My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

FROM THE DESK OF
rom last month’s Newsletter article I shared with you the importance of your presence at the Divine Liturgy throughout the summer months. Subsequently, I take this opportunity once again to remind you that the operating expenses of our beloved Saint Spyridon parish do not cease throughout the summer months as well. Just like your own personal operating expenses, i.e. mortgage payments, rent, car payments, credit card payments, etc., which do not take a break throughout the summer months, nor does the operating expenses of your parish. The same payments and bills have got to be met and paid throughout the summer months as they do throughout the entire year. Because of your generosity and positive response our 2012 stewardship efforts continue to grow and bear fruit.

owever, for many and varied reasons meeting our operational expenses throughout the summer months have always been a challenge, but we have been getting better. So, with a little conscientious hard work the challenge to meet our operational expenses throughout the summer can be met and over come. Hence, it is now up to each and every honorable steward of the parish to meet and over come the challenge. You can do your part by continuing to fulfill your 2012 pledged stewardship amount throughout the summer months. Therefore, as you made your 2012 stewardship pledge at the beginning of the year, I along with the Stewardship Committee of the parish, are encouraging you to continue to fulfill that pledged amount on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis throughout the summer months. We THANK YOU in advance. Let’s keep up the good and most honorable work.

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL Christ is in our Midst! What a fabulous and very successful Festival we had last month. I must start by thanking our four co-chairs; Art Balourdas, Francesca Captain, Anthony Kyriakidis and Spero Tzathas who together took the lead this year and their hard working team consisting of Anne Marie Almaraz, Dino Dougenis, Vlassi Kouris, Stephen Thiros and Michael Yeatts. This year’s financial numbers were presented at the Festival Volunteer Appreciation Dinner which took place on Tuesday, June 26th. I “friended” the St. Spyridon Festival Facebook page and was so happy to see all the wonderful comments from the community before, during and after the Festival. Everyone seems excited for next year! I would like to encourage everyone to consider taking a leadership role for the 2013 Festival. I would REALLY like to see a Non Parish Council member step up in 2013 and take their turn as a chair or co-chair. The Festival brings our community together and allows us to share our beautiful Saint Spyridon family with the greater community. It is an honor and privilege to lead this charge. The success of the Festival shows what we can accomplish as one Body of Christ. Let us continue to work as one, because if we do this there is nothing we can’t accomplish. Did you read last month’s newsletter and see the write up about the Community Vision and Strategy Committee? I have been on many committees in my volunteer lifetime and I must tell you after the first meeting on May 10th I could tell that this is a dedicated, energetic and committed group of parishioners that will work very hard to dissect The Five Options from the
Feasibility Study and at some time in the future come to share the findings with the community and have a long discussion about those options. Please know this will not happen overnight, but do know the committee is meeting the second Wednesday of each month during the summer (June 13th, July 11th and August 15th). Stay tuned for more exciting news from this committee. It is my honor and privilege to report that Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church received a $100,000 bequest in late May from the Theodorelos Family Trust. This bequest came after the passing last year of Elizabeth Rigopoulos Theodorelos (whose father Thomas Rigopoulos was the first Parish Council President from 1927-1929). On behalf of Themis Gallanis, the chair of the Legacy and Gift Planning Committee and the Parish Council our sincere thanks goes out to the late Zack and Elizabeth Theodorelos (May their Memories be Eternal). The Parish Council will be meeting to decide how best to use the funds for the betterment of our community. If you were in Church on Sunday, May 27th you witnessed the beautiful Sunday School promotion for our children. My sincere thanks to our Sunday School Director, Diana Fowler, who has worked tirelessly the past 2 years as our Director. Thank you as well to all the Sunday School teachers as it takes many hands to make Sunday School a success. Diana is taking a much needed break and stepping down as Sunday School Director. After Divine Liturgy attendance and worship / Holy Communion there is NOTHING more important for our children then Continues on p. 3 >>>

W.O.W. - WOMEN OF THE WORD Our captivating study of St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans has come to a close. We were certainly challenged and yet, truly inspired by St. Paul to not just be hearers of the Word, but doers of the Word - to live out our faith in ACTION! St. Paul the Apostle is as inspiring to us today as he was during the time of the Romans; we are so blessed to be able to study his letters. To wrap up our yearly study, Women of the Word hosted a special showing of the film, “Paul Journey’s According to Scripture.” The film took us through all the cities of St. Paul’s missionary journeys, recounting all the victories and struggles he encountered while he was spreading the Gospel of Christ. We enjoyed lovely refreshments graciously provided by Kitsa Koutsoukos, in memory of her beloved late husband John, and the film was kindly provided by Collette Pepelis. Thank you Collette and Kitsa for your generosity. It was a true blessing to have several ladies from our parish join us for the film; we hope to see you all again! Women of the Word is not an exclusive group and we welcome all the ladies of St. Spyridon to join us! We will be taking a break for the summer, however when we are in session, we meet every Wednesday at 10:30am. This coming fall we will be commencing our study of the Gospel according to St. Mark. Our first introductory meeting is scheduled for September 12, 2012 at 10:30am in the Education Building. For more information, please contact Soula De La Riva at 760-521-0471 or at soula.delariva@cox.net. We hope to see you in the fall!

SUNDAY SCHOOL
G.O.Y.A. NEWS
We must instruct our children from the day they are born in Orthodox Christian life BY OUR EXAMPLE for we, as parents, are the most important Sunday School Teachers our children will ever have. We look forward to seeing you with your children in the Divine Liturgy, for God’s Word doesn’t take a vacation.
Hope you are all having a great summer. News update for our volleyball tournament in Pasadena. Both our junior team and our senior team did really well. Our junior team won the most games in their division, and our senior team tied for second place! Good job everyone, but more importantly we had a great time again! We look forward to next year. Thank you so much to our coaches, Mr. Kyriakidis and Mr. Kouris, for encouraging us and inspiring us to do our best, and for driving us, of course.
Remember our Summer Take-Home Project for Pennies and Prayers! Students have been given collection boxes in which to insert their spare change. All monies collected – on the first day of Sunday School in September – will be turned into Philoptochos for their Pennies and Prayers ministry benefitting Greek Orthodox Mission Churches. For any questions you may have regarding this program, please contact Marina Dimas. The living shall praise You as I do. From this day forward, I shall cause children to declare Your righteousness . . . Isaiah 38:19.

ANTHONY GALLANIS SOPHIA MAZIS NYSSA STOKES ANDRIANNA YEATTS We are proud to report that since 1984, the fund has awarded sixty-eight (68) scholarships amounting to over thirty-eight thousand ($38,000) to the youth of our community in our effort to provide educational assistance through the scholarship fund. We recognize that our ability to assist is increased with the aid of our community. In years past, we have received donations to the fund, which have greatly assisted our youth. If anyone would like to make a donation as well, it is tax deductible. We appreciate all your continued support for the youth of our Saint Spyridon community.

PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS
ΝΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ
June was an industrious month for the chapter and the community. Congratulations to our Parish Council for hosting the herculean project of the 43rd annual Greek Festival. Father’s Day was celebrated with The board of directors hosting this annual fellowship. The five wounded warriors from the Republic of Georgia were honored at a fellowship reception hosted by Philoptochos, and co-chaired by Julie Karagianides, Mary Manusos, and Katherine Stewart. The final general meeting of the year was co-chaired by Melanie Dellas and Julie Karagianides. It was attended and enjoyed by many in the community. Professor Rybokova’s presentation on Virgil’s Orpheus was compelling. Our deepest appreciation goes to our chair persons, the cast of volunteers that supported them, and to our donors. The Anthousa Chapter of Philoptochos will celebrate their 75th diamond jubilee anniversary of promoting charity, benevolence, and philanthropy in San Diego. Plans are underway for the celebration to take place on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Stand by for exciting details. We will need your support in collecting historic photos that chronicle our 75 years of philanthropy. Likewise the Steering Committee will need a few good hands to organize this joyous event. If you are interested in serving, we encourage you to become involved and see anyone of our board members. National Philoptochos Biennial Convention 2012 “Chosen and Appointed by God to Go and Bear Fruit” Offering Healing, Peace and Hope National Philoptochos President Aphrodite Skeadas reminds all Philoptochos Chapters “to ensure that the Philoptochos mission continues forever, the participation at the Convention of all Chapters is required and necessary.” Philoptochos is at an historic juncture as we celebrate 80 Years of Philanthropy! Each member and Chapter is an integral part of this major, international, philanthropic organization. The Anthousa chapter will send two delegates to Phoenix June 30 to July 5 to make a difference as we honor our past, reflect on the present and create a future strategy to continue the Philoptochos legacy. The chapter has many diverse committees and ministries, we welcome you to become involved. The chapter flourishes with the support of our membership and community.
