FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANDREW My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
C
hrist is Born! Χριστός Γεννάται! On Sunday, January 1, 2012 the Church, you and I, will celebrate one of the twelve major feast days of the Church: The Circumcision of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is also the feast day of Saint Basil the Great. St. Basil was born into a very pious family of Christian believers around the year 329 AD in Caesarea, Cappadocia. St. Basil’s five brothers and sisters, along with his mother, have also been proclaimed Saints of the Orthodox Church.
B
ecause of his eloquence and learning St. Basil could have been appointed to just about any high government position of his time. He freely chose, however, to use his gifts and talents to serve the Church; and was found to be a tireless worker in the vineyard of the Lord. Around the year 370 AD he was elevated to the rank of Bishop and returned to oversee his hometown of Caesarea (Asia Minor). Prior to his ordination St. Basil spent much time in the monasteries of his day. He is responsible for the creation of what is known as the Long Rules of monastic practice. The Long Rules assist the monasteries with their daily routine and function with regard to spiritual issues.
S
t. Basil was a very prolific writer and one reason he is so well known is because we still have many of his written works intact and available. Included are 368 personal letters written between the years 357 and 378AD. The content of those letters range from the simple to the profound. His letters numbered 188, 199 and 217 were divided to formulate 84 Canons, of which 68 can be found in The Rudder, a collection of Canons (Rules) of the Church.
S
t. Basil has also been credited for writing The Divine Liturgy Continues on p. 2 >>>

the coming year.
Happy New Year everyone! Where did 2011 go? Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating New Year’s 2011. Of course, New Year’s is one of my favorite times (no not because we get to make resolutions that are so hard to keep), but that we get to start the year with the beautiful Liturgy of St. Basil the Great on January 1st. OK, it is my Name Day so I am a little biased. After the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 1st we will be cutting the Vasilopita and I respectfully ask you all to attend this beautiful service. What a wonderful way to start off the new year.
For those of you that were not able to make it to the November 27, 2011 General Assembly your fellow parishioners along with your parish council passed the preliminary budget for 2012 (the final budget will be presented at the Spring General Assembly (March 18, 2012). This budget calls for a 10% increase in stewardship dollars this year. I feel very strongly that we can obtain this goal and ask you to join me in our stewardship efforts. There are so many wonderful things we can do for our Church and San Diego community if we don’t have to spend all our time worrying about our financial stewardship to the parish.
I would like to thank each and every one of you for the opportunity to serve as your Parish Council President for most of 2011. I am humbled and honored to have been able to serve St. Spyridon in this capacity. I also want to thank the Parish Council members whose terms ended at the end of 2011: Art Balourdas, Dino Dougenis, John Kalas, Julie Karagianides, Jim Kesaris and Spero Tzathas. Please join me in personally thanking these six dedicated parishioners for working so hard as council members and pray that God continues to give them good health and allows them to continue to serve the Church in the capacity to which they see fit. I would like to welcome the newly elected parish council members for 2012. They are: Art Balourdas, Ben de La Riva, Dino Dougenis, John Kalas, Jim Leventis, Anne Marie Shaw and Spero Tzathas. These parishioners will join Francesca Captain, Jim Gilpin, Ken Kleinhenz, Vlassi Kouris, Anthony Kyriakidis, Jeff Mamalakis, Bill Navrides and Stephen Thiros as your 2012 board members. Once the election results are ratified by his Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos the 2012 Officers will be elected by the Parish Council members. Please pray for your 2012 Parish Council as they work hard to carry out their ministry to the Church. We need and ask for your support throughout
At the November General Assembly a new standing committee was established. This committee will be called the St. Spyridon Vision & Strategy Committee and will continue the justconcluded work of the Feasibility Study. The goal of this committee will be to: Assess and explore the range of options using the Feasibility Study as a basis and present viable options to the community to received consensus on a final decision. Lastly, it is not too late to join us for the Epiphany Cross Dive Celebration on Sunday, January 8, 2012. Pre-paid reservations are a must and need to reach the Church office by January 3rd. Please join us for this beautiful celebration that has taken place at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church for over 30 years. In closing, I ask you to please check the website, your monthly newsletter and the weekly bulletins for all the activities and services taking place in 2012. There are so many amazing ministries at our Church and I hope and pray you take advantage of these wonderful opportunities. I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church every Sunday morning. In Christ’s Holy Name, Bill Navrides

of Saint Basil. His Divine Liturgy is considered to be older and longer than the one written by Saint John Chrysostom. Unlike St. John’s Divine Liturgy it is celebrated only ten times a year: January 1st. (on his feast day), on the five Sundays of Great and Holy Lent, on the eve of Christmas and Theophany, on Holy and Great Thursday and on Holy and Great Saturday. Basically, it is the Anaphora portion of the Divine Liturgy (the thanksgiving prayers) that add to its length. However, the length of the prayers are contrasted by their depth and beauty.
S
aint Basil the Great is also known for the practical application of the Biblical text. He knew well that from the pages of the Old Testament much of God’s anger stemmed from the lack of care given toward the helpless of that day: the widows and orphans. He also knew well that from the pages of the New Testament Christ’s high moral code demanded action from the believer and thus he is credited for building many charitable institutions. From the words of Fr. George Poulos ...he [St. Basil] directed the creation and development of orphanages, hospitals and homes for the aged. His concept of mutual love and respect and his practical application of brotherly love later led to the formation of the Christian philanthropic societies.
O 2
n the feast day of Saint Basil (January 1st.) the Orthodox Church remembers the body of his philanthropic work through the cutting of the Vasilopita (the bread of St. Basil). These breads humbly remind us that we, too, are to give what we can to those in Continues on p. 3 >>>

true need; and by doing so open ourselves up for God’s blessings. This is expressed by the receiving of the coin during the cutting of the bread. St. Basil expressed in a very real way what we all pray for six times during his Divine Liturgy: to commit our whole life to Christ our God and His Church. At each cutting of the Vasilopita we are reminded and encouraged of Saint Basil’s great spiritual and philanthropic works. Like all the Saints of the Church, we are encouraged to be imitators of them. To fight the good fight, to finish the race and to keep the faith (II Tim. 4:7).
M
y Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I am filled with joy to share with you that once again, we continue to follow the custom of the parish and to cut the Vasilopita offered by our Philoptochos chapter as they continue their honorable work sending all the proceeds of that cutting scheduled for Sunday, January 15, 2012 to Saint Basil Academy in Garrison, NY. However, I am equally excited because this year in 2012 the feast day of Saint Basil falls on a Sunday and we will be cutting and distributing the Vasilopita on that very day to all those who celebrate the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, January 1, 2012. Therefore, please take the time and make the effort to join us for the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil and for the cutting of the Vasilopita that will follow on Sunday, January 1, 2012. NEWS FROM THE LOFT
SENIORS
Dear Friends of the Choir,
YES, SENIORS, THERE IS A SANTA!!!
I hope you and your families enjoyed a blessed Christmas and the New Year brings all of you good health, prosperity, happiness, and spiritual growth.
Santa Claus paid a visit to our Senior Organization at our meeting on December 13th in the community center. Over forty youngat-heart attended the meeting (see the picture below) and shared in a festive afternoon of songs, sat on our 90 year old Santa’s lap as he distributed some precious antique gifts, and shared a delicious meal.
Thank you to my dedicated choir members for taking time off work and their busy schedules to come sing on the feast day of St. Spyridon and the ordination of the newest Deacon from our Metropolis, Andreas. His Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos, as usual, was very happy to see us and give us his blessings. I was personally blessed this Christmas season to work with and introduce the newly formed Saint Katherine Chorale, who made their “debut” at the Philoptochos Christmas Luncheon. I am honored to have been given the position and opportunity to build a religious singing group at St. Katherine College. You will be seeing and hearing more from this dedicated group of students in the future. We would like to thank Bill and Marion Demos for once again hosting our annual choir Christmas party. They are always so gracious to open their home to us and extend their warm hospitality. The food, drink, and desserts were delicious, but the most important part of the evening was being together as a choir family during this most blessed time of the year. We congratulate our Greg Kostas who will be honored with the Spirit of Stewardship Award at Epiphany. Greg has been a devoted and valued choir member for many years. He has been instrumental in organizing and coordinating our annual Padres fundraiser. Greg has been on the Parish Council and had many leadership roles in our community. He has supported our youth and all parish organizations, especially Philoptochos, giving his time and talent of photography to En Vogue and other events. He’s a man of honor, kindness and love for his church and community. We love you Greg. AXIOS!
All the people who attended left with smiles on their faces and are looking forward to our next meeting to be held on Tuesday, January 10th. If you want to smile (and not worry) please plan to join us on the second Tuesday of the month. We will be serving a complimentary Prime Rib Luncheon courtesy of TURF SUPPER CLUB, 1116 25th Street, San Diego. We thank the Turf Supper Club for their generous donation and support of our St. Spyridon Seniors. Reservations are required in order to facilitate planning. Please contact Mrs. Cynthia Samarkos at 619-582-4109 or at tedcynsam@ cox.net by Saturday, January 7th to make your reservations. We will be collecting $10 from each individual at our January meeting for the 2012 Senior Organization Dues. If your restaurant or business is interested in supporting the Senior Citizens by providing a lunch, please contact Mrs. Cynthia Samarkos at 619-582-4109 or tedcynsam@cox.net. We are also interested in inviting anyone who would like to make a short presentation to the Seniors on a topic of interest to Seniors to please contact Cynthia. See how we have grown!!! In October we had 17 attend our meeting, 23 attended in November, and over 40 attended our meeting in December. Help us set a new record in January. We wish you all a Healthy and Happy 2012!!!
May the New Year keep us healthy both in body and soul to continue singing our Lord’s praises each Sunday! In His service, Katherine Loukatos Meck Choir Master

2012 Cross Dive & Theophany Luncheon The 2012 Theophany Cross Dive and Luncheon Celebration, will take place at the Sheraton Harbor Island on Sunday, January 8, 2012. We will be honoring Mr. Greg Kostas and Mrs. Ritsa Horeftis with the Leon Balaban Award and also acknowledge our past Cross divers in attendance that day. Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church has carried on this beautiful tradition of casting a Cross into the waters since 1980 and looks forward to another fruitful year. We are trying to complete the list before our next Theophany Cross Dive and Luncheon. Therefore, if you know of any past Cross Dive retrievers and/or the date on which they received the Cross please contact Fr. Andrew, Bill Navrides or the church office with that information. We are missing the names for the following years: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999.
Does Your Place of Business Match Your Stewardship Contribution? Should your company or organization allow for “matching grants” or “matching donations” to a nonprofit organization, such as Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, under their specific guidelines, we are asking you to please make a request on behalf of the Church if indeed it is an available and allowable option. Having your company match your stewardship pledge could be a viable option for the church to raise its revenue. Please take the time and make the effort to research if indeed your company matches contributions to Saint Spyridon GOC. The Stewardship Committee thanks you in advance.

ΝΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ
PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS December has been an exceptionally engaged month for the chapter and our membership. Co-celebrating Christmas with our sister chapter of Sts. Constantine and Helen, a luncheon was held at the Hilton Torrey Pines to landmark the historic occasion. Luncheon chairs Marina Dimas, Angie Georggin, and Christine Tradas executed the day flawlessly with merriment provided by Saint Katherine Chorale under the direction of Kathy Meck, there was good cheer, hearty fellowship, and delicious food. Hundreds of pajamas and books were collected for the children in need of San Diego. Congratulations to our chair Ladies on a job well done! Particularly festive was the visit of our Metropolitan Gerasimos. In his honor, Mary Gikas and Julie Karagianides chaired a Lenten Reception in honor of His Eminence on the eve of Feast Day. We were blessed to host an ordination and Hierarchal Liturgy celebrating the Feast Day of St. Spyridon the Wonder Worker. A Lenten luncheon hosted by the chapter and chaired by Julie Karagianides for over 115 people. Our heartfelt appreciation to the dedication of these ladies that make each and every occasion special for the community.
Gina Balourdas once again chaired the chapter’s annual tradition of bringing Christmas home to our home bound parishioners. Thank you Gina, and to your team of volunteers that assembled these beautiful touches of Christmas, which are very much appreciated and anticipated by their recipients. And as of this printing, we are currently involved in the beloved annual tradition of the Trinity Kids Christmas Party. Stand by for a full report with photos next month! We look forward to the following activities planned for the month of January, won’t you please join us at the Vasilopita cutting on January 1st and January 15th. Shortly each household will receive a letter asking for your support of the chapter, we ask that you please give generously. Every hour that you donate to the chapter’s good works, and every financial gift helps to further the embrace of the chapter. Sending you and yours warmest wishes for a blessed New Year!
