y the time you receive your March Newsletter we will be celebrating/ remembering the second Sunday of Great and Holy Lent; and on that second Sunday, the Church remembers St. Gregory Palamas. St. Gregory was a monk of Mount Athos. He became bishop of Salonica in Greece in 1350. He was an ascetic, someone who participates in a strict life of prayer through self-denial and self-discipline. St. Gregory is remembered on the second Sunday of the Great and Holy Lent because he became the leader of a prayer movement known as hesychasm. Hesychasm is considered by many to be the highest form of prayer and requires much from the participant.

or Hesychasts, the goal is to attain vision of the uncreated light. Fr. George Papademetriou, professor at Holy Cross School of Theology, writes the following about St. Gregory’s viewpoint: The true life and purpose of the human person is participation or communion with the divine light. Gregory Palamas says “We know that the commandments of God grant knowledge and not only knowledge but also theosis. Simply put, theosis is the attempt to become like God.

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PARISH COUNCIL As we are finishing our first week of Great and Holy Lent I pray you and your family have a spiritually fulfilling journey towards Pascha on April 15th. More to come on some exciting developments regarding Pascha later in this article.
internationally, d) have 100% of our operating budget covered by stewardship (we are getting much closer to this every year) and e) come to a consensus as a community on what our “next steps” will be for the future of St. Spyridon.
On January 15th the 2012 Parish Council was sworn in by Fr. Andrew on the solea of the church. We then had elections for the 2012 Parish Council officers. I was elected Parish Council President for 2012 with Vlassi Kouris 1st Vice President, Anthony Kyriakidis 2nd Vice President, Francesca Captain Secretary and Stephen Thiros treasurer. Please pray for the Executive board and all 15 members of the 2012 Parish Council as we continue to administer the affairs of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church with this worthy ministry.
I do want to thank our newly formed Welcome Committee and each and every one of you as I have spoken with many “visitors” and first time attendees to St. Spyridon and they all say the same thing, “this is the most welcoming Orthodox Church they have ever been too.” My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ we are all a Church family and this is showing throughout San Diego and beyond. Again my sincere thanks to each and every one of you. Please keep up the good work as there is only one chance to make a first impression.
As I assess the goals I would like to see our parish achieve in 2012 I first looked at my parish council goals I presented to you last year in my first President’s message in April 2011. My main goal was to get more parishioners involved in the life of our Church. I am happy to say that happened on many occasions in 2011. We have new Parish Council members (full regime of 15 which we have not had in years), Sunday School teachers, Dance instructors, Narthex Duty team volunteers and many, many more. My sincere thanks to all who volunteered their time, talents and treasures when asked and a big thanks to those that stepped up and saw an unmet need and filled it.
I have some wonderful news to share with all of you in regards to the 2012 Pascha Picnic. The parish councils of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church and Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church have unanimously agreed to hold a joint Pascha Picnic on Sunday, April 15th at San Dieguito Park. I am asking you all to please attend this joint picnic and help us worship together as one Greek Orthodox community. Please see enclosed flyer inside this newsletter.
My goals for 2012 are: a) continue to see an increased attendance of faithful parishioners worshipping together each and every Sunday, b) see more non parish council members take an active role in one of our 22 standing committees, c) work closely with Philoptochos to continue to serve the needs of the poor, widowed and orphaned; locally, nationally and
As I did last year in my first message, I would like to ask for your forgiveness in advance for any decisions that I might make this year that offend you. I will do my best to always think what is best for our Church before any decisions are made. I wish all of you a Blessed Lent and I look forward to saying “Christ has Risen/Christos Anesti” to each and every one of you on April 15th. In Christ’s Holy Name, Bill Navrides

T
he divine commandments are the perfect medicine of the soul and the only means to attain the vision of the divine light. The assimilation with God’s energies is perfected only in the loving practice of the divine commandments. The light that shines in the heart of the human person sees clearly and knows sensible things. St. Gregory writes those who partake of this illumination and have a portion of it, have also proportionately the knowledge of all created beings.
F
or St. Gregory Palamas, the vision of the divine reality is the ultimate gift from the Holy Spirit. It is in this life, which makes it possible for the saint to acquire the presence of God and participate in the divine glory. This is beyond all human virtue or knowledge and reason. For St. Gregory, knowledge is the illumination of the heart and intellect making it possible for the human person to attain union with the divine uncreated light. All other knowledge is secondary, though not useless.
M
y brothers and sisters in Christ, whether we are striving for the uncreated light that St. Gregory experienced or simple communion with God through our personal prayer lives, the lesson from the second Sunday of Lent is we make God real in our lives through a committed life of prayer. Prayer is the connection and bond between God and man. It is our way to open and cultivate an ongoing dialogue with Him. The more we pray, the greater the dialogue; the greater the dialogue the greater the growth in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Therefore, it would be spiritually fruitful if one immediate goal of our Lenten Journey would be the fostering and/or deepening of our prayer life, both personal (at home, etc.) and communal (the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings). Καλή Τεσσαρακοστή - May you have a fruitful Lent.

NEWS FROM THE LOFT
SENIORS
Dear Friends of the Choir,
Dear Seniors,
Lent is upon us once again, a reminder of how quickly time passes. The choir and youth choir are rehearsing the beautiful hymns that grace us during the weeks leading up to Holy Pascha.
February’s gathering was another successful meeting where over sixty of our Seniors got together to enjoy each other’s company and wonderful food. Thank you to the gracious Ladies of Philoptochos for sponsoring such a beautiful Valentine’s Day luncheon. We definitely felt surrounded by LOVE.
Congratulations to our Aegean dancers for placing First (gold) in their division at the Folk Dance Festival! I am also SO proud to announce that our St. Spyridon Youth Choir placed First (gold) in the Choral Competition division as well! Those of you who were in church a few weeks ago and listened to our youth choir sing the Divine Liturgy and their competition hymns know how wonderfully they sounded. The same goes for the Aegeans who performed their dance set during fellowship. These are amazing children and young adults who are the future of our choir and parish. Please offer them your congratulations when you seem them. It was an honor for me to direct our youth choir during the Divine Liturgy at FDF in Anaheim. They did a fantastic job. We were privileged to have His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, and many visiting clergy with us. It was a very memorable experience for me and the congregation.
March’s meeting should be just as exciting, as we are hosting a luncheon for the Seniors of Sts. Contantine and Helen and St. Gregory of Nyssa. It will be a fun way to get to know each other and gather great ideas. Please plan on joining us on March 13th at 11pm. Date and time are subject to change so please await a monthly reminder flyer for confirmation and additional information. If you are not yet a member but wish to join, please call me at (619)855-2991. We would love to see you! With Love, Sophia Mellos
Special thanks go to Elaine Arapostathis for treating our choir members to dinner before our meeting. We feasted on soups, salads, and desserts from the Soup Plantation. We thank you Elaine for your thoughtfulness and generosity. We love you Elaine! We welcome Ingamar (Peter) Pedron to our choir family. Ingamar has been a member of our parish for the last two years. We are excited to have his voice in our baritone section. Remember, we are always looking for new members in order to keep building and strengthening our choir. We are a fun loving group who love to sing the Lord’s praises. Our “official” choir fundraiser, Greg Kostas, is once again organizing our Faith and Fellowship Night at the ballpark. The game will be on July 20th this year. Tickets will go on sale this month, so please see Greg or any choir member to order your tickets. The choir makes half the proceeds of each ticket. We thank you in advance for your support and hope you will take advantage of the good seats and enjoy an evening at the ballpark with your friends and family. Καλή Σαρακοστή! In His service, Katherine Loukatos Meck Choir Master
W.O.W. - WOMEN OF THE WORD This year’s Bible Study on the book of Romans has been more than spiritually challenging for all of us. We have been moved, inspired, and called by St. Paul to not just hear the words of our faith, but to live them! Women from our parish gather together each week to read the Holy Scriptures over the shoulders of our Holy Fathers. We are so blessed to have this ministry in our parish and we are always seeking out new members. If you are a woman looking for friendship, inspiration, and spiritual enrichment, we invite you to come join us! We meet every Wednesday at 10:30am in the Education Building and our discussions are always dynamic and fulfilling. Please contact me at soula.delariva@cox.net or at 760-521-0471 if you are interested in joining. On behalf of all the Women of the Word, I pray that the upcoming season of Great & Holy Lent motivates you to live out your faith each day. We hope to see you at our next study! With Love in Christ, Soula De La Riva

Our chapter has applications for the El Camino Real District #20 AHEPA Scholarship Foundation for worthy students. We also have applications for the AHEPA academy that invites High School Juniors to apply for the opportunity to be one of a small select group of Greek-American High School students. It is a program that identifies, educates, inspires, mentors, advances and networks exceptional Greek-American High School students as they progress through their High School, college, graduate and professional careers. Another scholarship that is offered is from the AHEPA Educational Foundation to High School Seniors, College Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, Graduate Students, Medical School Students, Hellenic College and AHEPA Journey to Greece. Our San Diego Chapter 223, will be donating one thousand dollars towards the AHEPAcademy scholarship. Another contribution was made during our last meeting for the sum of five hundred dollars to a needy young man in our Church for a quick recovery during a battle with cancer. The mission of the AHEPA is to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, Family and Individual Excellence through community service and volunteerism. Today it is vital that we preserve the heritage of our Greek Culture. The Greek Culture is the foundation of our Democratic way of government. GREEK SCHOOL On March 25th, you are all invited to come and honor our ancestors. The students of the Greek Language School will present a patriotic program which will bring loving memories of your children or even of yourself. It is a day of great importance for the Greek nation. On this day, every Greek living in Greece or in any corner of our planet has the obligation to let his thoughts fly away into the past and to reflect on the hardships of our ancestors who lived hard times under the Ottoman oppression. They lived under the Turks for four centuries, but they managed to preserve our faith and language. They never forgot who they were. Let us all gather together and honor them. Let us be together, and in one strong voice, proclaim that Greece never dies. Respectfully, Helen Gevas, Director

Gold Medal
The Saint Spyridon Dance and Choral School is proud to present our gold medal winners. Congratulations to all of the participants and to our instructors, Tony Petroulias, Maria Terris, Patricia Kouris and Kathy Meck. The dancers looked incredible thanks to Mrs. Dougenis and Mrs. Kyriakidis and to all of the parents who assisted in preparing these wonderful outfits. It was a challenging year and all of the dancers and choir members showed incredible commitment and discipline. I am proud of their accomplishment. I would like to thank all the parents, parishioners and parish council members who were extremely supportive of the dance and choral school. I would also like to thank Father Andrew for his continued support and spiritual guidance of all the church ministries. Andreas Capetanakis Saint Spyridon Dance and Choral School

Certainly, this group of beautiful children was elated when the gold medal hung from their necks. But immediately after receiving them, our children took their medals off and promptly informed us directors to do the same. With the knowledge that they had just accomplished something special, they did not have the need to keep announcing that fact. From OUR children, humility and compassion was what has always mattered. We have exceptional children in our community, intelligent, funny and compassionate. I congratulate the parents for making all the sacrifices to make certain that their children shine. ΝΕΑ ΤΗΣ ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΥ
PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS In December, Philoptochos along with the help of many loving and generous community members hosted the second annual Trinity Kids Christmas Party. The Cypress Room transformed into a cozy Christmas fairy tale with twinkle lights, treats, and the sound of children’s laughter. The fireplace was lit, stockings were hung with care from the hearth, Santa’s leather winged back chair awaited his arrival... and hundreds of gifts under the Christmas Tree! Volunteers and chair women Marina Dimas and Marian Dougenis planned an amazing evening with treasure hunts, crafts, prayer, caroling, dancing, delicious food, homemade pastries but best of all... the warm fellowship and Christmas spirit which filled our hearts. It was nice to see the Trinity families again and how much the children had grown. A few had graduated from the program and we welcomed the newest angels to the flock. Our appreciation to the Trinity Heroes for their generous contributions: Scott and Dana Harris - Divanti Enoteca, Takis and Elaine Vartelas - Santorini Greek Island Grille & Pitas and Buns, Anthony Kalikas, Paul and Stasia Runge, Vasil Karounos, Pan Arcadians, Parish Council, Carol Vassiliadis, Sissons Family, Brownie Troop from Scripps Ranch under the direction of Michelle Joseph, Brian Canaris Family, Jeanette Rigopoulos, Tzartzanis Family, Christina Vassiliadis, Georgia Stathoulis, Fred and Angie Georggin, Honey Hyde, Paris DePerro, Stephanie Mastorakos, Harriet Kounaves, Tina Perri, Dino Dougenis Family, Michelle Capetanakis, Ginakes Family, Kristin Gibson Trikas, Joel Ortiz, Mary Manusos, Irene Lane, Phyllis Krooskos, Horeftis Family, Navrides Family, Mark Arapostathis, each and every loving Elf volunteer, and Santa Dino Paraskevopoulos & Family! Philoptochos could not have hosted this party for these deserving angels without your support and love. The Altar Committee adorned the solea with fragrant fresh pine boughs of greenery and wreaths in celebration of our Lord’s birth. January the new arrangements of forever flowers graced the marble pillars. Thank you Jannie Gallanis and Julie Karagianides. Philoptochos was honored to assist in a small way to show gratitude to the Wounded Warriors in residence at Balboa Naval Hospital. These brave and humble men and women put themselves in harm’s way for all American’s, our freedom, and our land. It was a nice evening spent and it was particularly wonderful to share and assist in helping Avant Garde who were very gracious and kind hosts. Sam the cooking guy prepared chicken enchiladas and shrimp tacos, hot off the grill! It was a great way to show appreciation to those who have given so much to their country. Philoptochos along with the Dance and Chorale School co12
hosted a very special birthday party for George Terris. The room and surrounding area was filled to capacity with family, dancers, and friends. It was an outpouring of love and hope, no heart was left untouched. Later we sang happy birthday and enjoyed the
cake and ice cream. George and his family in our prayers. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of our community members and friends that have invested their faith in the Anthousa Chapter by becoming members. It was a landmark year for our chapter with 206 members! February marked the 2012 Membership Drive. We’ve accomplished a great existence through your support allowing the chapter to embrace many worthy causes both here at home and around the world, BUT we cannot do it without your continued support. We challenge each household to join this dynamic chapter and help us to further the embrace of Philoptochos in the New Year! The Membership Tea was hosted on Saturday, February 4th . It was a warm and informative gathering, and as we’ve become famous for... a delicious homemade luncheon fare was presented by the Ladies. Many thanks to Tea chairs Marian Dougenis and Mary Ann Joseph, Giorgie Nicolaou for exhibiting her beautiful artwork, and to Dr. Nick Capetanakis for his talk on women’s health. Philoptochos is NOT for women only; men are welcome and encourage to join. See Marian Dougenis (mkdougenis@prodigy. net). Membership Chair for details on starting the New Year off right by supporting the Anthousa Chapter of Philoptochos. Valentine’s Day found Vicky Mellos and Christina Marantos preparing delicious pastitsio and galactoburiko for our seniors. A wonderful time was enjoyed by all. Lastly, we are delighted to announce that the chapter will again bake the sweet and fragrant Pascha Tsourekia for your purchase ($10.00). Please use the order form enclosed for your convenience, email your order to tsoureki@anthousa.org, or contact board member Melanie Dellas 858-442-7916. Please enjoy the photos of January and February gatherings hosted by Philoptochos. Peace and Love, Alexandra Mouzas Anthousa Chapter President

My Dear Fellow Parishioners of St. Spyridon, Here we are, one year later after I was given the honor and opportunity to take over the publishing of The Shepherd. This publication is constantly evolving, and it is time to kick it up a notch by taking it online. The new website TheShepherdNewsletter.com will not only host the printed version of the newsletter, but will also feature additional content, such as photos, videos, extended articles, and more. So I hope you visit it often and find it useful. It is still under development, but a few features are active right now. However, the development and the publishing of this newsletter cannot continue without adequate support from advertisers. Therefore I kindly ask you to look at the advertising offer presented in the middle spread of this issue and consider taking advantage of it. It’s a win-win situation for all: Your business will benefit from the advertising and the newsletter will contine being published and serving our community.

OCMC
Orthodox Christian Mission Center
HUNGER STRIKE 2012 Walk to Fund & Support our First OCMC Mission Team to Mongolia Sunday, April 1, 2012 Right after the Divine Liturgy, at St. Spyridon GOC at 3655 Park Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92103, all those who have registered will have a Lenten meal, help make sandwiches to hand out to hungry people we encounter along the way (HUNGER- It’s no joke!) and then participate in the walk (about 1:30 pm). The Orthodox parishes in San Diego have the opportunity to help financially support this mission team who is going to Mongolia to spread the word of Jesus Christ. This is your chance to share in that mission from afar; to join hands with them and to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” The 2012 OCMC Mission Team to Mongolia, a country that is over 98% non-Christian, will participate in evangelism and teaching Mongolians about the Faith. The Team will travel to the capital, Ulaanbaatar and serve at the Holy Trinity Parish, the only Orthodox Church in the country. Team members also help attract new members, and organize catechisms in the parish community center. Activities will include religious education, Bible studies, music, and sharing the Gospel through drama, teaching and testimonies. Christianity in Mongolia is a reality for the first time in modern history. Effective discipleship and developing Mongolian church leaders is a strategic need and the key to strengthening the Church. Participants must be sensitive to cross-cultural ministry and willing to help in the contextualization of Biblical truths to fit Mongolian culture. Anyone who registers for the walk will receive a T-shirt and water bottle with the OCMC logo on it (if ordered before March 17, 2012).
