n the third Sunday following Pascha (in 2012, Sunday, May 6th) we (will) hear about Jesus descending from the mountain, after giving His Sermon on the Mount and commencing His healing ministry. He cleanses the lepers, heals the fever of Peter’s mother, and casts out the demons in the region of the Gadarenes. From the fifth chapter of John (5:15), read on the third Sunday following Pascha, we hear about Jesus wanting to heal mankind on a deeper level; beyond the physical. He desires to heal the soul of man, the soul, which is the very essence of man, that, which gives the body its very life. However, once again, we are confronted by those who deny Christ’s healing power and authority and even call Him a blasphemer; and so, Jesus in His usual style possess a question and asks the scribes …which is easier, to say your sins are forgiven or to say rise and walk?
J
esus knew at a very deep level what the paralytic needed; he needed his soul healed and that is why He first said your sins are forgiven. He knew a person’s distress, misfortune or tribulation in life was thought to be from the sins he or his family had committed; sins of the soul were seen to effect the body, in this case, the cause of the paralytic’s distress. Instead of just healing the paralytic’s physical body, Jesus tries to heal that man’s soul and bring comfort to him and his family, like the true pastor He is.
I
n essence, to heal the soul was and is the harder more difficult thing to do. But at first reading, and to the blind eyes of the Scribes, healing the paralytic’s body seems to be more difficult. And so, Jesus, to show the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins does that which seems more difficult and heals the paralytic in front of His doubters, and that which they tried so hard to do, had the opposite effect. The Gospel of Matthew tells us …the crowds saw what had taken place and were amazed and they glorified God.
S
o, what does all this mean for those of us who live in such a modern and technical society? What this means is we too must come to recognize and accept that Jesus still has the power and authority to heal both our bodies and more importantly, our souls.
O
ur Lord and Savior can still heal us from not only our bodily aliments but from those things, which corrupt the soul as well. Jesus can release and heal us from disease and illness, which may plague our physical being. Continues on p. 2 >>>

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ Is Risen! What a glorious and moving Paschal season we just completed. I would like to thank all of you that worked so hard to make this a Spiritually fulfilling Great and Holy Lent. For those that worked in the Narthex during the extra Church services, to the dedicated group of ladies that decorated the most beautiful Kouvouklion I have ever seen, to those that worked 2 hours or more at the annual Pascha Picnic, and many, many more a BIG thank you from me and the entire Parish Council. As I have previously said it takes ALL of our Time, Talent and Treasures to serve in Christ’s Holy Church and you continue to show me that time and time again. Did you attend the Pascha Picnic on April 15th with our fellow Greek Orthodox Christians from Sts. Constantine and Helen? How magnificent it was to see our two parishes worshipping as one during the Agape Service and breaking bread together afterward. Both parish councils will be working very hard to make sure the Joint Pascha Picnic is an annual occurrence. If you have any thoughts or ideas on how to improve the Picnic or you would like to be involved in the planning for next year (May 5, 2013) please don’t hesitate to contact me. A huge thank you goes out to the Pascha Picnic committee consisting of Jim Gilpin, Jim Leventis and Spero Tzathas. These hard working parish council members along with Greg Kostas, Erika Leventis, Corey Leventis and Kayla Leventis helped skewer 1,000 souvlakia and at the crack of dawn on Pascha morning made rice for 900 people. We are all most grateful for your hard work. I am sad to admit that it is common practice in many Churches to see a decrease in faithful Church attendance after Pascha. Let’s not be one of these statistics. When I think it’s OK to take
a week or two off after all the Holy Week and Lenten Services I remember this quote from John Chapter 6 verses 53-55; Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.” My brothers and sisters in Christ these verses very clearly state we must be in Church each and every Sunday to worship as a community and receive Holy Communion, nothing else on Sunday really matters. Please don’t forget our 43rd Annual Greek Festival will take place June 8th, 9th and 10th. As our communities’ largest fundraiser and outreach your help is needed and appreciated before, during and after the Festival. Please join the Festival committee at the May 15th and May 29th meetings at 6:30 pm in the Educational Building. Lastly, I am asking you to mark Saturday, September 22, 2012 on your calendars and block out the day. Our parish will have Bill Marianes with us for the weekend. Bill serves on the Archdiocesan Council and is a vital part of the Archdiocese’s National Stewardship Ministries and its Legal Committee. He also serves the Metropolis of Atlanta in many and varied ways: he is the General Counsel of that Metropolis, he is on the Metropolis Council and has been appointed to many of its committees. I heard Bill Marianes speak last May at St. Nicholas Ranch and believe me he will inspire and motivate you to deepen your faith in Jesus Christ and be more involved in His Church. I look forward to worshipping with you and your families in Church on Sunday mornings. In Christ’s Holy Name, Bill Navrides
FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ANDREW >>> Continued from p. 1
I D
f permitted, as in Gadarene, Jesus can help us to slay the demons that try to possess us like: jealousy, lust, pride, greed, and the rest, which try to make us less than human. So, like the paralytic and his friends, let us also place Jesus at the forefront of our lives. Let us seek His guidance and allow Him to be the physician of both our souls and bodies.
oes this mean that we do not need today’s physicians and the modern technology they bring with them? Absolutely not! If we thought that we may be considered foolish stewards of our humanity. To allow Christ into our lives as physician of our souls and bodies is to seek His guidance about the proper care of our being; one reason the Church prescribes a cycle of fasting and selfdiscipline among other spiritual and physical exercises.
H
owever, when those exercises fail us (because of inactivity or misuse) we are to seek the physicians of this world; those who have studied and prayed for their curing techniques, hopefully like the holy and healing unmercenaries Kosma and Damian, Panteleimon and the rest. As one seeks the wise advice of an experienced earthly physician, and places his faith in their talent, similarly through prayer and a developed relationship with Jesus Christ a person comes to place his faith in Christ and accepts what is offered.
T
he paralytic and his friends recognized the healing power of Jesus and came hoping for bodily healing, but the immediate response from Jesus was to forgive that man’s sins, thus wanting to heal that which is much more precious, his soul. So, as we continue our journey through this world in the hope for the next let us also approach the physician and listen attentively for His guidance, placing our faith in His power and authority for the healing of both our souls and bodies. 2

NEWS FROM THE LOFT
W.O.W. - WOMEN OF THE WORD
Dear Friends of the Choir,
Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!
Χριστός Ανέστη! I hope you and your families celebrated a beautiful Holy Week and lovely day at the Pascha picnic or wherever you celebrated Christ’s Resurrection.
The Women of the Word Bible Study Group would like to invite all the ladies of our parish for a complimentary viewing of the film, “Paul’s Journeys According to Scripture - The full story of the Apostle Paul from his birth in Tarsus to his death in Rome. Filmed on location in Turkey, Greece and Italy.” The viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 10:30am in the Education Building. Light refreshments will be served at 10:00am. If you are interested in joining us, kindly RSVP to Soula De La Riva at soula.delariva@cox.net or at 760-521-0471. We hope to see you there!
I hope you enjoyed the revision of our Lamentations. It brought back many memories of years past. As most of you saw, we “baptized” our new choir robes on Good Friday in the sudden downpour during the procession with the Epitaphio. We now know our robes are washable! We are excited about our new robes and the new color we chose. Thanks again for supporting our fundraising for this purpose. Speaking of fundraising, as I’ve mentioned before, we are once again having Faith and Fellowship night at the ballpark on July 20, 2012. Please see Greg Kostas or any choir member to purchase tickets. Half the proceeds from the ticket sales come back to us. I hope you and your families will join us at the ballpark. I remind any of you who may be interested in joining our lively group to come to rehearsals and Sunday worship. We are always looking for new members and in courage our young adults to join us and carry on the tradition of singing the Lord’s praises throughout the year.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Χριστός Ανέστη! Christ is Risen!
Χριστός Ανέστη, Christ is Risen!
Thank you to everyone who made our Great and Holy Friday Retreat a success: our teachers, students, parents, grandparents, and a special thank you to Father Andrew for carrying us through our Spiritual Journey. The High School Class, with parental permission, began at 9 a.m. and viewed Mel Gibson’s, “The Passion of the Christ.” They later had discussion lead by their teacher. All students participated, “In the Garden.” The agony, prayer, betrayal, and renewal were all topics of this year’s retreat. Students were presented prayer rope bracelets and learned how to use them in praying “The Jesus Prayer or Prayer of the Heart.” Each student planted their own dish gardens and participated in a recycle scavenger hunt as they learned that Pascha is a time for recycling ourselves each year while partaking of the sacraments of our Church. Soup and sack lunches were provided.
Hope you all had a wonderful Pascha and are enjoying Spring in the air, as we start to wrap up another school season. I know as we go into May, many are starting to plan summer vacations and it is such an exciting time. It is also an exciting time for our seniors as they are preparing to go off to college. We wish them all God’s Blessings in their new adventure in life, we will surely miss you!
Thank you to Greg Kostas for taking our Sunday School Class photos once again this year. He is a true friend of Sunday School. Celebrate Out-Reach Sunday by bringing a friend to church May 6, for Jesus tells us, …Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:15. May 27 concludes our Sunday School year with Teacher Appreciation, Promotion, and an Ice Cream Social. Thank you for entrusting your children to us each week! In His service, Diana Fowler
As this article goes to print we are preparing for our Southern California Goya Volleyball Tournament in Pasadena on May 19th. We will continue practicing until the day of the event, and we are planning on a scrimmage game with our friends from St. Constantine and Helen. Our coaches are Mr. Anthony Kyriakidis and Mrs. Paulette Gallanis. If you would like to play and have not received the email flier, please contact Presvytera Diane at Scordafam84@gmail.com. or see one of our coaches. The final date for the roster is May 14th, so don’t hesitate. Our annual Greek Festival is coming up, so our dance groups are starting to practice again, which is always a lot of fun. We look forward to seeing them dance at the festival! After the Greek festival we are planning our annual beach party complete with a huge bon fire! Thanks “Mr. K.” and Mr. Vlassi. You always come through for us with the best bon fire. The exact date is yet to be determined, but will be near the end of June and we will send an email flier, soon. If you are not on our email list, please contact Paulette Gallanis at Paulette@ cox.net and/or join our Listserv by going to our website www. stspyridon.org and clicking on the “Subscribe to our Mail List” tab in the upper left hand corner. Looking forward to seeing you at our next event, God’s Blessings.
GREEK SCHOOL Congratulations to all the students of the Greek language school, who charmed everyone with their singing, reciting and dancing. PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS Χριστός Ανέστη! Many members of the community have shared their delight in the Paschal traditions carried forth by Niki Dougenis, Ritsa Horeftis, Melanie Dellas, Christina Marantos, Jannie Gallanis, and Julie Karagianides. We are grateful to their talented hands for the delicious home baked tsourekia and koulourakia, for beautifully adorning the church and Epitaphios during Holy Week, to the volunteers, and to the many donors that helped to sponsor Philoptochos in their quest as the community resource of philanthropy. Palm Sunday was celebrated with Saints Constantine & Helen and Metropolis President Jeannie Ranglas. Our sister chapter of Saint Helen Philoptochos prepared a delicious meal for 280 guests, presented beautiful baskets for sale, and honored our three cancer afflicted children and their families. Father Michael gave each child a special blessing for their healing. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to the community of Saints Constantine & Helen and chapter president Irene Mylonas for everything they have done for our children. Pennies and Prayers is the Philoptochos ministry that supports the work of the Commission of Orthodox Missions (COME) in the Diocese, which serves to educate and engage the faithful of the Metropolis in evangelism and the establishment and growth of mission parishes. Look for the Pennies and Prayers canisters in the Cypress Room on the tables during the Sunday coffee hours. On Saturday, May 5th Philoptochos shall host their second annual “Spring Celebration” dinner dance! The Cypress Room will transform into a festival of Spring with Greek dancing to the live performance of Margarita and her band. Amvrosia Catering will prepare a sumptuous meal fit for the gods. Proceeds will benefit

OCMC
EVENTS 2012
Orthodox Christian Mission Center
I wanted to thank everyone for supporting the OCMC events in 2012. Whether you attended one, two, or all three, I hope you learned one more thing this year about missions and the Orthodox Christian Mission Center. I couldn’t be happier with the results of all three events. First, I wanted to thank Fr. Andrew and Presvytera Diane for their guidance and support on all three events. I would like to thank Anastasia Pamela Barksdale for coming to San Diego to make a fabulous presentation at St. Katherine College in Encinitas. Those who attended learned so much about the growth of Orthodoxy in Albania. Thank you to those of you who helped me with the food and drinks: Judy Panagos, Dionisis Kakavoulis, and Diana Fowler; and to St. Katherine College for the venue. The Hunger Strike was modeled after the one started by St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine. It rained and all the teenagers were there on time! We had 17 teenagers (GOYA) and 13 younger children who joined us at 3 PM. The older children fasted for about 20 hours and realized how blessed they are that they don’t have to do without food on a daily basis. Presvytera Diane and Doreen Platis were my “right hands” and helped me the entire day. Thank you to all of you
who helped me with this event: Fr. Andrew for his presentation on the preparation of the Holy Gifts; Alina Kleinhenz, my photographer; Jannie Gallanis for preparing and donating the Koliva and the Artoklasia for the service and for all the ones named Alexios or Alexia who celebrated their name days, like her granddaughter; Christine Frangos who assisted Jannie with the presentation of how Koliva is made and the significance; Maria Platis and Sia Sooklaris for manning the Community Service Table and collecting the donations for God’s Extended Hand and Rachel’s House; the parents of all the children who attended and brought items for the homeless shelters; Janet Scofidio, whose clients from her Hair Salon in Hillcrest donated a large quantity of full size hair products for Rachel’s House and so many other items… thank you for your generosity; Mary Spencer, D.D.S. for donating 80 tooth brushes to go into the bags for the homeless; Georgia of Georgia’s Greek Cuisine who donated all the rolls that went into the bags for the homeless and for our Agape Meal; my group leaders: Soula De La Riva, Maria Kapetanios, and Donnie Carmichael; to the ones who helped me with the younger children and the crafts: Christina Vassos, and Sophia Thiros; and finally to my cooks who prepared a fabulous Lenten meal for us at the end of the day: Dionisis and
Francine Kakavoulis. The Wednesday following the Hunger Strike, we took all the items donated by all of you downtown to God’s Extended Hand and Rachel’s House. We had some of the teenagers who attended the retreat: Stefan Klienhenz, Drey, Micha and Kyra Balourdas, hand out the bags they made for the 100 guests at God’s Extended Hand, that contained assorted toiletries, a roll, and a prayer card, because one of the messages of the Hunger Strike is that those who don’t have enough money sometimes have to decide between buying something to eat or buying toiletries. Thank you to Arlene Dabbas for helping me deliver all the items downtown to the shelters. There were about 65 people who registered for the OCMC Walk this year and we raised a little over $3000 that will go towards the first Orthodox teaching team traveling to Mongolia this summer. The walk would not be complete without the wonderful T-shirts made by Dino Dougenis of Blue Sea Apparel. Once again Dino donated all the T-shirts for the event! Thank you to the five T-shirt advertisers: St. Katherine College, Spiro’s Gyros, Musica Russica, Demetra Laliotitis for her granddaughter, Allison, and Patristic Nectar Publications; and to Spero Tzathas and his family for donating the printed water bottles.
I appreciated Janet Burgess for coming up with the path for the walk. Thank you to my helpers the day of the walk: Mary Wilhelm, my photographer and who helped me with set up and registration; Tina Kallas for setting up the food; Paulette Gallanis for setup and traffic control with her husband Themis; Marianne Seare who helped me at the table with donations; Lynne Alexiou who helped me with setting up the tables; Andreas Capetanakis for cleaning up the hall for me while we were walking; Zoe Seare and Hannah Kallas for selling buttons, water bottles and T-shirts; the church secretaries, Vicky and Tina for all of their help; and of course all of the walkers and those who donated to OCMC! I also appreciated Fr. Simeon Corona and his son, Carl, who joined us on the walk, as well as Lia Blomgren from St. Anthony’s. If I have forgotten anyone, please forgive me, you were also appreciated. To see all the photographs from the Hunger Strike and the OCMC Walk, check the photo section of our church website in a few weeks. As you can see, it took the help of a lot of people to make these events a success! Maria Kelmis OCMC Ambassador for St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church
USED Greek Music CDs Wanted! Tired of listening to those old Greek music CDs? Do you have duplicates that you don’t need? Now you can donate your used Greek music CDs to our Festival! If they are in good condition and in their original packaging (no bootleg copies please!), they will be sold at the Greek Music CDs booth. All proceeds will benefit our Festival. Please bring them to the Church Office by May 19, to allow sufficient time for their processing. Thank you!
