly, I want to wish my beautiful wife Stephanie a very happy 50th birthday the end of this month. Stephanie is my model of a dedicated and committed Orthodox Christian and I am truly blessed to call her my loving wife. I anxiously await seeing all of you during these final weeks of Great and Holy Lent / Holy Week and as the Sermon of St. John Chrysostom Archbishop of Constantinople says at the end of the Anastasi service “ Whosoever is a devout lover of God, let him enjoy this beautiful bright Festival. And whosoever is a grateful servant, let him rejoice and enter into the joy of his Lord.” I wish all of you a Kali Anastasi / Good and Fruitful Resurrection and I look forward to saying “Christ is Risen/Christos Anesti” to each and every one of you on Sunday April 15th. In Christ’s Holy Name, Bill Navrides

of Christ’s victory (over death) and from the prayer we are called to imitate those who were present in Jerusalem at the time of Christ’s triumphant entry into that city. y Brothers and Sisters in Christ, it is Tradition and the order / rubrics of the Church / Patriarchate require / instruct the faithful to hold/wave their palm branch throughout the Divine Liturgy as an outward expression of our inner devotion to Christ’s saving work in their life. The order/rubrics instruct the priest to distribute the palm crosses during the Orthros/Matins service. The palms are to be given to the faithful just prior to the chanting of the Praises, towards the end of Orthros (how appropriate) so the faithful can have the palms to hold during the Divine Liturgy. This practice, for the most part, does not take place today, how sad. Instead, the prayer is offered toward the end of the Divine Liturgy just before the dismissal. It is said that this is done out of pastoral concern, so that those who come late or straggle in toward the end of Divine Liturgy can have the opportunity to hear the prayer and receive the palm from the hand of the priest. I say, it is time we gradually reclaim our Orthodox ways and try to do as the Church/Patriarchate have instructed us to do. herefore, this Palm Sunday, April 8, 2012 we will be returning to that beautiful and meaningful practice of receiving the palm cross to hold throughout the Divine Liturgy. Thus, at 9:50am on Palm Sunday I will offer the brief prayer over the palms and then I will distribute a palm cross to all those present to hold during the Divine Liturgy as a way for you to once again welcome the King of Kings into your life. I hope and pray that as many of you as possible will accept the challenge to be present at 9:50 am to receive your blessing (see above prayer) and your palm. I truly understand the complexity and challenges that hinder some of us getting to the Divine Liturgy on time. I also get that when it comes to the ways of the Church some of us can try just a little harder to meet that challenge. For those who just cannot make it by 9:50am for the blessing and receiving of the palm during the Orthros Service, please know the palms will be available for you in the narthex.

NEWS FROM THE LOFT

SENIORS

Dear Friends of the Choir,

Dear Seniors,

Pascha is quickly approaching and with that, all the rehearsals to sing our hymns beautifully for our Lord and congregation. Please come to the Bridegroom service on Holy Tuesday and listen to the beautiful hymn of Kassiani. Her words about the fallen woman are very poignant to the meaning of Holy Week and are always so moving. We hope you enjoy the new sound of the lamentations this year. The music will be very familiar to many of you from years past.

Approximately 90 seniors from the Churches of Saints Constantine and Helen, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, and Saint Spyridon gathered for a joint fun-filled meeting on Tuesday, March 13th. We were joined by Father Simeon Corona of Saint Gregory of Nyssa G.O.C., Father & Presvytera Phillips and Father Michael Sitaras of Saints Constantine and Helen G.O.C., and Father Andrew Scordalakis of St. Spyridon G.O.C. Generous luncheon donations were offered by Georgia’s Greek Cuisine – 3550 Rosecrans St. Point Loma; La Maze Restaurant – 1441 Highland Avenue, National City; Troy’s Greek American Restaurant – 10450 Friars Rd. San Diego, and Spiro’s Gyros Restaurant – Ferry Landing Marketplace, Coronado. A fantastic dessert was prepared by Vasil Karounos of Saints Constantine and Helen. The delicious luncheon was prepared by Zorba’s Restaurant in Chula Vista. We look forward to taking tours together and many more joint meetings.

We are excited that our new choir robes will be here in time for Pascha. There were some delays with the fabric, but it has been worth the wait. As I have mentioned before, we also purchased matching robes for our youth choir. Thank you again for all your generous donations which made this possible! As I announced in last month’s bulletin, Greg Kostas is once again chairing the Faith and Fellowship night at the ballpark. Please buy your tickets to an evening with our Padres and support the choir. The seats are always great, as is the company of so many parishioners! See Greg or any choir member for tickets. Remember, half the proceeds go to our treasury. We are raising funds for future goals that we will announce at a later date once plans are finalized.

We will not be meeting for the next few months so please refer to the church bulletin for information on our next gathering. With Love, Sophia Mellos

The choir and I wish you and your families Kali Anastasi and Kalo Pascha! May God always be in our hearts and give us His blessings. In His service, Katherine Loukatos Meck Choir Master

W.O.W. - WOMEN OF THE WORD We are now entering our last few chapters of St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Every week we have heartfelt discussions about each chapter, and our study binds us ever closer as we try to understand how our Orthodox tradition interprets such difficult concepts as God’s grace and righteousness, justification by faith, and good works. St. Paul teaches us that we are “justified by faith” (Ch.5:1), that we need to be “buried with Christ” in order “to walk in the newness of life” (Ch.6:4), that we must always strive “to bear fruit for God” (Ch.7:4), and “set our minds on the things of the Spirit.” (Ch.8:5). In our opening and closing prayers we always ask to be enlightened in our reading and are challenged to apply what we have learned to our daily lives. We are a small group of women of diverse ages and experiences and look forward to expanding our ministry as we explore the Holy Scriptures. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Soula De La Riva at soula.delariva@cox.net or at 760-521-0471. + With Love in Christ, The Women of the Word Bible Study Group 4

PANARCADIANS Our next meeting will be held Thursday April 26 at 7:00PM in the education building. We have many plans in the making. Among other things we will be discussing chapter and district scholarships, the upcoming District convention in Oakland California, the national Convention in Tripolis, Greece this summer, and our September gala honoring a special Arcadian for their service. Even if you are not a member we urge you join us for fun fellowship and good works. See you on April 26! Fraternally, Adrienne Robas Bell Secretary, Tegea Chapter 101

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

ΝΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ

As we embark on the spiritual journey of Great Lent, the time has also come for Philoptochos to prepare our church for Holy Week and Pascha. Grateful to the many talented hands of Philoptochos and the generosity of our community, last year we delighted in the adorned church and beautiful Epitaphio. We invite you to carry forward your support of the chapter as we prepare to celebrate the beauty and splendor of the most blessed season. Please make your check payable to “St. Spyridon Philoptochos” and return it to the church office. Your contribution is essential for the preparations and is deeply appreciated. Philoptochos will be offering a limited quantity of traditional home baked, fragrant, Pascha Tsourekia, which will be available for your pick up on Palm Sunday, April 8th. To pre-order your tsourekia, please see board member Melanie Dellas on Sundays after church, or use the order form enclosed for your convenience. Block out Saturday, May 5th for the second annual Philoptochos “Spring Celebration” dinner dance! The Cypress Room will be transformed into a festival of Spring with dancing to the live Greek music of Margarita and her band, including Takis Kokotas and Alex Galas. Tony Petroulias with Amvrosia Catering will prepare a sumptuous meal fit for the gods. Proceeds will benefit Philoptochos Ministries and Kids ‘n Cancer Camp Agape. Let us come together as a church family in celebration of good health and bright futures for our own three cancer-afflicted children. Seating is limited, so reserve your tickets today by using the enclosed reservation form. February marked the launch of our 2012 Membership Drive. By becoming a member you help to further our reach of philanthropy, charity, and benevolence, here at home and in our global community. We invite every household to become a member by seeing Membership Chair Marian Dougenis Sunday’s after church, or use the enclosed membership application and mail to the church office with your dues. In the spirit of Philoptochos, our sister chapter Saint Helen’s Philoptochos is planning a traditional Palm Sunday luncheon in honor of and benefiting our three cancer-afflicted children and their families. It does not feel right to close this message without acknowledging the hardship and loss that many of our own have experienced. As president, I witness time and again the outpouring of generosity and love from our church family for those in their time of need, and it is inspiring. On behalf of the chapter, our warmest wishes for you and your families for a fruitful and spiritual Lent and a joyous Pascha! Alexandra Mouzas Anthousa Chapter President 12
