Letter from the Editor Greek Films, Here Comes The Judge, Easter Greetings Dear Readers: Once again Greek Film returns to both northern and southern California as their respective film festivals Frosene kick off. This year, in addition to showcasing fantastic Phillips films from Greece, San Francisco will pay tribute to Editor the late great comedic actor Thanassis Veggos and Los Angeles to the legendary Theo Angelopoulos. For festival details, please see page 4. Last year FDF introduced its Greeks Got Talent competition which was hosted by Margarita, Greece’s Fame Story contestant and SF Bay Area native. Margarita returned and welcomed GGT judge Yiorgos Iianos who also appeared on the show with her in February. Joining Iianos on the judge’s panel and returning to FDF once again was Music Producer and Talent Manager Vangelis Yiannopoulos. The HJ sat down with Yiannopoulos for a glimpse into the life of this awardwinning record producer as well as his impressions of this west coast extravaganza called FDF. Please turn to page 15. Once again, we celebrate our tradition of sharing your special Easter greetings with our readers both in print and online at hellenicjournal.org this month. On behalf of the Hellenic Journal Board of Directors and Staff we wish you and yours a very happy Easter. Christos Anesti!

he Hellenic Heritage Institute (HHI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of various aspects of Greek culture, which constitute the rich Greek heritage,” wrote HHI Founding President Marina Moustakas ten years ago in the organization’s newsletter. “The primary objective and purpose of the HHI is to research, teach, promote, produce and display cultural information that will be made available to the general public. The center of these activities is a permanent building called the Hellenic Heritage Museum.” Moustakas came to the U.S. in 1962 and since that time she has devoted her life to
promoting Greek culture. The Hellenic Heritage Museum is a culmination of that commitment. “You can take the girl out of Greece, but you can’t take Greece out of the girl,” she laughed. Celebrating Greek Independence San Francisco
The commemoration of Greek Independence Day was celebrated on March 24, 2012 at San Francisco’s Civic Auditorium at an event organized by the United Hellenic American Societies (UHAS) under the leadership of President Ted Laliotis and the UHAS Board. Festivities included a patriotic program performed by school children from various Bay Area parish Greek Schools. Religious and patriotic remarks were made by His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos, Consul General of Greece Ambassador Ioannis Andreades, and the Honorary Consul of Cyprus Nicolaos Theophanous. Keynote speaker was The Very Reverend Archimandrite Apostolos Koufalakis. In his speech, Fr. Koufalakis spoke about the significance of the double celebration of Virgin Mary’s Annunciation and the start of the Greek Independence

We are very concerned about the welfare of families who have lost their homes, lost their jobs, and they must turn to food kitchens in order to feed their children and themselves,” said Laliotis.

e came to Greece when he was 30 years old via Brussels, Belgium, where he was born. He admittedly had no real Greek background, except that he knew Greek culture through dancing, singing and through some music by Dalaras, Alexiou and Theodorakis, among others. Ultimately, it was Vangelis Yannopoulos’ expertise in Vangelis Yannopoulos radio that would inspire the country of his ancestors to come calling. Yannopoulos received his Master in Communications from the University of Brussels. He eventually landed positions as a journalist and was co-founder of the first Belgian rock monthly magazine. As a
rock critic he had an opportunity to interview some of the greatest musicians of the time. Record Producer In 1987 Vangelis received a proposal to go to Greece to pioneer its first private radio station. They became the market leader after two months on the air. After a few years he was “very deceived” and wanted to go back to Belgium but he received a proposal from the biggest record company in Greece (Minos now known as EMI) to be one of its record producers. He didn’t know what a record producer was, but that decision to embrace it proved to be a turning point in his career. “The business I was participating in, in Belgium was also very important because the radio stations were also market leaders so I knew very well about music,” said VANGELIS YANNOPOULOS continued on page 18
